@generatedreflection Hope you don’t mind if I respond to your tags this way, since my og post is already kind of long! So running on the assumption that KH is a video game, or at least fiction/a story, in-universe and the characters are waking up and changing when they’re not “supposed” to…

I guess it depends on when the initial divergence from fate/the narrative/the program happened and how much it affected. Was Riku supposed to be our player character? If so, did Sora and Riku only swap physical places/external roles, or did their writing or programming adjust their personalities to fit their new places in the story/game so as to keep the narrative from diverging too much? Is this the first run through the story, or have there been multiple past loops we’re not privy to and that the characters don’t consciously remember but which still affect their hearts?

I’m thinking of ReCoded specifically, when Data Sora and Data Riku go on this whole adventure that’s similar to KH1 but different enough to shape them into their own people. Even after they’re reset to follow what’s written in the Journal, we know those memories remain in their hearts and in the hearts of their newfound Disney friends from the ‘real’ world, Mickey, Donald, and Goofy. So data KH1 will never truly reflect KH1 as we know it.

If ReCoded is spelling the big picture out for us, do Sora and Riku only start awakening during the one run of KH1 that we play… or have they been waking up because of one or more resets before that we haven’t seen? Is fate, destiny, the narrative, the program trying really hard to make this story play out the way it’s “supposed” to, but the boys keep swerving, developing more awareness and free will with every reset? Or is this the first run where things are different because of something the Master of Masters most likely set in motion? Or maybe what he set in motion has taken all these resets to come to fruition?

It’s a lot to think about. And I don’t have any answers. Certainly it’s interesting to consider all the different ways the story could go/is maybe “supposed” to go… If Sora and Riku’s roles are supposed to be flipped, with Riku as the champion of light and Sora as the one who falls to darkness… then it’s kind of ironic that they seem to be circling back to that now. Like rather than completely changing or swapping destinies, they just took a detour. They took the long way around, but the road still leads to the same place. Fate is fighting to correct course.

But I also think, you know, Sora could’ve always been meant to be the Hero and embody that archetype even if the Keyblade was not “supposed” to be his. I don’t think the one who wields Kingdom Key Light is synonymous necessarily with the Hero of the story or even the main protagonist. It’s also possible for Riku to pass on the Keyblade to Sora without falling to darkness.

Either way, the idea of Riku giving his crown/destiny to Sora, rewriting the story and essentially acting as the narrative for Sora in this sense, usurping fate, is interesting. Especially when you compare this to Data Riku’s role in ReCoded. He’s the vessel for the Journals, for the entire digital universe they create, and he protects it. He protects Sora’s story, the one we see in the games, which plays out how it does because Riku gives Sora the Keyblade.

The one thing I feel for sure — a lot of this, the story changing and characters waking up/coming alive, comes back to Riku. From what we see of him as a little kid, Riku’s always been more “awake,” it seems, than his peers. Always questioning things and possessing a wisdom beyond his years. It’s like he almost knows (or remembers) things he shouldn’t. As Sora puts it, Riku says “some weird stuff sometimes.” And I think Riku is the one who starts waking Sora up. He encourages Sora to think about things that it doesn’t seem Sora would think about on his own. To ask questions. To see their world differently. And to consider worlds beyond their own.

I think he’s why Sora’s first line in the series is about awakening. “I’ve been having these weird thoughts lately. Like — Is any of this for real or not?” And I think Riku’s why Sora’s able to connect with and awaken/bring to life so many characters in the story. That might even be canon, actually, if Riku encouraging Sora to open his heart to Ventus when they’re little kids is what teaches Sora how to... By empowering Sora, Riku is the catalyst for a ripple effect of change that defies destiny and universal law. And it culminates in his KH3 sacrifice which allows Sora to rewrite how the Book of Prophecies ends.

I think that’s what Riku has always represented: Awakening. Truth. The outside world — whether that means adulthood, reality, new perspectives, or lands yet untraveled. He makes the darkness conscious by bringing it to light. Especially for Sora. Riku quite literally wakes Sora up after CoM and in DDD, and his light pulls forgotten/repressed memories up from the depths. Riku’s often associated with the sun — the kind of bright, harsh light that hurts to look at. That makes it hard, if not impossible, to fall back asleep.

Riku’s the sudden light in your eyes that has you groaning and rolling away when someone has to get you out of bed in the morning lol He’s the rude awakening. The truth is often not pleasant or easy. It often hurts. But inevitably, it becomes known. Inevitably, the sun rises and illuminates the dark. Dawn breaks, and the day and all its challenges must be faced. No slacking off. Chop, chop. It’s time to wake up, Sora. Destati!

Even Data Riku in ReCoded is the one who lifts the curtain for Data Sora and ‘reveals the matrix’ so to speak. “It’s time for you to learn the truth.” Riku offers the truth, perhaps quite literally sometimes if that’s what his iconic outstretched hand gesture represents — and it definitely seems to given how KH3’s tutorial/awakening parallels Sora’s dream in the KH1 opening. But it’s up to Sora to accept the truth. To face it. To take Riku’s hand and awaken. It’s Sora’s choice.

