In the quiet hours of the night... his mind is deafening.
How I perceive Severus Snape, part 2 | part 1
Notes: Go into this understanding that to Me, Severus is deeply flawed and broke and trauma filled. There are parts of him I see as soft and squishy, covered by hate to keep Them from bruising. If you don’t like that, do not read this. Otherwise, enjoy.
TW: Mentions of alcohol abuse, drug abuse, sex, physical and emotional abuse, poor mental health, death, manipulation Please do not read if you cannot handle these topics. This part is a lot lighter than part one, though it still has a few sore spots.
Positive Attributes
𖤐 studious and driven, severus is someone to have on your side when you need information. He likely already knows what you need and where to find it. 𖤐 severus is attentive, noticing things you likely didn’t. This often leads to him giving support before needed or compensating for things ahead of time. 𖤐 severus is quite witty and funny, he’s often cracking jokes, but his deadpan tone often makes Them fall flat. 𖤐 severus is incredibly thoughtful, especially when giving gifts. He observes people constantly, and his gifts to others on holidays or birthdays are often times things that are so touching, it's staggering.
𖤐 moments of bliss 𖤐
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Negative Attributes
𖤐 severus is so incredibly stubborn. Once he has an idea to do something, well, he will not give up, even if doing it causes him personal harm. 𖤐 severus doesn’t sleep well, so he is constantly grumpy and snappish. 𖤐 severus has terrible social skills and a carefully black tone and expression. This often leads to him coming off angry, mean, or spiteful. 𖤐 severus wears his distaste plainly. It’s clear if he hates you. 𖤐 compliments are earned, to him, so you doing well or being kind to him often doesn’t come with thanks or praise, which can make him seem standoffish. 𖤐 insults are his way of expressing love and care.
𖤐 severus as song lyrics 𖤐
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Musical tastes
𖤐 severus never stuck to one genre or another. The music of her youth is that chosen from discard or discount bins. 𖤐 lots of the music severus holds dear is music that is a gift or a moment of perspective shifting.𖤐 her favourite music to brew to us, classical OR absolute rubbish noise music. It depends on what is brewing, delicate potions get the latter. 𖤐 severus owns multiple band tees, also usually discounted, all unknown.𖤐 severus gets a lot of Her love for classical music from ballet classes with Lily. Her favourite pieces spawn from duets they created or performed together and she still hums them to herself often.
𖤐 severus’s playlist 𖤐
Severus has a dynamic relationship with music, it’s typically all around him either playing in his head, him humming while working, or playing out loud while he brews. His tastes are varying, vast, unexpected and usually not the same day to day.
Severus’s clothing
𖤐 for a very long time, clothing meant absolutely nothing. Clothes were a means of covering herself and keeping warm or staying cool. It isn’t until years down the road, probably around 14 or 15, that style mattered. 𖤐 severus, after a day of ballet class, went into town with Lily to hunt down some new leotards and, on a dare, tried one on. It was tight, constricting. She loved it. Lily bought her the leotard and some tights. 𖤐 from that day forward, the pair of them would find and try on anything and everything, Lily gaining a love for baggy cargo pants and jeans, severus a love for dresses and skirts

hobbies
𖤐 severus has very few hobbies and usually things that were found to be creepy or entirely unexpected 𖤐 they can draw, often doing flowers, bugs, or creatures in the margins of their textbooks and adding art to assignments. 𖤐 severus also does ballet with lily and has for years. The two of them have done duets, individual performances, and won awards. They practice during the school year in a neglected wing that the two of them transfigured. 𖤐 severus also paints, plays piano and violin, can sing, writes long-winded essays on long forgotten topics, and speaks four languages besides English. 𖤐 the languages: German, Latin, Korean, and French.

