• Tomura has never had enough experience with cooking to feel like he’s good at it.

• If it’s not at least close to one of his samefoods, he’s very very hesitant to try new things.

• You’ve been working with him to slowly get more and more vegetables into his diet, which he actually happy for. He’s been feeling a lot better, even with the baby steps he’s been making.

• Early examples of him trying to cook for you usually end up with the two of you ordering a pizza after putting out the fires and/or opening the windows to air out the smoke.

• He really likes to watch you cook though. Maybe it’s just an excuse to spend time with you, but you don’t mind either way.

• He’s very sensitive to smells, but loves when you use things like garlic, onions, and scallions.

• He loves to stand by the pans while things simmer, just watching things slowly cook and stirring if you ask him to. He does the same thing with the oven if you bake or roast something.

• He was nervous at first when you asked him to help you chop vegetables. He said he didn’t know how to hold things to avoid cutting his fingers, so you looked up some videos together on how to properly cut different vegetables.

• Once he got used to it, he now excitedly asks to chop and peel things when you’ve got your hands full with multitasking. He really likes how useful it makes him feel.

• The only thing he won’t cut up for you is peppers, just because he’s nervous about getting stuff in his eyes. He’ll even do onions once you show him how to cut them to avoid letting out the fumes that cause watery eyes.

• Tomura likes to put on music in the background if he’s not wearing headphones. Just to give himself something to listen to.

• Things are rarely ever fancy enough to warrant properly setting the table, but he likes setting things out.

• Tomura’s favorite foods usually have aspects of sweetness and/or crunch to them. One of his all time favorite meals is a tomato basil soup with a grilled cheese.

• He does like some spice, but it usually to be contained in something so that it doesn’t get all over his cracked lips.

• Tomura does tend to savor his food. One of the side effects of the small period of time he spent without a home are that he doesn’t take things like food for granted.

• It takes him a while to warm up to food that’s really outside his comfort zone. He usually has to see you make it a few times before he’s willing to try a bit of it.

OH BOY DO I

so dot is the most obvious choice. there is no universe in which she is not autistic to me. this is one of my strongest dot headcanons actually and one of the main reasons i enjoy her as a character. there are so many reasons for this i could go on endlessly but i'll just list a few big ones here

her extreme passion for her interests at a disregard for almost everything else & her ability to self teach those topics (not to mention her interests have to do with computing)

her difficulties with food overlap a lot with food sensitivities autistic people often have, also her latching onto donuts as a sort of samefood after finally trying them once

the tendency to wear loose, comfortable clothes and more recently she has complained while wearing tighter clothes (the orange academy school uniform) so it's not just that she prefers loose fabric, she also is put off by the alternative. girl your sensory problems

irritable outbursts when struggling to articulate herself/make herself understood

her connection with kanuchan (tinkatink) felt really neurodivergent to me. she wasn't offput by her behavior, even after stealing her prop mic, and was immediately able to understand her when no one else could or was willing to. not sure how to articulate this one right now but i hope you see what i mean

her tendency to sit cross legged and lean over herself reminds me a lot of my personal autistic tendency to need a pressure/weighted feeling while i sit or have body parts touching

social exhaustion, the need to be alone sometimes even when she cares

the list genuinely goes on i have to stop myself LOL

as for other characters,

so for liko i'm more loose about the headcanon, it's definitely more of me projecting than her being overtly autistic in canon but i still think it lines up if u wanna view her that way. i'm autistic and i personally relate to liko a lot becauseee

she is giving hyperempathy autism to me. the way she is overly empathetic and compassionate to her own detriment and yet still has to have her hand held through articulating & dealing with that or putting the logical parts of empathy together

the way she absolutely fucking Explodes with excitement sometimes

the way in which she relates to cats, and her whole thing about having a hard time getting other people to understand her. these two things go hand in hand

there's something neurodivergent about her trying to connect with sprigatito by studying her and writing notes about her behavior lol

while this is kind of just on the account of her being an anime character and a protagonist at that, liko's facial expressions and body language can be pretty exaggerated sometimes which reminds me of my own body language, i'm cartoonishly animated in real life often LOL

so like basically dot is so obviously autistic to me it's like breathing but for liko it's kind of a hc i apply to her for projection purposes & fun but i think it's reasonable

and lastly so i'm not just talking about solely liko and dot for the millionth time,