Anyway. Whether Riku is “supposed” to be the Hero or was always meant to be the Rival, he’s not supposed to love Sora as much as he does, and certainly not in the romantic way the games suggest he does… I understand your hesitation about gay intent in KH… But it really feels like the “missing”/unspoken piece here that makes so many people scratch their heads over Riku’s character arc. For Sora, it’s less clear (especially in English), but I do think Riku is in love with him. And I truly believe so much of “destiny” changing and characters awakening, Sora awakening, comes back to that.

Destiny in this case would be the typical formula of Disney fairy tales and the expectations of our heteronormative society. And awakening would be developing awareness of these limitations and smashing them… Perhaps reflected through Riku and Sora exposing the flaws in the Light and Dark binary that’s dictated Keyblade society and caused many of the problems their generation has to contend with.

Perhaps the door to the light, to truth, to awakening IS the closet door, then (insert joke here about Riku literally being the gay awakening)… But it’s a lot of other things as well. Awakening is discovering any truth. Every truth. It’s knowledge of the systems that limit and control you, of any unseen force that holds you back. It’s power to see through illusions and lies, distortions and distractions. It’s free will and independent thought. It’s self-actualization and true freedom. After all, you cannot break free of chains you don’t know are there.

That certainly makes the Master of Masters an interesting fellow… It seems like he wants change. He wants the characters to deviate from the script, to awaken, to develop free will… But at the same time, he’s pulling all the strings. He’s the eye always watching them... Does he truly want freedom, or does he want to be the one who decides what freedom looks like?

ARE YOU KIDDING ME? and are there any other characters who haven't gotten a single event yet? like, i'm a solomon lover but damn him, barbatos etc. (or just them?) have gotten two events and then there's (supposedly, i think, idk i'm asking) diavolo and...presumably others (who i'm not aware of because i honestly do not keep up with events apart from looking for enough spoilers to see if it's worth it for me to go search up more about it, but never play it myself obviously lol) as well? like...am i missing out on something? i think i might be? isn't that unfair or is there something i was supposed to know? because i haven't seen a single SOUL ask about him so far (or am i not looking hard enough?)???

Okay, anon. This question sent me down the rabbit hole because I was like I need to look this up.

So with the help of the Obey Me! Wiki, I have determined a few things about the Spotlight events.

I had noticed that sometimes events were focused on a character, but didn't list them as being in the spotlight. For instance, the Scroll of Thirst event was very much about Solomon, but no spotlight was listed. I felt like the Chess event was also very focused on Belphie, but again no spotlight. Or the Blue Para event being mostly about Levi.

This happens when it's a Celestial Blessing event and there are outfits for multiple characters. Those events seem to be focused on those characters, as if they were having a spotlight event. But there is no mention of the spotlight and I suppose it's because they don't want players to think that there's only one outfit for that character? Either way, that seems to be the distinction.

That being said, there are plenty of events that do list specific spotlights. So with that in mind, I went through them to see who we have had spotlighted.

The results are rather uneven. The events were either a solo spotlight or a shared spotlight with two characters. Here's the breakdown:

Lucifer - 1 solo, 1 shared Mammon - 2 solo, 2 shared Levi - 1 shared Satan - 2 solo, 1 shared Asmo - 2 solo, 2 shared Beel - 1 solo Belphie - 1 solo

Not sure how much people care about Luke, but for the record he also hasn't had a spotlight.

I was SHOCKED to see that Lucifer only had one solo event. And inexplicably Barb has had THREE??? LOL two of them were about sports and the other one was about video games. Make it make sense.

Anyway, as you can see Diavolo has also not had one. I think you could argue that Levi hasn't either, since he's only had one that he shared with Satan.

So you aren't missing anything, it is an unfair distribution. I know it took us forever to get Beel & Belphie events. I don't know why they're doing it this way, but it's pretty dumb. I can only assume we'll eventually get a Diavolo spotlight event because aside from Luke, he's the only one who hasn't had one.

Hi, I saw your post about blonde hair and whiteness being associated with good and dark hair and poc features being associated with evil and I don’t know if it’s the same or derailing so I won’t reblog it with this addition but it kind of reminds me of a similar thing, where whiteness and lighter features are associated with femininity and darker ones and poc features with masculinity. And I know femininity isn’t inherently “good” nor masculinity “evil” but it’s something I’ve noticed that gets me upset. How female characters whether human or otherwise will often be lighter than their male counterparts, how most heterosexual interracial relationships will have the girl be lighter skinned or white, and the boy be darker skinned or a poc, and how most lesbian/sapphic couples will have the more feminine partner be lighter-skinned/white while the more masculine partner will be darker-skinned/poc, for example Lumity and Catradora and some other examples(and this is no shade to either of those ships because I like them both a lot but it is a trend that exists a lot). There are some exceptions such as Revolutionary Girl Utena and The Prom but they are rarer in comparison.

