Damian: I’m...sorry, Stephanie. *reaches out to put a hand on her shoulder but then retracts it at the last second and looks away* It must be so incredibly maddening— unsettling even; to be on the receiving end of such a vile rumor mill. I was disappointed that even Richard didn’t care to rebuke this heinous lie. MEN. Men, I say— their crude wickedness never ceases, their fragile egos never satiated, their—

Steph: *spins around and slaps both hands onto his shoulders* Thank you for telling me, Damian. You’re a trusty frie— um, comrade.

Damian: Naturally.

Steph (dramatically): Excuse me if I speak too much out of anger *Damian shakes head* but it seems like such a crime against…um…women warrants some citizens’ justice.

Damian: What are vigilantes for? *nodding very seriously* I have already sabotaged his grappling—

Steph: Red Robin isn’t our target, Damian— Tim Wayne is! You see, I have a friend with a few connections to the Daily Planet and I’m sure they’d LOVE to hear from a trusty, anonymous, inside source about...*gestures for Damian to finish*

Damian: ...About Drake’s comical death during a company-paid skiing retreat that he sanctioned.

Thinking about One Year Later time skip that comics had and since my first comics I started reading a ton around this era for were Batfam, I generally was pretty neutral-to-positive on it, because I think many batfam comics (Batgirl excepting, getting into that soon) benefited from the OYL time skip or at least were not negatively affected. HOWEVER reading more comics that took place at that time I am getting more negative on it, so anyway here is my breakdown on which titles were benefited by the OYL time skip, were neither benefited nor harmed, and were harmed by the OYL time skip.

Benefited from the OYL time skip:

Nightwing: Look there are no words for how bad nightwing comics were before the time skip. I know they weren't great after the time skip either but Dick was in drastic need of like some status quo reset. He just got sent through whump city and spent a long time failing at everything.

Robin: Similarly tim's comics also sucked before OYL time skip. it was bad. Willingham had that american military fetish group. Sure tim's still edgy and angsty but at least he got out of that. Tim having time to collect himself after mourning was also a good thing.

Teen Titans: there are no words for how bad the start of geoff johns teen titans run is. it's bad. Geoff Johsn doesn't understand the characters, Cassie's main character trait is "girl". Yeah Geoff Johns is still the writer at first but the team switch up allows us to see some new characters.

Neither benefited nor harmed:

Outsiders: I think the idea of outsiders going under cover for a long time is a neat one, however the way winick handles it is not. i'd say they got some benefits in that the comics felt kind of disjointed and chaotic and they got a nice clean reset, but some drawbacks in that no anissa/grace falling in love on screen (just a flashback) and the intro-plotline to bring them back was stupid.

Birds of Prey: I think they end the Infinite crisis plotlines pretty well and start back up with the time skip fine. Just smooth sailing in general. But they also were not in dire need of a reset, so it's not like they needed the time skip.

Harmed by the OYL time skip:

Wonder Woman: Like. I feel like hypothetically ti could've been done OK. But it was not. it just cut Diana's ambassador time short, she had some nice tie-ins but it wasn't worthy it, and the satisfying development Rucka did for the greek gods was completely ignored and forgotten by every single other writer it's so frustrating. Fully convinced they didn't even care about WW1987 when starting WW2006

Aquaman: Sub Diego was just erased in the TIE IN comics for 52 like tie in comics for an event not even the event itself and certainly not the solo title. and then suddenly Aquaman's gone and replaced by another blond guy named Arthur Curry. the plotlines pre infintie crisis also felt pretty rushed to completion. like they clearly got cut off.

