Netflix's Chaos Monkey: Embracing Failure for Resilience
Chaos Monkey is an innovative tool developed by Netflix as part of their Simian Army suite of testing tools. It deliberately introduces failures into your cloud infrastructure to test system resilience and recovery capabilities. Chaos Monkey works by randomly terminating instances in your production environment. This might sound counterintuitive, but by forcing failures to occur, it helps…

Noa and Mae: A Taboo Affair?
Hi, there! Kida checking in again with yet another controversy - you've been warned.
I see a lot of people on Tumblr and Reddit pointing out that a Noa/Mae (#NoMae?) pairing would be at best controversial, at worst beastiality.
I mean, he IS a CGI ape, right?
Not so fast.
I'd like to break down a few points, if I Mae (pun intended!), and address this argument. I'll be using a few of the comments I've seen on the web already to do so, on the part of the dissenters to the pairing.
1st Argument: "Planet of the Apes wouldn't show a kiss between a human and an ape. Ew."
Reply: Oh, they already have, my friend. Not in the full-blown sense, but they definitely did film Zira and Taylor kissing lips to muzzle in 1968. You can view that lovely bit here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gEp7yunwVF8
Tumblr media
I apologize in advance for impinging on your delicate simian sensibilities. #sorrynotsorry
2nd Argument: "Why would they even depict a human/ape couple? Humans and apes can't even reproduce in the franchise."
Reply: They can't? News to me. There was a Hum-Ape written into the early scripts and screen tests for Beneath the Planet of the Apes in 1970. Seems the Planet of the Apes franchise truly thought it was worth exploring back then. You can read all about that little guy right here: https://planetoftheapes.fandom.com/wiki/Hum-Ape
Tumblr media
Aww, just look at that adorable lack of face-fur!
3rd Argument: "The audience of today isn't ready for that kind of thing."
Reply: And the audience in the 1960's/early 1970's was? I didn't know we became even more conservative 50+ years later. I'll be sure to adjust my high neckline and clutch my pearls in absolute horror at the thought of all of those deviant libertines living before me. Excuse me, I must go confront my parents about this.
BUT, before I do, I do want to point out we seemed to accept an on-screen kiss between Goliath (a gargoyle) and Elisa (a human) during a certain Disney children's cartoon show in the 1990's - anyone remember that?
Tumblr media
Disgusting. I bet his breath smelled like rancid pigeon.
Additionally, we have more recent films such as Avatar, The Shape of Water - which won 4 Academy Awards, including best picture (not bad for a human and a fish-man pairing), and Beauty and the Beast.
And hey, if a living monster is not your thing, you could always opt for Warm Bodies. Think female human and male zombie. Necrophilia, anyone?
4th Argument: "Okay, fine, I see your point on the Taylor/Zira thing. But that only worked out because it was a human in a monkey suit, and we all sort of knew that. It didn't make it so strange. As for the other films you listed, well, those creatures don't actually exist so it's out of the realm of true possibility anyway. Noa is depicted as a real chimp, and him getting with Mae just makes it hit too close to home for comfort."
Reply: #Ishetho? Let's take a good look at what a "real chimp" looks like:
Tumblr media
He's so damn Chimpy.
Okay, now let's look at our leading man--er, ape:
Tumblr media
Looks like Chimpy had a love-child with Owen Teague. #shudder
As you can see, the two are pretty different. Chimpy has a true muzzle and a mouth that curves around it. Noa has a flatter, human face with an actual nose bridge and wider-spaced eyes.
And the EYES. My god. If you don't see the humanity in those baby-blues you might want to get checked for psychopathy. Besides that, Chimpy lacks eye-whites and has rounder eyes than Noa. Additionally, that pronounced brow ridge on Chimpy has thunder clouds gathering beneath it. Don't get me started on the ear comparison between the two, I'm sure it goes without saying!
Anyway, I think it can be safely stated that no chimp alive on this earth looks like Noa. He's too physically humanized to resemble an actual chimpanzee of the typical zoo variety. Thus, I would place him safely in the category of fish-man, the tall, blue cat creatures from Avatar, and those barbaric blue aliens that keep cropping up on certain ice planets in books #ifyouknowwhatImean.
---------------------
All that said, everyone can ship what they want. If you want Noa playing house with Caesar, never mind that trifling little timeline issue, you go with your fine self and write that fanfiction. Create an account on DeviantArt.com and fill it with their anthropomorphic babies who eventually grow up to be the first ape astronauts. Someone out there is going to love it and eat it up, I promise you.
For the points above, this is about Noa and Mae. They've got something, something tangible. Whether or not it becomes canon is yet to be seen.
For now, it lives on in our minds. With our inner eye, we can see it just fine.

Seduced
Summary: Sun Wukong decides to seduce Ironbull in order to make Xiaotian's training easier and because he misses the Demon Bull Family. I planned for this to be smut. It's not.
-_-
“Wait, you’re coming?”
“Kid, are you kidding? I’m excited to watch you, your dragon friend, and Red Son race!” Wukong yanked out another shirt and considered it. Hmm…maybe too much skin. He didn’t want to appear desperate. He stuck the outfit back into his closet and went rummaging again.
“Wait, Red Son’s coming?!” His successor’s excitement at the fact that he even had his phone number faded. “That’s bad news!”
Hm. He expected his first question to be how he even knew.
“What makes you say that, bud?”
“Well, what if he wins and gets the immortal peach? DBK’s armor is powered by powerful artifacts!”
“I really doubt that there’s much power in a simple metal trophy, bud,” Wukong said, pulling out a pair of jeans he hadn’t worn in a while. If he tied his hair back…oh, that would be so cute! “I wouldn’t be too concerned.”
There was a long pause, long enough that Wukong got dressed before his successor spoke.
“...metal trophy?”
Wait. Wait…
They should probably do a class on research next training session.
Well, hopefully, knowing him, Red Son wasn’t too disappointed by the lack of an actual immortal peach. Hopefully, Wukong mused as he did one last lookover and tugged his sweater down a bit strategically, neither would DBK and Iron Fan. It would make trying to talk to them and “talking” very difficult.
“I’ll see you at the race, bud.” Wukong hung up before his successor could finish processing what he had signed up for.
With his look down, he walked out of his bedroom. A few of his monkeys waited in the living room, perking up when he walked in. “So?” He spread his arms out, letting the group get a good look. “How do I look? Hot? Sexy?”
One of the monkeys hopped off the couch and out the window. While they waited, one of the monkeys chattered a question. “Why am I dressed up like this? Whelp!” Wukong clapped his hands together. “I’m gonna seduce DBK and Iron Fan!”
Well. Kinda. It was the back-up plan.
Look, he had missed the Demon Bull family. They had become his closest thing to a support system after the pilgrims had died. It was probably too early to try something like this, but he missed spoiling his nephew, and he missed the pleasure the couple had brought into the bedroom.
There was also the fact that he had a young successor with power he didn't fully understand and was worried that his successor might hurt himself with it.
The monkey hopped back in, pulling a pink rose blossom with them. Wukong took the offering with a smile before tucking it behind his ear.
“Hopefully, I can talk them out of conquering the world.”
-_-
“How pathetic…”
“You’re not pathetic, my love,” his wife lovingly said, her deft fingers stroking across his skin. He missed his fur, missed the feeling of her running her fingers through it. He even missed other fingers, gently working out knots and dirt. Right now, all he could do was savor the feeling of her. “You’re just a little dumb-”
“NIU MOWANG!”
The yell made every nerve stand on end. Iron Fan yelped, whirling around, and DBK could see the anger crystalize in her eyes as a familiar cloud lowered down. A figure hopped off- a pretty young woman wearing an oversized pink sweater and comfortable white jeans- but he was no idiot. He saw the color of her ponytail, a white bow merrily bouncing, and the tail poking out.
“Sun Wukong,” he growled out, getting to his feet.
Iron Fan hefted up her fan. “How dare you show your face!”
A hurricane wind blew through the valley as his wife launched herself at the simian.
The only warning was a sigh before Wukong kicked up.
Iron Fan gasped as her fan went flying, wind whistling around the blade, before slamming into the mountain face, left upright in the dirt. She lowered back down, and DBK leaned forward, giving her a nuzzle of apology, before Wukong was right there, shedding his disguise. Irritatingly, that pink rose blossom behind his ear looked perfect. His eyes were unglamoured, revealing their true red color, and filled with a rage that… he didn’t recognize.
“What. The. Fuck.” Wukong punctuated each word with a poke to Iron Fan’s chest. “Were. You. Two. Doing?!”
“What are you doing?” Iron Fan snapped back, taking a step back to press her back against his shoulder. Wukong, however, followed. “Why are you here-”
“I came to watch the race!” Wukong snapped, his ponytail poofing up. “I wanted to cheer Xiaotian and Red Son and Xiaojiao on, and I wanted to talk to you two, so I figured you two would be there to cheer your son on.”
There was an accusation there, and DBK knew he was falling for whatever Wukong was pulling, but he had to respond. “We were there!” It wasn’t to cheer him on, but-
“Yeah. TO HUMILIATE HIM?!”
“We just needed to teach him a lesson,” Iron Fan insisted, a bead of sweat running down her brow. She was getting nervous, a sign of wisdom when it came to an enraged Sun Wukong. “He just needed a bit of crushing to understand that his ambitions aren’t feasible, that’s all.”
Wukong gaped. After a long moment, he pressed his hands together, pressing them to his lips, and slowly breathing out. He breathed in again, held it, let it out.
DBK glanced at his wife. She glanced back, nodding to the monkey like he had any clue what was going on inside his head. Why she expected him to know, he had no idea. Nobody had any idea what was going on in his head, excluding his monkeys and occasionally Macaque, and it wasn’t like they were willing to share.
“You’ve lost your son privileges.”
“...Excuse me?” his wife said.
“This? All… THIS?” Wukong gestured to them. “This is not what good and rational parents do. This is a cry for help. So,” He backflipped and landed on his nimbus cloud, glaring them down. “Until you two clean up your fucking act, Red Son will be staying with me.”
DBK felt his jaw drop. While Wukong had occasionally stepped in to help, especially when his son was younger, he had always left the parenting to him and Iron Fan. Even if they were lovers, he had never defied the boundaries unless they willed it. This was fully destroying the boundary.
“You’re bluffing,” Iron Fan scoffed, levitating up and coming to rest on his shoulder. “My son would never allow it.” He could feel her shiver- even if he wouldn’t allow it, Wukong was strong enough to not give him a choice
Wukong didn’t respond in words. Instead, he simply raised a brow and pulled out a chair. He blew on it and a clone popped up, ready and waiting for attention. “Go to the foundry and Jade Cloud Mountain,” he said and the clone nodded, poofing up a notepad and pen. “Red Son will need a toolkit, about twenty pencils and pens each, a pencil sharpener, enough clothes for at least six months-”
Oh gods he wasn’t bluffing.
-_-
“Fine. Fine!”
Wukong paused at the listing. The rage wasn’t quelled, not yet, but he was just a bit confused at his former sworn brother’s snap.
“Husband?” Iron Fan said.
“If we apologize to him, will you calm down?”
Wukong raised a brow. “Is that seriously how you’re putting it?”
DBK stiffened, his eyes darting back and forth between him and the clone. “...no.” he said finally. He turned, and Iron Fan grabbed his horn to steady herself before he began to march off. Wukong felt his brow stay as he followed behind on his nimbus, ready to swoop in if DBK did anything ridiculous.
Soon, the starting point appeared. It looked like a combination of Xiaotian and Long Xiaojiao had won, based on the large picture of them screaming being projected. A crowd had gathered around the winning podium, except for a wide gap, where Red Son was yelling at the two. Xiaojiao looked faintly amused while Xiaotian cradled the trophy to his chest.
“-and I totally- Father!”
Iron Fan pulled away as DBK stood there, seeming to study his son as the redhead started to sputter what sounded like excuses and apologies for not winning. Then, he knelt, pressing his forehead to the tarmac.
“Father?!” Red sputtered, his hair sparking, as the crowd gasped. “What are you-”
“I am sorry for attempting to undercut your ambitions. I have not been providing you with the same grace that you have been providing me- when I…” DBK paused, as if he was looking for a word that wasn’t “buried.” He finally sighed. “When I awoke, I was placing an image of you that no longer existed onto you and expecting you to play along. I am deeply sorry for that.”
Wow. Wukong hadn’t expected DBK to actually apologize.
Iron Fan, based on her sputter when DBK looked back, didn’t either. She did roll her eyes and kneel. “I am…sorry,” she practically spat out. “I am sorry for placing such high expectations-”
Wukong quietly cleared his throat and beckoned the clone.
Iron Fan looked up and visibly paled. She returned her gaze to the tarmac. “- and not fully explaining what I wanted,” she continued, actually sounding honest. “I took some pleasure in it, because I thought that it would make sure you would never leave.” Her annoyed expression faded with each word, replaced by a look of bafflement.
…huh?
Red didn’t seem to notice the strange logic. He stared at his parents like he had never seen them before, and, yep, those were tears beading up. Thankfully, it didn’t seem like he needed to prompt anyone, because Xiaotian took a step forward.
“Are…are you okay?”
“Yes!” Red screeched, tears beading up as he looked away to hide them, seeming to forget how they turned to steam.
His successor and his friend exchanged looks. She spoke up, a sympathetic smile forming. “Do you want a hug?”
“...maybe!”
She held out her arms and Red leaned into them, never quite uncrossing his arms. Xiaotian wrapped an arm on his other side. Wukong felt his heart melt slightly as Red relaxed, just a bit. He pulled out his phone and sent a bit of cash to Xiaotian’s account, sending him a text just to be safe. It looked like they needed a friendship outing.
He turned and left, not noticing the couple watch him leave.
(When the message arrived later that night, he noticed.)
-_-
The ice cream outing had been…surprisingly pleasant, all things considered.
Neither of the peasants had said much about his tears. Instead, the dragon girl had jabbed him into a conversation about vehicles and the Noodle Boy had asked him about ancient ice cream. If they weren’t enemies of his clan, Red admitted to himself as he entered the kitchen and opened the fridge to grab some juice, he would’ve wanted to do it again.
“Good morning.”
“Good morn-” Red paused. He ran that through his mind again. The juice slipped from his fingers as he whirled around.
Sun Wukong sat at the table with a cup of tea. He looked exhausted, his fur messy, and he wore a white shirt that had definitely been bought for his father. As he raised the cup to his lips, he waved.
“Wha- HOW DID YOU GET IN HERE?!” Red sputtered, looking around for any signs of damage. It wouldn’t be the first time his uncle had surprised them at breakfast, with usually a door broken (and repaired before he left) or a window shattered. At the very least, he would be polite enough to set off a trap. But as he looked around, he realized there wasn’t any signs of a break in. “You shouldn’t be here!”
“Bud,” Wukong sighed, his voice whisper soft and cracking slightly. “Please, talk a bit more quietly. Your parents kept me up all night.”
“What, fighting?” A horrible thought occurred and Red Son reared back, letting his flames roar up. He held his fists up, very determined in that moment to defend himself. “What did you do to them-”
“My son, please, not so early.”
Relief crashed over him like a tsunami. He whirled around in time to see his mother and father walk in. His relief died when he took in their states- his mother’s hair was also messy and her neat pajamas were hastily thrown on. His father looked to be covered in-
Dots connected.
Oh no. Nope.
“I’M MOVING OUT!” he yelled, turning and marching out of the room and his parents, who have for some reason lost their minds and slept with the fucking simian. Nope! He had to deal with this crap as a young child, he wasn’t doing it again!
“YOU AND XIAOJIAO SHOP AT THE SAME MECHANIC’S!” Wukong called after him. “SHE AND XIAOTIAN ARE THERE TODAY! TAKE SOME CASH FROM MY PURSE!”
…well, Red admitted, turning and heading to his parents’ bedroom. He couldn’t resist an offer like that.
Hopefully, it was just a one-time offer.
Right?

[HELLO FELLOW COOKIE RUN FAN !!! it's not embarrassing at all, it's a very cute prompt !!]
[NOT PROOFREAD BC I AM TIRED]
Wukong with a Moon Goddess S/O
Tumblr media
Wukong had first met you when you landed on one of the beaches on Flower Fruit Mountain.
Your impact caused quite a crash, being able to be heard from his hut with all the monkeys nearby freaking out from the loud noise.
Wukong immediately went to check it out, holding an arm out in defense of the small simians behind him when he saw your form slowly sit up on the sand below you.
When he saw it was a deity, he kept his guard up of course but something about you was just so… alluring?
He couldn't keep his eyes off your features as he slowly walked towards you, bending down to gently help you up.
“Hey, you ok there?” His voice spoke lowly to you as you turned around, and it was like love at first sight if you could believe it!
He felt a boom in his chest as his eyes met yours, he swore he could see beyond the cosmos in your (eye-colored) pools.
Once you explained you were a moon goddess and you accidentally landed here from your magic, he decided he was gonna help ya!
Over the next few months, you stayed with Wukong on FFM (despite you could easily get back home, you two were just too curious about one another) and you two hit it off quite well. Whether it was telling each other stories or just sitting next to each other and enjoying the other's company.
He also found your powers and magic kinda funny, it was like the complete opposite of his, just like you.
He was the light and you were the night after all.
Despite being so different, you balanced each other quite well, you were softspoken and calm while he was just the complete opposite of that.
He loves to take you on his cloud, you both would fly through the sky and land at a random spot to star gaze.
He loved it when you talked about the cosmos, you were so passionate about them and he could listen to you talking about them for hours.
Stargazing on a random cliffside was actually the place he decided to confess, despite being the self proclaimed great sage he was BEYOND nervous.
Although it had only been about a year since you landed on FFM, he knew this was genuine love especially since he had been alive for so long.
He decided just to go for it.
Hey if you reject him, he’ll just go into hiding on Flower Fruit Mountain somewhere for the rest of eternity, easy peasy!
Wukong took a breath as he gently grabbed your face, taking your attention away from the night sky to him.
A warm smile spread across his face as he took ahold of your hands in his.
“Hey starshine, I’m not really experienced with this sort of thing. But, I think we should take this to the next level if ya know what I mean… Because I LIKE like ya. So, what do ya say?”
Of course, you liked him as well giving him a kiss in response.
"Sorry I should have asked... Is that ok?"
A big goofy smile spread across Wukong's face as he scooped you up in his arms, nuzzling his nose against yours under the cool glow of the moon.
"Of course, that's ok moonlight, it's always ok for you to do that. In fact, you should do it again."

