The Sides as Guardians: Part 1

(Author’s note: Here we go! Special (brief) appearance of my new head cannon for a sleep-deprived Logan, based on my experience with words being uncooperative at night!)

Virgil jerked awake, heart racing.

Something was wrong. Very wrong.

He didn’t know what, exactly, but he knew it was bad.

He felt his anxiety kicking in, his heart pounding, his breathing speeding up.

‘No. Not the time, Virge,’ he thought, putting a hand out to the staircase railing to try to ground himself.

Wait. What?

He was… in the living room?

In his usual spot for the videos??

And so was everyone else???

“Is it mor-‘scuse me-morning already, kiddos?” Patton tiredly asked, wiping a yawn off his face.

“You are… technically correct, Patton,” Logan said, buffering in exhaustion, “but two…forty-seven is… far from an …optimum time to start the day.”

”What’s going on, where’s Thomas?” Virgil asked, starting to raise his voice in concern.

“Maybe he’s dead!” Remus chimed in with a gleeful grin.

“Nope,” Roman said, quickly putting his finger in his mouth and holding it up, as if to test the breeze, “we’re in a Dreamscape.”

“No, you idiot,” Remus fired back, somehow having removed the art from the wall behind him and taken a bite out of the corner, “We’re in the Mind Palace.”

“I think I know my way around the Imagination, thank you very much,” Roman extra-d in response.

“Eat this,” Remus said, yeeting a chunk of the art at Roman, “and tell me I’m wrong.”

“What?! No!” Roman protested, as a very confused Logan and Patton looked on. Janus was rather enjoying the chaos, and Virgil just rolled his eyes.

“Dammit!” Remus pouted. “Fine, then tell me who pulled us in.”

“I-well-you-tha… Oh.”

With an otherworldly screech, and a rush of displaced air, a spherical black-and-white portal appeared where Thomas normally stood.

“Nope! Not doing this, we need to get out of here - Roman, do your thing.” Virgil exclaimed, tempest tongue in full effect.

“On it!” Roman said, waving his arm to end the scenario.

Nothing happened. He tried again.

“Wha-I-you-rude!” Still nothing.

“Fascinating!” Logan mused, inching towards the portal.

“Careful!” Virgil warned.

Logan nodded in response, stepping closer to examine the swirling pattern of the portal’s center.

As he stepped closer, an oh-so-familiar sound effect played as text appeared in their collective POVs:

[New Quest: Enter the Portal]

Roman’s eyes lit up, and he strode quickly towards to the portal.

Virgil sprinted into him, knocking him off-course.

“No-one is going in the DEATH BALL!”

Remus snorted as Roman readjusted his sash. The portal let out a small screech.

“It’s not an omen, Virgil-ance Wing, it’s a call to adventure!”

Janus looked around the room as Virgil replied, “A call to the void! Do you know what’s through there?”

“Remus,” Janus deadpanned.

“There are two of them?!” Patton exclaimed.

”Dammit.” Virgil sighed, looking around the room, then facepalming. “No… Remus went through the portal.”

Remus, indeed, was nowhere to be found.

i see people thinking that the side story is the bad ending for kim dokja. and don't get me wrong, he doesn't come back after the door opens, but that is because kimcom CHOSE that.

they had the option to open a door where kim dokja woke up, but they chose to go through the door where he doesn't wake up because they know that first door is a trap (like 49/51), and they want all of kim dokja. and when they go through, kim dokja is gone, but he's left a note. he is STILL OUT THERE (and part of him is with lhh right now. it's complicated)

anyway this is just to say KIM DOKJA IS BACK IN THE SIDE STORY. he is just not with kimcom *yet*. i need to make this clear because i keep seeing people saying things that sound like people think he's gone for real in the side story.

Is it true that there's no animosity between you and... you know, you know who. You never talk about her in any way. I guess I'm curious. You guys seemed like really close friends and then just weren't friends at all. And there was some stuff she said that seemed very targeted at you...

I don't know if she feels any animosity toward me or not any more. Our mutual friends have said she doesn't and I take them on their word in that regard, assuming that if they have an answer for me it's because they're aware how she feels. I wouldn't know and it's not my place to put words in her mouth.

I haven't spoken to her/about her in a long time and the only time she even crosses my mind is when people bring her up to me. As for me feeling any animosity? I'll admit my feelings on her these days are complicated and way too nuance-core for people who aren't my friends to hear about but I wouldn't call them animosity in any way. I inherently want people my friends care about to live well because I care about my friends, and anyone my friends care about by proxy and I still share friends with her. I would never wish ill on people my friends care about so animosity doesn't fit into that by definition. I'd say I'm hurt more than anything and even then I've worked through a lot of it with trusted friends who have helped me deal with my emotions in a healthy way.

(Besides, my own life struggles keep me from even being able to invest time into animosity. I have to expend that energy loving my family, doing my best to support them during our struggles. And I've never been a hateful person it isn't in me. I would rather play 'Hot To Go' by Chappell Roan and teach my dad how to do the hand gestures to help him strengthen his muscles again than focus on hating anyone...)

I try not to think about her because it hurts. I often think that people forget that I'm a real person outside of her sphere, and that I wouldn't want to talk about what happened because I truly did consider her a friend for a long time. And when someone I consider a friend appears to not regard me with care any more suddenly and I don't even have closure on that... well... it hurts... A lot. Of course I never talk about it.

And I'm not stupid, I have seen some stuff she's said that I've gathered was about me. I remind myself that she has a right to vent in her own spaces and I truly mean that... it's just a shame that her own spaces have people who then have taken these things to me to show me (after all, I wouldn't have even seen these things myself if not for third-party anons going 'this u?') saying it is my own fault because I was a terribly cruel friend or my own fault for not listening to warnings about her when I had the chance and that makes me a stupid gullible bitch. You lot haven't seen some of the awful shit about me from some of her more ravenous fans and haters I've seen over the years that I've had to let roll off my back in the fear it would bring backlash - not even to me, to her. I don't want to be the cause of any hatred going to anyone.

