I got a few responses from my last post that people were interested in my experience learning to play/make the Guqin, so I'll add those posts in to my Hanfu posts :D
History The Guqin (古琴)is a very ancient and important instrument in Chinese history. Originally it was simply called "Qin" but later on "Qin" also became used for other instruments such as piano (gangqin/钢琴), violin (xiaotiqin/小提琴), etc. so "Gu" was added to the beginning ("Gu" means historical/very old/ancient).
The earliest form of Guqin comes from the Warring States period about 2500 years ago, although some records indicate the instrument existed even earlier. There is a saying in Chinese, "君子六艺", meaning the six skills all 'gentlemen' must learn under Confucian teachings. This included the Guqin (kind of like how everyone needs to learn English, math, science in school today).

Because of how the Guqin is played, there is a belief that the emotions of the player will affect their playing. In addition, those who are familiar with Guqin can listen to a piece and know the emotional state of the musician. There are many stories surrounding this instrument that has garnered it a lot of cultural and historical value to the Chinese civilization. China chose to put the famous Guqin piece, "Flowing Water"(流水) in the Voyager Golden Record sent to space by NASA in 1977 because of its cultural significance.
Styles + parts The Guqin is a slender instrument. Modern-day Guqin has 7 strings that are plucked to create sound. Above the strings is a set of 13 dots called "hui"(徽), these indicate where the left hand plays.
The instrument is made from 2 pieces of wood, the top portion has a slight upward curve that represents the Heavens (no religions connotation), and the bottom board is flat representing the Earth (historically, people though the Earth was flat). A standard Guqin is 3 "chi/尺" 6.5 "cun/寸" which is approximately 125cm, representing the 365 days of the year (this length can vary, however), and the 13 "hui/徽" represents the 13 months (of the lunar calendar).

There are many styles of Guqin, each with its own unique name. Guqin owners will sometimes name their Guqin and carve it into the bottom. It's also common for owners of famous Guqin to carve a line or two of poetry on the bottom of the Guqin. Currently, the most commonly found and classical style of Guqin is "Zhongni/仲尼" (which was also the courtesy name of Confucius, marking its significance).

Score Traditional Guqin score gave no indication of rhythm or tempo. It was purely a score to indicate finger positions and stroke technique. Students learned the overall rhythm of a piece from their teacher.
The Guqin score takes parts of Chinese characters to indicate which string is to be played, by which hand, using which finger, etc. Because of this, the score is called "jianzipu/减字谱" meaning simplified characters score.

My brain is a giant ball of confusion the first dozen times I play a a section as it tries to figure out all this information and relay it to my fingers xDD
Sound There are 3 types of sounds students learn when playing the Guqin:
1) Sanyin (散音) Only the right hand is used to pluck/flick the string
2) Fanyin (泛音) The right hand plucks/flicks the string while the left hand gently taps the string at the indicated "hui (徽)"
3) Anyin/Zouyin (按音/走音) The right hand plucks/flicks the string while the left hand presses down the string at the indicated "hui". To make the sound smoother, the string is pressed down slightly above/below the hui then slides up/down the string to the indicated hui creating a very unique sound to the Guqin
Guqin's tone tends to be in the lower range, its pieces are generally slow-paced. The instrument is quite soft, historically used for personal enjoyment or played in a small gathering of close friends, and not meant for large performances. The Guqin is often played as a solo instrument, or with the Chinese flute (dizi/笛子), rather than in large orchestras as its soft sound can be easily overpowered. Today, Guqin performances use microphones for amplification.
Guqin vs. Guzheng Many people confuse the Guqin and Guzheng. The two instruments share some similarities but vary greatly in appearance and sound.

Strings: Guqin: 7 Guzheng: 22 strings (usually)
Sound: Guqin: lower octaves (unless playing fanyin), softer, more suitable for solo playing Guzheng: higher octaves, louder, more suitable for large performances
Bridge: Guqin: near the head of the instrument, unmoveable Guzheng: usually placed diagonally mid-instrument, can be moved
In some Chinese period dramas, they will use the Guzheng to dub for Guqin because given it's louder capabilities it's easier to record (but if you're familiar with the two instruments it's easy to tell them apart by ear).
My experience with Guqin I first learned of the Guqin when I was around 8-9 years old, through a Chinese TV series called Romance of the Three Kingdoms (lol, I keep mentioning this series, but I really do love it a lot).

I purchased my first Guqin at the end of 2019, but only managed a few classes before a certain pandemic hit. Because of this, I stopped my classes (my city didn't have any Guqin teachers, I had to drive 3 hrs one way to see her and during lockdown it was just too difficult). I tried to pick it up again a few years later but failed.
Currently, on my trip in China, I came across a Guqin workshop that was offering classes on how to play and make Guqin. The tuition includes room and meals. The workshop is in the rural countryside, no shopping malls, no city chaos, and I thought this was the perfect opportunity to learn Guqin.
I've only been here for about a week but so far the experience has been wonderful. There are only 2 other students besides me (the teacher is only accepting 3 students maximum), we all live here. Upstairs is our living area (the teacher doesn't live here), we get up at 7am, eat breakfast at 8am, practice Guqin, have lunch, then make Guqin in the afternoon. Sometimes the teacher takes us to meet other Guqin teachers/makers in the area. Everyone has dozens of Qin in their residences, we literally go in, pick up and Qin, and start playing.
Yesterday, our teacher took us to a Guqin workshop on a small mountain. I later learned the mountain is actually a tomb of a duke/marquis from the Han Dynasty. I also learned people will actually make Guqin out of coffin lumber (like, grave rob a tomb, break down the coffin, and sell the wood)…so if you want to purchase a Guqin and the shop owner tells you a particular Qin is made from lumber that's a thousand years old…you should think hard about HOW they got lumber that old O.O;; Luckily for me, my teacher refuses to let coffin wood into his workshop, he says it has bad energy.

