Saren had been replaced by a body-snatcher.
Had to be, because whoever was spinning Jane around and around and fussing over the fit of her clothes was not the mighty scourge of the Terminus Systems, the thing that went bump in the night for the things that went bump in the night, the Spectre that she’d met and nearly been shot by on Eden Prime. She’d been handed off to some other white-plated turian with zygomatic spines and the personality of a hornet’s nest.
“What is the point of pockets you can’t use?” Saren seethed as he sorted through yet another rack of clothes. “Or trousers that limit your range of motion?”
Jane pressed her cheek to the fitting room wall, willing the cool metal to keep her drug crash at bay, and checked her chrono. Two hours. They’d been at this for two. Fucking. Hours.

i have a question about the development of the game!
most environments in the game operate on a two-frame animation where it's the same drawing twice but with tiny line deviations; just a subtle art style choice to make the game a bit more lively.
a lot of games and other such things do this, and it certainly adds a lot of life to the frame, but it seems like an incredible amount of work to have to draw every single thing twice instead of once, even if one is just traced over the other - especially with environments with so many intricate details like in slay the princess.
did you use any tricks or programs to make this process faster? or did you just have to draw every single background twice?
Lol. So I actually asked Abby if she could draw 3 versions of every asset when we started on the very first demo, after which she promptly died to avoid taking on that much work. When that was clearly a no-go, I switched to creating a boil effect out of localized distortions in After Effects, and then applied that to each image, creating a short, looping video file. This was *terrible* from a performance perspective, especially with the degree of layering in Slay the Princess — to maintain the parallax effect, many backgrounds have as many as 4 different layers, which all have to be saved as their own images, on top of the Princess when she's present. Playing that many HD video files is very CPU intensive, and the first demo ran terribly because of it. Ultimately we switched to using an openGL shader (which we hired @manuelamalasanya to code — she is so so talented) that mimics the transform I built in After Effects, and we apply that shader to each image within Ren'py. This works better with the engine in general, and it also means the extra work on displaying that effect is done on the GPU instead of the CPU, so the game's more performant.

Eilistraee sanctuary in the Underdark
I wanted to animate a little, and try some parallax using After Effects to enhance this drawing. It is of a forgotten sanctuary of Eilistraee hidden deep in the underdark that my players stumbled upon.

Hal used to be a huge Star Wars fan. One of his earliest memories was watching A New Hope with his dad and holding his breath as Luke flew through the trench to blow up the Death Star. Of course, the starfighters and space dogfights were his favorite parts, but he enjoyed the melodrama of the Skywalker family too. And after Martin's death, Hal could relate to Luke's desire to live up to his father's legacy.
Then Parallax happened, and that effectively ruined Star Wars for Hal. Because even after learning that he'd been possessed by a fear demon, the fall of Anakin Skywalker just felt too familiar. The first time he watched Revenge of the Sith, Hal couldn't sit through the whole movie. When Anakin cut off Mace Windu's hand, Hal had to run to the bathroom. He barely made it there in time to throw up into the toilet, his mind replaying the moment when he'd chopped off Boodikka's hand to take her ring.
Unfortunately for Hal, most of the other Earth Lanterns were Star Wars fans too. So of course they noticed when he tended to avoid that topic, especially the prequel trilogy. There were several awkward times when Kyle, Simon, or Jessica would quote prequel memes, then realize Hal was there and quickly change the subject. At least it didn't happen too often, since there was rarely occasion for Earth's Green Lanterns to spend time together.
That changed when they adopted Keli and decided to live together on Earth. At the time, the Star Wars issue wasn't even something Hal had considered. But then Keli started watching the Clone Wars cartoon- he was absolutely flabbergasted to learn that they made a kid's show about war- and the problem became impossible to ignore. Because Keli absolutely loved the show and would often chatter about the characters.