{Eternal Servants AU} Wukong & Macaque ♡ Obedience
Art drawn by me + the OC is mine... Also the mentioned OCs and the AU itself.
My LMK AU's first ever fic, lezgooo- :D
This one's mainly just showing off the relationship between the monkeys as well as the Reader. The AU actually does feature some input from that one OC group of mine, even if they mostly operate in the background. Some of them do occasionally show up. It wouldn't be one of my universes if they had no input since they're all connected by this group of individuals... A good example would be CM from Castle's Pet, if any of my ancient old Quotev/Wattpad Undertale X Reader fans are reading this.
[TL;DR] Just your monkeys being wholesome while murdering another demon.
Tumblr media
♡ ~ Fluff ~ ♡
Seated on your throne, you sighed as you waited for your purple champion's return. You sent out Macaque to retrieve an ancient artifact a demon stole from your palace's storage. Usually it wouldn't take him long to hunt someone down. After all, he was used to tracking down any that would oppose you and would bring them to justice. However, something must've happened since he obviously wasn't back yet. This was highly unusual for either one of your champions.
'Did he get into an accident?', you thought to yourself, now getting worried.
Your blue champion seemed to notice your sudden change in mood. He didn't even need to feel it through your eternal bond, he could just tell by looking at your concerned expression. He leaned down a bit as he obediently stood next to your throne, looking at you with his void black eyes. "Master, is something bothering you?"
You turned your head a bit to look at him. "It's just... Where's Macaque?"
"Unfortunately, I'm not sure whether or not he's still occupied with the thief." He responded flatly with little to no emotion. You hummed in thought for a moment before you turned to face him again.
"Wukong, I want you to check up on your brother... Help him if he needs help, but at least just make sure he's not hurt or anything." You said firmly. The monkey in blue moved in front of you and bowed.
"As you wish, Master."
And with that, he summoned his somersault cloud and hopped onto it before swiftly flying off into the direction of where his sworn brother left to hunt down the thief.
Across the land, a giant smoke monster could be seen fighting a giant demon in green and black. It seemed like a tough battle as the demon the monster was fighting was very aggressive and wild in its attacks. When suddenly, a blunt hit to the back of the green and black demon slammed the demon in green and black face-first into the ground of the clearing they were fighting in. Its body created a giant crater. It was still alive, but just barely as it laid there motionless. It seemed like the battle already weakened it and the blow to the back was too much for it to handle.
The simian piloting the giant smoke monster panted a bit from exhaustion as he smiled darkly at the fallen demon. But then he turned towards the direction of his ginger-furred brother, who was standing on his cloud with crossed arms, and huffed. "Thanks, but I could've taken him down on my own. It just would've taken a bit."
"Master told me to make sure you weren't hurt." Wukong stated as-a-matter-of-factly.
Macaque's smile turned from maniac to apologetic as he sheepishly rubbed the back of his neck, with his giant smoke avatar mirroring his motion. "Oh man, did I take too long again? I didn't mean to make them worry... I just kinda got caught up with stopping the thief. He used the artifact he stole and it turned him into a feral titan." He added as the giant smoke monster gestured towards the other demon on the ground. That's when the monkey on the cloud quickly zoomed down towards the unconscious demon's body. It took him a few seconds, but he quickly spotted the artifact hanging from the titan's satchel. After he took it away from the giant demon, the demon's body seemingly shrunk back to its original size, still unconscious in the ginormous crater. The simian carefully held onto the artifact, as to not accidentally trigger its power, before his cloud flew back to his sworn brother. After Macaque saw the other demon's now normal-sized body, his smoke monster avatar disappeared around him as he stretched with his feet now touching the ground again.
He grinned at the ginger-furred monkey, seeing him hold the artifact the thief stole. "Guess now we also know what thing does... Did Master say anything about wanting us to kill the guy, or to place him in the punishment wing?"
Wukong shook his head in response, his face still not holding any emotion. Macaque sighed. "Well, damn... But I guess we might as well end him now than risk having him try to steal again, right?" He chuckled as he slowly walked towards the unconscious demon's body. The dark-furred monkey gave the demon a wicked grin, not expecting a response as he summoned his shadow staff. "Nothing personal, dude. Just making sure our beloved Master is forever safe and comfortable! Any who are at risk of opposing them in any way must be eliminated..."
And with that, he smashed his staff's thorny end down onto the demon's head, ending his life with one last strike. Wukong just gave the corpse a bored look before he uncrossed his arms. "Do you need a ride back?" The Monkey King asked, referring to Macaque's exhaustion after battle. He could just help the other monkey relax and calm down with his somersault cloud, after all.
However, Macaque just waved his hand dismissively as he took a deep breath. "Nah, but thanks. I'm a bit tired, but not enough to stop me from using my powers. Do you want a ride back though?" He grinned before he summoned a shadow portal on the ground next to himself. Wukong's mouth just faintly twitches upwards for a split second, but it was enough to make his the dark-furred simian chuckle in repsonse. "C'mooon, bud~ We both know my method's faster! Just hop in already!" If Wukong's eyes weren't like a fully black void, his playful eyeroll would've been very much noticeable. He hopped off his cloud, letting it disappear as he approached the portal, straight up jumping into it. Macaque soon followed after, closing the portal once he went through.
On the other side, you anxiously waited on your throne. While you didn't think any of your regular servants would harm you, you still felt a bit uncomfortable without at least one of your champions around. After all, a human ruling over an army of demons wasn't exactly a common thing demons respected. Only those who were already your servants in other lives would respect you fully... probably. And you had no recollection of any of your previous lives.
Your anxiety faded however once your two blue and purple champions emerged from a shadow portal in front of your throne. The sworn brothers didn't hesitate and kneeled upon seeing you.
"Apologies for the wait and for worrying you, Master. The thief ended up using the artifact and I ended up having to fight him to stop him." Macaque says, somewhat sounding ashamed of himself. He didn't like it whenever he didn't meet his Master's expectations. Even if something was out of his control.
You smiled softly as you leaned back. "It's fine, Mac-Mac. It was inevitable if that guy refused to face justice... I'm just glad you're alright and came back to me alive and well." The simian's frown turned into a bright smile as his tail swayed happily behind him. If you used that nickname for him, then he must've done everything right!
Afterwards, you smiled at your blue champion. "Thanks for finding him and taking him home again, Wu-Wu. Great job." You praised him. Now his tail was also swaying more happily. He nodded his head and grunted quietly in acknowledgement. Despite him not talking quite as much as his brother, and usually not showing emotions, you knew he was just as happy and content as your purple champion. His gentle tail sways were enough to understand.
The ginger-furred monkey then pulled out the artifact from underneath his cloaked side, still kneeling as he stared at you expectantly. "Shall I return this to the storage? The Archivist wanted to check on the items later today."
You scratched your head in thought for a moment as you hummed. "Guess that would be the best idea... If the Archivist shows up, then it's best if we have all the items that we borrowed... I don't wanna deal with his colleagues again, to be honest." You admitted, physically cringing a bit at the memory of your last encounter with the group the Archivist was involved in. They weren't happy when an eternal branding iron you used on your servants was stolen. Especially the Judge...
Wukong, knowing what you meant, nodded again as he stood up and bowed his head. "Of course, Master." Then he turned and walked away towards the palace's storage. Meanwhile, Macaque continued to smile brightly at you.
"Do you have another task for me to complete as well, Master?" He asked, eager to follow your every command like an obedient puppy. You hummed in thought again, but before you could respond, you heard the familiar voice of a certain mysterious figure in a black cloak and a fox-like mask...
"They do not. I have a task for you instead, Six-Eared Macaque."
The cloaked entity with the fox mask revealed himself as he walked out from behind your throne... When did he get here? Then again, he was one of the Archivist's colleagues, so you didn't question much anymore due to all they were able to do... You raised a suspicious eyebrow at the masked entity as you spoke. "...What task?" Those cloaked beings weren't to be trusted with how they operated. And while the Oracle usually spoke of the truth and was one of the more gentle-sounding members, you could never be sure whether or not there was malice behind anything their group did.
He responded in a blank tone, as if it were obvious. "The task involves going to the Underworld and retrieving the Scroll of Memory." Macaque visibly flinched slightly as one of his ears twitched at the mention of the Underworld, yet he avoided eye contact and remained quiet. The masked entity continued. "It's not the scroll itself that you might be interested in, but rather the curse that is bound to the scroll. That curse would be an extremely great addition to your palace's security." The entity added.
You grimaced a bit in thought, looking at him with uncertainty as you propped up your head on your hand. "Mhm... Are you sure this is worth it? Macaque isn't exactly fond of the Underworld, and I don't wanna make any of my servants, especially my champions, uncomfortable... Maybe Wukong could-" "NO!" Your purple champion suddenly cut you off as he looked at you, his void black eyes were wide open in panic, practically begging you to hear him out. He coughed awkwardly before bowing his head in a bit of shame and embarrassment for cutting you off.
"M-My apologies for interrupting you, Master... But I'd like to take on this mission myself, if I may." He said firmly, determination clear on his face as he tried to avoid this uncomfortable feeling of having to return to the Underworld. But he really wanted to prove himself worthy as one of your champions. He outwardly expressed his love and devotion towards you so much more than his sworn brother, and yet Wukong usually ended up getting more missions than him despite that.
You gave him a concerned look. "Are you sure? I know you don't like the Underworld after... Well, you know..."
He nodded his head without hesitation. "Yes, Master. Please let me retrieve that scroll for you."
After another short moment of uncertainty, you sighed in defeat. You stood up and moved towards your purple champion, petting his fluffy head. "Alright, fine... But if anything makes you feel unsafe or uncomfortable, I want you to just come back... Okay? I don't want you to get hurt, Mac-Mac. I'd rather have you here with me without that scroll than have the scroll without you." You said softly as you kissed his forehead. The dark-furred monkey blushed as his breath hitched at your touch and words.
That was all the motivation he needed.
His bright smile returned as he joyfully saluted. "Yes, Master! I'll make you proud!" You chuckled at his sudden eagerness. Almost immediately, a shadow portal opened up beneath the simian as he dropped into it, vanishing. Upon the closing of the portal, you raised an eyebrow at the Oracle.
"...Is this scroll really necessary?" You asked quietly, to which the entity silently nodded. You sighed as you pinched the bridge of your nose.
"It's not just for your safety, Your Majesty. It's also required to garner enough attention for the future paths to be connected to the present path." He responded flatly, which confused you. But again, you didn't question his words due to his occupation. And soon enough, Wukong returned from the storage. The monkey in blue walked up to you and bowed, as if to say he had finished his task.
You petted him as well, also kissing his forehead with a little smile. "Good job, Wu-Wu." And just like his sworn brother, his tail started to sway in a happy daze as he blushed despite his still expressionless face. He clearly also loved it when you called him by that nickname. The Oracle, upon seeing the Monkey King return and being showered in affection, quickly bid you farewell for now as he still seemed to be busy with other matters. Meanwhile, you continued to pet the ginger-furred monkey, waiting for his brother again. You even decided to continue petting him while your were seated on your throne.
However, at some point while petting your blue champion, a thought crossed your mind...
"Wu-Wu... If your brother isn't back within the next three hours, I want you to go look for him in the Underworld... And help him out if need be." Wukong's eyes were closed as he leaned into your gentle, addictive touch, while his tail swayed slowly behind him. He simply nodded without opening his eyes.
"Understood, Master."

In Primal Moon, reader is stuck with Sun wukong,mk and magaque and they seem smart enough to know to leave doing this week if they live with them or are they not living with them, like I imagine the reader is a friend/ally of theirs ,and all I can imagine is their confusion when while there walking in the city they suddenly get confronted by Sun wukong who wants his cub,he’s all like you can’t be alone your a baby/cub,so basically Sun wukong tracking reader down and kidnapping them and treating them like a cub.I imagine reader puts up a fight, because I think they can fight at least a little.
Tumblr media
Primal Moon: Four
(Part One) (Part Two) (Part Three) (Part Four)
(This fic has a paired bot!)
Twice a year; once in spring and once in autumn, a verdant moon rises to bring the bestial instincts of non-humans to light. Celestials and demons alike struggle to keep hold of themselves, something ancient welling up within them and shifting their thoughts and feelings to a more animalistic state.
Today, the first Primal Moon of the year has risen.
Now, with almost all your supplies ruined, the need arose to maneuver the newly viridescent Megapolis. And certainly, capitalism prevailed- in the name of making money, more than a few stores stayed open and pressured young workers into taking jobs during the most dangerous week of the year.
You had thanked the poor kid manning the counter as you left, two sacks held under your arms. Before they could even respond, you were beating a hasty retreat from the store and running back through the alleyways to return home.
But nothing is ever that simple, is it?
As a non-human yourself, you could be called one of the “lucky ones”. The haze of viridescence does not cloud your eyes, nor does it loess you astray.
The draconic horns upon your head tingle under every raindrop, newly sensitive. You’ve never been quite so on edge.
Rain can only dilute a scent so much- and the impact it has in doing so is almost null under the increased senses brought on by viridescence.
Especially if one is being tracked.
The constant rain and foggy streets only buy you a few further minutes than you would have had otherwise, a mystical beast tailing you with each step taken. The demons lurking around shady corners do not halt his search. Even the minimized scent trail does not deter him.
And all too soon, he’s just a breath away.
You barely have time to shiver before the demon is upon you, bounding footsteps that come down with enough force to shatter the paved streets under his feet.
A ginger simian; radiating power and boundless age, sharply turns the corner to greet you.
You only get a few seconds to register the sudden situation before he’s upon you, clutching your forearms with a manic smile.
Sun Wukong.
You had met him several times, engaging with the Mystic Monkey on amicable terms after being introduced to him by MK. He was always affectionate and kind, but now?
Hazy pits of verdant madness swirls within eyes that were once a mystic gold. His now-reddened teeth are stained with the scent of copper. Ginger fur that was once well-groomed and left in wild curls is now slick and flat from cold rain.
“My cub!! My precious, darling cub!! Bába was looking all over for you!! Come here! Come here, little one!”
Wukong snags both of your hands, pulling you into his chest for a freezing cold hug. As soon as he does, a heavenly white cloud phases into existence, fluffy vapors spilling from the white mounds.
“C’mon, cub! Bàba will take you home!”
Pulling away as much you can in shock, your fearful eyes fall upon the monkey’s manic eyes.
Wukong doesn’t notice the fearful look, only the fact that you’re trying fruitlessly to pull your hands away. “There, there, cub… come back to Flower Fruit Mountain with me! Bába will make sure his cub is nice and warm!” He cheers, jumping upon the cloud, holding onto your hand and tugging you onto the solid vapors with him.
The cloud kicks off from the ground, blazing across the sky with fervor. Miles of expanse whip by in seconds, the expanse of grey and neon that is Megapolis fading before you can even take a breath.
Only now does reason find you, leading to a prompt protest of:
“You- no, you can’t be serious! I’m-“
“Oh, I’m very serious, cub,” he interrupts with a coo, pressing a kiss to your scalp.” It’s dangerous out here- but Bàba is gonna keep you safe!” The simian responds, wrapping his arms around your back and pulling you tightly into his lap. He’s cold and soaking, but refuses to let you pull away. “What if some nasty demon hurt you with the Primal Moon? I don’t want my little cub to get hurt!”
Before you can truly respond or argue, Flower Fruit Mountain is in sight, and the cloud is touching down on lush grass. The Monkey King’s return is heralded with a massive troop of fluffy white Rhesus Macaques, clustering around the fading cloud at their king’s feet. The downwards lurch leaves your stomach queasy, shutting you up quickly.
Wukong laughs and grins with wild motions that are far too fluid, waving one hand and calling out to the troop surrounding the pair. “My little monsters! How have you been? Have you been taking good care of the mountain for me?”
The monkeys respond with loud chatter, screeching and waving their little white paws. They move closer, hopping on the Great Sage with glee and trying to reach over the his shoulders in a bid to touch your hair, already attuned to Wukong’s view of you.
If you’re one of his, then you’re one of theirs.
“Alright, alright!” He laughs, nudging the grabby furballs away with his tail. “We can have a grooming session later! I’ve gotta find something warm for my cub to wear!
The thought strikes you that he may well not be alone. Maybe there’s others here, people like him who are similarly affected by the Primal Moon.
“Does, um… does anyone else l-live here with you?”
(God, what is wrong with you? Why can’t you muster up anger? Or the will to fight?)
“Well, not usually! But I wrangled my sneaky little brother into staying the week, kiddo! He’s your uncle, remember? Macaque? With the black fur and the gold- well, they’re green now, but usually his eyes are gold. Ince I’ve got you something cozy, the three of us are gonna have a grooming session, pumpkin!”
“…Macaque?”
The destroyer of your home. The black-souled beast that dared to level your beloved palace.
The demon that crippled your father, Ao Guang.
“He’s here?”
The Great Sage slams his foot into the door, nearly breaking the hinges as he rushes you inside.
“He is! I can’t wait to introduce the two of you!”
Wukong ushers you into the bathroom and then the tub from there, running the hot water without even allowing you a chance to remove your clothes.
“I’ll be right back with something-“
“Wait!”
Here is your long-awaited chance. A silver lining in a heavy dark cloud.
Revenge, so clearly in sight, and for so little effort on your part.
“Just you and, um… “uncle” Macaque, then?”
The familial word tastes like bile on your lips, but you mange it all the same.
“You, “uncle” Macaque… but no MK?”
Wukong pauses, a sad little sigh sounding from his downturned lips. For a moment, his gaze darkens, eyes flicking away from your face. “He’s…” The Great Sage pauses, an unfamiliar expression crossing his features for a sparse moment. “…not doing well. It’s best for my little cub to stay away from him until this week passes.” In truth, the boy had grown… feral and violent, necessitating a temporary divide. “But don’t worry about him. Just get ready to go say ‘hi’ to your uncle, huh?”
“…can you bring me a big hoodie? With one of those combined front pockets,” you ask, widening and wetting your eyes like a sad puppy- a trick you had won your real father over with a few times. “They’re really cozy and make me feel really safe…”
And… they’re a great way to conceal a weapon. It seemed as though the Great Sage hadn’t taken note of the dragon-tooth dagger strapped inside the sleeve of your silk robe. You had forged it by hand, for the sole purpose of carving that damned black-hearted simian into pieces for all his misdeeds.
Who would’ve thought that the Primal Moon would accomplish so many steps of your plan for you? That it would bring you so close, so quickly?”
Wukong doesn’t bother with a response- he years off through the house with hurried feet, shredding through all of his clothes to find what you’ve asked for- anything for his cub, after all.
Leaving you to wash and warm your scales, plotting and planning and scheming.
Maybe, just maybe… this Primal Moon was going to be a good one.

