If you're struggling with breathing life into your OC's, try this funny yet stupidly simple trick/writeblr tag game I just came up with. I call it the 'Roast Your OCS and Make It Into a Title' tag game. 🤣

So, we've all heard of fictional character archetypes and stereotypes that are often present in fiction, right? We all know it's not good to have shallow, surface level characters that have no complexity or nuance to their personalities, because real life humans contain multitudes, contradictions, and are in general very complicated beings.

Throw all that shit out for this exercise and toss it into the trash! 🗑️ In this tag game, we're gonna be reducing all our OC's to the most basic, mundane, stereotypical/archetypal renditions of themselves and making it Fit Into a Title!

Shizen draws a curved knife from his belt and it glints as he slashes it across his wrist –

There’s red blurring through the air and a crackling sound and the Halfling crashes back to the ground, chunky crimson manacles wrapped around his wrists and ankles, glittering like crystals. A half second later, the Wolf has him pinned.

Shizen lowers his hand, still streaked with blood, and stumbles a little. There’s surprise on his face when he has to catch himself on the edge of the table. His skin is ashen. Lize is already pulling strips of bandages from her belt, her brows pinched with worry, crossbow set aside with its safety back on.

“Well,” Seo says. “This is a mess.”

1 - Who was your first ever OC? Do you still “use” them? How have they evolved over time?

I’ve mentioned her before but she doesn’t have a tag on here so i cannot find the post, but the Daemoness is my oldest OC. I still think about her, and i wrote 2/3 of her story one camp nano a while back, but I don’t really do much else with her. (apart from the time I had her beheaded as a main villain in my frostiron fic).

She’s evolved a lot. She used to be called…deep breath, we do not cringe: Luci de Monica. Originally she was a Cool Space Alien Demon Princess, with a bunch of brothers also named after various demons. Now she’s a Space Alien Demonic Empress of a massive hive-mind empire whose main driving force is finding more places to add to her empire and also harder things to fight.

Current lore is she can pull souls into her own whilst remaining seperate, an ability thought wiped out among her original kind. She later learned to swap into dead bodies, then living bodies, then to thrall living souls to her own, and now she has several million demons bound to her will :)

Visually she used to be a pretty goth lady with horns and black eyes. Now she’s an eight or nine foot tall demon lady with massive horns, big wings, hooves, a tail, and like. Full Demon Shit going on. she’s got neat shadow powers. she’s op as fuck and i do still love her.

6 - Do you have any OCs without stories? Will you ever create one for them?

The Daemoness is the main one. Her only story is just her backstory of how she came to power at this point, and what I have written is fun. I do kinda wish I’d finished it. But other than that, I don’t think there’s any story I could ever tell with her: she’s unambiguously a villain (though she doesn’t see herself as such). Any story would just be her taking over another planet.

you know what, for funsies, here's what i wrote for that camp nano thing. it's very much not finished, but i think it's fun and it captures her Vibe. (hopefully that link works. if not...lmk and i'll fix it)

7 - What are your favourite relationships between your OCs? (romantic or platonic!)

why must i choose i like both!! I think I do lean more towards favouring my romantic relationships, just because diving into romantic dynamics is so much fun to me. I like throwing drama at characters and then making them kiss about it.

An affair far more complicated than waking in a grave…

I froze as the voice reverberated around the room.

We trekked along for just a bit longer under the light of the setting sun though didn’t get much farther before a thick fog began to flood the area.

“We humans interlock our small fingers whenever we make a promise.”

This one had been called Ifta.

I wept and screamed and cursed all of the useless gods above and below, for if any existed they would not be so needlessly cruel.

And when they were so ragged and spent from their own anxiety, I’d descend upon them, twisting their bodies in my hands, peeling their skin away, and cleaving flesh and muscle from bone.

this is my first ever ask!! thank you friend :)

1. Tell us about your current project(s)  – what’s it about, how’s progress, what do you love most about it?

I only really have one project right now, besides stuff I do for dnd! and that ties in, anyway, so whatever lol. but the working title—and this is extremely mutable atm—is Sunshine All the Time. the reason it's probably not sticking around is that I came up with that title very early on in the planning stages of writing this novel, and just about everything but the names of the characters has changed. so the title doesn't really fit the plot or the themes anymore, at least not the way I'd originally intended it to. but hey, maybe I'll think of a reason why it's actually brilliant and end up keeping it anyway?