Her favorite was Ahsoka, but Anakin was a close second, and boy wasn't that a kicker. Because while the movie version of Anakin Skywalker was moody and whiny, the Clone Wars version that Keli kept going on about reminded Hal far too much of himself, and just how far a Hero With No Fear could fall.
Then Keli called him "Skyguy" and it had taken every ounce of his will to not snap at her. Because it wasn't her fault that Hal had issues, that he saw way too much of himself in a fictional character in the worst way possible. But what the hell was he supposed to do?
Jo's suggestion of reading fanfiction was so out of left field that Hal had thought it was a joke at first. But then she explained the concept of AUs and sent him a link to a fic on Tales of Our Own where Anakin didn't die in Episode VI and instead helped Luke rebuild the Jedi Order. Hal was still skeptical, but decided to give it a go.
He was very glad he did. Hal was surprised by just how much depth the story gave to Anakin by making him earn his atonement. It struck directly at the core of what made Hal so deeply uncomfortable about the prequels, that Vader's fall reminded him so much of his own, yet there had been no struggle for redemption like Hal had experienced post-Parallax. Reading a version of Star Wars where Anakin instead proved to himself and everyone else that he still had the capacity to do good... well, it may not be canon to the movies but Hal thought it was more true to who Anakin Skywalker was supposed to be.
Jo had cackled when Hal told her that, and then made him sit through a full viewing of the prequel trilogy. It was actually bearable, and he found for the first time in years that he could just turn his brain off and enjoy the space wizards dueling with laser swords.

Trembling Essence:💙Clean up changes + New CG💙
Tumblr media
Helloo guys and welcome new followers, here's how the game development is going so far!
A very big thank you to the recent influx of interest and comments stemming from my last game development post! I will try to get to everything when I can! :]
Important notice towards updates about Trembling Essence:
Tumblr media
For a good while I've been able to post updates about the game's progress weekly! Now that it's getting closer to fall and spooky month(Yay! :]) I am going to continue to be busy so I want to let you guys know that future updates will be irregular. Game development posts will be every 1-4 weeks depending on how things go. :[]
I spent the first few days continuing off from the previous development post by going through the last of The Swamplands and patched some things up! Towards the end of that week however, I got very busy and didn't get a chance to get to the cabin section or much else which is why this was delayed by an extra week so I appreciate the patience! :]
New CG:
Tumblr media
I drew up a new CG that you can get depending on your choices when talking to Noah. My play tester saw the first version I colored up but unfortunately the perspective was really off and his shoulders were too wide. I was given a couple of tips and pointers so I redid it and here's how it looks for right now. I couldn't do much else after that. :,,,]]]]
Last bit of clean up changes:
Intro:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When it came to the introduction of Noah, the new parallax effect I added created a small glitch where the HP/COLD indicators were still shown behind CG's during a screen transition. There was some minor dialog adjustments, mainly describing certain situations a bit better. The moments where Noah talks to the player(Y/N) have been tweaked, not by too much but just enough to fill out this section of the game a little more. While I was going through the choices, I came across new dialog I added at some point and never came back to so I fixed it up just a little too. :]
Before:
Tumblr media
After:
Tumblr media
I altered the choice text for this since the previous wording was a little confusing from my play testers perspective. A good portion of the dialog was fixed and there was going to be a timed situation later on but I decided not to add it since this is a fairly straightforward path.
Chasm Ending:
Tumblr media
This ending got expanded by a fair amount mainly because the end is awkwardly abrupt and I didn't like that. I corrected it but the CG you see at this part didn't match the text so I went back one last time and a added visual effect. Overall, this part is done! :]
Tumblr media
If you like what I create, please consider supporting what I do on kofi! All donations and tips help tremendously while I continue to work on the game. Thank you to those that optionally bought the [Extended Demo] and the March 2023 demo on itch.io. :,]
Q&A / Ask box is open:
To know and understand Noah through Asks and random posts about lore, they'll be under #Get to know: Noah ! :]
**Some asks won't be answered if it contains spoilers but I do appreciate what I receive. :,,]
If you have any questions about Trembling Essence/Noah feel free to ask here or on itch.io please. This makes it easier for me to see and answer accordingly! I enjoy hearing from you guys!
