Spring Magic: Herbs, Spells, & Charms for Cleansing & Prosperity

Spring creeps into the Northern Hemisphere, awakening much of the land's greenery from its slumber. The spring birds are returning, the flowers and trees will soon be blossoming, and the time for spring magic has arrived.

For some spring has already come, as the 01st of February marks the folkloric return of spring and the changing of the seasons for many cultures; and others find themselves at spring's threshold, mere weeks away from the turn of the seasons. Either way, now is the perfect time to take advantage of the magic that spring has to offer. I've created and curated a collection of spells, charms, and magical workings for cleansing (of a space, item, or of the self), prosperity, and plenty more money matters that are perfect to include in your work this spring. Enjoy!

WHEN IS SPRING?

There are three main systems used for determining when spring arrives - the astronomical system, the meteorological system, and the solar or folkloric system. The astronomical system is determined by the sun and moon's locations in relation to the earth, marking the seasonal start dates at the time of the equinoxes and solstices, though in many practices and throughout history, these were seen as the height of the season, not the beginning. The meteorological system is determined by when the weather shifts to best fit meteorological circumstances associated with that season. The solar and folkloric system is that which is determined by the local lore and customs of a people.

So, when does spring begin in the Northern Hemisphere?

-Per the astronomical system: 20th of March. -Per the meteorological system: 01st of March. -Per the solar and folkloric system: Varies, but typically about halfway between the winter solstice and the spring equinox. Imbolc and Saint Brigid's Day (festivals which hail from Ireland, Scotland, and the Isle of Man) are celebrated on the 01st of February, marking the first day of spring; the traditional Chinese calendar sees spring's start within the 03rd - 05th of February; and some follow the opinion of Marcus Terentius Varro (a Roman scholar, polymath, and author) who pinpointed the start of spring as the 07th of February.

HERBS & INGREDIENTS TO INCLUDE IN SPRING MAGIC:

As always, please research any and all herbs, plants, and magical ingredients you use if you have children or pets.

*Seasonal spring flowers and plants to make use of in your magic this spring.

Allspice: for aiding in protection and prosperity magic, in workings for new business ventures, and for drawing in money, success, and luck.

Anise: can be used in purification and cleansing work, as well some protection magic.

Buttercup*: for love, friendship, and harmony.

Cinnamon: for cleansing, healing, psychic enhancement, prosperity, abundance, good fortune, luck, protection.

Coffee: for prosperity, love, fidelity, warding, malevolent works; to attract money, good luck, success in business, new jobs and career changes,

Daffodil*: for prosperity, renewal, luck, love, fertility, happiness, and rebirth.

Dogwood*: can be used in protective charms and spells; dogwood sap can be used in wishing magic.

Garlic: for cleansing, purification, protection; used to attract money and ward off theft.

Ginger: for love, money, success.

Lemon: for cleansing, purification, luck, friendship, and love

Magnolia*: for fidelity, loyalty, transformation, psychic development, rebirth, fertility, and abundance.

Periwinkle*: for money, prosperity, protection, and love [poisonous, toxic for some pets, use with caution, do not keep around pets or children, best not to consume - more info here (symptoms and identification) and here (list of animals for which periwinkle is toxic and further information)].

Rosemary: for protection, love, cleansing, purification, and healing.

Rue: for cleansing, healing, and love; can also be used to remove curses and hexes.

Sea Salt, Salt: for cleansing, purification, protection.

Tulip*: for love, prosperity, and protection.

Witch Hazel*: for protection, cleansing, purification, aid in divination, in work for healing a broken heart.

SPELLS & CHARMS

Cleansing:

As many practitioners use spring as a time to cleanse their spaces and welcome in change, positivity, prosperity, and good fortune, cleansing work, such as sweeps and washes, is essential magic for the season.

HAND WASH CLEANSING

To purify, sanctify, and get rid of old energy and negativity, and to attract protection, new opportunities, good fortune, happiness, and harmony.

