New Ryoko Kui Interview from Anime Expo 2024 (Summary/Commentary)

This interview is unintentionally hilarious. It's much shorter than the other interview, and every question was met with either a polite non-answer or a flat-out "No." Kui embodied this elf lady she drew for the entire thing:

Kui really wasn't having any of it. Every time the interviewer tried to ask a leading question about things the fandom thinks are extremely central to the manga, Kui basically answered no/I don't care/You're overthinking it/I wasn't suggesting what you're assuming I was suggesting.

My summary/commentary of the interview under the cut.

Please keep in mind these are my opinions, based on my knowledge of Japanese social conventions, and how I personally read the interview!

Q: Dungeon Meshi is about the power of eating in groups/family, do you have any food memories or recipes you can share with us that are important to you? A: No. (In other interviews Kui has stated that she doesn't like eating, other people seeing her eat, or watching others eat, and that she used to eat her meals in the toilet to avoid being around other people during meals. This is a common thing people who are shy, bullied, or socially avoidant do in Japan.)

Q: What meal in DM do you want to eat? A: None of them, I'm a picky eater.

Q: You obviously love TTRPGs. A: Uh...Not really... I've never played one, I just read about them for research purposes. (In other interviews Kui has stated she's never played a TTRPG because she doesn't have friends she can do it with. The fact that so many people in the world do have that many friends they are that close to was very shocking to her. She was amazed that people would actually role-play in front of other people. This, plus other things Kui has said in the past ("I'm not good at human relationships"), suggests that she's not very socially active.)

Q: Your fantasy ecosystem is so complex, how did you build it? A: I though about it, and then I used my imagination. (This is kind of an ice-cold burn. Like a writer saying "I wrote one word, and then another, and then I kept adding words until the book was done.")

Q: Do you love monsters as much as Laios? A: No. But I do like them a lot, and I've loved them since I was a kid.

Q: How'd you design Laios' ultimate monster? A: I used the childhood memory of wanting to design the coolest, strongest monster.

Q: A lot of fans think Laios is autistic, especially because of his fight with Toshiro. A: I wrote him to be a normal guy that anyone can relate to. I don't think he's special or unusual. Both he and Toshiro have problems and they both need to work on communicating better. (Kui saying she didn't write Laios as autistic doesn't mean you should shit on other fans who read him as autistic. All it means is that he's not canonically autistic, and you can't say "Laios being autistic is the foundation of the entire manga." Kui saying that she didn't intentionally write Laios as autistic doesn't invalidate the interpretation, it just means saying Laios is autistic is an interpretation, and not a concrete fact. Also worth noting that labeling Laios as autistic might come across as very rude for a Japanese person. Kui may not want to call Laios autistic due to social stigma.)

Q: Tell us about the Senshi fanservice. A: Calling it "fanservice" feels wrong to me. He's just an older man who doesn't care if people see his underwear, something I've experienced in real life. It might make some people uncomfortable but Senshi's just living his life, I thought that was funny. Laios is a bit uncomfortable seeing people in their underwear. (Holy shit. This answer is the equivalent of Kui firing a shotgun directly in the interviewer's face and screaming "it's not fucking fanservice." She's being VERY direct for a Japanese person, and implying that she doesn't like people calling the Senshi pantyshots fanservice, that she sees them as comedy.)

Q: But Senshi's handsome isn't he? A: All dwarves are handsome :) (This is a complete non-answer, and after that previous answer, it's very likely Kui is trying to brush the interviewer off. This is most likely Kui saying "Please stop this line of questioning/I don't want to talk about this anymore.")

Q: What inspired Marcille's dungeon lord dress? Her friends all make fun of her but I thought it looked nice. A: There's no specific reference. I made it up to look like her mom's dress and added a childish head covering. The dress is totally normal, her friends making fun of Marcille is a joke. They're just not used to seeing Marcille in that kind of clothing, so it seems weird to them. They don't actually think the dress is that strange or uncool.

Q: Did you expect the strong fan reaction to Marcille and Falin's relationship? A: I don't think about how the fans will react when I'm writing. (Another complete non-answer. She doesn't want to discuss the topic of Farcille and avoids it like a landmine. Honestly, good for her. She wants fans to feel free to think what they want and have their own interpretations.)

Q: Will you write a spin-off about Izutsumi getting revenge on the person who made her? A: Maybe, maybe not. Probably not. I think Izutsumi's pretty happy as she is and just wants to live her life.

In short, Kui's reaction to a lot of the fandom opinion questions was:

EDIT: Also, looking at the headline/page summary for the article, it's uh...insanely misleading.

"We sat down with Kui-sensei at Anime Expo 2024 to discuss the community of food, why Senshi is so sexy, seeing neurodivergence in Laios, and more." Kui literally said no in response to all of those questions, this summary of their own interview implies that there was anything discussed, and not just Kui telling them "no" to each question.

The man, the myth, the legend, Ken Sato. He was seemingly arrogant in his interviews, as well as relatively cold and distant from his teammates, as if he was untouchable.

You always assumed he had some sort of superior complex.

So... how did you stumble upon him at some measly convenience store, sitting there in a plastic chair like some loner?

It was as if he had no friends.

You tossed a cold fresh can of beer towards him, to which he caught it easily, blinking at you in surprise for a moment. His usual neat slicked back hair fell across his forehead as messy black bangs and the glow of his eyes were dull, despite the beautiful specks that adorned them. Truly, his irises were breathtaking, like stars, now that you could see them so close in real life.

"What are you doing?" he asked, with an almost offensive tone in his voice.

You shrugged. "You looked like you needed one." Without asking for permission, you slipped into the chair across from him and cracked open your own beer, listening in to the delicious foam created at the top.

"If you're a fan, you could just ask me for an autograph instead of being rude and bothering me like nobodies' business."

"Not a fan. Just thought you could use the company."

He scoffed. "I'm the one and only Ken Sato! I don't need company from some rando on the street."

"If you say so... you do look more sad sipping on beer alone though," you relented, getting up from your seat.

He hesitated, running his fingers through his hair in slight frustration. "Fine... sit down."

You plopped back down with a grin. "I must say, you look quite different in real life compared to the big screen. A little worse for wear."

Instead of rebuking like you imagined, he sighed and drooped his head. He took a large gulp out of the can, slamming it down the small table. "Just dealing with some personal things right now."

"Ah, that explains the recent plays you've done."

He shot you a glare and shook his head. "I... just need to get warmed up. I'll be back in no time."

"Right..." you said, sniffing.

