I got a job interview on the same day my current contract ends lol. Is my run of bad luck coming to an end or is it more of the same though 🧐
#i really really want it because it’s literally within walking distance and the hours are perfect AND it’s over the winter so i don’t have#to worry about how i’m going to fund myself during the off season (ya girl lives in a tourist town lol)#plus the hours don’t clash with my coding course. i mean it’d be hard for them to since it’s a night class#but i don’t even work the same days i have lessons. so that’s good#one catch - it’s 5 hour shifts. and it’s in a coffee shop#there’s a shop attached to it (funnily enough they sell some of the same stuff my previous workplace sold lol) and they give tours#it’s like a historic tourist attraction with businesses attached to it basically. that is the vibe#and ya girl still has a busted knee. so it’s like. will i be able to do this#does anyone want a limping waitress/tour guide/cashier? is 5 hours too much? who can be sure#i’m just going to show up to the interview anyway. i talked to my mom about it and she was like ‘they can maybe give you a chair#while you’re cashiering or program in an unpaid break halfway through the day. plus your start date is 2 weeks away and you have physio#the day before it. you’ll have improved’ and i was like ‘yeah. all true’#like it makes sense to me to just go there; be relatively honest about my limitations; gather info#and just find out whether or not this is feasible and whether they think they can accommodate me or not#if they can’t it’s literally fine. i don’t really have a burning desire to continue working in hospitality. plus i’m starting this course#and there’s a guaranteed job interview at the end of it; plus job help. PLUS my boss all but said she’d take me back in february#like obviously i want and need something to do in the next 6 months but this isn’t the be all and end all#i just want it. i think it would work well for me#i’m going to do the interview and just hope for the best outcome for everybody i think#personal

@jilymicrofics august 5: coffee
There’s a knock at the door, but James keeps his eyes on the computer screen, his fingers tapping rhythmically against the keys as he scans the inventory sheet.
“Oi.”
James's brow furrows slightly. "Hang on."
“We’ve got a customer situation.”
James looks up, his eyes meeting Sirius's. Sirius stands in the doorway, his tall frame filling the space, knuckles still poised over the doorframe.
"What sort of customer situation?" James asks, his voice edged with impatience.
Sirius grins widely. “A mad bird sort.”
James scoffs, running a hand through his hair as he shifts his focus back to the computer. "Why can’t you deal with it?"
Sirius sighs dramatically and leans against the doorframe. “She’s stubborn. Insists on talking to the owner.”
With a huff, James pushes away from the desk, the chair rolling back with a squeak. He stands up, stretching his back, and makes no effort to hide his annoyance as he shoulders past Sirius. This was the one hour of the day he managed to sequester himself in the cramped back office to catch up on paperwork. Coffee shops don’t run themselves.
Sirius follows hot on James's heels as he navigates his way back to the counter, snickering at his shoulder. He narrowly misses a full-on collision as James comes to a dead stop upon seeing her.
Her. Because she’s here.
“She’s fit, huh?” Sirius smirks. “I mean, if you don’t want to deal with it, I suppose I could—”
“I’ve got it.”
Sirius doesn’t reply, just shaking his head knowingly. James can’t even be bothered, because he knows he’s a besotted fool, but he doesn’t care.
“Oh, there you are,” she says as he walks over. Her eyes sweep shamelessly over him, and he feels a spark of that old adolescent pride. She’s stunning, with warm auburn hair cascading over her shoulders and striking green eyes that seem to burn as they lock onto his. “You’re the owner?”
“That’s me. How can I help you?”
“Well, I’ve heard great things about this place,” she says, eyes drifting briefly up to the menu board behind him, then right back to his eyes.
“It’s… a great place,” James says lamely, feeling the heat rise to his cheeks.
Her eyes sparkle with mischief, clearly enjoying being noticed by him as much as he’s enjoying being noticed by her. She leans forward on the counter, her delicate fingers tapping lightly against the surface. James takes a small step back to put some distance between them, so he doesn’t do something really stupid.
“What’s the specialty?” she asks, her lips curling into a playful smile.
“I don’t usually make the drinks,” he confesses.
She lifts an eyebrow. “But you’ll make one for me?”
James glances around the shop, ensuring Sirius isn’t idling nearby and that there aren’t any customers waiting in the queue. The cozy café is alive with the aroma of freshly brewed coffee and the soft murmur of conversations, but the coast seems to be clear.
“You know,” he says, dropping his voice, “it’s pretty bold of you to come in here looking like that.”
She smirks, pleased. “Looking like what?”
“Oh, don’t give me that rubbish,” he says, scoffing. “You know exactly what you’re doing.”
“I’m just a girl looking for a nice cup of coffee,” she says, shrugging. She pushes her hair over her shoulder in a fluid motion, her deep auburn locks catching the light. James’s eyes follow the movement, and when he looks back at her face, her knowing smirk tells him it’s what she intended all along.
“You’re lethal is what you are,” he mutters, then without turning, calls out, “Sirius!”
Almost immediately, Sirius appears, clearly having been eavesdropping. “Alright?”
“Make my wife a vanilla latte, yeah?”
“Fucking hell,” Sirius grumbles. “I hate it when you do this. Just for the record. It’s really terrible.”
“Extra vanilla, please, Padfoot,” Lily adds, her gaze still locked on James, her green eyes sparkling with amusement.
“Learn to have foreplay like normal people, please,” Sirius sighs, glancing dully between the two of them, before heading to the espresso machine, muttering, “You two were supposed to get less weird when you got married.”

The Dinner
Valeria Garza x F! Reader
Tumblr media
Valeria Garza fic… yeah this is the diner by Billie eilish😶‍🌫️… anyways hope u enjoy
Tw: toxic val, brief mention of smut (just touchy).
You’ve been living in a small apartment, big enough for two people. Waking up at 6am coming home at 2am. You’ve work two shifts at least to keep the rent going. Working in a coffee shop near by, at night on bar 5 min away from your place. Today was a calm evening, you sighed as you walked back to you place, fist clenched. You knew Las Almas wasn’t so “calm” at least at night… you knew you had to be careful, looking backward once in a while, just to be sure no one was following you. But that feeling of someone watching you didn’t wash away.
Don’t be afraid of me.
I’m what you need.
You’ve arrived at you place at 2:30 A.M. as you took your work shoes off and change to some comfortable pink fluffy slippers. You turned the TV on, exhausted as you stroll to the kitchen opening cabinets to see what quick meal you can make. Until something catches your eye.
“We been notified that a near squad militar unity had capture a cartel suspect, just a quick reminder on how Las Almas is quite a dangerous place—“
The TV when quiet for a second when you served yourself a bowl of fruit and yogurt as you sat on the couch near the TV. The lady on the screen looked nervous, quite astonished as she talked to someone behind camaras.
“I— um- we’ve been informed that the suspect we’ve mention has scaped the military quarters, we suggest you to no go outside past midnight, keep your doors locked, and don’t answer the door if you don’t know who they are”
“The characteristics we have been informed is a Tall woman, tan skin, tattoos in both arms, dark short hair, we repeat—“
I saw you on the screens.
I know were meant to be.
It got cut off by you changing the channel, but sadly this was all over the news, you groan as you finish your dinner.
A thunder straddle you as you jumped from the couch, you looked outside the living room window as a thunderstorm was covering Las Almas when a huge thump made you turn around in shock, you walked slowly as you tried to gather yourself, a cold breeze hit your body from behind as you turn to see the door was open.
“Fuck.. that scared the shit out of me”. You mumble as you came to close the door, this time with a lock, probably the wind made that.
You stood in silence as you decide to go upstairs to your room, wash off the stress, you took a shower, put on a set of black silky shorts and a top, quickly hoped to bed, closing your eyes, you drift to your dreams quickly.
A black shadow stare at the corner of the room, your breathing becomes heavier as you can see the woman described walking towards your bed, a knife at her hand, looking at you like a prey, the next meal she’s gonna have before disappearing into the darkness again.
You’re starring in my dreams.
In magazines.
Your looking right at me.
You scream, waking up cold sweating as you try and regulate your breathing back again, you groan as you rest you face in your hands. That’s why you don’t like to watch TV so often, too many deaths and negative propaganda. You sighed as going back to sleep wasn’t an option, finally your body stopped shaking. Nothing but a mare nightmare right?.
You sat up on bed as you turn to face your nightstand where your clock was at 3:33 A.M.
The devils hour.
What a coincidence you thought as a shiver down your back was known.
I’m here around the clock.
I’m waiting on your block.
You heard a weird creek on your stairs, strangely the same as when you set your foot cause by a weight, they are wooden stairs after all, they do made noices, you think. You stay silent for a second as you decided to be brave enough to get out off the comfort and safety of your bed, as if no monsters could ever get you there. You slowly open you bedroom door, as you peak your head a little to watch, not being at peace you decided to go downstairs quietly.
Step by step, slowly but calculating your way down to your living room, your breathing a bit on edge, you hear a noice coming from your kitchen, scared shitless you turn to see where the noice is coming from, but fear not, for your surprise was just a loose branch clicking the kitchen window, you decided to peak on the window.
“Care to have some company, chula?”
A husky voice straddled you to the point you were too scared to look back, you froze in the middle of the kitchen, as your worst fear came true.
But please don’t call the cops.
They’ll make me stop.
I just wanna talk.
You left out a trembling sighed as you turn around to face the femenine husky voice. You shook your head as you open your mouth to speak but for a moment nothing c,w trough.
“I— I don’t want any problems just take whatever you want and go-“.
Your voice practically trembling, fighting the urge to not look weak. She makes a low giggle, as she takes a step towards you.
“Really?, anything I want, careful for what you which for florecita”.
She grins taking a final step towards you, as she examines your face, the moonlight hitting your face in the most perfect angles. You stare right into her eyes, there’s something about them… something about the way they look at you, with desire, lust, possession.
“You know… I was planing to knock the fuck out of whatever perro was living here…”
Valeria makes a pause examining your apartment surroundings.
“But— I didn’t knew there was a pretty little thing living here, now you’ve just changed my mind?”.
She said as she caressed a strand of hair that was messy from the commotion.
“How about I bring you back to my place?, you can have anything with me, just name it.”
Bet I could change your life.
You could be my wife.
You stare at her confused of who she was, what was she doing here?, and now she was telling you she was going to take you away. What’s this a kidnapping of some sort?. You started to panic but something kept you grounded, the way her hands were now resting over your hips pulling you closer to the heat of the older woman’s body. You looked down to her hands as you looked away in shyness.
“Aww, no chula don’t go all shy on me now..”
Valeria said, making little circles with her fingers massaging your hips. You sighed at the touch, she leaned over as she dominantly kissed you, bitting your lower lip, her hand traveling down to your pajamas shorts. As things started to get more heated you pushed her away, as you try to make a run for it.
Bad decision
She was right after you, in a split second she cashes you like a lion stalking his pray, ready to make the last kill. She pushes you right into the corner of the living room.
Could get into a fight
I’ll say your right
And I’ll kiss you good night.
“And I thought we were getting along?, you don’t wanna get me mad princess..”
Your breathing accelerates, adrenaline pumping into your veins. As she Hoover over you, you manage to set a punch as she straddles back.
“get away from me !”
I waited on the corner till I saw the sitter leave.
Was easy getting over.
And I landed on my feet.
You scream hoping someone would come for your rescue, Valeria backing up from you finally when you see her walking to the kitchen, confused you stare at her not knowing what to do.
I came in through the kitchen.
Looking for something to eat.
As she comes back to you she grins, you hear some commotion outside, honking in general.
“My rides here… but you can call me if you change you mind sweetheart.”
She finally said as she caressed my lips, final look as she went through the front door and disappeared in the darkness.
I left a calling card so they.
Would know that it was me.