ORIO!! honestly we don't even know that much about orio but the one episode where she was helping pokeball lady i forget the name of fix her machine. the really narrow attention to detail/seeing the smaller parts instead of the bigger picture. also her expertise in engineering contrasted with her struggling with tasks outside of that (like when she was trying to sew holes in the brave asagi and for the life of her could not do it so she called murdock for help lol)

and actually one more - while i don't necessarily headcanon amethio as autistic, i think it's a fun headcanon/au idea to not only give him a redemption arc but an autism unmasking arc at the same time. representation for all my repressed autistics out there. in my mind

Speaking of potatoes and fantasy worldbuilding and the impact that they have on a culture: You discussed how potatoes free a society from a lot of things that grain imposed. Including how potatoes are pretty much ready to cook/eat right from being grown. That had me wondering about potatoes in various worldbuilding projects which leads me to this: Is it as easy to turn a potato into a food item that will keep, potentially for months or years, as one can with wheat (see: Hardtack/etc, for an extreme example). Or is that actually an advantage of wheat over potatoes? Because your post kind of makes it sound like once a society gets potatoes, why would any peasant choose to keep growing wheat? Or is that the point, they really *wouldn't* choose to keep growing wheat?

I think modern society's uses of the two are pretty good illustrations. We like wheat, and we also like potatoes! Bread, but also french fries! Beer, but also vodka!

So it's not always an either/or choice: Homesteads that grow for their own tables tend to have their fingers in a lot of different pies, like livestock, dairy, poultry, field crops, fruit trees, and vegetable crops. This is partly an insurance policy: If one crop doesn't make it, maybe another will. Maybe it rains so hard your potatoes all rot in the ground, but your wheat finds a way to survive—or the storm is so violent your wheat is all flattened in the field, but your potatoes were perfectly fine.

But there's also the part where we humans tend to like variety in our diets, which is partly physiological (we need a lot of different vitamins and minerals, and which ones we need can shift with the circumstances) and partly psychological (because we can get really tired of having to eat the same damn thing over and over and over. Yes, samefood crew, we exist, but we're also statistically rare.)

But if you had to choose: If you intend to eat what you grow and you've got limited land and equipment, potatoes are the hands-down winner. It's really easy to plant a pound of potatoes and get five pounds back at the end of the season. Depending on storage conditions, you can keep them for several months.

However, if you want to earn your living by selling your crop for cash, it's a little more complicated. Potatoes, though lovely, are also demanding; they are prey to literally dozens of problems that range from "potato is being eaten by an insect" to "potato is being eaten by a fungus" to "potato did not get enough water" to "potato got too much water." Even when your potatoes are technically edible, they might end up harder to store, harder to turn into food, or just plain ugly, which makes people less likely to buy them.

Also, and maybe this is just my personal perception from trying to pick three acres of potatoes by hand when I was 13, harvesting potatoes is a pain in the ass. They grow down in the dirt, so to get them out again, you have to physically dig them up and shake them apart from chunks of earth. I've never harvested grain by hand so maybe I'm just ignorant, but to me that's a lot of bending, kneeling, crouching, and scrabbling through the dirt. Like, harvesting 1 potato plant? Delightful search for buried treasure. 10? Wipe sweat off your brow and feel very satisfied with yourself. But the year I was 13 we harvested at least 100 potato plants. It was the year we studied the Russian Revolution in school and I felt the peasants had a definite point.