Stuff like this leads to woc and especially Black women, but ESPECIALLY those with darker skin being seen as less feminine than white women or nbwoc. In lots of Black media the Black women are all lighter skinned with looser curls and lighter eyes and are often played by biracial actresses(usually half-white), while the Black men are darker-skinned and played by fully-Black actors. Likewise, straight interracial relationships featuring a Black partner almost always have the male partner be Black. And if it’s a Black woman in a wlw ship the non-white partner will be more feminine than she is. A lot of Black femmes and other woc femmes with dark skin often don’t feel femme enough because the standards for femininity often bleed into the lesbian community where everyone’s prototypical idea of a femme lesbian is white and slim. I even saw some stories of young Black girls not being allowed to be the princess in a school play because “Black girls can’t be princesses” similar to how someone said that a Black girl couldn’t play an angel in a play but the white girls could. It’s as if the standard for femininity is whiteness which leads a lot of Black girls and women to feel like feminine enough because they are too dark and idk it is something to think about. I hope this isn’t missing the point of your og post or anything but I feel like it is worth mentioning. I’m sure they’re are lots of videos on it too. It’s so unfair.

No you're totally right! I think something that cis people like to do is ascribe morality to femininity and masculinity. and it's not always F = Good and M = Bad because obviously femininity in men and masculinity in women are punished extremely violently, but they do play into (feminine) innocence a lot while also playing into the colorist/racist idea that lightness equals morality. hence why often times when someone is described as angelic or the epitome of innocence, the character will be a blonde haire blue eyed girl, specifically. and other times when, even if she doesn't have that pheontype, she's still a girl.

you also see it in the conded (and sometimes not) "women and children = innocent" framing that people will use to draw sympathy for a terrible phenomena.

And like I said, there's lots of times where masculinity is the standard for morality and femininity isn't (like the masculine aloofness versus the feminine emotionality). but in America especially (where I am currently) how we view masculinity, femininity, gender neutrality, and everyhting in between is inextricably linked to race and white supremacy. what makes a manly man and a womanly woman and a deviant of these binary ideals has a lot to do with white christian views on sex, gender, and sexuality.

Worst Aeon take that I've seen was someone insisting that the jet ski part of trailer proves that she must've brought it along to island in an elaborate plan specifically to save Leon. As if she's a fortune teller who must've known he'd be there, knew exactly how the entire mission would turn out, knew that he'd turn down the helicopter ride and that he'd need to quickly save Ashley from the explosion before she arrived. Did this person even play the god damn game or know anything about Ada at all?

I'm so scared that when they realise SW has seized the opportunity to actually make her a character and give her an entire story that isn't about running around in the shadows saving him, there'll be so much uproar that Capcom won't continue on the current path. It's irrational, but god DAMN these people are so fuckin loud that I'm terrified they'll ruin the experience for fans who actually like her and enjoy the new timeline.

that's literally what happened in OG's Separate Ways.

OG's SW reveals that Ada planned everything in RE4 -- even down to the point of somehow making sure that Leon would be the agent assigned to this mission in the first place. because OG's SW was fucking garbage. and that's also why Aeon stans are so obsessed with the idea that Ada left a little love note for Leon in the bear keychain, since it has that zipper in the back -- because it's not implausible, because she knew all along that she was going to toss him that key eventually.

the average dev cycle for an RE game these days seems to be about 6 years. whatever follow-up game to RE4make they're making, it's already well in development. DG said to expect the next title in the Remake series no sooner than 2025, but more likely 2026. the backlash to SW would have to be RE6 levels of outrage for Capcom to scrap 3-4 years of development.

and Capcom seems to be acutely aware of the fact that SW is going to cause a shitstorm. I was thinking about this yesterday, actually. it is so beyond bizarre that they sat on the confirmation of SW's existence for literal years, when everyone knew it was going to be a thing that inevitably happened with a remake of Resident Evil 4 -- and not only did they sit on the announcement and refuse to confirm anything, they only gave a seven day window in between announcement and launch.

from a marketing perspective, doing that is making a deliberate choice to hamstring launch-day sales for the sake of withholding information. the sweet spot for this is usually 3-6 months between announcement and launch, because it's enough time for people to talk about it and spread the word but not so much time that people get fatigued/distracted and forget about it. but to keep the game in the conversation, more trailers and gameplay videos and interviews need to be released consistently in that 3-6 month window.

doing it this way means that Capcom consciously chose to deny themselves that crucial window for word of mouth to spread, because they'd rather have a highly curated pre-launch marketing campaign where they only have to show under sixty seconds of story content and never have to talk about it in interviews -- because they don't want people to have enough time and/or information to become suspicious or start speculating about just how drastically the story is going to change, because they know that diehards and purists are going to be fucking angry.

they basically made a calculated decision and came to the conclusion that it was financially in their best interest to try to prevent people who would otherwise normally buy the DLC from deciding they didn't want it, as opposed to trying to spread the word and rope in as many new sales as possible. their goal was to prevent loss, not promote growth.