but uhh anyway. I do still plan on making a bigger introductory post for this, but I'll introduce it informally here! SATT is a novel centered around two siblings—one adopted, one biological, but twins nonetheless—who swore a blood oath to each other in childhood and have telepathic powers because of it. super creative premise, I know (/s), but bear with me here lol. their names are Aryaea and Immerlias, and said spell that they used was banned (they weren’t aware at the time) so this is a big secret. and the reason why it was banned is because it drew upon the power of two gods that were sealed away for the world’s protection. and now they’re loose again because they cast the spell. whoopsies! so the plot of the book largely deals with the aftermath of that some 44 years later. Immerlias is an elf and Aryaea is a half-elf, so when the book starts, they’ve only just come of age and are going on a backpacking trip across the world to celebrate, but the whole thing with gods and shit comes and fucks everything up when Immerlias is kidnapped by Auresmus, who is one of the gods they freed. its more detailed of a plot than that, with other plots going on besides that one, and more follows from there, but that’s all I’ll say for now. I’ll probably talk more about it later tho :)

6. What character do you have the most fun writing?

probably Immor? but I've also just recently started writing from Auresmus's point of view for the first time, and I'm really enjoying that as well. Immor is nice because he’s just a very tangible character in my brain and something about his pov just flows very easily compared to my other characters. he’s a very deep, thought-out character with both a wonderfully simple and incredibly intricate personality at the same time, and I love him a whole lot. (Immor is Immerlias and Aryaea’s dad, by the way.) As for Auresmus,,, ze’s just one hell of a guy. one idiot of a deity. gets a kick out of being powerful and mysterious but is actually pretty pathetic honestly. something about writing from that point of view is just enjoyable to me, I don’t know lmao

20. Tell us the meta about your writing that you really want to ramble to people about (symbolism you’ve included, character or relationship development that you love, hidden references, callbacks or clues for future scenes)?

oh boy this is a question where I'm almost suffering from the amount of choice I have here but also extreme object impermanence bc as soon as I read this question every infodump I have ever infodumped about this very topic fled my mind. it's also hard because I'm. a chapter into my manuscript. so I have nothing solid to go off of, just daydreams lmao. BUT I did just remember one thing I want to ramble about which is about Immerlias's character arc and his sort of personal little theme of freedom versus safety. at the beginning of the novel he's just had an argument with Immor about this very topic—we have Immor who's frankly seen some shit and just wants to make sure his son is safe in his travels, but honestly doesn't really want him to leave on this trip at all, because he's worried about his son and about protecting him from the less beautiful parts of the world he hasn't seen yet, who doesn't want to see his son's energetic, incredibly positive demeanor ripped away as soon as he's come of age because he got himself into a preventable, dangerous situation that changes him forever—and there's some trauma on Immor's end that's influencing all that too, of not wanting what happened to him to happen to his son but for entirely preventable reasons. and then we have Immerlias, who is wonderfully naive at this point in time and thinks his dad is being overbearing and controlling for the sake of it, who's just come of age and desperately wants to experience everything the world has to offer because even though he's only 50 and will live for seven more centuries barring an early death he's incredibly afraid of missing out on the beautiful and exciting things the world has to offer. and he's incredibly reckless and impulsive with very little common sense and has a knack for getting into trouble, but he doesn't see yet how any of that could be a problem, and he doesn't understand yet that the world, while beautiful, actually can be a dangerous place. and so later when Auresmus kidnaps him and sequesters him away in a tower far away from the rest of the world where war could very well break out soon along with a lot of other nasty stuff thanks to upheaval both in the divine pantheon and in the physical world, they hide Immerlias away for his own safety, and Immerlias, who's always been a very free spirit, doesn't do well in that sort of environment even though this whole tower is designed to be appealing to him and to be a safe space for him to wait out what's happening in the rest of the world, we see this parallel between the conflict he's already had with his dad and now between him and Auresmus too. and so idk if any of that was comprehensible but there's your ramble, friend :)

I've seen a lot of people talk about not getting traction on tumblr lately, especially in Writeblr circles. And as someone who's been around long enough to watch the landscape change, and watch people come and go, I thought I'd offer some tips.