Batgirl 2000: IDK if this coutns, because they cancelled her comic (rather than unsatisfying continuation after time skip) but I'm counting it b/c from what I remember they cancelled her comic b/c they were playing around with the idea of having a kate kane batwoman solo and didn't want 2 female lead batman titles at the time, and kate kane came out of 52. however. can't remember the source so don't quote me on it. (also. ofc kate didn't get a solo either they had no female lead batman titles)

If Kory and Dick ever had a chance if rekindling. What do you think that would look like? There’s something beautifully about lovers coming back to each other after so much time has passed and now being more mature with a slice of hurt and tragedy of the past still hanging over what happened to their relationship. They were so young and had so much on their shoulders when they were introduced to each other and now they are older and wiser.

i agree it can be so beautiful !!! there’s always a bittersweet tinge to the whole thing like “what we had was good”. Kory and Dick are 100% a “right person, wrong time” case to me. They were just really young and going through a lot of changes and add the whole tumultuous superhero double-life thing and things get messy. The cards were stacked against them. But i do feel like if given the chance, years after the fact and after both have grown up and softened, they could make it work. It would need a lot of work though, especially from Dick’s side. He would need to be more understanding of Kory’s point of view and confront his control issues. For Kory, she would need to work on her self-esteem and abandonment issues. While the two can absolutely help each other with these issues, it would be better if they tried to resolve them on their own because these two can become codependent. They would also need to work on their (excessive) sense of duty. This is where I feel like both can help each other out. Dick’s always had issues regarding his undying loyalty to Bruce and often needs a third party to pull him out of it. And for Kory, i get the sense hers has something to do with her abandonment issues. Like ‘if i don’t do this then everyone will leave me’ type thing. Having someone there to remind her that no, you are loved and wanted and you don’t have to do this would help her loads. This doesn’t mean they should never help out gotham or tamaran, it just means that when things get out of hand, the other is there to support.

If i had my way, in pre-52 continuity, they would have rekindled after Dick’s batman era. He’s done the ultimate “bearing my father’s burden” duty and frankly needs to reconnect with his own ideals and identity again. We all know the big role Kory (& the titans ofc) played in helping Dick step out of Batman’s shadow and forge his own path so this could be like a callback to that. Both are older, mature and now have gained a new understanding of each other’s circumstances (Dick finally recognising Kory’s duty and devotion to Tamaran and Kory understanding more of Dick’s thought process and morals while assimilating into Earth). They’re acutely aware of the others (and their own) faults that lead to the breakdown of the relationship in the first place BUT can also recognise that what they had was good while it lasted. And they still love each other, even after all these years. It doesn’t matter where they are or what mask they wear , they’ll always be there for the other and see them for who they truly are. And you know what, why not give it another shot? They’ll figure things out as they go because they both know that when they’re together - it just feels right.

hello everyone! i thought of sharing this for awhile regarding the ways to interact with me. this might be long but please don't let this intimidate you, it's just something i wanna share since i've seen those 'engage with your mutuals' posts but i wanna reiterate and bring this up lately since i've got some new mutuals/mutuals that i haven't interacted with yet.

memes and opens are the best way to jump and start interactions. they are always accepting responses. even unprompted asks. 24/7/52/365. always.

i love plotting and i love building dynamics. and if you’re not used to first meetings, i’m open to pre-established relationships between our characters. i get people being busy and real life, and some are too afraid to approach me, but please try to make an effort to engage. i write an OC of color, and it sucks when i don’t receive enough engagement or people not showing interest or interact towards the lore and bio i post. i post starter calls, opens, memes and there are days i don’t receive anything and i get frustrated. it makes me feel like i’ve been overlooked and ignored. and we all don't want that to happen, right? remember, the more you try to engage, the more i'd likely do the same thing to you and engage as well, have you as a writing partner and you could be my treasured mutual.

there are many ways to engage or showing interest with me other than having threads with me. liking my HCs/edits/lore, reblogging my promo, sending me asks about trinity and her lore. it makes me feel better that there are people who actually care about my muse and her world building, which i've worked so hard on. it also helps me know you wanna interact with me at some point.

i don’t have any deadline or due date to start writing with me right away. but if we’ve been mutuals for months and you never make an effort to interact or write with me (honestly, i would try my best to interact with every mutual i follow but it sucks whenever i don’t get reciprocated in return), i have every right to break mutuals. i mostly stick to mutuals who actively engage or interact with me. just a simple, “hey i’m too busy but i want write with you in the future" would make a difference. i just feel like it's unfair of me if i need to set up a deadline, as we all have real lives and obligations to take care of.