waitttt ok so the og avatar (the blue cat people one not the elements one.) it’s a fine movie. right? it’s got some serious problems, but it’s a movie i really enjoy and have for a long time. i’m not saying i excuse or don’t care about the problems the movie has, i actually think that those problems are what hold the movie back. and bc i’m tired from a stressful thanksgiving vacations with my family and my creative brain if’s finally switching back on, i’m now gonna explain how i, personally, would have done the avatar movie. (and in doing so, made it better) this plan may or may not involve a time machine

beginning with the problems it has,

they chickened out every chance they got and made their fantastical alien world less alien and in doing so made it feel like a bizarre allegory for native americans

the white guy protag saves the day and it’s just kind of. weird.

of course these problems are more complex and nuanced than that but that’s the general idea.

following that, here is how i would fix it

first, actually go for it with the whole alien world thing that was planned. so many people were hired to construct this complex world with its own plant and animal life, solar system, people, and culture. let the alien people look like goddamn aliens.

if i remember correctly, the na’vi were intended to be a mishmash of cultures from all around the world, but especially in their music. and what did they do with their music? not nearly enough, if you’ve seen Sideways’ video on it. generally speaking, so much of the worldbuilding ideas were wasted for the sake of the movie feeling familiar, western, and comfortable. and i say to hell with that. i think the movie would have been so much better should all these ideas be more heavily embraced, and hell, there could still be a romance! i honestly think a human/alien romance could actually be really interesting if the aliens actually looked properly alien.

second, the main character should be less important.

while it may have muddied the story a bit, i think a shift in perspective to the actual na’vi people, or at least a shift of focus onto them through sully’s eyes, would have felt better. they should get to protect and rescue THEIR OWN home, don’t you think? rather than this random dude? he can still be the protagonist, sure, but let the weird chosen one prophecy thing be about his alien girlfriend instead. it’d make sense for her, the heir or whatever, to be given that responsibility.

the main character could certainly play an important part in supplying insider information on humanity’s plans, risking himself by doing so, but he shouldn’t be the one leading the charge against them. let neytiri do it.

third, just don’t make that second movie. i mean i certainly enjoyed watching it late at night with my mom, but it wasn’t good and definitely didn’t need to have been made.

asking u bc u seem to know a lot about accessibility!! im not photosensitive, and i dont really know how to tell when an image should be tagged as eyestrain (aside from super bright colors like #ffff00, etc). i wanna tag things properly but idk when a color starts being too bright. is there a good rule of thumb for this? and/or somewhere i can like. Check if an image is too eyestrainy, like how there r colorblindness simulating sites to make sure theres enough contrast?

glad to know people think the empty hole in my head has knowledge in it /j, but yeah, i can help!

1) you can ask people who are photosensitive directly- with consent, obviously. some people are willing to look through images, gifs or videos to tell you if they're too bright or have eye-strain, but sometimes it can put their health at risk, so not everyone will be able to help

2) for eye-strain, you can check the value of the colors on your image and see if they're too close to each other. there's probably more ways to do it, but I personally go on a drawing program, add a separate layer that's solely gray (shade doesn't matter too much but I try to go for a middle shade) and set that layer to "color". boom!

if colors are close together in shade, even if they're dull, they may cause eye-strain

3) as for brightness. If the colors are very neon and bright, like pretty vibrant, I'd tag it as eye strain or bright colors. Like, a good example is the og polyamorous flag (black, red and blue one). no hate against it, but it's bright as hell because the colors are very saturated and vibrant

pastel tones normally don't count unless they're super super close in shade and in a single image- it's rare but I've seen this happen, one example is one of the most used unlabeled flags which is basically a white blur and can be considered eye-strain despite not having neon shades

4) if it's got a mix of vibrant black or white and rainbow colors. Tag it. example would be the original, unedited disabled flag with the rainbow lightning. personal experience here, it has caused me headaches

I haven't fully watched the new Higurashi yet (you can include spoilers for OG higurashi and the sequel in your answer, it's fine!) but from what I've heard and seen myself, Satoko was extremely out of line towards Rika and nothing Rika could've done could justify how Satoko basically abused and tortured her. The fact that they reconcile at the end puts me off because how can you forgive someone who forced you to relive your worst traumas?

*MAJOR SPOILERS FOR 2020-2021'S "HIGURASHI GOU" AND "HIGURASHI SOTSU" ANIMES HEREIN*

I wasn't sure how to speak to this Ask because the Ask itself is a massive spoiler (and obviously it's possible some people here might not be wanting that), but it's also Anonymous. So I have to answer it publicly if I'm even gonna respond. I guess I'll just roll with the huge spoiler warning there, put a bunch of spoiler tags in, and hopefully that'll do enough.

God how I hate Gou and Sotsu, though. *sigh* It's not the sequel story I hate the most out of any sequel ever, but it's definitely one of those sequels that... any time I go back to the original, it's tainted by the knowledge of what canonically came later. It'll never not be damaged by these things. Taking a story that had a beautiful and satisfying ending for decades, then going back to add a new sequel that not only undoes the triumph of that ending complete but ALSO radically reinterprets one of the beloved characters into a villain now is just... SUCH a "fuck you" to everybody who ever loved the original.

