Not to scare anyone but all self-defence weapons in the Uk are illegal. Indicator spray too is a very risky game to play. Impromptu book club! What have you all been reading lately? Anything wonderful? Anything terrible? If you've been swapping presents this week, were any of them books? I got a lovely edition of Pride and Prejudice and the complete Sherlock Holmes short stories, as well as a copy of The Standard Life of a Temporary Pantyhose Salesman by Aldo Busi - a book I know nothing about but whose title and author name have already delighted me.

Currently Reading:

The Philosophy of Love by Rebecca Ryan, a surprisingly heavy rom com that manges pretty well as it balances a profoundly silly premise with some really strong character stuff as the female lead realises her ex was abusively controlling. I'm also relistening to Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell by Susanna Clarke, performed by Simon Prebble, for the millionth time. It's still good, who knew!

Recently Finished:

The Sunless Sea by Erin Morgenstern - Badly needed editing, from a story level (there was no plot! Kind of a big deal for a book about storytelling!) right down to a basic sentence level (the line, "A dim light shone above, not bright" stands out as an example. You already said it was a dim light, Erin. I know it isn't bright. I'm beginning to worry you aren't, either.)

Gods of Jade and Show by Silvia Moreno-Garcia - I had so much more fun with this than I expected! The writing wasn't particularly strong, but it was a lot of fun and I liked the blending of 1920s Mexican culture with Mayan mythology. Could have done with a bit more pizazz for the 1920s stuff but overall, I had a blast.

Flatland by Edwin Abbot (audiobook performed by Kevin Eldon) - For a book about geometry, again, I had way more fun with this than I might have thought. I enjoyed the satire of Victorian society, but audiobook maybe isn't the best medium for a book that apparently includes quite a lot of diagrams.

Meet Me in the Margins by Melissa Ferguson (audiobook performed by Talon David) - Absolutely god-awful. No idea why I finished this. It fell into that pitfall that so many hetero romances do, of trying to have a protagonist who is simultaneously "sooo relatable" but is still a wish fulfillment. Cut to the protagonist calling herself "a whale" because she's... a US size 6 (UK 10) 🙄

Tread of Angels by Rebecca Roanhorse (audiobook performed by Dion Graham) - A tidy wee novella that makes me want to read more by this author. Dion Graham's voice is simply too delicious for words. I liked the world created here - essentially a demonic sort of wild west - and that it didn't outstay its welcome.

Binned Off:

The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson (audiobook performed by Kate Reading and Michael Kramer) - I know he has a million fans, but I couldn't be doing with that much guff about the magic system in the face of so little characterisation. Also, maybe he unpacks the whole "this group of people are naturally suited to slavery" thing later in the book/series, but I wasn't in the mood to give him time to try.

I’ve got it all drafted. Now, I just gotta add some ✨pizazz✨

✨Composition Analysis: Into The Ashes✨

I’m back with another Composition Analysis from my Peter Hart soundtrack, courtesy of @gioiaalbanoart ✨

Without further ado, the Titular Piece. As always, use headphones or earbuds for the best listening experience:

Into the Ashes

“Into the Ashes” was named after The Golden Phoenix. Before Peter became the captain, his father Johnathan Hart was commanding The Phoenix. Proceeding a long battle with an enemy ship, The Phoenix was nearly sunk. However, as it is named The Phoenix, it dove into the ashes and rose back from them to sail the sea again.

After Captain Hart I’s death, Captain Hart II (Peter) rebranded the vessel as The Golden Phoenix to honor his father’s legacy, while also giving rise to a new era.

This movement is in 3 distinct parts, with an overarching melody passed between accordion, flute, and strings. The meter is 6/8, to give a “rocking” feeling like the ocean. Swells in the strings represent the waves rolling over in the sea, and the deep baritone/bass parts are added because yes. ✨

At the end of each section is a little “Pirate motif” that I used in the previous analysis post, as well as a few other movements in the Peter Hart soundtrack.

The song opens with the “drums of war” (one of my favorite opens). The tambourine is heard playing both on the beat and in syncopated rhythms for extra pizazz. An accordion takes the melody on the first part, while harmonies fall to the harp and the delicious choir of men.

Then, the melody is passed to the flute for Part II. Some minor embellishments are added to the flute to mimic the rising and falling of the waves. Lots of grace notes added to put a distinct spin to the melody shown in Part I.

Then, Part III. This part was FUUUUUN 🎵

We introduce Part III with a stagger rhythm, as the waves get a little chopper, and the seafaring adventures take a more treacherous turn. The flute and accordion are paired on the melody line with strings, and even more embellishments, as they anxiously try to catch up to the impending storm of accelerandos.

The ending of the piece slows down to signify that the boat has broken out of the storm, into the calmer seas, and is ready to sail another day ⛵️✨

Once again with Varisa and the night shift gang

Ok so imagine Varisa and (topaz, rider, Mandus, Quinn, Luka) got into a VERY heated argument which leads to them distancing (if that’s even possible for these possessive yanderes) so in a very rare moment Varisa feels very guilty and decides to apologize but here is when things get a little iffy since in her families tradition a true apology is where you will risk your life for your beloved to to get them something special and for Varisa that is either gathering ingredients for a very hearty meal or a precious gem that would grant you some boost. She would set a note on their doors then leave.