Wild Robot LMK au
The Wild Robot but Lego Monkie kid.
The Wild Robot but Wukong is this giant stone golem created by Nuwa meant to be a heavenly guard or a weapon for the heavens.
The Wild Robot but stone Wukong before awakening falls to earth onto Flower fruit mountain and his main function is to protect. He spends his first waking hours trying to protect animals who find him weird, call him a monster, say he's keeping them captive and ripping him apart as he is prone to attack anything he perceives as a threat while trying to find something to protect.
The Wild Robot but in trying to climb a tree, Wukong unknowingly breaks a branch a monkey mother and her cubs were sleeping on, killing all but the runt of the family whom Wukong saves and is about to leave alone until the cub wakes up, calling the simian his father and imprinting on him.
The Wild Robot but Wukong finds a newfound purpose to protect this runt. But soon winter will come and the monkeys will need to climb to the highest peaks of the mountain to stay warm while the rest stay on the ground and now he needs to find a way to teach this cub to climb.
The Wild Robot but Wukong finds Macaque, a solitude loner who wants nothing to do with the odd duo until he finds he can exchange his intellect for protection from everything trying to kill him on the island.
The Wild Robot but slowly, it seems that the odd trio form a bond and the cub grows from a runt to a young adolescent who's an oddball from the rest but is compassionate and cares for his strange fathers nonetheless. Wukong at first finds the cub delicate, almost impossible to take care off but slowly adapts and finds little rewards in that.
The Wild Robot but Wukong at first gives the child a long lengthy title filled with grand promises of power and strength that he's known from protocol in how the celestials were named but comes to call the boy Xiaotian given that he fell from the sky.
The Wild Robot but every animal on the mountain looks down in disdain at the weird family except for a couple while Macaque fiercely doubles down to defend his family's friends' honor as the stone golem looks in confusion and disappointment.
The Wild Robot but as time passes the golem's body wears down, rough jagged edges meant to strike fear smooth down and are covered in wear, tear and moss while their home grows with even more mini paintings illustrating Xiaotian's growth.
The Wild Robot but the boy is no longer a boy and learns the truth of his family. He grows distant from his parents Wukong but the golem persists to help his son the cub regardless of his comparatively small size and weak arms to prepare him for the big climb.
The Wild Robot but during winter after Xiaotian and the rest of the monkeys leave, Macaque stays with Wukong and they gather the rest of the animals on the base of the mountain into their den to hibernate until spring. There they hold a truce and sleep in peace.
The Wild Robot but Xiaotian grows into his own, becoming the leader of the monkeys having a new perspective and other advantages the other simians don't have and comes down in spring to apologize to Wukong. That he realizes that by killing the rest of Xiaotian's birth family, he most likely saved him from being killed for being the runt.
The Wild Robot but heaven come back to retrieve their weapon but the animals defend their friendly giant and work together to prevent the destruction caused by the celestials from spreading.
The Wild Robot but Wukong gets captured anyway to study for how he'd changed protocol but Xiaotian learns from his dad the simian and climbs the clouds to infiltrate heaven to rescue him.
The Wild Robot but Xiaotian finds Wukong almost dead but after confessing how he misses his father, Wukong recognizes his son's voice and comes back. Together, the two leap from the heavens with Wukong holding his boy close to his chest, tucking him in like when he was small enough to fit in the golem's hand and shielding him from the impact and landing back on Flower fruit mountain to reunite with Macaque and complete their family.
(Can you tell I watched the Wild Robot recently?)
(also damn, I just basically made Monkey king reborn)
@furornocturna @furornocturna pssstttt I made another impromptu thingy. probably won't turn into anything though

Pairing: Wukong & afab!monkey!Reader Rating: SFW Summary: Trying to sneak out of having a bath is impossible when your grandpa can sniff out your funk. Warnings/Tags: Fluff, wholesome stuff, gremlin behavior, grooming/preening. Word Count: 800+ words
Tumblr media
On the flower fruit mountain, there were a plethora of monkeys across the mountain/island. A particular monkey, who looked no bigger than the usual monkey that hung around the mountain, crawled on the forest floor with their tail swishing in the air. Their eyes shifted left to right, their hands feeling carefully around the moist dirt and used their tiny feet to propel themselves forward.
The mud, pebbles, and leaves began caking their furry body as they continued army crawling to reach the break in the treeline. Just a few more seconds and you would be in the clear and ready to sneak off to the beach, all a part of your plan to spend the rest of your day making the largest sand castle there ever was. Too bad you couldn't rope MK into helping you, but he was the last thing on your mind at the moment.

Right, you needed to focus on escaping your-

"And where do you think you're going, young lady?"

Aw shucks.
You attempted to flee but a tail snaked around your ankle and yanked you up into the air. You hung upside down, scratching and clawing at the air as you slowly rotated in the older monkey's clutch.
"Pa, lemme-lemme down!" You shrieked.
"Not until you explain why you were sneaking' around and avoiding your much needed bath," Wukong, who happens to be your very annoying grandpa, pulled a face as he leaned forward to sniff you and gagged.
"I took one yesterday!"
"Your yesterday could be another person's week," Wukong raised an unimpressed brow as you began to chew on his tail to break free. "Let's go, kiddo, you're taking a bath one way or another."
"Ughhh, noooo!" You wailed as your grandpa summoned his cloud. Just as he was about to lower you on to it, you batted the dirt you managed to grab earlier and aimed for his eyes.
"Wha-? HEY!" Wukong spat and sputtered the dirt that managed to enter his mouth. His hands failed to snatch your rolling form from escaping. "Get back here!"
"Oh, you're gonna be in so much trouble when I find you!" Was the last thing you heard as you scampered off.
Despite your smaller body, your inherited strength and energy made it easier to put a lot of distance between yourself and your grandpa. You laughed triumphantly as you leapt from a tree and reached for a vine to swing to another branch.
You flung yourself in the air before landing on a high branch, sticks and other pieces of the forest tangled in your wild mane as you glanced over your shoulder to carefully examine any sign that the older simian was on your tail. You snorted smugly as you raised your tail high before reaching for the branch above your head only to grab something leather-y. You looked up and found your grinning grandfather knelt on the very branch you were going to grab.

"Boo."

"AHHHHHHHHH!"
It's safe to say that you ended up back in the cave with your grandpa dunking your stinky self into the nearest bed of water while he gathered the rest of the stuff he'll need to tame your messy appearance. As his fingers worked through the knots and twists in your hair, you hissed and attempted to move your head away from his hands only to be guided back by his tail.
"Sit still," Wukong sternly demanded as he moved your hands away from reaching up to your head. You only pouted in response, but overtime the gentle combing and scratches made your head droop to the side as you nearly dozed off a couple of times. Yet, you would always fight it off and remain glowering at the reflection of your grandpa in the soapy water.
"Don't look so gloomy, peaches," Your grandpa snickered as you blew a bubble away from your face. Wukong plucked a stick from your hair and flicked it away, "Look, we're almost done and I'll give you something sweet after, 'kay?"
You grumbled something before lifting your arms so your grandfather could take you out. You dropped your head on his shoulder as you were wrapped in a towel and placed in Wukong's lap. Wukong noticed your stillness as he rubbed the towel against your mane, squeezing gently and massaging the rest of the water off your body.
Hearing the soft snores coming from you brought a smile to his face. The monkey king gently cradled you against his chest, wishing you the best of dreams you could ever have.

————————————————————
🌊🌊🌊🌊🌊🌊🌊🌊🌊🌊🌊🌊🌊🌊
————————————————————
Being stretched so thin makes it difficult to be where I am in the moment… It’s hard to be everywhere at once, all the time…
Those are words that Bèiké has said more times she than could count. Words filled with exhaustion and a reality she had no choice but to accept.
Her mortal mind ever the servant to the very thing she immortally personified.
Part of her often wondered if the universe had made a mistake. Should she exist as she is? What if the water was just supposed to just stay water?
Why have a body? A consciousness?
Why possess a human heart?
The human body is such a fragile form to hold when you are Water.
As she lounged in a plush pillow-nest that filled a luxurious room within the palace of the Water Curtain Cave, her thoughts cause another morose sigh to escape from her. Which - in turn - caused a disgruntled chirp to rip her from her thoughts as she turned to face her ever wandering attention back onto her Simian Stone Brother.
Who, in turn, stared at her with sulking expression.
“Your mind wandered again.” Sun Wukong stated matter-a-factly. His tone as grumpy as his expression. The Great Sage not liking being anything less than the center of attention.
Instinctively, Bèiké’s mind filtered through a hundred possible excuses before she settled her mind and sighed. “I’m sorry brother… it’s hard to be here today.” She answered honestly.
Sun Wukong blinked. His expression loosing its annoyed grouch as he moved to sit a bit closer, getting in her space until their knees touched, his hands went to grip hers. She tensed at his proximity but didn’t move away, allowing him to initiate contact.
For all his foolishness and impulsive nature, he what he wasn’t was dull-witted.
“Hard-to-be-here as in, within this cave? Or hard-to-be-here as in, being in a body?” He gave her hands a gentle squeeze. Having known about her mind’s struggle to exist within her human form for a while now. Having found her dangerously dazed on more than one occasion when she had come to visit him and the Phoenix Maiden on the mountain of Flowers and Fruit he proudly called home.
Her mind had been so scattered that she neglected the body she - for reasons unknown to everyone accept the Buddha - possessed. She’d forget to eat, forget to move, forget to breathe, and in extreme circumstances, she’d forget to make her heart beat.
Her eyes would be open but staring at sights that weren’t in front of her. Sun Wukong had been forced to jerk her consciousness back into her body on multiple occasions, even biting her harshly to shock her out of her dazed state. Kick-starting her heart back up.
He had - back then - harshly scolded her for allowing herself to get to that state until he had learned just what had caused it. What she was constantly fighting. What she was eternally trying to hold together with no breaks or reprieves or mercy. He pitied his sister as much as he found himself begrudgingly admiring her.
Now, she stared at his hands as she tried to focus on the Monkey King in front of her, not the rush of the water curtain cave as it beat the rock into submission, not focus on the fish swimming through the veins of the river or the clouds overhead moving as though on a breath.
She tried to focus on the soft fur, not the whales casting their bubble nets to catch fish on the other side of the world, their songs vibrating her ears. Or the blood running through the creatures of the worlds veins as they ran, or slept, or played, or fought, or-
A louder chirp made her flinch back to reality as she met the glowing ember eyes her brother ever possessed, staring at her with more than a little worry.
“Is it getting harder sister? Tell this Sun Wukong and I will do what I can to assist.” His stone calloused hands rubbing over her arms in an attempt to ground her, his nails gently scraping and pinching against her skin. Trying to comfort her in the way his people do.
She sighed and closed her eyes, allowing herself to be grounded as she leaned forward slightly to rest her forehead against his. His heat a steady anchor against her normally cool skin.
Tumblr media
He cooed at his little sister. The sound reverberating from the back of his throat. For all his playful nature and mischievous tendencies, Sun Wukong, the great sage equal to heaven, was a good king who cared for his people. And he had claimed her as one of his. His nature wouldn’t allow him to be anything less than attentive to the woman he had taken as his younger sister.
So he took it in stride when his normally reserved and touch-adverse sister gripped the fur on his upper arms.
She gently rubbed her nose against his. “Forgive this Bèiké, Wukong. You should be anticipating the celebrations for the Day of your birth, you only have 4 full moons left… not worrying about a woman slowly going mad.” She released the hold she had on his fur with a sigh. “I can hear the voices of the water calling me, I don’t think I am strong enough to fight them anymore… do you blame me?”
Wukong nuzzled his forehead against hers with a soft coo. “Of course not dear sister. You’re forced to stretch yourself thin, I can’t blame you for something you have no control over. Go and rest. Regain your strength so that you can better worship this Sun Wukong later.” He grinned and gave her ear a chaste nip, hooting out a laugh when she flinched back and glared at him. “As you say, there are four months until the day of my birth is here. I expect great presents from you for my birth celebrations. An offering as great and handsome as I.”
She blew out a breath in his face to get him to back further away from her, which he did with his own flinch that left her chuckling. “Worry not brother, I plan on gifting you a treasure that will surely enhance your glory. Mayhaps it will also grant you some humility.”
“How dare you, insolence! I am a Pious Buddhist.” Wukong guaffs, crossing his arms, scowling but happy she’s feeling better enough to play with him.
“Yes and the Lady QuanYin throws celebrations every night for the inebriated.” She rolls her eyes as she gets to her feet. Finally giving into the urging of her voices in her mind commanding her to return to the sea.
“Your faith in this Sun Wukong is lacking sweet sister.” He pouts, snapping his teeth at her.
“I simply see the truth of you dear brother.” She smiles back at him as she steps to the Water Curtain, visibly relaxing as the spray drizzles across her skin.
She turned to give him one last hug before she allowed her physical form to quite literally melt away, rejoining the water curtain, then the river, then the ocean. Where she expanded to a vast nothing that was everything.
It was much easier to think when she didn’t have a physical form. Flesh, bones, organs and a functioning brain are complex and hard to maintain. It was much easier to exist when she didn’t need to worry about feeding her immortally mortal body, or keep track of her limbs, organs and senses.
The waters, or more specifically, allowing herself to rejoin the waters gave her clarity.
And she took advantage of that clarity.
The celebrations of Sun Wukong’s birthday for one. She already had an idea of what she wanted to gift him.
The storm summoning whistle and the abyssal armor.
Both grand and glorious and would be useful to him in his battles should he need to regear up to defend his kingdom.
Useful gifts, gifts that will give her brother a fun gleam in his eye. Gifts she knew Sun Wukong would love.
As whales sung in the distance, sharks made their migrations, carp fought their way upriver, children played in the streams, rain rehydrated the land and all the other things the waters of the world did, Bèiké thought about her families and friends, and wondered what they would do next.
And she tried not to think about how it was getting harder and harder hold her body in its physical state. Her chest painfully tight, her lungs stuttering.
She didn’t want to think about a fact so scary it had left her weeping in her hidden rooms on more than one occasion.
She may be immortal… but her body was failing.
And nothing could stop it or slow it’s failing down.
She didn’t know when it started, if she had to put her finger on a specific timeframe. Perhaps it was always that way and she only became aware of it the past hundred years or so. Or maybe it was just a switch that day she grew aware of her mind becoming more and more disoriented.
And as vast as the knowledge in the ocean was, there was little that could be done to stop a human body from being crushed by it.
But she didnt want to think about that.
So she forced her wandering thoughts back to what she could get for her friends and family when she returned to her palace.
————————————————
🌊🌊🌊🌊🌊🌊🌊🌊🌊🌊🌊
————————————————
Bèiké remembered the first thing she ever heard. She didn’t know when exactly her consciousness had begun, only that she had one day become aware of the fact she had one.
“There you are, what a beautiful child you’ll become. Welcome to the world, Maiden of the Worldly Waters.”
The voice had been masculine in nature. But gentle and happy. The voice one should associate with a person meant to be a mentor or a guide.
She had known with a certainty she didn’t know she possessed that it was the Voice of the Buddha. And she had decided she liked his voice before she even knew what it was to ‘like’ or ‘dislike’ something.
The ocean is old, timeless and ever shifting, No one truly knows exactly how old the Waters of the world are.
By the time that thought occurred to Bèiké, she was already a part of it. And to have a consciousness be born of the waters is an unexplainable experience.
Bèiké remembered the first time she opened her eyes.
She was in the deep ocean, the light far away but still visible. She felt so small yet far too large at the same time. She felt powerful yet small, loved and feared, wild and free.
Her first act had been to head to the surface, the light had been so beautiful from under the waves and she had wanted to see it up close.
The first time she stepped out of the water and onto land it was a wild storm. She laughed with the thunder and danced in the rain. Making it dance around her in turn with nothing but the mist to cover her modesty
The world felt so alive.
She can’t recall now how long she had danced. Only that when the storm had finally calmed, she was back in the middle of the ocean, the waves creating flowing skirts around her hips and her hair covering her chest to flow into the waters as pearls formed to begin adorning her.
Tumblr media
She was sitting on top of the waters, leaning back to watch the clouds when they arrived.
She remembered thinking how pretty and bright their armor was, how delicate their movements. The bright objects they held gleaming in the light and appearing to glow - she’d later learn that they were called swords and spears, weapons. - And they guided down a Man and a Woman to stand before her.
Bèiké remembered thinking that the man’s clothes and hair were radiant. And that his brow was stern.
The woman, similarly, was a stunning beauty. Something about her felt familiar to Bèiké, and even without the older woman saying a word, the maiden knew in her heart that she was fond of her.
The conversation had been brief. Having been so long, Bèiké struggled to remember exactly what was said,l that day, but they held curiosity and caution towards her. Bèiké, in her innocence of being newly formed and freshly capable of speech, and done little help relieve any suspicion.
When she simply told them she was water, that they stood on her body, that they held her within them, it was the older woman, who introduced herself as the Lady Mazu, who confirmed their suspicion.
The Lady Mazu was delighted, and took the maiden as her own right away, giving her the name she most popularly went by. “Bèiké” little seashell, her precious ocean gift. Encouraging the Jade Emperor, to agree.
———
The time in the jade palace had been a time of great learning, how to read and write, proper speech and posture, songs, poetry and dance, palace life and hierarchy, avoiding the empress and her secretive glares and false niceties.
Bèiké was kept busy
So busy, that it took a long time for the whispers to be heard.
She remembered when it happened the first time.
A dinner banquet for one of her brother’s promotions had been coming to a close. Beike had remembered being on edge all day but not knowing why. Her precious attendants, Tian Shui and HeHua were similarly concerned.
It had snuck up on her, like a snake hidden by shadows, coiled and ready to strike. Bèiké had no idea the danger was so close. Perhaps that was why it had snuck up on her with such success.
It wasn’t a trickle of sound that steadily grew louder, no. It had been a cascade. The dam bursting and the floodgates flying open.
Beike had collapsed holding her hands over ears, trying to block out a torrent of sound that was coming from her mind.
Rushing through her like a wild river and a riptide combined. The crash of noise that left a single repeating message in the front of her mind.
“I must return.”
She didn’t remember her body fading or her return to the water. Only that when the sound finally, finally stopped, and she was able to open her eyes once more, she was deep in the ocean. The only sound she could hear was the beating of her own heart.
Relief.
The rest was a blur, vaguely aware of dragons, great, shining, metallic beasts coming and checking on her on behalf of her royal family. But even the exchanged worse were fuzzy at best. Eventually she was able to “Wake Up” again and come out of the waters and she was later told she was gone for three weeks.