There’s nothing like hugging it out after 100 years of physical and psychological torment.

But that long-ass video I recently linked to also taught me a lot of things about how it turned out the way it did — and where you can go to get a better version of the same basic tale. Though even then, I still have a lot of misgivings.

For starters, I learned that franchise author Ryukishi07 wrote down the basics of what was supposed to happen in every arc and the overall narrative for the anime team at Passione, and then he let them handle the details. The actual scripts were handled by the writers at Passione, and Ryukishi07 said he was frequently shocked and surprised by what they did in the storyboards and scripts. He wouldn't have written things that way himself. But because he A) believed they were the experts when it came to animation, not him, and B) has always embraced other creators coming in and giving their own narrative spin to the 'When They Cry' multiverse, he always signed off on/approved anything they showed him, no matter how much it deviated from his own vision. Which, I'd argue? Was a big mistake. Because when you're giving us the first official full sequel to such a beloved story solely in anime format - there's never going to be any other "Ryukishi's version"? That means you need to make sure the characters are being done right and the events make sense. You need to make certain it's all true to that original tale. No, maybe this isn't the medium you're comfortable writing in. But that doesn't mean you can afford to look the other way when you think "Wow, that's completely NOT what I intended" over and over.

Secondly, I learned much more about the manga adaption of "Gou" and its own unique take on the sequel — which is called Higurashi Meguri. By the time Sotsu was finished airing, the "Gou" manga was just wrapping up, and the mangaka embraced the opportunity to do take the same framework and tell a version of the story that is significantly different. The result is that the manga is much more in line with the characters and tone of the original story than the anime was, because the author has seen how much the anime didn't work and is able to course-correct in a million small ways. The same basic events are there, sure. But it's all about a hundred times better-handled so far. 

HOWEVER... there are some flaws that are going to remain inescapable. When you end one season/series on a cliffhanger that you proceed to ignore for like 13 episodes before you get around to dealing with it in the second season/series? That’s stupid, and it’s an example of something kind of inescapable in the structure of the damn thing. More importantly, as far as I'm concerned? The entire concept of this sequel was doomed from the fucking jump. Getting a version with better writing and better motivations and more believable actions on the part of the characters is GOOD, sure, but that doesn't mean it's not STILL a huge "fuck you" to have these basic events take place at all. Y'know? Like, I respect Meguri, sure. But I still don't particularly WANT it.

...this is all a really overlong lead-in to my point, which is that: In Gou and Sotsu, they sometimes try to imply that Satako isn’t really in control of her own actions, Or at least, the Satako we’ve always known isn’t in control? There’s seemingly a new, second personality in there - a “witch” who may or may not have been brought into existence by her interactions with Eua inside the sea of fragments. (And again: The whole “a god-being inside the physical domain of the the sea of fragments is communicating with Satako to cause her to become corrupted” is something I find inherently bad and dumb that you can’t really ignore in this story.) So this arguably removes some degree of guilt from Satako? (This is heavily muddied by how the storytelling handles the whole “Dual Personality” aspect in a bad way, but that’s another can o’ worms.) 

On the flip side, the alternate telling of these events in the Higurashi Meguri manga takes this idea much farther, making it far more blatant that Eua damages Satako’s mind against her will and forcibly manipulates Satako into her new corrupted form. Satako is far more of a victim in Meguri than she ever is in the anime; it’s obvious that she’s not in control of anything anymore. She’s just a puppet that Eua is using to ensure that Rika continues to be “interesting.”

So I guess my point is, yeah, I get what you mean about the anime in particular. I guess this is supposed to be an exploration of how their relationship became too co-dependent, but it really just makes Satako look like a psychotic asshole. But in the manga? Well, Meguri isn’t finished, but at this point, I can far better understand why someone would forgive Satako in THIS scenario. It really isn’t her fault that this happened to her OR Rika.

do u have any hopes/ideas for what re9 might be or what u want it to be? personally i think they’ll stick with the bsaa plotline and pick up right after re8 but i really really want it to be a jill (or claire or both) led game. love chris but we’ve seen enough of him as a main recently. and idk if i’d actually want them to do it because it’s hard to believe capcom would do it well but it would be cool to use it as an opportunity to bring back some older side characters (sheva, carlos) and show us what leon’s been up to since 6/vendetta and kind of making it a the only people we can trust are people who have been through this shit with us kind of thing. idk. very rudimentary ideas. also i’m a little tired of the mold so i hope they go back to regular zombies/run with the reanimated corpses as soldiers thing they showed at the end of 8.

Anyway tbh I really hope they do pick up with the "BSAA is corrupt" plotline because that massive loose thread was basically taken out back and executed when it came to the Shadows of Rose DLC (probably because the people who made it had no idea what story they were meant to be continuing). I love Chris too and while I agree that we've had enough of this man already, imo he would be the best character to follow if this is the plot we're going with. Cuz for the BSAA who are actual notable (aka Marketable) characters we could follow?

