A Deserved Gift by Cardinal Rose Newkirk dreams up the perfect plot for springtime. Most of the crew beg off taking part, because its an unnecessary risk, but regardless the victory is sweet and enjoyed by all. (in wartime, even Petty Revenge requires Pro Revenge tactics)

Cracking the Vault by Sierra Sutherwind Reminded of his younger days, Newkirk gives himself an inconveniently timed challenge - much to the dismay of Hogan and Schultz. They support him, but tbh they had their hands tied, what else could they do? (bonus: Schultz and the OCs in this fic go through some interesting developments, but they arent the focus in this category)

Once Is Enough by Abracadebra Newkirk is recruited as the reluctant accomplice in Marya's latest wild scheme. He shows off his skills at bluffing, snarking, and griping >:) i like how the more stressed he gets the funnier he gets haha

Autumn Winds by Fear-Of-The-Cold Newkirk's attitude toward human connection over the years, as it is influenced by his family and the world. we get to see a pre-Heroes POW Newkirk

The Assassin by lonewolfette9846 Newkirk is given the most important job in the war. And he has to do it alone. He does his best to keep his cover, and in the little time he has strategises his next moves. A very tense story - and that tension takes its toll on Newkirk. I like how methodical and tactical Newkirk comes across in this, despite the mission not being remotely in his experience.

Have you had a chance to read Tim drake: robin yet? It’s been… uh… divisive to say the least

Of course it's divisive -- a loud, obnoxious chunk of "comics Tumblr" doesn't actually like or read comic books, they just make up their own bullshit so they can whine when canon doesn't match up to it and feel superior to the pro creators without having to put in any actual work.

I liked the first issue, personally. The art takes some getting used to but the stylization is fun, it's very expressive and suits the tone well. The idea of Tim taking on a villain who uses some kind of superpower to play out classic mystery stories is really fun and suits Tim perfectly -- the kid was a canon member of the Baker Street Irregulars at 13, he's always been a mystery nerd. I'm intrigued to see what happens when/if they start taking on stories that don't have animals as the central antagonist, and the foreshadowing was very rewarding.

I like the setting, too. It's a new, unique part of Gotham, and I like the emphasis on how Tim cares about his community -- that one panel where he describes all of his neighbors is one of my favorites, it's so true to his character (and in stark contrast to some of fandom's dumber misinterpretations of that character). It's a shame that two of those characters were apparently introduced just to die but still, it's a nice touch.

And y'know, as much as I think Darcy could've gotten a better introduction -- she comes out of nowhere if you skipped Future State: Robin Eternal -- I like her. I think she's cute and fun and clearly some variety of queer in addition to her hearing aids. I like that she gives Tim a supporting character to shoot the shit with who's in the know but isn't an established hero who'd feel like they were playing second fiddle -- unlike, say, Rose Wilson and Connor Hawke over in Damian's series, or Cass in Batgirls. Kinda the same way I felt about Bernard being his closet key; when it's a supporting character who already exists primarily in his orbit, it feels less egregious when the focus is fully on Tim. (So long as they still feel like characters with lives outside him, of course, which imho Darcy and Bernard both do).

TL;DR -- I like it, it's different but it's fun and I'm looking forward to seeing where it's going.

okay season 2 titans 2018: 3/10

my god. i think i’d rather shoot myself then watch this again.

pros: i think they COULD have done something realllly good with deathstroke as an antagonist. and i loved every minute of Jericho. rose was interesting and fun although i think more could have been done with her. i am interested in the direction they’re going with jason’s character- it’s very clear that he is just a fucked up kid.

cons: my god there’s so many I’ll try to be brief. i assume trigon Will be back THERES no fucking way that one lackluster episode was the answer to all of season 1’s build up i refuse to believe it. and if it is that is the LAMEST fucking shit ever. starfire’s conflicts could genuinely be its own season- just let them have a space arc. what the fuck was dick’s prison break arc what was that. what was the point of that. who wanted that. not me. i do NOT like the handling of batman/bruce wayne he’s way too prominent in this show and im not fond of his characterization. this isn’t the titans this is essentially a batman spin off. they just do not know what to do with beast boy. i want to gouge my eyes out every time hawk and dove are on screen and i fucking HATED their relationship issues. they’re toxic for each other whatever they’re not even the fun kind of toxic. the whole drama of the old titans was interesting but just butchered so badly. slade wilson was butchered so badly.

the first half of the season probably could have earned a 5/10 but the last half sucked so bad. so so bad. i would not willingly watch this again except for the parts with Jason. and even then sufficient motivation would be needed. it felt like they had half good ideas and butchered them. and also too many storylines.

i think they’re biggest issue is adding in too many characters. and then not knowing what to do with the characters.