Shut Up and Drive Part 4
If you didn't see chapter three, it is not your fault, Tumblr has hidden the damn thing and it's been two weeks. I can see it on my dashboard and even through the app, but site wide and on browser, nada! I even looked through it and couldn't find anything mature to shadow ban it. Hopefully you'll be able to see this one and it'll have the link to the third chapter.
This story is almost complete. I just have one or two more chapters to go and it's done. I am so excited for you guys to see the end.
In this we have Eddie in AP history, along with Robin and Steve. Yes, Steve. I am still on my Steve is smart and a history nerd agenda.

Monday morning was rife with speculation on who had called the cops. Eddie chuckled as the racers tried double speak their way out of revealing themselves to their peers.
The only one who wasn’t there come Monday was Steve Harrington. The rumor mill was as much a buzz with his absence as they were with cops breaking up the races.
Eddie had his own theory on who had called the cops. It was either King or Chronos. King for being beat to hell and not being able to race and not wanting to lose. Or Chronos for not wanting to go up against King and lose.
Then he spotted Tommy Hagan.
He looked smug as hell and suddenly Eddie got it. Holy shit, that asshole! He knew Chronos was going to beat King or at least get a hell of a lot closer than Titan would have and didn’t want to be shown up in front of everyone.
Eddie was tempted to go over there and punch Tommy in the face, break a nose, knock out a couple teeth, but he promised Wayne he wouldn’t start any fights, but he was allowed to finish them.
Billy Hargrove caught him staring at Hagan, though. “Hey Munson, take a picture it’ll last longer. Never mind, you’d fwap to the photo.”
“You jealous, Hargrove?” Munson shot back. “You worried I’ll stop jacking off to your picture?”
Billy flexed his arms as if he was going to hit Eddie, but just then a teacher walked by, and Eddie fell in step with them, keeping the teacher between Billy and himself.
The teacher looked over at him and then sighed. “I know what you’re doing Mr. Munson, and I do not appreciate being used as a human shield.”
Eddie grinned down at him. “But Mr. Burton, I am merely on my way to class and we are going the same direction. Besides I am sticking to the edict of avoiding fights with my peers.”
Mr. Burton shook his head. “I thought you had Mrs. Click this period and I am certain she is on the other side of the building.”
“Then are you not heading for your own class, Mr. Burton?” Eddie asked all wide eyed. “I assumed that to be the case when I started walking with you, as your class is right across from hers. You know, both being history teachers and all.”
Mr. Burton turned and looked up at him with a small smile. “I can’t pull the wool over your eyes, you got me. You are going the right direction. I just wanted to see if I could trick ya.”
“Mr. Burton! You tease!” Eddie gasped. “They should take back your teacher of the year award for being so saucy.”
Mr. Burton laughed. “How do you think I got the award in the first place?” He winked at him.
Eddie never had a problem with his history or English classes, so he always got along with the history teachers. Well... most of them. Mrs. Click was a damn fine history teacher, but no one liked her.
“I wish I was in your class this year,” Eddie admitted, ducking his head.
Mr. Burton patted his arm in sympathy. “I know. I also heard she’s flunking you and that’s one of the reasons you’re not graduating.”
Eddie let out a shuddering breath. “I don’t know why I’m forced to take a history class again, anyway. I have enough credits for history. It’s math, science, and PE that I need.”
“I don’t know, Eddie,” Mr. Burton said sadly. “But I’ll see if I can get together with a couple of the other teachers and see you can’t graduate based on your actual credits and not just them having you repeat your senior year ad nauseum.”
“Thanks, Mr. B.,” Eddie replied with a pained grin. “This is me, so I’ll see you around.”
“Bye, Eddie.”
Eddie slumped down in the desk farthest from the front of the room and waited for the rest of the students to file in. Mr. Burton might be ignorant about why Mrs. Click was failing him, but Eddie had no such delusions. He was in her AP class and she was so sure he was cheating instead of, you know, actually knowing the subject.
He watched as the other students filter into the class. It was a strange mish-mash of juniors and seniors and then whatever the fuck he was.
The smartest of the juniors were Robin Buckley and Fred Benson. They definitely deserved to be there. Most of the class were seniors and the greatest dark horse of the class, even more so himself was Steve Harrington and as near as Eddie could figure, he was writing Mrs. Click’s tests.
He was that good. And because he was that good, she let him get get away with murder. He loved to stroll in fifteen minutes late with a bagel that he would eat, making a mess.
That wasn’t even the worst part of the bagel. It was the way he would chipmunk the thing, his cheeks bulging with the large pieces of bagel that he would shove into his mouth. Eddie had to moved directly behind the guy so that he wouldn’t go feral at the sight.
But there would be no bagel porn today because Harrington was home sick. Thank whatever higher power was out there for that.
When Buckley walked in and saw that the seat in front of her was empty she sighed with relief. Most likely for a similar but opposite problem Eddie had. While Steve was Eddie’s crush, he was pretty sure Steve was drawing all the attention away from her crush.
Which even as far as girls went, Tammy Thompson was not on Eddie’s radar at all. Like sometimes he could tilt his head and go, ‘oh yeah, she’s cute’ and not want to bang said girl, but Tammy? He just didn’t get it.
Yes, yes. He knew he was being hypocritical with the Steve crush especially with what he told Jeff just a couple of months ago. But Steve seemed to grow on him.
Not that Steve improved upon closer inspection. Steve was still a smart ass with more sass then sense. But instead of irritating him like it had done in the past...Eddie found it...argh...cute!
He kept that shit to himself though.
He suffered through the class and shambled out the door to his next class, which thankfully was was Mr. Cohen’s class. Science fiction and fantasy writing. Eddie had taken it as an elective to see he could get more English credits.
Mr. Cohen was also the journalism teacher and yearbook supervisor. So he was having the class write poems and shit for the Reflections magazine because there was a distinct lack of interest that year.