Rebecca? Sure, but she's a doctor, and very much not an agent. Remember, this has to be a video game. Could potentially utilize her unfamiliarity with being an agent as an avenue for horror with her being thrust into survival, but idk

Jill? Yeah, I would love to see Jill again. But like, personally, Capcom has to tread VERY lightly about where Jill has been this whole time. Because (timeline-wise) it's been 12 years since her rescue, and we haven't heard shit despite massively important things going on in her world. I would love another Chris/Jill team up though for 9, kind of a return to familiarity

Sheva? Probably not, she's part of the African branch, isn't exactly in the picture. I love her, but Capcom doesn't seem to

Barry? He's not as recognizable imo, at least compared to the other og re characters like the main 4. I'd love to see him again, but idk, a LOT of people really really want Natalia to be a villain for some reason, and I feel like Barry being there might be a catalyst for that, and I really really don't want Natalia to be a villain

Hound Wolf Squad? Listen. Y'all know me, I LOVE these guys, HWS are my blorbos from 8 and I put way too much thought into them. If we were to pick up with the "BSAA is corrupt" plotline I do honestly think it should focus on Chris and his team. That being said, I don't think Capcom is going to do that given how much they were snubbed of any development or cohesive narrative in 8 and Shadows of Rose. I want it, it makes sense, but Capcom is stupid and I don't think they'll go in that direction

Bonus: Claire? I want so badly to see a Redfield team up again. It pains me that CV is all we have. And I think the leader of a humanitarian group would be a great foe for the corrupt military organization. I would love if they worked together, I miss it dearly

All that being said, I don't know if this is the plotline we'll follow. 8 was done as a cash grab imo, I can elaborate why I feel that way if y'all want, but basically, they don't (and honestly never really have) cared about themes and storytelling and being creative in a way that makes sense in the world that they built. They care about making money by scaring the player. That's it

Touhou: Imperishable Night is my favorite game, while my most favorite character is a tie between Marisa Kirisame, Reimu Hakurei and Alice Margatroid. Fun Fact that famous Bad Apple video is what got me into Touhou in the first place.

Pretty Cure: I got into the entire franchise just last year and I'm currently watching the entire seasons from start to finish (By the time I'm typing this I'm in DokiDoki Precure). The OG and Max Heart have my heart while Cure Black and Cure Blossom are my favorites. I also love the All Star movies cause I'm a big sucker for crossovers.

Sailor Moon: I watched Crystal and the Eternal Movie on Netflix, and I'm currently reading the Manga! I would get into the 90s anime since I seen so many clips on Youtube (its so funny) but considering how many Precure episodes I have to watch, I can't. (Maybe someday!) I love Hotaru Tomoe. Can't say the same thing for Mamoru Chiba (especially during the first arc of the manga/crystal UGH-)

Revolutionary Girl Utena: The intro slaps and I'm also currently in the middle of watching the series. I know all about the dark themes and enjoy the symbolism even if I dont get it at first. (I could ramble about how the show is amazing tbh)

Sitting To Know Your Collection February Roundup

Week 6 (February 5th - February 12th)

Album: BLOOM by Troye Sivan Play Count: 4 Top 2 Tracks: Bloom (Track 4) Plum (Track 5)

Another library save for week 6 and it was a VIBE! I’m not new to this album, I’ve known and been into several tracks since it came out, but getting back into it and finding new stuff to enjoy was well worth it. He knows how to make people dance and fall in love with what he’s doing, but maybe even him. It’s enticing for sure. On that note, Seventeen (the opening track) makes me want to protect him from all the harm in this world.

PS: My CD player was iffy about when it would let me play this one, so I had to use Spotify for a few of the listens. That being said Spotify has the album tracks out of order, so to play it in order, you might want to queue them up instead of just pressing play.

Week 7 (February 13 - February 18th)

Album: Fortress (2000) by Sister Hazel Play Count: 4 Top 2 Tracks That Aren’t “Your Winter” Cause That Always Been A Favorite: Thank You (Track 3) Shame On Me (Track 7) Your Winter is one of my favorite songs of all time, shout out 10 Thing I Hate About You, so I was excited to dive into the actual album that song comes from. Now I knew they were country but Fortress drove that point home, especially the country of the late 90’s and early 2000s. It’s definitely giving high-waisted mom jeans, but also conversations on back porches with a guitar. I love the sound, it made me happy to listen to it and continues to prove how much I do like country music. Yoncé is Yoncé but this is where home is at.

Week 8 (February 19th - February 25th)

Album: From The Bottom To The Top (2000) by Sammie Always Play Count: 4 Top 2 Tracks: Crazy Things I Do (Track 4) I Like It (Track 2) When we talk about what is actually a throwback, this is the one for me, every single time. I remember being in elementary school and being so in love with Sammie because of this album. When I put it on I get that hint of nostalgia and all the words come back to me instantly. I have so much love for this album, however in my 30’s after so many listens, I just wanted to put on some GROWN FOLK music lol. There was also lines throughout different songs that I thought were repeats of one another and with it being almost a full hour long record, I might have just been getting lost. Again this album makes me so happy and any time I put it on it just works for my mood, but I don’t know that I could do this much binging of it again, at least not for a long while. But hey Sammie is still making music for me to crush on, so maybe that’s where I need to spend my time.

