Leatherback Sea Turtle (lovingly referred to as the watermelon sea turtle 'by me'🫶🏼): The leatherback sea turtle is the largest turtle in the world, measuring up to 6ft in length and weighing between 750 - 1,000lbs. Named for their tough rubbery skin, they are the only species of sea turtle that lack scales and a hard shell, and have existed in their current form since the age of the dinosaurs. They are also accomplished divers with the deepest recorded dive reaching nearly 4,000 feet—deeper than most marine mammals.

Okay, we all read that? Good. You’re probably wondering why the fuck someone would question whether or not we have a turtle at the aquarium that’s real. It’s because he’s a 98 year old lazy Alligator Snapping Turtle. He can hold his breath for almost an hour. The old man is not active, and he shows us no interest in being active.

Behold! The “fake” “plastic” turtle in question!!!!

But seriously, if you are ever at a Zoo or an Aquarium and have questions about the animals or their welfare, you can always ask any of the staff and they are always happy to help educate you. Do not assume you know the whole story.

Sibling Secret

Amphitrite: "You know, I feel like my husband prefers everyone over me. You too, even in your current state."

A lil bit of sadness for Amphitrite & Poseidon. Since Nerites doesn't appear in any other myths (that I know of), and is still a shellfish, I think he'd be who Amphitrite would confide in all the time.

And shellfish Nerites is worrying over his older sister of course

In the myth of Nerites and Aphrodite, Nerites refuses to go with Aphrodite to Olympus because he wanted to stay with his sisters and parents. Nerites values his family greatly, and I'm sure the Nereids are the same. And with him being a lover to Poseidon, though since Greek mythology isn't exactly the most consistent in when events happened when, but I am going with that Amphitrite married Poseidon after. Because I think Amphitrite would initially think Nerites turned into a shellfish because of Poseidon, adding to the reason she fled from his hand in marriage.

Anyway- this is just a bummed out Amphitrite with her husband being gone and pursuing others so much he forgets to give her some attention. She's just lonely and didn't know who else to confide in. A palace and open ocean can feel suddenly too big if the one who's supposed to be with you is gone for so so long. I'm sure her confiding in Nerites is comforting, since he was a lover to Poseidon, as it is difficult, as the two seemed more active in their bond compared to her and Poseidon.

FUN RANDOM HORSE BREED TIME

Super small lil horse breed known as the Banker Horse is a semi-feral/feral horse breed that lives on the barrier islands off the coast of North Carolina!

They're not considered to be indigenous but are protected and managed by the National Park Service and currently the estimated population of these horses is 400.

They share ancestry with other Colonial Spanish horse breeds, and genetic markers indicate the share a common ancestory with both the Paso Fino and the Pryor Mountain Mustang.

While there isn't a specific source of these horses, the biggest theories is that they swam to shore when ships wrecked in the nearby shoals, in a region known as the "Graveyard of the Atlantic" due to how many ships its claimed.

The Foundation for Shackleford Horses has set up a studbook for establishing the Banker horse as its own horse breed. It is registered as a critically endangered breed with the American Livestock Breeds Conversancy.

Sure, I can tell you some stuff! There's seven extant species of sea turtle, and the green sea turtle, the turtle in the post you're referencing, isn't even the biggest! That would be leatherback sea turtle, and it can weigh up to 2 000 lbs (900 kilograms)!!!! Imagine!!!

They're massive turtles, up to 6.5 feet (2 meters) long too! Most specimen are not that big, the average leatherback is supposedly "only" 850~ lbs (400~ kilograms), but the fact that they can reach such sizes is incredible! Other facts, hmm... well, sea turtles can hold their breath for several hours, apparently up to 7 hours when they're sleeping! And six of the seven sea turtle species are unfortunately threatened or endangered, largely due to human activity, pollution, overfishing, unnatural lights, climate change, etc.. Most sea turtle species live about an "average" of 30-80 years, but there's outliers, naturally. I say "average" because most sea turtles die very young, only few freshly hatched sea turtles make it into adulthood! OH OH speaking of hatched sea turtles, their sex is determined by the temperature around them!! I think this is the case with all turtles and tortoises! Eggs exposed to warmer temperatures produce females, and eggs exposed to cooler temperatures (not like, cold, though, that would kill the eggs!) produce males! This is one reason why climate change greatly threatens sea turtles, global warming may lessen the number of male turtles!

The Sea Turtle in the Dolphin Enclosure

Once upon a time a sea turtle grew up in the dolphin enclosure. He swam and swam and swam because that's what all the dolphins did. He leapt from out of the water with everything he had but somehow, he couldn't make the same twists and spins the dolphins could. After long days of being a sea turtle in the dolphin enclosure, he would retreat to the small stones where the zookeepers would stand to rest for the night.