————————————————
She had learned since the day of her brothers promotion banquet, when the crescendo washed over her and forced her back to the ocean for over a fortnight. She had learned the signs to look for and the whispers to pick up on.
It didn’t completely disappear the problem, however it made it more predictable. She knew when she had to return to water, to listen to the voices before it was too late and the whispers went from a whisper to a scream, a small request to be heard to a deafening demand to be obeyed.
Instead of a tidal wave of noise that appeared all at once, it had in time become a creeping whisper that steadily grew louder at a much more tolerable rate.
Still…
It was easy to get lost in the whispers of her own nature. The waters from around the world, the clouds above growing fat with rain, the ebb and flow of the waters over the land, the last dried breath of the parched to the gasping struggles of the drowning. The rivers widening and bending, the lakes and ponds rising and falling.
Life ever moving, water ever flowing. And her mortal, human mind struggled to keep up.
It was getting worse…. How frustrating.
“My Beike!”
She jumped back to her body and blinked at her adopted mother, the Lady Mazu’s eyes fixed on her with worry, her hand clutching hers in a grip as tight as her delicate hold would allow.
Bèiké gripped her skirts as she forced her attention back to her present body.
“Mother, I am here.”
The goddess of the Sea and guardian of sailors looked at her daughter with eyes filled with doubt and worry. “…Are you?”
Bèiké sighed, unable to lie to her. “For the moment… I’m sorry mother.”
The Lady Mazu furrowed her brow and gave her daughter a chastising look. “Naughty girl, why must you make your poor mother worry so?” She sighed, gently ran her fingers through her daughter’s hair, untangling the pearls that inlay the long sea-colored strands before gently cupping the young woman’s cheek. “I am worried for you dear, I fear that I see less and less of you. And then when I do see you, I can’t entertain the joy in my heart because your eyes are still far away.”
Despite knowing it wasn’t truly her fault, Bèiké still felt guilt tighten her chest at her mother’s distress. “I have failed you mother, I haven’t been filial. I beseech you to forgive your foolish child.” Bèiké pressed her cheek into her mother’s touch, her hands soft and warm, soothing, grounding.
“Oh you silly girl. How can I blame you? I should be the one apologizing.”
Bèiké sucked in a harsh breath and flinched back. “What? No! Mother you mustn’t, I should’ve never put you in this position of worry.”
Lady Mazu simply sighed and and summoned her regalia, sitting up straight, fixing her skirts and holding her head high. “I am the mother of the sea, I can sooth storms and protect sailors, I am a guide, a saint and savior…” her face filled with sadness again. “Yet I can’t sooth your mind, I can’t guide you home… I can’t protect your heart. You must forgive your helpless mother.”
Bèiké shook her head, unwilling to let her mother take the blame for her. “My lady please, there’s nothing to forgive, I have never blamed you. Mother. I owe the person I am today thanks to you.”
“Oh my sweet child. I only wish I could fix your mind.”
The conversation had then turned to more light-hearted topics after that. Mother and daughter catching up and Bèiké happily gifting her mother with precious treasures from the deep, enriching her palace evermore. Doing her filial duty to the woman who adopted her as family.
They both tried to avoid the forbidden topic of the Pearl Maiden’s mind.

🌊🌊🌊🌊🌊🌊🌊🌊🌊🌊🌊
————————————————
It started a month ago with a single storm.
Bèiké had been swift to quell it. But it had devastated all the same.
Not in damage or loss of life. No.
In fact, since it had been in the middle of the ocean, nothing had been harmed. It was devastating in a far more subtle way.
Bèiké had had no control over it.
It had been created without her conscious control, and despite being water, it resisted her command.
That shouldn’t have been possible.
She Was water.
Quelling a storm was a simple to her as raising a hand above her head. And yet…
She felt fear take root in her stomach, her hands shaking as she kept them clenched to her chest.
She was losing control…
What did that mean for her? What did that mean for water? Her mind scrambled to find an answer but there was none to be had.
She had been far too frazzled to return to the Jade palace, she couldn’t risk the courtiers, the eunuchs, or even her precious attendants observing her in such a state.
But in desperate need for some sort of connection, something to stop the torrent of panic flooding through her, she went in search of it among people who wouldn’t judge her for being anything other than the gentle princess.
And so it was, that she had found herself on the mountains of flowers and fruit. And Sun Wukong, though surprised, had welcomed her into his home all the same.
“Pray tell brother - and you mustn’t judge me for this query- but say you feel like you’re loosing control over your body. How would you handle such a dilemma?” It was a question Bèiké had casually asked the victorious fighting Buddha hours after they had sat for dinner. Wukong’s limbs had been loosened with his favorite wine, he had been coming down from his more festive mood that had started the evening with his people.
Still, he gave the question some serious thought all the same… or as serious as the wine allowed him to be.
He answered her as he fell back, draping himself across her lap and putting her hand into his golden mane, demanding some head scratches. She obliged him as he answered her, his eyes shut and the smile on his face content.
“I would try to think about what could possibly be causing this body of mine to be so bold as to disobey its master.” He grinned all teeth. “If I came up with nothing, had no pompous trickster cursed me, had no imperious scalawag tried to poison me somehow, I would simply assume it was an internal issue and I’d open myself up to take an intimate look.”
She blanched as she looked at him. “I don’t presume you’re being metaphorical in your words.”
Wukong hooted out a laugh at her expression. “I take it Brother Wujing and my dear Phoenix didn’t tell you the story of the three insufferable Tao priests who presumed to be immortal?”
Bèiké slowly shook her head as she resumed his head scratches as his whined persistence. “No, I don’t believe anything involving Taoist priests came up.”
Wukong shrugged. “Well, it’s no matter, this Sun Wukong can happily give you a demonstration.” He jumped out of her lap and hopped to his feet. “Little monkeys! Go get this Old Sun a sharp blade! Watch as your great king demonstrates his greatness!”
Bèiké insisted he didn’t need to prove his immortalities to her of all people, she was there for the aftermath of Lao Tsu’s furnace incident afterall.
However Wukong was already too deep in his feverish mania to be stopped, he wanted to brag and show off, and so he would. Bèiké doing her best to not be obvious in her looking away.
She had politely excused herself shortly after getting him drunk off of his favorite wine again so that her departure wouldn’t be noticed.
Well that had been…
Graphic…
Fruitless in answers as well… she doubted ripping herself apart to look at her own insides would enlighten her to the answered she desired.
She couldn’t even hold a physical form for long, let alone focus long enough to disembowel herself. Wukong was mad she decided, utterly mad. Not that that was really surprising news to her.
Still…
As her heart thumped audibly in her chest, she laid a hand against it as she found herself thinking.
As the waters churned around her, and she felt her control slipping bit by bit as the sun began to brighten the sky once more, she contemplated…

🌊🌊🌊🌊🌊🌊🌊🌊🌊🌊🌊
————————————————
Bèiké huddled in a corner of her room, her head in her hands as her body shook.
“You’re okay, you’re okay, keep it together, you have to breathe.” She repeated that mantra to herself over and over.
The whispers were a near constant yell in her mind now. And much to her horror, control had fully slipped weeks ago.
And even worse, she couldn’t return to the water.
She was stuck in her human body, and as her mind and nature struggled to return to its source - return to water - it beat and slammed against the fragile, mortal shell like a vicious trapped beast. Shredding and biting and screaming.
It hurt so bad.
Her need to return was a constant pounding in her head. Her mind ripping itself apart.
Water acted now without her permission, her own body betraying her. Storms either ravaged the land or refused to hydrate the land entirely.
Massive floods and severe droughts were reported around the world. The loss of life had already overwhelmed the kingdom of shadows, the underworld was choking on the dead.
Fishermen, too, yielded nothing. No fish, no urchins, no crabs or shrimp, no octopus, not even seaweed were successfully caught.
And combined with the severe droughts and floods, the mortals were starving and thirsty.
And as mortals do when desperate; They prayed.
Prayed for relief, prayed for mercy, begged for something to save their families and themselves.
The gods, celestials and denizens of the sea did what they could. But fighting a never ending storm was no simple task.
The Lady Mazu had run herself to the ground in exhaustion trying to sooth the storms and save the people with little to no results. The waters disobeying her as much as they had sliced themselves loose of Bèiké.
Her heart thumped painfully in her chest, causing her to sob as she sucked in a breath that she distantly realized she had not taken for 7 minutes. Black spots littering her vision as her mind was pulled in a thousand different directions.
Someone spoke to her, the sound of the voice echoing in her head like so much agony, she flinched away from the sound and clenched her hands over her ears tighter.
“Breathe, you have to breathe, keep breathing.” She mumbled reminders to herself as she manually counted her breaths.
Thunder crashed far too close, the rain beating on the windows- against the walls, the clouds holding the city churning, the panicked blood flow of the guards and citizens,
Flood washing poor creatures away, areas of dead space that refused to be quenched, lighting striking the ocean in an electrified jolt, wind blowing far too quickly, the sun being blocked out. The world darkening.
Pain… so much pain.
She sobbed, feeling it all, begging it to end.
That voice again, more insistent, but just as painful. She shook her head and whimpered, it was too loud to hear.
She was only vaguely aware of the shadowed figure walking away from her quickly on hurried footsteps.
Her mind was beset by the suffering of those below, weak heartbeats, panicked breaths, last breaths, waters’ destruction. She couldn’t focus.
It hurt.
Help… She doesn’t know if it was said out loud or not. Someone please help me
“Some-ing…Done… this-ing t-.. kill her.” She couldn’t tell how close those words she heard were. She didn’t know who said them or what they were talking about. She couldn’t even focus before her mind was pulling her to look at the great western oceans, another storm violently being born.
“Stop… please…” she didn’t know who she was begging. “You’re hurting them.”
A twisting turret of water shot into the sky to connect to violently twisting clouds above, dragging life into it and breaking their bodies. Bèiké felt their violent, panicked end as she retched and gagged.
“Stop, you’re hurting them, stop.” Tears forming in her eyes, running down her face, staining her clothes… or was that blood? What was water?
Help me please, it hurts… she begged again.
“Shhh child, breathe.” Hands, somehow both warm and cold, comforting in their touch, caressed her face and settled over her ears, gently lifting her head towards the source of the voice. “Breathe now.”
She sucked in a breath as more tears fell from her eyes, her hands gripping the ones steadying her head.
Her eyes opened to reveal the Buddha, that smile ever present on his face. She was dimly aware of her mother, father and attendants standing behind him a ways.
She looked back up towards the Buddha, her breathing slowing enough to allowed some capability of speech.
“Somethings wrong with me. I can’t control it.” She choked out, her eyes blurred with her tears as she begged him to help her. “I’m being ripped apart.”
“Yes maiden of the waters, I know. I must apologize. I gave you a mortal heart so that you’d love the land. I never intended for your body to rebel so violently against mortality. You were never supposed to be mortal. I see now that even without it, you would’ve loved the land all the same.” His ever calm smile was apologetic, Bèiké found herself instantly forgiving him even though she didn’t fully understand his words in the moment.
“It hurts…” Bèiké sobbed, gripping his kasaya as she’s seen children do a hundred times to their mother’s skirts. “Please, end the pain, I can’t bear to feel their suffering any longer.”
She wanted to scream, but her voice was so damaged, her pleas were barely above a whisper.
But he heard her all the same. He waved his hand, and shooed all onlookers out. Which they did with varying degrees of hesitation, some being pulled out of the room, voices of concern rising.
“At ease child, I can’t end the storm, that’s something only you can do. But I can grant you the clarity to think your next choices through. For the next choices you will have to make are not to be easy.” He nodded and properly sat before her, still allowing her to cling to him in her pain. “I will take some of the blame for that, as it was my well intentioned gift that put you in this position in the first place. Water can never be mortal, I have learned that now, and I will not forget. Mortality only throws off its balance.”
He placed a hand over her eyes, his touch a golden glow. And with that glow…
Came silence.
Sweet, merciful silence.
Bèiké sobbed her relief.
“Oh you poor thing, you’ve been feeling it all, but chained and unable to be apart of it.” A pain pinched his features as he took on her burden to relieve her.
She fought to calm her breaths as relief washed over her. She tried to settle her mind. So much was broken, so much needed mending. “Can you break the chains? Can you revive my control” She looked to him, hoping for an answer.
His expression was one that made her chest tighten ever further as she felt dread hang above her like a damned sword of Damocles. “Alas, maiden of the waters, I cannot. And for that you have my eternal apologies. You have become too mortal… this body of yours… its yin and yang are too broken and out of balance. It will no longer support the job it’s been tasked with.” His voice was gentle even as his words were heartbreaking.
Still, Bèiké pushed forwards. After all, all problems had to have a solution… right? “If it’s the body that is broken, will it not do for me to just shed it and return to the waters?”
The Buddha shook his head. “You misunderstand me child, I speak not of this physical body, but your innermost core. The body of You…. It is not so easily shed.”
She tried to understand his words, what he was saying. And found she could not. “Auspicious One please, help me learn, I am dull-witted. What must I do? Innocents are dying because I’ve lost control.”
A sad look pinches the Buddha’s features. “Pitiful child, I wished there was a simple solution. In order to shed your core… to reclaim your identity as the Worldly waters… You must cease.”
She froze, it felt even as though her heart in her chest paused as a horrible understanding washed over her “…Cease?”
The Buddha looked said, but still he nodded. “Yes… cease. The Jade emperor is tasked with keeping balance, the core of the current imbalance resides in you… in order to quell the storms, to spare the land and break your chains, you must offer that core to him. And with its Oceanic Dharma, he can restore the world. But in doing so… you will cease.”
Her mind raced. It was an answer, a solution… but at what cost? Of course she’d pay it, it was one life compared to millions, the math was easy… but… “…. If I did that… mother’s heart would break….”
“Yes… it will.” He nodded solemnly once again.
The plans she had…. The people she met… “… I made friends, I made promises to those friends…. They would mourn me.”
“More people would mourn you than you realize sweet child, you have become beloved.” He gave her a sweet, sad smile. One that reassured her as much as it broke her heart.
“…. Doing this… choosing to cease… will that save them?” She had to be sure… because what was being asked of her…
She felt a breath of relief wash over her as the Buddha nodded once again, reassuring her worry. “It will restore the balance and bring about the gentle rain and revitalization of the world once more. They will be safe, they will be free to mourn you.”
She stared at him, biting her lip harshly as tears fell fresh, the choice made, her heart and mind settling to the decision she has made. “Then I will do this… for them.”
The Buddha was silent for a moment before he carefully place a hand on top of her head. “I’m sorry for putting this task on you child, please forgive me.”
“We didn’t know… we couldn’t have known. You’re not at fault Auspicious One. There’s no villain to defeat or to place blame on in this.” She offers a shaking smile at him, trying to be brave. “Just a duty to perform… correct?”
The great and merciful Buddha stared at her for a moment before he smiled and nodded, gently reaching to take her hand. “You are truly a Propitious and Filial Child. No matter the outcome, I shall ensure your sacrifice is immortalized. The gentle and tranquil Yìn Zhēnzhū gōngzhǔ, and her love for the land.”
Still trying to keep a brave face, but unable to stop the tears, she sat up straight and kowtowed before the great Buddha. Offering her thanks for both the merciful silence within her mind, and a solution to the great problem.
As the Buddha bid her to rise, she looked up at him, a new determination in her gaze.
“How much time do I have left?…. I…” her face fell again. “I must say goodbye.”
The Buddha nodded in understanding before he looked out the window and contemplated. “I can hold your storm back with my dharma for two days… forgive me child that’s all I can permit. Any more and your core will shatter, the oceanic Dharma housed within will be irreparably damaged and the balance will never be restored.”
Beike kowtowed again. “Thank you Auspicious One… I shall not dare waste even a second of it.”
He led her out of the room where her loved ones, her father, mother, her beloved attendants and loyal guard… even her dear cousin, Erlang Shen all of them were there.
She rushed to hug her mother first, and as she was held by her family, both her and the Buddha explained the situation.
It wasn’t easy…
Her mother had collapsed in grief, even her Sage of a father, the honorable and steadfast great Jade Emperor, let out a sob as he looked upon the two of them in horror.
“Auspicious One, I beseech you, there must be a way to spare my child. We haven’t even had a millennium with her.”
But upon receiving no such solution, He excused himself - after giving his daughter a hug and an order to come and see him tomorrow - to go and grieve in private for a bit with his beloved consort and wife.
The Buddha excused himself next to go and use his dharma to temporarily silence the storms.
Her attendants clung to her and her faithful guard bowed and wept. They asked to follow her and she was quick to forbid it. She needed them to aid in helping her mother. Because she knew her mother would be hit worst by this. They needed to stay alive to grieve her so that they would have her mother, and her royal mother would have them.
And her attendants would be well taken care of, and build their cultivation to become powerful ladies. They would become a force on their own so that they would never, Never need to serve another royal ever again. And her faithful guard would grow in strength, rise in rank, become a great general and never need to depend on her or another king ever again. She held their hands tightly as she made them promise.
It took convincing. But they agreed. Holding their chins high and putting on a brave face as they served their Lady dinner, prepared her room and vigilantly stood guard.
Her beloved people… she never did deserve them…
That left Erlang.
“Are you too going to convince me to try and find another way dear cousin.”
“…. No, the solution came from the Buddha himself, he wouldn’t have suggested it had there been another way…”
“Then what is that look for?”
“…..” He sat next to her and reached out to grip her hand. Fingers entwined, shoulder leaning against hers. “I can’t protect you… I am sorry.”
“You don’t have to apologize Erlang,” she leaned her head against his, allowing him to support her weight. “Besides, my dear cousin, mayhaps one day you will find someone who you can protect, who will drive you crazy and be strong enough that you don’t allow those hovering instincts of yours to rule you… mayhaps one day you’ll have a couple kids, a charming family… a good life.”
She smiles and holds his hand tighter as she watches his face pinch in a pain that has no physical wound.
“And when that day comes, and you’re truly happy, and the sun is setting pink over an orange and purple sky, I hope you gather your children and sit them down under a weeping willow next to a gentle river, and you tell them tales of their silly Cousin-Aunt who would’ve loved and spoiled them so much.”
Tears weld in his eyes, the only thing refusing to let them fall is pride.
“That could’ve been us…”
“No…” She was quick to stop him in the trail of thought. “It couldn’t have been. We are too much alike… we would’ve fought and made each other miserable, you wouldn’t have been able to keep an eye on me the way you need to in order to settle your battle-mind, and I would’ve become odious of the way you hovered and restricted me in the name of safety… and deep down, I know you know this….”
Silence before a pained chuckle and Erlang used his free hand to pinch the corners of his eyes, holding his nose. “You would’ve been an awful wife.”
Beike makes an aghast sound in her throat. “How dare you. I would’ve made an amazing bride.”
“Just not to me?”
“Just not to you… but, I am happy we are family. And I’m happy I was given this time to say goodbye to you…” she leaned her head against his shoulder again. “You’re a good man Erlang. You have such a big heart. Don’t you dare let others take advantage of that okay? And when you do decide you want to take a partner, make sure you’re not blinded by your dedication and choose someone with a good heart, okay? Choose Someone who will love you back wildly and most ardently.”
He looked at her with red eyes for a bit before he nodded and leaned forward to kiss her. And though she tensed, she let him say goodbye.
When he pulled back, he gently caressed her cheek. “I vow to you that I will do as you say. I will carry your name… I will keep them safe.” He glances at her beloved attendants and guard.
Bèiké felt a tightness of worry in her chest loosen as she placed her hand over his. “Thank you Cousin… you have no idea how much that means to me.”
He nodded and stood up, going to take his leave before he stopped, and looked back. “You need to say goodbye to him…. His Birthday is in just a couple dawns. He needs to know, or he will carry that anger.”
Bèiké clenched her fists against her skirts, but loosened them as she sighed and nodded. “I can’t tell him when…. He will try and stop it…”
Erlang nodded then gave a shrug and a whistle. Calling his dog next to his side. “Then don’t tell him when… but he deserved to know as your brother.”
The Water Maiden gritted her teeth. “I hate it when you are correct…”
He smiled and left the room. The hound on his heels.

