(this is kind of a rough outline, also not sure if I'll have her in the adult timeline or not yet)

Pre crash:

Grew up in Baltimore and was raised very religious 

Moved to NJ when her dad got a better job offer

Ever since she was little she wanted to be just like her sister Luna

Her sister was a varsity soccer player and Val had a goal set that she would be too

Luna taught Val a lot over the years and while at first she was a bit clumsy and awkward, she did get better

When Val tries out for the high school soccer team she eventually does make varsity

Was a pretty strong believer in God/very active in her faith up until she was 14

Catalyst for her loss of faith was her older sister Luna's suicide

Personality:

Val is friendly, if not a little quiet

Very sweet and empathetic

Was super nerdy and awkward in middle school 

But she grows into herself over the years and gains confidence by the time she reaches high school

Even though she's not really super religious anymore (although often puts on a good Christian girl front for her parents), she still says a quiet prayer for Luna to herself before games

Definitely queer in some capacity but doesn't realize it till way later (after the crash)

Lowkey enamored with Shauna

Although she thinks it's more of a ‘I really admire you and want to be closer to you’ thing

Wilderness:

Not exactly unhelpful, but not exactly helpful either (at first)

She's skittish and easily freaked out

Doesn't really have too many survival skills

She doesn't like to feel useless though 

Very open to learning skills and since she's very determined, she eventually is able to offer more and more help over time

Sensitive and has a hard time swallowing tough situations

Due to her loss of faith in God, she does end up leaning into the wilderness faith with Lottie a bit

She wants something to believe in to help her make sense of things, something she hasn't had for a while now

This also helps her deal with and justify darker actions later on

Connections:

Shauna Shipman: not super close, mostly an awkward puppy around her, but trying desperately to get closer both pre and post crash

Laura Lee: Went to the same church, pretty close friends

Jackie Taylor: kind of jealous of her, doesn't really know why. definitely still likes her though, they're pretty friendly

Lottie Matthews: they aren't really close at all pre crash, they grow a lot closer in the wilderness via faith in the wilderness and also because of Val just finding her comforting/grounding
