To be completely fair to the Dungeons & Dragons fandom, groups actively making themselves miserable by adopting house rules that emphasise aspects of play they dislike, then blaming it on the game isn't something that's specific to Dungeons & Dragons, nor even to tabletop RPGs. Think of all the casual board-gaming groups who play Monopoly with a bunch of house rules that are practically calculated to make the game take three times as long to finish (e.g., removing property auctions, cash on Free Parking, etc.), then constantly complain that it takes forever to play.

The Fantasy Trip: Wizard, MicroGame #3 by Steve Jackson, illustrated by Clark Bradley, Metagaming, 1978
TIL: This dragon is not rearing on its hind legs like I thought when I first saw it almost 50 years ago. There are three other wizards at the bottom of the chasm casting the summon, illusion, or image spell. The transparency of its incomplete body suggests it isn't real. I was too busy playing this for hours to focus on the bottom edge of the art.

Kitbashed this Everest together for Lancer a while ago, and having recently played through Titanfall 2 again, decided on the basic BT look after I couldn't decide how to paint him
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tried to mimic the official Everest design I've seen floating around, but I'm partial to the blocky style head so I stole that from a Battletech Highlander
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Actually a lot is from Battletech, the legs are an Assassin and the Torso is a Black Knight. I love the Vladof guns from Borderlands so I found one of those for my assault rifle, and the arms are from the free mech set Filamentio released. I think that's most of it...

I feel like you may either get this question all the time or not at all, so here goes:
if I'm really not interested in narrative investigation / mystery, but *super* interested in large-scale political intrigue (think nation scale), would Eureka be a good fit for me? I definitely don't want to push the game into being something it's not out of respect for the folks working on it, so I'd love to have a better understanding of what it's good at. :)
I’m not 100% sure what you mean by this, so I hope this is still a helpful answer.
Eureka is about investigating mysteries at a personal level, meaning typically a single point-of-view. It is normally about people with no political power, but if it was some kind of inter-department conspiracy investigation that “goes all the way to the top” or something, I think Eureka could still work with a tiny bit of tweaking so long as the actual gameplay is still carried out by each player following their own characters through it at a personal level. I think that’s the most advice I can give you. If you haven’t already read Eureka: Investigative Urban Fantasy, it’s free, so you can go ahead and do so and that might give you a better grasp on if it would work. We would appreciate some payment, but it’s not mandatory, especially if you end up deciding it isn’t what you’re looking for.

Hi Hi There.
coming out of a cave, having been inside for several days, your characters finally meet in the sunlight, here at the foot of a waterfall we see a large river downhill that must pass through some town.
near the cave, on the left side of the map there is a path that can be followed in case you do not want to follow the river, this path makes its way through the forest.