Poems were just song lyrics not set to music yet, so Eddie was a having the time of his life.
“The king on his steed
A heart filled with greed
Races to fill some other need
He rushes forward thundering at great speed”
Okay so it wasn’t his best, but he got Mr. Cohen to laugh at all of them rhyming so he counted that as a win.
“All right, class,” Mr. Cohen said after the bell rang. “We going to read a relatively new book in the sci-fi genre called ‘Ender’s Game.’ It came out in January but it took me this long to get it approved for this class. So I want everyone to come up and pick up a copy. On the inside of each book is a number from one to twenty-seven, you will put your name on the signout sheet next to the number of your book. Please do not outline, draw in, or otherwise deface this book, if you do or you lose it, you’ll pay for it, do you understand?”
The class nodded.
They all filed up to the front of the class to grab their book. Eddie hung back until almost everyone else had picked up theirs. He strangely got number eight, but he dutifully put his name to next to the number and shuffled back to his desk.
“All right, everyone,” Mr. Cohen said. “I want everyone to start reading chapter one to yourselves. Then be ready on Wednesday to talk about your thoughts.”
Eddie started reading the book and was immediately drawn into the world, he was pretty sure he finish the book by tonight.
Which meant he would probably reread the thing several times before the class was over. Which was a plus as far as he was concerned.
He was actually disappointed when the bell rang for lunch. He shoved the book into his backpack and made for the lunch room.
Again not having Harrington gaze at, made for dull lunch. Well he would have to make his own entertainment then.
He got up on the lunch table and starting a rant about how unless the kid enjoyed it and wanted to do something with math or science, students shouldn’t have take them past the basic level. He was never going need to know the golden ratio or e=mc2 or whatever working for the factory down or as a mechanic.
Just as the principal came rushing in Eddie leapt off the table and neatly on his feet.
“Hi!” he said brightly.
“How many times do I have to tell you not to climb up on the furniture of this school,” Principal Higgins snarled. “Just because you were raised in a barn does mean you get you get treat other people’s property like you’re an animal.”
“Ahh...” Eddie said with the tilt of his head. “I wouldn’t go around talking about my mom that way if I were you. It’s not her fault she got cancer and passed away.”
Principal Higgins looked like he had swallowed a very sour lemon. “Just don’t do it again, do you hear me, Munson?”
Eddie just grinned at him, hands on his hips, staring him down. Eddie cocked his eyebrows and tilted his head, daring the principal to put him in detention, suspend him, or out and out expel him.
Principal Higgins did none of those things. He turned on his heel and stormed off, snarling something at one of the lunch ladies as he passed.
“Well that wasn’t very friendly,” Eddie told the assembled students. “Lunch ladies are sacrosanct, everyone knows that.”
He walked up to the offended lady in question and offered to buy her a Coke, one which she gratefully accepted.
He went back to his table and Jeff glared at him. “You do know you only need two years of both math and science, right?”
“And what good is algebra or geometry going do me working at Thacher’s Tires?” Eddie growled back. “All I need is to know fractions and weights and measurements. I don’t need to find pi or know the circumference of a circle to change a fucking tire.”
“No, but you need to know the radius of the tire to make sure you don’t put the wrong one on,” Jeff said cocking his head to the side.
Eddie blinked at him for a moment. “Well, shit.”
“Hey, leave him alone,” Brian bit out. “He just found out that it was those two classes that held him back. Again. They’re not for everyone. And yeah some basic geometry is required for life, but pass me on needing to know what a fucking cosign is for working at Bradley’s Big Buy.”
Jeff’s jaw dropped. “Oh. Damn, man. I’m sorry, I didn’t know.”
Eddie picked at his pretzels and kicked the leg of their table. “It is what it is.”
“Still,” Jeff said with a heavy sigh. “I shouldn’t have yelled at you like that. I know it’s tough for you.”
“It’s okay,” he mumbled and went back to mindlessly chewing on his sandwich.
It didn’t even have mustard on it. It wasn’t like he forgot, it was that they couldn’t afford to get to the store. All the money he made over the weekend went to buying tires for Wayne’s truck. They were starting to get more bald then the owner of the truck and that was dangerous.
Which meant no mustard for his bologna sandwich.
He jumped when something landed square in the middle of his lunch box. He picked it up and it was one of those mustard packets you get at ballparks and the State Fair. He looked up to see Jeff looking at him.
“The deli my mom gets her pre-made sandwiches from,” Jeff said, “comes with little packets of mayo and mustard and since I don’t like mustard I figured you could use the extra.”
Eddie swallowed around the lump in his throat. It was as good as an apology as any. “Thanks, man.”
He ripped open the packet with his teeth and smeared it all over one side of his sandwich. He took another bite and moaned happily, mustard catching on the edge of his mouth.
“Gross,” Jeff said shaking his head and throwing napkins at Eddie’s face, one of them managing to stick to the glob of mustard.
Eddie cackled, wiping off his face. “Mustard is the seed of life, dude. You are seriously missing out.”
“Seed of life or not,” Jeff huffed, “that stuff is nasty. I can smell it from here.”
Brian shrugged his shoulders. “Mustard isn’t that bad. I like it in my mom’s meatloaf and in my potato salads.”
“But that’s mixed with other things to mask it’s vile nature,” Jeff insisted. “Anywhere else and you’re beggin’ the devil’s pardon.”
Eddie sat back with a smile on his face, already feeling a little better than when he started his lunch.
The lunch bell rang and he packed up his stuff, listening his friends talk among themselves, thinking today hadn’t be a complete bust.
As he made his way to his last class he over heard a couple of rich kids talking about some big party that was happening that weekend because their parents were going to be in Indy for the weekend.
Eddie slowed down as he took in the details. Things were definitely looking up.