(And then they weren't good enough to be sold as food crops. They stayed in our garage, a giant pyramid touching the roof, for half the winter. We ate potatoes every single day until my brothers campaigned for an end to it. My parents donated 10,000 lbs of potatoes to the local food bank and my dad bought a potato picker at an estate auction the following year.)

Wheat does not make a great home-consumption crop these days, since it takes a lot of work to process into flour. In the last decade I've seen some affordable home flour mills, and if you have a combine harvester that's actually doable, but when I was a kid, the nearest flour mill to us was 1000km away. Without a combine, you still need to thresh and winnow the grain. It's a whole thing.

On the other hand, if you have the tools and facilities to process it, wheat is generally simpler to grow, easier to transport and sell, and the straw it leaves behind* is a useful byproduct. And while I do love eating potatoes, and you can technically make cake and bread out of them, I, like much of the rest of the world, prefer to eat things made with wheat flour, and am also fond of other grain products like rolled oats, rye bread, and multigrain bagels.

(*Sidenote: Straw and hay are different things. Straw is the stalk of grain like wheat or barley. It has minimal nutritional value and is used for bedding and insulation. Hay is a nutritious blend of cut grasses and plants that are fed to farm animals instead of, or in addition to, access to pasture they can graze in. In case that's useful.)

In British history there IS a whole huge thing with the Agricultural Revolution where land use transferred from smaller peasant farmers growing food for themselves, to larger farmers growing cash crops to feed a mostly-urbanized population, which was part landlords kicking people off their land so it could be used differently, and part peasants seeing factory jobs in the city as a welcome escape from the backbreaking labour of farming. While I think the landlords shortchanged their former tenants, and the urban factory owners were horrible to their workers, I think we also need to remember that the peasants who said "Fuck this hoe, I'm off to town" had a very valid point.

she keeps every rock, flower, marble or what ever you bring her. she has old police books with pressed flowers you gave her, the rocks are in a jewelry box.

when you start to freak out and have a breakdown she’s sorta at a loss to help but in a split second she runs and grabs your weighted blanket and puts it around your shoulders while getting you your favorite drink. it all depends on you and how you deal but she’s quick to make adjustments

non verbal moments? she will help you make little cards to show your wants and needs and other information.

angry? ripped your shirt in anger? banged your head against a wall? tore some hair out? she will try to help you calm down as best she can and then patch you up. she’ll take safety pins and pin your shirt. she’ll give you an ice pack and some pain relief medicine. she gives you kisses

~Jervis is really good at making various snacks and treats for his teaparties,

~and if you really are sensory seeking, you're allowed to touch anything that catches your interest,

~sometimes Jervis will even prepare random yet interesting decorations, wanting to see whether or not will that item catch your interest,

~Also if you like crunchy food, then Jervis makes sure you get as much of it as you'd like,

~if your sensory seeking makes you crave physical contact, you get all of it,

~you can sit close and lean on him, you can mess with his hands, trace his face,

~Jervi's favourite form of physical contact is holding your hand and squeezing it, ^^

~and if you like getting your hair brushed and played with, then that also happens a lot because that's the second form of physical contact Jervis simply adores,

ohohohoho let's see:

Headcanon: Runaan froze up on an early mission because he misjudged the parameters and got out of his depth. His hesitation had a heavy cost, and he carries the consequences of it to this day. All his extra training, and even the trick weapons and enchantments Ethari gifts him with, are meant to help him handle the unexpected because he's just not good at getting caught off guard - he has to be on sentinel at all times, or he'll moonstrider in the headlights again.

Headcanon: Runaan has several taste/texture sensitivities, so he samefoods to avoid (yet more) surprises that may put him off the required nutrition to power a body that works as hard as his does.

Theory: Runaan showed a lot of opening and shutting fists when he was under stress during S1. I believe he's stimming to try to relieve his overwhelming tension.