What you'll need:

water

lemon juice or lemon essential oil

rosemary or rosemary essential oil

chamomile essential oil or chamomile flowers

lavender flowers or lavender essential oil

bowl or basin

What to do:

-Designate the area where you’ll perform this cleansing spell. Ideally, it should take place in a space that you feel comfortable and at peace – outdoors, in your bedroom, at an altar, anywhere you feel secure and in tune with yourself.

-Fill your bowl with water (whichever kind of water you prefer to use) and add lemon juice or lemon essential oil, rosemary leaves or rosemary essential oil, and chamomile flowers or chamomile essential oil. Why these ingredients? Lemon purifies, cleanses, and sanctifies while also attracting luck, friendship, and love; rosemary is often used in cleansing work and also boosts protection and healing; chamomile has long been used in ritual washes to bring purification and cleansing; and lavender is another cleansing ally that removes negative energy.

Other options for cleansing & purifying essential oils to use instead of these are:

-Bergamot – grounding & attracting good fortune -Cedar & Cedarwood – cleansing, removing negative energy -Frankincense – purification -Patchouli – spiritual awakening, peace-bringing -Ylang-Ylang – healing (especially emotional healing), cleansing

-Take a moment to close your eyes and set your intentions. You will use this water to symbolically wash away the old. Think about why you’re doing this. Are you washing away negative energy? Are you cleansing yourself in preparation for the new season and the new opportunities it may bring? Are you washing away bad luck in hopes to attract a turn of fortune? Set your intentions and sit with them for a moment, affirming them within yourself.

-Dip one hand into the bowl of water. Cupping water in that hand, hold the other hand over the bowl and pour the cupped water over the dry hand. While you do this, think on washing away whatever it is you wish to leave behind and welcoming in newness, positivity, and whatever goodness you seek.

-Now dip the opposite hand into the water and perform this same act on the other side, cupping water in your hand and pouring it over the other hand, letting the water wash down from your hand back into the bowl. Perform this step as many times as you like, alternating slowly between each hand. The action should be slow and meaningful, not hurried, and you should be thinking on all that you’re leaving behind with this symbolic washing of your hands.

-When you're finished, dry your hands (preferably using a white cloth). You can use the water left over to brush over doorways, windows, and sacred spaces, if you like.

CLEANSING WASH FOR AMULETS, DOORWAYS, MAGICAL TOOLS, & SACRED SPACES

To cleans one's home and space of negativity and old energy, and to attract prosperity, protection, blessings, and positivity.

What you'll need:

water (you can use any kind of water you prefer)

lemon juice

mugwort / st. john's plant (whole frond with leaves)*

bowl or basin

*you can use a mugwort infusion added to your water instead of using a frond of mugwort

What to do:

For washing doors, windows, etc.: -Mix water and lemon juice (it can be freshly squeezed or pre-bottled) in your bowl or basin. You can take a moment before, during, or after mixing the water and lemon juice to sit and think on the purpose of your wash - to cleans old energy, purify and sanctify the space or object, and to welcome in new opportunities, good energy, and good luck.

-Take your frond of mugwort and submerge or dip the leaves in the water.

-Use the mugwort frond to brush the doorframe, the door, the woodwork around windows, the windows themselves, and even the beams and/or rails on your porch if you have them.

-If you're using a mugwort infusion added to your water and lemon juice instead of using a brush of mugwort frond, you can use a cloth to wash with, preferably a white cloth to symbolize purity, cleansing, and newness.

For washing amulets & sacred spaces: -Small amulets, such as those worn or carried on one's person, can be gently washed with a small amount of the water, lemon, and mugwort wash, or, if you're using the mugwort frond method, you can flick the frond over the amulets to sprinkle them with the water and lemon juice mixture. -Amulets that hang on walls can be sprinkled or splashed with the mixture to cleans and purify them. -Altars and magical workspaces can be gently washed with this cleansing wash as well.

