First guess is that it's like those pre-order advertisements. I see them a lot in some hobbies. It's not actually a pre-order announcement, but an announcement that there is intent to open a pre-order. Those placeholder fics feel like they have the exact same use. Not to actually announce the fic, but to announce the intent of writing the fic. If at all, which leads to the next point:

It's inda like a dog pissmarking, but with ideas for a fanfic, bit crude but that's what it feels like. It's placing down the idea that this is your fic-idea, it's your OC DO NOT STEAL label, and anyone who does the same later down the line is stealing from you. This works better in scenes where you actually make money, but is absolutely stupid in fanfic places of all things.

You assume that the person doing this is doing this in good faith wanting to be part of the fandom-fanfic space, rather than them just having a need for attention and engagement. Some of these people don't do these things because they want to make people excited for a new fic, it's because they only view fandom as a short term engagement with hopefully some kind of "profit." If that's interactions and attention, or them being able to lead you to their patreon, ko-fi or commission sheet. Doesn't matter. They basically have advertiser brain, "If you don't pay for it, you're the product." in a way.

Which leads us to the last point: that's why some of these placeholder fics contain more fandoms, ships, tags, and demands for being given prompts than any normal fic. Because they want to see what fandom reacts the most to it, and ergo gives them the most attention. They are here for the attention, so it goes quantity over quality, and they'll see where it goes from there.

Genre: epic fantasy, military fantasy Publisher: DAW Books (Penguin Random House) Year: 2006

It's easy to tell when certain traits are passed on through family. One of my oldest friends has the exact same sarcastic laugh as her brother. Another friend has a daughter that does the exact same expression of puppy eyes when she wants something. Me? Well, my mom buys stuff off instagram ads like nobody's business. While I don't do that exact same thing, I am easily influenced.

So when I came across a post by @aplpaca about one of her favorite childhood series, I was cautiously intrigued. Then, while waiting for one of my other holds, I discovered my local library had the entire quartet, so I grabbed a copy of Inda, which I read in a single sitting, and I have no regrets (justice for Dogpiss).

Where to even begin? One of my all time favorite tropes is books with child narrators when the books aren't necessarily for children (see: Ender's Game, This Tender Land, Dear Edward). I think children are such an underutilized point of view in books not aimed for children and Sherwood Smith manages it all so well, it's almost like there are two stories happening at once: one in the idyllic world of children and the other harsh light of adulthood.

Inda (who gives Kaladin vibes for the Stormlight Archive fans) is such a singular title character. This first book focuses on his childhood from a bright-eyed second prince to an exiled privateer on the high seas, this book takes you places. Inda, while clearly the main character, is not the only POV character by far. The world Smith builds is fascinating, queernormative, and expansive. It's hard to encompass everything this book is in one short review, so I'll try and hone in on a few specifics.

Smith is such a master of characterization that even the main antagonist, Aldren, most commonly referred to in the book as the Sierlaef, feels tragic. As a young boy with a disability and a distant father, it's so easy to see how in his desperate search for validation, he reaches for the poisonous influence of his uncle. No child should have to bear the weight of such responsibility, distance, and aloofness. As he grows and the adults around him fail him, and he rebuffs all pivotal moments of redemption and his inevitable descent into villainy becomes a tragedy. Just the right word here, a genuine friend there, and the Sierlaef would have grown to be a noble man, if not a good one. Instead, by the end of the novel he goes from misguided, angry teen to a selfish, dangerous, obsessed man. Every single character has this level of detailed motivation, story, and outcome—even the ones you don't like.

This book made me laugh, it made me cry. (Yes, I did cry real tears for a character named Dogpiss by his fellow child soldiers). The love depicted in this book—familial, friendship, duty—is exquisite. There aren't really any romantic relationships I can point to in this installment, most marriages are marriages of convenience or politics and romance isn't a factor. This is a book of loyalty, bonds, and destiny. I can't recommend it enough.