"What's your name anyway?" he asked, raising a brow at you. In his typical black tee and jeans, he draped himself against the chair, the muscles rippling shamelessly. Indeed, the years spent training on baseball paid off, shaping his physique majestically. Perhaps that was why he had so many fangirls, not for his plays but for his attractive looks.

"[Name]."

"And who are you to be sending insults my way every so often?"

"I'm not." You lifted your arms up defensively. "I'm just stating facts. But funny enough, I get you. It's not like my life's going perfect either."

"Are you another reporter? Trying to dig up my deepest darkest secrets?"

"I'm not. But what is your deepest darkest secret?"

"..."

"Sorry. But yeah, no reporter here. Just your average day in the mill office worker."

"Is that supposed to comfort me?" he groaned, rubbing his face in exhaustion. "That an average office worker relates to me?"

"Y'know, with that attitude, no wonder you don't have friends."

He grew silent, sipping more of his beer as if it was the most interesting thing in the world. His silence was your answer. But it also made you wonder. There had been a lot of rumors and gossip circulating around the Ken Sato. Was any of it real? And did some of it hit too close to home? Why was this man such an anomaly? Why had he not won any championships yet despite how impressive he was? Nothing added up.

"Struck a nerve?"

"I have friends," he said, averting his gaze. "They're just busy all the time."

"I see..." you responded, fighting off the smile from your lips. It was clear as day that he was lying, but you supposed you had been hard on him enough. "I'll be your friend."

"You?!" He eyed you up and down in dismay, before a lightbulb struck him. "Actually... yes! Are you good with babysitting?"

You choked midsip, confusion warping your features. "Babysitting?"

The Rookie Prodigy - Carlos Sainz x Driver! Reader Part 5

Plot: You are a rookie coming into the 2022 season of Formula One into Alfa Romeo with team member Zhou Guanyu, being in a mid tier team can you help them rise up the ranks. What pressures occur for the only rookies within the 2022 line up!

As said in your interviews you did spend the time in the break working on your fitness. You and Zhou stayed in Switzerland the whole time, you both were in the gym pretty much everyday.

You guys watched as your team made core improvements to the car, using lots from the Ferrari currently on the grid. You knew the car would be quicker for Italy and you were excited to race there as it was a track your car would do well in.

You didn't think much about what happened with Carlos either, because why would you. It was a heat of the moment thing where there was an obvious attraction to Carlos, he had the hair, the puppy dog eyes, those soft muscles and the accent. The accent was the thing that really got you.

You'd worked too hard to get to where you are now and you weren't going to risk neither your job, nor your reputation for a guy. Regardless of how insanely attractive you found him.

The break between your last race in Australia until IMOLA felt very short despite it being a two weekend gap. Your mind was extremely clear and you were ready for this weekend.

You and Zhou flew to Italy from Switzerland and went right to the track. You both messed around for the whole of media day to the point where people couldn't actually find you both.

You were causing chaos round the paddock, running up and down the strip seeing who could do it the quickest or seeing who could sneak into a different teams hospitality and take a snack.

When media did find you, both you and Zhou couldn't stop laughing at everything the both of you were saying. Sometime's you'd say a joke to him in Chinese which obviously had the two of you screaming of laughter while the team and presenters awkwardly tried to work out what was so funny.

You eventually answered the racing related questions which everyone especially your PR managers were happy for even though you couldn't tell them about any of the improvements on the car. Just that you felt like this would be an more interesting race putting you into the higher mid field than you were right now.

Race day came so soon, and after being told to attempt to sand bag a little in FP1 coming 11 overall. You ended up qualifying 8th overall, which wasn't what you or you team were looking for but after running into some last minute car issues you just weren't there.

Saturday was awful, because of those car issues you didn't actually manage to get out for FP2 and went straight into the Sprint race. Luckily you were in points position coming in P7.

When it came to the race your car was fully ready and so were you. Zhou however had the opposite of you, where he had to have work done on his car when in Parc-Ferme conditions so he had to start from the pit lane.

You'd managed some immense overtakes throughout the race and you managed to come P4. It was your highest position yet and your race engineer couldn't be happier with you.

"Amazing race Y/N, guessing you had changes to the car after Australia and well, we really got to see your driving abilities up there today. You know considering that was a mid-field car, you really really showed us what you are made off!" the interviewer offers.

"Yeah it was a fantastic drive, just shy of a podium. Lando, was driving extremely well and defended from me until the end and I cant congratulate him more for that podium. Is it okay if i call this short, I want to be there to support my friend!" you smile, looking at the time next to the clock by the interviewing knowing the podium would be soon.

"Yes, yes of course!" she shoos you away, making comments on how you have some of the purest and kindest relationships on the grid.

You ran up to where all the Mclaren and Red Bull workers stood. You waited off to the back waiting for Max, Sergio and Lando to come out.

"Hey, we haven't spoken for a while" a voice says behind you making you jump a little.

"Lewis?" you ask in shock, looking around to see if anyone else was here from Mercedes but he seemed to be alone.

"Yes, Y/N?" he asks looking directly at you.

"What are, what are you doing here?" you ask.

"Just watching the celebrations. Well done on the race today, you did amazing!" he compliments making a light blush come across your cheeks.

"Thank you, I er, would say the same for you but today was a kind of shit show for you!" you smile softly.

"Yeah, the car had no pace at all. I'll come back next week in Miami!" he smiles rubbing your shoulder. After a minute of silence he starts the conversation up again.

"I haven't really spoken to you for a while, what's been going on?" he asks titling his head to the side.

"I've just been focused on getting better, I-" you say about to mention Carlos but decide against it.

"You what?" he pushes looking over at you.

"Ceremony is starting, shhhhh!" you smile putting a finger up to your lip and cheer loudly as Lando comes out onto stage. Your jumping up and down, making him laugh and shake his head. All the McLaren workers turn to look at whoever was celebrating more than them, laughing when they see you.

"Of course it's her!" one of them jokes, before turning back as Sergio walks out shortly followed making the whole of the Red Bull Team go wild.

You stand there respectfully as the Deutsch National Anthem starts to play. Once it ends and everyone starts to leave where they are you turn to Lewis.

"Did you want to go out in Miami, I know this amazing Vegan restaurant and I think your personal trainer will be happy with what they serve there" he offers and you think about it for a few seconds.

I mean, Carlos literally cornered you and kissed you, but Lewis he was just asking you to dinner as friends before the next race.

"Yeah sure, I'd like that. I don't have any friends in Florida. So having one will be nice!" you smile, before your PR manager comes up to you explaining that you need to go to the race debriefing.

You and Lewis had of course been photographed in the paddock together and loads of media accounts had gotten a hold of it.

