WATERCOLOUR EYES
modern!bookshop!au

summary : you work at a bookstore. anakin doesn't actually read.
warnings : idiots in love, tooth rotting fluff, probably grammar mistakes, (mentioned) padme amidala, cheesy romantic stuff
wc : 3162

the first time anakin sees you, you’re stocking up books in the educational studies section.
it’s been a relatively slow day. not many people enter this bookshop anyway, but when they do, the day seems to go just that bit faster, which is why when anakin sees you for the second time ever, you’re mindlessly flicking through a book in the window of the shop behind the counter, and that is when anakin knows.
but when you see— notice anakin for the first time, you see an older man with him. stubble, grey hair at his temples and a tired expression on his face. anakin’s leaning against a bookcase that coincidentally faces your direction as the other man peers at all of the books in the historical section, fingers tracing over the spines delicately, and every time you do what’s a weak attempt at stealing a small glance at the boy, you catches him looking back at you. every time.
the first time you ever spoke to each other was on a rainy wednesday. the sun peering through the window offered nothing but fogging condensation instead of the sun that baked your skin almost every day. the hours were long, but you got to read, and if you could do that, you were fine.
the door swings open, gold letters glistening in the warm light of the lamp posts outside as the sky begins to grow darker.
you look up, exchange a smile with the same man from before, who you learnt last week that his name’s obi-wan. the boy trails in behind him and you almost freeze.
almost.
his hair is damp due to the misty rain outside, his hands coming up to adjust his brown coat slightly with slight annoyance. you’ve seen him countless times, but the funny feeling in your chest never eased, and you still didn’t even know his name.
the two of them are in the bookshop for around fifteen minutes before obi-wan is at the counter with two books held in his hand: the conspiracies of geonosis and the swamps of dagobah. you put down her own copy of a random fiction book she found on the weekend and scans the two of them, trying her best to ignore the realisation dawning in your brain that the boy isn’t with him when he was mere minutes ago. you two exchange a quiet, light conversation. it’s easy. For obi-wan, at least. it seems so easy for obi-wan to talk and you envy it. his voice was clear and british, almost bostonian. by the end of his well-spoken voice, you’d almost forgotten about the boy and you’ve gone back to a book of your own after obi-wan’s left.
truth is, anakin’s been hiding in the thriller section trying to build up the guts to go and talk to you for ten, long and agonising minutes. maybe that’s why he didn’t leave with obi-wan.
without thinking, he grabs a book from a bookcase, not caring to glance at the title as he works up enough courage to finally talk to you, and he accidentally slams the book onto the counter.
a muscle in your arm twitches. you look up, as if you were a deer caught in headlights. his eyes are spilling like watercolours.
and anakin’s heart almost gives out.
he didn’t know what it was about you. just how you always seem so entranced in a book when you pick it up and flip the pages, or the way your hair sometimes glistens a sandy colour in the sun.
“sorry,” he murmurs, flashing you what he hopes to look like a polite smile.
“it’s okay,” you mutter back, and you smile. dimples.
anakin doesn’t know how much longer he can stay composed without looking like an idiot.
“did you find everything alright, sir?” you ask quietly, taking the book from anakin’s slightly shaking hands. anakin doesn’t know what he’ll reply with, so he takes the safe way out and nods instead. you scan the book, turn it around to read the title with a face twisted in interest.
“tales of the force and where to find them?” you raise an eyebrow. not of confusion, but anakin thinks so, and he feels the blood rush to the skin of his face and he wishes he didn’t wake up this morning. he nods again with a smidge more confidence than before, tilting his head and acting like he didn’t just learn the title of the book with you.
“i’m anakin,” he says, but it’s awkward and thrown off balance, as if he was thrown out of a rhythm. ultimately, you recognise that feeling, so you don’t comment on it and your small smile only thickens. you probably wouldn’t have said anything anyway.
you shrug, trying not to glance at his eyes as you tell him your name. the rain outside grows heavier, bouncing off the pavements. obi-wan’s stood under a canopy with his hood over his head to shield himself, eyes darting around.
“that’ll be twenty dollars. cash or card?” you ask, handing the book back to him. your eyes meet again and anakin looks down at the carpet floor that strangely reminds him of his grandmother’s house, rummaging through the pocket in his jacket. he pulls out a crumpled twenty on the counter and nods, avoiding eye contact, too. part of him, a very large part of him, just wants to crawl into the floor and never return. he decides that he will never walk in this place ever again, and he clutches the book between his bicep and his chest, turning around and stalking out, and tripping over his own feet just before he gets to the door.
