in my experience, if someone is asking "are you mad at me" they've already decided I am and no matter what I do it's going to end in a fight.

Human behavior is vast and complicated. If you honestly tell someone you are not mad at them and they do not believe you, you may not be able to convince them otherwise. But usually when people ask this, they are not trying to instigate a fight. Usually when someone asks "are you mad at me?" it is because they are afraid.

When someone becomes hypervigilant about other people's behavior, whether that's due to present stress or past trauma, it's understandable that they would want to remove uncertainty from the conversation. This "are you mad at me" is a way of asking "are we both going to be calm about this?"

Perhaps the asker does want comfort and reassurance and is afraid to ask for that directly (although, yes, stating that need openly is usually more helpful). If you find yourself responding, "no, I'm not mad at you" often, you might consider asking if there are other ways this person in your life could ask for reassurance more directly, or if there's something you could say or do that would remind them that you care.

Or perhaps they aren't usually good at reading body language, or tone over text. "Are you mad at me" is not usually intended as an accusation--the asker may be trying to prevent a miscommunication.

Or perhaps you, the askee, are unintentionally giving off signals that you are irritated or stressed, and the asker is trying to figure out if their behavior is what's causing that so they can change it.

There is no one universal "are you mad at me." But it would be cool if there were and it always resolved tension and improved everyone's mood. That would be nice.

Okay I've calmed down enough to maybe put this into words.

Fourteen's ending was so validating to me as an aroace person, specifically because they chose platonic love. Often, QPRs are treated as a last resort, a poor consolation prize for people who can't have romantic partnerships. But Donna has a husband, and while I firmly believe the Doctor is on the ace spectrum, the Newton conversation implies that Fourteen isn't aroace. Despite the fact that he could be in a romantic relationship, the Doctor chooses a platonic partnership. And Donna gets to have both! What's more, her husband and her best friend get along, they aren't jealous or competing for her attention. It's so rare for media to treat platonic relationships as equally valuable and desirable as romantic/sexual ones, and it gave me so much hope for my future.

about what i said abt the gaps and diffuseness; the way shes all eyes & light & reflection. the focus on hands that dont hold anyone anymore. half of her initial definition in this sequence comes from the tardis and with the first touch she immediately explodes. shes obscured by light, and there must be a word for that thats not an oxymoron but it fits; cloudless climes and starry skies

Based on context, Essek picked up on Dorym, and was telling Dorian to make a move. People keep saying it was Essek making a move, and I'm like, "????? His tone was flat, not flirty, and that man is demisexual. Even assuming a week is enough for him to develop feelings, him and Dorian barely talked during it."

SEE, this makes way more sense to me! I first came across this bit while reading Tumblr posts at 6am in the morning and I assumed it happened at the end of some kind of conversation, not as a one-off remark; then I saw some friends on discord commenting about it in the context of Dorym and assumed "oh, it's something he must have said to Orym about Dorian then, as a warning." So when I actually watched the episode I was VERY puzzled!