importantly, please don’t take this one as an intent of me pressuring you to write with me immediately or making you guys feel guilty. i totally understand how people can’t come up with plot ideas right off the bat or have been overwhelmed with threads or whatever reason. i've been here on this site for long, people come and go, but i'm more drawn to people who try to take action.

at last but not least, please don’t hesitate to communicate with me or let me know why we haven’t rped yet or if you’ve got something that might work between our muses. as long you’re being respectful and polite, we’re totally good. and if you feel like we don't vibe after i post this, feel free to softblock or hardblock. i'd get hurt and upset if anyone do this ofc, but you do whatever you makes you feel comfortable and curate your own dash.

can anybody please explain the appeal of tim drake because ive been into the batfamily for a while now and tbh im really confused on why people like his character so much compared to the other robins. like they all have their own thing going on and he just... doesnt?

Have you read his Robin solo? Because if not and you want to try to like him but just don’t understand why people do, that’s what I’d recommend. That and like, Young Justice 1998. 

Because Tim definitely... does have his own thing going on. Maybe not in the same way as the others, but like, there’s a reason he has a 183 issue long solo comic that ran for like 16 years: he was fun to read about!

But I will give some more specific thoughts on the subject as a Tim Drake Appreciator™ (this got long im sorry)

The appeal of Tim (especially early on Tim) is kinda the fact that he’s this more normal kid. For a while that is his ‘thing’. He was basically designed to be a self-insert (he definitely became more than that along the way, but from the start he was meant to be relatable) in a different way than how Dick and Jason had been before him. 

Like the role of Robin from the start was this way to create a character young readers could identify with more, could see themselves in more. And Dick and Jason did that, but they still had this element to their lives and stories that was more... unattainable for the average reader. Dick was a circus prodigy, Jason was either also a circus prodigy if we remember pre-crisis or if we go with his post-crisis story he’s this street-wise orphaned kid who had a really tough life but still went on to be a hero anyways. Obviously those lives are relatable for some people, but those’re definitely not as broadly recognized as common upbringings especially not by DC trying to market to the ‘average’ kid/young teen.

But the creation of Tim changed the game a bit. Dick and Jason were these aspirations a kid could look to like ‘wow I want to be cool like that!’ but Tim was a Robin designed for kids to look at and go ‘wow, his problems and civilian life are just like mine AND he’s a hero, I want to be cool like that!’, ya know? Tim was... just a clever kid with an average life who managed to connect some dots and had enough drive to want to fix things he saw were a problem, he didn’t have the same kind of heightened drama backstory the others did. The Robins that came after Tim definitely didn’t have this idea of relatability in mind the same way either. Unfortunately Steph’s time as Robin was much more of a marketing ploy than an actual like... decision to make her Robin, so it’s hard to really fit her into this conversation. But Damian from the start was first of all initially created not to be Robin but just as the son of Talia and Bruce back in the 80’s, but when he was later reimagined into the character that would become Robin he had the whole ‘raised by and is the heir to the league of assassins and is the son of batman’ thing going on still. He just was not supposed to be relatable that same way, he was a character designed with different things in mind.

I really think it was more just DC’s 90′s era younger-audience comics in general that tried to push that relatability thing (like in YJ how Cissie even after quitting the team stays a major character as a civilian throughout, and the civilian aspect that’s super present in Bart’s 90s solo too, etc), but later in the 2000’s that idea was definitely pushed to the side in favor of... putting in even more dramatic superhero-y stuff.