I can't guarantee I'll be able to answer them right now since I practice drawing for responses but do know that I've seen them!
This update is getting fairly long so I'll stop here. Again, thank you to everyone for your continued support and influx of interest! I really wasn't expecting any of it since I got very busy towards the end. While I continue working behind the scenes on the game I'll try and respond to stuff/comments I missed! :,]

3D Parallax After Effect Ads Allow Elements To Become More Interactive!
Gone are those days when business owners use to take help of the traditional marketing and advertising tools. Some of them use to be very costly and that’s the reason why small and medium scale business owners were not able to afford them. Now they are looking for advanced, cost effective and modern day’s advertising and marketing solutions. If you are also looking forward to this, then the time has come to take help of 3D parallax. So first you need to understand what it is. The parallax effect happens when the elements on a single page start to move at variable speeds. This ultimately creates a 3D effect. Here what happened is the image in the background will be help at a place or it will move very slowly and the other texts and images on that page will be scrolled normally. 3D parallax is a kind of effect that brings a sense for the viewers as if things are moving in that space. Due to this reason, the ads which are created on the basis of 3D parallax effect are able to draw attention of audiences quickly.
Take Help Of 3D Parallax Ads This Time
3D parallax after effect ads are now becoming more and more popular in the modern day’s business world. These ads allow the elements to appear in a more interactive and layered manner. This is a kind of depth which creates the most immersive experience for the customers. These ads are able to grab attention of the customers very quickly. It’s the digital world that has now become too crowded. To make your products and services stand out in this type of digital world, you must take help of 3D parallax ads.

The best system to play Gameboy games on is... well... you can play them on many devices.
Officially it would be GBA SP because it can run Gameboy and GB Colour games.
However, very few backlit SPs were ever released (they are frontlit). So a better unit for Gameboy Advance games might be the DS Lite, which universally is backlit and which is lightweight enough to not cause problems. It also has better ergonomics than the SP, but I am bugged by the black borders and empty second screen.
A really popular mod is called the "Gameboy Macro", which is when you take a DS Lite lower screen and use it solely as a gameboy advance. It is a great way to recycle DS units with a broken top screen, a common issue, though it makes me cringe to think some people modify perfectly fine units this way.
Tumblr media
The Lite also has issues with the cartridge sticking out the bottom, so many prefer using the "phat" for this purpose. The original DS is both frontlit and backlit for some reason. The image is still an improvement on frontlit SPs.
The best units to play DS and 3DS games on are... the DS and 3DS.
Specifically the best place for NDS games is the DSi XL. No non-DS device has the touchscreen versatility to run DS games well, and it's very awkward scaling the tiny screen on an emulator.
The 3DS is also not a great place for DS games. The 3DS top parallax screen is incapable of a 1:1 pixel ratio even in pixel-perfect mode, which already has the issue of black borders around the screens, making touch-based games more finicky.
It is especially apparent on the XL models but is also an issue on the smaller 3ds models.
Tumblr media
The best unit to play DS games on is the DSi XL. It has a backlit screen and more power and memory than the first two units, making loading faster. It doesn't have the scaling issues of the 3ds, as it doesn't need to do any upscaling at all - the XL has the same number of pixels as a normal DS.
I've never used a DSi XL because all the ones sold in the UK are these ugly beige colours and they never took off, but if you don't mind the loss of the GBA slot, it's the best device for DS games.
Unfortunately DSis seem to be plagued by yellowing screens. I can tell you the small unit I just bought has some very slight yellowing on both screens.
Tumblr media
What's the best way to play 3ds games? Well, on a 3ds obviously. It's even harder to accurately emulate 3ds games than DS games, and you lose the 3d effects altogether.