Hoooh boy you're definitely not gonna be prepared for what Nonny and the Schneidermann's are wearing then, because Jesus Christ me and my friend truly went "the only people who would love you are the ones with more or equally atrocious fashion styles" with that one out of the way, let's start tame with Y/N because I forgot a key characteristic of hers :)

-Nothing much to say about Y/N, Beige stop that reveals her midriff and light blue shorts, BIG RED CLOWNSHOES WITH HEELS, also the thing I forgot was that she literally does not have a face and has to manually apply waterproof makeup so that she looks like a normal person everyday. The game starts off with her make up routine actually lmao I think it wasn't much of a problem for her, because most of her face was hidden thanks to her bangs anyway, but she still enjoys doing it

-Here comes our favourite Hackerman meow meow, so like, his outfits that I described before? Still pretty accurate, Mans got Black hoodie, though I think he has grey sweatpants instead of black pants, oh and also he's got BIG PINK BALLERINA SHOES WHOSE STRAPS GO O N T O P OF HIS SWEATPANTS AND END AT HIS LOWER THIGHS O_O I didn't describe them last time, partly because I totally forgot he had them until I saw his traditional character sheet and partly because I didn't see them in the game, since his sprite cuts off right above where the shoe straps end. So yeah, do with that information what you will. Also he had a straight up Lenny face at first, no eyecolor, just ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°). Also also he wasn't 7 feet 8, he was 9' 2" O_O .

Extra quotes we wrote on his sheet: "giiirl, get back inda BASEMENT" "Are u lost, babeygrill?" "He's got NO lips!" "He's never gonna get a kiss kiss very UGLY!" "No kiss for him"

-J. Schneidermann (because writing his full name would clutter this already long ask oof) so, pink cap with a heart on it uwu. Straight up rainbow dash hair, except short, no face because he anime blushed too hard (he actually has one, unlike Y/N but we just didn't draw it) a long sleeved shirt that's various shades of blue and INTENSE shoulder spike (not horizontally, they go vertically up to his ears) green saggy ass pants that approximately reach his ankles and have GUTSCHI written on it (makes him look like a fucked up hamster ngl) lots of chains on his wrists and pants, ears are pierced, and the most notable detail, he has mismatched shoes that he shares with his cousin, one red high heel and one... black boot or black sneaker I can't tell. He's also smoking a red vape in the pic and has a gold chocker

-B. Schneidermann, black fluffy hair that apparently also covering his face because we didn't draw him one either (rip Schneidermann face enjoyers) mirroring his cousins general outfit, except we can actually see the divide between his legs with the red loose pants he's wearing, rainbow long sleeved shirt, I think he was also supposed to have the ridiculous shoulder spikes but they look more like a high collared cape that's reaaaaaaaally short instead, 1 gold bracelet on each of his wrists and smoking a golden vape too, wears the other part of the mismatched shoe pair. He's also holding a banana and a hotdog (I think it's a hotdog at least) also wears a silver choker

Btw if you're wondering what the hell is up with the Schneidermann shoes, it's inspired by another thing we had to do in German period, be basically got a story from a newspaper that we had to retell in another way, the story we got was "Asian man steals peoples left shoes" like, specifically only the left one, which reminds me that Kim Hojungseo would be shoe thief considering that we drew a shit ton of shoes on his sheet lmao.

Extra writing on Hojungseo's sheet: "I only listen to REAL music!" "Save the fucking turtles b-baka! ùwú" "how can mirrors be real, when our eyes aren't?" "Crying on the inside"

I think I'll probably yassify part of their designs, not too much tho, oughta stay true to their OG vibe after all 😔✊ also this felt like a My Immortal chapter with these lengthy character descriptions, still kinda feel that I don't do em justice, they rlly are the kinda character designs that you simply need to ✨experience✨for yourself to truly understand. on the topic of  crests  i want to take a moment to talk about dimitri’s .

crests are  ,  essentially  ,  “gifts”  from god .  they’re snippets of divinity given a corporeal form and put into the bodies of  mortal men .  &  you know what mortal bodies weren’t made to do ?

now where the fuck am i going with this  ---

dimitri has a  minor crest  ,  however it is not constantly active as indicated by the battle mechanics in - game .  which implies  ,  then  ,  that the extraordinary strength that dimitri possesses is a  passive trait .  when his crest is activated  ,  however  ,  it increases his strength rather significantly but beyond dimitri having strength on his own there must be a  reason  he  ( & everyone else  ,  frankly  )  rarely chooses to activate his crest .  that reason  ,  i personally believe  ,  is because even if his body is structured to handle the  passive  effects of his crest  ,  to go beyond those passive limits goes  beyond what any human body is capable of withstanding .  when his crest isn’t active  ,  dimitri can lift a carriage up onto his shoulders and carry it a ways  ;  he’ll be sore a bit afterward  ,  but it isn’t too terribly heavy  &  some general stretches can help loosen his muscles back up .