ETA: Mr. Burton is a real person, or was I'm pretty sure he's passed considering he was my dad's teacher mentor when he did his student teaching. My 8th history teacher and he was exactly like this. He would start each class with a joke and it would always be terrible. And yes, he even got teacher of the year for his sass.

Now the gym? THATS where the real edukashun is, bro. U lern how 2 get jakked, how 2 bench, n how 2 look sick in a tank top. Nobody at skool cares bout ur pecs, but in the gym? Bro EVERYONE cares. U walk in swole n ppl just RESPEKT u.
Sports is even better, bro. U dont need no dumb english class to lern teamwork. U just grab a ball n dunk on some nerd n BAM lesson lerned. Science dont teach u how to win games, bro. My coach taught me how to crush fools n thats all I need.
Like, wat am I supposed to do wit a book?? U cant curl it. U cant squat it. Its useliss. But a barbell? Bro, dats the key to life. Gym math is ez too. 45 + 45 = gains. THATS the kinda math I care bout.
So yea bro, skool is dum. Go to the gym. Lift heavy. Flex often. And if a nerd says “but education is important” just flex in their face n say “this bicep got all the ansers I need.” PEACE OUT BRO. STAY SWOLE.

this year, i've sectioned it out into quarters; the first, second, third, and fourth, for each three months. rather than going all in with the goals and ambitions for this year to just spread them out randomly through the year, or worse, be constantly forgetting to update them every month, something i am VERY guilty of, splitting it into manageable yet productive sections! i'd recommend this to anyone with consistency issues; it's never too late to start! ♡

though this was SO stressful, it was a learning curve and gave me some really helpful insight actually into how female friendships (and malicious liars) can work. i'm grateful for the memories and the experiences she taught me, but i NEVER wanna see this girl again 😭 i love my real friends who stick by me no matter what u guys are the real ones (you know who you are.)

i was actually aiming to get 60% on this test!!!! i got exactly 50% last time and i'm not the best at these exams, so i'm still super proud of myself and am aiming for somewhere near 70% for phase 3 ♡
♡ placed highest in my class (again!) for term 3 english assessment ♡
♡ scored 37/50 on biology exam
♡ scored 38/50 on chemistry exam
♡ scored 45/50 on physics exam ♡
♡ got some of the highest science grades in my class! ♡
for the 3 tests altogether, i got 120/150, which is 80% in total! i was so shocked when i calculated it all, considering on the phase 1 exams i got 78/150, so 52% in total. i wasn't expecting such a huge improvement, but i studied hard, and it paid off! (would you guys like to see a post on what i did??? ♡)

consistency and discipline is something i've always struggled with because i can never seem to find a healthy enough balance for either of them . i want to focus on this throughout all of the second quarter, but specifically lay out some routines in april.

DAMIAN WAYNE SCHOOL HEADCANONS because school opened like 2-3 weeks ago and i need to cope
•since he is 15 years old, he is in 10th grade(not letting dc pull a tim drake and make him the same age forever)
•he used to love chemistry in the 9th grade because the first subject was alchemy if i remember correctly(dc can pry the "al ghuls are alchemists" hc(canon) from my cold dead hands)
but he lost interest in chemistry quickly after the subject passed.
•his all time favourite classes are math and art. im just sure damian's type of person that doesnt separate math and art from eachother
•why art is his favourite is a given but his favourite is math because math is a class based on problem solving(and also because he can do math easily)
but yeah ik his classmates are very very annoyed whenever he says "math is easy"
•I imagine him arguing with his english teacher the most for some reason. there is no reason other than damian is a very educated kid about the english literature(literature in general) so either he doesnt care or he correct his teacher on literally everything.
•i feel like he would either do a very detail research about the book he read and write a very long essay, or make a very short one and not enough detailed. no in between(because he misunderstood his teachers when they said to "keep it short")
•he begged his father to let him take an exam that lets him skil grades based on his level but his father refused so now he takes advanced math etc.
•him and duke see eachother in the morning regularly(insomniac duke, and damian who wakes up at 5.30 is real) and they sit down to talk about random shit till 7 am mostly(duke explained him the fnaf lore and damian talked about creepypastas real)
•he texts with maps both on their way to their separate schools and make plans to meetup after school to just hang out
•damian usually reads or draws in most of the classes since he already knows everything they are teaching but when asked a question, he does yap a lot(dc should bring back yapper damian ngl)
•bathroom breakdowns were very real for 9th grade damian(literally canon event for everyone with social anxiety or people who get overstimulated at school)
•still bullied just doesnt care about it and insults them/messes with them back to get back at the bullies(it stops after him also messing with them)
•he loves playing football and volleyball but not with his teammates(ik hes #3 frat boy hater i just feel it) so he only gets along with 2 of his teammates. i imagine their personality as scott and stiles from teen wolf so yeah
•has one(1) friend and two(2) teammates he doesnt hate in total(girlfailure and girlsuccess damian youre real to me🙌😼)
also he got multiple friends outside of school anyways lmao bro is anything BUT anti-social(to me hes also the type to join his schools projects etc or debate teams)
•he always calls his mother when he makes it to school and whenever hes leaving it because talia worries and he wants ease her worries(ultimate mother daughter duo)
•after school he has a yap session with nika and they talk about everything that happened to them that day(yapper4yapper gravebird my beloved)
•him and stephanie rant about school daily and talk about how much they hate it(but they both wont drop out since steph wants that med school degree and damian also wants it in the future(med student sisterisms real))
•jon may be going to a journalism school(i think??) but hes still a science nerd so their study sessions always turns into an argument about an equation or a science problem

I worry that when I describe this idiocy as "fraud," people think I'm exaggerating, being hyperbolic or otherwise overstating it.