But which 3ds is best?
It depends on what you want. The 3ds more than any other Nintendo system besides the Gameboy is heavily based on preference instead of objective superiority.
To get it out the way first, while the original 3ds has the sleekest look, it's the worst one. The original 3ds and 3dsXL have a much worse 3D implementation, relying on you to stare at the screen at an odd angle.
Tumblr media
Not only does the New3ds fix the 3d with an eye tracking sensor, it also has more power again, and a "c-stick". I also think the screens on the New3ds are of a higher quality and run flat games better too.
However the New3dsXL has some downgrades. The SD card is replaced with a microSD but now requires a mini screwdriver to access, removing the back plate. The stylus is also a really tiny one like on the DS, in an awkward place, and the metallic skin on the console will decay very quickly with use. My New3DSXL's skin started peeling under my hands after just six months of use.
The New3DSXL is the best unit to play 3ds games if you are looking to have all the features at their most optimal. It is the best by far for playing in 3d. It can also run the DS library fine, if in a poor image quality.
Personally I prefer the XL, the larger size is easier on the eyes, though the customizable panels on the hard-to-find normal size New3ds are cute too.
Tumblr media
If you don't care for 3d, the Wedge and Doorstop may be for you.
The 2ds has all the features of a 3ds apart from the 3d, while in a wedge shape that looks dreadful but actually feels more ergonomic. It has similarities to the first Gameboy Advance and you can't tell you're holding something so tall.
The original 2DS is sold for much cheaper than the other units because Nintendo sold it for cheaper and nobody particularly wants one, so it's the most affordable way to try every game in the DS library, especially if you pair it with a jailbroken SD card. Unfortunately it still uses the 3ds screen, just with no 3d slider, so it still upscales DS games and doesn't have perfect rendering of 3ds games either, but it's harder to tell as the screen's tiny.
Tumblr media
The New 2ds XL was the last DS ever sold, it came out after Switch. A lot of cute variants of the 2ds XL exist, and most games coming out around its release didn't have 3d enabled anyway. The feature had died in popularity, so while a 2d 3ds was originally scoffed at, in 2017 it just made sense.
While the New2ds XL looks fancy in a distance, the ergonomics are worse than any 3ds, and far worse than the wedge 2ds. The New2dsXL is all style and no substance, with the speakers being covered by the user's hands, and it's made out of a flimsy plastic. It's clear Nintendo made the materials for the hull cheaper and cheaper over time, so by the end of the 3ds's life they had gone from a very premium-feeling device to cheap plastic. The Switch would follow this design philosophy.
I do salivate over that Pikachu version and I'd enjoy trying one, but my mind tells me it's not a great device.
Tumblr media
All told, which do I think is better? Well I think the 3ds XL having the most features is inviting for me, and I have the choice of turning off 3D. However if you want bang for your buck, the 2ds wedge might be your safest option.
Unfortunately the New 2ds XL and New 3ds XL will cost you as much as a Nintendo Switch these days. It seems that sellers have wisened up to the demand from people who missed out on the 3ds and want to try it out. There's also talk of IPS screens being better and the New2ds XL, 3ds XL and DSi XL all use IPS screens, so people are scalping them or raising prices.

Procreate Dreams
I've been playing around in Procreate Dreams for about a week or so now, and I think I've got enough of a handle on the software to offer a fair review! If you're interested in hearing my thoughts, click the read-more below.
A little context before we get started; I have two degrees in animation, but they're both in 3D. My personal specialty is tech and articulation/rigging, but I think my background puts me in a unique position with Procreate Dreams; I know all of the theory behind animation, but I'm not going into Procreate Dreams and comparing it to a professional-grade software I generally prefer to use (like Toon Boom Harmony, for example).
So, let's get into it!
