How to World Build Prt 1

Everybody talks about how difficult it is to create or “build” an original world that doesn’t look like every other Euro-Anglo Saxen whatever that everyone else is creating so as someone who has four plus years of fantasy world building experience and was raised by two parents who specialized in cultural anthropology, I’m going to do a brief crash course on how to create a world that will look totally iconic. 

*Disclaimer* Fantasy means that you don’t have to follow basic geography but if you’d like to have a *theoretically* scientifically accurate map for sci-fis or for a scientifically accurate fantasy this is an exact instruction manual.    

Geography 

I’ve only heard this once or twice in the writing community but seriously if your writing start from the ground up, meaning location. 

Of course this is a rough, rough draft that I did in the space of roughly ten minutes on a windows paint app. But really all you need to have a successful map is a rough understanding of Geography. Tectonic plates, where islands and mountains form, anything you could find with a quick you tube binge. Once you have the basics next comes landmarks. 

Your mountains should follow near the tectonic plates, your volcanoes too. Your rivers either come from the ocean or from ice caps on the ocean. These rivers can create lakes-which is a favorite location for colonies or civilizations. I’m going to be focusing on the five circles for the rest of the post. This is where are hypothetical civilizations are going to take root. Each circle had been placed in a unique location, on a river, an island, in the middle of a desert, in the mountains, or an arctic location. 

Basics

  First I’m going to talk about the red circle on the top of the map in the desert. In the red circle is the city of Vizkl. I’m not going to imagine the city or the style, this city is a blank patch in my mind. All I need to know now is; where do they get their water? Where do they get there food? And how do they produce goods? This is where your history needs to come in, if your like me you’re going to make a timeline from the beginning of written history to the present time but you don’t need that to write a book. I’m going to look at modern cities we have that are settled by the desert. So for example...the Gobi Desert? 

The citizens of the Gobi desert live in a mostly cattle herding, nomadic lifestyle with the occasional farmer hidden in the underbrush. I learned all of that from a quick google search, i don’t need to know the intricacy of their culture unless I specifically want to mirror their lively hood but today I’m creating my own culture. 

So city of Vizkl is less of a city and more of a clan. They live in a closely knit faction that are nomadic. They raise *insert fantasy animal here* to eat and to use their hides for tents and clothes. So now I know what their clothes and houses are like in a rough picture. You don’t need to know anymore past that for now. I’m going to go over one more but I think you guys should get the idea. 

The purple circle is over the island nation of Rathynaku. There are load of island I could focus on, but I’m going to base my island off of Maui! 

  We all know about Hawaii, but let’s forget everything about it for now and focus on the mechanics of the island. Maui is a lot more populated than the Gobi desert so this is where a little bit more research comes in. Generally the citizens of Maui are categorized as Polynesians, I researched just the basics but generally speaking, people of Polynesian background were generally fishers and ate from the local flora. They used the flora to create their buildings and they wove clothes from plant fibers. That one required a bit more research cause you know institutional racism and colonization. The people of Rathynaku use plants and fish in their day to day life.

Of course building a culture is so much more than looking at the geography but this is creating the building blocks of life in your world. This is all excluding incorporating technology into your culture or even supplying basic cultural marks that make an actual shape instead of a nebulous figure.