Carlos had seen these posts, some of them particularly the tweets suggesting that you were both flirting and other posts suggesting that you watched the podium together.

He was shocked at first, he was angry that you would reject him the way you did and then say yes to Lewis.

But after he had some time to cool down and realize what had actually occurred, he came to the conclusion that these posts were the exact reason you couldn't be in a relationship with him. Everyone was always up in your business and it meant that whatever you were doing outside of driving they would use to critique your skills.

You probably had just bumped into Lewis at the podium ceremony and that picture was taken at the perfect time for the media to stir ridiculous stories about Lewis asking you out on a date in Miami to a Vegan restaurant.

He understood why you said what you said, now seeing how easily picked apart your life was. But he wanted to change that, he wanted to be able to be with you without all this animosity.

But how the Miami weekend would change things Carlos or yourself wasn't prepared for.

Old Web European Musical Sites

So this post started because I was looking through the waybackmachine on the Internet Archive for the old Disney Fairies site for a friend, and remembered I'd backed up some old musical related sites a couple years ago on the waybackmachine just to archive them.

Which made me remember how recently I saw someone on here, I don't remember who, asking if there were interviews either about Elisabeth das Musical or specifically with Uwe Kroger (the actor who originated the role of Der Tod/Death) in English to which someone had answered no but there are some quotes and fragments in other posts on here. Which made me remember an old website I'd found that did have interviews on and I went out to find it. After I found it, I tried to find another website I'd found that had nice old photos of Uwe on that I'd save for I'd never seen them anywhere else, but sadly can no longer find the site and I hadn't bookmarked it or archived it. But, in doing so I did find some others.

So, come along with me as I find some ye olde websites based around European Musicals and Non-English Musicals, all of which I am archiving using the waybackmachine and can be found on my archive.org account @ wennli3b3 under the 'web archives' tab on my profile.

What is old web? The aesthetics wiki describes it as "Essentially consisting of screencaps and gifs, Old Web is an aesthetic utilizing traditional web design elements combined with aspects of poetry and self-expression. This also includes GIFs, video games, and clip-art. This aesthetic expresses nostalgia for Internet culture of the early 1990s to early 2010s." Think of old GeoCities and AngelFire websites, the pre-2010s internet where it wasn't uncommon for anyone to make their own little website for anything and the internet wasn't just social media. There's just such a charm for me about these old sites and the work people put into customising and decorating their sites, often just as a fun project for themselves or a way to document things they loved. Therefore the websites we'll be looking at are from the 90s up to the late 2000s, 2010s and onwards websites don't count for this list.

What is the waybackmachine? The waybackmachine is hosted on the Internet Archive, it's a digital archive of websites that lets you visit websites as they were during the past if they've been archived there.

[Note: this post won't have clickable links because that can make Tumblr unhappy and either hide or soft-block my post, so sadly no clickable links, but I will write out the links with spaces in the hopes that won't hide the post and you will just have to type them in for yourselves, and I will link my web archive page in the replies to this post. I am also not claiming to be the first to back these sites up or discover them, some of them have already been archived in past, but doing them all under one account means you guys can have an easy list of them all in one place. Some of these sites no longer exist and are only accessible via the waybackmachine, in those cases I will save those sites to my web archive so they are all listed on one page.]

Staring with a website some of you will be familiar with and while in it's current 2023 form doesn't count as old web and is easily accessible, we're going back in time with the waybackmachine to see how the site looked and what information it had about old current productions in 2000-2008. And frankly I don't know what to do with the information that at some point in 2000 there was a 'vampire museum' inside the Raimund Theatre that had what appears to be a wax figure of Steve Barton in his original Graf von Krolock costume. I. What??

2. eljen . net / kroeger

A fansite dedicated to Uwe Kroger, the actor, that was run seemingly from 1998-2002 that old photos, links to music that no longer work, but most important to me is the 'Press' page that has many articles and interviews with Uwe that have been translated into English! The site is also available in German eljen . net / kroeger / deutsch. A special shoutout to Uwe's own drawing of himself as Der Tod.

3. eljen . net / elisabeth

Run by the same person as the first site, in fact it is technically the same site however if you go to the root eljen . net there is just a blank page with a link to the /kroeger site, there's no direct link to the Elisabeth site, you can only find it through googling or having the direct URL.

4. iukc . de

The Uwe Kroger fanclub webite seems to have started around 2000 but it was taken offline sometime after October 2021 as going to the URL now leads to a 404 error page, but the site is still accessible using the waybackmachine. On a 2019 capture of the website it states this fanclub was dissolved on December 31st 2019 and was advertising the uwe-kroeger-community . com website as a new fanclub. Some of the pages are available in English and Japanese, but all of the pages are only available in German. The site includes information about the fanclub, as well as lists of Uwe's work, discography, and more.

5. gudrun-kauck . de

A site that as far as I can tell is run by someone just documenting their life and things they see, and that happens to include many musicals. Down the left side of the site there are pages for The Phantom of the Opera, Tanz der Vampire, Ludwig, Concerts, Musicals and Actors. Here there is so much information, interviews, photos, screenshots, transcriptions of scripts and lyrics, articles, and more. This site is a real treasure trove. It's been updating since at least 2004 and it's most recent update was in 2023. This site is in German.

6. jimsteinman . com

The Tanz der Vampire page on Jim Stienman's website has links to lots of articles, interviews and photos for the original 1997 Vienna production and the 2000 Stuttgart production. This site is in English.

7. carpe-jugulujm . com

Another site that is no longer active and can only be accessed via the waybackmachine, it was online by 2006 and taken offline between late 2021 and 2023. It has information on productions of Tanz der Vampire between 1997 and 2009 and is one of the few if not the only place I've found information about the 2000 Estonia production. This site is in English.

8. geocities . ws / mymusicalworlds

This website is all in Chinese, however parts of it are in English and German. It lists information on different musicals, actors, and has lyrics for songs, and photos. It also has midi files but, as with almost all of these old sites, the download links no longer work.

9. theatre-musical . com

This website started around 2002 and was closed some time in 2016, if you go to the website now all you'll get is a message saying the website has been closed, however the old pages are still accessible via the waybackmachine. There's pages for many musicals with lots of information about each show and each of these musical pages has a link to a page that lists other sites, official and fanmade, that are about this musical. There's many more sites to find via

10. elisabeth-fanclub . de

A fansite dedicated to Elisabeth das Musical, more specifically the 2001 Essen production and 2003 Vienna Revival. This site includes information and photos about these productions. It was online by 2004 and was taken offline some time after 2007 and is only now available via the waybackmachine. This site is in German.