First Impressions
I hated it. I opened the software, it crashed. I couldn't figure out how to enable onion skins. I couldn't increase or decrease the exposure of my frames. I couldn't figure out how to swap to the eraser. I was confused, I was frustrated, and then I realized that I was expecting to jump in and animate without taking the time to learn the software first.
Once I stopped trying to strong-arm it and started looking up documentation, things got a little easier.
Re-Thinking My Approach
Procreate Dreams isn't comparable to any other animation software I've used before. The UI is different, there's a focus on gesture over buttons, and everything about it is meant to be minimalistic. None of this reflects poorly on the program, in my opinion. It's different. You can't go to Procreate Dreams and get mad at it for not being like the other software out there in terms of how it's used. In fact, I think one area of Dreams that should be applauded is the sheer ambition on display. It's a hybrid of traditional frame-by-frame animation and offers a slimmed down version of some of After Effects' most useful compositing & motion graphics tools. That's just plain cool.
The Good
For those of you who've used Procreate Dreams, you may find it's a little... difficult to see all the good it has to offer through the muddied waters it's launch-day bugs kicked up, but under all the grime, there's a little bit of gold.
Dreams is a one time, $20 USD purchase. That's huge in terms of affordability and accessibility in the software market right now.
The "Perform" option is great, and I think we'll see the longer that it's out, the more creative people are going to get in using it. I've already seen people create gorgeous parallax on their illustrations.
Simple compatibility with Procreate is a huge win. I'm finding my pipeline uses both software together.
The UI is a mixed bag overall, but I find the ability to move between flipnote mode and timeline mode to be great. It keeps the screen free, but I can still access the features I need while doing frame-by-frame.
The move/filters option is a great way to add a little compositing magic to your work.
The Bad
The "bad" here exclusively covers issues with the software as intended. Bugs will be covered under "The Ugly" below.
The lack of a lasso tool is a huge setback. I've seen people saying that it doesn't make sense not to have that feature at launch, especially when it's part of Procreate, but I understand why it may have been difficult to implement in conjunction with the move/perform/warp options. If you save a warp on top of an illustration, then cut and move part of the drawing, how is the warp/local translation data applied to that image? Does the pixel remember it's movement, or is it applied on top of the drawing? There's a lot to consider.
Similarly, the "reference" tool in Procreate would be an excellent tool to add color to layers beneath current layers. "Add Reference Track" would be great! That said, I think this conflicts with the move/warp tools like the above.
The timeline is a time sink. I should be able to adjust the exposure of my frames easily and consistently. As of right now, I have an 80-20 shot of selecting my layer or grabbing the handle for exposure. A small button on the edge of each frame (like a dot) would improve this considerably.
As far as I can tell, you can't mask a group onto another group.
No double-tap on the Apple Pencil 2 to swap to the eraser. This one I'm not sure about; it runs in Procreate, it seems simple to implement here... though it'd be great to see it customizable.
The Ugly
This includes bugs and other issues that are separate from the features (or lack thereof) of Procreate Dreams.
Crashes are frequent. I haven't used the software reliably during any of my sessions so far, but Dreams' autosave feature is extremely strong and very forgiving, so I have lost no work.
My pen pressure become erratic at times, necessitating a restart of the software.
Sometimes my pen will stop working, though other features in the app will continue to run.
The good news is, I think that Dreams is overall a huge win for artists and animators worldwide. Everything that's not working about Dreams will hopefully be resolved in future updates. I'd encourage anyone who wants to try animating for the first time to pick it up-- with the understanding it might take some time to get used to/master.

2024 FIC WRAPPED
Tagged by @teamdilf - thanks my friend!
Words posted: 42,888
Additional words written: Hmm, let's see ... I'll see if I can get a rough idea. Looks like roughly 35,000 or so.
Fandoms: Mass Effect and Dragon Age to the absolute surprise of no one.