Quinn:

With the knowledge of what Varisa knows about them, she would go deep underground to find a precious stone for Quinn that would grant her invisibility but can only be used about 10 times before shattering, the journey would nearly kill Varisa but it would be worth it for her beloved.

Topaz:

Varisa would find topaz a precious stone carved in a beast cemetery that would grant teleportation to any location no matter the place like no other but can only be used 8 times before it turns into dust, Varisa will have to perform an act of strength to get that stone but it’ll be worth it in her eyes.

Luka:

For Luka, Varisa would look for ingredients to cook the best meal for her beloved, she would go all around the country just to get these ingredients, she would cook an assortment of meats and spices just for Luka.

Rider:

Varisa would go deep into the forest to kill a few animals and.. others, gather a few plants, obtain a few species to add some ✨pizazz✨then cook the sauces in a large iron/obsidian pot along with cooking the meats over a fire, along with adding a LITTLE bit of her own blood so he can be reminded of her when he eats it. The whole process would take a few days at best but thank goodness she doesn’t necessarily need sleep.

Mandus:

Varisa would get him a precious gem that would grant anyone who wields it to experience as if they were experiencing all the worlds greatest pleasures (except for taste since Mandus can’t taste shit 🧡) the trial would be to sacrifice a piece of her own body but it will all be worth it for her sweetheart <3.

(I went a liiiittle since I was so immersed but whatever)

anyways how would the night shift gang react to Varisa going to such lengths after an argument to get them an apology gift because of varisa’s family tradition?

Quinn

-They’re going to be so relieved seeing Varisa back. They’ll be all over her asking her if she’s ok and checking on her.

-Once handed the gift Quinn will hold it tightly and say they love it.

-But um they actually don’t have any care for magical gems. The gift fits their archeologist dad way more than Quinn. They refuse to say that at all though, cause she risked her life for it! And they’d feel like a major asshole if they spoke the truth about how they don’t actually like it.

-For Quinn their love for gems and shiny things is more so for the looks to add whimsy to their home. Or for dressing it on their darling. But with gems with actual functions they don’t care for them, cause it feels like they’re wasting it.

-And it makes Quinn uncomfortable the idea of such a thing wasting away on their shelf. Especially when it’s something they can give you their dad and he can give it to a museum to educate others. But they can’t just regift it that be a dick thing to do to her.

Topaz

-She’s following her to the cemetery, you can’t be away from her for long. Especially when you’re doing something like stealing from a beastkin cemetery.

-Topaz is upset about the argument yes, but she doesn’t want you two to have an air of tension. But since Varisa is determined to do this she’ll let her.

-Plus it’s easier on Topaz’s mind if she’s there to watch over her. That way the fox can leave a sacrifice at the cemetery in exchange for Varisa taking the gem.

-To appease any spirits or Luvan, since she’s stealing their shit. Afterwards she’ll keep her close and kiss Varisa’s cheek. Keeping the gem on her 24/7.

Luka

-It’s hard having an argument with him cause only a small amount of things can actually make him fight with you. So any argument with Varisa would just be Luka apologizing for upsetting her.

-He’s not going to fight her on it at all. And then he starts giving those big sad puppy dog eyes for upsetting her. It honestly would probably make anyone feel like a huge dick. Plus he’s very forgiving so she just needs to say sorry and she’s forgiven just like that.

-But on another note if she truly wants to do right by him, don’t leave his side. If she really wants those ingredients she’ll have to order them.

-Luka does not do good at all alone from his darling for long periods of time. He will and has hurt himself being away from his love for as little as three days. If she’s gone for longer going across the country to get said ingredients when she returns, there’s no guarantee Luka will be the same as he was when she gets back. Or if he’ll even be there anymore…

Rider

-In a bad argument Rider does ask for some time to himself to cool down. And will return to hash things out in a more calmer way after a couple of minutes.

-If she wants to cook him this heartfelt meal he won’t stop her. Just tell her there’s no rush since he’s accepted her apology.

-The minute he eats it and taste her blood though, Rider will pause and take her hands. Looking right into her eyes. He’ll tell her how much he appreciates this meal, how heartfelt it all is, and how sincere everything she put in it is. But he does not want to eat any blood or flesh of hers.

-For him that’s abhorrent and makes his stomach twist in discomfort. He adores his love his darling. He doesn’t want to associate her in any shape or form as food. Much less for her to hurt herself for him.

Mandus

-Angry. He is just angry. He’s angry she hurt herself. He’s angry that her family’s tradition is like that. And he’s angry at himself that he couldn’t stop her.

-Mandus watched his mom wither away due to sickness so seeing someone he loves hurt in a big way like that breaks him.

-He falls to his knees and hold onto her waist and he weeps. He weeps fat angry tears. As words die his throat and he clings to her. He clings onto her like she’ll disappear.

-He’s especially angry cause it’s such useless gift she hurt herself for, because why would he need a gem, when just being with her is the greatest pleasure of all. For him nothing else can compare.