————————————————
Beike had two days… two days to say goodbye.
She wanted to spend most of it with her family, and that first day… she did.
Her beloved attendants and guard stood by her side as she was prepared and escorted to her Royal mother and father.
Together, they wept, and held one another. Then spoke of stories and laughed and remembered. She sang for them and performed for them one last time. Served her mother and father tea. Did her filial duties as a daughter.
Bèiké was unable to stop her tears flowing again as her brothers and sisters arrived as well, coming to embrace her and love her and say their goodbyes. Sharing their own stories with her, singing and celebrating the time she had had with them, with her. Apologizing for past arguments and disagreements, and showing remorse for not accepting her right away.
The Maiden of the Waters listened to them all without interruption, forgave the ones who asked for it and embraced them. Wanting to spend this time as family with no drama’s or petty rivalries.
They all did their best to enjoy the moment without acknowledging too much the impending doom creeping ever closer.
It was everything Beike could’ve wanted as a last day with her family. Forever grateful that she’d been adopted into it.
And it was done too soon, Beike looked out and saw the world in that stage of blue that’s common as the sun sinks that certain level below the horizon…
Day one was done.
She bid farewell to her siblings, sharing her love with them once more. She went and hugged her parents and told them of her plans for tomorrow, how she knew she needed to say goodbye to her sworn brother.
And while her royal mother wanted to spend her last day with her, her father nodded and understood her need to bid farewell. Placating his wife and asking that she only return in the morning so that they may spend some time together before….
He couldn’t finish that sentence, but the Maiden nodded and understood. Giving her word.
With that, she spent the remainder of the night with her beloved attendants and guard, sharing stories and fragile time….
It was when the early morning came about that she got ready. The sun still far from breaching the horizon as she made her way out on her cloud pavilion, her body still chained from rejoining the waters.
She carried a delicately wrapped gift carefully in her lap. The wrappings gold, orange, purple and red and shimmering. Colors that had reminded her of a beautiful dawn, something she had always associated with her sworn brother and his bright personality.
As the great Mountain Huaguo came into view, she felt her chest tighten in nervousness.
Sun Wukong could be unpredictable at the best of times, and completely irrational at the worst. She knew not how he was going to handle this.
She carefully stepped into the water curtain cave and called out. Some monkey Guai she recognized as a general raising his brow at her from his lounging position on the roof. She smiled and gave a polite bow before holding up the gifts to show him.
The general rolled his eyes and disappeared into the palace, Sun Wukong appearing a handful of minutes later. His clothes were not pajamas, though also not his royal regalia. He smiled at her, though his eyes were curious.
“My my! What a wonderful sight! My sister come to visit this Old Sun! And with gifts, a generous woman you are!” He wrapped an arm around her and began to lead her inside. “I feared you were stern with me! Such storms have been beating my mountain! Why, the young ones have all needed to find shelter in high ground! But if you are here with gifts, that clearly mustn’t be so. Though you must satisfy my curiosity Young Pearl. The sun is still a long time in rising, what brings you by this odd hour?”
Bèiké smiled, her voice tight as she answered him and allowed herself to be led. “I will tell you everything, my dear brother. But first, invite me to your table, let us sit. I want to see your smiles as you accept these birthday gifts before I must regrettably darken the mood.”
Wukong paused and looked at her, his smile dropping. “Darken the mood? Pray tell, why must you do such a thing? Has someone dared to insult you? Tell this Wukong and I shall have them apologize.“
Beike shook her head, and patted his hand. “Let us sit first, i shall tell you then.”
Wukong scowled at her vagueness but led her to his dining hall all the same. Sitting them down and getting a pot of tea on the fire.
“There.” He stated. “We have sat, and the tea is brewing, I have done my hostly duty, now explain.”
Beike tried not to laugh, for this was no laughing matter, but she smiled as she handed him the gifts. “Will you not open them first?”
He waved her off as he bared his teeth at her. “You stall. I am impatient young Pearl, what is the bad news you bring?”
Beike sighed before she pulled the gifts back. Staring at her hands before she looked back up at her brother. “I wanted to celebrate with you before I shared the news. I didn’t mean to cause you worry brother. But there’s no easy way to say this.”
She sat up straighter and looked her Sworn brother in the eyes. “Wukong… I’ve lost control, my body has rejected me, my mortality has run up… I don’t know exactly how much time I have left, but.…” she gave a shaky smile. “It wasn’t fair to not come and say goodbye…”
Wukong froze as he took in her words, his eyes searching hers as he searched for a lie, a jest, a deception. “That can’t be…” his hand reached out to grip hers. “You are immortal, that cannot be.”
She gripped him back, her lips beginning to tremble and her sight beginning to blur as she nodded. “It is so… the Buddha himself confirmed it. The only reason the storms aren’t raging this very moment is because he is holding it back…. But dear brother, my mind is broken, my body has failed…”
She shook her head her tears falling. “I did not know how to tell you, but you deserved to know. You are family, I couldn’t leave without saying goodbye…”
“You hush.” Gritted words.
“I wanted so much to celebrate your birthday with you, and see your happy reaction as you open these gifts… I wanted to give you a chance make peace with this.”
“Be silent.”
“I have failed my duties and lives have been lost due to it… I can never make that right, but I need to try and fix this. However I want to still say goodbye. It’s not right to just disappear-“
“HUSH!” Sun Wukong roared as he pushed her down against the pillows, snapping his canines inches from her face. “YOU BE SILENT!”
He shook above her, his breathing harsh, his hands gripping her wrists to the point of bruising. He looked down at her with golden eyes blazing, using his sight to see the horrible truth of the Pearl maiden.
And of course he saw that she was speaking the truth. Her very core was failing, her body all out of balance, her mind being held together by only the Buddha’s Dharma. Oh he knew the feeling of that power intimately well, for he was trapped under it for 500 years. And even that was swiftly breaking under the force of a torrent storm that was only just barely being held back.
His younger sister holding a power within her that was far too large for her current body, and he could see it was quite literally ripping her apart. An awful sight.
“I….” His voice shook as he is mind quickly ran through a hundred different scenarios. “Yes, an idea, I have an idea! I could sneak back to the shadow kingdom, erase your name.”
“Wukong…”
“Lao Tzu has a hundred different medicines, I could go steal a couple again.”
“Brother-“
“The immortality peaches bloom in another handful of days, you could eat them. I could mend your core! I’m sure it wouldn’t be too hard! The Buddha misses things all the time! There must be some loophole. You are immortal, there’s always a way ou-“
His words cut off as the maiden leaned up and buried her face against his neck, pulling her wrists uselessly against his grip.
He shuddered and let out a whine when he felt her tears dampen his fur.
“You… you are not supposed to leave… How are you to leave? Young as you are, the young pearl that has slammed this Wukong with your waters in play. The skinny little princess who has stood up to me more than any of those celestials who dare call themselves warriors… yet you can’t beat this? How dare you…”
“I am sorry brother… you must forgive this Bèiké.”
“I do not! How dare you, you can’t leave. How dare you.” His hands released her wrists only to wrap around her and drag her into a crushing hug.
She of course hugged him back, Sun Wukong had always been steadfast and strong, even when he was angry or stubborn or doing something reckless he always somehow made her feel safe. To feel him tremble against her made her chest tighten to a near painful degree.
“My impulsive brother… please, I need you to make peace with this.” She rubbed his back as she did her best to choke back her tears. “I don’t want to leave with regrets.”
He snarled against her throat but refused to look at her. “You dare ask me to be okay with this? You are selfish.”
She combed her fingers through his fur, desperately trying to comfort him in the way his people do. “Will you let me be selfish in this? I want us to spend the day together, I want to celebrate your birthday early. I want to enjoy my time with my sworn brother and leave with good memories and no regrets…”
Slowly he began to relax and his grip on her loosened. “You ask a lot of this Sun Wukong Bèiké.”
Bèiké blinked rapidly at hearing her brother say her name, but nodded even though she knew he didn’t see her. “I know… I want today to be a good day for both of us… let your little sister be selfish, please?”
Long moments passed before he finally nodded.
“Because I am a good and gracious King and brother… I will do this.”
“You are a wonderful and handsome king.”
“Your praises flatter me sister.”He leaned back and gave her a look. “I… do not like this…”
Beike gave him a shaky smile. “I am not fond of it either… would you rather I left?” She asked genuinely.
Sun Wukong was quick to shake his head. “I would not chase you away. I want to spend the day with you. But alas, it feels odd to pretend nothing is wrong, you sit before me so it feels odd to grieve, yet I see your core shattering…” he rests his forehead against hers. “Would you be stern with me if I hid you away in the mountain where I knew it was safe?”
Bèiké closed her eyes and similarly pressed her forehead against his. “I’d be sad, because I know it would not change anything. You know that too… But… Thank you for caring about me…”
A growl rumbled in his chest. “I am your brother, of course this Sun Wukong is going to care.” A grumpy statement, but one that made Bèiké give a wet laugh all the same.
“I am so lucky to have you as a brother Wukong… the Valiant Victorious Fighting Buddha, strongest in the world. Brave old Sun.”
“…I don’t want to let go…”
Bèiké nodded, but took a deep breath and leaned back to give him her bravest smile. “Come! Let me celebrate your birthday early. No more tears! Let’s smile and make merry.”
It took convincing, and he wasn’t nearly as festivious as he normally was, but he eventually began to smile and laugh as they ate and drank. Some of the denizens of Mount Huaguo joining in on the merrymaking. Loving any excuse to celebrate, why not start the games early?
His eyes glittered at the gifts she had given him, the storm summoning whistle and the abyssal armor. He danced around and showed them off.
As the day grew brighter, more people joined in.
It was… fun.
Music played, the food was good, the games were chaotic and creative, everyone was laughing and smiling. One could almost forget that the Princess had a time limit…
But Bèiké could see when Sun Wukong remembered, he would randomly grow quiet and his brow would furrow. His hand gripping hers as if afraid that if he let go, she would disappear.
Bèiké did her sisterly duty and tried to ease his mind and keep conversation topics away from anything that may remind him. Today was about celebrating, sharing stories and making merry. She had even pulled him out to dance a couple times, both of them clumsy from the wine and making them laugh all the more.
As the sun began to set once more, the maiden of the waters knew she had to return…
She wasn’t about to lie and say that the thought of getting him drunk to the point he passed out, so she could leave without him noticing wasn’t enticing… but she ultimately decided it would be cruel to not give him a chance to say goodbye. And Wukong, seeing the change in his little sister’s demeanor and the far away look in her eye, felt his throat tighten.
“Must you leave already? Ba and Liu are about to get on the drums.” His hands gripping hers tightly.
She smiled sadly and gripped his hands back. “Come to the balcony with me Wukong… come tell me goodbye. Send me off with a smile.”
He snarled, but did so. His mind once again beginning to race as he thought of ways to fix the issue, heal her core…
And Bèiké gently tugged his fur. “You are going to hurt yourself if you keep trying to mend what’s already breaking. You have to let it shatter.”
The gaze he leveled on her was equal parts stubbornness, pain and manic. “How can you ask me to do nothing? I am Sun Wukong!”
Her cloud pavilion materialized as she gently held her brother’s face. “Wukong… I am hurting. My mind has shattered and it’s causing me so much pain… it hurts, and I am so sorry I’m not strong enough to deal with it.” She feels her voice choke as she thinks about what the Buddha told her. Takes a deep breath before smiling at her brother. “Those storms that are so out of control are destroying what is precious, you have always fought to keep your precious people safe. But this time, I have to be the one to fix things… you have to let me do this so that the pain can end.”
He trembled, his eyes squeezing shut as he let out a whine and crushed her in a tight hug.
“I swear to you… I will find a way to fix this. You must hold on young Pearl, promise me you will hold on.”
Bèiké bit her lip as she felt tears well up in her eyes once more… it would’ve been too easy to promise, to trust him, to let him shield her and depend on him…
But as she looked back behind him and saw the lives of the denizens of the mountain that were much more fragile, whom had already suffered and survived so much… whom she didn’t want to risk anymore than she inadvertently already had, she took a deep breath and settled her nerves. She raised her arms to hug him back. The monkey Guai who - from the start of his existence - didn’t know what it was to turn down a challenge.
“I trust in your strength Wukong… protect your people, I will never forgive myself if they come into harm when I am broken.”
He shook his head as he leaned back, giving her a hand as she settled onto her cloud pavilion. “I shall allow no harm to befall them, rest assured. You must focus on your own health. I will reach out to you soon.” He gave her hand one final squeeze before he released her and watched her float away.
Bèiké didn’t dare tell him that she wouldn’t be there to answer him come dawn, and she knew he would be angry at her for that. And she accepted that.
She knew in her heart that, should she ever be reincarnated, she would spend the next several lifetimes making up for the pain she would cause her dear brother when he found out.
She could only pray he would forgive her.

Bèiké would’ve liked to think she was being brave.
To sacrifice one’s life for the protection of others, especially including beloved friends and family should be an honorable act. And an act that one usually faced with their head held high.
But Bèiké couldn’t pretend that she wasn’t trembling.
The early morning consisted of the Princess spending her final peaceful moments with her family. They sat in silence, both having no words to say and too many to voice, and just holding each others hands.
As the sun began to rise, the Buddha had called upon them. Guiding them to a location in the heart of everything where the ceremony was to take place.
While the world was still calm, the Buddha and his monks set up the area, blessing it and preparing it for what the Jade Emperor and his ever attentive obligation demanded him to do.
The storms had broken free of the Buddha’s great Dharma moments ago, the world was dark even though it was meant to be the middle of the day.
Her beloved attendants had wanted to accompany her to her final destination, but she had forbidden it. Not wanting to risk them. Their goodbyes had been tearful and filled with vows and promises. Beike was unable to bring herself to look back as she walked away, knowing that if she did, she would’ve have the strength to do what needed to happen next.
She stood with her mother and father on an exposed piece of land in the middle of the ocean, they were in the heart of the storm. The honorable and noble dragon kings of the four cardinal directions risking their lives to hold back the storm, allowing the Jade Emperor and his family to stand in the eye of it.
Bèiké sat in the shallow water where the ocean met the sand as the weight of everything crashed upon her. The whisper-screams that the Buddha was still mercifully holding back slamming against the barrier of her mind, making her dizzy.
There was no specific sign or signal that indicated what exactly needed to be done, but it was like a shift in the wind. Her heart pounding in her chest.
She looked up at the black clouds as the monks around her began to chant and she felt her royal father’s strength and power begin to spread over the world and demand its submission. And she felt herself begin to respond to its demands, even as another part of her twisted in defiance and raged all the more.
It was a particularly painful thump that had her clenching her chest as Wukong’s words reverberated in her head.
“If I came up with nothing, had no pompous trickster cursed me, had no imperious scalawag tried to poison me somehow, I would simply assume it was an internal issue and I’d open myself up to take an intimate look.” …. “Take an intimate look….”
“In order to quell the storms, to spare the land and break your chains, you must offer that core to him. And with its Oceanic Dharma, he can restore the world. But in doing so… you will cease.” The Buddha’s words echoed as she realized truly what she had to do.
Her breath quickened as she forced herself to swallow down her fear. She closed her eyes as the faces of her family and friends flashed in her mind. The pain of those who had been lost to her lack of control, the faces of those who would be at risk if she didn’t do what she needed to do.
“I will cease… but they will survive…” She murmured as she felt her hand break past her fragile mortal shell of a body, easily finding her own core. “The sacrifice of one will preserve billions, the trade is worth it.”
She grit her teeth and prepared herself. “It is worth it.” She let out a pained cry as she gave a swift wrench and tore her core free. Hearing the horrified gasps and cries of her parents.
Tumblr media
As she held her core out to her father, and begged him to save… everyone, she quickly felt her strength fade.
Despite his horror, the Jade Emperor kept his composure. His strength and power moving his body instinctively to do what needed to be done. He took her core, the blood staining his hands, and the oceanic dharma that flowed within responded to his dominant presence.
He glowed as the wind kicked up and the sky filled with magnificent colors. Energy plunged through the earth and oceans as the balance between land and sea reentered equilibrium. Everything going back to how it was supposed to be and the effect almost immediately becoming apparent.
No longer shackled by a mortal shell, the waters fell back into balance and the world began to heal.
And as the Jade Emperor did his honor-bound commitment, Bèiké felt her mind settle, and the whispers fade. There was a pull to rejoin the waters as was her nature, but the mortal shell she was bound to still held her. She could feel herself fading, her body dying while still desperately trying to survive.
Her heart beating, her blood flowing, her breathing erratic. She distantly wondered if this is what mortals went through, the mind realizing what was happening while the body continued to fight.
The sobbing voice of her beloved mother caught her attention as she found herself embraced in her mother’s arms.
She tried to raise a hand to hold her mother back but found her body was no longer responding. And as she tried to respond to her mother’s desperate Pleas to not leave her, Bèiké found that her voice no longer worked.
As her breathing slowed, the clouds above them finally parted, revealing a truly beautiful view. A dawn of pinks, purples and golds…
It looks like Wukong…. Ahhh… I’m going to miss his birthday…. His heart is… going to…. Break…
As her vision faded to black, she heard a wailing scream that pierced the void…
Tumblr media
Her last thought was that it sounded like the purest heartbreak.