Highest Kudos: Pass the Knife - 81 Kudos (Mass Effect)
Highest Hit Oneshot: Dear Joker - 250 Hits (Mass Effect)
New Things I Tried: This was the year that I dipped my toes a couple of times into ships other than Shaeed and Shakarian. I also just allowed myself to write a bunch of short little things for prompts and I really enjoyed that. This year was also just for having fun and following my weird little heart.
Fic I Spent the Most Time On: That's definitely going to be Pass The Knife, as I actually started writing this in June or July 2023 and I am nowhere closed to finished.
Fic that I Spent the Least Amount of Time On: Hard to say but I think it's probably going to be Defy. It was a short little prompt fill that didn't take me long at all, but I am actually very proud of it. It's a bit experimental. And kind of a gut punch.
Favorite Thing I Wrote: I am once again shouting from the rooftops for literally everyone to please go and read blood & grenadine!! It's sooo much fucking fun. Who cares if you're not into a Zakarian ship? You won't regret it, and you will have a great time reading it the whole time. It's a oneshot too, so it won't take much effort.
Favorite Things I Read: Mapmaking by teasoni - I'm back on my Dragon Age: Origins bullshit again and I am obsessed with Bann Teagan and the Hero of Ferelden. Smutty smutty oneshot. XII. press your fingers to my weary eyes by korble - Korbie knows me too well and this Bray/Femshep piece is both sexy and will hurt your heart in all the right ways. Stellar Parallax by korble - Korb's in progress no Reapers AU has me by the fucking throat. As A Stranger Or A Friend? by writernopal - This is @writernopal's (hi!) original story that I have not finished reading (I'm so sorry Nopal I swear I will finish it, I'm just so bad at focusing my reading!) and it's so much fun. Do you like pirates? Do you like fantasy? Do you like lizardfolk, like a lot? Please go read it!
New Works: Oh lord, here we go...
- Holding On To Hell: Shaeed post-destroy ending trauma fest. Will make me cry (already has). Shepard isn't doing so great after she somehow survives the explosion on the Citadel. There are gaps in her mind where the Reapers used to be, where visions of the first big casualty of the war, Ashley Williams, takes root. Zaeed takes her to the middle of nowhere to try to live again after it all. Can they reconcile everything that's happened and their own feelings? Has Shepard lost her mind for good? All this and more once I sit my happy ass down and write it. - Tentatively titled: Moths to a Flame: Lavellan/Blackwall post Trespasser. After seeing Solas for who he really is, losing her connections to her clan and feeling lost at see, Valethen Lavellan asks to travel with Thom Rainier as he finishes his apology world tour. During that time, friends grow closer, as well as Valethen begins to plan a wild and desperate (albeit very crafty) plot to get Solas to talk to her once more, in an attempt to sway him from his path one more time. - Vainglory - Valethen Lavellan's origin story. A young mage, she goes off on a desperate bid to save her husband's life, who is dying of a mysterious wasting illness. She makes a deal with a spirit and everything goes devastatingly wrong. - Kith & Kin - Months before the events of the Divine's Conclave, Bahek Adaar is an up and coming member of the Valo-Kaas mercenary group. Eager to proof herself, everything seems to be going very well for the witty rogue. - placeholder title: The Flock - Just as the case of the mysterious death of a cult leader goes cold, a young detective joins the Agency for Criminal Investigations (a department within the bureaucratic nightmare that is Colonial and Extra-Planetary Affairs), and not all is as it seems. - placeholder title: No Happy Endings - Mór Cousland thought she had exactly the life she wanted. The daughter of a powerful Ferelden noble, she lived a life full of adventure by traveling often for combat tournaments and duels, and joining the rangers and scouts in Highever to help keep the lands her family holds safe from threats both natural and unnatural. That is until it is all ripped away from her on one fell night. Conscripted to the Grey Wardens in exchange for saving her life from Arl Howe's betrayal, she must learn what duty actually is, and grapple with the horrible things she must do to defeat an unthinkable evil: the Blight.
Tagging: @commander-krios, @sparatus, and @stormikins if you guys want!