And the other thing that’s... such a more normal thing but it actually made him unique here, was that Tim’s dad was still alive until like 2004 (so 15 years into Tim being around as a character). This gave Tim a lot more typical ‘family school girlfriends normal life etc’ problems on top of/in contrast with his superhero problems. These just manifested in very different ways than they could with the other Robins because of that unique situation with a living civilian parent who doesn’t know about hero stuff (until he did find out which lead to that whole Unmasked thing, but there was only the brief time around War Games & Identity Crisis where Jack knew Tim was actively Robin and he was... still alive) Tim also had his life at school expanded way more than most other Robins, like, he had such an extended supporting cast of civilian friends which is a really interesting thing to read about (and the fact that he hasn’t had that stuff since the New 52 I think really hurts his character)

And then related to that loss of his dad... Personally another thing about Tim that really interests me is how a lot of things were more... his choice. if that makes sense. A lot of characters in the Batfamily were struck with tragedy/extreme trauma before they became heroes and that’s what spurred them into this life of becoming heroes. Tim’s situation wasn’t like that at all! When he first got involved in everything during Lonely Place of Dying, the only tragedy he’d experienced was watching Dick’s tragedy happen. Which sure yes traumatic obviously, but that’s not the same as how pretty much all the other Bats had gone through these very personal losses or other sorts of very first-hand personal traumas that served as motivators. Tim didn’t start to experience those things until after he got involved in the hero life, and aside from his Mom’s death which was more of just an unrelated incident (that technically happened before he was officially Robin but it was during his time training to become Robin), pretty much all these other tragedies and things... would not have happened or been experienced by him had he not become Robin. 

That’s not me placing blame on him or anything like that, because god no that’s not how that works, but it’s very interesting because from his point of view he definitely feels that guilt because he knows him being Robin played a role in a lot of it (Thinking specifically about in Adventure Comics #3 when Kon even says “I know what guilt does to you” to him like it’s... it’s a thing with him!). His dad was murdered because he was Robin. He only met Steph and started dating her through being Robin, and thus he would not have experienced the loss of his girlfriend dying like that had he not been Robin. Tim met both Conner and Bart through being Robin, and would not have had a personal connection to them when they died otherwise. The whole Bruce’s death thing after Final Crisis, like. I could go on honestly, that was only talking about losses not even his own experiences nearly getting killed, but yeah, all these personal tragedies were experienced by him specifically because he chose to bring himself into this life, which I think in turn plays into how throughout his comics you see him go from having this really optimistic view on things and being really hopeful to seeing him at that low point he reaches by the time of Red Robin. (thinking about that one post that points out how Tim started out in the 90′s as an optimist and Steph a cynic and by the time they were Red Robin and Batgirl in 2009 they had switched outlooks...) 

I also think that him having had such a great team book with the original Young Justice can help contribute to people liking him. His friendships with the rest of the core four and that team in general are really compelling. (and that’s something like again when looking at the other Robins, while Dick had the Titans ofc, Jason never really found footing with a team outside of like one mission with the Titans and then We All Know How Damian’s Teen Titans Stuff Went. Steph also only ever really worked with a team outside the batfam on very brief occasions) and even though I’m not as big of a fan of the 2003 Teen Titans run that came after YJ, people who read Young Justice and also that could follow and be attached to those same characters over a pretty decently long period of time. 

Idk man, I don’t really have an ultimate point here i’m just rambling. I can definitely understand not seeing the appeal to him right away (honestly i’ve been into Batfam since like 2013/2014 and Tim did not become one of my faves until 2020) especially if like... idk when you say ‘into the batfamily’ that can mean a lot of different things. If you’re reading more like the bigger events with the batfam sure Tim can kinda fade into the bg a bit, if you’re more talking about fanon the fanon version of him is prettyyyyy uhhhhh not really the same as how he was in pre New 52 canon, if you’re mainly reading New 52 era Batfam stuff then that Tim I also don’t understand the appeal of bc thats Not My Boy, if you’re interested in a different member primarily and only familiar with Tim when he shows up in things focused on that other character then it’s easy to not really understand the appeal right away bc he’s more there to support that character rather than shine in his own right. 