11. sisi-net . de

While this site is more dedicated to the actual real Empress Elisabeth, it also has a page dedicated to Elisabeth das Musical which includes several articles and interviews for the 2001 Essen production. There is also some information on here about the Ludwig musical. This site is in German. It was online by 1999, in 2008 the site was empty and "'"under construction" and after 2008 seemed to have either had it's domain sold or hacked and became used for something else, and by 2019 was offline.

12. geocities . com / broadway / 8851

Another site that is dedicated to the real person Elisabeth, but also has information about multiple productions of Elisabeth das Musical. The site was started in 1996 and is no longer online as GeoCities no longer exists as a website hoster, but can be accessed using the waybackmachine. This site is in English.

A German fansite for the 2001 Essen production of Elisabeth das Musical that contains information about the show, merchandise, photos, etc. The site was online by 2002, went under construction in 2005 and after 2006 went offline and only accessible via the waybackmachine. This site is in German.

The old official site for the 2001 Essen production of Elisabeth das Musical. It's only accessible via the waybackamachine however all I could access is this homepage as the site seems to require flash player which no longer exists. The site was made in 2001, by 2006 it was redirecting to a different website that no longer exists, and by 2008 it was just offline.

The official site for the 1999 Dutch production of Elisabeth das Musical. The site went up in 1999 and is no longer online and only accessible via the waybackmachine.

A site where someone cataloged every musical they saw between 1996 and 2004. Some of these listings link to their reviews of the musicals and pictures they took (the pictures of Elisabeth das Musical really interest me because they went on a night where Jesper Tyden was understudying for Der Tod (he usually played Rudolf) in teh 2001 Essen production).

The official site for the 2002 Broadway production of Tanz der Vampire. Whilst we all have... feelings about this production, the site's design is very of its time. It has information on the (re-written) plot, cast, downloads for the original English demo recordings (that no longer work), and more. In 2002 the cast page lists the Broadway cast, after the shows closure in 2003 these pages advertised the 2003 Hamburg cast, and by 2006 it now advertises the 2006 Berlin cast, and then even by 2012 that page was no longer being updated. This site is now only accessible via the waybackmachine, I don't know when exactly it went offline but I remember being able to acccess it back in 2020. This site is in English.

The official site for German-lanuage productions of Tanz der Vampire from 2000 to around 2004, mostly the 2003 Hamburg production. Some pages of the site sometimes redirect to musicalwelt . de, like the 'galarie' page that links to a page of many paintings by Mike Schöbs of the original 1997 Vienna production. The site is only accessible via the waybackmachine, sometimes I have difficultly loading the pages, and sometimes the pages on later dates redirect to stagegholding . de which no longer exists or works.

19. tanz-der-vampire . de

A fansite for the 2003 Hamburg production of Tanz der Vampire that is still online. It has info about the musical and this production. The page I found the most interesting is the info > links page. It has a list that includes screenshots of websites from around 2003 with official and fanmade sites for different actors from the musical (such as Marjan Shaki, Maike Switzer, Aris Sas, Thomas Mülner, Jens Janke, Ian Jon Bourg, Kevin Tarte and more) most if not all of these sites are on the waybackmachine (and I'm saving them to my own web archive page rather than listing them all here, Tumblr has a text limit and an image limit and we're already running close to it).

about the poster itself: do you guys know how hard it is to make art for a band that hasn’t been active in 13 years? the answer is HARD (yes, i probably could done research and looked for old interviews for inspiration but who has time for that)

—> the icons related to “take a vacation!” are inspired by lyrics from the song “take a vacation!” (haha, did you see what I did there?) specifically, the lines “we’ll leave the waves at the ocean” and “we’ll leave the sand in a suitcase”

—> the Jon Walker and Ryan Ross icons are taken directly from the album cover (it took ten years off my life trying to figure out how to get them on here w/ the color palette—graphic design may be my passion but I never said i was GOOD at it)

—> the heart imagery comes from the fact that the band’s called “the young VEINS”—although it annoys me IMMENSELY that i technically drew more arteries than veins in the icons (my anatomy teacher would be so disappointed, but alas, anatomical accuracy had to be sacrificed to make it. yknow. look nice)

—> i did hand-lettering for all the text except for everything that’s in Helvetica (i did THAT in canva). the art program i use has a basically unusable text tool so I was forced to draw all of it, so I choose to believe that the reason why it doesn’t look. the best. is because of the caffeine shakes

some extra commentary: am I the only one who’s genuinely REALLY bad at listening to music? i don’t really get into bands as much as i just find songs that sound nice—to illustrate the extent of this issue: i did NOT know that Brendon Urie was a part of Panic! At the Disco. I’m not even kidding, I thought the artist who made Death of a Bachelor and the artist who made A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out were completely different and just. didn’t bother to check if I was right.

also, I’m not the type of person to be interested in band lore???? I rarely know the names of band members if even I’ve listened to the band for years (I really couldn’t care less in most situations)

anyway, my friend/manager is really into band lore, so I basically got a crash-course in all things “early to late 2000s emo band” and subsequently found out about the Young Veins (i was also extremely disappointed when I found out they only had one album and hadn’t been active in over a decade) THEN I realized that decade old, inactive bands don’t usually have merch, so I made my own! “merch” used lightly—i don’t think this is actually fit to sell lol

This is not my typical art or meme post but a doubt surfaced in the Mcspirk Discord server about TarsusIV and if Kirk was on the list to die or to survive. So I made a kind of shallow dive in the net to see if I was able to find an answer, and I could say I did, but boy did I also find something I was absolutely NOT expecting.

For the record canon or alpha canon in Star Trek is what we see in the shows themselves.

(Some people may include here scriptwriters or directors publications/comments and interviews relating their work on the show and their intentions while making it, in general any of the key people that contributed to the canon we see in the shows. For others this is considered beta canon so it's a kind of grey area.)

Beta canon is all the rest under the Star Trek brand; novels, videogames, manuals, comics, etc.

Having established that more or less, here we go:

In alpha canon the answer to if Kirk was in the list to die or survive is; "it's tricky" xD

Memory Alpha in all accounts points to him being one of the other 4000 people that survived the mass execution, although it is not exactly specified that he was on any list to survive. There were previous scripts where Jim says he was, but it was scrapped among other things. Still, if Kodos executed the 4000 colonists all together in the antimatter chamber, and we haven't heard of any escapees or switches between people, I think it's safe to say he was on the list of survivors. However, I think it's important to note that we don't know if later Kodos just chilled, ordered more people killed or there were more deaths due to his ruling the more the situation became dire. And we also don't know how long he lasted in charge, since I couldn't find an exact time when help arrived either; it just states it arrived earlier than expected but too late to save the 4000 killed. So we can't be certain how much time elapsed from the mass execution till help finally got there.