Chloe's Grandma Rose is a breast cancer survivor like me so I identify with her easily and was happy to see her life moving in a positive direction. Chloe's newfound friends, Cal, Ben, Archie, Erica, and Matt, often get together to play Dungeons and Dragons and have welcomed Chloe into their group. Jake is still around but the relationship he has with Chloe is complicated. I enjoy the way these characters continue to develop throughout this story. Matt's brother Ethan is a surfer and his best friend was the deceased Aaron Gill. He along with Matt and Chloe found him dead in his hotel room with a note in his hand. I will admit I read the synopsis and knew suicide would be mentioned in the story but had hoped it would be a fleeting moment and the death would be classified as a homicide much sooner. The police did not even look at any other evidence so it was up to Chloe and the others to prove it wasn't which carried it much further into the story. As a mother who lost an adult son to suicide many observances about Aaron and his behaviors and stressors hit my heart like a sledgehammer forcing me to put the book down to strengthen my heart and to skim certain sections. That being said I knew he was murdered and I had to know whodunit so I focused on the clues, I had a culprit in my sights, and was happy that in the end, I was right. The reveal was tense but the takedown was great. I find the theme of a cannabis café fresh and new. Ms. George takes the opportunity for Chloe to explain the way cannabis is used clearly for its medicinal benefits and the relief it can provide. Chloe also explains how she prepares the cannabis to be used in her recipes. Three recipes are included after the mystery. I wish I had a Sparkling Canna Gria to get me through the tough times while reading this story. A High Tide Murder is a well-plotted and well-written mystery with great characters that are engaging and entertaining. I am excited for this series to continue to see if the ending foreshadows what Chloe is going to face next. *Note - Suicide references could trigger survivors or their family members. Canada: Ageing Workforce, Boosting Immigration

Like many developed countries, Canada is facing a labor shortage aggravated by an ageing workforce. From 2016 to 2017, the number of Canadians aged 65 and older rose 18.3 percent, the second highest increase in 75 years. In the country’s working-age population, more than 1 in 5 individuals are now close to retirement. When those trends are combined with Canada’s declining fertility rates, it hardly comes as a surprise that many parts of the country have a large number of open jobs. For 2022, for example, Ontario reported 372,000 job vacancies—double the number from 2020.

One response from the Trudeau government has been to encourage and welcome new immigrants. In 2015, the Prime Minister announced a goal of accepting a half million new immigrants per year by 2025. The government is seeing significant progress toward that objective: international migration has accounted for almost 96 percent of the country’s recent population growth—the highest since 1957. A recent report from Statistics Canada suggests that this growth should help the country meet future labor needs.

Most visibly, Canada has been active in welcoming people displaced by conflicts like the Russia-Ukraine war, the crisis in Afghanistan, the recent earthquakes in Turkey and Syria, and violence in South and Central America—all in line with both its stated immigration goals and longstanding pro-immigrant tradition. In the case of Afghanistan, Canada is on track to welcome at least 40,000 of those who fled the Taliban takeover in May 2021. In the case of Ukraine, Canada has extended a program offering to temporarily resettle Ukrainian families—a program that has already approved 600,000 applications.

That’s not to say that Canada’s generous immigration policies have been painless or universally supported. The growing numbers of asylum seekers and legal migrants help to address labor needs, but they can also lead to challenges in housing, infrastructure, and transportation. Provinces like Québec and Ontario have issued warnings about the rising costs that inevitably accompany the influx of new immigrants and asylum seekers.

A small, but growing chorus of critics has called for Roxham Road—the famous unofficial border crossing between New York and Quebec—to be shut down for asylum seekers. During President Biden’s recent trip to Canada, the two governments announced that a loophole in the 2004 Safe Third Country Agreement, which prevents Canada from turning away migrants at unofficial crossing points, would be closed. In other words, even with Canada’s enduring reputation of being open to newcomers, political leaders see the need to bring order and rules to the process.