I think it’s also worth mentioning he’s just not everybody’s cup of tea, and that’s totally fine. Like, these are fictional characters and sometimes you just will vibe with a character and sometimes you won’t! idk if this helped at all or even made sense. but yeah. I just think he’s neat 😌

CHAPTER 1

The truth was that there was something a bit gross about red carpet coverage. Yes, it was exciting and nervewracking in a good way, sometimes actually interesting conversations were held and most of the time - with the help of a little editing of course - the result was worth it. But there was also just a lot of waiting. Standing around. Constant screams around you. A. lot. of. fake. laughter. And that made sense in a way, who could keep their energy up for so long... well not me. Between interviews, I would just drop my shoulders, trying to relax my shoulders a little, just to cheer up again moments later, when I suddenly had another chance. Minutes of fast speaking, cheeriness and ... well, sometimes, yes, fake laughter would follow and then back to dreaming you could please take a nap on the sidewalk behind you.

"Cheer up! You forgot that you love this!" Nick, my cameraman murmured, his head still hidden from my view behind the camera on his shoulder. Still, I looked in his direction, my mouth fell open for a second. Jesus, he was right. Why was I complaining... when had I gotten used to all this spectacle to a point that I forgot that I was so very lucky. I was doing what I loved, just as much as the people I interviewed. How many people studying journalism and obsessed with music would actually end up where I now was. My own music show for a year now. Okay, online, not regularly on TV, but still financed by a network. But this was the 21st century and streaming numbers were probably more important to some than their own grandmother's life, yeah... I should have been more grateful. And while I stared at Nick, I could see a grin in the corner of his mouth, even though most of it was hidden. And then I grinned as well and interviewed Harry Styles. You know, casual Friday, some might say...

Somehow Nicks comment had saved my night. I forgot about the fact that I was tired, or that I had promised my mother three days ago that I would call and had never gotten around to it. Or that my ex-boyfriend was currently at the Great Barrier Reef with the girl he had told me nothing was going on with while we had been dating. It was me and people passioned about the art they were making, which hyped me enough to actually feel like I was doing a pretty good job of asking the right questions at the right time.

And still, Nick just hissed a hasty "Step it up!" at me when he realized that we had a pretty good chance at interviewing BTS next, even before I realized that they had gotten so close. I had definitely realized they were here somewhere, the screams had gotten so loud when they had stepped out of their car. But - bam! - suddenly a stern-looking woman pointed towards me and seconds later they were standing in front of our camera. Matching suits, polite smiles, super professional and me just in awe. Some clever editor would later play it up, as if I had actually gone into stand by mode, inspired by the fact that I turned around to the camera the next second and pretended I had lost my shit, before snapping out of it moments later, turning around again. "Oh my God. It's BTS, how are you guys?" They were professionals, but so was I.

I got two questions in before the woman tried to rush them away from me, but I pretended to not hear her and got one more question out there before we said our good-byes. Jimin waved at me like a toddler and for some reason, it made me "dawww". He didn't hear, but Namjoon, the last to move over to the next interview, did, turned around again and chuckled, before winking at me. I blinked. And then they were gone.

"Did Namjoon just low-key flirt with me?" I asked Nick, who was still recording me. "You wish..." he said, which made me laugh, and I nodded slightly, eyes closed as if to say "Guess so". Nick stopped recording and I dropped my shoulders again. Man, who was I to complain about fake laughing when I could go from quirky-hyper-music journalist-me to energy-saving mode in about five seconds? Checking my phone I realized it was time. I had to head inside, otherwise, there was no way I would make it backstage before stuff got really really hectic there.

The award show was alright. We didn't actually do any interviews backstage, the truth was that these things we so incredibly organized that there was no time to waste on the sidelines, no time for a chat unless it was pre-planned. This was all to show how much fun I was having, probably to be edited into a montage or something. And I mean... I was having fun... but then again it just sometimes felt a bit goofy, jumping around, clapping for people when they came off stage as if we were friends. After a while Nick and I had found a good spot where we weren't in anyone's way, could see the side of the stage and still had a monitor close to us that was showing us what the audience on tv saw. I finally relaxed a little after Nick had decided that he had enough material. He had set the camera down, and we were having a beer while watching the rest of the show.