— ESPRESSO
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
order #5 of the coffee shop series: an espresso shot.
ingredients. barista!jisung x y/n. strangers to lovers?? night shift worker jisung who’s obsessed with music.
allergies. contains: semi-public making out. almost sex in a café bathroom but interrupted.
size. 2.3k
special add ons. jisung loved his job working the night shifts at yellow wood café. he would jam out to music and yell at college students to wake up and do their work. and occasionally flirting with pretty girls, unless they ask him to sing— then he becomes a mess.
Tumblr media
“jisung, the shop is all yours.”
“i won’t let you down, chan.” his boss let out a lighthearted laugh, pushing open the door.
the bell chimed, announcing his departure. his wide eyes followed chan through the glass door, waiting for him to disappear.
jisung’s shoulders slumped once chan was gone for good. now it was him, the customers, and the music.
there were only a few minutes until the night rush started. college students would pack the shop soon with laptops and notebooks out, eager to stay up late enough to get work done if they consumed more caffeine than their bodies could handle.
yellow wood café was always the busiest at night since it was the only coffee shop open for almost twenty-four hours. jisung was always on the move because of it, with the rest of the boys valuing their sleep too much to help out, other than occasionally chan.
he didn’t mind being alone though. jisung almost felt like the owner of the shop at these times. he could make his own rules.
the espresso machine was on, the tables were clean, and the dishes were out, ready to assist the students. the only thing left— the only thing he was ever scolded for— was the music.
he cranked the volume up as high as his ears could handle, carefully selecting a vinyl out of his collection.
he selected enough to queue for the next few hours, carefully stacking them next to the record player.
the bell chimed— right on time.
autopilot kicked in as he began to prepare drinks into the night, one espresso shot at a time, making sure to down a few himself.
his body had gotten used to being practically nocturnal, but a kick of caffeine never hurt anyone.
“welcome in!” he yelled over the music as you walked in, hands deep in the pockets of your jacket, your cheeks red from the cold. the smell of freshly brewed coffee and sweet pastries immediately hit you.
“hi,” you shouted back, “can i get an espresso shot? i have some homework to catch up on.”
the baristas infectious laugh caused your lips to curl into a smile, noticing the way his lips took the shape of a heart. “you don’t need to explain, baby, everyone here is in the same boat.”
you would’ve cringed at the endearing nickname if he wasn’t as cute. “do you always call your customers baby?”
“it’s part of my charm.”
“are you also always this stuck up?”
“do i need to repeat myself?”
“whatever. how much?”
he leaned against the counter, resting his face against his hand, a little too close to you. again, you let it slide. “cute girls get coffee for free.“
this time you couldn’t help but cringe at the shameless flirting, crossing your arms and huffing.
“what’s a good name for your order?”
“y/n.”
he watched you take a seat at the bar, pulling the laptop out of your bag to begin your work just as everyone around you had done.
the sounds of your typing were drowned out by the loud music. you caught your head nodding to the upbeat music.
did he play this so that the students didn’t fall asleep? you glanced around the room, half of the students drooling on their keyboards. it didn’t work.
you felt your own eyes begin to droop, your hands getting lazier, and your breathing was heavier….
“more espresso please!” you shouted before it was too late, staring at the essay that was only half complete.
your ears didn’t even register the way that the barista was singing along to the music, loudly at that, until he paused to answer you.
“coming right up, baby!”
you groaned in fake annoyance, waiting for him to slide the small cup your way.
downing the caffeine, your face contoured from the intense bitterness, but it worked. soon, you were back to writing your essays.
the clock soon hit one. then two, then three.
there were barely any people left, and the ones that were still around were dozing off, with jisung occasionally running to wake people up, reminding them of all the work they need to be doing.
“don’t give up now!” you’d hear him yell out, shaking someone awake, “remember that chemistry quiz? it’s tomorrow!”
over the night, you’d grown quite fond of the boy, finding it endearing how enthusiastic he was, willing to learn about all of his customers, keeping the energy alive through music and shuffling his feet around the café.
through one of the conversations you overheard, you found out his name was jisung. jisung, the barista who works the night shifts. you heard a nickname for him that seemed to stick. the music man.
“we can do it, you guys! just a few more hours!”
you shook your head, waving him over to your direction to ask for another shot.
“y/n! you’ve been awake for so long, what’ve you gotten done?”
“actually, i finished an hour ago,” you confessed.
jisung grinned, leaning over your shoulder, “why are you still here then? shouldn’t you be asleep for class tomorrow?”
“i don’t have a class tomorrow,” you nudged him back with your shoulder, “to be honest, i’m just enjoying the music. what’s the song that’s playing right now? i want to add it to my playlist.”
there was a moment of silence before you turned to face his direction, only to find his grin widening even further— you didn’t know that was possible.
“you’re asking about the music?”
“yes, i am,” you confirmed as if he hadn’t heard you, “what’s the song?”
“oh my god. nobody asks me about the music.” for a moment, you were afraid that he was going to explode.
“i run all of the music here. i have a collection of vinyl and there’s this small spot at the back of the store-“
“can i see?” you grinned, and you didn’t have to ask twice before he grabbed your wrist and dragged you to the back of the store.
jisung’s most prized possession— a white shelf in the back of the shop that chan, very reluctantly, let him keep. it was slightly hidden by messy vines and plants, behind every table in the store. records filled the shelves, a few spilling out to the floor in a messy pile that jisung couldn’t be bothered to pick up.
you let out an audible gasp at the sight, squatting down beside him as you picked up a couple of the records.
“this is one of my favorite albums ever!”
“really?” you watched him light up, “i love it too. the production is just amazing.”
“i don’t know anything about production, but i love the music.”
“funny story,” he let out a small laugh, “me, chan, and changbin, my coworkers here, used to try and produce songs. it didn’t work out though, we never took off. that’s when chan opened this shop.”
“i’m sure you’re good. what did you guys do?”
“mostly rap,” he took a few of the vinyl covers into his hands, placing them back in between the shelves, “but i can sing. i like to play guitar too, and the piano sometimes. i’m also a dancer.”
“the singing behind the counter didn’t sound all that promising. maybe you should stick to rapping.”
“i wasn’t doing it justice! i was singing tone deaf!” he argued back as if he were annoyed.
“you should let me hear you sing, then.”
“no way!” he stood back up, “there’s too many people here. i’ll get shy.”
“weren’t you supposed to be all flirty and cocky?”
“not in front of everyone. only pretty girls.”
“then serenade me, and maybe i’ll fall for you.”
“after my shift.”
“promise?”
“fine.”
“i’ll wait here until you’re done, then.”
“no fair! aren’t you supposed to sleep soon? it’s almost five in the morning!”
“what time do you get off?”
“what time can you get me off?” he smirked, avoiding the topic.
“that doesn’t even make any sense.”
“you win some you lose some,” he shrugged, beginning to walk back to the counter. the shop was as good as dead by now.
“you aren’t getting out of this. i’m committed now,” you continued as you followed him, taking your seat back at the counter.
“my shift is over at five thirty,” he replies with a sigh, “then we can belt out until seungmin gets here while i clean the place up.”
“seungmin?”
“early morning shift. annoying, mean, loveable,” he smiled to himself, cleaning off a dirty cup.
“so just like you,” you teased.
“more mean, less loveable like me.”
the last two customers had left, “have a good day!”
“now its just us,” you commented, reminding him of the promise that he had made you.
“wait until a really good song comes on,” he groaned, refusing to let you see his burning ears.
“stop making excuses. pretty girls will never want to kiss you if you do that.”
“kissing is on the table?” jisung’s eyes widened, “you should’ve said something earlier!”
“you’re that desperate?” you watched him scramble to his shelf, shuffling through albums.
“are you gonna kiss me if i sing to you?”
“only if you’re good.”
that was enough confirmation for him to switch out the vinyl.
“listen to this, baby. it’ll blow you away.”
you leaned forward, resting your elbows on the counter and smirking in amusement. but when he began to sing, your sly smile turned into wonder, intensely paying attention to his voice.
he could feel your gaze burning into him, and he refused to meet it for fear of rejection. instead, he simply continued to wash dishes with shaky hands and a red face.
then his voice cracked.
he closed his eyes, leaning down to yell out in embarrassment, “i can't sing in front of pretty girls!”
the song continued in the background, but jisung fell silent, clutching a wet metal straw in his hand.
you ignored his fuss, “and you’re telling me that people didn’t die for your voice?”
he fell silent. “you sound like an angel, jisung! you’re better than the guy on that track!”
“he’s really good though,” he tried to change the topic from himself.
you sighed, standing up from your stool and going behind the counters— nobody was here, and jisung wouldn’t mind, right?
grabbing his shoulders gently, you turned him around to face you, having to bite your lip to stop yourself from poking fun at his beet-red face.
standing on the tips of your toes, you leaned up to match the height added from his platforms and planted a soft kiss on his lips.
his eyes widened as if he didn’t expect you to follow through with your promise.
“did you just kiss me?”
“no, i just sold your soul to a demon and the only way to do it is to touch my lips to yours.”
“can you do it again?”
“you’re so romantic,” you teased, leaning in once again as his hands met your waist.
“can i kiss you, like, a lot?” jisung stammered.
“sure.” you had to admit, it was adorable watching him act so shy compared to how he flirted with you so effortlessly earlier.
he pulled you out of your thoughts, lifting you onto the counter with muscles that you didn’t even know were behind his loose hoodie.
you let out a yelp, but he quickly shut you up with a longer, more passionate kiss.
his hands tightly held your waist and your own met his dark, messy hair. you tugged on it, making him groan as he deepened the kiss, tasting the espresso in your mouth.
the two of you pulled away for air, taking in a deep breath, but jisung had every intention to continue.
“about getting off?” he joked, in a quiet, raspy tone from the kiss.
the next thing you knew, you were being dragged into the bathroom, the mess of the café disregarded behind you.
he slammed the door, then pushed you against it a little too desperately.
“is this actually happening?” he thought out loud.
“whatever, let’s just do it.”
he nodded, pressing his lips against yours for the third time. you closed your eyes, losing yourself in his lips. you could hear the music faintly from behind the door, noticing the ringing in your ears from how loud it was.
his hands traveled from your hips to your hair then back down to the hem of your shirt. he played with it for a moment, before snaking his fingers up to your bra, right about to unclasp it.
“han jisung!” both of you jumped at the screaming voice, snapping out of the moment as the bell from the store rang.
“tell me this is a fucking joke!”
“shit, seungmin’s here,” he pulled away from your lips, out of breath.
his hair was a mess and his black jeans were noticeably tight around him. he tried to pull himself together before seungmin would come barging into the bathroom.
jisung tumbled out of the door right as the other barista turned the music off.
you stalked behind him, readjusting your shirt with a face just as flustered as his own.
the boy massaged his temples, “look, i don’t care if you turn this place into a bar for your night shifts. that’s for you and chan to worry about, but you left me all of this mess with only thirty minutes until we open again.”
jisung glanced back at you, watching you contain your giggles as he got scolded.
“hell! we’re still open! you never even bothered to flip the sign! or shut off the lights! or turn off your music!”
jisung turned back to meet seungmin’s frustrated face.
“i got carried away, there was this really hot girl and we both,” he stopped his story there, sighing.
“just please don’t tell chan.”
“chan won’t hear about it unless you get to work immediately and clean this place up!”
“on it!”
you watched the boy scramble to work as you finally let your laughter spill from your lips.
“if i were you, i wouldn’t get involved with that guy,” seungmin turned his attention to you, “he’s a mess.”
“but he’s kind of cute,” you defended, “do you, by chance, have his number?”

Within a few days, I'd moved across the country. Even though anyone from Xavier's could fly over without warning, I thought it would be good for me. I wanted to escape Jean and the heartache she brought with her. Jean had everything. I had left, she had Logan, and I'm sure she would find a way to manipulate Scott again. Just like always done.
Given the circumstances, I wasn't looking forward to my return as a teacher. I had worked as a secretary for a lawyer through college to be able to pay for tuition, and I decided that would be my best bet.
I sat in my bed at the hotel, craning my neck at my laptop screen. Finding a job here was a lot harder than I had anticipated. After a few hours, I had finally found a decent opening. It was a higher-level position at a conglomerate major enough for even me to have heard of. I suppose it's not shocking how much the former CEO is always in the news. A fact that makes sense with the understanding that almost every eligible lady threw herself at him and, oh, how could I forget, one of his board members and most trusted advisors had tried to kill him. Twice.
I set up the meeting for the day after tomorrow, fearing that the next day would be filled with an intense migraine, a common side-effect of driving past 2 A.M. trying to make it to California in the shortest time possible. I got up, placed my computer on the provided desk, plugged it in, and begrudgingly moved to the bathroom to get ready for bed.
The next day came, and for the second time this week, I'd been right in the type of way I loathe. When I got up, I could barely move, my muscles aching after spending the past few days stuck in my car, only taking a few long breaks to get some rest and about a half dozen times each day for food, drinks, and the restroom. Changing into something comfortable, I left my hotel room. The search for a decent coffee shop now beginning.
After about half an hour, I found a place that looked decent enough. I walked in, and it felt like all eyes were on me. The feel of burning gazes, the sudden urge to make myself as small as possible, and the waves of dread crashing down on me. My symptoms of anxiety. An all too familiar feeling. I looked up at the menu, order already in mind.
“Hi! I’ll get a hazelnut latte with almond milk if you have it. Oh, and it says on the menu that there’s a white chocolate scone. I’ll have one of those as well.”
“Okay, an almond-hazel-latte with a white scone. Who’s it for?”
 “Uh, Kyrie.”
“Okay, Kai. Someone’ll call when your order’s done.”
 “Okay, thank y-“
 “Please, go find a seat.”
I backed away awkwardly. Slightly raising my arms, hands up in thumbs up. I walked away, putting my arms down, looking for a table to work at.
To no surprise, most tables were empty. For those occupied, their occupants were dressed in semi-professional attire, almost definitely catching up before going to work; the separation between their lives and my own shifted into something all the more evident.
After about ten minutes, a barista called for the fake name I had given them. I got up and grabbed my order.
I sat at a table away from the windows and took out my laptop. I opened my email, checking for any new correspondents, to see almost 200 new emails, over half of which were from Logan and the other teachers of Xaviers. I went to Logan's profile, blocked him, and used the search bar to delete his previous messages. I don't need to read the pity speech of someone who doesn't value me as even a human being.
I scrolled through and saw an email from Scott, an unusual occurrence for him. I clicked to open it but didn't get the chance to read it, the screech of someone pulling at the table's other chair making it exceptionally difficult.
“Why are you- why did you sit down?”
“I’m hiding from my bodyguard who is very determined to stay aware of my whereabouts. Even if he thinks it’s me sitting with you. He won’t interrupt our conversation. So, what's a pretty thing like you doing in a place like this?" said a man with dark brown hair in an expensive-looking suit, "You're new around here aren't you?"
Great. Preppy, rich white guy hiding from his bodyguard, the horror. I laid my head on my hand and took a sip of my coffee.
"And how would you know if I was? My attitude, my dress, perhaps an unusual drained look plastered on my face." A cheeky tone in my voice. It didn't matter if I was exhausted; this could be fun.
"I was going to say your accent, but sure, let's go with one of those."
"What do I get?" I took a bite of my scone. It wasn't as good as I had hoped but not far from what I had expected.
"I'm sorry, pardon?" Moved his torso to face me.
"What do I get if I don't rat you out?"
"You get a conversation with me, not something afforded to most." He leaned back.
The door rings. A bigger man in a suit with short, curly hair, a goatee, and sunglasses walks in. The man in front of me gives me a slightly urgent stare.
"I want a favor. Anything, anytime. Within reason, of course."
"Okay, fine; that works for me, just well, you know help." His voice was now a low whisper.
"Pleasure doing business with you," I say as I grab him by the tie, pulling him into a kiss. After a few seconds, I pull away slightly. I glanced around the room, my eyes landing on his supposed bodyguard. The man in question was looking the other way, an almost abashed look on his face.
"Wow, I was not expecting that."
"I'd recommend getting used to it, sweetheart."
His bodyguard took a final look around the room, figuring his client was somewhere else. Just as he entered he left, without a single word.
Hearing the door close he leaned back stretching almost, "So, what do you want? Money, political support, a fun time maybe. I mean with the kiss you gave me I would think the last of which."
"I'll pass. I just moved here, and I need a job. So, If my interview tomorrow goes to shit, your company or whatever you do is the backup now. Congrats!" My voice was now full of sarcasm.
"Hand me your phone, now. Don't be shy." I opened and closed my hand repeatedly to affirm my statement.
"Pushy, are we?" He sat up lightly and pulled out the latest iPhone. I should have expected that. I grabbed it and slid the lock screen open.
"Really? You don't have a password? Mr.," I paused with the new knowledge of who this man was, "Mr. Stark. Know what? I'll call in that favor right about now."