“have a good day.” you blurt out to him.
“you too!” anakin says back, a little delayed, humiliation burning his skin as he keeps his eyes trained on the space in front of him. He’s thinking of nothing but how relieved he is to get out as soon as possible. the door opens and closes with the ding of the bell at the top. you grin as you watch obi-Wan outside when anakin walks up to him, pestering him as they both turn around and walk side by side down the pavement, until she can see neither of them.
you can’t stop thinking about him until you fall asleep later that night, later than you normally do, and neither of you knew it, but anakin couldn’t stop thinking about you either.

the bell rings at the top of the bookshop. a shrill, honeyed sound in your ears. you find yourself glancing up with cartoonish eyes in hopes of seeing anakin again, heart stopping for a split second before you calm down again.
it’s a monday. a warm one, but you feel strangely serene. it’s been five days on the dot since you’ve seen both anakin and obi-wan, and they somehow only seem to be the only customers that treat you like an actual person. intimidation, filthy looks, lack of respect. yeah, it was the bare minimum, but it made you happy, and you didn’t care.
It’s tuesday when anakin comes in with obi-wan. in the morning as you drove to work, they announced on the radio that there would be a heatwave (much to your annoyance). working at a bookshop with little to no air conditioning was a nightmare, so there you were, sitting in a tank top with a thin flannel and shorts.
obi-wan walks in with a slightly irritated anakin behind him, who is wearing a white vest and cargo trousers, his skin covered in a thin sheen of sweat that makes his skin glow. obi-wan seems unfazed by this weather. anakin learnt that he’s pretty much immune to the heat ever since they went on holiday to a place where the temperature was triple what it is here.
you immediately lose her composure, but you manage to recover quick enough for either of them to notice you sitting behind the counter, and when anakin does notice you, it seems that he relaxes. his gaze softens and he suddenly doesn’t look so tense. obi-wan almost seems perplexed with how suddenly his demeanour changes, but he quickly turns around and waves to you, which you return with a small smile.
it happens again: obi-wan buys a book, obi-wan leaves, and anakin doesn’t, but this time, when he goes up to the counter with yet another random book (that he made sure to check before grabbing it), he has more confidence than before.
as you take the book from his hand, your fingers brush up against each other. you fight the urge to draw your hand back, and anakin almost loses his confidence then, but he remains physically tranquil, but on the inside, he’s rethinking his every move.
“so,” anakin starts, stuffing his hands into the pockets of his cargo trousers, “you work at a bookstore. you like reading?”
you glance up at him, brown hair glistening gold in the sun as you scan the book. you look back down at the book again, reading the title. a galactic empire of descending madness. that sounds more interesting than the one he had last week, at least.
“yeah, i guess,” you reply, even if a simple ‘yes’ was a severe understatement. every night, you went home and always had stacks of books still waiting to be read. “why do you ask?”
he throws down another crumpled up twenty on the counter again. this time, you give him change.
“well–” he pulls one arm over his chest, his other arm hooking over it as he stretches. you did your best not to gaze at his muscles, or his vest hiking up slightly and revealing the smallest slither of skin at his hip, but it’s hard—especially when he looks so attractive. “–i have a project to work on. for my University. need some help with it, ‘n’… i was just wondering if you'd help?”
you stare at him in surprise. eyebrows raised, and gnawing the inside of your cheek until you taste metal, you ask, “what’s it about?”
that’s the part of the plan he’s missing. before, he couldn’t figure it out, and now he does, and it’s right in front of him. he wets his bottom lip and grabs the book and the change. the pennies clink in his pocket and he feels like a nervous wreck all over again.
why is he so nervous?
“can i get back to you on that?” he asks, his voice still somehow smooth and even.
you breathe a small chuckle, “sure.”
and he leaves again.

this time, when anakin appears, it’s on a sunny friday, still amidst a heatwave, and obi-wan isn’t with him. you want to frown, but for some reason, you can’t.
it’s no different than the last time he was here, yet it feels so new. you smooth out the tank top your wearing nervously as he walks– rushes through the door.
he walks forward, taking a small condescending look at the display of books, picking up the first book he sees and walking over to the counter.
he isn’t pretending to buy something this time.
the loud thud echoes in your ears as he slams the book down on the counter. padmé, who’s stacking up books in the romantic-comedies section, jumps, stealing a startled look at the pair of you before turning back around.
“let me take you to dinner,” he blurts out. his voice sounds confident, but he’s albeit shaking with nerves and shuffling in one spot.
i’m a mess, he thinks to himself for a brief second.
in the miniscule silence that follows, you want to let the silence go a little longer just to fuck with him, but you're too eager, he’s too nervous, and the sun is watching with curiosity.