But when it's decoded into simple English, à la the Tweet summaries above, the retarded, moronic nature becomes obvious.
The response to this kind of ridiculous shit needs to be laughter and derision, not tenure or a tertiary qualification.

Meta Details:
I was initially unsure what course/subject Ms. Maddox was teaching in the OG trilogy, since I don't think it's ever explicitly confirmed. The background used is clearly for an English/Writing classroom (albeit it is technically a very stock background, but still), but there's also a later scene where Evie accidentally takes Brian's Math textbook during homeroom. But Ms. Maddox also gave me History teacher vibes at first for some reason.
The English classroom background won in the end, especially since Evie would be taking Algebra Honors while Brian would definitely think that that's for "nerds". I figure Evie accidentally taking Brian's Math textbook is something that could still happen in an English class.
In Book 2, it's confirmed that Gym is MC's last class of the day.
In Book 3, when MC and friends hang out with some Hearst kids at lunch, it's mentioned that both Emma and Cameron take a Creative Writing course. Evie loves Creative Writing too for sure, so there was no way I was passing up that opportunity.
As I'll mention in the next section, one of the books Evie reads in English 10 is Julius Caesar. I picked all of those books because they were what I read in my English 10 class, but Julius Caesar is also fitting considering the Book 2 conflict with Isa taking over, which I think would be happening a few months after the Julius Caesar unit. Evie, being freshly familiar with the play and also being a huge Mean Girls fan, will absolutely make a lot of "We should totally just stab Isa!" jokes to herself in Book 2.
All teachers' names besides Diana Maddox and Ricky Burke are of course made up rather than from the story. Same with all the room numbers besides 225B.
A moment I may include in the first chapter of the Adaptation Fic is, when Evie is in her Gym class, Coach Burke reveals that in 5th period Julian told him about the race that they did with Caleb and Brian at lunch (as per the jock minigame in canon) and Evie's performance in it, and thus he encourages her to try out for the team.
Headcanons:
Evie is quite good at Math and Science subjects. They're usually her favorite subjects, and I say usually because thanks to Creative Writing, Math and Science hold the second place spot this year. Scott is a mechanical engineer, so he was able to give Evie a bit of a jump-start in those subjects. He of course never pushed Evie to pursue those kinds of fields, and Evie does genuinely enjoy Math and Science as a result of how he taught her. Especially Science, it's cool to see how things work.
History is probably Evie's least favorite subject genre. The topics are very hit-or-miss, and a lot of the time it can feels like it's just learning a bunch of facts, unlike in Math and Science where there was also a sense of *how* things worked. So unless those facts are about interesting things... it can be kind of a drag for her. Berry's History classes, however, would try to put more of an emphasis on analyzing the history facts and timelines rather than just memorizing a bunch of facts-- which Evie would still struggle with, but would ultimately feel more engaged by.
Evie is neutral to English, probably. She loves reading, but the actual books themselves can be hit-or-miss for her. And even when they are hits, it can sometimes be difficult for her to keep up with assigned reading. Literary/textual analysis is also an area that is new to her when she starts high school, but in 10th grade she starts to become increasingly more proficient at it.
The books Evie will read in English 10 at Berry are: Sophocles's Oedipus Rex, Shakespeare's Julius Caesar, Elie Weisel's Night, Alexander Solzhenitsyn's One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich, and Khaled Hosseini's A Thousand Splendid Suns. None of them become major favorites of hers (except maybe TSS), but she does consider them all well-done for what they are, as well as important to her for kicking off her skill in textual analysis.
Evie enjoys stuff like mile runs and warm-up runs in Phys-Ed, but at the same time she takes running very seriously and so she tends to get a bit more nervous about them than she probably needs to. Ever since 9th grade, she'd always be keeping track of her times and trying to improve on them.
The units Evie has in Phys-Ed this year are: Tennis, Soccer, Volleyball, Flag Football, Badminton, Basketball, Softball, Field/Street Hockey, Swimming, and Track. Evie of course excels at Flag Football, Basketball, Field/Street Hockey, and Track. She's pretty good at Softball and it helps kick off her interest in joining the Baseball team later in the spring. Badminton is fun but frustrating. Soccer is decent. She could be better at Volleyball. She has a lot of trouble with Swimming.
Creative Writing is one of Evie's favorites of all time. She's loved writing, coming up with her own stories and characters, playing imaginary games, playing dolls, etc. ever since she was a little kid. There was this one time in second grade where she was allowed to join a middle school level Creative Writing course, and it was great until the very kind teacher retired a month later and the school ended up dropping the course entirely. Evie was an uncontrollable sobbing mess that entire night.