Side Note: I absolutely believe that tweens need more tween crush music and just more tween ish in general, cause there’s not enough of it and that solid in between stage is fading quickly. As long as they realize you can, not spend “every dollar to your name” on somebody at 10. Lol!

Week 9 (February 26th - March 3rd)

Album: Alright Still… (2006) by Lily Allen Play Count: 5 Top 2 Tracks: Littlest Things (Track 8) Not Big (Track 5) Alright Still… is like watching OG British Skins or even a little bit of the the BBC show Misfits. I think a lot of that came 1) from having seen both shows and 2) the music videos themselves. I didn’t even have to revisit the videos because when the song would play, the images would already be reeling in my head. I’m not gonna forget creepy puppets or smashing his vinyl records or even giving him laxatives lol. The full album listen was fun and only a little over a half an hour so it wasn’t a struggle getting to 5 listens, which I haven’t done in several weeks. It’s poppy with a little bit of that crude edge, so if you missed out or just want more from that era, go take a listen and tell me what a good time you had.

PS: The Littlest Things plays during one of my all time favorite romantic comedies and if you haven’t seen Celeste and Jesse Forever, I can’t recommend it enough. The first time I watched it, as soon as it ended, I immediately started it over. I loved it that much.

Nightbringer: Initial Thoughts

I have a lot of thoughts about Nightbringer, but I don't want to have one massive crazy post, so I'm gonna break it up a bit.

This first post is about the general gameplay, nothing story related. So there aren't any spoilers, just my thoughts on the app and updates.

Ruri☆Tunes

I LOVE IT. Listen, Ruri is adorable. I am right there with Levi. Like if this was a real anime, I would absolutely watch it. She's so cute! Did you guys see the background for Lesson 7 where there's a Ruri themed Miss Em doll? The cuteness nearly killed me.

The rhythm game itself is HARD. At first I didn't realize that you need to tap the actual objects. So by switching the controls to up and down, then turning my phone, and tapping the actual objects as they hit the line, I got WAY BETTER. I reblogged a post about this I think yesterday? It explains it better and thanks to that, the levels are now pretty fun.

I love the songs, of course, though some of the remixes are a little funky. But I loooove all the graphics! The lil donuts! And the lil demon chibis! And Luke's chihuahua! Oh yes and my favorite thing ever is Asmo's little "hai!" when he jumps over one of those green puddles. It's so cute.

Overall, I much prefer this to the dance battles. That being said, the levels are not really any easier than the OG. I was hoping we wouldn’t need to have a bunch of crazy high leveled cards to get through the story, buuuut it’s really looking like that might still be the way of it. I mean to be fair, the whole point of this is to make money so...

I don’t really hold it against them. I mean I do but I also don’t lol. The story is good enough that I can look past the money making motives. However I will say that this is just the case for me personally. I am lucky enough to have a little bit of disposable income to spend on apps, but I know a lot of players don’t.

Moving on before this becomes a rant about the evils of capitalism…

Wanderers Whereabouts

It sure is… something… Aside from the horrors of 3D models, I don't understand why they're playing sports in MC's room. Would it have been that much of an issue to give us an outdoor space as well as an indoor one? At least let them play sports in a field or something, you know?

My favorite ones so far have been when there's multiple demons in there, though. The way they interact with each other is so cute. And even though I find the whole thing a tiny bit weird, I DO like hearing their voices and seeing their interactions. Plus they do some really cute things when you give them an MC plushie.

But I think we all agree that the best part is watching Levi chase Mammon around on the map.

This is supposed to be like TikTok, right? Once again I'm not a fan of the 3D models, which is probably due to the whole uncanny valley thing. However, I do still enjoy the shenanigans because what the fuck are those guys even doing? I'm sure you've all seen the musical chairs situation. I did like the one with Luke doing the snack test thing and you can hear Simeon who is recording the video. It's definitely cute to see them doing fun little things like that.

Everything else...

... seems to be the same except for some updated graphics and such. The story interface still has the 2D sprites thankfully and as far as I can tell, it works exactly the same as the OG. I've seen some people saying they're worried about the options changing the story, but they don't anymore than they did before. I think that's just their way of saying you get intimacy points with different characters depending on the options you choose. As far as I can tell, nothing seems to be any different on that end?

I love that they have entirely new special guest and home screen dialogue. The special guest dialogue especially seems more lovey and flirty than the OG. Solomon straight up says he loves you if you get the full heart reaction. You can still get annoyed reactions, though. From what I can tell, the reactions are the same as the OG app. If you get an S, it's the same as if you got three stars in the dance battle. I'm not sure about if you get lower than a B... but the three star reactions seemed to work for S, A, and B.