“sure,” you mumble, grabbing the notebook and a pen under the counter. you flick it open and scribble down your address and your number in writing that’s almost too hard to read as you have never been too patient when it comes to writing, but as you rip the page off and hand it to him, he smiles faintly at it. an achievement. your hands brush against each other again, but neither of you acknowledge it again. just like last time.
“pick you up at six,” he says, turns around, and he’s walking out the door before you can say anything else.

anakin ends up picking you up at six o’clock on the dot. not a minute late and not a minute early. however, he is sitting there for a minute or two, observing your house from the driver window.
the grass outside grows at all lengths with small weeds peeking from a few of the wooden fences dotted around, which has probably been hacked away since not much of the wood remains anymore. the plant pots hold large ferns, and the trees behind the house are large oaks, thick branches branching out and leaving half of the house in a shadow. it’s small, but it looks like a home. anakin’s about to smile, but then he sees you rush out in a haste, hair glowing in the setting sun, and he freezes in his seat. all of the thoughts in his head have buried themselves, and it’s just him and his thumping heart.
“sorry i’m late,” you mumble to him as you open the door and get in. the first thing you notice is the bruise on his cheek and his smile, which seems like the brightest in the world, but you don’t bother to comment on it and just smile back at him. “i was caught up in an assignment, lost track of time.”
anakin breathes a chuckle, and he nods, turning on the engine with the twist of his key in the ignition. he’s surprised you haven’t noticed his hands trembling yet. “don’t worry about it.”
you can’t help but smile again. the sun’s in his eyes and they flash a mix of blue and green. his hair is golden, and for a brief minute, you wonder what it’d be like to tangle your fingers in it. you have to force herself to look away and out the window.
you don’t go that far away from the city. off to the coast where there’s a van that sells drinks. it’s only around a twenty minute drive and you were both humming to the rock songs on the radio and talking about your week. the awkward atmosphere dissipates as the evening passes. anakin could listen to you talk for hours.
you both settled for a can of coke. of course, anakin was adamant in not letting you pay. with a firm shake of his head, he gave the man in the van a crumpled up five, and only laughed at your protests. after you finally gave in, and tried to hide your smile, you went off, walking aimlessly down a path in search of somewhere to sit.
the sun cast a glowing effect on the beach they sat in front of. the tide was out, and you listened to the leaves in the trees crinkle above.
you didn’t feel so nervous anymore.
you learn a lot about each other in the ten minutes they sit on the bench. you learn a lot of things. obi-wan’s anakin’s step-brother (who’s also a lot older than him), and he tutors at the university he goes to (which he takes the train for every other morning because it’s forty minutes away), and not only that, but he has a major in engineering. anakin learns that you're studying film in a university a couple blocks away and you have a ginger cat called oscar. he reads comics and you play piano and you develop nicknames for each other and you end up walking on the beach together not long after, the sea loud and erratic. anakin never liked the feeling of sand between his toes, but he doesn’t mind if he gets to be in the presence of you for a little longer.
it’s like you’ve known each other for years.
“you know,” you start, taking a sip of anakin’s half-empty coke can. you finished yours a while ago, but anakin insisted you had some of his if you really wanted. it ’s like exchanging a secret and a kiss all at the same time . “i knew from the second you walked in the bookstore, you weren’t actually a reader.”
anakin almost winces at the memory, but a boyish grin appears on his face. “was it that obvious?”
you nod, grinning. you were always good at reading people anyway, but after you got a job at the bookstore, you somehow became even better at it. most people were dragged into the bookstore by their eager friends, bored expressions plastered on their faces, yet coincidentally, when anakin and obi-wan first walked in, neither of them seemed like that.
observant in the worst ways possible.
“i only went because obi-wan dragged me in there all the time,” he replies, trying to seem unfazed by the sudden redness to the tip of his ears.
and you both chuckle, but anakin knew that deep down, it was really anakin dragging obi-wan there instead, and you maybe knew it too.
“i could get used to this,” anakin murmurs. neither of you notice how close you are until suddenly, your hands brush up against each other.
your hands always seem to be cold, anakin thinks, but your fingers interlace and the words die on his tongue. you—not confident enough to say anything without your voice shaking–don’t respond, and you instead squeeze his hand lightly instead, resisting the urge to ghost your fingers over the bruise on his cheek.
and Anakin knows. you both know. anakin might as well write it in the sand, but further away from the shore so that it doesn’t wash away.