poetry wednesdays were starting to become kevin’s favorite day of the week. he’d be lying if he said there wasn’t a particular reasoning behind it, because frankly being able to hear a bunch of amateur poets as he takes coffee orders during a slow two hours was a calming end to his midweek shift. between being a full time college student in the arts and also being a full time barista, only certain days of the week work for him and wednesday’s just so happened to be one of those days for him. so every wednesday here he was: working a six hour shift in a starbucks that was in a barnes and nobles, in the middle of a random shopping center downtown.
and every wednesday around the same time, 5:15PM sharp, entered an exhausted looking you with your adventure time themed laptop bag and backpack full of books and school supplies. every wednesday you sat at the same table, ordered the same drink and salted caramel cookies, and typed away on your laptop for several hours till around 9PM. you never noticed anyone around you, always keeping to yourself and staying in your own personal bubble. but little did you know kevin would make sure no one took your table by setting a store sign on top of it, then removing it five minutes before you entered to ensure no one ever sat in your seat since you seemed to enjoy that particular one. whenever anyone did take your table, he would slip in an extra cookie into your bag as a personal ‘i'm sorry’ and secretly hoped you appreciated it.
being as observant as you are, you gradually started to realize that. to realize the overly friendly and cheerful barista who would slip you an extra salted caramel cookie into your bag whenever your table seemed to be occupied by others, and occasionally look over to see him catching a glimpse at you as he worked on a drink for a customer. if you didn’t find him as attractive as you did, you would find it creepy. but considering you found him quite attractive, you still found it creepy but just less creepy than you normally would. regardless, you started to pay more attention to the man. you started to notice his preppy attitude more, and take notice of the way his eyes would crescent whenever his smile would grow with his laughter. you even took notice of his name: kevin.
normally you’d prefer to sit at home and study away in your room, finding peace and quiet more comfortable for your social anxiety ridden self. but since it’s your last year of college, and you’ve basically hidden yourself away all three years, you’ve decided to put yourself out there by getting out more. since you love reading and coffee, and noticed poetry readings being advertised that were happening at your local barnes and nobles every wednesday, you decided that would be the perfect opportunity. so here you are several months later, doing exactly what you branched out to do but not having made any friends. but maybe a small crush on the smiley barista is a good start, you thought.
as you hopped off the bus, you stepped aside out of view of the starbucks window. pulling out your phone, you opened the front facing camera to check your hair and make sure you looked at least somewhat presentable after attending three lectures ranging between 8AM and 4PM. satisfied with your looks, you quickly shoved your phone in your pocket and made your way inside the store. you noticed how empty it seemed to be today, not too surprised since it is the middle of the week and you were an hour and a half early to the poetry reading. regardless, you made your way towards the starbucks and stood in line to place your order. looking into the bakery glass, you noticed the empty space of where the salted caramel cookies normally were. you pouted to yourself, looking at the other options they had. when you were ready, you stepped up to the counter and were greeted by the same friendly, handsome face.
“welcome back, the regular?” kevin questioned, his one hand getting ready to input your order as the other started to grab the venti sized cup.
you let out a soft laugh, fiddling with your thumbs. “if you mean a venti caramel ribbon crunch with two salted caramel cookies then yes, but you seem to be out.”
he shook his head as his eyes met yours, his hand reaching down the side of the counter and grabbing a bag filled with three salted caramel cookies. this is the first time kevin’s seen you smile, and for it to be at him is even more heart fluttering. he’d definitely be writing about this in his journal later- about how sparkling your smile is and how it seems to lighten up the room so effortlessly.
“how did you-“
“you've been coming here for the past three months straight every day, at the same time, and ordering the same items. it’s very easy to memorize, plus your beauty is hard to forget so of course i’d remember you.”
if you could, you’d hide your face in your hands from the reddening cheeks you knew were very prominent. you started pulling out your card before you saw the cash register open and close swiftly, then looking up to see kevin handing you the bag of cookies with a sheepish smile.
“it’s on the house, don’t worry. i’ll let you know when your drink’s ready.” all you did was nod and say thank you before making your way to your table, only to notice it occupied by a small group of people. you shrugged it off, making your way to another random table and taking out your laptop jumpstart early on an essay. pulling out a cookie to get a small bite in before typing your first word, you notice a small piece of paper in the bag and unfold it curiously.
maybe you can make this up for me by taking me out to dinner sometime soon? xxx-xxx-xxxx
taken aback, you didn’t even notice him approach you with your drink and place it next to the cookie bag. looking up startled, he took a small step back and shoved his hands into his apron pockets.
“sorry if i was too forward, i just figured i’d shoot my shot. if i made you uncomfortable in any way i’m sorry, that wasn’t my intentions, i just-“
“how does monday night sound?”

Shoot My Shot

Pairings: crush!jeongwoo x reader
warnings: kissing, partying but no mentions of alcohol, a mix of highschool!au and coffee shop!au, danielle from newjeans is your best friend
word count: 2.3k
a/n: hellooo! i hope i did okay for my one of my first requests. i tried my best to make it line up with the scenario so pls enjoy!
"one hot chocolate for jeongwoo." you sat the coffee down on the table. you've always seen jeongwoo around school and you couldn't help but look at him every time he was around. he had such a nice smile every time he greeted you in the hallway.
since he played basketball, you would go to the games with your friend, danielle, when you didn't have to work. he was also nice to everyone, unlike some of the others guys on the basketball team. he would come to the coffee shop from time to time so he knew you for always making his order just the way he likes it.
"thanks, y/n." he says as he takes a sip of his drink. you smile and walk away. you take a glimpse of the shop to see that it isn't very busy, so you see this as an opportunity to make small talk with your crush. you walk back over and he looks up at you.
"hey, i was wondering when's the next game?" you asked knowing that there was one later that night.
"there's actually one tonight."
"oh really, who are you going up against?"
"jyp high."
you raised your eyebrows. "jyp high? aren't they like your main competition?" you air quote and he nods his head.
"yes but if we win, the team is going to throw this huge party."
and that's when it hits you. if they win, you have a chance to see jeongwoo outside of school and the coffee shop. you have a chance to show off and make an impression. jeongwoo's phone dings as he gets a notification from his coach. "i gotta go. practice is starting soon." he grabs his bag and heads out the door.
"okay, well good luck." you walk back feeling like you've made progress. after a couple hours, your shift ends and you call danielle and tell her that your on your way to pick her up. you're excited to tell her you finally initiated a conversation all by yourself with him. you made your way to your friends house to text her that you're waiting outside for her. she runs to your car and yells, "are you ready for the biggest game of the year?!"
you laugh while unlocking the door for your friend. “alright now, get in.”
"ooouuu somebody seems to be in a good mood." danielle sings, hopping into your car and you start the ignition.
"a little bit." you giggle. "i may or may not have talked to a certain someone at work." danielle grabs your arm while your driving off.
"oh my god, shut up." she smiles big. "tell me what happened! i wanna know!" her excitement bursts out of her. if you could count on anyone, it was definitely danielle. she was your number one supporter no matter what. you told her exactly what happened and she gives you a round of applause, making you laugh again.
"oh my god, babes, do you know what this means?" your friend anticipates.
"that i get to see my crush outside of school and work. yeah, i already ran that through my head." you accidentally sigh out.
"hey, don't be nervous. i'll be right beside you." she grabs your hand and holds it with both or hers.
"thanks, danielle. i don't know what i would do without you."
"probably make a fool out of yourself." she laughs, making you roll your eyes.
a few minutes later, you two finally made it to the game and bought your way in. danielle always likes sitting closest to the court, so you made your way down the bleachers right before the game starts. jeongwoo catches a glimpse of you in the front row. you may have been to the basketball games before but this is the first time he's seen you at one.
the game goes on, and throughout the game, both teams were neck and neck. your eyes kept batting from the court to the clock, hoping that jyp high loses just this once. it's the last 5 seconds and jeongwoo takes the ball. he doesn't have much time as the clock is ticking. he made his decision to shoot the ball from the half court and everyone gasps behind you. the buzzer beeps as jeongwoo's shot unexpectedly makes it, making the crowd yell and hop out of their seats.
you and danielle cheer loudly until the excitement dials down. "we need to go so i can change my outfit!"
"what are we waiting for? let's go!" danielle grabs your hand and leads the way until you get to the parking lot. danielle starts walking backwards as she's face to face with you.
"okay, so what look are we going for? cute? alternative? sexy??" she dances in tiny, turning back around to grab your arm.
"i don't know. what do you think will look best on me?" you pucker your lips as you go deep in thought. then a lightbulb pops in your dear friend's head.
"i got it! you can wear that hot outfit you wore once to your aunt's party a few months ago. that way you'll stand out and jeongwoo will definitely notice you."
you cover her mouth and shush her. since you two were outside in the lot, anyone could've heard her if they were close enough.
"don't tell the whole world my crush, danielle." you whisper loudly. she puts her hands up in defense and starts speed walking to your car. little did you know jeongwoo was close enough to hear that whole conversation. he was just in the car next to yours. when he found out, he was shocked. jeongwoo honestly didn't know how to feel about it, so in that moment he brushed it off as he went and got ready for the party.
it's 10:00 on a friday night and almost everyone who was at the game was already at that party. you and danielle make your way to the doorstep before opening the door, hearing music blast from the other side.
"wait, danielle, before i go in, how do i look?" you straightened up your outfit preventing any wrinkles.
"babes, you look perfect." she smiles as you shy away from her compliment. "jeongwoo won’t be able to take his eyes off you when he sees you. just make sure you don't give him every bit of your attention. play it cool and keep it cool, okay?" you take a breath and nod before she opens to door.
this is not danielle’s first party like this, but you on the other hand have your eyes going everywhere admiring how the party looks. the huge eight foot speakers in the living room, the flashing lights from inside and outside the house, and the random glow in the dark objects around the room has you feeling good. great even as a matter of fact.
your friend grabs your hand and takes you to the dance floor as 'ok!' from nct u is playing. you decided to let loose and start feeling the music, forgetting the main reason you're there. jeongwoo is talking to one of his teammates as he catches a glimpse of danielle on the floor. "is that danielle?" his friend asks in curiosity.
jeongwoo turns his head seeing danielle and then double takes as he sees you on the dance floor. he almost didn't recognize you.
"who's that dancing next to her?" he asks. "that's...that's y/n." jeongwoo stares off. he can't take his eyes off you. a smirk grows on his face without even realizing.
he turns back to his teammate to find that he's out of sight. he looks around to find him but his eyes fall back on you. he looked away a couple times to not seem like he was creeping. that is until he lost sight of you, and part of him wanted to find you and talk to you.
in that moment, you lost danielle and you could only look for so long in a crowded area. you gave up and went upstairs to find the bathroom. the place was big enough to get lost, so after you used the bathroom, you went into a random room to relax for a little bit.
for the first time since you stepped into the house, you thought about him, your crush. you wonder how the night got away from you, hoping you didn't mess up your plan to catch his eye. then you hear a subtle knock on the door. you look over to see who it was.
"oh hi." you say as calm as possible. coincidentally, the knock was from jeongwoo. you stand up, signaling him that it was okay to come in.
"hey." he walks in only at the front of the entrance. "i didn't know you were a party person."
"i thought i'd give it a chance." you laugh nervously. jeongwoo smiles, looking down at his shoes.
"you look really great tonight, y/n." he says looking back up to meet your eyes. this time you look down at your shoes. your face starts heating up from his compliment. "thank you." you mumble, he barely heard you as the blasting music is vibrating from upstairs.
"sooo..." you elongate, slightly rocking back and forth on the heels of your feet.
"sooo..." he elongates as well, rubbing the back of his neck. the tension between you two was starting to grow. standing across from each other and hardly making any eye contact was making you anxious.
you suddenly start laughing, making the boy across from you confused. you cup your face and shake your head. "this is so awkward."
"i'm sorry, i didn't mean to make you feel awkward." he worries. "maybe i should just- i should go." he starts waking away. "wait, don't go." you grab his arm and pull him back. you look up to see jeongwoo close to your face.
"you have really pretty eyes." you say as if your in a trance. "so do you." he looks back and forth at your eyes and lips.
you close your eyes as you slowly lean into him. but both of you end up backing away and you clear your throat as danielle walks in...just your luck.
"y/n, there you are! i think i might've lost my phone." she gives you a wincing look. that moment between you and jeongwoo was ruined and you couldn't help but feel upset. you throw on a fake smile and walk towards danielle.
"okay, let's go look for it." you walk out the room, leaving jeongwoo alone and uncertain.
after you found your friends phone, you told her that you were ready to go. she immediately walked you to your car as she saw the sad look on your face. the ride was quiet and danielle started to worry.
"hey, you okay? did something happen between you and jeongwoo?" she asked sincerely. you sigh, it's not like danielle did it on purpose. you blamed it on yourself for not making a move fast enough.
"no, nothing happened. i don't wanna talk about it." you brushed off. danielle grabs your hand and holds it tight for the rest of the ride.
a week has past and you haven't heard from jeongwoo since the party. he doesn't greet you in the hallways anymore and when you see him looking at you, he looks away. you haven't seen him at the coffee shop either. it's like the two of you were avoiding each other and you didn't understand why.
one day at the coffee shop, you clean off the tables as you hear the bell ring from the open door. "sorry, we're closed." you say, too focused on cleaning so you can go home.
"any chance we can talk?" a familiar voice rings through your ears. you look up and see the pretty boy standing on the doormat.
"jeongwoo?" your eyes widen. "what are you doing here?" he walks towards you slowly.
"i want to apologize for avoiding you the past few days. i didn't know how to approach you since that day at the party when..you know."
you press your lips together, losing eye contact with him. "i'm sorry, too." you say. "it takes effort for both of us to avoid each other."
the tension eases but you feel the awkwardness between you two again. . "maybe we can just start over?" you speak up again, shrugging your shoulders.
"actually, i was wondering..." jeongwoo steps closer to you, his face only inches away from yours. your face starts heating up.
"...if we can pick up where we left off?" he finishes. you try and hide the smile that's growing from your face.
"okay." you slightly nod. he raises his hands to hold your face and presses a soft kiss on your lips. the moment hits you and you smile into the kiss before pulling away.
"does this mean you're my boyfriend now?" you gently smile, chuckling at the boy.
“that’s what you wanted, right?” he smirks. your eyes grow wide, slightly baffled at his remark.
“you knew?” you stand there shocked. jeongwoo nods slowly. “yeah, i heard you and danielle outside after the game.”
“oh my god, you weren’t supposed to hear that. no one was supposed to, actually.” you nervously chuckle. you hide your face with your hands.
“maybe I wouldn’t be in this place if I didn’t.” he shrugs. him saying that made you feel a little better about it. you grab his hand and intertwine it with yours.
"well, i guess since your my boyfriend now, you have to walk me home." jeongwoo laughs and you both head out of the cafe.
after all that happened, you don't regret it because you ended up with the guy you liked. and to you, the timing couldn't have been better.