Kirk is listed as a survivor of the TarsusIV Massacre, that encompasses all the struggle since what would be the uprise of Kodos and ordering those executions, till the unknown time later when help finally arrived. But we seem to be left to wonder if he could have been sought for later executions or persued in any way. In fact when we think back at what happened to his friend Tom Leighton, who was also a survivor and one of the nine witnesses, it is understood the damage to the side of his face either was caused by Kodos himself or took place during the massacre at least, maybe caused by Kodos enforcers.

Since we don't know exactly what happened and for how long after the mass execution, we can't be sure what or who was the cause. Like most of it, it's left to interpretation. But when you get into account that him, along with Jim and Kevin Riley, who were all rather young then, are from the few people who could identify Kodos because they saw his face, added to his wounds, makes you think that at least there was some big turmoil and, be it on purpose or not, these kids ended either in Kodos presence himself when most didn't even know his face, or could retrieve that photo we see in the TOS episode from Kodos' headquarters or some other important place that may store such data. As one ST Discovery novel (beta canon) suggests and also tells us more of what transpired after the execution.

So yes, alpha canon, or "the" canon left it ambiguous on purpose, since any intent to specify was scrapped before the TOS episode Conscience of the King was produced.

But here is where it gets juicy; beta canon (specifically Memory Beta) tells a very different story, one that made me have to read the paragraph twice and fact check because wtf xD

Two novels you'll see listed in the screenshot detail that Kirk was, in fact, on the list to die, but he escaped, saving Kevin Riley while he was at it. And not only that, but that Kirk was saved by SAREK who MELDED with him to erase the memory, because he also saved KODOS and gave him his new identity (wtf Sarek? You did that because you thought it was the logical thing to do or how come?? This could have tremendous implications...)

I don't know if any of you guys knew this but I sure didn't and the fic potential for this is unimaginable xD Maybe many of those that made Tarsus fics including Spock and/or Sarek there are based on this piece of beta canon but yeah, shocking.

I'm aware that Shatner touches on more about what happened in TarsusIV in some of the ST novels he wrote, like "Star Trek: Academy #1 Collision Course" and the "Autobiography of James T Kirk". For the latter I believe I read an excerpt some time ago that talked about riots and the situation getting really violent, but I couldn't find any information in this small search and I don't have the spoons to read the book right now, so take it with a grain of salt.

In the end it is all up for interpretation and you can go either way, but you sure get some interesting details in the various levels of canon xD

He was in his car on the way back home from brunch with Pedri and Fermín.

I hung up with him and the first post that popped up when I refreshed my instagram was Pablo in his white Nike long sleeve next to a 30 year old ish looking interviewer in a Barca jersey.

“So gavi, how is your day going?” The interviewer asked him.

“Bien, I got a good recovery session in this morning.” Pablo answered.

“And is that how most of your mornings go, with this ACL injury?” The interviewer asked as they turned.

“Most… either I workout and run with my partner Bella in the gym or around my neighborhood and I’ve been starting to train on grass back with my Barça squad.” -pablo

“And how’s that been? Does it feel good to be back with your team or do you rather home training with your partner?” -interviewer

“I like training with my team, it feels almost things are going back to normal but Bella pushes me to my limit.” -Pablo

“And is that in a good way that she pushes you to your limit?” -interviewer

Particularly interesting, you say? Is that a code for I'll add extra sass and shade to my answer? If so... you're probably right =D I'm kidding, I always try to be as subjective as can be... except for all the times I'm not subjective and settle for bullying. But I'll be kind this time... or will I?

Let's practice some armchair psychology on Leonid Toptunov's best friend, shall we? ...And by that I do just mean let's look at him a little more seriously than I usually do.

Whenever I say that I don't fully believe or trust him, I don't mean to attack his character - I do think that either his age or something else entirely (underlying mental issues, most likely related to trauma from the accident and subsequential events that unfolded afterwards like, oh, you know, losing his best friend and colleagues) must have taken their toll on him and so I do treat him like a sort of unreliable narrator. When your brain has barely had the time to finish fully developing and suddenly, overnight your life is in shambles, it's to be expected that you're not exactly going to act in the most rational of ways...

I don't want to say that, even when keeping all that in mind, Korol still seems slightly... odd to me... but, well, he does. For example, from Midnight in Chernobyl (from a bit about Yuvchenko):

(...) Natalia scoured the city for scarce and expensive ingredients to keep up his strength. She brought black caviar sandwiches to his bedside; his friend Sasha Korol came to visit and insisted he try ketchup instead. But Yuvchenko proved unable to eat anything, and he was placed on an IV.

What do you mean he basically tried to medicate his friend with ketchup?? I have... many questions... Is ketchup more nutritious than other foods condiments? I have a feeling this was out of sheer desperation to not lose another mate...

The whole bit about him not wanting to go with Toptunov to see the test because he was reading a medical journal is also, quite frankly, laughable. I wasn't aware that the magazine has a cool down and will disappear once you put it down, brother. Just say you were feeling kind of lazy that day, there's no shame in that.

Judging purely from his interview with Kupnyi, he seems to have lacked that burning passion for science we always see Toptunov described as having. Which is... just fine. You don't have to choose a job in a field you're super passionate about. I just thought it was worth mentioning since he seems to have had an attitude of well, it might as well be physics when choosing a career path. Anything but being sent to Afghanistan with the army (perfectly understandable).

He was most likely just as capable as Toptunov when it came to work, given that while Lyonya decided to become a SIUR, Korol stayed on a lower position by choice (or so he says), choosing a different path, basically.

He certainly made himself useful right after the disaster happened by everything from continuing to work on site to informing the families of the workers about their loved ones being transported to Moscow ect etc. Good deeds all around.

While he did not attend Toptunov's funeral (he was... on vacation... :| ), he attended someone else's not too long after:

Pictured closest to the grave (some speculated he's the other guy in the light shirt, second from the right, but I think otherwise, the shadows on his face have... a distinct look... I think.)

I will NOT comment on the fact that I think his relation with Lyonya was very close, closer than what I normally associate with typical friendships because I know fuckall about good relationships, so... who am I to judge.

I'm pretty sure that because of him there's a bit of confusion about who Toptunov's girlfriend was - not that it's an important piece of information TO YOU - but it's significant enough to consider. I won't get into that here, though, this is not about the fact that because two people mention two seemingly different women, it seems as if he had two girlfriends (good for him, I wish I had two girlfriends... one would also be more than acceptable).