“severus fights james and his friends because he wants to control/be with lily and he thinks james is in the way of that, even though lily just doesn't like him in that way. and james fights severus because severus is picking a fight with him/severus is bigoted. “
Hey so I was scrolling through the tl ans saw you responding to an ask. I totally agree with you that Lily is more of an important character on most of ur points. But i saw this and was genuinely wondering how you got that from the books? This is genuinely not to attack you or be rude. But I saw the canon completely differently than how you have interpreted it, and I do wonder where you get that point from? Specifically that Severus is the one starting things while James is only fighting back? And that Severus wants to control Lily?
Once again this is not me trying to be rude, and I also do not hate James. But Jkr said that James went after Severus mostly because of his connection to Lily. And in the only scene we really see, its James and Sirius going after Severus first while he was sitting under a tree by himself. I wouldn’t call two vs one a rivalry. And I wouldn’t call that Severus going after James.
Once again genuinely curious bc it seems to be a popular notion and I truly dont know where ppl are getting it from.
the moment we see james and sirius going after severus is what i meant with james pocking on severus for sirius (i mentioned that in the post)
Sirius stared around at the students milling over the grass, looking rather haughty and bored...
...'This'll liven you up, Padfoot,' Said James quietly, 'Look who it is'
James is very happily playing with his snitch, he only approaches Severus because Sirius is bored and wants something fun to do (Sirius finds fights fun- i mean he's a british teenager with family issues. it'd be surprising if he didn't find fights fun, and everyone found fights fun at school)
i didn't mean this specific scene. but, for instance, severus invented the sectumsempra curse. which is like,, very dark and torture-y. i can imagine him using it on james or his friends (without knowing how bad the spell is, like harry does with draco). i do think he wouldn't have used it knowing how bad it was, but based on being a kid/teenager with people i hate and have ongoing drama with and having drawn their gravestones and dead bodies (i also have a neighbour kid that recently did that exact thing so i'm assuming imagining the classmates you hate dying as a kid/teen is a fairly common experience), i can very much imagine severus would have made the curse with james in mind. and i think he does use a version of it in this scene, where he gashes james' face so deeply his robes splatter with blood.
also, as i said in that post, i don't think when we see people's memories, it is a completely true viewing of the past. i think it's like how memories are- biased and wavering over time. and since this is severus' memory, i wouldn't take it wholly to heart (but that is more my hc, and i don't think jkr wrote legilimency to be how actual memories work)
continuing on this actual scene (i'm reading it rn and i'm trying to focus on answering your ask but i can't help giggling at the amount of times sirius is called handsome, every line is like "sirius handsomely turned to snape", "sirius head turned, handsomely" /j) i sorts get what you mean with james picking a fight with severus because of lily, but it seems to be more for sirius' entertainment in this scene. lily asks him what severus has done to him, and james just says it's the dact he exists- which does show james doesn't really have a reason for this particular interaction, and it was purely for sirius. but he does say he'll stop if lily goes out with him- making it seem as if he is fighting with severus for lily. but i honestly think that line was more james just trying to wind her up- he knows she'll say no. james acts, during this scene, like a standup comedy act. every sentence seems to intentionally said to receive a specific reaction from his audience (his classmates). the line gives me the same vibe as a heckler at a comedy act, and the comedian interacting back with them.
one of the spells james uses against severus (where he dangles him upside down) is in severus' book of spells that he invented. so for james to know that, it means severus must have used it in the past (not sure if it was canon or not about that spell being a trend at this time or not), but severus would have used it on james or his friends previously for james to know the spell.
then what i said about severus picking a fight with james for lily, and james picking a fight with severus because of severus being bigoted/already picking a fight with him. this comes from when harry goes to remus and sirius after seeing severus' memory.
"I think James was everything Snape wanted to be... And Snape was just this little oddball who was up to the eyes in the dark arts, and James- whatever else he may have appeared to you, Harry- always hated the dark arts."
"Snape was a special case. I mean, he never lost an opportunity to curse James, so you couldn't really expect him to take that lying down, could you?"
sirius says severus picked a fight with james because james got what severus wanted (lily, but also academic validation, with james being naturally talented, which i should have mentioned in the previous post, but i was focusing on lily, not james and severus). sirius then says james picked a fight with severus because of severus' interest in dark magic (and we do see james getting furious when severus calls lily a 'mudblood', james was about to stop before severus said that). and then remus says james, in later years, only went after severus because severus was still going after him.
i didn't mean severus was starting things- more that severus was continuing things. i know they argued when they first met about houses, and i think lily then being put in gryffindor after that argument infuriated severus and caused him to see james as a threat, whilst james found it humorous and would likely mock severus for losing his best friend to gryffindor, which then their rivalry escalated from there and continued because severus was into lily and because james didn't like how severus was into dark arts/severus was already going after him and his friends.
about severus controlling lily. most of what we see of their friendship is very much severus trying to control lily. he tells her she better be in slytherin, he tells her not to listen to petunia because she's just a muggle (this could just be trying to comfort a friend, of course, but the insinuation that lily shouldn't listen to her because she's a muggle, not because she's just jealous and bitter is very weird), lily tries to get severus to stop hanging out with bigoted people that hurt her friends and severus just complains about james and remus, turning the subject to what 'she's doing wrong' instead of actually listening to her, he threatens to sleep outside gryffindor tower unless lily comes to see him, he asks for only lily's life to be spared (not caring if james or even harry, a 1 yr old, die). seems pretty controlling to me.

I think I've found my favourite line about Snape in a fanfic ever:
For once, Snape was just…a person. Well. An intelligent, awkward, antisocial, sarcastic, and guarded person. With anger management issues. Alright, so he wasn’t an altogether admirable person.