Chapter 1: Y/n Pov
"How long am I required to work today?" I asked my manager who was sitting just inches away from the counter where the register was placed. I had just clocked in to my shift not knowing that my other boss left a note wanting me to work an extra shift because people hadn't shown up.
My manager shifted slightly into her seat, sighing heavily. "I honestly don't know. Seyoon barely comes to work and when she does, she begs other people to take her shift."
I chuckled lightly. "I know Seyoon is very unique."
"I wouldn't say unique, she has a habit of laying people off. Why I would rather have you work the hours I do than work her hours."
Eunae had been my manager for some time. She's been very helpful while I was struggling with money problems that had affected my family upon moving to Tongyeong-si. I moved to stand in front of the register that is next to Eunae. She didn't move an inch in her seat but she looked extremely exhausted.
"You should head home, Eunae."
"My shift isn't over just yet."
"You look exhausted, Eunae."
Eunae laughed. "It is part of customer service especially in a coffee shop." She stood up, wiping down her apron. "Our jobs ain't cheap."
I chuckled lightly. "You got that right."
Eunae was right, sometimes serving customers here at the coffee shop was exhausting mentally and physically especially if these customers were being rude to the employees causing more stress onto us and the managers. That was the only bad thing that I could think about being here in this small city.
There were a lot of memorizing sights like the small fountain placed just inches away from the coffee shop. I loved to stare at it during my breaks, it helps clear my mind most days. I've been offered multiple jobs by multiple different people, I even had one person offer me $200 a week to be a stripper at their club but I respectfully declined them.
Luckily, the coffee shop was just enough for me and I was offered great staff for the most part.
"Y/n, how is the landlord acting today?"
"Bad, He basically told me I have a month to earn at least 1318000 won or we would be kicked out of the house."
Eunae sighed heavily. "Your mom is still not helping?"
"Not that much, she barely works while she is telling me to get two jobs while dealing with my father's illness."
"If I could let you stay with me I would but I am about to get an apartment of my own."
"I wish but It is what the world is, Eunae." I started counting the money in the register to make sure we had enough to give back to the customers who paid with $5 dollar bills and even $10's.
I was already mentally preparing myself for homelessness, knowing how much of a risk I will be to diseases and even an illness that has affected my father. I am praying in my heart that I will be able to make enough money to last another month or I may have to beg our landlord to extend it even further since we cannot make it to the pay day.
I placed the money in the register, closing it upon hearing quickened footsteps coming closer towards me. I looked in that direction to see who it was and to my surprise it was Hwayoung. She was breathing heavily, holding a piece of paper tightly in her hands.
"Hwayoung, you okay?" Eunae turned around to look at her, seeing her messy hair and sweat upon her clothes. She huffed and slammed the piece of paper onto the counter, making both Eunae and I jump.
"Damn Hwa, You didn't have to slam it on the counter like that."
She was still heaving trying to catch her breath. "Give me" She sucked in the air around her. "Two seconds."
Both Eunae and I laughed. It was nice to see Hwayoung at the start of such a stressful shift. There were not enough words to express the love I have for Hwayoung but I think having her in my life was enough to express that.
There was visible sweat built up on her forehead as we watched her catch her breath before standing up straight. Eunae and I raised an eyebrow at her, curious on what got her running towards us in excitement.
"You had a good run Hwa?"
"Amazing run! My body is pumping full of adrenaline."
"We can tell." I laughed.
"Well, It is not just about the run."
"Then what is it about that has gotten you so excited?"
"That piece of paper!" She exclaimed, pushing this unknown paper closer to me.
"Is it for me?"
"Yes it is! I know how much you have been needing 1318000 won by the end of the month so I did something exciting!"
I looked towards Eunae, still confused about this. Eunae shrugged her shoulders and pointed to me to pick up the piece of paper and read it. I reached over picking up the paper and bringing it close to my face to start reading it.
"You signed me up at an orphanage?" I didn't even read the full thing when I came across the name of the orphanage at the top of the paper. "Jungsik's orphanage" plastered in bold and eye-catching font.
"I did!" Hwayoung shouted, causing some of the customers that were already in the coffee shop to look her way.
"Hwayoung let's not shout, you're disturbing the customers." Eunae explained sternly, signing to the customers that she is handling it.
"I'm sorry, I am just so excited." Hwayoung slightly turned towards the customers, bowing 90 degrees before standing straight.
"But back to the orphanage, how did you sign me up without me being there?"
"It was easy, I saw an application online last night and went to visit it this morning. When I came in, I asked for the job applications. The old lady at the desk gave it to me to fill out as she was thinking I was signing up and I just put your name."
"You basically committed fraud Hwayoung.." Eunae held her laugh.
"Did I?.." Hwayoung took a second to think about it.
"I mean the thought is what matters in the end right?" I shrugged.
One thing about this paper is that the orphanage does look legit but maybe I should look up during my break today to see if I can find its location on the maps. I was still a little bit suspicious about how quickly Hwayoung got the job for me but maybe they were desperate for workers that they took anyone.
"Hwa, How did you get this job so quickly?"
"I have my ways." She smirked towards me and Eunae laughed, hitting my shoulder lightly.
"They owed her money."
"That is not trueee."
"Then what is it hmm? I mean Y/n is right, she shouldn't have gotten that job so easily."
Hwayoung hummed. "What the lady at the front desk told me is that they were actually looking into Y/n. They didn't know what she looked like quite yet but they were going to offer her a job so It was convenient I turned up there and used Y/n's name."
"Which I still can't believe you did."
"Hey I mean I got you a job right!"
I shook my head. "Correct."
"In a weird way but It does work for Y/n." Eunae sat back down in her chair as Hwayoung got closer to us to let people who just came inside of the coffee shop by.
"Make sure to read the whole thing Y/n, if you don't read the whole thing you will miss something and let the company be allowed to rip you off of a job if they wanted to instead of giving you any benefits."
I nodded my head, moving my eyes back onto the piece of paper. I made sure to imprint every inch of information that was said on this piece of paper just in case the company decided to try to lie to me. While I was doing that, my eyes came across another bolded message near the end.
'DO NOT: Do not come at night, throw out your personal feelings before you enter our orphanage'
I didn't understand what It meant or the hidden meaning behind this message. This new boss was definitely like leaving warnings which was normal in this working industry. After that bolded warning, there was a list of potential risks while working at the orphanage.
There were mentions of missing children and the environment of the place causing injuries to the workers which I could understand since I assumed it was in place since the 1900's. I was really glad they told the risks and even mentioned that all injuries are paid for by the orphanage.
Thank god I didn't have to pay for another hospital bill.
I read the application over one more time, allowing it all to seep into my brain. Then I placed the paper down on the counter. Hwayoung pointed at a small line towards the bottom of the paper right after the potential risks section.
"Do make sure you sign it. He can't officially let you be an employee there until you agree to the terms and risks of working there."
I squinted my eyes at the paper finally seeing the small smudged line. I can't believe I didn't see it before. I went to reach for a pen that was placed in one of the cups just right of the register. I moved my head down near the paper before signing it with my signature.
I should have thought twice about applying but they seemed promising with the amount of work they would give and health benefits if anything happens to me while working. I do like that I will be taking care of children which is one of my best qualities. My Aunt always said I was good at taking care of young toddlers.
I went to put the pen back in the cup holder when the bell from the front door rang loudly. A large family came into the shop and stood behind Hwayoung looking at our menu. There were a couple of children with them and they seemed well behaved.
My gaze moved back towards Hwayoung when she practically jumped over the counter to wrap her arms around me to dig her knuckles into my head playfully.
"I knew you would do it! I am always such a good friend!"
"I need the money but thanks Hwayoung." I laughed lightly.
"You're so welcome! I'mma head back towards the dance studio see you both then!" Hwayoung sent us goodbye air kisses before walking past the family behind her to leave the shop.
I sometimes wonder how me and her are friends sometimes but It wasn't my worry at the moment. I just had to get through my shift right now and tonight at this orphanage. I am hoping they are really nice to me.

It reached 6 pm right on the dot. The clock that was set up in Eunae's spot went off reminding her and me that It was our time to go home. I finished with the last customers who came in and ordered their late night coffees. I understood completely why some of them needed it that bad since work drains a person mentally.
Then I placed my apron onto the wall hanger in the break room near the door. Once I finally clocked out, my other manager Seyoon entered the break room. She grinned towards me, placing a hand on her hip.
"Are you taking my shift?"
"I'm sorry Seyoon but I have to go to my other job."
"Other Job? Who else would hire you?" Seyoon snickered out.
I took a step back from the door when I noticed Eunae entering the break room. Eunae looked towards Seyoon before clocking out herself.
"Seyoon, please make sure the coffee shop is closed correctly this time. I don't think we can handle another complaint."
Seyoon chuckled. "I think I was just about to leave, right Y/n?"
"Not really, you have to do your job, Seyoon. I'll see you tomorrow Eunae." I smiled towards Eunae as I pushed past Seyoon who was blocking the entrance.
I started heading towards the bus station just down the street from the coffee shop. It was not a long walk and it was nice to enjoy the breeze that flowed by everyday. When I reached the area, I went to look at the map to see if I could find this orphanage and ask the driver if they could take me out that far.
I placed my finger on the map to point at where I was before looking around for 'jungsik orphanage'. For a couple of minutes I couldn't find it. It was making me think that maybe this place wasn't real but I decided to pull out my phone and go on google Maps to help me out.
When I found it on google, I saw the bus pulling up to the station. I kept a right grip on my purse before getting into the bus. I stopped in front of the bus driver to hand him some money.
"I also have a question sir."
"Hmm?"
"Do you have a station out near Jungsik Orphanage?"
The bus driver looked at me with a weird smirk on his face for a split second before his face went back to normal.
"Yes we do sweetheart, now go wait your turn."
I took a step back, concerned about what I just saw from the bus driver's face. I sighed internally.
Y/n, it is just your imagination.
I hope it was, everything about this night seemed off. When I sat down, the bus driver had already hit two other stops before driving off. While I was waiting, I decided to call my mother and tell her that I found my second job. I know she would be proud about me working instead of coming home.
I dialed her number hoping for a response but It just went straight to voicemail. I sighed lightly, not letting myself think about my mother more than I have to. I didn't want to bother her while she was trying to take care of my father. My mother was starting to get protective of me and I think it is because she knows my father may not make it. I am hoping he does but fate is not always on my side.
The bus reached the orphanage allowing me to get off. I looked straight ahead, seeing the big orphanage in the distance illuminating with the sunset. I should head over to it before I run out of light. I quickly ran towards the orphanage reaching the front yard, that is when I noticed the huge moss growing on the bricks and even the brown burn spots on the green grass just inches from the place.
I decided to take a minute to look up the history of this place. From what I know, the orphanage was built during Emperor Hyo's reign over korea. Which did make sense with its structure and the wood looking rotten. However, I was starting to get a little bit nervous with the human-like burn marks on the walls.
They were in the shape of bodies along with words like "save us, help us, they are hurting us" written in white chalk. I managed to head inside of the orphanage where it looked mostly up to date with the time period. The feeling of the carpet underneath my feet still had its softness while some areas were brittle.
I noticed the hallways were being lit by candles nailed into the walls which added to the swift draft of the wind. While walking down one of the hallways, I stopped in my tracks upon seeing stabbing marks. Some of the marks had a splotch of blood on it.
I think I may go home.
No Y/n, you need this job.
The hell I do.
It was a battle with my mind. I needed to leave, there were obviously better jobs out there than this. I rushed back towards the reception area where a young woman was apparently waiting on me near the entrance.
"You are Mrs.Heo Y/n correct?"
"Um, yes that is correct."
"Great." She walked towards the reception desk with a clipboard. "I am going to need that paper that you were supposed to sign."
Right. The application.
I pulled out the application from my purse, handing it to her. She took the paper from me, reading it to make sure I followed all of the instructions. The young girl put the paper on the wooden desk before picking up a huge stack of papers.
"I am Joy. I will be your tour guide since I will be quitting." She smirked, handing me the stack of papers that I needed to carry.
"Uh, thank you?"
"You're welcome, let's start upstairs." She went up the stairs first leaving me behind. I slowly followed behind not seeing the male that walked in front of me. I stopped in my tracks when I reached the top step, finally seeing him.
The mysterious male was glaring at me with his piercing eyes only to walk past me leaving me alone. That is when I noticed one of the rooms where two boys were playing with a toy but when Joy walked back towards me, they hid it under their bed.
"Let's start with the rooms. I don't need to tell you how many rooms but I am going to pretend that you are stupid."
I should have walked out. I don't know why I didn't.
But Instead I didn't and just smiled at her. She went past one of the first rooms.
"There are six bedrooms on this floor. 10 children are living in each room with the left side belonging to the boys and the right belonging to the girls."-"The rooms are in order from youngest to oldest, Do I need to explain the ages to you?'
I shook my head. "I think I have It ma'am."
"Good, I am happy you're not incompetent."
We reached the end of the hallway where I noticed a door that was cracked. I didn't think anything of it but I did want to ask about it.
"Joy, I have a question."
Joy turned around crossing her arms. "Yes?"
"This room." I pointed to the door. "Is it important?"
"I didn't tell you about it, which means It is not for you."
I nodded my head following Joy downstairs where she showed me the rest of the place like the classrooms, living rooms, nurse stations and kitchens.
"I will be going, I assume you have the common sense to follow the rules."
"Thank you."
Joy quickly left the place leaving me alone. I started doing this stack of papers in my office when crying started getting louder and harsher every couple of minutes. I went to take a break from my work to go see what happened. I headed towards the nursery to find her near one of the cribs.
"It's okay, I won't hurt you."
I whispered it to her kneeling down in front of her. She hesitated but let me look at her arm from a distance. Her arm had burn marks making her arm a bright red. I slowly moved towards her to help guide her to one of the girls bedrooms, tucking her in one of the beds.
"I'm going to get medicine for your arm, okay?" I told her softly, trying not to scare her.
I ran down stairs swiftly rummaging through the cabinets until I could find bandages. I pulled up a stool next to the young girl, taking her arm slowly. Putting on the ointment she was wincing in pain every time the ointment touched her burnt skin. Her tears started filling her eyes as I wiped her tears.
"Can I know what happened?"
She doesn't look in my direction. It looked like she was scared to tell me who hurted her. I stood up and started putting things back into the first aid kit before moving closer towards the door.
"I will be in the hallway if you need me."
Before I could walk out, she whispered out "thank you for being nice." like she didn't want anyone to know she was thanking me. I smiled and turned around where I kissed her head.
"I will always be nice to you."
When I stepped out into the hallway, there was that male again. We almost bumped into each other but he took a step back from me. You could see he was definitely taller than me by a couple of inches along with that scar that came across his right eye complimenting his raw red eye.
He had another scar on his chin down near the bottom left along with his captivating left brown eye. It was definitely rare in Korea for people to have two color eyes and it was nice to see someone unique, specifically in a part of town I've never been to.
"Are you done eye fucking me?"
My eyes widened when his voice turned cold like ice.
"No sir, I was not eye fucking you."
Right when he was about to respond a nun walked up to the both of us.
"Dinner is at 6:30 pm. Bedtime is at 8:30 pm. Don't be late next time."
I looked at her confused. "It is 8:30?"
The nun walked away from me not answering my question. I didn't pay any mind to it and walked past the male to put the rest of the children to bed. I entered one of the rooms where the young boys were jumping on the beds.
"Please, let's get you all to bed hmm?" I tried to convince them but they didn't listen quite well.
"Get into bed, do you want the boogeyman to come out and get you?" I saw the mysterious male enter the room and leaned against the doorframe. He chuckled while each of the little kids went up to him to say goodnight.
"Unnie was so nice to us! She helped Jian today after the meanies hurt her!"
That is when I saw a smile on his face. It was definitely memorizing. I was slowly learning the concept of who the children called the meanies and I was glad It wasn't the mysterious male. He seemed interesting but I didn't have enough time to admire as I rushed towards the nursery to put the babies to bed.
I read the names on the crib, picking up Min Ae and Min So. I sat down in one of the rocking chairs near the corner and started softly singing a song my mother would always sing to me as a baby to help them sleep.

