#psychiatric meds

The ADHD meds have created a new sense of "holy shit" to my life. They rate with the mood stabilizers.
I do feel like I'm one big psychiatric pharmacy sometimes. Like...brain...BRAIN...why? But then I'm just grateful that I can take a little pill to help.

When I say I want pysch meds to be less stigmatized I don't just mean people should be allowed to talk about the ways meds helped them, or talk about how they used to have depression and then meds cured them. People need to be allowed to talk about the way medication has harmed them and hurt them, about going off of meds, about the way the system forces meds onto people and doesn't care about their well beings, about side effects that most neurotypical people would find horrifying, about not wanting to be on meds, about being on meds but not magically becoming normal. The neurodivergent/mentally ill experience should not be watered down to make people comfortable, and especially not to make people comfortable with the largely neurotypical run medical system that often victimizes us as much as it helps us.

Hey did you guys know that a lot of psych-meds (SSRIs, SNRIs, et al) can cause tooth decay? Because I didn’t until a dentist mentioned it to me; no psychiatrist or GP prescribing me those drugs over the years thought to mention it
(I’m not a dentist but I was told that because they cause dry mouth, that increases your risk of tooth problems, particularly if you’re taking them for a long time)

I genuinely believe the fact that so many popular Imogen/Laudna fics are no-powers AU is, if not the main cause, at least a factor in why so many people resist or even are hostile towards any interpretation of Imogen that isn't largely sweet and harmless. Like, write the fic you want, but Imogen in particular is someone so fundamentally shaped by her powers that to write a no powers AU is to write what is essentially a completely original character who happens to share her name.
I think it's made even more obviously a factor because many of those fics try to reconstruct aspects of Imogen's personality by giving her anxiety or agoraphobia (or both) but the problem is that those are purely mental illnesses, rather than something that both gives her powers and penalties (again, the X-Men problem). Some real-world mental illnesses cover the symptoms of Imogen's abilities, but none cover the abilities themselves. It's quite literally a removal of agency: they take away what she can (and frequently does) do with her powers, leaving only the negative effects on her behind while eliminating the negative effects she can have on others. No wonder there's this overwhelming push to woobify her from that corner; they've utterly defanged her and are now crying that other people who can still see her fangs (and even like them) are talking about them.
And the thing is, for all I can be negative about fanon, it is, ultimately, fine - so long one can either keep it separate in one's mind from canon or else remain in a particular fanon sandbox. But unfortunately people leave the sandbox, and when other people respond to the canon Imogen, who as of episode 81 (RIP CRStats) has voluntarily used Detect Thoughts/Open Mind 60 times and has openly stated her intent to use it specifically to know what her party members are doing in advance and theoretically prevent it, the fanfic crowd is utterly unable to react to this intelligently. The idea of Imogen they have is sweet girl with severe anxiety and a goth girlfriend. The problem is this construct exists only in their favorite fanfic writers' domestic fluff modern AU no powers setting. And frankly, I'm not interested in talking about that warped mirror version of her when I could have all the fascination, complexity, glory, and agency of the real thing.

Is it a hot take to say hard line anti-psychiatry is definitely reactionary and anti-science and bad

the mental health clinic i'm going to tomorrow to manage my psych meds has pretty much exclusively dogshit reviews, which is to be expected because it's a medicaid clinic. even in portland you can expect that the american healthcare system is actively trying to kill poor people, nobody hates a poor person like a mental health professional. HOWEVER since i don't actually want to develop a rapport with a therapist or say anything true in my sessions or do anything except get my prescriptions and get out, here are the BEST THINGS i've learned:
providers are so overworked they will never remember your name or your patient history
you will have a different therapist every time
you will be in a different room every time bc no one has an office
the clinic will refuse to schedule you for therapy more than once a month if you "seem functional"
former employees attest that every therapist quits within 4 months because it's such an unrelenting hellscape
former employees attest that all the policies are made by a clinic owner with no background in trauma-informed care who fucking hates high-maintenance patients and wants to get you out the door as fast as possible
former employees and clients alike attest that the only thing anybody here cares about is avoiding on-paper malpractice suits instead of providing patient care
THE ONE SAD THING I'VE LEARNED:
the main psychiatrist is catholic. and hates medication.
THE GOOD NEWS:
i am a heterosexual cisgender white woman with good heterosexual cisgender friends who loves to work hard for money and wants to settle down someday with a husband and have babies and knows SO MUCH about jesus because i love jesus and He's going to heal me :)
THE BAD NEWS:
i am protestant.

I just love insanity whump so much because there are two EXCEPTIONAL options to start with:
There are whumpers who can take advantage of the situation, maybe even mAke someone ill or brainwashed, but there's also underlying mental illness, and its just so tragic and messed up...
And in this.. the whumpee's worst enemy can just be themselves.

do you guys ever stop and think about beard being arrested and….being forced into detox while in police custody. bc lbr. it was like 2000 in kansas, and the police aren’t exactly known for helping or caring for those they arrest, especially addicts. beard being handcuffed, going through withdrawal all alone and without any proper medical care.,,,yeah.

Your why I support forced meds and forced hosptalization
If they did that to you youd stop worshipping demons and realize your not a boy or a they your a girl with autism who needs help
I think you're the perfect example of why forced meds and forced hospitalization are a threat to human rights.

Psychiatric medications are so funny. They're always like "We invented this medication for seizure disorders but it turns out it also works really well for bipolar disorder. We have no idea why" and "We invented this medication to control high blood pressure and it's actually pretty bad at that. It does stop nightmares for people with PTSD for some reason though"

secondhand trauma is so fucked up because you have these horrible doom feelings and you dont even know why. youve been told the world is scary and you believed it and it was never something you made your own mind up about. its just part of life. and how do you argue with parts of life