Whoever wrote that percy jackson au of the dead boy detectives, you live under my skin and I love you. So much so that my brain tried to think of a way to make it even more canon-accurate without making them dead. or reborn Hazel Levesque style.
What I have so far is playing on the whole West civilization bit and how it moved to the.. well west - but also that World War 2 was a big three kid conflict? So. I have sort of a time-table and I'm throwing it out of the window.
Edwin is a child of Athena - that much stays the same - who is very bookish and very studious but not in the way the rest of his siblings are. They are handy and crafty, strategic and interested in architecture or design. He.. is not. (I need a reason why his siblings didn't come to help him when the "death scene" happens.)
The whole boarding school is one of many spread across the London countryside - Chiron moves a lot. They teach both ancient and modern warfare because magic or not you can't escape the bloodshed forever - you either get drafted or you run and get blacklisted somewhere or another.
(St Hilarion was actually a son of Apollo that got really popular during the Crusades - Zeus didn't smite the school when it was established because times are different and Hera would be angry if there was another big fire with no explanation that put their soldiers'- eh-hem- kids' lives at risk.)
They still teach Latin alongside Greek because it was what all normal boarding schools did and that's what they were. Maths, English, and Sciences - were all taught to the boys. The girls went to another school - where they were taught the bare minimum to survive. Because sexism was rampant and if the Romans were on the wrong side of the civil war, that means no matter how progressive the gods could have been in certain areas, they aren't now/then–
Artemis really, really hated that time period. Zoë or this version of Zoë got a kick out of shooting so many assholes in the face. Or in their dicks. They also got way more recruits than in later years. Silver lining.
Anyways: Simon - son of Hecate - and the bunch of boys, one of which was a son of Hades, do the whole let's sacrifice Edwin. Only the book is a Christian book on witchcraft that Simon truly didn't think would work. He and the rest - Hades boy included - did the whole preparation of the sacrifice as it was absolutely terrifying for Edwin to experience on top of everything else. They didn't know it was a real thing - but is the only reason why Edwin stays alive.
It's essentially a stasis charm that lets the ritual run for as long as needed without the poor victim dying beforehand. It requires bloodletting and "runes" and such. The thing is scary, traumatizing stuff so it seemed like a fun thing for Simon and his buddies to do. So they did it.
They skimmed the reading. Blood with power is spilled, ritual that is very real gets haphazardly done and so monsters get involved.
Fun fact, that I'm really hoping is actually true - sometimes monsters with names similar to other religions' occult beings pick up the summoning calls. If the ritual is shoddy enough for them to hear, the participants all die either way, it's only important who gets there first.
So. The bullies get killed and a fury-type thing drags Edwin's whole being to the fields of punishment so it can feast on its offering. He gets dusted Sally Jackson style.

A Primer on Dyscalculia: The Learning Disorder You Weren't Told About in School
I rarely see people discussing this learning disability, to the point that many believe it doesn't exist (ie, saying math is the universal language and everyone understands it but just doesn't try) so I thought I'd explain a bit about what it is.
Dyscalculia is a learning disability characterized by difficulty with math, numbers, and some systematic learning that requires the use of memorization and application. Like its relative, dyslexia, it is not that someone is "stupid" or "not trying hard enough" to learn math; our brains are essentially wired not to absorb information in this form.
Common symptoms of dyscalculia include:
Inability to do basic math problems
Struggling to count, often using their fingers to count
Difficulty using multiplication and division
Challenges with visualizing heights, lengths, and widths
Difficulty counting change
Struggling to read a clock or divide time into reasonable measurements
Challenges with memorizing numbers, dates, and sequences
No one is actually sure how many people have dyscalculia because it is rarely diagnosed. Right now, estimates are around 3% to 7% of the population, but this is likely a vast underrepresentation.
Educators still believe the myth that everyone can do math and that those who say they can't are just refusing to apply themselves. This causes lifelong problems for dyscalculiacs because if not treated early enough, it is nigh-on untreatable.
Many people with dyscalculia may complete math problems in unusual and time consuming ways. For example, if you asked me to divide 145 by 5 without a calculator, this is how my brain would have to do it:
100 by 5 (20)
20 by 5 (4), then multiply this by 2 (8), then divide 5 by 5 (1)
And finally, add up all the results (20+8+1) to get 29.
Numbers that are not easily divisible or "chunked" like this would be nigh-on impossible for me to do in my head. I wasn't able to memorize the times tables and in fact needed a laminated times table well into elementary school (think 5th grade).
I distinctly remember feeling like everyone else was on the helm of the USS Enterprise when they could so easily shout out answers to simple multiplication or division problems, and I was always the last person to do those stupid times table sheets. Sometimes I couldn't even complete half of it by the time everyone else was done.
I failed 3rd grade math class and had to be assigned a tutor. This was despite getting all As in every single other class. In fact, I failed multiple math classes during my academic career.
Since my grades were so high in other classes, I had to petition to be put in a remedial math class. Everyone assumed that because I did well in things like English, science, civics, and so on, I must have been able to do what my peers could.
A college-level physics class was the hardest class I have ever done in my life, and I have a Master's degree in International Relations, which requires a lot of very dry and complicated political theory. That is the A I am most proud of because it required far more effort than anything before or since.
No one told me what dyscalculia was or identified a problem throughout my entire time in education. I had to seek out resources myself in adulthood before finally learning what my problem was. This, of course, led to significant "math fear" and self-esteem issues, especially in a society that is obsessed with STEM.
This learning disability can have far-reaching effects and impact things that other people may not even consider. There are many connections between systematized learning and math.
Dyscalculiacs may also have trouble with:
Learning languages
Playing musical instruments (because sheet music and tempos are a form of language + math, though it is possible to learn by ear)
Reading maps, including general world geography
Estimating distances
Navigating a new place because they can't make "mental maps"
Dancing (due to the sequencing)
Reading diagrams
Remembering step-by-step instructions without a cheat sheet
Completing complex tasks that have a lot of steps
Starting a project that necessitates doing things in a certain order, such as building something
Cooking or baking (because it requires measuring and matching measurements to specific ingredients)
Repeating sequences, like a phone number
Remembering numbered streets or highways (like I-480, 5th street, or etc)
Playing games that require counting or keeping score, like Yahtzee, card games, and so on
Completing spreadsheets with numbers
Of course, not every dyscalculiac will struggle with all of these things because there are different degrees of severity. Many also learn tactics to compensate. For example, I never learned sheet music but did well in choir because I memorized all the songs entirely by ear.
I have developed visualizations of common routes I travel and can navigate to them by remembering the landmarks I pass. If you tried to ask me specific step-by-step directions of anywhere, I couldn't tell you, but I can tell you that you'll pass a KFC on your right if you're going east (parallel to Lake Erie), and then you will turn left at the big shopping center.
There are plenty of adaptations that everyday people use which are lifelines to dyscalculiacs in ways that other people may never recognize. Formulas on spreadsheets, conversion websites, built-in calculators, and turn-by-turn navigation apps are all examples of accommodations that appeal to everyone but are especially important to dyscalculiacs.
So, the next time you scoff and say "everyone can do math, they're just being lazy" or "cooking is easy" or "anyone can learn a second language if they want to" or "using a calculator is cheating" and so on:
Recognize that you are ignoring a very real learning disability. These statements are ableist.
Such rhetoric is equally damaging as anti-dyslexic statements like "everyone can learn to read," "open dyslexic fonts are ugly," "audiobooks are cheating," "video lessons are lazy" and things of that ilk.
Ableism takes many forms, many of which people refuse to recognize. Difficulty with math is a widespread problem, and it often has nothing to do with trying hard enough or refusing to learn. I remember breaking down in tears trying to do my times table; I would spend hours trying to understand them.
These issues are NOT a lack of willpower or application. They have to do with real neurological deficits. Please be kind to those who can't do math, and stop assuming we're lazy.