I don't get paid enough for this, pt.1
Character: Shoto Todoroki
Category: [series]
Words: 0.9k
Warnings: some for the entire series in general, but none for this part :)
Authors notes: it's 2am you know the drill
Y/N: no race for this one either but i mentioned hair in your face so keep that in mind, Y/N is female and both Y/N and Shoto are in their early 20's. quirk: temperature. as the name suggests you can simply change the temperature in certain areas or of certain objects.
Beep, beep, beep, be-
"Alright, that's enough of that." Y/N grumbled while rubbing her eyes. Slamming her hand down on the alarm clock she thought about quitting her job and joining the circus just so she wouldn't have to wake up at such an early time for an 9 hour shift at the hole-in-a-wall cafe. Rolling out of bed she pushed the hair out of her face and rubbed the sleep out of her eyes. After going through the necessary motions of her morning routine, she eyed the uniform hanging on the handles of her wardrobe, and sighed. "I'll have to get those coffee stains out later."
Keys? Check. Purse, Check. Motivation? Nope, but considering she was already clocking in at this point, there wasn't much to do about it, she had to support her cat child after all.
And so the day began: late trains, rude customers, loud kids and occasionally spilling hot drinks on herself were all parts of the many trials of her job. After graduating highschool, since she didn't have any ambition of pro-hero or public service work, she was relatively stuck for choices. So here she was doing the best she could to support herself while she figured things out.
It was around 7PM now, and the population of the small shop had thinned out considerably. While cleaning out cups, Y/N heard the bell above the door tinkle quietly, and sighing she reluctantly pulled out her notepad. Not bothering to look up she asked the stranger what they would like to drink in a monotone voice. The response she got back was pretty standard but after writing the order down, and going to ask for a name, she stopped dead in her tracks. She was met with red and white hair, and two hetero-chromatic eyes (with a huge scar to match) staring at back at her.
Taking a look at the outfit he had on, her first impression was that whoever this man was, he was probably either a low-ranking hero, or some obsessive fan-boy. Probably some sidekick that had shown up on TV beside on of the pro's, or maybe some kind of eccentric PR manager? That would explain away the strange hair colour...
Now, Y/N had lost much of her previous interest in heroes after realising that her quirk just wasn't cut out for the job, but she did remember the faces of most of the finalists in U.A's sports festival -the one she had watched at 14. Blurry memories of the winner and runners up began to swim across her mind. The main three being the hot-headed #8 Dynamight, of course the up-and-coming #5 Deku, and... oh. Right. Shit- wait there was no way he was just casually standing in front of her right now. Did the number #9 pro-hero just walk in? To a place like this? Now? Ah- the coffee, this ha to be the best one you've made yet, don't mess up Y/N don't-
"Excuse me ma'am, but are you alright? You dropped your notebook."
You turn your face back to a slightly concerned looking Shoto holding out your notebook.
"Oh, me? I'm fine - i'll just start on your drink sir..."
There was no way she would let a rising pro catch her stuttering. Absolutely not. Never.
Y/N takes the opportunity to slink away behind the counter and turn her back to him, while focusing a little too hard on the whirring of the espresso machines.
Shoto took the hint and sat himself down at one of the booths in the corner, while he pulled out his phone to occupy himself with.
After a little while he took a break from work emails and paperwork too peak at his barista. Sure, she had recognised him, that much was clear - it was nothing new. But what was new was that she hadn't screamed, or thrown herself at him, or fainted, or asked for an autograph, or gushed about his quirk or display even a hint of any other fan-girlish reaction he'd been subject to in the past. She had just...done nothing?
It was a well known fact that Shoto wasn't the fastest when it came to social ques or interacting with fans (something his PR team had tried to capitalise on), and he could not figure out why the woman had been so casual about meeting him. (Was she not aware of his rankings? Maybe she preferred Dynamight over him?)
And suddenly it was one of those rare moments in his life, where, despite growing up in the shadow of a famous pro-hero himself, and attending a prestigious and well known school, he felt...
Small. Unimportant.
Another quick glance confirms none of the other patrons seemed to recognise (or care) who he was either.
He decided it was a welcome contrast to the attention he usually boasted, and that he was grateful to the woman for not mentioning it.
Y/N on the other hand was quite dejected. She had seen the way these heroes lived - in luxury and comfort - and it only added insult to injury to see his dazzling face juxtaposed against the cracked wall of the diner. She was also gloomy about his eventual departure, and it reminded her of how insignificant her interactions with people like him would always be.
Just another face in another crowd.
She still had a couple more hours of her shift left, and both of these harsh facts were making her more than irritated at this point.
That's why, when the first explosion burst through the door, and her ears started to ring, her first thought was annoyance at all the damage coming out of her paycheck instead of worry for the blood seeping out of the wound on her head.

First Lines of 10 Fics Game
Rules: share the first lines of 10 of your most recent fanfics and then tag 10 people. If you have written fewer than 10 fics, don’t be shy and share anyways :)
I was tagged by the lovely @callieb this time around.
1. definitely better than being dead (on Ao3)
When Billy comes to, everything hurts. He keeps his eyes closed, even though the space around him feels dark, and slowly takes a tally of where it hurts: hands, sides, chest, back, feet too...
He listens to the noises in the room and the regular beeping of a machine close by tells him he’s in a hospital.
Huh.
This is new.
Neil never lets him go to the hospital, not unless he absolutely has to, like that time before they left Cali—no, not thinking about that.
2. Steve's pick (on Ao3) (Billy Hargrove Bingo)
“So you’ll do it?”
Steve sighed, wishing his shift would end already so he could go home and crash, instead of listening to whatever issue Dustin had had with Mike fucking Wheeler. Again. He looked at the clock. Half an hour to go. Wednesday afternoon shifts usually dragged but this one had to be the worst one ever.
“Steve? Are you even listening to me?”
“Yeah, yeah, Dustin, fine, whatever.” He rolled his eyes, never happier that the shop was currently deserted. He guessed that everyone was at the movies, catching the new releases. Lucky them.
“Steeeeeeeve!”
Henderson’s whiny voice pulled him back into the present.
“Oh my god, what? I’m at work, you know that right?”
“I am aware. But I also know there is no one there. It’s Wednesday, Steve. So will you tell Mike you agree we should let Max in the Party?”
Steve heard the bell chime when a customer walked in so he looked up and who the fuck was the sex god who’d just walked into Family Video?
3. finding peace together (on Ao3)
Then one day Steve shows up.
Because there's nothing keeping him in Hawkins anymore and he's had enough of the cold and the monsters and he always wanted to see the ocean.
And slowly Steve and Billy become friends. And Steve is absolute rubbish at surfing but it's okay because every time he falls off the board, it makes Billy laugh.
And Steve comes to realise that's his favourite sound. He can't wait to finish work every day and meet Billy at the beach. He lives to hear him cackle when he gets rolled by a wave.
4. a frankly ill-timed visit (on Ao3)
Steve stretches as he wakes up, arm reaching beside him to find the bed is cold. He knows it’s not very late by the way the sun doesn’t quite reach into the room yet. Billy always gets up so early, even when they’re up half the night making love to each other.
Steve yawns and stretches as he finishes waking up. His body is sore in that pleasurable way that says ‘I had a really good time last night’. He can smell the enticing aroma of fresh coffee and slowly realises that the noise he can hear coming from downstairs is actually voices.
Plural.
5. never fall for a straight guy (on Ao3)
Billy is browsing the movies in the Horror section at Family Video, trying to find something Max hasn’t seen yet, when he hears Harrington whisper from the counter.
“You deal with him.”
“Steve…” Buckley whines and Billy moves closer to the head of the aisle so he can hear better, while still pretending to be oblivious and looking at the titles.
“No, Rob. I can’t. Not after…” Harrington stops and Billy feels a pang in his chest.
6. Steve can't take it anymore (on Ao3)
"I've been waiting to meet this King Steve everyone has been telling me so much about."
There's blood on Billy's lip and Steve wants to wipe it off with his thumb.
"Get out"
He presses two fingers onto Billy's chest and gives a little shove. The skin is soft. And warm. So warm even though it's October and Billy's shirt is unbuttoned.
Billy stares, his tongue coming out to wipe his bottom lip, murder in his eyes.
Steve can't take it anymore. If the guy is gonna kill him, might as well give him a reason to. So Steve gives into the urge he's been fighting since he saw Billy in the carpark on that first day of school. Before he can second guess himself, he grabs both sides of the collar of Billy's shirt, pulls him close and plants his lips on the other guy's mouth.
7. wake me up (on Ao3)
"Billy?" Steve wipes the sleep from his eyes and tries to remember where he is. He feels really good but isn't sure why.
His boyfriend's muffled reply provides an answer.
8. we talked about this (on Ao3)
“Oh my god, pretty boy, just fucking do it already.”
Max freezes in her tracks in front of Billy's door, the juice in her cup sloshing from the sudden stop.
9. only the best (on Ao3)
"Munson!"
Steve looked up when he heard the familiar voice. Wasn't he supposed to be at work? "Billy?"
Sure enough, Billy was making his way through the trees to where Steve was sitting with Eddie Munson.
10. DELIGHTFUL (part of my Harringrove Micro Poems series on Ao3)
Daily loving casual touches getting bolder
Envying other couples who don’t need to hide
Languishing to be away from prying eyes
Wow.
I have more I'm working on , including fics for @billyhargrovebingo and the fic for the @harringrovezine and my @harringrovebigbang fic too!
Watch this space!!

Useful and Weird HCs
Tagged By: Stole it from the lovely @lediableblanc-amoureuxdechats Tagging: Be Fae, steal memes The Nurse Shark || Beth Riley
Tumblr media
1. Can they use chopsticks?
Beth learned to use chopsticks the same time she learned how to use a fork and spoon. As a small child, she preferred to use them to stab at food in barbaric fashion and the rare occasion the Admiral joined the family for dinner, there was a lot of over-correction. Beth’s table manners are now immaculate but when she’s on her own or with deeply close friends or family, she’ll ditch utensils entirely and use her fingers. 2. What do they do if they cannot sleep?
Beth has been a lifelong chronic insomniac; partially due to sleep paralysis and night terrors, and partly a strange need to constantly move, which will actually wake her up even if she can get to sleep. She might spend the time awake in bed reading or catching up on paperwork. If she can’t get comfortable in bed, she might pad her way to the couch and try to watch something on the television {captions on} or listen to music, and knitting with either other activity. And if she has too much energy, she will paint or dance. The only times Beth really gets sleep is when she literally passes out from exhaustion. 3. What would they impulse buy at the grocery store? Beth does not cook; some sort of curse afflicts her and everything she tries tends to burn or come out raw, or too salty… She's a wreck. The only thing she can make is an irish stew in the crockpot, and it’s usually way too much for just one person. She allows her personal chef to plan menus and order groceries. She does enjoy going to farmer’s markets for the fresh fruits and vegetables that make up her primary diet, or specialty stores when she goes in search of comfort food from home: snack-nori, spam, li hui ming powder, hurricane popcorn. She will also go out of her way to procure passion fruit, guavas, and oranges, to make POG since she doesn’t see it produced in the mainland. Beth also doesn’t really eat much or with any regularity, despite having a high metabolism. 4. What order do they wash things in the shower?
Beth starts with washing her hair, back to the showerhead, before turning around and conditioning it, leaving it in for the duration of her shower. Next she washes and exfoliates her face and neck. Her arms and torso, her intimate bits, and finally legs and feet. If she’s running short on time, she’ll also brush her teeth in the shower. She doesn’t bother with shaving; she’s never been particularly hairy below from the neck down, and what little there is she waxes. She typically takes thirty minutes to shower, dry, and dress. She never skips the moisturising step because the mainland is entirely too dry for her tastes. When she has the time to indulge, she will take the longest most luxurious baths humanly possible, often submerging completely for long minutes. 5. What is their go-to coffee order?
Considering her best friend in the world owns a coffee shop, Beth typically begins her day with a quad-shot “Konachino” which is a signature drink Jay makes. It’s a coconut milk latte with four shots of espresso made from finely ground Kona coffee harvested from the slopes of her beloved Mauna Kea. It’s finished with macadamia nut syrup, whipped coconut cream, and four packets of sugar-in-the-raw. If she can’t get to Jay’s and she has to go to some other shop, she keeps it simple with a vanilla soy quad-shot latte. On hour ten or more at work, she’ll drink whatever caffeine is available so she doesn’t actually die on shift. 6. What sort of apps do they have on their smartphone?
Beth actually doesn’t have a lot of useful things on her phone as she genuinely isn’t interested in most things people can’t live without. She still has CitySourced Honolulu 311 ~where one can report broken streetlights, cracked sidewalks, abandoned automobiles and the like~ as well as GoAkamai which is traffic info for the island of O’ahu. She has all her important stored numbers, Words with Friends, and finally Reef Defender, an educational mobile game in which the good guy is a shark. She specifically does not have her instagram on there, nor does she have Tinder or any other dating app, and she absolutely doesn’t keep her phone on her when she’s on the floor. Tik-tok, especially Nurse-Tok drives her absolutely batty. 7. How do they act around children? Beth absolutely loves children, from newborns to teenagers. She treats them with love and kindness, with the same dignity and respect she would give to adults. She has vast stores of patients and will listen to them go on for as long as they are interested in interacting. She would give anything to have children of her own, even if that’s only a fantasy. She often keeps hand-knitted sea creatures or other little tokens for those who have to come through the ER and often spends what little breaktime she might get down in Pediatrics or specifically the NICU. People tend to say Beth would make an excellent mother. 8. What do they watch on TV if they’re bored and nothing they really like is on? Beth has never missed a single episode of Shark Week, and will even book vacation time to stay home and watch it, even if a lot of the time she disagrees with the information presented. She will go back and rewatch old episodes over and over again. She will also watch Forensic Crime documentaries, medical documentaries and fictional shows {{She loved how ridiculous House was, and thinks Scrubs is one of the greatest shows ever made}} but for the most part, she doesn’t really bother with television.