when his crest  is  active  ,  dimitri could carry a pubescent dragon on his shoulders .  it would  hurt like hell  and he would only be able to keep it up for oh  ,  20  -  30 minutes tops ?  wouldn’t be able to move very fast  /  far  ,  etc  ...  but  in the process his body would effectively  tear itself apart from the inside out .  if it were only active for a short time  /  he didn’t do anything over the top  ,  he will simply suffer severe muscle tears that will require several days of bed rest to heal properly .  if he is forced to maintain something severely physically taxing for an extended period of time  ,  however  ...  it can kill him .  it can cause organ failure  ,  it can make his heart  explode  ,  he can bleed from the mouth  ,  the eyes  ,  the ears  ...  his skin rips open in places  ,  as though an invisible weapon were dragging itself over his flesh  ... etc .

this is with a  minor crest .  if he had a  major crest  ( as his daughter does in my blog canon ending )  he could successfully carry an  entire  ,  fully grown dragon  for  several miles  but again  ,  at the cost of severe physical deterioration  ( & faster , more painful at that )  and an increased chance of death .

with this all said  i do want to note that dimitri  ,  in my blog canon  ,  has his crest active frequently during battles post - time skip prior to the battle of gronder .  that he can move at all is a wonder given how horribly fucked up his muscles are and there’s an increased risk the longer time goes on that he’s going to quite literally kill himself if he doesn’t rest  /  cease using his crest for a while .

Ah Aurora, I... have mixed feelings on you. Her wings are cool and I like the hood but girl your outfit needs to be a little bit more... more. You are the Fairy of the North put on an actual coat for god sake. Or like a parka dress, i don't know just something but no. She has the same problems as Lovix, furs a nice touch but shows way too much skin for me to take her seriously. Still like her though.

Now Nebula, I've warmed up to her over the years, Her wings are nice albeit a bit samey with the other earth fairies, then again she is their general so I guess that makes sense. I like her hair and her outfit is just the right color for me to like, that said I feel like a general would wear actual armor when fighting, but she looks good anyway.

Bloom using Ice magic? Icy feels a disturbance in the force.

This look Morganna gives Roxy just feels like a parent being mildy dissapointed in their kid for getting into trouble, which tbf is inda what's happening.

On a lighter note, Morganna continues to have the best faces

But seriously this scene just slays so well. Aisha turning on the Winx and becoming what they were fighting just a few episodes prior is just... it's such a strong move with actual impact, cause she's doing it willingly not out of mind control like Dark Bloom. Also the detail of the rain, rain is kinda commonly used for sad scenes but here it actually makes sense.

Aisha is the fairy of fluids, and has control over water, in an attempt to keep her promise to Nabu, to not cry she has stopped, but perhaps subconciously she uses her powers to cry, she makes the sky cry for her. Aisha I am so sorry.

Color me surprised Stella grabs someone and throws them too. Smart girl!

Aisha actually fighting the Winx, hurts my soul cause these are the girls who helped her free the pixies without knowing her, who refused to leave her behind in her worst fear, who stuck with her when she was blinded and fought for her homeworld like it was their own one nearly losing her life in the process who Aisha thought did and cried for her.

In her rage she is blind to all of that, cause she is so desperate to not lose someone else that she almost loses what she still has. You can either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain

tribune of the people is an american revolutionary newspaper and they post about struggles happening all over the world and sometimes post translated articles from other revolutionary newspapers. 

tjen folket is a norwegian revolutionary newspaper and they have a lot of their articles translated into english!

a nova democracia is a brazlian revolutionary newspaper that has their additions translated into english as well!

when it comes to theory i do think it’s important to study marx(i think one of the most important documents to start grasping marxist theory is wage, labor and capital), engels and lenin. but some other really important things that have helped me a lot is:

I did some cleaning. Then I did some cleaning while wearing a weighted vest. @icryyoumercy, have you ever tried one of those? It’s like a weighted blanket you can wear. Only you have to be careful because you can hurt yourself, and I don’t have specifics on how.

Then I sat in bed in a weighted vest with legs under weighted blanket and wrote a thing about books that I will never share, and read significant quantities of Inda, and then it was bedtime and that was acceptable and also I could start looking at Hyacinth again.

can you tell me more about inda? im curious

so Inda is the main character of the Inda Quartet by Sherwood Smith. its kind of a historical fantasy series? its not set on earth and theres magic involved, but the story is more focused on politics and world events than the magic (tho the magic plays a part in that).