It was towards the end of the show when the evening's hostess was giving a little speech about how much fun the event had been, followed by a montage of scenes from different celebrities getting ready to the red carpet. Nick said something about the fact that the turn around time for the clips was pretty fast, considering that some of this had happened only two hours before and I just made a "mmhh" sound to answer him when I was really checking my phone. Moments later he had kicked my shoe with his and I looked up confused. For a second I thought he was upset because I had not given him proper attention, but he gestured towards the screen and for a good reason. Because I was on there. Seemed like the behind-the-scene camera people had been standing right behind Nick when I had interviewed BTS. They showed my little "OHMYGAWD, IT'S BTS" moment and I had to smile, then there was a hard cut and next thing I saw was the whole "Did Namjoon just flirt with me?"-moment, just from a different angle. And with the knowledge that the whole audience inside the hall saw the same thing as well. I could hear the laughter and then while there was some sad applause, the live camera was in front of BTS, zooming in on RM... who was still looking up at a screen and seemed a bit overwhelmed, before acting all nonchalant about it towards the camera. The other boys were laughing their asses off, Hobi looked as if he was about to fall off his seat. Namjoon played the coolness up, even more, nodded into the camera, holding a hand up to his face, mouthing a "call me", before looking a bit uncomfortable the next second, maybe because he couldn't believe himself that he had just done that. And then they cut back to the hostess and I only realized that I had moved my hand in front of my mouth when I turned to Nick. He had laughed through the whole thing as well.

Okay. So, nothing about this whole bit had been particularly clever or as funny as everyone was making it out to be. Award show humor. What was funny was that everyone had seen my childish comment. Including the person, it had been about. It was harmless after all and so now I started laughing as well and I didn't stop for a good while. Yeah, I was a bit embarrassed. But at least they had made me look more relatable than desperate and Namjoon had taken the joke well.

When I got to my hotel room - several glasses of sparkling wine later - I realized my best friend, back home in New York, had texted me.

Lauren: [12:13 AM] So who is the new boyfriend? Me: [12:42 AM] If everyone who ever winked at me once was my boyfriend... Lauren: [12:47 AM] You'd still be single! ha!

Jason stans just use roy as a prop up for him and jayroy is an extension of that, everyone agrees that n52 ruined Roy and starfire's characters. And if you dont go by RHATO characterization, then you agree that roy is 7-8 years older than jason? And ofc if they are the same age then where does lian come from

i mean...i guess? i tend to rely on a mix of pre-52 and new-52 characterization because i like it better that way. in my version, roy has lian, his personality is mostly the pre-52 kind where he’s a good responsible dad but with some of the fun outlaws rockabilly-ness thrown in, and he’s older than jason (not that it makes much of a difference tbh, i mean my aunt is eight years older than my uncle and nobody seems to notice. plus, i mean...it’s jason todd. it’s not like roy’s going to be taking advantage of his younger age anytime soon). as for the “jason stans” using roy as a prop-up for jason, i don’t really indulge in that so it doesn’t have much to do with me. it does suck though and i’m sorry that it happens

talon: the talon was pretty much immune to most damage besides head-cutting-off, was already killing a bunch of soldiers who were helping the guy damian was supposed to protect, portrayed as a necessary thing. should be noted he did verbally empathize with the talon as in like both of us were raised to be assassins or something

various league of assassins guys in a training sequence in b&r #0: it was training (I assume it was like special b/c it was a test and they don’t always go all out, since we lose more assassins this way) and it was what he was ‘supposed’ to do

should be noted that in R:SoB, he does contextualize his childhood as “what was done to him” (link), which is clearly acknowledging that like. he didn’t roll out of the womb as an assassin. but that’s also the comic he takes the most personal responsibility of his past actions in the league in, like he’s convinced he has to go and undo everything that he can undo. i think him viewing it as something that was done to him might work in conjunction with him articulating that killing people is wrong (but ofc he still puts a ton of responsibility on himself). I think when it’s just the way that things work, he doesn’t need an internal justification of ‘this stuff that happened to me was unfair’, but when he starts thinking of it as wrong he has to think about why he was doing these things he now thinks are wrong. granted like. he stops killing people long before he articulates why it’s wrong to kill people. it’s complicated and will probably require more thought on my part :P