Interact with other writers

This seems like an obvious first step, but a lot of people don't really take it on board. Think about the sort of reaction you'd like to receive, and then do that for others. Did you share your writing and hope someone would like it, comment on it, or maybe share it? Do that for others. If you see someone's writing and you like it, consider reblogging it and adding tags/comments to express your thoughts.

If you want to participate in ask games, consider adding a note to your bio/intro post that you're open to tags. Then share a bit of your writing in a game, and tag other people. If you want asks, remember to send asks. Don't expect something for nothing.

Be a positive force

No one wants to interact with someone who's discouraging and negative all the time. Put your best face forward! Obviously this doesn't mean there isn't room for negative posts - we all vent from time to time - but don't make it your entire personality. Show some enthusiasm for being part of the writing community, and show excitement in your work. If you don't care about being here, why should anyone else care that you are? If you don't care about your writing, why should anyone else want to read it?

Actively seek improvement

We're all learning. No one is a perfect writer, and there's a whole world of information out there. Try new techniques, try a different genre if you're looking for a change. Look to improve. And don't be afraid to ask for constructive feedback if you're unsure about something or if you're struggling with your writing.

It also helps to remember that there's a wealth of different peoples on tumblr - if you haven't found your fit yet, keep looking. Not everyone will gel with you, and that's fine. It takes time to become part of a community.

Hi writeblr!! Sooo, I've been around here since about 2014. (Yes, I am ancient.) However, I've been dormant for the past 4-5 years. Blame college and a brief stint on Twitter. Now that I'm active again, I thought I should make an updated writeblr intro so ppl know my Deal. Basically, I want to engage with other folks who write fiction (esp original SF), and that's a little easier if I have a clear post that outlines what I do. 5-book gothic fantasy epic that I'll definitely publish one day but probably no time soon! My bastard child, my wicked firstborn, my greatest love <3

Character-oriented political drama set in a pseudo-Victorian, dystopian oligarchy where everyone's heart is made out of metal. It's about coming of age and discovering queer identity in a world that is absolutely fucked. God is an extraterrestrial lesbian who gives ppl very traumatizing magic powers. There are cyborgs, shapeshifters, and morally gray women in STEM. It's tight as fuck idk what else what to tell u.

Book 1 is about achillean monarchists, and book 2 is about sapphic anarchists. There are only two genders, I guess.

At this point, I've drafted most of the books at least once. Working to refine a lot of raw material atm!

Lost Letters – Book

Aka the current active HoL WIP, and book one in the revised series structure

Length: 80k as of now; around 120-140k when the first draft is finished, I presume.

Genre: adult fantasy, gothic, noir detective drama?? um?? If you want me to frame it in BookTok terms (why?) it's a dark academia villain x villain tragic romantasy. Hrgh.

Summary: Cyborg soldier goes to college, joins a shady socialite frat, and falls in love with the jilted heir-apparent to the throne. Hilarity ensues.

(By "hilarity," I mean a militant revolutionary faction and a tragedy of Greek proportions.)

POV characters: Charles (the cyborg), Dale (the heir), and Cecelia (Charles' sister, a junior detective, the love of my life and potentially the Chosen One???)

This book is twisty and dark and immensely fun to write.

I'm about halfway through the first full draft! Hoping to share snippets and vaguepost about my children here.

Summary: The consciousness of a dead coding genius, trapped inside a spaceship, seeks a new planet to sustain their sister, the last surviving human, after the destruction of Earth.

If you're here to get wildly philosophical about gender and the myth of essential self, this is the story for you! That's why I'm writing it, lol. 🏳️‍⚧️ 🚀 🤖

This one started out as a short story (100% finished) which I want to expand.

POV: Archer Alto, the coder. Spaceship? Human? Soul?

Supporting Cast: Pandora, the last human, and Abby, a holographic impression of Archer's childhood consciousness

I'm Tisiphone - or Tiss, or Tizzy, I don't mind (she/her). I mainly write SFF, but I intend to try my hand at horror and potentially espionage thrillers in the future. I also can't seem to write anything without women being very gay in the middle of it all, so I'm leaning into it.

About me:

I'm a disabled trans lesbian from the UK

What I like seeing in books? Mysteries woven through the plot that resolve satisfyingly. Characters that bounce off each other and grate against each other in interesting ways. Weird romances that don't dominate the plot, but are a key part of it. Great character development.