but yeah the series follows Inda, the second son of a prince, throughout his life starting with his childhood at the Royal Academy, where nobility learn strategy, fighting, etc.  he does pretty well there, gets mixed up in some stuff, Stuff Happens, he ends up on a trade ship, and then a pirate ship, and then stuff interconnects with a larger war that had been brewing since he was a kid (these are over the course of a bunch of years). so thats like a vague gist

some stuff i like/that i found interesting about the series

Inda is autistic (its not outright stated in the book but its easily intuited imo also i emailed the author and she said it was intentional).  and like ive never really seen that in a fantasy book series before (renarin and steris are great and i love them but theyre not main viewpoint characters Yet) so thats really nice.  but yeah as a character his thoughts and emotional processing were super relatable. and even tho his Thing is that hes like super good at strategy and problem solving, it doesnt come off as a Wow Autistic Savant Lets Marvel At It type of thing bc the book actually goes into his thought processes and shows you how he gets to his ideas. also his friends are respectful and accepting of his differences and its great.

the series is has a really interesting emotional vibe to it that gives a really cool sense of the passage of time. i dont really know how to describe it more than that other than if it was music it would have a lot of violins

the characters are super complex and their dynamics are super interesting. and like even when they do stuff thats like What The Fuck My Dude its like not in a bad way bc characterization is well done so its like “of course thats what theyre gonna do. the bastard.” coughcoughFoxcough. they just feel very real in general

the culture is super open about sex and romance (theres a lot of talk about sex, but its not shown explicitly if thats a thing youre not a fan of). polyamory is super common and not looked down on and neither are different sexualities.  There are major characters who are bi and gay, and also lots of minor characters who are also.  Theres also at least one character whos grey-ace and Tdor reads as demi imo.  Inda is polyamorous, as are most of the main characters.  (also on the authors website theres a big thing about stuff that happens after the end of the series and theres a group of characters that end up in a man-his boyfriend-boyfriends wife/girlfriend-her other husband relationship)

theres a bunch of more mundane uses for magic. like theres a spell that can prevent someone from getting pregnant unless they drink a specific tea, so thats used as a birth control thing.  theres a spell where people can make a baby, like automatically without waiting 9 months and regardless of the number of people doing the spell or their genders.  like one character has a single mom who did the spell by herself, and whos grandparents are lesbians who did the spell to get his mom.  

the societies are pretty interesting, like Inda’s country is loosely Mongolian inspired, with some weird Spartan-esque stuff thrown in.  Most of the characters arent white, with the exception being the Venn (the country that the Marlovans, Inda’s people, are at war with), who are nordic-inspired (literally nordic is prob more accurate tho.  theyre descended from vikings who somehow got into a magic space rift and ended up on the planet the series takes place on. but that was way before the series happens. i got that confirmed by the author via email also).  also theres pirate societies and thats always great

but yeah. its a bit heavy with worldbuilding to start off with (lots of names) but its really super good and i wish more people knew about it.

will never be able to stop thinking about inda’s accidental betrayal to hadand in teaching sponge the odni and how that one (1) lil decision he made based on concern, sympathy, and devotion to his bestest of friends at the fresh young age of 10 would lead to the ruination of evred’s relationship with hadand. fuckin kills me. so many good intentions, all around! hadand only introduced inda to the odni because her mother requested it, out of concern for her favorite son who’d been stolen from her (sent into the jaws of the sierandael and all his cruel plottings!). hadand trusted inda to keep it a secret because inda never breaks his word and is so earnest in his honesty and shit, always! inda saw sponge hurting and alone and is just too goddamn full of kindness that he offered sponge a hand, some minor comfort in his hellhole of a childhood--would he have made the same decision had he known the extent of the importance of secrecy for marlovan women in keeping their odni from men? maybe! but also, having been raised in the patriarchal society maybe even having the importance explained to him in detail might not have been enough! he’s just a little guy!! and for the same reason sponge fails to grasp the reason why hadand never offered to teach him as she did her brother. he only sees the secret, has zero comprehension of how marlovan women have to work in secret due to the power imbalance in their society . . . he doesn’t see any of that, since as far as he knows, he and hadand were raised together, learned together, teamed up in the face of the sierlaef together--EXCEPT now in this one thing! this secret! this betrayal, a refusal to offer help in full against his brother. being abused as he was throughout his life, sponge had to learn so so much wariness and caution and suspicion. you can hardly blame him that he discovers this secret hadand kept from him, of all people, and feels betrayed, even when that’s the furthest thing possible from the truth. can hardly blame his resentment, the distance and mistrust (not mis exactly, but neither full trust, in the woman that he should have been closer to than anyone) that grows between them over the years (since he didn’t confront her early on and they couldn’t reach a resolution over the odni training until it was too late for their political life). all because of one choice inda made trying to protect his friend.

also no fucking wonder sponge attached to and fell for inda so fuckin hard, specifically tied to this moment as well, but this post is already a wall of text yeehaw

Aliens vs Names.