This will be long. The theme is time management, but there’s gonna be some rambling.
So among other things, I’ve been trying to get into the Mistborn series. I’ve read The Final Empire and I’m going through The Well of Ascension. I’ll probably finish the trilogy (some novellas too?) and then catch up on some manga, maybe read the Otherside Picnic novels because the manga was too short.
That part is relevant because reading some random thread I came across this video where Brandon Sanderson talks about how he got more time to write during lockdown because travelling used to take a third of the year. Like I know he is a writer as his main job and it is not comparable to most people, but the part I found super interesting was the graph he had.
I’ve done something similar in the past when I was debating whether to quit my job or not. Long story short, the math was telling me that every week I had 30 to 40 hours of free time while work + commute + work related prep (uniforms and such) was taking 65 to 75 (depending on double shifts). Sleep and regular chores were assumed to be 8 hours + 1 hour a day on average.
In reality, on work days I’d get home and be too tired to do anything beyond keeping myself alive. So a work day was like ->
4:00 Get up, shower, breakfast, get dressed. 5:00 Get bus, get a coffee and start working 6:00 Actually start getting paid 16:00 Finish and get the bus, if I miss it is another hour and a half 17:00 Get home, add 30 minutes if I needed to get something from the store
So that would make 3 hours of free time in the best case, which was a non-double shift and no chores that day. Still needed to make dinner, clean myself and try not to die. Then on my off days I’d take it easy, try to recover and not really have the mental energy to do anything complicated.
Back to the graph, 40% of my time was staying alive (sleep, food and general things like hygiene and shopping), 38-44% was working and 16-22% was actually doing things I wanted.
I had one of these epiphanies where I just contemplated what the fuck was I doing with my life at that point. Like. I had a (short at the time) list of things I wanted to do and no time to even start, no energy and barely any money.
So I quit. Hospitality is brutal, underpaid and underappreciated. Got a few different jobs, started to work on my own projects and doing stuff I wanted.
Flashback is not done yet. Barely an introduction.
For the past 2 years I’ve been on the working on the same thing. Not a job, a personal thing that I’m being intentionally vague about. I’ve liked having a big, long term project to work on. But recently I finished it. So after it was over, I wondered what to do.
It’s not like all my time was dedicated to it, but it was definitely my “main thing”. I did participate in a couple tournaments (extra money and it is always fun) and actually a few months where I had a “proper” job.
But I made a list of all the things I wanted. Things to learn, manga/books to read, series to watch, games to play. I’m not a fan of travelling, kinda triggers me. A few minor projects, don’t really have anything quite as ambitious yet. Getting legal HRT is proving to be difficult too, legal stuff and such is a pain.
But looking back at the video, back at that time where I had to use a spreadsheet to see what was I using my time for; I’m lucky that currently I don’t “need to” work, I still do it a few months a year, but I have so much actual free time now.
I was miserable for 6 years, not even getting into identity stuff. Just working while barely saving money and disregarding my health. Not learning, not growing and not living (how dramatic, but true).
The point of all this is: everyone deserves to have time to do the things they want to. It is literally the whole point of being alive.

+ unless it's a "hello" and "can you brew this order?" he says there's "no reason to talk during business hours"
+ you'd think he's just tired but homie drinks like 5 cups of americano daily so that's impossible
+ pretty sure the guy just hates everyone
+ but anyways, onto sonic already
+ where to begin ohmygod
+ y'all have the most fun together out of everyone
+ hell, even the customers know how chaotic the café gets when you're both working the same shifts
+ you guys are usually alone from 12:00am to 2:00pm before shadow and sticks clock in
+ "c'mon y/n! just one more time!"
+ "sonic we have 10 more minutes before the rest show up. would you PLEASE put away your game of trashball"
+ he always lets you play whatever music you want for the day
+ oh and doesn't like it when you're cashier
+ he says there are customers who tend to get too "friendly" with you
+ no rlly the amount of napkins he throws away with a random number written on it happens more than you'd think
+ your pure ass didn't understand what that meant, but it also saves you from another annoying task so who are you to complain eh?
+ when there's someone other than you two working, he likes to sneak into the back with you
+ "we just have some organizing to do back there" and boom you're gone for 20 minutes
+ but it's not like you guys do anything bad
+ maybe. sometimes. idk
+ 90% of the time you're just munching on leftovers or gossiping about what's been going in the village
+ the rest of the 10%? prob playing your 20th round of uno lol
+ but anyway, buckle up. shit gets real when you two become a thing
+ you two came to an agreement that you weren't going to tell anyone abt y'all just yet
+ sonic just wasn't ready for that type of teasing
+ he likes to make you a cup of vanilla latte during every shift
+ "hey, you come here often? let me set you up with this amazing, extraordinary and never done before cup of latte"
+ "sonic i work here"
+ he's trying his best to not pull you to the back every chance he gets
+ he's so obvious abt it tho
+ just wants your attention rlly
+ not that he'll ever EVER say that lol
+ "listen i know we're in the middle of a rush but i'm just so drained so can i please have some motivation—"
+ "you have the oddest way of asking for a kiss"
+ i mean it when i say that you guys can't be separated even while working
+ y'all have somehow managed to convince shadow that every task is a two person job lol
+ "really hard at work holding a cup while amy pours in the ice, aren't you sonic?"
+ "shadow— listen. you don't understand. i must do this. one cube of ice misses the cup and we're done for. we'll be short on stock and as you know it's really hard to survive in this economy and—"
+ "alright, shut up. i get it. now get back to work."
+ the thrill of your relationship is trying to hide it from everyone else ngl
+ sticks says she always catches you staring and stealing glances at sonic or vice-versa
+ and god forbid he looks at you while you're putting your quills (?) in a ponytail
+ he just loves that sm idk it makes him wanna kiss you so bad
+ this information, however, is not news for you
+ "look at him ringing up that order, his side profile is so—" "y/n you're spilling everything!"
+ it's the same the other way around lol
+ closing shifts with sonic are always the best
+ y'all usually stay together afterwards to clean everything and leave it ready for tomorrow morning
+ relaxing music is on, no one is there to bother you, only the two of you
+ we know sonic can't stay still for long, so him knowing he gets to go home with you if everything gets cleaned up asap is a good offer
+ the comfort of it all is knowing sonic is probably gonna crash at yours afterwards
+ "shouldn't you sleep at your shack tonight?" "no i like your bed it's very comfy"
+ a nice cup of tea before heading home and your day ends on such a good note
+ both of y'all are so obsessed with each other to be honest
+ sonic generally loves spending time with you, so working at the same place together? what a steal!

Period Pains
Tumblr media
*Gif not mine, credits to the owner*
• Pairing: Jay Halstead x Reader.
• Requested: Nope! Just fancied some soft!Jay
• Warnings: pure fluff besties
• Summary: Jay looks after you as you experience a rough period, unlike anything you’ve felt before.
• Words: 2482.
• A/N : When I tell you this is the ugliest thing I’ve ever written lmao. I’m so weak for soft!Jay at the moment and had just came on my period when i started this  a few weeks ago.. I have a few ongoing requests at the moment that I’m working on, promise I’m not ignoring them but I just don’t want to post them until I’m happy with them!
Hope you enjoy!
You notice the bed beside you dip with Jay’s weight as he joins you, fresh from the shower as you feel the heat radiating from him. You attempt to shift and face him, craving the feeling of having your head against his chest with the rhythm of his heartbeat soothing you to sleep. You wince as a cramp hits your stomach, slinging your arm across your stomach as a natural reflex for when the wave of pain arises.
Jay places a hand on the edge of your shoulder, gripping round your skin as he moves your hair to one side to place a delicate kiss to the exposed shoulder blade “Stay facing that way, I’ll be able to rub your stomach” he whispers into the nape of your neck and causing a shiver to run down your spine at the softness of his words.
You happily do as you’re told, still in somewhat of a half consciousness as you doze in and out of sleep with the thought of knowing he was there beside you helping the pain drift away.
“Life your hips for me baby” he softly demands, encouraging you to lift your side for just a few seconds to allow him to slip his arm under you to rest a hand on your stomach “You’re burning up” he tuts, removing the hot water bottle you had pressed against you and placing it on the the other side of the bed “Don’t want you getting too warm, you’ll make yourself ill”.
His firm tone made your heart flutter, he always had your best interests at heart and made the smallest of actions seem natural to him. You’d happily let yourself curl up under a blanket with a hot water bottle until you were burning hot but it would always leave you feeling faint and you’d end up cooling off in a cold bath or shower which really defeated the object..
You laid in a comfortable silence with Jay, cursing under your breath as another wave of pain hit "Why am I a girl” you mocked, digging your head further into your pillow as some form of distraction. Jay would take it in his stride, dropping a kiss to your back and chuckling as you swear under your breath to take your mind off the intense cramps.
The motion of Jay rubbing his hand softly over your stomach didn’t stop, you expected it to after a while but it never did. He was constantly tracing shapes across your skin, running his fingernails back and forth under your shirt and laughing as you occasionally flinched if it tickled. Whether it was a placebo affect or not, the cramps would ease under his touch and helped you get a brief moment of sleep.
You awoke just under an hour later to an empty bed, turning over to see the covers thrown back and Jay’s side of the bed vacant made your heart sink. He was the one helping you through this and even though the painkillers had kicked in, you still missed him just being beside you.
You would often be the first one up in the mornings, heading to the gym before work or just wanting to be awake to make him a morning coffee meant you weren’t used to being in bed alone. He was always there with you, even when you teased him for how long the pair of you would spend in bed on your days off, you loved it and wouldn’t want it any other way.
In replacement of Jay’s hand, you must’ve reached for the hot water bottle in your sleep and that was a mistake. You were now sweating, the clothes clinging to your skin as it glistens with sweat, feeling clamy and gross wasn’t what you needed right now.
Trudging over to the bathroom and catching a glimpse of yourself in the mirror was an instant regret, you were hunched to try and relieve the cramps, hair disheveled and your body was covered in red blotches from the hot water bottle. If you didn’t feel horrendous before, you did now.
You always worried in your relationship that you weren’t good enough for Jay, he woke up and looked perfect, would finish an intense workout and look like a sports model or even concentrating on some paperwork he would look flawless and here you were looking the complete opposite.
You let out a deep sigh, running your fingers through your hair in some attempt to regain a sense of decency but there was no point. Your feelings were being intensified from your period and leaving you feeling worse than ever, wanting to curl up in bed and cry was seeming most appealing but before you can enjoy a good ole pity cry you hear the keys turning in the lock.
Quickly wiping the tears from your face and using Jay’s tshirt that you were currently wearing to try and remove the stains from your cheek was useless, you panicked. Jay seemed to have unnatural ability to tell when you’re not feeling yourself, and this is no exception. Just from taking one look at you he’d be able to tell you were upset and you didn’t want that to be the case, you’d already had a pity day and the last thing he needed was to see you were feeling worse.
You chugged some water that he had left on the side and took another glance at yourself in the mirror, the red blotches had made their way to your neck so were now much more visible and your normal cheery smile was no where to be seen.
“Baby?” you hear Jay call out, rustling around with some bags in the kitchen before making his way over to the room you shared. You were sat on the edge of the bed with your arms folded across your stomach, leant forward in pain as you rested your head on your knees.
His heart pulled at the sight, you were in pain and there was nothing he could do about it. He prided himself on always doing whatever he could to help you in any given situation and not being able to take away the hurt was killing him. He’d helped you through many periods in the past but this was the worst one by far, you’d be able to take some paracetamol and carry on but this was defeating you.
You barely had a chance to respond before you heard the footsteps getting louder as he made his way towards you, letting out a deep sigh as he sees you scrunched over in pain. The noise of bags rustling comes to a stop as he crouches down in front of you, resting his hand on the back of your neck and the other on your knee to hold himself steady as he balances.
“What happened baby?” his smooth voice was music to your ears, he didn’t even have to do anything and he was already soothing you more than you ever could. You sniffed before bringing your attention onto him, watching as his eyes soften when he see’s the redness in your cheeks and the hurt in your gaze.
“Nothing” you lie through your teeth, already knowing he won’t fall for it but thinking it was worth a shot. Instead of giving you the normal ‘are you forgetting how well I know you?’ speech, he simply tilted his head to the side and lifted his hand to rest on the side of your face with a doting look “We’ll talk about it later”.
You were grateful for how well he knew you, knowing not to push you and that you weren’t in the mood to be interviewed like a suspect. Normally you loved it, thinking it was cute how he always craved to prove how well he knew you and could tell you were off just by a simple look but in doing this he knew best to leave it until you were ready.
“Did you have to go back to work?” you question, still absentmindidly leaning into Jay’s touch as he gently moves his thumb back and forth to caress your cheekbone. A simple shake of his head made you smile, you were secretly hoping you’d have him to yourself so when you awoke to the empty bed you just assumed he’d been called in.
You couldn’t hide the frown that formed as he removed his hand and stood in front of you, reaching for something on the bed as you stayed hunched over below him. “I got your favourite ice cream” he comments, holding the tub out to you with a grin spreading on his face as your eyes light up “I thought they stopped selling it?” you questioned, already peeling off the plastic from the lid.
“They did in our local, I asked around and drove to the only place they said still sells it” the pride in his voice was unlike anything you’d heard before as he carried on rummaging around the bag before pulling out 3 more tubs “Didn’t know how many you wanted so I stocked up” he chuckled, placing the tubs back into the bag and watching as you nibble round the edge of the container, too impatient to wait for a spoon.
“You don’t want these then?” you looked round to see him holding a family size bag of crisps, a handful of candy bars and even a box of your favourite instant hot chocolate that you used to have as a child. “How did you know” you probe, reaching for the box and examining the text.
Struggling to remember the last time you saw the packaging in a shop, let alone holding it in your hands. The box feeling so much smaller than it used to from when you were young, bounding to the cashier with 5 or 6 boxes to buy with your pocket money.
“On our first date we passed a shop that sold them and I’ll never forget the look on your face. You told me how your mum would always make you one if you were having a bad day and they’d always make you feel better” he smiled and could feel the tears brimming in your eyes.
You and Jay had been together nearly 8 months and he still remembered the tinist detail from your first date, something you had even forgotten about. A little remark you made as you passed the shop on the way back to the car park, not thinking much of it as who would remember about a box of instant hot chocolate that probably didn’t even taste good? Jay did.
“Get into bed and I’ll get some bowls for these” he collects the items and puts them back into the bag, his tone still gentle despite the excitement you knew he had inside from presenting you with everything you needed without being asked.
You shook your head, standing to wrap your arms around his torso. Nestling your head into his chest as you feel it vibrate from a silent laugh “I told you to get into bed baby” you felt the shivers run down your spine as he rested his hand on the back of your head, allowing his hand to roam up and down your back in a soft motion.
“What did I do to deserve you” you mumble into his chest, feeling him rest his head on top of yours as his hand settled on your lower back to push you further into him “So I did good?” you could practically hear the smirk on his lips, pulling back to examine the glowing grin peering back at you as his eyes glistened.
You reached to place a light kiss to his lips, a soft kiss that told him everything he needed to know “Are you gonna make me tell you to get into bed again?” he joked, tapping your back to retract yourself from him. Begrugingly you did so, already feeling the slight cold from the lack of contact you now craved from him.
Picking the bags up from the bed to pull back the blanket, you felt the weight of something still in the bottom. You opened the carriers to see what must’ve been atleast 5 boxes of different sanitary products rolling around in the bags “What’s this?” you asked, confused as to why he went out of his way to buy you the snacks but you never would’ve expected him to know what products to buy you, or atleast try and guess as you always joked about how little men knew about the whole thing.
“I didn’t know if you needed any” his voice was timid, reaching to rub the back of his neck with his hand which was a sign of nervousness you’d picked up on over the past few months . “Jay, how much do you think I bleed?” you were grateful to see the corners of his lips lift in a smile “Well, I realised I’ve never bought you any so I wanted to get a few so I had more of a chance of getting the right ones” he admitted, your hands falling to your sides as you allowed the bag to drop to the floor.
Your feet were bounding over to him before you could even think, all you wanted to do was throw your arms around him as you had no words for everything he had done. “I can’t believe how much I love you” your voice slightly cracked as you felt the lump rise to your throat, as much as Jay loved to care for you, you never would've expected this.
“I’m sorry I can’t take the pain away” you felt him plant a kiss to the top of your head, another one of his small guestures that made you week at the knees without him even knowing. “You’ve helped more than you’ll ever know” you smiled into him, cringing at your cheesy confession but knowing he loves to hear these things from you, adding to his ego of how well he looks after you.
You both stood in a comfortable silence, basking in each other presence with the simplicity of the background noises coming from the streets below. From someone looking on, the way you were standing probably didn’t look very comfortable. The way you were entangled together, your arms hanging from his neck as his moved around your body to press his fingertips in the various parts he knew you were probably feeling pain. When Jay finally breaks the silence, he mutters the words that at the moment sounded better than ‘i love you’ when they fell from his lips “Do you want some ice cream, baby?”