Crafting Compelling Morally Gray Characters: A Guide for Fiction Writers
Tumblr media
In literature, there is often a clear distinction between good and evil. Heroes are portrayed as virtuous and villains as wicked. However, in recent years, there has been a rise in the popularity of morally gray characters - those who do not fit neatly into the categories of good or evil. These characters are complex, flawed, and often make decisions that challenge the reader's moral compass. In this guide, I'll help you explore the art of crafting compelling morally gray characters and how to make them stand out in your fiction writing.
Tumblr media
What Are Morally Gray Characters?
Morally gray characters, also known as morally ambiguous characters, are those who do not conform to traditional notions of good or evil. They may have both positive and negative traits, and their actions may be motivated by a mix of good and bad intentions. These characters often blur the lines between right and wrong, making them more relatable and intriguing to readers.
Examples of Morally Gray Characters
Some well-known examples of morally gray characters include:
Severus Snape from the Harry Potter series: Initially portrayed as a villain, Snape's true motivations and actions are revealed to be more complex and morally ambiguous.
Jaime Lannister from A Song of Ice and Fire series: Known for his arrogance and incestuous relationship with his sister, Jaime's character evolves throughout the series, showcasing his internal struggle between his duty and his personal desires.
Walter White from Breaking Bad: A high school chemistry teacher turned methamphetamine producer, Walter's character is constantly torn between his desire for power and his moral compass.
Why Are Morally Gray Characters Compelling?
Morally gray characters are compelling because they challenge the reader's perceptions of right and wrong. They are not easily categorized as heroes or villains, making them more relatable and human. These characters also add depth and complexity to a story, making it more interesting and thought-provoking.
The Power of Relatability
One of the main reasons morally gray characters are so compelling is because they are relatable. They are not perfect, and they make mistakes, just like real people. This makes them more human and allows readers to connect with them on a deeper level. When readers can see themselves in a character, it creates a stronger emotional connection to the story.
The Element of Surprise
Morally gray characters also add an element of surprise to a story. Their actions and decisions may not always align with what the reader expects, keeping them on the edge of their seat. This unpredictability makes the story more engaging and can lead to unexpected plot twists.
The Exploration of Morality
Morally gray characters also allow for a deeper exploration of morality in a story. By challenging traditional notions of good and evil, these characters force readers to question their own moral compass and consider the gray areas of morality. This can lead to thought-provoking discussions and a deeper understanding of complex moral issues.
How to Craft Morally Gray Characters
Crafting morally gray characters requires a delicate balance of positive and negative traits, as well as a deep understanding of their motivations and internal struggles. Here are some tips for creating compelling morally gray characters in your writing.
Give Them a Strong Motivation
Every character, regardless of their moral alignment, should have a strong motivation for their actions. For morally gray characters, this motivation should be complex and not easily defined as purely good or evil. It could be a desire for power, revenge, or even a sense of duty. This motivation will drive their decisions and actions throughout the story.
Show Their Flaws and Vulnerabilities
Morally gray characters are not perfect, and they should not be portrayed as such. They should have flaws and vulnerabilities that make them more relatable and human. These flaws could be physical, emotional, or moral, and they should play a role in the character's development and decisions.
Create Internal Conflict
One of the defining characteristics of morally gray characters is their internal conflict. They are torn between their good and bad tendencies, and this struggle should be evident in their thoughts and actions. This internal conflict adds depth to the character and makes them more relatable to readers.
Avoid Stereotypes
When crafting morally gray characters, it's important to avoid falling into stereotypes. These characters should not be one-dimensional or defined solely by their moral ambiguity. They should have unique personalities, backgrounds, and motivations that make them stand out as individuals.
Show Their Growth and Development
As with any well-written character, morally gray characters should experience growth and development throughout the story. They should learn from their mistakes and make decisions that challenge their moral compass. This growth and development will make them more dynamic and interesting to readers.
How to Make Morally Gray Characters Stand Out
With the rise in popularity of morally gray characters, it's important to make yours stand out in a sea of similar characters. Here are some tips for making your morally gray characters unique and memorable.
Give Them a Distinctive Voice
A character's voice is an essential part of their identity. It should be unique and reflective of their personality and motivations. For morally gray characters, their voice should reflect their internal conflict and the complexity of their moral alignment.
Create a Strong Backstory
A character's backstory can provide valuable insight into their motivations and actions. For morally gray characters, a strong backstory can help explain their moral ambiguity and add depth to their character. It can also create empathy and understanding for their decisions.
Use Foils to Highlight Their Morality
Foils are characters who contrast with the main character, highlighting their strengths and weaknesses. For morally gray characters, foils can be used to showcase their moral ambiguity and challenge their beliefs. This can add depth to the character and create interesting dynamics between them and other characters.
Tumblr media
Morally gray characters add depth, complexity, and relatability to a story. By challenging traditional notions of good and evil, these characters force readers to question their own moral compass and consider the gray areas of morality.

A Man With a Plan (prologue)

Remus Lupin x whimsical!reader - Hogwarts Era (no Voldemort) - Soulmate AU
A/N: Hello! I've been stuck in my head about the idea of a whimsical reader (think Luna Lovegood) after reading the many sweet writings of other writers on Tumblr (specifically @ moonstruckme)! I totally ship a character like this with Remus because I feel like Remus has a tendency to overthink and get stuck in his own head and a character like this would be a breath of fresh air for him and balance him really well. Please note: whimsical does not = stupid! Rather, quite smart but people find her odd and reduce this to lack of intelligence. This is my little prologue, a sort of soulmate-esque AU - what do we think? Do we like this idea? Would we read it???
CW: swearing (cuz it's Remus 'Werewolf McSwearWolf' Lupin's POV, duh)
Tumblr media
If there was one thing people ought to know about Remus John Lupin, it was that Remus was a planner. At any given point, it would be safe to assume that Remus had a plan.
As would be typical of Remus Lupin’s luck, however, most of his plans got fucked to shit.
Example A:
As a child, Remus planned to grow up to be a wizard like his da, or a nurse like his mum. That plan was fucked to bits just before his 5th birthday when Fenrir Greyback damned him to a life of lycanthropy and a side serving of prejudice.
Example B:
Remus Lupin planned to never be accepted to Hogwarts on account of his previously stated damnation. That plan also went sideways when an owl dropped a letter into his porridge on the morning of his 11th birthday, containing an acceptance letter to Hogwarts. Remus’ da told Remus it was likely a mistake and they would rescind the offer once they learnt of his lycanthropy. Once again, plans were nullified when headmaster Dumbledore himself showed up on the doorstep of the Lupin Cottage after not receiving a response from them.
Example C:
Once he confirmed his acceptance to Hogwarts, Remus Lupin planned to be completely invisible throughout his time at school. This meant: no embarrassing himself, no bringing attention to himself, and absolutely, under no circumstances, would he make friends.
Of course, as should have been expected, this plan was fucked upside down and backwards seven ways to Sunday when the likes of James Fleamont Potter and Sirius Orion Black set their sights upon him.
Though Remus Lupin did have a plan, he was still just a boy. He’d been homeschooled his entire life due to being unable to explain his absences to muggle teachers as well as his scars/injuries from every full moon, and the village kids were quite fearful of the scarred boy. All this to say; he’d never had friends before.
So, sue him for relishing in the interest these boys seemed to have in him.
No matter: Remus could handle this. “How?” You may be wondering. By a plan, of course!
Remus Lupin would allow these two (and Peter who went about befriending the boy in a much gentler way, so let’s make it three) friends, and planned to ensure that they never learned of his lycanthropy. He’d only just made friends; he wasn’t about to lose them.
Of course, Sirius being the nosey fucker he is, James being the doting mother hen he is, and Peter being far too perceptive for anyone’s good – that plan was fucked to shit as well.
Remus, then, planned then to never let anyone else ever learn his secret again.
That plan was once again fucked by none other than Sirius Black and his unfortunate ‘prank’ on Severus Snape that could have cost Remus and Severus both of their lives, or at the very least, their lives as they knew it.
Remus Lupin then planned to never forgive Sirius Black for that horrible, thoughtless prank.
Remus was admittedly not all that sad to say that this particular plan was shot too, though he ensured Sirius suffered at least a little during the process of his forgiveness.
So, as he sat at the Gryffindor table in the Great Hall in September of his 7th year listening to his friend’s wax poetic about their different love interests or conquests that they had made over the summer (i.e., James’ love for Lily, Sirius’ many hook-ups, and Peter’s enthusiastic support of them both), Remus made yet another plan.
Remus John Lupin planned to never, ever, fall in love.
Moony, it would seem, had other plans.