when anakin comes back just after the sky has gone dark after dropping you off, he walks into the kitchen to see obi-wan leaning against the counter with a mug of hot tea in his hand and a smirk on his face.
“so?” he says expectantly. anakin stops in the doorway, trying to ignore how tense his shoulders have become. crimson stains his face and he keeps his gaze trained on the floor.
“so what?”
obi-wan looks at him with knowing eyes, “how was it?”
anakin only shrugs him off, attempting (and failing miserably) to conceal his genuine grin. “shut up.”
obi-wan only chuckles, walking past him and ruffling his hair, to which anakin sends him a glare, but obi-wan remains unfazed as he walks out the kitchen.
“you’ve fallen!” obi-wan yells as he walks through the hallway. anakin instantly grows flustered and rolls his eyes.
“have not!”
but obi-wan is many things, and a liar is not one of them.

yknow how Obi-wan and Quinlan are really close friends and that probably means Aayla and Anakin have a weird sibling/cousin relationship. and that make way for some really funny stuff.
for example, the jedi got to pick battalion colors at the beginning of the war, and Aayla's blue right? so she's like, "hm, it'd be fun if i matched with my men right?", and she goes the next morning and find out that Anakin, the little shit, has already taken blue. He doesn't even like blue.
and thats my little headcanon about how the 501st ended up being painted blue.

Clone wars headcanons about everything and nothing
Ahsoka has a decent amount of allergies but only a handful are actually life-threatening and no matter how much she tells Anakin that it never stops him from treating them all the same
And by treating them all the same I mean he’s slapped some snacks out of her hands because he knew she was slightly allergic to it
In his defense the clones are really bad at keeping track of her allergies and because of that they have fed her a couple of things that were lethal to her and ever since then Anakin’s never really trusted them with food
Also in his defense Ahsoka once ate something she was highly allergic to on a dare (the poor clone didn’t know she was allergic) and all she did to remedy the situation was hand said poor clone her EpiPen before passing out
Unfortunately the clone didn’t know how to use the EpiPen so Ahsoka ended up passing out and Anakin and Rex had to rush her off to the med bay because they didn’t know how to use the EpiPen either
Because of this incident the clones weren’t allowed to give Ahsoka food and there were a couple of signs that said “blue to the sky orange to the thigh” around the ship
I feel like everyone in Clone Wars is simultaneously touch-starved and tactile which is a very fun mix especially when I think about Ahsoka and everyone else because I like to think whenever Ahsoka asks for a hug 9.5/10 she gets one
Master Plo is the most used to this cause Ahsoka’s been like this since she was a child and he’ll admit he’s spoiled her with hugs
If you were to ask her what his hugs feel like she would say they feel like childhood or that feeling you get when you smell something that you could only find in your home when you were a kid
Obi-Wan is an interesting can of worms because he’s as tactile and touch-starved as the rest of them but he’s also incredibly touch-adverse which results in him declining hugs 5/10 because he just can't fathom touching someone in that moment
But when he does give Ahsoka a hug she’ll say there’s nothing like it and she would often describe it as a breath of fresh air and very soothing on stressful days
Rex is most likely it give Ahsoka a hug bro is simply the hugger™ and she would describe his hugs as comforting if not a little awkward but grounding none the less kind of like hugging a weighted blanket just out of the drier
She doesn’t get to see Padme nearly as often as she would like which means she tries to get a hug whenever she can and Padme will never decline her hugs if anything she initiates most of them
Ahsoka doesn’t remember her mom or her hugs well but if she had to give an example of what a hug from her mom felt like she would say Padme’s
Anakin honestly isn’t comfortable with touching people he doesn’t know well but when he does feel comfortable with someone he’s clingy
Ahsoka will never admit this half cause it’s embarrassing and half because she fears it would hurt the other’s feelings but Anakin’s hugs are easily her favorite something about the all-encompassing hug makes her feel safe and secure like nothing else
But the funny thing is that sometimes he doesn’t really have the energy to hug Ahsoka so he’ll just put all of his dead weight on her which usually results in one of two reactions from her
one. Is usually her saying “Hug me like you love me” or something along those lines to which he will squeeze the everloving force out of her or two. “Hug me like a normal person” which usually gets the smartass response of “Who said I was a normal person”
So it’s pretty obvious that Anakin and Ahsoka have their bigger competitions but they’ve also got little ones like who can make the funnier face when Obi-Wan is trying to do his work which normally ends with the duo hunched over laughing and Obi-Wan finding another place to work