Theory: Even though Soren was the human soldier who dragged Runaan to the dungeon, they've got some things in common (including autistic headcanon status), and given the right circumstances I feel they could come to an understanding. That understanding being - sometimes the system is rigged and you're just fodder, and it's better for everyone if you cut (your binding) and run. Soren's ahead of Runaan on the breaking free bit. Maybe he'll help the assassin to find a new way with a Sorenism or two.

At the end of the day, everyone who looks at Runaan sees what they want to see. That's why there are so many different takes on him. The autistic label I gave him is just for fun, but I see what I see. I see what I always look for when I look at a character: myself.

i've been meaning to outline the eating habits of the main wolf 359 characters. specifically, what do they eat and drink, what do they enjoy, what are their kitchen sins, how do they eat, and why. this is going to be a combination of canon, implications, and my personal read on them. let's get right into it:

his view on eating is utilitarian to the point of reddit-ness, and he'll often go without meals to get something done or to prove a point (see: Succulent Rat-Killing Tar, What's Up Doc). his palate is a very "get what you can out of whatever you can" approach without considering much in the way of taste or texture (seaweed coffee is his invention). HOWEVER! hilbert has one prized treat that is his achilles heel/autism samefood: Pecan Pie (see: Mission Mishaps Cold Turkey). i think it's got a unique texture, and a comforting smell that meshes with his suppressed desire for family and safety well.

LIEUTENANT RENÉE MINKOWSKI

she definitely enjoys fruit, or she wouldn't've cryogenically sealed a Braeburn apple (which are excellent for baking or dehydrating, btw) and brought it to space (see: What's Up Doc). she's also a planning type, and i think an efficient and tasty meal that involves the preparation and presentation of a fancy yogurt bowl is a favorite of hers and a dietary staple. minkowski is highly conscious of table manners, although that slacks a bit on the hephaestus, because she's eating across the table from hilbert and eiffel, for god's sake. still, clean and organized is her food philosophy. she owns possibly the only tupperware collection on the planet that includes every matching lid. the wine has almost no canon basis, and is mostly just a nod to voice actor Emma Shierr-Ziarko's own love and knowledge of wines.

kitchen sin: she thinks a clif bar counts as a real dinner if it's a weeknight.

CAPTAIN ISABEL LOVELACE

lovelace's favorite food is appetizers for the whole table, a team pizza party, a big awesome-smelling potluck, or anything meant to be shared. for her, eating is a casual and (more importantly) a communal activity. the social engagement from a loud brunch will nourish her just as much as the food does. besides that, i think she likes chocolate with nuts in it (e.g. snickers, chocolate covered almonds, rocky road ice cream, etc), but one of her favorite desserts is probably a strawberry milkshake. maybe it's a way to make up for all the protein shakes and high-efficiency smoothies (that taste like wet cement) she has to chug on account of the intense way she lives and works.

kitchen sin: she is a vulture if anyone else is cooking or eating. "you gonna eat that?" and picking off searing hot pans and baking sheets. she's really just curious but she never asks until its already burning her mouth.

COLONEL WARREN KEPLER

ok, the drink is a given. it's even on his official wolf 359 store merchandise. he likes the feel of it in his hand. but what does kepler eat? when does he eat? in private, obviously. his job is an exercise in restraint and perception, and he is his job (see: A Matter of Perspective). monsters under the bed don't need to eat, and they certainly won't be that vulnerable in front of a superior. but he's still a person, so i struggled a lot trying to figure out what he would crave. fish tacos, biscuits and gravy, and a loaded chicago hot dog were all floated, but the only meal i could picture kepler ordering where anyone could see him was lamb with mint sauce. it's expensive, recognizable, difficult to cook exactly right, and almost bloody.

kitchen sin: he will go out of his way to make you feel bad about what you're eating no matter what it actually is. he doesn't even have to say anything, he'll just glance at you or shift his posture slightly.