Same with the whole "fight" he reported Toptunov as having with the tutor during uni - I don't know how, if he was apparently indeed involved in what happened after - he could have misremembered that while remembering other details about it. Unless he's misrepresenting what happened on purpose, that is, but that's also a questionable hypothesis.

I think that's that when it comes to my general "overview" of him... If I remember anything else later on, I'll make sure to add it to the post in a reblog or something.

i think... there are so many things to choose from. i think i'd save celebrimbor. i don't know how much of the troubles of the second age that would actually solve, but the way he died makes my heart ache, and i have such a soft spot for characters who try really hard (and especially the ones who fail)

(also i'd be afraid of unraveling events as i knew them by acting on anything bigger. big events have big effects when you alter them, and i'd hate to accidentally prevent elladan, elrohir, and arwen from being born)

i would not be asking him about any debates or the canonicity of a particular event, no. for one, it wouldn't really settle the argument because you couldn't really PROVE you actually got the information from him. and moreover, i dont consider word-of-god information to be canon. when authors reveal things in interviews years down the line it leads to silly little "well mom said-" fights in the fandom, which irritate me. basically, if it's important enough for them to speak on it, it should already be in the published material, and if it isn't-- well, i don't believe it's necessary to get their opinion on it. i'd rather make up my own mind based on the presented, published canon material

what i WOULD ask him is if he ever came up with a quenya or sindarin word for "mercy" that he forgot to write down, or if he had any thoughts on the matter to guide me. i've made some fumbling attempts at compounding words to reach something that would cover that concept, or at least come close, but i'm not satisfied yet. it bugs me for all that mercy is a concept baked into the universe there isn't an actual WORD for it in the languages he created. 'pity' is as close as we get

i'd love to talk to celebrian in particular because we know so little about her life outside of the way her family relates to her, and i'd like to get to know her as a person instead of galadriel and celeborn's daughter, arwen and the twins' mother, etc

4: Favourite historical era

Gah, man, this is difficult! Very broadly speaking, I guess the from the 1780s to 1920s is where a lot of my interest and knowledge lies, but that's not super specific, lol!

I also enjoy really ancient stuff, I just don't know that much about it. Like both classical antiquiety but also the iron age of MENA and the eastern mediterranean.

I feel like what attracts me is either very old stuff that harkens back to like... "how did some of these concepts work in such different circumstances, how were certain ideas formed by certain civilisations" or it's more recent stuff where it provides context for how we arrived at the current state of affairs.

If I had to choose something more concrete, maybe 1900-1920s? idk

9: Favourite historical film

So I already answered this, but in addition to 1917 and Portrait of a Lady on Fire, I also really like the movie Joyeux Noel about the Christmas truce of WW1.

I'd also like to use the opportunity to talk about an upcoming Danish movie about the Danish West Indies (the current US Virgin Islands) called Viften.

From IMDB:

"St. Croix, the Danish West Indies, 1848. Anna and Petrine are close friends. Both are women of color, but Anna is free and owns her housekeeper, the enslaved Petrine. Things are seemingly fine until rumors of a rebellion begin to swirl."

I wasn't able to find a trailer with English subs, but according to IMDB, the English title is "Empire".

(CW for racist imagery, both slavery related and eugenics related)

The original title means "The [hand] fan" and is a reference to the practice of using an enslaved child holding a hand fan as a ceiling fan.

The film is written by the same woman who plays the main character and based on an interview on the radio, the character she plays is a mixed race woman who attained as much power as a woman of colour was able to in that time and place and the movie does a lot with how that positions her both in relation to white people and in relation to the slaves she own.

The tone seems to be darkly satirical and very deliberately resistant to the sort of "one good white guy who's horrified by the evils of colonialism and puts things right" sort of narrative that a lot of Danish media tends to prefer to use when dicussing this period (when it does so at all).

(EDIT: apparently, it came out in spring and I just forgot to go see it, lol! I'll watch it as soon as I'm able).

27: Favourite historical “ What if… ” ?

I think what I find interesting in this regard is mixing and matching different types of societal structures, technological levels and religions. What if Christianity hadn't become dominant in Europe? What if absolute monarchies were still the norm with our current level of technological development? That sort of thing.

I usually don't like steampunk, but there are a few versions of steampunk that sort of get at that in a way I find interesting.

The specific example of a historical "what if" I like the best is the anime Ōoku (it's a manga originally, but I haven't read it) wherein a plague that kills something like 3/4ths of all men and boys results in well-considered societal changes to gender roles and gendered labour. It's not just a lazy "what if reverse genders" but an actually intelligent engagement with the situation it sets up.

The "what if" in Ōoku is similar to the other ones I posited in that it's essentially about "what if culture and society had taken a different turn at some point from what it did in reality? How would things be different -- and how would they be the same?"

I cannot express enough how important it is to look up and research any diagnoses, especially those regarding mental and behavioral health/development, before fully accepting what a diagnosing therapist or doctor has handed down. Especially if the diagnosis is of a highly stigmatized or rare condition.

I see these posts a lot on tumblr from people who spent years, even decades, with fairly common presentations of ASD, ADHD, and other relatively common conditions misdiagnosed to some of the societally-bleakest ones possible. BPD? Bipolar (especially Bipolar 2)? Schizoid personality disorder? Those aren't diagnoses that are going to help someone who doesn't have them.

First off, I want to say one thing: A label is only as good as the information attached to it applies to you. If you're happy to be diagnosed, that's great! If it's still taking time to reckon with a diagnosis? That's totally okay. A lot of people need to spend a long time with support, friends, and loved ones to adjust to having a daunting label assigned to them. This isn't to say that you should completely fob off your diagnosis, either.

Here's the biggest thing I came to understand when it came to the world of diagnostics: A correct diagnosis is like receiving your own Dewey Decimal number at the library: It can take you to where the research and peer-supported information about your condition is available for you.

When I first began seeing my psychiatrist of now over 5 years, he tried to diagnose me with Schizoid Personality Disorder. There is nothing wrong with that, except that it wasn't the right diagnosis for me. I went home after his big revelation with me, looked up what credible sources like the NIH, WHO, and DSM-5 to read about what defined a Schizoid personality and how people who have agreed to interviews and published studies attest to feeling.

When I read the description of the symptoms and common mental and emotional traits for people with Schizoid Personalities, it was like reading a long-form antonym; the opposite of a description of how I felt and what was really going on in my mind.

So, I took that information with me to my next session with him, and after having found other related conditions in the same general family as Schizoid Personality Disorder, I found that I was really Schizotypal, which is a very, very, very different diagnosis. To be sure, I texted the links to the articles I'd read to my psychiatrist, and told him at our next meeting, "I don't feel you have an accurate grasp of what my experience and behaviors are. This [Schizotypal] is a more accurate summary of my life experience, while Schizoid sounds like a different person's diagnosis. Can we try this over again?"