The: “Who can accurately make the noises Obi-Wan makes while stretching” challenge which just usually results in the clones worriedly checking in on them cause it sounds like they’re in pain
The: “Who can eat more ice cream” challenge always ends with Anakin regretting his life choices and Ahsoka doing the dishes because she feels bad
Long story short they’ve got a lot of challenges cause they’re competitive little weirdos but the funniest part is they rarely keep score of who the winner is so they’re in an endless cycle of useless competitions
Obi-Wan has slowly collected mugs for everyone he’s close with and they have a nice little home in his otherwise empty mug cupboard
Anakin and Padme have matching from Naboo because Obi-Wan took them shopping when they were pretty young
Padme can’t drink tea with them as often as she would like but when she can schedule a small tea break Anakin makes sure to smuggle all their mugs out of Obi-Wan’s kitchen
Ahsoka’s mug is possibly one of Obi-Wan's favorites it’s a good size and practical but’s also got nice intricate color-changing details because they both thought it looked cool
Cody and Obi-Wan’s mugs are pretty similar but their main difference is the childlike handwriting on the bottom of one that says “to: Obi from: Ani”
Rex doesn’t get a mug until later and it’s the most unconventional and inconvenient mug in all of creation the poor dude has to hold it from the sides because his hands don’t fit in the handle
And its design pisses Obi-Wan off every time he sees it the only thing that’s stopping him from smashing it into hundreds of little pieces is that Rex picked it so in the cupboard it stays
Sometimes the group forgets that Ahsoka isn’t human which leads to very funny circumstances
Like Rex losing a decent amount of credits trying to call Ahsoka’s “bluff” of being able to bench twice his weight
Or at the fact that Obi-Wan was once hiding from Ahsoka and Anakin because he didn’t want the duo to see the extent of his injuries from a solo mission
But he forgot that Ahsoka could smell and hear better than the average being so she was able to track him down pretty fast (she was also freaked out cause she could hear his erratic heartbeat and smell the blood so that wasn’t a pleasant experience for her)
Or the number of times when she’s eaten an unholy amount of food just for Anakin to wake up at 3 am to find her scavenging for more cause she’s still hungry
And let me tell you seeing some small hunched-over little creature with reflective eyes at that time of night would make even the chosen one screech like a banshee

Not to randomly appear in this fandom and rant, but it’s like missing the whole point of Obi-Wan’s character arc to blame Anakin solely for screwing up that relationship. It takes two to tango. Anakin was selfish and immature, but so was Obi-Wan! He:
Never told anakin he cared, or any of his emotions. Thus screwing any possible emotional connection
Never expressed in any way that he was proud of him and instead repeatedly complained about him
Brushed off or mocked all of Anakin’s attempts at affection
Like Obi-Wan really didn’t give Anakin many reasons to believe he’d support him. Anakin was self conscious and desperate for affection, which made him easily feel unloved and alone. But Obi-Wan did not help by hiding any love he had for Anakin due to his fear of attachments.
Why did Obi fear attachments?
Obi-Wan had no family and Qui-Gon was the opposite of affectionate. He didn’t know how to show love, and he didn’t want to fail. A Jedi doesn’t fail. They do or do not. So he did not.
Obi-Wan had to let go of Satine, his first relationship, and it broke his heart. Because Obi-Wan loves devotedly. Anakin loves passionately like a fire, but Obi-Wan loves like a worshiper. He keeps promises and quietly worships the ground the person walks on. And he had to let the object of his worship go. Unlike Anakin, Obi-Wan can let go, but he doesn’t forget. Obi-Wan never wants to lose anyone. It feels like failure. He is terrified of losing his attachments.
Before Qui-Gon Obi-Wan has this encompassing desire for approval which, from Qui-Gon’s constant abandonment throughout their relationship (he’s such a deadbeat), sharpens into a fear of rejection. Obi-Wan doesn’t want to be rejected by the Jedi Order, so he becomes the perfect Jedi. He doesn’t want to be rejected by Anakin, so he makes himself necessary. He’s so terrified of rejection, that he never puts himself out there to be rejected. So he deflects and deflects.
Then of course there’s the Jedi Order forebading attachment. It’s very per-Jedi how that is defined, Qui-Gon commits to this by being very ungrounded and “going with the force”. This does not work for Obi-Wan. He is a stressed little Jedi. He is so unbelievably grounded. He cares about everything. He can’t not. So he represses and pretends to be this very strict person he isn’t. And you can tell this looms over Obi-Wan. His inability to meet this expectation. His inability to be indifferent. Because Obi-Wan doesn’t like failing.