Something I think most people do not take into consideration about Severus Snape is that through our interactions with him in the book, we only see him through Harry’s perspective, which means we are only ever often seeing the very worst of him, when he is in the worst moods or under the worst stress.
The moments Harry witnesses Snape lash out are the moments when he is most prone to lash out or make some kind of sarcasticly barbed remark. Even in the situations with Neville and Snape; Neville has class with Harry, so there again Snape is more apt to be more irritated and less patient than usual.
This is not at all to say that Harry is at fault for their interactions; rather it’s to say that the readers perception of Severus Snape more than likely isn’t how he actually acts on a day to day basis in the presence of other characters. Yes, other students still consider him strict and somewhat unaproachable , but not cruel and not truly frightening or abusive. Even when we do see him intensely angry with Harry or Neville the worst things that happen are the incidents with Neville’s Toad Trevor, Hermione’s teeth, and the time Harry sees his memories of trauma and abuse at the hands of his father and Severus lashes out by throwing a jar at him ( an isolated particularly heated incident).
What I mean to say is, these examples are the worst that Severus Snape is capable of; not true cruelty but heavy sarcasm and irritation. Most students’ interactions with him likely aren’t as Harry or Neville’s nor as spectacular, but are perhaps more typical of a usually strict academic environment. We are (much of the time) judging the whole of Severus Snapes character by his weakest, hardest, most difficult moments. Almost Every other character is given the chance to balance one characters perspective of them with moments of tenderness, humor, kindness or warmth from the perspective of another character. The only time we get this second perspective with Severus is during The Princes Tale. I would loved to have seen Dumbledores or McGonagalls or even the other students interactions with him like Luna Lovegood; of course because this is Harry’s story we get Harry’s perspective and that’s valid but i think it also leaves us with the incongruous idea that Snape was constantly mean and cruel and then one day decided to bloom human emotions, when in fact he has been almost different person in the presence of most other characters.

One of the arguments against Snape ( and in favour of the marauders)that bothers me the most is this one:
" The fact that Snape is the only one who despises James while the rest of the cast speak highly of him really tells you about the kind of person James was "
First off, NO
Secondly, ABSOLUTELY NOT
Idk how many of u have actually seen/ experienced bullying, but I always thought it was pretty well known that not all bullies look like ur typically intimidating roadside gangsters. Most bullies, at least the ones I've seen, tend to have a pretty solid relationship with authority figures, even being the ones most trusted/ favoured by them. They're often popular and very well liked by the general masses because they've found confidence in their abilities earlier than most teenagers, and fit into the conventional standards of beauty or being cool.
Now, because they tend to be well accepted by their peers, they make the victim of their tactics to be the oddball, something inherently unlikable coz they're different, while in reality, they're just not there yet (which is why they alone see the worst side of the bullies, they're the only ones who know what it's like to be prey to the bullies' most cruel tendencies.)
This perception of the victim is accepted by the rest of the peers, who are either trying to fit in themselves, or saving themselves from similar treatment, or just happen to believe in this too, because well, why wouldn't it be true if it's coming from the 'IT' group.
In my view this is exactly what happened with Snape and the marauders. Was his ambition to become a death eater and his interest in the dark arts a reason for the bullying? Yes, we have canonical evidence for it. Was that the only reason for the bullying? Absolutely not, we have canonical evidence for that too.
And besides, making such claims is literally gaslighting the victim, aka Snape. This is another thing which typically happens, PPL go 'oh it's no big deal, it's just a joke!' while only the victim knows the true depth of their pain, and the fact that entertainment gained from their humiliation certainly wasn't very funny for them.
Now, i wanna make something pretty clear. I wholeheartedly despise Severus Snape as a character. However, that does not mean that i ll ignore or downplay his trauma to uplift my favs( yes i do love the marauders and Sirius happens to be my fav character in the entire series). I sincerely hope that anyone spewing this argument is just trying to justify their liking for their fav fictional characters, and doesn't hold this opinion on bullying in general.

i actually don't care what r*wling's perception of beauty's like, i've never found snape's physical description to imply he was ugly, all his traits i've found hot in real life, in real people??? i've never understood finding his complexion or his nose or thick eyebrows unattractive. i really don't get how someone can say with their whole chest anyone who looks like him is ugly? it feels incredibly inconsiderate.
Exactly. It really disgusts me how people would mock Severus's features, particularly his hooked nose and crooked teeth. As someone with crooked teeth myself, which is due to genetics, I never felt insecure about them until I read such mean comments.
And it's just unacceptable how they could think that it's okay to call a hooked nose ugly, as they are basically insulting millions of people who share that physical characteristic (Jews, Middle Easterns, and South Europeans)
People need to realize that beauty is totally subjective, and if they don't find someone or something attractive, they should just keep it to themselves. You can hate on him all you want, but if you're making fun of his looks, you're just a terrible person. Keep in mind that there are real people who bear a resemblance to him.