The Covid Crush
Tumblr media
Evan Buckley x Reader
Warnings: mentions of covid, injures and fires, a lil steamy make out session, mentions of babies and pregnancy, chim being disgusted by y’all (jokingly)
Category: fluff
Word Count: 2k
Author’s Note: based on Buck’s “covid crush”
---
The line rang a few times before he picked up. “Buck’s phone, you’ve reached.. Buck” he laughed making you smile. Even though he couldn’t see you, he always brought a smile to your face.
“Hey you” you said, pushing the door shut with your foot.
“Hey! Aren’t you at work ?” he asked, you could hear the voices on his end getting quieter with each step he took.
“I’m on a break, I thought I'd call and check up on you. How are things at the station ? Is everyone okay ?”
“Yeah, everyone’s alright for now. I’m good too, thanks for asking” you could practically hear him roll his eyes over the phone. “Oh, forgive me. How are you doing today, Evan ?” you laughed, “I'm good, I'm off at-” the bell went off.
“That’s my cue, talk later?” he asked, the sound of his heavy footsteps jogging down what you could assume was the stairs.
“Of course, be safe Buck” you said, “always.” he replied, ending the call.
Although you and Buck weren’t together, you still worried about him, especially with everything that was going on now. It was like your heart was out of your body and running aimlessly into fires everyday. You originally met Buck though his sister, Maddie because you worked with her at the call centre. Buck had come by to see her or pick her up, ending with the two of you bumping into each other. Over time, you became friends and hung out a few times, seeing each other at Maddie’s for game night too. You weren't sure when it turned into something more but you wouldn’t want it any other way.
Maddie walked into the break room, “hey” she smiled at you, “hey” you took a sip of the coffee in front of you.
“Is that coffee ?” she stopped in her tracks.
“Yes it is, there’s a fresh pot”
She made her way over to the coffee pot, “one cup Maddie, you know the rules” you mumbled, she shot you a glare. “not you too” she groaned, pouring the hot liquid into a mug. “Hey! I'm doing baby Buckley a favour here” you raised your hands playfully. “yea- wait, what did you just call my baby ?” she looked over at you once more, “baby Buckley ?” your brows furrowed, it wasn’t anything strange.
“Y/n, have you been hanging out with Buck ?”
“Your brother ? No, why ?” you lied to her, you didn't want to but the two of you made a promise to each other to keep your little conversations a secret.
“He calls the baby, baby Buckley” she laughed
“Well it is a baby and you are a Buckley, so that makes sense” you smiled at her and got up, “gotta get back to work, see you out there?” you asked, she nodded.
“Enjoy your coffee, one cup remember!” you hear her groan at your reminder as you walk back out.
--
The phone rang, you were driving home from the call centre. Tumbling through the console in the middle, you find your phone. Buck’s cheesy contact picture popped up. It was some selfie he had sent you during the holidays of him dressed as Santa to help Eddie surprise Christopher.
“Hello Evan” you answered his call, he groaned rather loudly. “Everything okay there, big guy ?”
“y/n, what did I tell you about calling me Evan ?” he asked you, you laughed, “nothing worth mentioning my darling, how was your call ?”
“It was fine, the regular day for me, pulling people out of burning buildings” he sighed.
“Any injuries?”
“Just a few bumps and bruises on the family but they’ll be fine” he replied made you smile, he could be so oblivious. You truly wondered how he was a firefighter sometimes. “That’s good but I was asking about you” you turned into your building parking lot.
“Oh,” he laughed, “I'm fine, also a few bruises but nothing too bad”
“Heading home for the day ?”
“Uh, no. Eddie wants to get home to Chris so I'm picking up his shift for him.”
“Oh, that's sweet of you Buck”
The door opens on his end, you walk up the stairs to your apartment. “Is that your little covid crush?” you can hear Chim ask him, Buck groans.
“Stop harassing me Chim, why don’t you go call your girlfriend or something?” Buck mumbles, Chim laughs.
“Hi Buck’s friend, I'm Chim!” he shouts so you could hear him which made you laugh. “I’d tell you to tell him hi but I feel like that might get us in trouble won’t it ?” you asked as you kicked off your shoes. “Yeah, I'll talk to you later hun ?” he asked you.
“Yeah, if you work overnight, call me tomorrow ?”
“Of course”
“Oh, Buck ?”
“Yeah ?
“Be safe”
“Always.”
--
It’s the crack of dawn, literally and your phone rings. The only person that could be calling you now had to be Buck. Squinting your eyes at the brightness of your phone, you pick up and groan. “Hm what is it ?” you mumbled, rolling back onto your side, your phone against your pillow.
“Oh my bad, I thought you had work this morning, that’s why I called” he whispered, now realizing that he woke you up. “It’s cool,” you yawn, “going home now?”
“Yeah, what's the plan for today ?” he asks, you hear the Jeep’s engine come to life.
“Uh maybe some grocery shopping and catching up on Netflix. I have a shift tonight. What about you ?”
“Maybe some sleep, a shower and back to work. Oh I also have to do groceries, Chim keeps eating everything in the house” he groans making you smile.
“Why don't you just send him home? Maddie’s working too, he’ll be fine.”
“I don't want to be mean, you know? He let me crash at his place. Speaking of Mads, how’s baby Buckley doing? you see her more than me” he chuckled, as do you, remembering your conversation with Maddie
“Good, they’re both good. You know, I called the baby, baby Buckley and she asked if I had talked to you recently”
“Hm, did you tell her no?”
“No, I told yes”
“What?!”
“Buck, I'm kidding, relax”
He let out a sigh which made you laugh. It wouldn’t be horrible if she knew but you guess he wanted to keep it on the lows, it's only fair that you respect that. There was a pause in the conversion, Buck was humming along to the song on the radio, soon enough he started singing. He was 100% off-key and you could hear the tapping along to the beat on his steering wheel as well. You laid in bed listening to him sing off key for a good few minutes until he called out to you.
“You know, I could pick up some stuff from the store for you, if you wanted ? I can just drop it off later” you offered
“That would be nice, thanks. But uh- maybe you could actually stay when you drop the stuff off ?” he asked
“Don’t you have work?” you asked, the sound of his footsteps thudding up the stairs, you figured he got home.
“Yeah, but if I’m an hour late, it’ll be fine” once again, there’s a pause in the conversation but it comes for your end this time.
“Y/n?” the shower is running on his end, he sounded distant, the phone was on speaker.
“Just checking my schedule, what time does your shift start ?” you question him
“9, what about you ?”
“9:30. I’ll see you tonight Evan, enjoy your shower”
“Sleep well babe” he hung up, you tossed your phone to the other side of the bed and went back to bed.
--
Buck opened the door, taking the bags from you. “Come in, thanks for these” he raised the bags and rested them on the counter.
“How much do I own you?” he asks, your back turned to him while you wash your hands.
“Don’t worry about it”
“No, c’mon, this is a lot” Buck leans against the counter, you turn towards him. There’s a little bruise on his cheek and a scratch mark by his chin, your hand comes up and cups his face. His hand wraps around your wrist as your thumb rubs the scratch mark on his chin, Buck turns his head slightly to press a kiss to the palm of your hand.
“I’m okay” he whispers, his other hand finding your waist, pulling you closer to him, your chest against his.
“I know, doesn't mean I don’t worry” your hand comes down from his face to his chest, both of your hands now resting on his chest as you look up at him. Buck’s arms wrap around you as he picks you up and spins you around.
“Evan! Stop it!” you laughed, grabbing at his shirt, he sets you down on the counter. Buck stood between your legs, his hands rubbed at the sides of your thighs. Your legs wrap around his waist as his arms wrap around your shoulders, pulling you into a bone crushing hug. “I take it, you missed me?” you mumbled with your face squished against Buck’s chest. “More than you know” he kissed the top of your head.
Your phone buzzed, ruining your sweet moment. “Who is it ?” he asked, holding up the phone, the time was 8:45. “Alarm, I gotta go sweets, I have work soon”
“Oh come on, you can be late one day, right ?” He kissed your forehead
“You have work too” you reminded him, he ignored your comment, kissing down from your forehead to your cheek.
“Buck, don’t” you muttered as your hand came up to the back of his head, your fingers tangled in his hair. You knew the game he was playing and it was a dangerous one.
“10 minutes” he mumbled, his lips against your skin, now moving down to your neck.
“5 minutes” you bargained with him. Buck laughed and shook his head, “you know we’re gonna be here for more than 10 minutes right ?” His hands cupped your face as he leaned in for a kiss, one of your hands grabbed his shirt and pulled him closer to you, closing the gap between the two of you. Buck’s hands slid down from your face to your chest and then to your stomach, ending up on your hips. You pull on his shirt, he lets go of you for a moment to pull it off and then his lips are back on yours.
The two of you are so wrapped up in each other that you don't notice the front door unlock, Chim walks in to find the two of you making out in the kitchen. Buck’s shirt is on the floor, Chim picks it up and tosses it at the two of you.
“Are you guys serious ?” he groans as he shuts the door. You pull away from Buck, a blush across your cheeks. “Hey Chim,” Buck laughed, pulling back on his shirt. “Thought you had work ?” Buck asks, Chim shakes his head. “I’m done, shift changes in an hour.”
“You guys couldn't have made out in bed or something ? Like a normal couple ?” Chim asks, you and Buck reply at the same time, “we’re not a couple” the two of you look at each other and smile.
“Whatever, but c’mon! I eat breakfast there guys, that’s gross” his face screwed with disgust making you laugh. “Sorry” you gave him a smile, looking over at him, now on his way to the bathroom. Buck’s hand comes up to your chin, pulling your attention back to him, his lips are on yours again.
“You guys do know you're breaking the social distance regulations right now, right ?!” Chim shouted from the bathroom, you could hear him laughing.
“Shut up!” Buck shouted back, his hands cupping your face and pulling you back in for another kiss.