And by the time he figures out that he can be himself and show affection, and finds his middle ground of loving and caring altruistically, it’s too late. Anakin already feels too alone. And because of all the other fears we’ve addressed, Obi-Wan is too afraid of rejection and loss to actually reach out really clearly.
“He’ll be fine.” He thinks. Except he’s not fine. Anakin is not fine. And all of Obi-Wan’s fears happen because he puts his head in the sand and pretends he’s not attached. It’s so counterintuitive. Like just talk to him!! Admit you care!!! Oh my gooood!!!! It’s Shakespeare level miscommunication.
But by Luke Obi-Wan has learned from his mistakes, he’s so affectionate and nice to Luke when he trains him. So “I’m proud of you.” So positive reinforcement.
It takes him comedically long to come to the basic realisation that if you want your younger sibling to know how much you care for him just, like, tell him?? Miscommunication and you taking on everything and feeling unappreciated isn’t an inevitable fact of life. You can just communicate?? And show affection?? The Jedi Order isn’t stopping you???
But hey I wouldn’t love Obi-Wan if he wasn’t a mess.

Master-padawan relationships are so fascinating in their uniqueness.
Specifically in how unique each relationship is based on age difference between master and padawan.
Obi-Wan is 13 when he becomes Qui-Gon’s padawan, compared to Anakin’s 9. But Qui-Gon is in his late 30s compared to Obi-Wan’s mid-20s as a master. This means Obi-Wan’s relationship is closer to a father-son with his master, versus brotherly with Anakin.
Anakin and Ahsoka are even more like siblings, being so close in age (seriously, how was Anakin allowed a padawan at 19)
So some padawans are growing up with a parental figure. Others with more of a sibling.
The way this would change each Jedi is fundamental. We see this clearly with Obi-Wan compared to Anakin.
Undoubtedly, I also believe it would have impacted Anakin’s fall to the dark side.
It wouldn’t have prevented it (very little if anything could have; it’s what makes the prequels a tragedy) but with a father-figure- someone to reprimand him, to be more authoritative, etc.- perhaps he would have lent less heavily on Palpatine.
Perhaps he would have been guided more openly through his relationship with Padme (here I feel Qui-Gon would have been happy to actually talk about it)
Perhaps Anakin would have felt he could get away with less leading up to his fall. He would have tried harder to stick to the Jedi way- to emulate a father, rather than out-compete a brother.
And yet, equally, I think it could have made his fall all the more terrible.
Often, bitterness for a parent is so much heavier than for a sibling. Anakin would have killed Qui-Gon. He would have levelled so much blame on him. From a slightly different perspective, may even have fallen to the dark side sooner- driven there by resentment, by a need to prove himself.
Obviously, there are so many other factors at play that shaped the way Anakin turned out versus Obi-Wan, but I think their differing master-padawan relationships from an age perspective are hugely important.
What do you think?
(also, how would Ashoka’s life have been different if, say Obi-Wan, was her master?)
#i’m not blaming obi-wan#as i said i don’t believe anything could have prevented anakin’s fall#nor is this pro or anti qui-gon#i don’t really have any strong feelings in that regard#do you think other jedi could tell?#like how you can tell someone’s an only child#‘skywalker was *so* raised by a sibling not a parent’#‘the kid’s feral’#pro jedi#jedi#jedi council#star wars#jedi discourse#obi wan star wars#obi wan kenobi#obi wan and anakin#anakin skywalker#darth vader#light side#dark side#qui gon jinn#qui gon and obi wan#qui gon lives#palpatine

Congrats on 800 🥳 !!!!
For a quote-ficlet request, Commander Cody and Ahsoka Tano (underappreciated duo imo)! “What did Skywalker do now?”
THANK YOU SO MUCH and THANK YOU very much for the ask! I completely agree that they are an underappreciated duo! I hope you dig what I came up with!
Rating: T
Warnings: language, extremely fluffy sibling dynamics
Word Count: 1.6k words
“Ah good. Anakin’s returned.”
Cody glanced up just in time to see the 501st’s gunship landing in the hangar of their Venator. The doors hissed open, and he felt himself already doing the mental tally in his mind, checking off brothers as they stepped out one by one. Their numbers still appeared to be mostly intact, and Cody felt himself relax slightly, especially when he caught a glimpse of a pair of painted blue Jaig eyes emerging from inside the ship.
“I’m curious how his mission went,” General Kenobi remarked. “Hopefully, he and Ahsoka were able to hold the line on the eastern front. That will make recapturing the capital city much easier.”