The dolphins included sea turtle in every game, every sign of affection, every meal. But somehow, it seemed like sea turtle was always just too tired to be in their enclosure.

He didn't want to dissapoint them or let them know how much the dolphin enclosure tired him so. So he kept swimming and leaping and treading water until one day he snapped.

"Can't you see that being a sea turtle isn't easy in the dolphin enclosure! I'm tired of dolphin games and meals and doing all I can to make myself fit in! I can't take it anymore!"

He climbed onto the stones and stayed there for a long, long time crying about his plight until a seagull who'd flown into the aquarium sat on the stones to peck at the little bits of fish the zookeeper had dropped by accident.

"Go away!" the sea turtle shouted at the bird. "That food is meant for my friends!"

"Your friends?" the seagull said, cocking its head and looking at the lilting waters of the dolphin tank.

"I may be a sea turtle, but this is my home too!"

"Your home?" The seagull said before swallowing a bit of fish.

"Well, maybe not anymore..." the sea turtle lamented. "It's just--I get bitter and mean and tried too quickly here! It's a wonder they're all still friends with me!" Sea turtle sighed. "I guess I'm just not a very good friend or sea turtle..."

"You're a sea turtle?" The seagull blinked at him.

"Of course I am!" The sea turtle exclaimed. "Isn't it obvious?!"

The seagulll wagged its head from side to side, examing the sea turtle from head to tail. "Sea turtle in a dolphin enclosure," the seagull muttered, mulling the words. "Sea turtle should be in sea turtle enclosure!"

And with a swoop of its beak, the seagull picked up a small fish and winged its way out of the zoo.

"What a peculiar creature!" the sea turtle said, gazing as the seagull's shape shrank in the blue horizon.

But then sea turtle looked around at the dolphin enclosure and found it an odd, alien place. So much water! And fish, fish, fish for every meal of the day! Not to mention just a little shelf of stone for him to rest on!

"Why, that seagull was right!" the sea turtle exclaimed in disbelief. "I'm not a dolphin at all! This enclosure doesn't suit me!"

Sea turtle lumbered up and over the dolphin enclosure walls and found a special area with wonderful sandy spots to rest, plenty of stones to stretch out and sun in, and a deep, lovely pool of water for when he wanted a swim. But most of all, he was shocked to find a whole bale of sea turtles there!

"Well hello," another sea turtle greeted him. "Won't you come in and join us?"

"I would love to but--" the sea turtle said, glancing back toward the direction of the dolphin enclosure.

"What's wrong?"

"You see, my friends are all dolphins and I don't want to make them feel like I don't love them by leaving."

The other sea turtle nodded, knowingly. "Sometimes we don't realize how much our environment shapes us until we see it from a distance. And sometimes the distance shows us how much we've been fighting against our own best interests just to fit in, no matter how much we are loved."

The sea turtle pondered the words.

Would the dolphins really hate me if I left the enclosure? What if they never want to see me again? What if they don't even want me to visit? But oh! The dolphin enclosure has made me cruel to those I love and I don't want to be the kind of sea turtle who speaks to their friends like that! I don't want to fight my environment -- I want to live in it!

The sea turtle climbed into the turtle enclosure, resolved to talk to the dolphins tomorrow about his new home.

The next morning, the sea turtle's belly was full of good sea turtle food, plenty of sun-bathing, and sand-playing, and rest. He steeled his nerves and climbed into the dolphin enclosure.

He plopped back onto the stones he used to take refuge on and found that the sea turtle enclosure had made it seem so small and uncomfortable now. He cleared his throat and announced himself to the dolphins who poked their heads out of the water.

"You're back!" They all shouted with worry and love and concern. "We're so glad!"

"I-I'm sorry," the sea turtle said shuffling his flippers. "I'm sorry for yelling yesterday. I love all of you but I also love myself, which is why I wanted to say that I've found a new place to call home. One where I can do sea turtle things. And-and I know that it's best for me to live in a place that I can be the best version of myself. P-please forgive me!"

The dolphins grew quiet. But after a moment, they smiled and nodded. "Our lovely sea turtle deserves nothing less! But can we ask--if it's not too much trouble--that you visit now and again?"

Sea turtle cried out in elation, "yes! Yes, of course! I love you all!"

"And we love you!" the dolphins replied.

And from then on, the sea turtle found that play and rest came so much easier than they ever had before. He no longer believed he was a bad friend or bad sea turtle, he was simply in the wrong enclosure.