Toa Qelsum vs. Professor Snape
Severus Snape vs. Court of Darkness Princes, Part Two
Toa Qelsum strides into Severus Snape's potions classroom, his presence commanding attention even amidst the clinking of vials and bubbling cauldrons. Professor Snape, with his characteristic scowl etched deeply into his features, looked up from his desk.
Snape: "You seem to have a penchant for disturbing my solitude, Prince Toa."
Toa: (raises an eyebrow) "Solitude? I thought you preferred the company of cauldrons and poisonous plants."
Snape's lips twitch into a barely perceptible smirk.
Snape: "You are like a meddlesome phoenix. You rise from the ashes of your duties to vex me with your imprudent requests."
Toa's expression is composed, but there is a steely determination in his eyes as he approaches Snape's desk.
Toa: "Professor Snape, I wish to discuss the recent disciplinary actions you've taken against some of the students."
Snape: "And, pray tell, what business is it of yours?"
Toa: "As a member of the school's governing council, I have a vested interest in ensuring that disciplinary measures are fair and just and safe.”
Snape: (with a disdainful sneer) "Ah, I see. You've come to play the role of the noble prince, swooping in to defend the downtrodden. How quaint."
Toa: "This isn't about nobility. It's about ensuring that students are given a chance to learn and grow, rather than being subjected to arbitrary punishment."
Snape: (his eyes narrow, his voice laced with thinly veiled contempt) "You may have lofty ideals, Your Highness, but you forget that discipline is essential in molding young minds. Without it, chaos reigns."
Toa: I do not disagree on that front. I myself am a firm believer in discipline.
Toa stands tall, his demeanor composed yet resolute, as he meets Snape's penetrating gaze with unwavering calm.
Toa: "However, there is a distinction between discipline and cruelty. The purpose of discipline is to guide and teach, not to instill fear or breed resentment."
Snape's lips thin into a tight line, his dark eyes flashing with a mixture of irritation and begrudging respect. He leans back in his chair, folding his arms across his chest in a defensive gesture.
Snape: "And do you presume to dictate to me how I should conduct my classroom?"
Toa: "I merely seek to ensure that the methods employed are in line with the values of this institution. Punishment should be proportionate to the offense and aimed at correction, not degradation."
There is a palpable tension in the air, the clash of wills between the stern potions master and the principled prince.
Snape: "You may have a point, Prince Toa. But in my experience, leniency only serves to breed complacency."
Toa: "Perhaps. But it is also true that understanding and compassion can inspire greater effort and dedication. A balance must be struck."
Their conversation hangs in the air, each word a delicate dance between two opposing ideologies. Snape's features soften imperceptibly, a grudging acknowledgment of Toa's reasoned argument.
Snape: "Very well, Prince Toa. I will consider your perspective. But know this: my methods are not born of cruelty, but of necessity. I will not hesitate to discipline those who fail to meet my standards."
Toa nods, his gaze unwavering as he meets Snape's gaze with quiet determination.
Toa: "I understand, Professor. I only ask that you temper your discipline with compassion, and remember that every student has the potential for growth."
As Toa exits Snape's classroom, his footsteps echoing softly against the stone floors, Snape's eyes follow his departure with a mixture of begrudging respect and lingering skepticism. As the door closes behind the prince, Snape's lips curl into a slight sneer.
Snape: "A noble sentiment, perhaps. But in this world, such idealism is a luxury few can afford.” (there is a hint of grudging admiration in his voice)
His gaze narrows as he reflects on Toa's words, a faint flicker of acknowledgment in his dark eyes. Beneath Snape's façade of cynicism lies a begrudging respect for Toa's steadfast resolve, a recognition of the prince's unwavering dedication to justice and fairness.
Snape: "Still, for all his idealism, there is a certain...tenacity to the prince's convictions."
With a barely audible sigh, Snape turns his attention back to the potions simmering on the desk before him, the deeper effects of their conversation lingering in the air like the faint scent of brewing ingredients.