DANIEL JACOBI

this is a guy who loves to snack (see: Time To Kill. pringles: popped). he likes crunchy, salty snacks a lot, but it's more about the activity than the taste. that doesn't stop him from ritualistically complaining (see: Mission Mishaps No Complaints). he takes his time eating, but he doesn't pay much attention to it, which is why the longevity of a slushy is a favorite of his. jacobi lives off road snacks, but will find a way to complain about the points of a michelin star. he just likes bitching! the stinky cheese (see: Need To Know) pictured is a baked Camembert, because it's my post and i get to pick the cheese. Camembert is one of my personal favorites, but it can be fairly pricy and is a pain to clean up, which doesn't matter to jacobi (goddard company credit card please!)

kitchen sin: he spends an excruciatingly long time on any meal to the point where, if he had his way, they'd bleed into each other by taking an average of one bite every 15 minutes.

DR. ALANA MAXWELL

the drink pictured is a rockstar energy, but whatever legal(ish) stimulants can get inside her body the most effectively is maxwell's favorite. she eats a lot of takeout (see: Mission Mishaps Happy Holidays) because it's quick when she forgets to eat all day and it's tasty and she has the pay grade for it. she grew up in a tiny nowhere town that was in all likelihood at least partially a food desert, and her family dinner table warranted a restraining order, so i think in her adult life she tries to get as far away from that as possible. this often manifests in trying all the outlandishly spicy things she can get her greasy mitts on, because she is both inquisitive and masochistic. fuego takis are pictured because theyre a staple snack that jacobi will buy for her if she promises to share (she's lying and will eat the whole bag)

kitchen sin: she allows the nearly-empty cans, bottles, bowls, and bags to sit out and fester. once every 2 weeks she sets a timer and rushes through dumping it all into a giant black trash bag so that she doesn't get an infestation of ants again.

OFFICER DOUGLAS F. EIFFEL

and the "F" stands for food! eiffel definitely spends the most time talking about food. he's hungry! since his eating habits are so prominent in the show, i figured a compilation of his food and drink moments in canon would work a little bit better than my own personal extrapolation. excerpts from Limbo and Boléro were omitted.

kitchen sin: while some people might argue that pineapple on pizza belongs in this spot, i am not so judgemental. i just want him to eat from dishes that aren't visibly dirty.

Talking about my autistic headcanons part 1 out of ???

(shit on my headcanons, get blocked. I mean it.)

Luffy:

He canonically has a samefood, meat. Other characters have foods they like and are associated with, but not nearly to the same degree as Luffy and his meat.

He also canonically says the same thing every time he picks up a den den mushi (phone for non fans). Reads like a social script to me!

He always admits he's going to be the pirate king, even at times where it may be better to hide it! He also never changes up his wording while doing this. (Most OP characters don't, but he is the most obvious about it so sssh)

His logic and thought process are considered very unpredictable in-universe.

In the orangetown arc, there is one scene where Nami thinks "don't tell them we are pirates" and he just immediately goes and says it. Big mood for me.

He also never considered that he had a father before his grandfather brought it up to him. That seems like the exact same thing I also overlook, tbh.

That being said, I headcanon him as a big hand flapper. I further headcanon that because of his devil fruit power, he is able to move his arms in ways nobody else can. Strangers that don't know about his fruit find it very uncanny valley.

He has 100% unintentionally hit one of his nakama while handflapping. "Sorry Zoro."

He's also a big pacer. I don't make the rules.

Autism is 100% a known thing in the OP universe I decided. Law and Chopper imply that medicine is quite advanced, so I don't see why it wouldn't be.

That being said, Luffy never mentions he's autistic. When asked about some of his symptoms, he just replies that thats something he does. He isn't ashamed, he just doesn't get what the big deal is. Somebody looks at his medical records for reasons, and he's like "yeah. Didn't you know?"

Extremely sensory seeking. Will do anything to have a new sensory experience.