It had been sixty years since that day.
The world had long healed. The droughts had been banished, the floods dried up. The fishermen resumed their craft and taught the next generation and the next, and the dead had been buried and honored.
However, mortals still talked about the phenomenon that had been observed on the ocean those sixty years ago.
The magnificent lights and that feeling of protection and security followed by a great cry that shook the world. Most everyone cried that day after hearing that sound; mortals, beasts, Yaoguais and immortals alike wept.
But most memorable of all, was the utter lack of motion of the seas days after the great mourning.
Not a wave, not a breeze, not a current was seen or felt upon the ocean.
It was as though the entire ocean was dead.
It had taken around fourteen days for movement to circulate within and above the oceans again. And from there, life had returned to a relative normalcy.
However, it wasn’t so easy for everyone to simply move on.
The Victorious Fighting Buddha, Sun Wukong had stormed the heavenly palace in anger, demanding an explanation for the ocean’s state and to see his sister. It had taken the Lotus Prince, Nezha, and his lordship, Erlang Shen to placate and comfort the mourning Simian after the unfortunate news of her death had been shared.
The Stone simian had been leaving, intent on heading back to his mountain to grieve with his people, when he had been stopped by the still grieving Lady Mazu.
She had broken royal decorum and invited him over, offering for him to view her daughter’s memorial and offer some final words.
There had been no body, she had solemnly explained, for after her last breath, her body had melted and became water that fell through my hands… all that had remained were the pearls that had always adorned her, and I had collected as many as I could before they rolled and were lost to the water.
It was said that Wukong had broken down before the memorial of the Pearl Princess, though only the Lady Mazu would know for sure.
Though servants and attendants claimed to have seen the two afterwards sitting at a table and sharing stories. When Wukong had gotten up to leave, the goddess had gifted him a pearl that had belonged to the Maiden.
Sun Wukong had not left his mountain much after that, the king remaining dedicated to his kingdom.
Though, there were rumors that drifted around about how he and the phoenix maiden, and sometimes Erlang Shen, would visit that island in the middle of the ocean once a year on the anniversary of the great mourning.
What they did on that island, it couldn’t be said, but those who dared to venture near swore they heard the most haunting melody and a whistle that always seemed to summon a storm.

What a curious thing life is… always finding a way to exist even in places where you would think life would be impossible.
Everything in life has a cycle, for some it’s life and death, for others it’s a constant journey of recycling.
Water is one of the latter, it’s always been here as long as life has existed on this wonderful world. And even before. There is no true death of water, for the water that exists today is the same water that existed billions of years ago.
Water is one of the true immortals, ever present, life bringing and ever flowing.
The ocean is old, timeless and ever shifting, No one truly knows exactly how old the Waters of the world are.
Deep within the depths, the waters churned and swirled in a circular motion, as if creating a cacoon. And as life shaped and formed within it, the beating of a heart reverberated through the ocean.
A light the shown down upon the churning waters, and a voiced ever familiar called out; “You have yet to finish forming, but allow me to be the first to greet you. Welcome back, Maiden of the Worldly Waters… you have been greatly missed.”
Upon hearing that voice, The Maiden of the Waters, for the first time in sixty years, opened her eyes and blinked up at the light above her.
She felt small and yet large, feared but loved, wild and free… and more so than before, she felt unshackled and eternal, endless and ever renewing.
She felt like water.
Tumblr media
“Pray tell, Maiden of the Waters, do you know what you want to be?”
The Maiden felt her brow furrow as she thought, snippets of memory, some clear and some blurry filtering through her mind. A previous life, a mortal body… a broken mind.
She wasn’t that person anymore, part of her knew that. She wasn’t shackled by mortality, her mind wouldn’t break as that woman’s did.
Still…
“Maiden? My my, Do you remember who you are?”
The Maiden blinked back up at the light, and allowed her eyes to adjust, seeing the enlightened figure within.
She nodded as she answered.
“I am Bèiké, the Yín Zhēnzhū Gōngzhǔ, filial daughter, sworn sister, the deceptive Tranquil lady, The capricious and unpredictable waters… and I was loved.”

Garling being obsessed with the Shandia to the point of near fetishization is diabolical.
The only reason Dragon doesn’t kill him personally (aside from the fact that Imu’s whatever the fuckery would make that difficult/impossible) is because the nasty bastard would probably enjoy being killed by the object of his obsession.
(Prepare to get the ick something CRAZY.)
It started off normally enough really (well as normal as you can get for a celestial dragon anyway). 1 part fascination mixed with 1 part blindly hatred equals this perverse obsession.
How dare they, lording above him in the sky, do they think they're actually superior to him?! The heaven's chosen guardian, a beacon of holy light unlike any other! He was superior to them in every conceivable way!
..except the wings. He lacked their beautiful wings. Pure white like snow, soft like silk wings that that ungrateful fool Noland had described in his sparse scribblings. Garling wanted wings of his own so badly but no amount of money or medical research can give you the real deal, only a cheap copy.
He was much too good at his job to be given leave long enough to head for the sky so he made do as the years went on, found and hunted slaves with other oddities but it wasn’t the same. He filled canvas after canvas with images of his future conquest with a little help from Noland's journals but felt resigned to his fate on the ground. Is this how the plebs of the world lived, with the things they want out of their reach? It was truly dreadful.
And then he heard about it, Vice Admiral Garp had married. A woman who had the wings of silk and snow he so desperately yearned for. He had kept his composure when he spoke to the man, discussed only his future plans for the people of the clouds but on the inside he was a giddy mess. He had to keep touch his chin to make sure he wasn’t drooling. He even had to excuse himself to the bathroom to do things he’d never admit to.
To think one would have found their down to the seas and into the simian brute's bed, oh he was so jealous! Were her wings as perfect as he had always imagined? Feathers as uniform as they were described? Would they flap if he touched her just right?
He could take her, demand what is rightfully his but making a possible enemy out of Garp would cause too much attention. He’d wait. He’d be patient. He can very patient. He would see her one day and all would fall into place…
But it never did. Was she just some homebody or did she know? Did she suspect? Did she think of him with disgust in her voice and hatred in her eyes? God he hoped so. Like Captain Ahab to the white whale he yearned to cross her path but that blasted Nika must have been interfering with his plans.
And then the unnatural rise of the Orange Admiral who tried oh so hard to hide what he was. Didn’t he know none could escape him? And he certainly didn’t. Figarland had been beside himself with joy! Sure the boy wasn’t purebred but none of them were pure to begin with anyway! His copper skin, spiked hair, golden accessories..just as it said in the journals. He could pinpoint what he must have gotten from his mother, the nose, the smooth voice and of course the wings. He had been devastated upon seeing the state of them, who could take such perfection and desecrate it! Who would be so brazen as to take what belonged to a saint! No matter, he deal with them later…
But then (and how he is overcome by shivers at this memory) how the boy had looked at him. First with fear but then his anger, his righteous fury! How enchanting, how mesmerizing! He looked like wanted to split Figarland's skull open and he almost wanted to let him try. He’d never be able to do it of course but it would be a cute struggle.
He swore after that meeting he would have the both of them, Garp be damned. They would be so grateful to bask in him, such a joyous gift bestowed upon their unworthy souls. Regardless of the outcome, be it a fight or surrender, he would have gotten what he wanted.
What he has always deserved.