Beyond the Veil (masterpost)
Co-written with @thedreamermusing
Sirius Black/Severus Snape. 97k.
A canon-divergent rewrite of Half Blood Prince and Deathly Hallows that follows the relationship between Sirius Black and Severus Snape. Think of it as mine and Dreamer's character study with romance.
Our list of chapters (and tiny previews where you can see we have experimented with multiple POVs) under the cut! Also a Snape and Lily prequel written by @thedreamermusing here: January 30th, 1975 (Happy Birthday Lily)
Tumblr media
Chapter 1 - Prologue
Time was a standstill in these long hallways and empty rooms, full of memories that ticked under his skin like a pulse under a livid bruise.
Chapter 2 - changing perceptions
He was tempted to laugh, laugh like a maniac, at the absurdity, the injustice, out of grief--let out all his curled up emotions in a big hearty laugh. But then again, that hadn't worked out so well for him 15 years ago.
Chapter 3 - 12 Grimmauld Place meets Spinner's End
What Pettigrew lacked in skill; he made up for in malice.  This seemingly pusillanimous creature hid within him a rusty sword whose efficiency lay not in the sharpness of the blade, but in the unnoticed poison of the rust.
Chapter 4- Enemy of my Enemy
"I brought him here because I finally see the advantages of being brawny rather than brainy," Snape smirked.
Chapter 5 - The Prince and Padfoot
"You disgust me.” rang over and over in his head like a church bell, a judgement in a confessional, a whisper that haunted his ears when he dreamed and lay awake, sometimes unable to tell the difference.
Chapter 6 - Monsters and Old School Friends
His wildness hung over him like an aura of a predator. Long-limbed, lax, but there was danger bubbling within him, an inexplicable ferocity that filled the air around him. How could anyone else not see that monster?
Chapter 7 - Circular Path
When Severus saw it for the first time, he was amazed. It was an answer to a question he had all his life, a representation of what could be built if he just reached out for the future and grabbed it with greedy hands. Now, as Narcissa opened the door with a stone face belied by the terror in her eyes, he was able to see the Manor for what it really was--a mouldering dump of pureblood affectations that concealed its decay as well as Grimmauld Place accentuated it.
Chapter 8 - Tale of Two Black Stars
Severus had known all along how to see who held the room. It was ingrained in him since he was a child. In Spinner's End, it was his father. A looming presence of overbearing violence that his mother, his magical mother, cowered against. He noticed it again in the playground - where Lily flew in air, in a burst of extraordinarily controlled magic.
Chapter 9 - The Wounds of Men
He did not know where their sudden leap of faith for the ferret came from ( “C’mon mate, I know Malfoy is a git but Death Eater is serious business!” ), but it made him feel stupid and ridiculous--it was almost as if he was back at Aunt Petunia’s, listening to her sweet talk the neighbours about Harry’s delinquency. ( “He told you he sleeps under a cupboard? A nasty, nasty lie! But the poor dear has got no one else; his parents didn’t leave us any money as well. It’s been such a strain on our finances…”
Chapter 10 - By The Light of The Full Moon
The first week at Azkaban was truly horrendous. Peter valued his mind - it was his best weapon and it helped him fade into the background. Losing the ability to think clearly, unable to tell dreams and memories apart; it was a sensation that terrified him. It felt like getting sucked into the quicksand of his resentment and anger and guilt that he kept at bay. He didn’t want to feel it. What use were those emotions, if they failed to help him survive?
Tumblr media
Chapter 11 - Face Death in Hope
Death, Pain - all unavoidable things. Things he had to play with - in hope that one day, he would be able to expiate what he was carrying.  He would not live to see it, he was sure. But he could hope. The only relief he had is that he would not die by his - Gellert’s- hand. “I am the only one who should be allowed to kill you,” he had said, a declaration, a threat - he wasn’t sure. “It is me that keeps you alive.”
Chapter 12 - Who Are You?
He was a son of the House of Malfoy, a noble house, one of the sacred 28, whose line went back generations. Their legacy was set in stone, the purity of their blood unquestioned. It infuriated him that nobody recognised that--that Potter, with his filthy mixed blood and mudblood mother--didn’t recognise that. And now, it had become so much worse. His father was a laughingstock. His mother looked pale and frightened all the time. It was up to him to bring things back to normal.
Chapter 13 - The Last Enemy (Part 1)
There were so many things that he thought were forgotten, so many memories whose life and colour had been drained away by grief and Azkaban. But standing here in the square, it was clear that they had always been there. He had felt something similar after walking into the doors of Grimmauld Place for the first time, but the only memories rising to surface there were of misery long-replaced. Here, every bit of youthful joy and love rose and flickered through his mind like stained-glass colours through snow, and every unremarkable step they had ever made on the square seemed precious in a fragile kind of way.
Chapter 14 - Shedding the Maker's Skin
“Lyall Lupin,” Fenrir said, smiling at the infinitesimal jerk Remus’ body gave. “I knew you came from money, boy. You’re his son, aren’t you?”
Remus went cold.
“Soulless, evil and deserving of nothing but death,” Fenrir quoted. “That is what he believes.”
A rage Remus had never felt before was travelling up his spine, fossilising hatred into the marrow of his bones.
Chapter 15 - Ozymandias
Once upon a time, Voldemort had looked at Snape and seen a mirror, a broken mirror of course, because Severus did not have even a shadow of his charisma, charm, looks, or skill. But even so, when Severus had come to him, an angry, profoundly gifted young half-blood brewing with hatred over his Muggle heritage, he had been so hopeful at his promise. They had both seemed to view the world in the same way; they both understood that magic was where power lay. Magic had made Voldemort immortal and then mortal again. They both respected it in a way nobody else did, and Voldemort had thought he found someone who could equal Bellatrix’s esteem.
But Severus’s weakness had been disgustingly banal. To think that it was lust of all things to claim him, and lust for a plain Mudblood at that. And now, it was the same, only for Lucius’s dullard of a wife.
Chapter 16 - In Noctem (Carry My Soul)
The idea of it makes me feel ill. He is no longer whole; his soul is distorted. He is no better than those vile creatures that guard Azkaban. He intended to murder Kreacher, who has been serving our family for generations. Our family, whose blood is pure and unbroken, has been used to destroy the soul of a magical being. It has become clear to me now. This monster will ruin us all more than any mudblood ever will.
Chapter 17 - Wings to the Kingdom
Until the time Death claims me, let the moth sing to your bones: I loved you since I saw you. I loved you when I hated you. I loved you when you betrayed us. I loved you when you destroyed me.
Yours, Gellert.
Chapter 18 - The Last Enemy (Part 2)
The window brought in a draft of salt as Remus cut up chicken for the Order lunch.  Tonks was just beside him, mashing the potatoes with zeal, her arm brushing up against his own on occasion. He felt embarrassed, it was ridiculous the degree to which any proximity to her affected him. It was the isolation of the cottage, he thought, that seemed to keep them away from the dark cloud hovering above them.  It was the rhythm of the sea, a comforting lullaby of a different world, a different life.
Chapter 19 - A Lament in the Ashes
Where is my golden palace? Where is my ivory bed? Where is the joy of my morning hour? Where the Sons of Eternity are singing, Draco thumbed through the book from the shelves in the bedroom. Years ago, he would have scoffed at the idea of perusing a book of poetry written by a Muggle.
Chapter 20 - Epilogue
“It must be nice,” he said. “To start again every time you die. You can make as many mistakes as you want and be reborn from them.”
Fawkes trilled. The corner of Serverus’s mouth lifted.