SVU Stabler kids’ schools
For fic purposes, I was trying to find out where some of the Stabler kids go to school.
In Season 1, we can assume Maureen goes to school that doesn’t have a uniform, and that is probably not single sex as she goes to the Homecoming dance in Wanderlust with a boy and see her dad drop her off towards the end of Sophomore Jinx and nobody seems to be wearing anything remotely similar to Maureen’s black top and white jeans.
In Season 6, Elliot goes to talk to Kathleen outside her high school, which is named as Glen Oaks High School. The exterior looks completely different to where Elliot dropped Maureen off in Season 1, and I think there are only girls around, so it could be single sex. There doesn’t seem to be any sort of uniform though, as all Kathleen’s friends are wearing wildly different outfits. 
In Season 3, Kathleen is shown to be struggling with several subjects so maybe Elliot and Kathy deemed a smaller school with fewer distractions might be better ( if there aren’t any boys that will minimise the boy drama) but Elliot mentions Kathleen’s former boyfriend, so I really don’t know, it could be the same school as Maureen’s.
In Season 11, Turmoil, we find out that Dickie goes to Cardinal Catholic Prep School, which has a pretty strict/smart uniform ( shirt, tie and blazer), and seems to be single sex as when the SVU squad come to interview Dickie’s classmates, we only see boys there. 
We know that Dickie got into a fight in Season 8, which would be middle school age. So maybe Elliot and Kathy thought he’d be happier/do better in a smaller school with more support and he’d have some more male friends/guy time as he seems to take Kathy and Elliot’s split very hard and seemingly only lives with his mum, sisters and grandma during their separation and doesn’t see his dad as much as he would like to. 
My head canon is that Lizzie goes to a performing arts school and they put on regular shows ( in Season 10 or 11, Elliot ends up going to one of them and mentions she was in Anne Frank before that). 
And Eli, when they are in Rome, goes to an International School where he has classes in English with other native English speakers and history, geography, science, maths etc are all in Italian, though the American section do focus on US history, geography and literature too, of course. 
When Eli returns to New York, he is several years ahead of his peers so is in all AP classes or joins the older students for their lessons and graduates early, at 16/17, to help with the wonky timeline as he is supposed to be at most 14 when Kathy dies ( and it’s probably closer to 13, really), if my maths is correct. Each Season is 6 months to a year long, with maybe a few “X months later” jumps, He left in Season 12, aged (nearly?)  3, came back in Season 22, so that’s 10 years give or take, plus let’s say 2 time jumps of 6 months each makes him 14. And by Season 3 he is already in college, which would make him 17-ish!

i have a growing aversion to cold drinks lol it's starting to feel odd drinking something that isn't hot... that's not that weird though, i think i'm just becoming a grandma LOL
5. hobbies
photoshop!! i like making gifs and edits and such :) i've also been writing a lot more recently which is crazy, i haven't felt this inspired or productive in forever :'D thank you DA lol 🩷
i am also v much a webtoon enjoyer (my all-time fave is "trash belongs in the trash can!" but i'm currently v invested in "nevermore," "i'm the queen in this life," "sisters at war," and "momfluencer"!), but i'll read manga (tatsuki fujimoto my GOAT) and comics (invincible also my GOAT)
6. if you work, what's your profession?
i write internal software documentation which means it's architectural, high-level design stuff... not so much code-specific, but the reasoning behind why software components are organized the way they are. it's not very fun, mostly mind-melting... i work closely w engineers and it's kind of a toss-up whether they'll be nice/patient or think i'm stupid lol
but my brain now contains so many company secrets :^) if you ever have any questions about data storage/virtualization i can possibly help lol
7. if you could have any job you wish, what would you have?
funny story—i applied for grad school, and i've been accepted to an english m.a. program that starts this fall!!! 🥹 we'll see where i go w that, but i'll likely enter education!

uhh i suppose BG3 LOL i beat honor mode twice! 🎉 (i'm still trying to figure out how DA works 🤔 DA2 hard mode is chill idk if i'd ever do nightmare tho 😬)

ok it's not rly a "hate" thing but it does irk me when i see fandom claims/arguments that don't cite specific quotes/screenshots/instances lol (the english major in me activates and i am consumed by the thought "🚨‼️ where do you see this in the text 👁️👁️🫵" LOL)

the grief 😂🖐️ it creeps up on me! almost cried in my cubicle multiple times this week. haha.