Claire...may I request a lil' writing? I'm thinking of Javi maybe post Columbia and he builds up a routine. He goes to the same coffee shop every morning on his way to work and of course picks up the same order. You're a barista at the coffee shop and eventually, you can pin down his arrival to the minute so one day, you make his drink for the exact moment when he gets there, with your number written on the cup cause screw it, he's damn hot. What would happen? <3
Oh Maia, this was FUN to write for you!!! I hope you enjoy it! :D
Exciting update!!! GIF and media genius @nicolethered made an amazing video for me to go with this fic!! Go give her big love!!
Second exciting update! I was challenged by @quica-quica-quica to play the POV game for this piece (where someone Asks you to rewrite a piece from a different character's POV). So now there is a companion piece to this from Javier's POV, called: "Coffee Shop Girl". Enjoy!
For Now
Word count: 3900+
Rating: explicit, 18+ only
Outline: Javier Peña x “You” (Austin coffee shop barista; cis/het female reader; “blank canvas”/no physical description/no name/no use of “Y/N”)
Warnings: slow-burn; oral sex/F receiving; vaginal fingering; protected P/V sex; cigarette smoking
Ten days. It took ten days between the first arrival of the handsome stranger and you ending up in his bed. A new personal record for you, given how reserved you normally were. But it was nothing to be ashamed of, as long as you were careful. It was the 90s now after all, there was zero reason to have to keep your knees closed until marriage, as long as you used condoms and got tested regularly.
You liked the coffee shop well enough, situated on the southern end of downtown near the warehouses and a few clubs. It drew a full spectrum of Austinites: college kids closing out their club nights with breakfast tacos and pastries before going home to crash; early morning construction workers, employees from the big post office around the corner; and the usual boring lawyers and office staff who started streaming in around 7:30 every weekday morning. You could do the job well enough, even considering the odd hours: waking up early enough to open the doors at 5:30, serve the slow trickle of early morning customers with patience and ease until a co-worker joined at 7:00 for the morning rush. And the barista and food service parts of the job were physically but not mentally demanding. It was a job, and certainly less hassle than your bartending gig some weekends. At least here you only had to throw drunks out once a month.
And then one Tuesday in early June, at 7:47 a.m., he appeared. Tall, neatly groomed mustache, dark eyes, a sheaf of bangs swept to the side over his forehead. His navy blue blazer and tie said ‘accountant’ or maybe ‘state employee’ and his sideburns were just a little out of date. You pegged him at about 40, probably one of those men who visited the same barber their whole lives, not bothering to keep up with fashion trends as long as they looked neat and clean. When he reached to take his to-go cup of black coffee from you, you noticed that his ring finger was bare, and you liked that his fingernails were clean and trimmed. He offered you a nod in thanks, and you smiled at him a little more warmly than you had with your other customers so far. He held the door on his way out, pausing just a moment to let two women enter… and then he was gone, out into the bright sunlight and foot traffic and morning rush. You hoped you would see him again.
On Wednesday he came back again, a repeat of Tuesday except with a different tie, deep red today instead of navy. Black coffee to go, leather portfolio tucked under one arm, clean hands, eyes as dark as the coffee you handed him. This time rewarding you with a gruff and gravelly, “Thanks,” instead of just a nod. You relished the accidental brush of his fingers on yours as you handed the cup over, another flash of him imprinted on you, along with yesterday’s vision of him going golden as he stepped out into the morning sun. This time you watched him through the big glass window until he was out of sight, admiring his strong nose in profile, the curve of it perched over that mustache. Two extra seconds of handsomeness poured into your morning before you had to turn back to rinsing mugs and making change. You hoped that he’d come again on Thursday, making it three visits, a genuine pattern instead of a fluke.
On Thursday he reappeared, same time as the previous two days, waiting patiently in line behind two wake-and-bake potheads who were taking their sweet time staring up at the food menu. Today he was dark gray instead of navy, wearing a charcoal blazer and a sharp black tie. You waved him over with a smile, letting it melt all the way up to your eyes instead of flashing the tight, brief, closed-mouth thing you used on most customers.
“Black coffee, right?” You watched his face, taking in the dark eyes, the hair, the brief smile that made a surprise dimple appear in his cheek.
He nodded, “That’s right. Thank you.” He slid a rumpled bill across the counter. “Keep the change.”
You bit your lip as you turned away, preening at his thanks and seven whole words as if they were genuine praise. His voice was deep and rich, landing with a rumble in your own chest, like the remnants of thudding bass from a passing car. You poured the coffee and secured the lid, brain scrambling desperately for something clever to say. To make him come back, to talk to you more.
You turned and handed him the cup, and as he reached for it you again let your hand be in just the right spot to feel the brush of his fingers. Your eyes locked on one another, and for the briefest moment you forgot to let go of the cup. You wanted to swim in those brown eyes forever, get lost and let him drown you whole. He paused, and you thought you saw the briefest twitch of his mustache, a pinprick in his calm exterior before you drew your hand back. He inclined his head, a single nod, and then he turned to leave and your attention was swept back to the register and the next customers.
Friday he arrived “on time” and you met his eyes as soon as he opened the door. Today he was warm earth tones, a dark red shirt under a brown tweed blazer and no tie, a nod to casual Friday. You turned and prepared his coffee, tightening the lid and then holding it up to him across the room, smiling and tossing your chin up in a friendly greeting. He walked up and slid a few bills over the counter to you.
“Thanks.” He winked at you and something in your pelvis fluttered. “See you next week.”
You watched him go, stepping out again into a halo of golden sun, pulling a pair of aviator sunglasses from his pocket and putting them on before striding away. You suddenly felt lost, facing the many hours between now and Monday.
Your weekend passed in a blur of extra bartending shifts and catching up on sleep. You were forever napping at odd hours, trying to reconcile the slightly staggered rhythms of early morning coffee shop hours and late-night bartending. It wasn’t the hardest you’d ever worked or the worst schedule, but it wasn’t fun. At least, it hadn’t been fun until now. Now you had something to look forward to.
Monday morning you opened the shop and kept an eye on the clock. At 7:46 you poured black coffee into a to-go cup. Thirty seconds later, he appeared on the other side of the plate glass window, the navy suit and tie again, blowing out a long stream of cigarette smoke before dropping the butt and giving it a quick twist under his foot. He took off his amber-lensed aviators and tucked them into the pocket of his blazer, then pulled out his wallet. At 7:47 on the dot, he opened the door, met your eyes, and saw you holding up his coffee. And there went that smile again, the dimple, the wink.
You smiled as he approached the counter. “You psychic or something? Or am I just that predictable?”
“Both, maybe.” You grinned and wiggled your eyebrows.
He opened his wallet and passed a bill across the counter, larger than what was strictly necessary for a to-go coffee and a reasonable tip. “Great service, keep the change.”
You thanked him, giving him the full-watt smile and wishing him a good day as you opened and closed the register, putting the change into the tip jar. Thankfully there was no one else in line right now, so you could give his handsome figure your full attention as he left, watching how the navy blazer hugged his shoulders.
He went out the door, turned right like he always did, and then he turned his head and his eyes met yours through the glass. You should have felt embarrassed that he caught you staring, but you didn’t. Mostly because you realized that he had stopped to look back, too, which meant you weren’t the only one hoping for more. He nodded and lifted his cup in a gesture of thanks. Then he was gone.
Tuesday was the same, only with the charcoal blazer and the dark red tie this time. The wink, the flutter in your gut, the over-tipping. The glance across the counter as his fingers brushed yours around the cup. The aviators slung on as soon as he stepped out the door.
Wednesday, again, the navy suit and tie, another brush of the fingers, a smaller tip but a bigger smile, gracing you with that dimple again. Another gravelly, “Thank you,” that sounded warmer than he had to date. The handsome profile and a quick meeting of the eyes through the glass as he left again.
Thursday was the same, only better. You used a permanent marker to write something on his paper cup before you poured it precisely at 7:46 a.m., watching, waiting. He did not disappoint. At 7:47, precisely on time, you caught a glimpse of his profile as he came into view through the plate glass window. Charcoal again. He turned and saw you inside, then opened the door, holding it again for a woman exiting. You pointed at his to-go cup on the counter and smiled.
“You trying to get rid of me? In and out so quickly?” He smiled and twitched an eyebrow at you.
You smiled back, “Depends on how long you were planning to stay. We close at 1:00 a.m. after open mic tonight. After that you gotta go somewhere else.”
The handsome man chuckled and pursed his lips. “And what time do you get off, after the morning shift?”
“Depends on who’s asking.” You winked and immediately regretted it, it felt too bold, it wasn’t your normal mode.
He met your eyes and said simply, “I am.”
You felt your face split into a wide smile. “I finish at 1:00, after the lunch rush.”
He nodded. “Good to know. I’m Javier, by the way.” He stuck his hand out and shook yours. You gave him your name and a warm shake of the hand.
He fished a few bills out of his wallet. “Can I maybe stop by after your shift, take you to lunch sometime?”
“You can do me one better than that.” You rotated the paper cup so that the writing was facing him. “My phone number’s on the cup.”
His eyebrows popped up, and then he gave you an appraising glance, like he was impressed. You saw his tongue shift up under his lip to suck a tooth and you suddenly wanted nothing more than to see how that tongue felt on you. You flushed hot, tingling with desire.
He arched an eyebrow at you. “You do that for all your customers?”
“Just the best tippers.” You winked at him and laughed.
He stuck his hand out once more and you gave him yours. He lifted it and kissed the back of your hand, mustache sweeping ever so briefly over your knuckles before he gently released it.
“I’ll see you tomorrow,” his voice was low and something in it went straight to your groin, making your pelvic muscles clench. You watched him pick up the cup and go, smiling at you with that dimple through the glass as he left. You stood for just a moment, hoping, hoping, hoping. Maybe he would call you after work?
At 1:00 you finished your shift and handed the register off to Mike. You were just untying your apron and hanging it up when you saw a familiar profile sweep into view outside the window. Javier. Your stomach flipped over and a million little butterflies flew out.
He ducked inside the door and searched the shop for a moment, smiling when he saw you coming out from behind the counter with your bag slung over your shoulder.
“Hey,” you stood for a moment and hesitated, suddenly shy.
Javier slipped his sunglasses off and tucked them into his pocket. “Hey, I’m glad I caught you. Are you busy, or can I take you to lunch today?”
“No, I’m not busy. I’d love to go.” You smiled. “There’s a sandwich place around the corner, and a park we can go sit in.”
He smiled, wider than you’d seen him do so far. “That’s perfect.”
He let you lead, walking him across the street and around the corner to the sub shop. You made small-talk on the way there, finding out that he was from Laredo but new to Austin, a former DEA agent consulting for the state. You picked up your food and walked a block over to the small city park, where you told him about your roommates, your cat, your wish to go back to school and finish your degree. By the end of lunch you were both smiling, feeling that spark, the little magnetic pull that had started over his coffee orders. At 2:00 Javier said he had to get back to his office.
“... but I’d really like to see you again. Can I take you to dinner? Tonight if that’s okay, since you’re working tomorrow night.” He stood close to you, looking warmly into your eyes.
“Yeah, that would be great.” You felt that flutter again, that twitch of interest from looking into his warm brown eyes, seeing the way they crinkled when he smiled. You were so busy looking at his eyes that you didn’t see him reach his hand out, sweeping it around to circle your shoulders and pull you in for a kiss. You kissed him back, as urgently as was proper for the time of day and the public setting. When he pulled away to walk back up the few blocks to his office, you stood there dazed. Wow.
You went home and napped, then showered and changed into datewear. Javier picked you up at 7:30, and you were relieved that the little spark was still there. You had half-worried that it would wear off in the few hours between your lunch date and now, or that it was a localized feeling limited to a small radius around the coffee shop. But dinner was fun and warm, and by the end of dessert and coffee you didn’t want to leave him yet. You decided that you would be bolder than you normally were.
“Listen, my roommates are home, but do you want to go back to your place?”
Javier looked surprised for only a moment and then smiled, “Yes, let’s go.”
You kissed all the way back to the car, ran your hands lightly over the back of Javier’s neck as he drove, kissed all the way from the car to his apartment door, and tumbled inside together, feeling for buttons and zippers and helping each other out of your clothes. His erection felt warm and solid against your hip, and when he finally got naked you were nearly moaning at the expanse of his broad shoulders and golden skin. He was beautiful.
Javier walked you backwards to the bedroom and paused only to pull a wrapped condom out of a drawer and turn on the bedside lamp to chase away the dark. You lay back and watched him as he tossed the foil packet onto the quilt next to you and then knelt beside your legs. He looked at you as he ran his hands up and down your naked thighs. Then he butterflied your legs slowly apart and ran one warm hand up to your pussy, teasing you with his fingers, dipping them in and out between your labia and running them up to tickle your clit.
“Can I eat you out?” He asked almost shyly.
You nodded, a breathy “Yeah,” issuing from your lips. Javier dove down and licked into you with a rush. You gasped and threw your head back, clawing your fingers down into the blankets. Javier worked you open on three fingers and used the tip of his stiffened tongue to flick your clit rapidly from side to side while his fingers slipped slowly in and out. You moaned and fought the urge to close your legs while he curled and stroked inside of you, finding the spots you could never quite reach yourself. Within a few minutes you were cresting the wave of release.
“Oh God, I’m gonna come! Keep- keep going,” you gasped, “Just like that!” Javier kept his pace steady, working you along as you huffed and breathed faster. He curled his fingers just right and you sped off the edge into oblivion, gulping and grunting and making noises that were almost embarrassing, that didn’t sound like you, but you felt too good to even care. Javier stopped licking and slowed his fingers as you clenched around him, using the broad flat of his tongue to swipe a long, comforting stripe up the outside of your labia. When you were finished coming, he pulled his fingers out slowly and sat up on his haunches, smiling like a prizewinner.
He wiped one broad, flat hand down his mouth and chin, and then crawled up the bed to lay next to you, stroking you from hip to breast with his thick fingers. “Was that okay, cariño?”
You groaned out a chuckle, “Oh yeah, that was good.” You rolled onto your side to face him, and drew him in for a deep kiss. You loved the mix of how he smelled and tasted, your own salty musk blending with his spicy cologne and the smoky phantoms of cigarettes past and his after-dinner coffee. As you kissed, his hand came up to stroke a trail of goosebumps on your shoulder, and you reached yours down to stroke his cock to attention. The heft of him was thick and warm in your hand, and within seconds he was hard and throbbing. You ran the pad of your thumb up the bottom of his head and over his slit gently, and you giggled as he shuddered and reached down to pull your hand away.
“You keep going like that and I’m not going to last long.” His thick fingers wrapped around yours, and he pulled your hand up to place a long kiss to the inside of your wrist, blowing warm air out through his nose, the feel of it on your skin sending a thrill up your spine. He reached for the condom and opened it, rolling it down his proud length. He put his hand down and stroked your thigh before hooking one hand behind your knee to pull your leg up and over his hip. He held himself so that his tip was buried just at your entrance, then he thrust up and into you in one swift motion. You inhaled sharply and hooked your leg tighter around him, letting him set the pace. He nudged your jaw, nosing up into the crook of your neck and kissing you from ear to chin and back again.
His hot words sent chills down your neck and your nipples stiffened into sensitive buds. “Baby, you feel so fucking good, so hot and wet. Fuck, you’re amazing.”
You kissed him and shushed him, then you pressed an open palm to his chest, “Wait. Roll over. I wanna get on top.”
Javier grinned in the dim light of his bedroom, then he wrapped his big hand around your lower back and pulled you over with him. You shifted and settled into place, and the feeling of being speared on him, of his cock hitting deep inside, of his coarse curls rubbing against your clit was almost to the point of overstimulation. You whined and fell face down into the crook of his neck, smelling his warm spiced fragrance and going limp at the ‘too much’ of it all. He planted his feet flat on the bed and kept his arms wrapped around you, thrusting up, up, up into you over and over. He made the most delicious noises, sounds that might have been words or not, but which conveyed all of his pleasure in little grunts and groans.
You decided you wanted to watch his face, so you sat back up and braced yourself on your knees, rolling your hips in rhythm with his and helping him chase his high.
“God, you look so fucking good on my cock, cariño. So beautiful.” He started to turn glossy with sweat, tiny golden beads reflecting the single lamp beside the bed and making him look surreal. You followed a drip of sweat as it appeared on his neck and then ran down to pool in the hollow at the base of his throat. You tipped forward once more to lick at it, to taste the salt and the smoke of him and nip one tiny bite into his neck before moving up to lick and nibble at his earlobe.
Javier suddenly tensed his legs, giving one big thrust and then hissing out a “Fffff-” between his lips as he came. He thrust again and then stilled, relaxing back into the bed, but keeping you close against him. You let him hold you, your breaths slowing together until you were back, calm again, heartbeats back to center. He released you and held the base of the condom as you lifted off and rolled onto your back. He went to the bathroom, and you heard him run water before he returned with a wrung-out washcloth. He offered it to you, and you declined with a weak wave. He turned and tossed it into the bathroom sink and then motioned for you to scoot off the bed so he could turn the covers down.
He picked up a packet of cigarettes and a lighter, gesturing at you with a raised eyebrow. You put a hand up, “Not a whole one, but I’ll take a drag off yours if that’s ok.”
“Sure thing.” He lit one and passed it to you, and you took a deep drag before handing it back.
“Thanks.” You blew the smoke out in a blue stream.
He crawled into bed and patted the mattress next to him. “Stay,” he looked at you with a smile. “If you want to.” He parked the cigarette back between his plush lips.
You smiled warmly and crawled in next to him. “Okay, just for a little while.” You checked the digital clock beside the bed. “I gotta go home and change, and then get to the coffee shop at 5:00. Can you set the alarm for 4:00?”
He nodded and picked up the clock, pressed a few buttons and slid a switch into place. Then he raised his arm and settled it around your shoulders, and turned off the lamp. You watched the cherry of his cigarette glow and then turn faint, bobbing in the dark as he moved to flick ash into the ashtray on the nightstand.
He murmured low, into the quiet room, “You know, I’m only here for the summer. The consulting job ends in August.” He paused to take the final pull of his cigarette, then stubbed it out in the ashtray. “After that, I gotta go back to D.C.”
You yawned and nodded. “No problem. We can have fun this summer. I’ll take you to Barton Springs and Mount Bonnell, give you the real Austin tour. We can just have fun for now.”
He kissed your forehead, moving down your nose to land soft kisses on your lips. “Okay, summer girl. I’m all yours… for now.”