What an angry, disposable man… Nothing but a pawn … born to be damned.
How I perceive Severus Snape
Notes: Go into this understanding that to Me, Severus is deeply flawed and broke and trauma filled. There are parts of him I see as soft and squishy, covered by hate to keep Them from bruising. If you don’t like that, do not read this. Otherwise, enjoy.
TW: Mentions of alcohol abuse, drug abuse, sex, physical and emotional abuse, poor mental health, death, manipulation Please do not read if you cannot handle these topics.

𖤐 Regulus Black

Trauma
𖤐 Severus suffers from night terrors, horrid dreams that teeter between reality and fantasy. As a result, he is jumpy, often exhausted, and irritable. 𖤐 The night terrors stem from the day his Father became a monster 𖤐 The day severus showed his first sign of magic, Tobias lost it. He flew into a fear based rage, throwing Severus into his room, and Eileen was left to explain everything. 𖤐 Tobias began to drink and hit soon after 𖤐 Severus went to hogwarts, eager to learn magic to defend himself and his mother, but became a target here as well. 𖤐 The marauders, mainly James and Sirius, tormented severus throughout Their years together. 𖤐 He became a bitter and angry boy as a result. he only found solace in his friendships with lily and eventually remus, potions, and dark magic research. 𖤐 His interests gained him friends in the malfoys and other supporters. Meddling, Menswear, and Magic - by @writcraft
Harry/Draco (2022, Mature, 18.7k)
Draco Malfoy is working in a job he hates and avoiding the magical world entirely, but he really is fine. When a bequest from Severus Snape brings Draco back to a much-changed magical world, he must find his place within it and navigate his growing attraction to Harry Potter in the process.
“Being unhappy seems like a good enough reason,” Harry says.
“Maybe I deserved to be unhappy for a while.” Draco meets Harry’s gaze and there’s a raw, open intimacy in it that makes Draco’s stomach flip.
I can’t believe I got obsessed fell in love with another fic as soon as I posted my 2022 wrap up, what is even my life 💀 I haven’t written a proper rec in 84 years and actually felt a bit anxious posting this but whatever, you only live once (or until Jan 3rd when I get back to work) etc etc. As a general rule I prefer not to rec ongoing Fest fics but I guess every rule needs an exception, right? I just didn’t want people to waste any time before checking this and closing the year with a single rec feels quite auspicious :) and maybe this will prompt MA to reveal themselves to me because I’m ready to kiss the ground they walk on
I’ve said before that my reccing process comes in waves and requires the kind of passionate frenzy that urges me to write while reading the fic, which I happen to experience very rarely nowadays. This only shows how much this story has affected me. Muggle Draco, found family, meddling Snape friends, coworkers to lovers, karaoke nights (!!!), master chef Harry, this fic has everything I adore and delivers every single detail masterfully, with heart and intent. Simply put, I am blown away. Not only by MA’s singular ability to reach inside my mind and tick my every box, but also by their build up and characterization skills, coming up with charming, fleshed-out characters and a delicious brand of playful banter that made my heart beat outside of my chest from their very first interaction at the Ministry. The unrelenting banter was so excellent and entertaining I could cry - I surprised myself giggling so many times imagining their faces while delivering those lines. Gotta love a sassy couple, peak romance!
The premise itself is unpretentious yet brilliant, bringing Snape back from the dead to articulate things and push the boys plot together. His presence is clever and powerful not only from a plot perspective, but also to help us understand a bit more about post-war Harry and Draco, as they take the responsibility for his legacy by continuing his research work. There’s a lot to unpack between Draco’s fierce loyalty and Harry’s resigned determination to see this through. But despite all the emotional depth, the vignette style, smooth pacing and light tone make it hard to believe this is almost 20k; it feels both longer and shorter, I’ve read it in one breath and was left aching for more.
The characters voices are also delight - this still snarky but also civil, restrained Draco offers a fabulous POV, and learning about Greg & Luna and about “new, older Harry” as perceived by him was an absolute joy. I’m desperate to know more about this Harry with his mellow and jaded persona, a tad mysterious and off-kilt but still lovely and lovable. I found him both charming and intriguing, in Draco’s own (again, top notch) assessment, a peculiar man indeed. And Draco is so thirst for him I could barely hold my excitement omg the tux fitting scenes are so deliciously laced with sexual tension! Their chemistry is off the charts and I melted alongside Draco at Harry’s intensity and single-minded focus. Trust me when I say the M rating is sexy enough!!!
On that note, something unique that I particularly loved about this story is how organically everyone interacts, characters often breaking tension at awkward moments with incredibly perceptive gestures or lines (e.g. the conversation with Ron or when Harry helps out in the kitchen on their first date). That made me feel even more immersed and close to the characters. Something about the way they see each other, open and tentative, gives the otherwise simple exchange an interesting nuance of tenderness and intimacy. Masterful writing 😔🤌🏼
Ugh, I can’t believe I found yet another 2022 favorite on the very last day of the year. I wish MA could have seen my face as I read their fic because I am certain the feeling of pure joy and wonder was written all over it. I haven’t felt this bubbly about a fic in a long time, it was the kind of story that gave me renewed hope to see 2023 as an open canvas, a year full of possibilities. Writing this rec took me over 45 min and nothing was able to wipe the smile from my face. I can’t thank you enough, my dear MA, for giving me such a special experience today of all days. This fic will always hold a special spot in my heart for it. Happy New Year!