My psychiatrist asked me some more detailed questions, including questions about whether I was showing him an accurate reflection of my normal personality when we were in-session. I answered that I didn't, and so my personality was much more reserved and cool toward him than how I usually felt and behaved around people I'm comfortable with.

I walked out of his office that day with a new diagnosis: Autism, and Schizotypal Personality Disorder.

About 2 years later came the biggest revelation of all: Dissociative Identity Disorder.

My life became very lonely after I came out publicly about that one.

Nevertheless, never be afraid to do your own research, ask questions, or debate differential diagnoses. If the shoe fits you, then it fits you, and you and your therapist or healthcare provider can move forward from there. If trying to study it reveals it's shaped for a horse and you can barely walk around with it on, then it may be worth a longer discussion.

Fort Heaven Chapter 2

Chapter 2

Evon’s townhouse was in a decent part of town, surrounded by a few buildings with a similar look. As far as he knew, his landlord was the same as everyone else’s but he’d never actually asked either. He was friendly, sure, but he tried not to be nosey.

He parked his sedan beside Trinity’s car which hadn’t been driven in a few weeks. Mentally, he noted that he needed to take her car to work soon.

“I’m home,” Evon announced as he passed through the threshold. He kicked his shoes off at the door and tossed his messenger bag close by. He’d worry about work later.

“I’m in the kitchen!” he heard his sister call back.

He walked down the short hall and turned into the kitchen where Trinity was cutting some potatoes. It was rare to see her making anything from scratch so he felt the need to ask.

“What are you…doing?”

She turned around and smiled but didn’t put the knife down. Either it was her intention to creep him out or she simply forgot she had it.

“I saw this recipe for potato soup!” Trinity answered enthusiastically. “It looks really easy and delicious—plus it’s cold out so…you know…soup weather.”

“Right.” He slowly agreed and then leaned against the nearest counter. It was half a bar—not enough to actually seat a person but rather add a few inches of counter space. Nothing in the town house was bigger than it needed to be but that was something Evon actually liked a lot about it.

“So,” Trinity said and regained his attention. She finally placed the knife down beside the cutting board. “How was your day?”

Her expectant face was earnest and even hopeful which made him feel more like the older sibling in the dynamic. Though he had been feeling that a lot since she moved in. It was more than fair however—she did a lot for him when he was young.

In many ways, they looked similar but each took after one parent more than the other. Most could tell instantly that they were related but not everyone could guess siblings right from the start.

They were about the same height but Trinity often made herself taller with heels much to her brother’s irritation. Each had dark skin, round eyes, and curly hair—Trinity’s was just longer. Evon sometimes thought about growing his out to see if anyone would mistake them as twins but he could never grow his hair past his jaw.

“Um…” Evon mumbled before clearing his throat and proceeding, “It was interesting? Me and Yasmine are working on a new story finally.”

“Oh yeah?” She grinned.

“Yup. She and the boss think it’ll get money so…I don’t see any issues.”

“That’s good,” Trinity said and sighed in relief, “We need the money.”

Her wording was particular and Evon didn’t miss the dip in her tone. “…we need money? Like…badly…?”

She didn’t look directly at him which, in itself, told him all he needed to know.

“It’s a bill.”

Evon clasped his hands together and wrung them together for a second. He let out a forceful breath before he asked, “What’s it for?”

Trinity shook her head in disappointment that was undoubtedly misplaced in herself. “The last doctor’s visit. Apparently my insurance didn’t cover it and they tacked on costs that really added up…”

He was afraid to ask further but it was going to mostly be his money in jeopardy so he had to.

“How much?”

“Twenty…” she said with a low voice, “…twenty thousand…”

It wouldn’t do any good to react the way he wanted to so Evon hung his head. He only had around half of that in his bank account. Paying it would certainly be impossible.

“When’s it due?”

Trinity reached over the counter with a pained expression and touched his hand. “I’m going to contact my lawyer and let her know. She’s already working on those other times I was overcharged and mistreated.”

It was a lot to take in—especially with the deadline for the story hanging over his head as well. “Even if she can’t do anything…” Evon said after a long pause, “I’ll figure it out. I’ll make the money you need off of this piece.”

“Sure?” Trinity asked immediately, only slightly shaking the confidence in himself. “I mean…your articles make good money but…”

“This one is going to be different,” he said without thinking. Internally, he cursed. Why was he making so many promises that he couldn’t keep? What was with this sudden and alarming self sabotaging behavior?

There wasn’t time to mull the questions over since he had to get straight to work researching. He wasn’t sure where to start so he opened a few tabs to take the story in a couple of directions.

First there was the Ford line of questioning that had to do with his involvement in Fort Heaven and whether or not there was any merit behind the replacement theory. Then he had a tab dedicated to the history of Fort Heaven since he didn’t know all that much about it aside from the rumors. Lastly, he had a site where members could anonymously (or not) post their accounts of being mistreated within the church.

The information on Ford and his ex-wife was limited and quickly turned into meaningless ramblings. Evon moved onto the history—at the very least he could start to get the foundation of the church on paper and it’s history in his own words.

His eyes scanned across the screen quickly as he speed read the text.

Fort Heaven was founded in 1969 by Harold Bartlow and was impressively popular for years. That only lasted until there were many money scandals and Harold was revealed to be the greedy fraud most people already suspected he was. At that point, the church should have logically died but Harold’s son, Simon, stepped up to the mantel.

Simon’s reign kept Fort Heaven as more of an underground organization where those who wanted it could find it but where they would also stay away from the public eye. From what Evon could tell, Simon actually cared about the religious aspects of Fort Heaven as opposed to his father’s love for money.

That was the time period in which the Ford scandal occurred but it was hard to find definitive proof that Ford was ever in Fort Heaven.

Evon rubbed against his forehead and closed his eyes tightly.

The history was fascinating but it wasn’t anything that people couldn’t just look up on their own. Every lead that he knew Yasmine wanted to follow seemed to be a dead end.

After a few minutes of staring blankly and slightly dissociating, Evon pulled up the video chat so he could call his friend and see if she was having any better luck.

Her image appeared in the next few seconds and it was clear that she’d been at it for a while already.

“Please tell me you’ve got something good.”

That was the exact opposite of what Evon wanted to hear. With a frown he replied, “Not really.”

“Damnit.” Yasmine ran a hand through her hair and looked off camera for a second. “I sent an enquiry to Ford Hyland but I haven’t gotten anything.”