Cody had a sneaking suspicion that things hadn’t gone quite according to plan. They rarely did when his general’s former padawan was left unsupervised. The first glimpse he caught of Skywalker’s new padawan only seemed to confirm that suspicion. He could already see something was off in the way the young Togruta’s shoulders slumped as she strode off of the gunship. Her eyes were glassy, and her teeth were digging firmly into her bottom lip. She was clearly trying to keep her head up and put on a brave front, but something had battered her, and judging by the fact that she had no visible injuries, Cody suspected it was her master. His mouth turned downward in annoyance.
What did Skywalker do now?
It wasn’t that he thought Skywalker was necessarily cruel for the sake of being cruel; he just hadn’t wanted a padawan, a fact that he had made abundantly clear to that padawan despite her not being at fault in any of this. She was a child, one that had been placed on a transport and sent into a warzone. And Anakin had yet to accept that fact and adapt to it, something Cody couldn’t understand.
We always took care of the cadets. Always protected them when we could. Always looked forward to mentoring them so that they would be able to stay safe. Why won’t he do the same for her?
Rex had told him what Skywalker had been subjecting his padawan to for training, and quite frankly, it enraged him. While Cody was as stringent about preparing his men and their counterparts for battle as anyone, he vehemently disagreed with Skywalker’s methods for a multitude of reasons.
Firing on a teenager, even with stun bolts? Unacceptable.
Rex had confessed how much he hated it after a few rounds at 79s, and while he had to support his general in front of his men and toe the line, watching the young Togruta’s confidence slowly slip away under her reluctant master’s constant berating was beginning to wear on him as well. Cody had teased his brother relentlessly about how quickly he’d become protective of Ahsoka, joking that she might as well share their face and have been born from a tube.
But in spite of all of his teasing, he understood it. He couldn’t deny he felt a certain level of protectiveness over her as well, as did Kenobi. When he’d found out that his general had initially thought she was assigned as his padawan, Cody had allowed himself to think about how things might have been different, how she’d have been leading with him rather than Rex. He’d liked the thought of having her around, but he also knew Ahsoka had had a positive impact on Rex, and that the two of them working together had maybe tempered some of his brother’s recklessness.
Kenobi would have been the better choice, of that he was certain. His general was empathetic to a fault at times, normally very cognizant of the feelings of the people around him. However, at the moment, it seemed that his general was completely focused on his former padawan, oblivious to the mood of the young Togruta as he strode by her, absently resting a hand on her shoulder in greeting as he passed. Cody could see the touch brought her little comfort as Kenobi continued past, not even sparing her a second glance as he greeted Skywalker. Anakin was obviously in a foul mood, his brows knitted together in his trademark scowl. Ahsoka turned and looked over her shoulder at master one more time as he exited the gunship, clearly hoping for some sort of reprieve, but Skywalker pointedly ignored her, meeting Kenobi and walking off with him in the opposite direction with Rex in tow. The captain of the 501st removed his helmet as he fell into step behind them, his gaze lingering on Ahsoka as she slumped off before he turned and met Cody’s eyes with a pleading look. The unspoken ask was clear.
Keep an eye on her.
Cody gave him a short nod, and Rex responded with a grateful grimace before he disappeared out of the hangar with their commanding officers.
Ahsoka had made her way over to one of the large windows on the hangar deck and was hugging herself tightly, staring out at the starfield before her. Cody ran his hand through his short-cropped, regulation haircut before sighing to himself and striding over. She didn’t turn to look at him when he stopped next to her, her eyes only briefly flicking over to where he stood before returning to the empty space ahead of them.
They’d had a few interactions, all of which were brief and simple, but this time, Cody wasn’t quite certain where to start. He didn’t want to drag Skywalker through the mud in front of her. As far as he understood Jedi tradition, she was permanently bound to her master, and they had to figure each other out. Driving an even larger wedge in between them wouldn’t help things, and it would only make Rex and his brothers less safe if their two Jedi leaders were at odds. But she wouldn’t want to be coddled either, that much he’d gathered from her personality. She was a good kid, as stubborn as her master, but above all, determined to prove that she was competent, that she could do this, that she would do this. It just might take more time than she had patience for.
Cody wet his lips. “Would you like to talk about it?”
Ahsoka shrugged, but he could see her eyes were still glossy. “Same as always," she muttered. "I disappointed Master Skywalker again. Did something wrong, and apparently, I somehow should have known better.” She sniffed. “I know he didn’t want me, and I’m trying so hard to be a good padawan and a good leader, but I don’t have it all figured out yet, and I feel like I can’t learn it all fast enough. Like I’ll never be good enough.”