One of the many downsides of being an author/writer is that you start to analyse everything you read and watch. You carefully examine the character arcs and their storyline. The characters you might have liked before are the very same characters you detest.
Like how do I explain my friend that when I say I like morally grey or the 'villains' , I mean I like :-
Klaus Mikaelson
Anakin Skywalker
Jacks
Grayson Hawthorne
Aaron Warner
Jim Moriarty
Loki
Hades
Regulus Black
Kaz Brekker
Matthias Helvar
And not :-
Damon Salvatore
Conrad Fisher
Legend
Jameson Hawthorne
Rhysand
Rowan Whitethorn
Chuck Bass
Cardan Greenbriar
Severus Snape
I mean the first category is mostly of psychopaths, but they actually have some real personality and valid reasons to be evil, plus a good character development.
The second category is mostly of guys being broody and throwing temper tantrums because a girl broke their hearts or something more trivial.
Idk, I try to explain this to many people who are left baffled.
P.S.- this is totally my opinion and I am not looking for any fights. I am ready to have a nice, civilized and intellectual conversation on the perception of characters but not a debate.

HP Rec Fest - Day 21
Prompt: A thought-provoking fic @hprecfest
Truths Found in the Art of Change
Characters: Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, Minerva McGonagall, Poppy Pomfrey
Pairing: Minerva McGonagall/Poppy Pomfrey
Creator: TransRights (Duskglass)
Rating: K/G
Warning: misgendering, mentions of dysphoria
Word Count: 3,009
Summary: it begins, time and again, with a girl and a book.
Why You Should Check It Out:
From the HP Trans Fest 2021, this is a gorgeous story of acceptance and love that includes one of my favorite tropes: Minerva as mentor. This time, however, her mentorship goes beyond the academic into areas of gender identity. The scene with BAMF!Minerva talking to Petunia made my little heart sing.
A Bit of Earth Beneath the Feet
Characters: Minerva McGonagall, Remus Lupin
Creator: lash_larue
Rating: T/PG-13
Word Count: 8,400
Summary: Sometimes a woman does what she feels is right, and neither asks permission nor looks back.
Why You Should Check It Out:
A marvellous portrait of friendship and of a wonderful teacher who leads a perceptive student to important decisions and realizations, and a tribute to real-life caring teachers.
Endings and Beginnings
Characters: Augusta Longbottom, Dobby, Hermione Granger, Irma Pince, Original Character, Severus Snape
Creator: delphipsmith
Rating: K/G
Word Count: 9,000
Summary: An ancient mystery and a modern one: do they hold one another's answers?
Why You Should Check It Out:
I do love fics that probe wizarding lore, and this one takes a deep and nuanced look at house-elf history and how things came to be as they were.
It's full of wonderful details and exquisitely drawn characters, and the gentle humor clothes some trenchant obeservations of wizarding society that ring true in today's real world.
The Phoenix, Disinclined
Character: Severus Snape
Creator: prolurk
Rating: K+/PG
**Warning: attempted suicide
Word Count:** 9,965
Summary: Severus Snape survived Nagini's attack. And he's not happy about it.
Why You Should Check It Out:
A difficult—and essential—story about a difficult subject. This is all about trauma and survivor's guilt, featuring a Severus who is not at all happy at having survived.
The author builds their tale carefully and respectfully, and perfectly captures Severus's progress from terror and bewilderment, through malaise, and then to (grudging) acceptance. The details of the therapy he undergoes to get there are perfectly drawn.

I don't like Lily:
#1 Because of this Godess like personality she has. It's lile Hermione but more, more, more. And in your face.
#2 Because I really think she wasn't a good friend to Severus.
#3 Because I hate how 'James changed for Lily' even though there are a billion more reasons for James to change. That. Are. Canon. And. Fit. Better.
#4 How hypocritical she is. In Canon. Maybe in Fanon (dk, don't really see read fics with her).
#5 'You're mother was there for me when no one else was,' -Movie Remus Lupin (This is more than enough to make me hate Remus and Lily and to believe in Prongsfoot and to make me like James)
#6 James following her like a lost puppy (Fanon perception. HATE IT).
#7 She was not a good influence on James.
#8 She was not a good influence on Snape.
#9 'You're mother risked her life for you'
#10 She is so insignificant and uncraved (books) but ofc the movies hate James and ruin him and makes her the most imp character.
#11 She has no enemies.
#12 She is shown in perfect light. Even though she has flaws. Like flaws are right there popping at you. Read b/w the lines, make a timeline chart. Hear what she says. There jumping at your throat waiting for your attention
#13 Snapes' obsession.
#14 'James didn't deserve Lily' Fans when in reality Lily deserved neither Snape nor James.
#15 'James must he changed, and become good bc Lily married him' Fans as if she was some almighty power judge.
#16 'Arrogant, bullying toerag.. Durprised the broom can lift of the ground' When I look at Lily, I see a self-centred woman who is hypocritical.
#16 Hate how Jily is the himbo jock James and Intelligent Lily who deserved better.