receiving is probably words of affirmation? giving is probably gifts, i like making silly things for my bestie (eg. fenris keychain lol) and finding weird stickers for my brother 🤡

apparently very friendly, outgoing, and extroverted! i would just run up to my fellow kids and yap at them?! i do nooot do that anymore lol

english/literature!!

oh man, i was so bad at science, especially biology/chemistry... i could scrape by in physics bc i was decent at math, but it was still awful...
16. what's your best/worst character trait?
worst...??? according to my last annual review, i need to be more confident in the workplace LOL 💀 + sometimes i let my anxiety get the better of me... i think that's just a lifelong struggle thing though, but i know i can improve to be a better friend and such 💪
best... multiple reviews from mom-aged women say that i am a "nice" and "sweet" person so hopefully at least that means i can leave a good first impression haha
17. if you could change any detail of your life right now, what would it be?
i'm not a huge fan of what-if-ing personally, but i do wish i were on vacation 😆
18. if you could travel in time, who would you like to meet?
i'm currently very curious about my paternal grandparents... it's hard for me to conceptualize why they got married... and how my dad grew up... i guess i would want to witness some of that??

New Friends
Denim is getting along really well at school. He's enjoying making new friends, while Drew is really just going through the motions. At recess one day, she spots a kid sitting along on a park bench and goes over to sit with him.

Drew: *sighs* Me too. I'm Drew.

*mystery kid*: I'm Jaxon but everyone calls me Jax. Drew: *smiles* Nice to mee you Jax. Are you new here? Jaxon: Y-yeah. My parents moved us here last week. My parents are doctors. Drew: That's cool. My mom is a model and my dad works in tech.

Jaxon: I just get really nervous meeting new people. Sorry. Drew: No, it's okay. You don't have to apologize. You can express yourself. I will listen. Jaxon: Thanks. I haven't really even spoken to anyone. Drew: You're speaking to me now. We're friends now!

Drew yanks Jaxon up by the hand and leads him around the huge playground at their school.

Jaxon: So what do you do outside of school? Drew: I like to draw and paint... OH! and cheer! I'm on the middle school cheer team. Do you play any sports? Jaxon: *nods eagerly* BASKETBALL!
Drew smiles when she notices the gleam in his eye.
Jaxon: I want to try out for the middle school team.

Drew: That would be cool! I would be cheering at all your games. Jaxon: Good, that means I would have a friend in the stands. Drew: You should talk to Coach Michaels about trying out. I could ask my brother when they are, he plays too. That would help you making more friends.

Drew snatches his hand and they race toward the swing.

As the day goes on, Drew and Jaxon become really close friends. They have a great time at recess and then after school, they meet at dismissal and Drew spots Jaxon easily.

Drew: How was your day? Jaxon: It went really good. I met your twin, Denim. He's uh... Drew: *whispers* A little shit.
They share a giggle as they walk out to the front of the school. A car horn honks and Jaxon smiles.

Drew: See you tomorrow, pal! Jaxon: Bye Drew.
Drew runs to her bike and climbs on.
Jaxon: You bike to school? Drew: Yes! I live close by. My older brother, Dallas follows me. He's my best friend. But you can be my best friend too! Jaxon: Okay! Bye Drew. Drew: *grins* BYE!!!!

Dropout Customization
Due to some questions about MC customization, I have decided to compile all the physical and personality aspects that are selectable about the Dropout.
A reminder that this is all subject to change and that new things may be added (or deleted). Feedback and ideas to further develop MC are encouraged.

Main Ideas
Name Surname Nickname
Sex, Gender, Pronouns (it's possible to customise them), Breast/Pecs, Penis/Vagina (If MC is transgender, their transition takes place while they're away) Title (Ms. / Mr. / Mx.)
Virginity or lack thereof.
If MC is trans (when they realized about it [high school, middle school, college] and if they told their family // the ROs already know, as MC told Uma and J, and word spread).
Birthday which establishes the Dropout's age as either 21 or 22 depending on the season (Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter)
Major (Engineering, Biology, Chemistry, Computer science, Law, Economics, Education (in relation to science/maths/etc), Mathematics, Physics, Psychology). The Dropout's Major affects flavor text. These options are the ones approved by the Dropout's parents, though it's possible for MC to express interest in other degrees/topics (music, art, English, anthropology, archeology, classical studies, history).
Reason behind dropping out (MC got kicked out (they were caught cheating) MC didn't get a high enough GPA and dropped out / MC never even wanted to go to college and ultimately decided they wanted out / MC didn't fit in (they were discriminated, lonely, etc) though they really liked college / MC originally liked their degree and college but gradually lost interest in the entire thing / MC never liked their degree and decided to drop out / Something specifically related to mental health (mainly anxiety) / Impostor's syndrome.) This affects flavor text.
2 Coping Mechanisms (Alcohol, Tobacco, Drugs, Sleeping around, Avoidance, Overspending, Humor, *Hobby (overworking self) [Anger, Fake/forced happiness, Sadness, Indifference].) Each coping mechanism opens a variable and a storyline. You can choose two, though choosing one related to emotional responses [between brackets] automatically blocks out the others.
2 Hobbies (Singing, playing an instrument, songwriting, creative writing, drawing, sketching, sculpting, acting, photography, soccer, football, swimming, basketball, gymnastics, boxing, judo, karate, taekwondo, kickboxing, going to the gym, cooking/baking, dancing [ballet, contemporary dance, modern], yoga.) This affects flavor text and scenes.
Job (Bartender [Wanda, Statler is also around often], Cashier [Statler], Columnist [J (+Kai if poly)], Caregiver [Kai], Waiter/Waitress [Uma (+Travis if poly)], Tutor [Travis]) Each job gives you more time with a certain RO, as well as unlocking a storyline.