A laugh came out of him before he could stop it. “It’s only been a few hours; give it time.”

“What if he doesn’t want to do the interview though?” Her voice was thick with worry and it made Evon wonder if she had a financial crisis bothering her too.

“I was starting to think…” He spoke after a second, somewhat disregarding her question, “maybe if we can track down ex-members of Fort Heaven that they can give us a unique inside look and we can relate that—without the interview—to Ford Hyland.”

The idea came to him as he spoke it and the second he was done a new hope was born in him. Sometimes he impressed himself and it was definitely one of those moments.

It seemed to give Yasmine some life back as well. A smile crept across her face and she started to nod. “That could work…I’d read it…”

“Film,” Evon added, still on a mental role. He wasn’t going to question it but rather let the ideas flow. “We can film some interviews with ex-members about their experiences with Fort Heaven since no one ever talks about what it’s like.”

“Did we just…” his friend paused, let out a dry laugh, then continued, “make our conspiracy click-bait story into an actual, dramatic story?”

“Maybe…” He chewed over his lip for a second as his idea played over in his head as a final product. If they filmed and edited it correctly, they could have a real hit on their hands. “How much do you know about filming?”

“I can use my cell phone?” Yasmine suggested and shrugged.

“That can only get us so far…”

She crossed her arms and leaned away from the camera. “Didn’t Trinity go to film school?

“Yeah a long time ago,” Evon answered with a huff. He knew what it was he would end up doing and while he was secretly excited about it, he didn’t want to seem too eager to suggest it.

“Then her film buddies. Aren’t some of them camera men—directors too, right?” Yasmine asked and led them straight down the path Evon was looking forward to.

“I can ask but I think Kate and Lawrence are busy…” he mumbled just loud enough for her to hear. It was true that Kate and Lawrence were both friends with Trinity and also working together on a short film. Other than them, there was one friend that his sister had from long before college who just so happened to also be an excellent director, producer, and camera man.

“So Russet?” Yasmine said his name with a smirk.

Almost since Evon could remember, Russet had been around. He and Trinity met in school and became instant best friends, spending every moment they could together. Trinity was the one person outside of family who stuck by Russet when he began taking puberty blockers at age twelve. When everyone else distanced themselves from the strange kid, Trinity’s bond only tightened.

And then there was Evon on the outside looking in.

He had always found Russet to be especially cool and tried every moment he could to inject himself into his and his sister’s conversations. It never worked and seemed to only cause Russet to become more and more irritated with him.

“When was the last time you saw him?” Yasmine asked and brought Evon’s thoughts back to their current conversation.

“Um…” he paused and had to really think on it. “He’s been by since Trinity moved in here with me but it was a few months back. Maybe…three months?”

The woman chuckled and rested her chin in her palm. “Did he stay for long?”

Evon couldn’t help but smile. If it was anyone besides Yasmine, he’d probably be irritated by the invasion of privacy. Yet, with her, it was always comfortable to share his inner thoughts and be open. She usually had some good advice too.

“No. He came to get Trinity and then left. Dropped her off at the entrance.”

“Dick,” Yasmine scoffed.

“Hey!” Evon raised his voice to defend the man who couldn’t defend himself. “He’s not doing it to be a jerk—he’s trying to shield me.”

“You seriously still think that?” She responded, “He just doesn’t want to have any kind of emotional conversation with you.”

“It’s an unspoken thing.”

Yasmine rolled her eyes. “I’m gonna say something to him when I see him.”

“You were so excited about it a second ago!” Evon pointed out.

“That was before I learned he was back to ignoring you. I figured with Trinity being with you now that there would be some forced interaction.”

He frowned, trying not to think about the fact she was right. That didn’t mean he had to say it aloud or concede.

“I’m giving him the benefit of the doubt.”

“For twenty years?”

“Well…” Evon started and tried not to think about the negatives. “He’ll be ready to talk eventually. Either that or he’ll pretend nothing’s amiss.” Even his words sounded like lies and it was very clear that his best friend wasn’t buying a single second of it.

Whatever he felt or thought didn’t matter—with their story on the line, he’d have to face Russet and be prepared to not back down. He’d have to be upfront and logical—not giving any emotion away which would, for Evon, be much, much easier said than done.

Hi anon! Before I dive in thanks for saying you love my blog that's very nice. Okay here we go:

First of all, full disclosure, I have not always had the healthiest relationship with food, so that does probably color the way I see this a bit.

So anyway, this is a loaded question.

Firstly I'd like to make it clear that I don't think the writers intended Mike to have an eating disorder.

Here's why:

If that was their intention, it would have been made far more explicit, as it was with Chrissy. The only "evidence" for Mike having an ED is:

1. We never really see him actually eat.

2. Finn Wolfhard is skinny.

To the first point, I'd like to first say that in every scene we have of Mike eating, he is upset or distracted in some way. So having him pick at his food would make sense for that reason alone from the director's perspective.

Secondly, I watched an interview with Millie (wish I could find it but alas you'll have to trust me. Actually as a matter of fact it might have been during her Hot Ones interview? Anway not important.) In this interview she was talking about filming scenes where she had to eat. And she talked about how eating the same thing for twelve hours straight while shooting the take over and over can be absolutely nauseating. So what she does is either pretends to eat, or spits the food into a bucket after each take, which as you can imagine is unpleasant. So it's entirely possible that this was a factor in the director's decision to not have Finn eating during these scenes. Especially considering my previous point about Mike being upset in the scenes anyway.

Now, let's dig into the implications of some people having the headcanon that Mike has an ED.

One the one hand, if someone who suffers from an ED finds comfort in the thought that a character they otherwise relate to may be experiencing similar struggles, I don't want to tell them not to do that.

However. I feel that a headcanon like that may lead into dangerous territory of the romanticizing eating disorders variety. Especially considering the fact that Finn Wolfhard is conventionally attractive in addition to being thin. It's also worth mentioning that there seems to be a lot of people in the By1er community, especially young people, who take great pride in relating to Mike. And there's nothing wrong with that, but you can probably see where I'm going with this as it relates to the idea of Mike having an ED.

I would like to also raise the question: if Mike wasn't played by a thin actor, would people still suspect him of having an ED / HC him as having an ED?

The answer is no. And the actor's physique has nothing to do with whether the character has an ED in this case. Finn wasn't asked to lose weight for this role. He's just a thin kid, that's just how he looks.

In conclusion, no Mike wasn't written as having an ED. And the headcanon has great potential to be problematic, though there is some nuance there, and I am not claiming that you are inherently problematic if you have that headcanon. I just think it is important to be cautious about the topic of eating disorders in online spaces full of young people.