On a spacecraft not so far away, but just out of sight. A small alien research ship had kidnapped collected three humans from Space Station Beta. To their surprise, and to the surprise of the humans, they were not so different. The captivity had ended, the research begun...

It was around this time that the humans began to interact with the aliens.

Upon being collected by the extraterrestrial beings, it was immediately apparent to them that these creatures were intelligent. Incredibly so. Just as themselves.

The beings upon the ship immediately felt remorseful at having plucked the creatures from their station so rudely. They attempted to make vague gestures of apologies. They offered food and comfort, before planning on releasing them, hoping maybe to at least learn something.

To the humans, what was at first a startling, shocking, exciting, and absolutely terrifying experience, soon became somewhat familiar. The aliens were clearly attempting to communicate, just like an earthling would who spoke another language.

After a few days of listening to the human's speech patterns, the aliens, with their vastly superior lingual capabilities, (like that of a highly advanced parrot, as Jeeves had said in the early stages) began to vocalise coherently in English.

Before long, the humans felt calmer and the two species began to trade knowledge.

Alzec, as he introduced himself, was a young voyager, lucky to be on this small mission at all. The Many, having not paid attention to it in a few millenia, had thought Earth an unstable vegetation planet, housing few organic specimens, possibly close to extinction, and sent the intern with the crew for some light recon. Today, with his slightly better language ability, 'Alzec' was allowed to interact with the strange new species.

The questions began..

"Yes?"

"Why do you call Human Brian, Brian?"

"because it's his name."

"is he not a Human Sarah?"

"no, that's my name"

"but your mother was also a Human Sarah. Your father too. Why did Sarahs create a Brian? Is it because he is defective? Has he evolved?" Alzec's face brightens "could it be because he is a male?"

"What? No, his name is Brian. My name is a Sarah, my mum's name was Joan. His mum's name is Melinda"

"M-mel - inda"

".... D... Do you think all humans have the same name?"

"Yes. You are Human Sarahs" Alzec is visibly confused.

"What? No.. /I'm/ Sarah. That's Brian. We are both Human."

"but your species, it is Human Sarah."

"no.. Human. Just human. My name is Sarah. You know what a name is, don't you?"

"the vocalisation by which you identify classes of objects." Alzec looks around the room "table, table, chair, chair, chair, table." he states, matter-of-factly.

Sarah ponders, bewildered for a moment, she'd never thought about the concept individual names before.

"I am a human, and Brian is human. We are humans.

But.. To tell each other apart we have specific names. Given to us by our parents.. Or sometimes friends"

"to distinguish? Like to say 'the table of red'?"

"Yeah, kinda. I'm Sarah, that's Brian, and you know Jeeves." Sarah points to the smartly dressed, stoic man by the window.

"I see... So.. You are Human of Sarah. A Sarah human! Human Sarah"

"Just Sarah is fine, we know I'm human, so you don't have to say it."

"but.. Now I know you are Sarah? What do I do now?"

"Call me Sarah."

"but you told me not to call you by which I already know that you are"

Sarah takes a moment to understand the words

"Y-yes but I have told you my name is Sarah, so please address me as the name I give you. Just as I call you Alzec.

"but Alzec is my human"

"pardon?"

"Alzec, it is not a Sarah. It is a thing. A table. A Human. Not a Sarah or a Brian."

"... Are you saying you don't have a name? But your captain, he's Zeclen?"

"He is a Zeclen, I am an Alzec, that is my human, my function. Just as you say you are 'astro-nort' functionary, " he tilted his head "why do you seem not happy?"

"You don't have a name..."

Within in seconds, Sarah, Brian, and Jeeves were discussing what names to give to the Alzec. After an hour and a half they finally decided on a name. Strong, but sweet. Traditional but well-known. Historical, yet somewhat contemporary in use.. And friendly..

Gerald.

The Alzec.

He felt so special, his very own human name. Given to him specially by his new friends.

Now to find out what a "friend" is..

Dunno if this message got through, but Inda by Sherwood Smith. It's the first in a fantasy quartet, and just has AMAZING world building (although the 3rd person omniscient throws people at first, but there's a reason for it; she has a specific narrator in mind and reasons as to why they are able to see everything) But yeah. It's an great series that has super diverse characters and one of her later books has an explicitly ace biromantic lead and generally just characters that happen to be queer