Favourite books? The Locked Tomb Series by Tamsyn Muir, The Unspoken Name by A.K. Larkwood, Malice by Heather Walter, The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon. And a lot of Terry Pratchett.

Fiction I probably won't enjoy? Something where the plot is purely interpersonal drama or romance with nothing interesting happening outside of it. Literary fiction. YA.

Outside of writing? By day I'm a software developer. The rest of my time is spent drawing, playing games both video and tabletop, and playing electric guitar (badly).

With this blog I'm aiming to post writing updates, inspiration, and probably writing-related memes.

About my writing:

At the moment I'm primarily writing high fantasy/epic fantasy, with a view to trying out some more genres later on.

Admittedly a lot of the classic elements of western fantasy are in there, but I've been trying to get back to the mythological roots of creatures like elves, gnomes, and dwarves, and to present them as not being all white and vaguely British.

The world of The Tectomancy Saga is also, like that of my childhood writing hero Sir Terry, an odd shape. There's a reason for that, and we'll get to it eventually.

While my stories are currently third-person multi-pov stories, I intend to experiment on that at some point in the future.

My stories will probably all revolve around two things; a central mystery and a central relationship. I love a plot where you can pick at the smallest words and phrases, theorise about absolutely everything. I want to write stories where people have a thousand ideas about what the truth is, and each one of them knows there's a good chance they could be correct. I also, as a queer trans lady, want to write about sapphic relationships and include many people who are not cis.

My favourite themes to write are anti-authority, people breaking out of systems they've been trapped in for a long time, people being more important than power.

I'm definitely a plantser. I know kind of where I'm going, but let's see where the journey takes us along the way!

Finally, you can expect the tone of my writing to be trying to find that sweet spot between serious and dry humour that makes you groan, with a healthy sprinkling of subtle meme references.

On a bowl-shaped world suspended far above swirling blue mists, nine goddesses, witches, or geniuses, blessed their peoples with divine magics, then disappeared. Now, the world is decaying, tensions are rising, and people scramble to control the magics in order to shape the future.

High Fantasy: The classic Princess-in-a-tower-guarded-by-a-dragon story, but we see the machiantions that put her there, and what happens afterwards.

Releine Sholt is hand-picked by the heir to Tectomancy, Princess Almyra Tectus, to be her new bodyguard. The role has one ominous stipulation: nobody can ever speak to the Princess, on the threat of dire punishment.

'There was only one bed' turns out to have horrifying consequences.

High Fantasy: The saga continues from different perspectives, having different adventures, that will eventually conjoin.

Almyra vies for control of her kingdom. Ellimane tracks down two misfits who are being hunted by a rogue automaton. Releine visits hell. A new threat rises in the shadows of Versewelt, the decaying land.

Bitter exes who technically never dated are definitely not thinking about each other.

Detective Carina Choudhry has an odd - very Goth - new girlfriend, who saved her from the serial killer she was on the trail of.

Fay and the Red Kite (Title pending)

Fay Orrel, a trainee mech pilot, finds that her beaten-up old training machine holds an AI that has replicated its deceased former pilot. She tries to keep the other woman secret from the PMC that owns the mech, who would be certain to wipe the AI's memories, destroying Mina forever.

Progress: Well, I wrote the prologue and some of the first chapter. Being dabbled with!

Ask Games: you’ll see folks reblog ask games now and then, which are just lists of questions (like this one). you send an ask with one of the questions (usually sending the phrase or symbol that represents that question), and they answer it. 

Picrew Games: usually just links to a picrew with rules like “design your OC with this picrew” or “design a cupcake/fishbowl/object that represents your OCs.” (Like this one.) you can tag other writers to do the game as well, but that’s totally optional.

Find the Word/Word Search Game: for this game, you take a set of words (like...soft, run, fast, and hard), then search for them in your wip, then post the snippet that uses that word. You can either grab words from someone else who has done the game, or you can make up your own to get a game started. in the snippet post, you also tag a few other writers and give them words to search for. I usually do three or four words, to keep it manageable. Here’s an example from a diff writeblr.

Last Line Game: you post the last line (or group of lines) you wrote, then tag a few other writers to do the same. Here’s an example.

If you’re not sure who’s comfortable being tagged in certain games, you can always create a post saying “interact with this post if you’re okay being tagged in games.” I have a list in my notes doc of who has said they’re okay with it and I refer to that list when I go to tag folks.