Finally at the Red Boy arc! I'm so excited to release the gremlin child muahahahaha!
I may have taken some inspiration from my own younger siblings (I have like 6 or smt? idk) when it came to writing Red Boy, so I'm excited to finally have him in the fic!
Dove Masterlist:
Feetus Yeeted
A chill sends goosebumps up your arms, the cool autumn air a frosty reminder of the weather to come. Dew shines on the sparse patches of grass on the mountain road you travel, the trees lining the path few and far between. Their branches are bare, some still clinging to the few rust-coloured leaves they have left, those that had already fallen drift through the breeze.
Your group marches up the path, somewhat groggy from your early-morning hike. Wujing guides Ao lie with Tripitaka on his back, Wukong floating by his side on his cloud while you and Bajie bring up the rear.
Pigsy readjusts the group’s luggage in his hold, huffing a bit as he does. “Master, you really should have considered staying in that Black Rooster Kingdom. Think of the luxuries we could have now if we stayed there.”
Sandy looks back at the pig demon with a laugh. “Brother, you know Master would never think of accepting such an offer.”
“Wujing is right, I intend to see our pilgrimage through to the end. Nothing could defer me from that.” Tripitaka hums, keeping his attention on the road ahead.
“Besides, that demon had the entire royal court wrapped around his finger.” You look over to your friend to add to the conversation. “I don’t think I could live there either, not after what they went through.”
You glance up to see what Monkey has to contribute, only to notice his eyes practically glued to the sky. It’s hard not to give him a bit of a funny look. Is he lost in thought? There doesn’t seem to be anything interesting going on up there, what else could he be doing?
Before you can ask what is on the simian’s mind, he gives a shout. “Master, get down! Now!” He leaps off his cloud and tackles Tripitaka off the horse. At his warning, you quickly take your bow into your hands while Bajie equips his rake. Sandy stands in front of the group, ready to defend his master while you search the skies for the incoming threat.
…But there is no threat. Not that you can see.
Your confusion seems to be shared as Pigsy frowns, his head whipping back and forth in anticipation for an incoming strike that never arrives. “…Are we under attack?”
Silence stretches over your group before Wukong looks back up at the sky, frowning a bit as he sees what you all do, nothing. “Huh, looks like we scared them off. It’s okay now.” He shrugs, getting back onto his feet and dusting himself off.
Tripitaka looks up at him from the ground, his expression emitting the same level of confusion you feel. “What did you see?”
“It was like some big ball of fire!” The monkey answers, keeping his eyes on the sky as he helps his master up. “It was coming right for us, it’s a good thing I saw it when I did.”
You share a look with the rest of your friends, disbelief evident on all of you. There was no ball of fire that you could see, and from the looks on his brother’s faces, Sun Wukong seems to be the only one to have seen it. You know he has the best vision in your group, but you’re unsure how all of you could have missed something that would be so eye-catching.
Tripitaka clears his throat, his smile a little worried. “Thank you, Pilgrim Sun… but if it’s alright, can I get back on the horse now?”
“Of course! I’ll just keep an eye out for any more fireballs.” He helps the monk back onto his horse before jumping back onto his cloud.
The monk looks at his disciple from the side of his eye, chuckling with a bit of unease. “Okay, then.”
With the matter… somewhat resolved, your group carries on with the morning, hiking up the mountain while Sun Wukong keeps an eye out for whatever he saw.
Just when your mind is ready to put aside the oddity of the moment, a voice echoes through the mountain. It’s faint, but enough for Tripitaka to look up in response. “Do you hear that?” He asks, looking around in worry. You do the same, a focused frown taking over your features as you strain to hear it.
Pigsy shifts the weight of the luggage around as he joins you in your attempts to find the source. “Is someone calling for help?”
“I don’t hear anything.” Wukong frowns, his cloud slowing to a stop.
You hear it again, the voice almost shrill. “It sounds like someone might be in trouble.” You take a step, but before you can transform to take flight, Wukong grabs your arm.
“Why don’t I go check it out?” He smiles, taking you a bit off guard. The Monkey King, offering to help a stranger without Tripitaka asking him to? “You all keep moving, I’ll catch up in a bit.”
He leaves no room for argument, his cloud soaring up high and quickly out of sight. Once he does, you share a bit of a confused look with the rest of your friends. “I’m not the only one who thinks he’s being weird, right? Is letting him go off right now a good idea?” You ask the group, Tripitaka, Pigsy, and Sandy all mumbling their responses.
“I am too tired to bother thinking about it too hard.”
“It scares me when he acts strange like that.”
“As long as he comes back without any blood on his clothes, we should be fine.”
You sigh, looking back at where you had last seen the monkey, doing your best to put aside your concerns before continuing on the road.
Despite the slower pace you take to wait for your friend, the walk goes by in a bit of a blur. You stay behind the others, hoping to catch a glimpse of the sage as you walk. When you eventually do, he jumps down next to you and dismounts his cloud. The piece of sky dissipates as you take in the lack of blood stains on his person, a good sign.
He dusts himself off while everyone else turns back to hear of his findings. “I didn’t see anything, I couldn’t even make out whatever distress calls you were hearing.” Wukong explains, resting his hands on his sides.
Tripitaka frowns before looking up. You do the same, realising you too hear nothing now. Strange, you didn’t go too far. The monk hums as he realises the same thing you do. “Hm, I don’t either.”
You look back at Wukong, your eyes searching for any tells on his face. You’ve seen him put on acts before, and this didn’t feel like the great sage you’ve spent the last couple of years with. Though, he hasn’t quite been himself for some time now.
Since your time being temporarily engaged to Jian Yu, he’s been… what’s the word, jumpy? It’s the best description you can think of, maybe aside from ‘on edge’. Especially when it comes to strangers on the road. The monkey demon always became dismissive around newcomers, doing his best to end encounters as quickly as possible.
Originally, his behaviour led you to believe he was acting like this because those strangers were demons in disguise, but that was almost never the case. You would ask him after parting ways with these strangers, but he would say they were regular travellers without a single malicious bone in their body! Even after confirming these strangers were harmless, it didn’t stop him from acting– maybe the best word to describe it is protective.
You’ve mentioned your thoughts on the matter to Wujing before, thinking he would have some insightful words to share on the matter, but he seemed almost oblivious to the change in your friend.
You cast the monkey man with a careful look once the group resumes the journey, Wukong now hanging back with you behind the others. His expression seems focused, but on what, you cannot say. His gaze is still fixed to the sky “Are you alright?”
The question is enough to get him to turn his eyes over to you, his focus masked with a smile. “Just peachy, why do you ask?”
“I don’t know, I’m just hoping you didn’t find whoever was screaming and kill them.” You hum, looking ahead to the rest of your friends while you talk.
Wukong scoffs playfully. “Please, do you think I would be able to clean all the blood off myself so quickly?”
“I did take note of the lack of stains.” You smile, peeking at him from the side of your vision.
He returns the look to you, but it doesn’t stay long. “Just, uh, stay close to Master, will you? I don’t have a good feeling about this mountain and it will be easier for me if you’re together.”
The request is enough to make you chuckle, what does he mean by that? Does he really think he has to worry over both you and Tripitaka? “You don’t have to worry about me, Monkey-Man. Or, did you forget about how we fought the Yellow-Robe Demon together? Or what about the battle with the Gold and Silver-Horned brothers?” You remind him, watching carefully for his response.
He looks away at the reminders, scratching the back of his head as he does. “I know, but I would still feel better knowing I could protect you both.”
You can’t help but frown a bit. Does he not think you are capable of protecting yourself? His job is to tend to Tripitaka, not fret over you. This is the exact kind of thing he’s been doing recently, you wish you could know why he’s been acting like this.
Still, if staying near the monk would help him to focus on his actual job, then you could deal with his somewhat-offensive request. That way, you’ll also be closer to stop any threats yourself. “Alright, if it helps you relax a bit, I will.” You smile, moving up to catch up with the rest of the group.
Part of you wants to question your friend on his recent behaviour, but you suppose it would be better to wait. With how anxious he seems at the moment, any attempt to prod at him for information will be fruitless. Maybe after you all rest for a meal, or if you find a good place to set up camp later in the day.
It can be a little difficult to understand Sun Wukong. He is incredibly cunning, you actually admire his wit and strategic mind. However, he has this nasty habit of explaining his process of thought after he’s already started whatever course of action he believes is best. He tends to be right, but leaves the rest of you in the dark with little to no context for his actions. Now, with how he’s been acting, it’s been even more difficult to understand what has been going on in his mind.
Before you can delve any deeper into thought, Wukong’s voice snaps you back into reality. “Master, get down!” He shouts, jumping into action yet again and pulling the monk off Ao Lie by his leg. Everyone quickly jumps into position again, and you stand over the two on the ground protectively with Bajie and Wujing at your side. The arrow on your bowstring draws back, ready to fire at any incoming enemy.
But there is no enemy, not that you can see. Wukong looks up with a frown, scanning the skies for whatever he might have seen. “Huh, I guess it was another false alarm.”
Tripitaka pushes his disciple off of him, casting the demon with a sour look. “Wukong, do you have to knock me off the horse every time you think you see something?! I’d rather not taste any dirt in my mouth.”
“Sorry, Master, it was that fireball again!” Wukong explains while standing back up, offering his master a hand to help him up as well.
Pigsy leans over to you and Wujing as Wukong helps the man up. “It sounds like someone is losing it.”
Sandy shakes his head. “Brother Sun has the best sight out of all of us. Maybe he just thought something was closer than it really is.” The three of you look over to the oldest disciple as he looks up to the sky, his eyes narrowed.
“…Maybe.” You hum, hoping for the sake of your group that it must be the case.
You’re not given much time to think about the monkey any more before you hear a voice calling again. “Help, please!”
“I know I heard somebody that time.” You didn’t imagine it. Not only that, the voice sounds even closer now. Whoever this is, they sound young. Really young. With the life of who might possibly be a child on the line, you transform with a leap into the air to find the voice’s owner with an aerial view.
“Dove, wait!” Wukong calls for you, but you don’t bother to wait, not when a child could be in need of saving.
You fly up high, waiting to hear the voice again before flying towards it. Following the cries, you catch sight of a child tied and suspended from a tree. It’s a young boy, wailing for help as he dangles in the air. His dark hair is dishevelled, some of it obscuring his face. He doesn’t look much older than seven or eight years old, and he’s bruised and beaten all over.
Who could have hurt this poor boy?! You act quickly, landing atop his shoulder and alerting him to your presence. Before he can panic, you begin to use your gift to soothe him. His cries falter, the boy’s head turning to look up at you as you calm him down.
“Huh… what?” He sniffles, confusion evident on his face. “What is this?”
Once he is calm enough, you fly up onto the branch he is suspended from and return to your normal form. “It is alright, child. I will get you down from here.”
The boy looks up at you with his mouth agape, his eyes as wide as his open mouth. All he manages to do is stare for a moment. “Wha– what did you do to me? Are you a goddess under the guise of a bird?” He asks, and you can’t stop the smile that spreads on your face from the question.
“I am nothing of the sort, but that does not mean I can’t help a stranger in need.” You answer. Taking the rope in hand, you pull the boy up– he’s surprisingly light– until he is sitting on the branch with you.
Just as you begin to untie the boy, Wukong’s voice calls out in a panic. “Dove, what are you doing?!” You look up to find your friends rushing to the tree you rest on, the others sharing a look of confusion while Sun Wukong narrows his gaze up at you and the boy.
“What does it look like I’m doing?!” You shout back as they approach, working at the knots keeping the rope together before they begin to slacken around the boy.
Once your friends are close enough and you free the boy of his restraints, you’re able to hand the child to Sandy and get him down to the ground. The river demon is careful to set him down gently. “What happened to you, child?” He asks as you climb down from the tree.
The boy rubs his arms, which are covered in red marks from the rope. “My home was plundered by thieves and bandits.” He explains, looking between you and the rest of your friends. “They killed my father and took my mother with them! They wanted to kill me as well, but my mother convinced them to spare me. They are the ones who left me tied to this tree to die from starvation and exposure.”
You frown as he tells his story, your heart aching for the boy. Losing your family so suddenly is something you can understand. He doesn’t even look much younger than you were when your village was attacked. This poor boy has gone through so much.
You look up at Tripitaka, the man looking down at the child with a look of sympathy. When he catches your eye, he nods, almost reading your mind. With his agreement, you crouch down to the boy. “Tell us, what is your name?”
“I am called Red Boy, Miss.” He replies, and you offer him a kind smile.
You pat his shoulder lightly. “Alright, Red Boy, I’m sure we can help you.”
The boy’s face brightens, but before he can respond, Sun Wukong hums aloud. “Are we sure we believe him?”
Your head swivels back to face him, the others all sharing your look of bewilderment as he continues. “I mean, look at him. He’s just been made an orphan and he can’t even bother to cry about it.”
His reasoning earns him wide-eyed looks of shock from everyone. “I already used my gift to calm him down… why would you say something so–” You can’t even find the words, unsure of how to respond. How can you respond to that?!
Wukong’s tail flicks in annoyance as you rise to stand again. “What are we meant to do with him? He can’t join us, and it isn’t as though we can burden the next person we find with some boy.”
“I still have my maternal family!” Red Boy quickly speaks up. “My aunties are just north of this mountain, and I have cousins there as well. If you could take me to them, I am sure they can reward you for your services. They have plenty of food, and can give you jewellery a-and whatever you want!”
Wukong steps forward, crouching down to face the boy directly now. “How do we know what your saying is the truth? Or that your little fable is even real?”
“Wukong!” You shoot the monkey demon a glare, and he glances back with an irritated look.
“What? It doesn’t make much sense to me.” He shrugs. “His mother begs for his life, so they just leave him to suffer a slower death? I would have at least put him out of his misery–”
Even Pigsy steps in at this point. “Brother, why are you interrogating the boy? If he wants to take us to be fed by his family, I say we let him.”
“It is also the right thing to do.” Tripitaka adds on, giving his two disciples an unimpressed look.
Pigsy looks away to clear his throat. “Yes, it’s the right thing to do.”
Wukong rises to his feet with a scoff, and you can’t stop the look you give him. What is his problem? Yes, he’s been more excitable lately, but this is something else entirely.
Tripitaka rides up to the child. “Red Boy, why don’t you ride with me? You must be exhausted after everything you’ve had to endure.”
The boy looks a bit surprised at the offer, but quickly looks away. “Um, I don’t know. I have never ridden on horseback before.”
The monk nods with a smile. “That is alright, would you like one of my disciples to carry you?”
At his offer, the boy’s eyes brighten a bit. Surprisingly, so does Wukong’s. “Master, I can–”
“Can the woman carry me?” Red Boy asks, cutting off the sage before he can finish. “She was the one who found me, I like her.” He looks over to you with a wide smile, either unaware of or ignoring the glare Wukong gives him when he asks.
You give him a bit of a surprised look yourself, not expecting the request. Tripitaka lets out a bit of an awkward laugh. “She isn’t one of my disciples.”
Wukong huffs, very clearly annoyed. “Just let me carry you, boy, I am much stronger than my brothers. Besides, I can carry you for much longer than Dove could.” He offers, and you feel your brow twitch at his last comment.
His little, ‘stay close to Tripitaka for me’ request was one thing, but that hit a nerve. “I can carry you, Red Boy, I don’t mind.” You smile at the child, his eyes lighting up when you do.
You make eye contact with Sun Wukong as you kneel down for the boy to get onto your back. “I’m much stronger than I look.” Pigsy does his best to conceal a snort of laughter, Sandy doing a bit better than him while Wukong flares his nostrils in irritation.
Ignoring his huffing and puffing, you rise to your feet. With the boy now on your back, you continue your hike through the mountain with your friends, Wukong lagging behind while his brothers walk up front with Tripitaka and you just behind them. As you all walk, you find yourself in conversation with the very curious Red Boy.
“If you’re not a goddess, then what are you?” He asks, laying his head down on your shoulder as you walk.
“I am a human, the same as you.”
“What did you do to me in the tree?”
“I only did what I could to calm you down, it’s a gift I’ve been given by my master.”
“How long have you had it?”
“Since I was a little girl. About your age, I think.”
The boy’s wide-eyed look he gives you from over your shoulder warms your heart a bit. “Incredible! You know, Miss, I have never felt such a tranquil feeling in my life!”
“You speak quite well for a young boy.” You note, amused by his excitement.
“I have been told I am very mature for my age.” He beams, making you laugh.
“You sound like it.” You return the look before hearing Bajie chuckle from in front of you.
He nudges Sandy’s arm, and the two look back at you. “It looks as though our feathered friend has found herself a fan.” He muses, and you notice him look back at Sun Wukong. You hear the older disciple grumble something under his breath, and although you can’t make out the words, Red Boy looks back at him and snickers.
Your brow furrows a bit. “What’s so funny, Red Boy?”
“Your monkey friend amuses me.” He admits, and you look over your shoulder at him with some confusion. Despite all the aggression from him, Red Boy doesn’t seem all that frightened of Sun Wukong.
His answer only seems to aggravate the Monkey King even more. “Oh, yeah? What do you find so amusing about me?”
“Your face is very comical.” Red Boy’s blunt answer earns a snort of laughter from you, the response more out of how unexpected his words are. He really does not hold back from saying what he thinks. “I have never seen such a terrifyingly angry expression, it’s almost hilarious.”
Wukong doesn’t seem to find his words as amusing as you do. “Trust me, kid, I can make it scarier.”
“Okay, let’s not fight with the child.” You roll your eyes. Part of you wants to join in on teasing your friend to get a laugh out of the kid, but it’s clear Monkey wouldn’t take it well at the moment. This entire detour with the boy has him in a bad mood.
He grunts at your dismissal, his tail flicking once more. Red Boy watches him for a moment, eyes studying the monkey demon before his eyebrows shoot up in some sort of realisation. “Ohh, I understand. You are upset because you just want the woman to yourself.”
You trip over your own feet at his words, barely catching yourself to stop the both of you from crashing to the ground. Wujing hunches over into a coughing fit when he hears the boy, Pigsy choking back laughter while Tripitaka looks back at him in bewilderment, slack-jawed.
Despite the violent effect of his words on your friends and the violent shade of red on your face, he continues, now whispering into your ear. “My mother always told me that men want only one thing, especially demon men like him.” He looks back at Sun Wukong, who you can’t even turn to for the moment from the embarrassment alone.
Despite the shock of his words, you do your best to regain your composure. “I think you misunderstand, Red Boy.”
He puts his head back on your shoulder, with a face so innocent you can hardly believe such accusations are coming out of it. “You should be careful, Miss. You seem like such a caring person, it has to be a miracle that a demon like him hasn’t given into his evil urges–”
The boy doesn’t get a chance to continue before he’s ripped away from your back. You stumble onto the ground from the action, and before you have the chance to find your bearings, Sun Wukong lifts Red Boy into the air and throws him down the mountain.
“Good riddance.” Wukong snarls, the silence that follows his words are deafening. You stare up at him in shock, at a complete loss for words as he watches the boy fall, the wind howling after him.
When you finally let the moment sink in, you jump back to your feet, wind howling in your ears. “Wukong! What the hell have you done?!”
“Me?!” He looks back at you, clearly offended. “What were you all doing?! That child was a demon in disguise!”
“What?” You frown, the Monkey King grumbling with impatience.
“I would have taken care of him more gracefully, but that brat couldn’t help running his disgusting little mouth.” He rests his hands on his sides, his actions from today now making sense.
A few autumn leaves rush by in the wind as you let out a tired sigh and Sandy steps in. “Why didn’t you say anything before?!”
He scoffs. “Would you have believed me?”
“Yes!” His eyes widen a bit at your exasperated response. “We’ve come far enough on this journey that I trust your judgement, Wukong! If you say someone is a demon, we'll believe you, but you have to be clear and actually say something. Throwing what we think is a little boy off a mountain might give Tripitaka and I heart failure before we reach the scriptures!”
You step back to take a breath, Wukong quiet in response to your lecturing. So many things just happened, you need a minute to recollect your thoughts. You barely even processed what Red Boy was saying before he was ripped from your back. It was all so embarrassing, you can still feel the warmth in your cheeks. Demon or not, that was– gah!
“Uh, guys?” Pigsy pulls you from your thoughts, a frown set in his features. “Is it just me, or is it getting darker?”
The group joins him in observing the sky, the wind picking up even more. You have to shield your face from the gale that pushes past you, your heart sinking as you spot dark clouds circling from above. The sun disappears, shrouding everything in darkness just as more leaves start to pick up off the ground, obscuring your vision. You look to and fro wildly for sight of your friends as the winds grow more violent. It’s a struggle to keep your footing as the invisible force pushes you back.
The sound of Tripitaka’s screams make your heart race. Turning to the source of his cries, you are able to make out a vague silhouette of Ao Lie. Tripitaka is no longer on the horse, his hands barely hanging onto the reins as his body is pulled upwards to the dark clouds. “Tripitaka!”
“Master!” You hear Wukong somewhere to your right before he rushes past you. He seems to be the only one able to push through the wind, Sandy and Pigsy struggling to keep their footing as much as you are. You try your best to move towards the flying monk, fighting the wind at each step.
You’re hardly able to make any progress before ducking your head down to shield your face from loose pebbles and twigs, all flying through the wind haphazardly. Just as you go to take another step, you feel the wind push back against you rougher than before, shoving you off balance enough to make you tumble back.
A shout escapes from you as you fall, but you never make contact with the ground. Instead, you feel yourself lifting higher, twisting and turning with no control over where you go.
“Dove!” Wukong’s voice is faint, accompanied by the thunder of the wind carrying you into the air. You can just make out a figure rushing towards you, Sun Wukong’s hand outstretched. Your hand reaches out for his, so close you can almost touch. But he’s too far.
His fingers just brush your own before you’re thrusted up into the sky. Wukong’s silhouette grows smaller before vanishing completely, obscured by the hordes of debris flying amidst your now darkened world. You shield your face again to protect it before quickly peeking out for any sign of something stable to hold onto. With how much the wind is tossing you about, it’s difficult to maintain any sense of where the ground is.
In the midst of your tumbling through the air, you hear Tripitaka calling out for you and the others. You call out for him, reaching out blindly in the hopes that you are close enough to hold onto each other. Luckily enough, you find a hand to hold, it grabs you firmly the second you make contact. The wave of confidence is short-lived, though, when you realise the hand is too small to be Tripitaka.
It’s too late, you feel yourself being pulled sharply in one direction. In a flash, your surroundings morph, the wind suddenly dropping as you feel yourself roll onto the ground of a hard stone floor. The darkness and debris clouding your vision is replaced with the dim light of torches, the air in whatever cave you now appear to be in is dry and hot.
With a grunt, Tripitaka falls a little ways next to you, landing on his side. “Tripitaka!” You rush over to make sure he’s okay, looking for any injuries as he pushes himself to sit up. He looks at you, confused, and before either of you can say another word, you’re alerted to the presence of another by the sound of their cackling.
“He tried to throw me!” You act quickly, pulling out your dagger and putting a protective arm around the monk as you turn to face your unwanted company. Before you, the boy from before stands with his arms crossed, different than before. His dark hair is now a fiery red that reaches down his back, thick and wild. Bullish horns poke through the top of his head. His ears also now resemble that of a bull, with a thin tail whipping behind him to match. His tattered clothes are now replaced with a dark red kilt, a few scorch marks darkening the material in different spots.
The demon child barks out a laugh. “I knew that ape had to be brash, but trying to kill me before I even did anything?!” His grin stretches from ear to ear and you frown a bit as you look at the boy who stands several metres away from you and Tripitaka.
Yes, this is a demon… but he’s just some kid. What are you meant to do in this situation, fight a child? Put him on a time-out? You glance back at Tripitaka, the monk looking just as confused as you are. Child or not, you can’t imagine the boy has taken the two of you here without malicious intent. “I don’t think you have much room to talk, kid. Haven’t you heard it’s rude to play tricks on people?”
Red Boy snickers. “Not when it comes to food, Miss. Father says anything goes for food. He’ll love that I caught the Golden Cicada!” He beams, eyes practically sparkling as he stares down your friend.
The two of you rise to your feet with your dagger still in hand, Tripitaka frowning a bit at the boy while you scan the area for an exit. “You… you want to eat us?”
Whatever cave you seem to be in, you notice natural light pouring in from an opening just behind the demon boy. “You sound surprised.” He tilts his head a bit to the side. “I’ve had my underlings tell me all about you, Tang Monk. Word travels fast, and I have heard all about your travels on your pursuit to the Thunderclap Monastery. It’s too bad you’ll never make it.” He shrugs, uncaring for your situation.
“That’s enough.” You keep a hand over Tripitaka’s shoulder as you stare down the child. “If you’ve heard of our travels, you know we’ve taken care of plenty of other demons like you.”
The boy flashes a knowing smile. “Oh, I’m not like the demons you’ve already met.” He giggles, his laughter a bizarre mix of sinister and extremely gleeful. “Besides, you don’t have to worry, Miss. I won’t eat you if you don’t want me to.”
Huh. “What.”
“I just want you to do what you did before! I’ve never felt anything like it!” He exclaims, his eyes almost sparkling with a childish glee that confused your already-overworking head. The way he speaks seems so innocent, but his words are packed with evil intent.
Frowning a bit at the boy, you take a step closer and gesture to Tripitaka from behind your back to start moving towards what you assume is the cave entrance. “…Really?”
“Yes!” He smiles widely, and you take another look around the cave as Tripitaka starts to move.
You lower your dagger a bit and take another step towards the boy. “Where is your father?”
Red Boy’s smile drops a bit, his excitement reining in. “I will have my men send him an invitation once I’ve taken care of the monk’s disciples.”
“And your mother?” You press, and the boy looks away.
“She has business to attend to this time of year, so father and I will be dining on our own.” He explains, his posture is a bit straighter now as he smiles at you politely. “I would extend an invitation to you as well, but I assume you wouldn’t want any of the Tang Monk’s meat. You are vegetarian, aren’t you?”
…Also Tripitaka is your friend. Eating your friend is multiple layers of wrong. You glance over at the monk, now closer to the entrance and behind Red Boy’s line of sight. You intend to keep it that way, and crouch down to get onto the same eye-level as the demon child. “Are you saying you live on your own?”
The question seems to offend him, making the boy scoff. “Yes, and? I am plenty old enough to take care of myself! I’m the king of this mountain! I’ve been in command of my army since I took my first steps.”
“…I find that hard to believe.” You frown just before the sounds of Tripitaka screaming catch both your ears.
Red Boy quickly whips around to see the monk being dragged back into the cave by two demon guards, and you curse to yourself under your breath. The demon child frowns. “Where do you think you’re–”
Before he can finish, you drape the boy up into your arms, pressing the dagger to his throat. “Release the monk!” You shout to the demon guards, both of them freezing at your sudden action while you try not to think of how strange it feels to be threatening a little kid.
“Let go of me!” Red Boy shouts, squirming in an attempt to get out of your hold, his hands trying to pull at your arm.
You keep your grip on the boy firm. “I will put you down once your underlings let go of the Tang Monk.” You try to reassure him, glaring at the two demons. “Do it!”
The guards remain still, their eyes trained onto their child boss. You see Tripitaka’s face drop, and before you can react to the growing warmth emitting from Red Boy’s hand, scarlet flames shoot from his mouth. “I said, let go!” The fire shoots at your arm holding up the boy, making you shout out in pain before dropping him. Your dagger falls to the ground as you clutch your arm close to your person. The boy scrambles back over to his men, casting you with a look of betrayal.
“Ugh, that was rude!” He sneers before looking up at his men. “Lock them both up! We have to get ready for when the others arrive.” He orders them, the men quickly jumping into action. One grabs you by your uninjured arm, pulling you over before him and his fellow guard drag you further into the cave.
You wince, looking down at the burn on your arm. A little demon kid that breathes fire, huh? That is a first. You’re gonna have to be smart to get out of this one.

