Matt Damon on how watching The Beatles: Get Back documentary pushed him to work with Ben Affleck again

WALLACE: I want to ask you one question before I go on, about you and Ben. Because, I mean for years: Matt and Ben, Ben and Matt. In high school, you were working together and now you're in your 50s and you're together. Did you ever have a falling out? Did you ever in those years have a point—at least for a period of time—you weren't talking to each other?

DAMON: We’ve been bizarrely close for a long time. You know, I was watching Get Back—the Peter Jackson documentary—and at the end of that you see the Beatles—

WALLACE: About the Beatles?

DAMON: Yeah, it’s all about the Beatles, and at the end they’re playing on the roof in London and it says, "This is the last time that they ever played together, live." And it made me so sad like to think of— Because you look at them and they’re so happy! And Ben and I— I called him and I said, "Look man, you know, we were talking about doing this and it’s like— You know, we've— It’s been 25 years or something since Good Will Hunting, like let’s— What are we doing? You know, we both kind of hit the lottery! Why aren’t we working together more often?" And, you know, after my dad passed, you know, in 2017—and Ben was very, very close with him—it’s like it changed something in us, I think, in a— You know, you start to really— You start to see the end game and you start to feel like, "I want to make every second count." You know, I really— I, you know, I don’t want to fritter away time anymore.

The (un-fucking-hinged) conversation that Snow had with Haymitch REALLY puts Peeta’s hijacking (SPECIFICALLY against Katniss) into perspective. Snow could have hijacked him to hate the rebellion, or district 12 or even himself. But no, that old loser just HAD to finally prove to one of those district 12 boys that their girl didn’t really love them, JUST like his didn’t really love him. Was it a smart move to potentially have Peeta attack Katniss on sight? Yes. But more importantly, it allowed Snow to control Peeta in a way that let him live out his own fantasies about being unloved and having power over his girl.

MATT: The great thing is we have this little company together [Pearl Street Films]. And so now my partner in the company is the hottest director in Hollywood. [...] I would love to be directed by him. I think that would be a lot of fun. And he's clearly a fantastic director. And I'd love to direct him! You know? He was in actor jail for a while. I remember talking to him 10 years ago, when he was on the cover of those magazines every week. And no one knew more than him what a disaster it was. He said, "I'm in the worst place you can be. I sell magazines and not movie tickets." And it was just a big hole and it just took him a decade, but he dug his way out. And I know what he wants is to work. He loves acting and he's at his best when he trusts the director. He wants some directors that he can trust to work with. So I'd love to direct him in something.

RILEY: We have a lot of questions. Probably half this stack is wanting to know if you're going to be collaborating with Ben again?

MATT: Yeah. Well I mean, I don't know on what, but yeah. The great thing is we have this little company together [Pearl Street Films]. And so now my partner in the company is the hottest director in Hollywood. So that's really good for our little company, 'cause people are sending us a lot of material. And so we're looking at stuff. We've got a couple things we've been developing that we've been talking about. But you know, we really want it to, whatever it is to— It's that 'Good Will Hunting' rule: we wanna make sure that we love it. So we have our eyes open, yeah.

RILEY: Something that you guys could both act in?

MATT: Either way! I mean, I would love to be directed by him. I think that would be a lot of fun. And he's clearly a fantastic director. And I'd love to direct him! You know? Was looking at refs and since Viktor has two different leg braces I was wondering, do we think he wears them simultaneously?? The refs don't perfectly line up perspective-wise so it's hard to tell but parts of the one he wears during the Hexcore scenes look like they could maybe line up with the brace that he wears over his clothes, but also some parts really don't and look like they'd be super uncomfy. Also HOW does he take these on and off. Experts weigh in