Also, I looooooove Karasu. I hope we get more Karasu beyond the tutorial, but I don't know if that's actually going to happen. I'm sure many of us will now refer to Mammon as Noodle Boy, though, because c'mon, that's excellent.

Okay there’s more I could talk about, but this post is already long lol. I like the mix of familiar stuff and new stuff. So far, I’m enjoying all of this. Stay tuned for posts about the story itself because there are so many thoughts.

- Very pedantic and get sidetracked way too often in any paragraph longer than 20 lines.

- Friendly and savvy to the point where your rants feel both like side-story conversations and unorganized amateur reviews from someone who keeps enough distance from fiction to enjoy but not entirely imitate.

- Should be hailed as a Western “protector of the weak” for WSJ. Seriously, I’ve never seen someone who would go to such lengths to analyze Jump’s history and its forgotten and unpopular IPs, while also acknowledging their flaws in reviews and pointing out problematic ones. It takes dedication to not be drowned out by the cynicism of the WSJ landscape and toxicity from some childish fanbases to keep on analyzing I bet.

I do try to give off a friendly vibe both online and in real life, I feel like life is better when the people around me are happy with me rather than upset, so I'm glad to know I'm succeeding at that!

My reviews take a lot of inspiration from video essayists like TotallyNotMark or MrMorj while still trying to keep my own voice, so based on that comment, I'm going to say that it probably shows. I've always wanted to try my hand at making videos like those, I'm just trying to build up the confidence to now

I think there's already a youtube channel called Shonen Flop dedicated to talking about canceld Jump properties, but I would love to be able to take a look back at a number of them in that style myself. It's not the main thing I want to focus on if I become a video essayist, but it's definitely something I'd like to touch on

I first started playing video games when I would visit my aunt who had an old NES with the basics like Super Marios 1 and 3, the OG Mario Bros, Duck Hunt, Zelda 1, and the notoriously difficult Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Of course they were all hard for me, I was a little baby boy with no dexterity or capacity to understand game mechanics, but I didn't care, I was just having fun. That was definitely what led to me liking Nintendo more than all of the other options, since it guaranteed I'd always be excited by the prospect of a new Mario or Zelda

I think it was the GameBoy Color and GBA that really got me, though, since those were the first consoles I actually owned for myself. I have tons of formative memories playing those, but to actually answer your specific question, I have exactly one core memory where I noticed my preferences actually forming

My mom was taking my brother and me on a road trip and let us rent a few games each from Blockbuster; I chose Wario Lands 3 and 4, and while playing them, I noticed that while 4 let you have your full skillset from the beginning, 3 needed you to unlock it as you went. I found the concept somewhat confusing at first, but once I realized what was going on, it made sense that it was a way to motivate the player to keep going and to revisit areas. It taught me going forward that just because you can't do something in a game now, it doesn't mean you won't be able to later

I thought the concept was interesting and saw the appeal, but I didn't really like it in the moment. I made the decision right there "I prefer games where you have all of your abilities from the beginning." That feeling still persists, but it's much more complicated now that I've played so many more games and games themselves are so much more complex

Not every game can communicate its mechanics quickly and concisely, so drip-feeding them is a great way to get someone acquainted to a complex system, but at the same time that feeling of limitation in the beginning can prove detrimental to the experience if not balanced correctly

Aside from that, my taste in games never used to be based on brand or anything, it was just whatever was the most fun, which led to me playing a lot of weird esoteric games. I've been thinking about them all day, so here's a quick, non-exhaustive list of my favorite childhood games

This post is mainly directed at people who are rolling up their sleeves to throw down with Colleen's fans (specifically on Twitter)

Colleen's main audience is aimed at young kids from about 9 to 14. When you're that young it's really easy to get caught in a parasocial relationship with a content creator. Especially if the content creator has intention to exploit their fans or use them for their personal gain/profit.

This is why family channel's main audience is children. A lot of children look to family channels to live vicariously through because they don't have a great home life. The content creator will share personal details of their life so that the audience feels like they know them, but leave enough out to not show the cracks in their character.

In Colleen's case she not only shared VERY personal details of her life, but also gave certain fans that she handpicked (for the group chats) special privileges. This can make a child feel like they owe their idol something in return. In this case, that something in return would probably include taking her side in arguments, shit talking her (now ex) husband, looking into gossip websites, defending her in various online spaces, etc.

As someone who was an OG iPad kid "back in the day" I've seen YouTubers go to ACTUAL prison in REAL TIME. So surreal. It can be an emotional time when you realize the person you thought you knew so much about, you actually didn't know at all.

Anyway, if you think the person you're mad at is a kid, don't burn them at the stake. They're going through a lot of shit. (Of course this does not exclude people who are doxing/harassing people, but we need to talk about how these people are/were raised that they think permanently taking away someone's sense of security is ok).

Anyway, I just thinking about this because I'm pretty sure I just threw down with a 10 year old on Twitter and literally just bodied them with so much information that at the end of the argument that it was past their bedtime and to go to bed and they just responded with "ok, you're right. Good Night!" I have never been so confused on twitter before, but I try to welcome new experiences. :/ ? :) ?