Family of Sages
I mentioned in this post about possible Celestial Water Monkeys; that one Ming-dynasty opera (written nearly 200 years before the Jttw novel) depicts the "Wuzhiqi" (a simian water demon) as a sister to Sun Wukong.
@journeytothewestresearch did an article or two on this particular play, and how there's a possibility of there being multiple "Great Sages" throughout folklore.
The play itself is pretty bawdy given that it's writer was known for adult comedy; with "Sun Xingzhe" being a bit of horndog (only stopped by the circlet), based on a popular cryptid of the time infamous for stealing women.
Other details include;
Red Boy (true name being Ainu’er) being the son of the Bodhisattva Manjushri and the ancient demon-mother-goddess Hariti (comparable to the Echidna of Greek mythology).
The nine skulls on Sha Wujing's neck representing the nine previous lives of the Golden Cicada. (cool af)
Zhu Bajie being afraid of nothing (hah!) but Erlang's dog Xiaotian Quan.
Princess Iron Fan being unmarried, to which Sun Xingzhe offers to be her husband (guess people were shipping them even back then, explains Goku and Chichi).
Tripitaka returning to Chang'an without his pilgrim buddies, instead the Buddha gives him four bodyguards of his own for the return trip. The demons aren't allowed go back East. Kinda sad.
So it's best to take the characterisation with a grain of salt, though it has some cool ideas.
The family sound off is presented as this:
"We are five brothers and sisters: my elder sister is Lishan Laomu [離山老母, Venerable Mother of Mount Li], my second sister Wuzhiqi Shengmu [巫支祇聖母, Holy Mother Wuzhiqi]; my older brother is Qitian Dasheng [齊天大聖, Great Sage Equaling Heaven], I myself am Tongtian Dasheng [通天大聖, Great Sage Reaching Heaven], and my younger brother Shuashua Sanlang [耍耍三郎]"
Wukong introduces himself as "Tongtian Dasheng [通天大聖, Great Sage Reaching Heaven]". But his older brother has the title of Qitian Dasheng [齊天大聖, Great Sage Equaling Heaven].
Another later story mentioned in the article has the "Cinnabar Cloud Great Sage/Danxia Dasheng"; a red-furred staff-wielding monkey who acts as an antagonist towards the main goddess character. Curiously is described as both a peach thief, a survivor of Laozi's furnace, and a frequent identity-stealer (possible Six Eared Macaque?). He is punished for being so naughty by getting neutered (ouch).
And of course there is the God of Thunder Leigong aka "Sire/Duke of Thunder", who is often depicted as a celestial monkey/ape working as the muscle and executioner for the Jade Emperor. Became immortal after eating a Peach dropped by a fox demon (Jiuweihuli?) arguing with Celestial soldiers. Is married to the Goddess of Lightning Dianmu, who lights up the sky to help her husband see his targets. He is said to be one of Five Brothers, leading to more connections.
So theres;
Lishan Laomu/"Venerable Mother of Mount Li" - Eldest sister/sibling. Curiously named after a popular goddess of the same name said to be equal in power to Nüwa, and possible Mother Nature itself. Said goddess appears in Jttw as a companion of Guanyin, and helps out Wukong when the rest of the hang were poisoned.
Wuzhiqi Shemu/"Holy Mother Wuzhiqi" - Second elder sister. Her name is associated with an aquatic flood demon with a stretchy neck - bound to the bottom of mountain/sea by Yu the Great (original owner of the Ruyi Jingu Bang) with iron chains.
Qitian Dasheng/"Great Sage Equaling Heaven" - older brother. Has the traditional "Great Sage Equal to Heaven" title. Makes me think of Dasheng from HIB.
Tongtian Dasheng/"Great Sage Reaching Heaven" - second brother aka the version of Sun Wukong/Xingzhe in the play. Is closer to "Quagmire" than Sun Wukong tbh.
Shuashua Sanlang/"Playful Third Brother" - youngest brother. Not much is said about him. His name literally means "Playful Third Brother". Might be the baby of the family.
+Danxia Dasheng/"Cinnabar Cloud Great Sage" - red-furred Wukong double. Got neutered for being naughty.
+Leigong/Duke of Thunder - Actual thunder god.
This gang of monkeys siblings is likely what led to the depiction of the "Four Stalwart Generals" who are Wukong's closest monkey companions. But now I'm imagining an universe/au where the Stalwarts are all similarly orphaned celestial monkeys of deferring elements who adopted one another.
Danxia/Cinnabar Cloud is an odd mix of both Wukong and the Six Eared Macaque. Possible kid? Maybe inspired ideas of Wukong being red furred. His shenanigans even remind me of Monkey from the netflix Monkey King (2023).
And of course Leigong... Jade Emperor sends a monkey to kill a monkey, and is shocked when Wukong survives. Leigong is like an old blue-collar worker who refuses to work if it violates his union rights - even orders from the King of the Universe.

Hello! If the request are open, may I ask for a Yan Wukong x Fem Reader x Yan Macaque (romantically) where Reader tries to avoid them to have a time for herself or being with her own friends? I just imagine those two monkeys being the clingy and jealous cats they are XD
Thank you so much! ♡♡♡
Of course! Thank you so much for your request! I really enjoyed writing this one, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did writing it!
Tumblr media
YAN!SUN WUKONG X FEM!READER X YAN!MACAQUE
TW/CW; mentions of alcohol/drinking, slight for, vomiting (because of alcohol), very minor character death
Clicking open the lock to your bedroom window, you took one last glance back at the two simians splayed in your bed; both clutching pillows you’d put in your place. You were thankful for those house canceling earmuffs you got for Macaque…
If not for them, he’d certainly have caught you trying to sneak out by now and dragged you back under the covers.
But you weren’t going to let that happen… you’d waited for too long to go out clubbing with your friends again. Carefully ducking under the window you’d opened, you shuffled out onto the sidewalk and carefully shut the window back.
You grabbed your bag off the ground and made your way down the sidewalk, heels clicking against the concrete rapidly as you made your way to the club.
Finally making your way there you squinted at the fluorescent lights that displayed the name; “The June Joint”.
You opened the door and were met with the scent of what you could only assume was a mix of BO, alcohol, and fruity vapes. You got over it soon when you saw your friends, rushing over to them and saying your hellos. It soon progressed to you all dancing drunkly on the dance floor… you couldn’t even hear the song playing; let alone if they were playing one at all.
You’d promised yourself you’d only have one drink tonight, but that one drink soon turned into two, and a few shots. Feeling a bit queasy you wobbled your way to the bar to get ahold of yourself. The were playing ‘Copacabana’ and as much as you wanted to dance right now, a migraine was starting to form at a splitting pace.
You fished your phone out of your bra, immediately sobering up in horror when you read the notifications… 13 missed calls, 57 unread messages.
“Oh, shit.” You scrambled to the entrance of the club; only to be dragged back by a clammy hand. “C’mon pretty girl, no need to rush… come dance with me and my guys and we’ll give you something worthwhile..” the man slurred. With a grimace you tried to take your arm back… but he had a real good grip.
“I’m sorry… I’d love to. But I’m taken, I need to get home too.” And at those words it almost seemed like it summoned two other men, tatted out and brooding. “He doesn’t gotta know. Besides I’m sure I can give you so much more than a shrimp-dick that you’re dati—“
CRACK…
His clammy hand fell from your arm as you stared down at the crumpled figure in horror, silence wafted over the club before screams rang out. You noticed a familiar staff end cascaded with golden clouds embroidered into it. uh oh..
Amidst the chaos you were tugged back by another hand, craning your neck to see Macaque holding you close and glowering at Wukong, who was beating the corpse of the man who dared to touch you to a bloody pull.
“That idiot… he could’ve gotten that disgusting man’s blood on you.” Macaque snarled lowly as he lay his head on top of yours, waiting for Wukong to finish beating the hell out of an already dead man.
When finished, Wukong looked back at you while slightly panting from exertion… “[Y/N]! What the hell were you doing out without us?! You could’ve gotten hurt!”
Before you could reply you felt the floor below you vanish; falling through on of Macaque’s shadow portals and back to your house. Still having alcohol in your system, that definitely didn’t work in your favor.
They were both about to scold you when they watched you scramble to the bathroom and hurl into the toilet. Wukong and Macaque looked at each other with their ears flattened, both immediately going to your side on the bathroom floor. Wukong held your hair back for you and Macaque rubbed your back while you emptied the contents of your stomach.
It felt like hours until you’d finally come to a halt, leaning back against the bathtub while Macaque whipped your mouth and readied a toothbrush. “I’m so sorry… I should’ve known you’d get sick when we went through my shadows. Can you ever forgive me, Starlight?” Macaque asked quietly as he carefully brushed your teeth for you.
Wukong soon came back with armfuls of food. Sitting down by your side he sifted through the foods. “Wukong what the hell is all this?! She needs something light! Like toast or crackers!” Macaque scolded as Wukong’s tail flicked with panic. “I-I didn’t know what to get her— you’re the one who knows stuff about nutrition and stuff!” Wukong shoveled everything back I to his arms and scurried to the kitchen once again.
Wukong scrambled back in with some crackers and water for you. Whatever they were angry about earlier they’d completely forgotten about when you’d gotten sick.
“Are you feeling any better, Sunshine?” Wukong asked as his tail curled around your leg. “Not really… the. Crackers are helping, though.” You mumbled hoarsely.
“Well at least it’s helping..” Macaque muttered, carefully scooping you up and laying you in the bed, pulling the covers over you and getting a bucket just in case. “Are you sure you’re okay? Do you need anything? Snacks? Drinks? Kisses?” Wukong asked frantically, sitting at the edge of the bed by your side. “No.. it’s okay. I just wanna sleep off this migraine, please.”
Wukong nodded and shuffled to snuggle into your arms, Macaque snuggling up behind you as you lay sandwiched between them both.
“Good night, [Y/N],”

Where's Wukong in LSO? Is he like retired and far away? Just doesn't want to butt into how MK is mentoring his student? Sorry if I'm being too noisy. Just curious about the au ^^'
(No worries, dear! I love answering questions about the things I write anyhow! 💕 I’ll go into a few characters here!)
Tumblr media
Let’s Start Over
Friends and Family
After many, many long years… Sun Wukong, the Great Sage Equal to Heaven… has retired, actually!
Our lovable Sage is kicking around wherever he pleases (with a strange shadow following him about), leisurely traveling the world and enjoying everything that it has to offer. He stops for fans and scholars alike, signing autographs and answering questions.
The ginger-furred simian especially enjoys visiting different zoos and aquariums to admire the animals- and they seem to like him, too. Old Sun also stops by local pastry shops pretty often, looking for something sweet and made of peaches. He’s got his photo hung on at least two dozen walls by now.
He’s got a pretty good thing going now. Wukong is more than content- he’s happy.
Of course, our powerful King’s not just going to leave an entire life behind.
He’s got a new kiddo to dote on, after all!
Yeah, this man adores you. Every other week or so he’ll come zooming in on his mystic cloud, blazing into view with a shower of vaporous mist trailing behind him.
‘Sun Yeye’, as he’ll frequently call himself, comes bearing gifts and stories. He’s in a better place both mentally and socially, and he’s grown more comfortable with physical contact- somewhat. He’ll ruffle your hair and ply you with something expensive or unhealthy, then bound off to chat with his loyal monkey subjects.
And… there’s someone with him?
Tumblr media
As ever, this little rat is mostly unrepentant and prone to lurking about in the shadows. Still training and eavesdropping and scheming, just a little less cruel about it.
He’s slowly becoming a better person, off journeying with Wukong and learning about everything he’d missed while stuck in the underworld.
But Macaque doesn’t get to have ‘cool uncle/granddad’ title that the Monkey King has been bestowed, I’m afraid. After all, where Wukong was willing to accept his wrongs and shortcomings and actively work on them, Mac just kinda… gets away with his bullshit without ever trying to making amends.
MK keeps him at a full arm’s length from you, considering the sable simian to be not only a bad influence, but a dangerous one.
But, theoretically, if Macaque were to complete a list of intentionally nearly impossible tasks:
1. Apologize to every person he’s hurt
2. Make reparations for all the destruction that he’s caused
3. Acknowledge his own shortcomings and mistakes and try to become better
Then he might consider allowing you and ‘Uncle Macaque’ to meet up. Just for an hour.
Maybe.
Tumblr media
As always, Pigsy maintains his grumpy fervor for cooking and serving, but in a far more lowkey fashion than before. Mei helped to hook him up with topnotch streaming equipment, allowing the chef to start a personal channel where he teaches beginner’s to prep basic meals and take care of their equipment.
He’s found some degree of fame with it, spreading his culinary skills across the internet, which quickly comes to love him.
And speaking of love- Y/N. Oh, how this man cherishes you.
MK gave him a grandbaby.
Ok, so he was a little worried at first. Pigsy thought that his son had gotten someone pregnant (irrational, but he was still worried!) and now was raising the kiddo as a single father.
Once all that has been cleared up, our favorite chef settles into the “granddad” role admirably, tending to you as he did to little MK.
He comes over every Friday to make a family meal for the three of you, and Tang always tags along- usually with a book that he thought you might like.
Tumblr media
Although MK’s relationship with Mei has grown notably… strained, the two still keep in touch. She’s grown to be a massive streamer, and frequently competes in city-wide races as something of a celebrity. A decent chunk of her hard-earned cash goes to local charities or is spent sponsoring young racers that she sees worth in.
Mei is super dedicated to seeing the city grow healthier and happier, opting to visit and buy from only local stores and restaurants. She gives very fair reviews and often causes surges of growth for whatever business she stops in to check out.
She still finds time to game with MK on occasion, trying to bridge the gap that’s grown between the two in recent times. It’s not a phenomenal success, but they have fun and part on decent terms.
For what it’s worth, they’d both still go crazy if the other was injured.
Also, Auntie Mei??? Bringing you fun games and snacks and getting you a custom motorcycle helmet for the rides she takes you on (away from the crowded city streets, of course) and telling you embarrassing stories about MK.
(Also also, Goldendragon?? Moving apart from being friends and then reconciling into being lovers? Or even Chimera? In that final case Y/N is absolutely screwed.)
Tumblr media
Mr. Tang, as always, remains a dedicated scholar and mooch. He’s still spending every day by Pigsy’s side and sampling his food, but now he’s got an audience eagerly watching his every bite. The internet loves this man, both for his honest enthusiasm for food and for his interesting historical lectures.
Tang switching from calmly explaining the history of jajangmyeon to outright squealing about how damn good the dish is the moment he takes the first bite.
Him and Pigsy have moved in together at this point, sharing the streaming equipment for both cooking videos and history lessons. They absolutely share the same channel.
(I cannot think of a name for what that channel would be called. Delicious History? Culinary Chronicles? Past and Produce? Freenoodles?)
I think that Tang would read to you as he did MK, sharing stories both old and new to keep you updated on the dangers you might face.
So much bonding over food. With MK’s permission, he takes you out to different stalls and shops to broaden your horizons. It also helps to build your social skills and the sense of community you feel with the locals.
Also, those Golden Cicada powers? He busts them out whenever you’re in danger, wrapping you in a sphere of glittering light. Actually pretty good at keeping you safe, all things considered.
Tumblr media
The pacifistic view that Sandy has inherited is explored a bit more in this AU, with MK coming to view it as selfish, if not outright stupid.
If an enemy needs to be fought, pacifism is pointless. It’ll only get you and your friends hurt, refusing to fight when your assistance is needed the most.
If an enemy doesn’t need to be fought, every sane person becomes a pacifist temporarily to solve the issue in a non-violent way.
And in a world like Lego Monkie Kid? When fighting is frequent and necessary?
People are absolutely going to look at explicit non-combatants in a certain way.
The real value that Sandy finds in pacifism isn’t strictly for himself- he also doesn’t want to hurt anyone else or go too far in a fight, which are both reasonable. There’s nothing inherently wrong with his refraining from violence.
The main problem is that MK just doesn’t believe that Sandy would be able to protect you if you were in actual danger. Would he run away with you in his arms? Yes. Would he stuff you somewhere safe and force you to hide? Also yes. Would he take someone on, hand-to-hand for your safety?
It’s way harder to be sure. All visits are supervised just in case of a surprise attack
You, on the other hand? You adore this man. Sandy is great for the soul, giving you a chance to drop the training drills and stretches and pick up a paintbrush and put on some music. Also, kitties? Falling asleep on his couch and waking up covered in therapy cats with a cup of tea left within reach.
He’s just so good to you, and a perfect display of what healthy familial behavior actually is.
Tumblr media
Here’s another person MK has soured his view of- Red Son. Given that he falls square into the “instead of actually becoming a better person, I gave up on being evil” category, our hero doesn’t have much fondness for the fiery demon.
Red has settled into life on the outskirts of Megapolis, working as an engineer/mechanic. If you’ve something strange/dangerous to build or fix, he’s your man. A fair price, and he doesn’t even ask questions.
His parents, who often visit, absolutely will. DBK leering down at you as you try to explain that an enemy threw a brick through the window of your tuk-tuk and if your mentor finds out he’s going to go full demon-hunter. PIF raising one eyebrow slowly as you trudge in covered in bruises, a new set of blueprints tucked under your arm.
The evil->helpful but menacing pipeline is real.
If you doesn’t know how to drive, Red’s a good bet for a teacher… if you can handle the yelling. Hit him with an ‘Uncle Red’ and he’ll loosen up a bit.
Also, taking into account his little insulting nicknames he has, like Noodle Boy?
Give that MK treats you like his own child, and may well even outright adopt you under certain circumstances-
You are absolutely getting called ‘Noodle Baby’.
(I’m admittedly not a fan of Spicynoodles, but that dynamic would be somewhat interesting to explore here. MK giving this one villain the ‘redemption’ card, not because Red Son has earned it, but simply because… MK likes him. It would be one hell of an angle for Y/N to attack him with.)
