INVISIBLE DISABILITIES AWARENESS WEEK 2022 all this week has been about raising awareness for those of us who live with #disabilities that cannot be seen. We are forever having to be our own advocates, reminding society that we are sick even though they can't see it. Even as recently as while I was undergoing my #Cancer treatment, my existing invisible conditions were mostly overlooked, and instead of #disabled I was seen as uncooperative and entitled. This of course led to feelings of massive guilt, shame and frustration on top of the pain and anxiety I was already enduring. I'm disabled, not a diva!! He was in bed, sleepless and disconsolate, when the girl came into his room and stood in front of him without a word. Her long night gown brushed against the floor.  “I saw there was light in this room,” she whispered. “You’re giving off light.” Then she crawled into his bed. He was still sick from lack of sleep and he didn’t know what he was doing. He grabbed her tiny body hard, too hard, and pressed her to him.  She said nothing. She just lay there. He buried his face in the back of her neck. Then he fell asleep.  It was as though he had plunged deep into the waters of sleep and found dreams. He slept only a few minutes that first time. Every night after that, she came to his room. He would hold her tightly and then, covered with sweat, he’d fall asleep. His psychological instability slowly dissipated like condensation from a mirror. Beverley stopped wandering through the hospital hallways all night. Axel and Beverley left the hospital with a silent and desperate agreement. Both of them understood that this close-knit arrangement had to be secret… Beverley is now fifteen and has been diagnosed with borderline personality disorder. She has no sense of boundaries between herself and other people. She also has no self-defence mechanism.  In past eras, girls like Beverley might be locked up in a mental institution permanently or they might be forced to undergo sterilization or a lobotomy to control their lack of morals and unrestrained sexuality. Girls like Beverley often still follow the wrong people home and trust people who are not worth their trust.  Beverley is lucky she found me, Axel reassures himself. I do not want to harm her or make money off her. I just need her next to me… He convinces himself that he’s protecting her from the outside world, but he also knows that he’s using her. He’s ashamed but can’t figure out any other alternative. He’s afraid of returning to life without her.

Difficile definire la subdola malattia, è tutto nel nostro cervello. Io ci sono passata e la depressione è sempre dietro l’angolo perciò da curare ancora. Una volta ho avuto un esaurimento nervoso (all’epoca si chiamava così), poi ho imparato che si trattava di trauma post partum Quanti traumi subiamo nella vita, neanche possiamo calcolarli. Nel mio caso c’è da valutare “l’abbandono del nido”, quando i figli vanno per la loro strada e ti dai conto che non sei più indispensabile, li hai cresciuti ed ora sei sola. L’ultimo è stato il mobbing (mobbing = quei comportamenti perpetrati da parte di uno o più individui nei confronti di un altro individuo, prolungato nel tempo e lesivo della dignità personale e professionale nonché della salute psicofisica dello stesso, e può essere messo in atto da chiunque. Una tipologia di mobbing verticale o mobbing dall'alto è riscontrabile quando a mettere in atto tali attività sono individui che esercitino un'autorità in un determinato contesto, su altre persone.) sopportato sul lavoro tanto che mi dicevo “non sarei rimasta viva per la pensione”. Ma ci sono arrivata. A pezzi. Fra le conseguenze ci può essere il “disturbo traumatico da stress” che può associarsi a perdita di autostima, ansia, esaurimento, depressione, insonnia, nevrosi, isolamento sociale, attacchi di panico, ma anche causa di cefalea, annebbiamenti della vista, tremore, tachicardia, sudorazione. Tutte cose conosciute, anzi aggiungo i dolori reumatici, che ora non ho più. Per me era un problema fare una telefonata, non potevo proprio parlare, quindi evitavo anche le persone, anche familiari tanto non potevano capire, perché tu stessa non sapevi spiegare, non ti conoscevi più. E svegliarmi al mattino piangendo era ricorrente, col pensiero “Cosa ci faccio qui?” E, programmare la mia dipartita dal momento che già non esistevo.