Cody nodded, thinking for a moment before taking a deep breath and wading in. “You know, no matter how many times I come up here, I never get used to the number of stars I can see from this deck. More than I can from any planet’s surface.”
The padawan was quiet for a moment before dipping her chin in agreement, not questioning his abrupt change of topic. “They’re really pretty.”
“That they are. But you know, it’s always funny to me how they all look the same from here,” he noted. Ahsoka turned to him, raising one eyebrow in curiosity, clearly wondering where he was going with this. Cody pressed forward. “They’re all different when you’re up close. Some are burning hot and blue, while others are cooler and red. Some are massive and others are smaller. A few are part of a binary system with two stars, some have even more than that, relying on one another to keep things in balance, but you can’t see them separately from here. Some are at the beginning of their life, others moments from going supernova or burning out. All so different, but from here, they all look the same.”
Ahsoka rocked on her heels. “I suppose that’s true.”
Cody flexed his fingers, glancing over down at her to see if his hastily cobbled-together metaphor was landing. She was clearly mulling it over, but he decided to maybe be a bit more clear rather than letting her meander towards his meaning. There were enough riddles and metaphors in her Jedi training.
Crossing his arms over his chest, he leaned down and nudged her with his shoulder, knocking her slightly off balance. “What I’m trying to say is it’s easy to think we’ve all got our shit together at a distance. Jedi, clones, even other padawans. But everyone is on their own path. Sometimes we are burning brightly, sometimes we're close to burning out, and sometimes we’re relying on the ones around us to hold us up, and all of that is part of life. Doesn’t make you any less or the general any more. Just means you’re doing it differently, and from what I know of General Skywalker, different comes with the territory. You’re doing alright, Commander. You’re finding your way, just like the rest of us, and no one can rush that. Not even The Chosen One.”
A smirk tugged at the corner of Ahsoka’s lips as she recovered her balance and shrugged. “You mean to tell me you and Master Kenobi don’t always have things figured out?”
Cody chuckled quietly. “If we did, do you think I’d have a clip on my belt specifically for when I recover his lightsaber?”
Ahsoka giggled, and Cody warmed. “Don’t tell him I said that though," he whispered.
The young Togruta grinned. “I won’t.” She leaned against the clone commander slightly. “Thanks, Cody.”
The gesture took him aback slightly, but he reached down and gave her shoulder a squeeze. “Of course, kid.”

Welcome! This is the first drabble of my Cancer free Celebration and the first drabble of the month! If you enjoy please consider to like and reblog, it is greatly appreciated and it helps for other people to see my work! (Don't repost without permission or plagiarize)
Warning: character death-siblings death...lmk if I missed any (prob did) (also I tried my best to make this gender neutral lmk if I failed)
Pairings: Anakin x GNsibling!reader
Type: Angst (sorta?)
Summary: Anakin turns into Darth Vader trying to save his twin from a deadly illness
Listen to: TV by Jmusikk on youtube
Sometimes, in trying to fix something, you only make it worse. And sometimes it leads to your own demise.
.
.
.
In trying to save someone's life sometimes you forget to save yours as well. But sometimes to the “savior”, it doesn't matter. Because the person's life is so worth saving, saving yourself is no longer important.
.
.
.
Anakin only had a tiny amount of people he trusted. Within that amount you were his number one. His twin, his own flesh and blood. His other half. Anakin loved you with all his soul. With every ounce of the force he carried. He would die for you, and you for him.
Being twins meant having each other's back. It meant being there for each other no matter what. Through thick and thin. From the core of earth to the heavens itself. Without hesitation. Without a limit. It's a pact. A part both siblings play, forever, all because of love.
You were plagued with a disease no one knew how to cure. Maker, no one even knew what it was. Nevertheless, Anakin being the stubborn boy he was raised to be, he was hell bent on figuring out how to cure your illness.
That's how he found himself talking to palpatine. Seeking out his help. Seeking out his knowledge in the force. Believing he could help save you. The bare lies Palpatine fed Anakin, led him to kill innocent jedi younglings. They led him to choke his expecting wife. Hurting the love of his life and his future child. The ugly repulsive lies led him to fight his master. Led him to turn to the darkside. And in the end, because of Palpatine's repulsive lies, only left him with a heart in pieces.
All he had, a secret bride, a hidden future child, a family. All gone. In the end the things he had left were a heart shattered into oblivion, a dead wife, and a long, lonely path down the dark side. Alone.
All because of a simple emotion.