Also I'm just not going to ever talk about the details of our fallen friendship or our fallen relationship. That's private. She might be a public person to some extent but I never was, even if I do gain some measure of small fandom for my work one day I'm just private about personal matters especially raw ones. I almost deleted this ask entirely but Idk I never stated that it bothers me when people talk to me about her from my own mouth, so I guess that's what this ramble is.

If you send me anything about Lily Orchard it will not be addressed. I am not a part of her life not even through our mutual friends. I do not know or care what's going on with her public/personal life. I haven't kept up. I will never keep up. Don't treat me as an extension of the situation because I am not in the situation. In the most plainly stated sense of the word: Leave me the Hell alone. (...pretty please.)

All I've wanted this entire time was to be left alone to process everything in a healthy, peaceful way. I'm workin' on it.

No I can’t. I won’t rant about the cephalopods. That there are pictures of what look to be nuclear waste disposal sites and ideas of how when humans are long gone how we’d terrify away sentient life with the disturbing pillars. Of what appears to be a dead whale skeleton and how that could be referencing a “whale fall” where an entire ecosystem develops around the carcass as it decomposes and is eaten by hundreds of creatures smaller than it. Like how splatoon world and culture is influenced by what dead humans left behind (and their hopes and dreams). Of how everything looks to be taken over by bleached coral, the results of algae (responsible for the magnificent colors of reefs) fleeing coral due to stress from pollution and climate change. Of potential new Marina and Pearl lore and more Agent 8 and memory dives and an authoritarian regime that seeks to erase your entire being and make you into a colorless disposal clone for their use. Virgil can crush a gun with his bare hands. Not even just so it bends like he can shatter a gun into shrapnel with very little effort. This applies to both cannon Virgil and AU's because buff Virgil is just my shit.

i read dog boy by hornung weeks ago and man. im still thinking about this book. as a therian it just REALLY hit home, and. my god. that ending. heartbreaking! but how else could things have ended.

god i adore this book. i'd recommend it to anybody who has read and enjoyed my otherkin works--its about an orphaned russian boy raised by a pack of feral dogs and oh boy!!! does it scratch all the right itches!!! its heavy and it doesnt pull its punches but its just so effective, gah.

(Author’s note: …I need a better name for this, lol)

[Asks: Open]

(yes this is an askblog/fic/thing - it’ll make more sense as we go!)

Thomas and Virgil jumped as a knock came from the front door, signaling the arrival of Thomas’ food.

Thomas peeled his headset off and made his way to the door as Roman got up from his spot on the couch, dramatically proclaiming: “Thank Zeus! I thought we were going to starve!”

Logan, sitting closest to the door, muttered something under his breath about that being “highly improbable,” as Thomas made his way back inside with the food.

“I’m just glad we found a new place on such short notice!” Patton chimed in cheerily.

“I hate short notices,” Virgil grumbled, peeking over Thomas’s shoulder as he unpacked the food, “And long notices… Change in general.”

Roman gasped melodramatically, saying “But variety is the spice of life, my friend! Would you have our dear Thomas spend his days trudging through the same dull routine ‘til the end of his days?”

“Did you see the Cinnamon Challenge?” Virgil deadpanned. He sighed, then said “But, no, I wouldn’t… because” (*points*) “you’d go stir-crazy and make us do something stupid.”

The sides continued to bicker and banter as Thomas enjoyed his food, then went back to playing Destiny 2.

It was a fun game, he thought (a distraction) - With a lot of different elements, that sometimes seem so different that they shouldn’t work, yet they somehow come together into a cohesive whole…

Even though, admittedly, it could be overwhelming at times.

Rather fitting, that.

Eventually, though - Despite how much fun he was having - He had to go to bed. Acquiescing to Janus’ request, he turned off the game - Then he walked around his apartment, turning off lights and doublechecking locked doors.

The sides all sunk out to their rooms as Thomas trudged upstairs to his.

As he fell asleep, he couldn’t help but think back on his day of gaming; All the worlds he’d seen, all the enemy types there were, all the armor he’d collected… It was so cool! He almost wished he could live in that universe instead!

…Almost.

I always thought this was just a paranoid delusion of his, since he was actively hallucinating at the time, but maybe there's a kernel of truth in there. If he got a little second-hand high. And honestly Park Jinsang IS scheming enough to arrange this, yjh is right to be suspicious

i know it’s cliche but home by cavetown feels like a zukka song too. maybe post-canon when zuko is feeling really overwhelmed with fire lord duties and sokka decides to stay in the palace with him. “i’m a little sick right now but i swear when im ready i will fly us out of here” “get a load of this monster he doesn’t know how to communicate” 😭😭 just… zuko the teenage fire lord and his secret caring boyfriend/water tribe ambassador.

Do you think you’ll ever get to writing a fic for the monster au? I’ve been thinking about it like a worm in my brain for weeks and I just want to hear more about the whole situation and dynamics like, are any of the characters “in” the cult? Do any of the characters interact in a casual way with one another? (like Mark and Adam or Thatcher and Evelin the ones that “don’t know eachother” yk?) do Dave and Thatcher still have that kind of “under the table vhs reviewer” dynamic? how much about the night Mark killed(?) Cesar does he remember is it like a blur or fully aware?

I am planning on making a prologue for the au, involving the night Mark went into the woods up to Cesar's death, but I haven't gotten around to it.

Arthur ends up getting them a shared tortoise, and they end up taking good enough care of it that they're allowed to get those cool exotic pets a couple of years later.
