How to Cure* Yourself of Being a Picky Eater**
by JewishDragon
Step 1: Be me, a same foods picky eater autistic.
Step 2: Have a family member (who doesnt live nearby) be an enthusiastic chef. Loves to cook for people and experiment with cooking. Just throws shit together.
Step 3: Go 2 decades being wary of visiting this relative because you're an extremely picky eater and feel very ashamed when you stay at this relative's house.
Step 4: Get your first summer internship away from home and get housed by this family member who lives 10min from the internship
Step 5: Make a silent vow to Get A Good Grade In house Guest (a very reasonable thing to desire), since you are staying rent free. The vow includes
Clean the dishes after dinner without being prompted
Empty the dish washer without being prompted
Do your own laundry
Pick up after yourself and take out the trash before trash day!
TASTE, HAVE JUST ONE BITE, OF EVERYTHING THIS RELATIVE COOKS
Step 6: have a 3 month summer internship become several years as you get a full time job (and then START YOUR PHD) in the same town. While you now pay a smidge of rent, THE VOW CONTINUES
Step 7: Profit
(Expand your pallet, Discover what flavor profiles/textures you like and dislike with more nuance than ever before. Be able to go out to eat with friends and family without the anxiety over wondering if you'll be able to eat, or have to order from the kids menu as a 20+ year old. But overall, most importantly, it becomes easier to try a new food)
*JewishDragon does not guarantee any part of this method, this method will not work for most people for many reasons.
**This post is made in good humor. I am not claiming picky eating is something to BE cured. I am just telling the story of my journey of being a picky eater. I am still not an adventurous eater. For example: It took me 6 years from my first making the vow before i was brave enough to try a small drop of ranch/caesar style dressing on a single piece of lettuce. (I REALLY wanted to get a good grade in house guest at a weekly nerd gathering!) (also texture is a HUGE issue for me that i cannot expect to ever be "cured".)
(I also am a huge samefoods autistic, i can eat the same thing for two weeks and the only reason I would switch to something else for the next week or so is I ran out of the Thing)

do NOT shame people, especially autistics for liking "plain" food. a lot of autistics us too need to eat same/safe foods and usually they're not spicy or anything like that. they're usually sweet or plain with a bit of salt for us. some people can not handle spicy stuff. some autistics don't like it sensory wise, and that's okay. when Bug and other parts are sensory seeking at times we go for spicy food. and that's okay. stop judging and making fun of peeps who don't eat spicy food

People like to get experimental sometimes, I get it. Just…leave my safe foods out of it. 🙏🏻😬
It’s that time of year again for some of us: big gatherings with high expectations around food, sensory issues getting in the way of enjoyment, and a higher than normal likelihood of unsupportive/judgmental family members who just don’t get it.
Ahh, the holidays.
Well I can’t do anything about your family dynamics, but I can send you good vibes and solidarity. May the amount of unwanted commentary be minimal, may your plate be big enough to keep your foods from touching, and may your preferred form of cranberries be present!
(Image description:
A 4 panel cartoon by Autball.
1: Half panel, with a close up of two figures facing each other, one purple, the other an aqua to light green gradient, indicating they are ND. Purple says, “Oh, I’m just so happy to have you home! I even made your favorite…” Aqua/green thinks, “Oh nice!”
Bottom half panel, same scene. Purple has a raised eyebrow and continues, “…with a little twist.” Aqua/green hangs head with closed eyes and thinks, “Oh dammit.”
2: Two figures (one purple, one aqua/light green) stand facing each other with a kitchen counter (white with dark gray countertop) between them. There is a baking dish on the counter. Aqua/green looks distressed and asks, “Why must you always mess with my safe foods?” Purple says, “Whaat?? You like bacon, and you like mac & cheese, so I figured you’d be okay with bacon mac & cheese!” Aqua/green replies, “That’s…not how any of this works.”
3: Same scene. Aqua/green says, “Okay. You like pickles, right?” Purple says, “Yes.” Aqua/green says, “And you like ice cream.” Purple replies, “Uh-huh.” Aqua/green asks, “So does that mean you would also like ice cream with relish in it?”
4: Same scene, except now Purple is removing the baking dish. Smiling, Purple says, “Okay, okay, I get it.. I suppose that means you’d rather I didn’t do the cranberries-in-the-sweet-potatoes experiment I was planning for tomorrow?” Aqua/green smiles and replies, “Please no.”)

It's so funny how my cat looks at me like "I- she's so cringy" when I got all jump-y and exited about pasta (my safe food) as he doesn't literally do the same with his wet food he has every single day.

Let’s make the extra effort to include our “picky” comrades with food aversions so they can enjoy themselves, eating food that they like, and we can enjoy their company.

curious question: what does autville look like?
a curious question indeed!
it's a very foggy morning here in autville. the many trees are still holding onto their lush summer greenery, but they'll soon turn to the glorious golden colors of autumn!
I am sitting on the window perch inside one of the town's cozy stone cottages, which I call my home. my cottage is the perfect distance between the bustling town hall in the center square and the quiet orchards at the town's edge. the cottages in this neighborhood are close together to minimize those pesky lonely feelings...while still allowing for that sweet, sweet sense of ample personal space.
some autville residents live together in shared cottages, and some live more solitary lives, often in the company of (sometimes several!) animal companions. as I type this, my own cat is currently napping right in the middle of my bed. feline companions are plentiful in autville, perhaps because many of us believe that cats are pretty heckin autistic themselves...but that is a topic for a separate news bulletin.
however we choose to spend our days as individuals, we as town residents of autville frequently gather for community events like our weekly same foods feasts at the pavilion (I usually bring macaroni and cheese!) and special interest roundtables at the town hall, during which we take turns sharing wondrous fun facts about whatever we're interested in.
autville does not exist in isolation, of course. there are plenty of accessible modes of transit into the nearby hustle and bustle of all those more neurotypical realms, if that's your thing!
...it's not really my thing, though. I prefer to spend my free time researching disability studies at the endless library, perusing rotating exhibitions at the museum of special interests, or lounging about and stimming freely in the meadows...weather permitting, of course.
anyway, I thank you for this question, dear reader! cartography isn't one of my special interests, but I'm sure I can find a friend in town to create an official map of autville...

I swear people always say "well you don't know what like to be hungry then" and "thats privilege!!" because you can't eat certain foods and not because you are allergic but like because of sensory issues , only being able to eat safe/same foods or even having arfid . That make noo sense! I don't know how that equals "privileged" to you , some people also have parents who buy food but not same/safe food for them and can't eat the food that is brought.
Like I even had an ex once that told me that I should be "happy " and "stop whining" and "just eat the food" even though I just can't eat certain foods , some food just makes me gag and feel sick ..even my family thinks this and has since I was a kid that I just need to be an adult and accept that "Sometimes you just have to eat what you gotta eat " or "do what you have to do" no you not understanding here , its a part of my needs not me being "immature" or "childish" damn
Not know if I have Arfid but have similar symptoms (?) , Can't comprehend those people's thought processes who say those things above tho..

I wish food places would remove the age restriction on children's meals. I'm a picky eater with a small appetite. I'll happily eat a little bowl of tomato sauce pasta and maybe a tiny brownie that tastes virtually the same wherever I go.

Why did I buy a whole bunch of making dinner food when I could have bought a whole bunch of "the same instant comfort food over and over again"?? Now is not the time for Making Dinner Food.