For washing magical tools: -This wash can be used on magical tools, especially divination tools, as mugwort is a valuable ally in the art of divination. Wash crystal balls, scrying mirrors, scrying bowls, tabletops on which you perform divinatory readings, any sortilege utensils, pendulums, etc. with this water, lemon juice, and mugwort blend to cleans old energy whilst enhancing psychic practice.

CLEANSING WASH FOR ITEMS & SURFACES

This cleansing wash is intended for things and places where lingering energy may have settled, such as items inherited from or having belonged to a now deceased person, items given you by an ex-lover or former friend, or items purchased second hand or from antique stores, yard sales, or estate sales. It can also be used on surfaces in rooms where a spirit, ex-lover, former friend, negative person, or enemy may have passed through or lingered.

What you'll need:

1 cup of warm water

1-2 tablespoons of vinegar or apple cider vinegar

1 teaspoon of salt

bowl, basin, or cup

cloth or rag

What to do:

-Add 1-2 tablespoons of vinegar/apple cider vinegar to 1 cup of warm water. Add 1 teaspoon of salt and stir.

-Using a rag or cloth, gently wash surfaces, areas, or items that you wish to clean. Be mindful of your items. Only wash items that wouldn't be damaged by water, vinegar, or salt. For a milder cleans use more water and less vinegar.

CLEANSING SWEEP

What you'll need:

salt (any kind of salt you like);

a broom (birch brooms add extra cleansing oomf, but you can use any broom)

a dustpan

Optional additives: Herbs and flowers are commonly used in floor sweeps to not only add to cleansing work but to also attract things like good luck, money, love, and blessings. Always be mindful if you have pets or children to never perform a sweep in an area they have access to, as many ingredients are not safe for them to ingest.

flowers and petals - burdock for cleansing and banishing negative energy; chamomile for cleansing and purification; daisy for cleansing and attracting good luck and positivity; lavender for cleansing, purification, and peace; roses for love, manifesting wishes, and luck.

herbs and plant allies - dried lemon peel/rind for cleansing, renewal, and purification; pine needles for cleansing, banishing and protection, and to attract money; rosemary for protection, cleansing, purification, and healing.

What to do:

-In an area where you wish to clear out negative energy, sprinkle salt (or your mixture of salt and any additives) on the floor. Make sure you sprinkle extra at thresholds and beneath windows or in front of fireplaces - boosting the banishing of negative energy at all entrance points of the space. To banish energies, sprinkle your salt/mixture from the back of the home/space toward the front; for houses with multiple levels you work back-to-front, top-to-bottom. To attract energies, sprinkle your salt/mixture from the front of the home/space to the back.

-While sprinkling and laying out your salt/mixture, you should think on or speak on your intension to rid that space. Be as specific as you need to be, let not one hint of negativity or malevolent energy or spirit linger in ta shadowy corner or a crack between floorboards.

-Some leave their salt to sit and work for a few hours, a whole day, some overnight. You can do that if you like. Others sweep it up immediately, while still thinking on or stating their intentions to banish energy and clean the space. Whatever way you put your salt out, sweep it in the same manner (back to front of the home or front to back).

-Dispose of the salt/mixture after sweeping it up. You can toss it off your property or put it in the trash bin, but make sure you don't keep it in the house.

SMOKE CLEANSING

These dried herbs can all be burned and smoke either in the form of a bundle or loose in a firesafe pot, cauldron, bowl, or vessel. Cast iron is always good. Line the bottom of the vessel with sand (to absorb heat) and place a disc of charcoal on the sand. Burn the herbs on top of the charcoal disc.

Eucalyptus - Eucalyptus bundles are burned to purify spaces, especially those in which healing work is to be performed. It's also said to be ideal for cleansing homes of those who are struggling with their mental health. Pine Needles - Burn pine needles and let the smoke banish negative energy and banish evil eye and any curse or hex work that's been sent your way, as well as clean and sanctify sacred spaces. Rosemary - Burn a bundle of dried rosemary. The smoke will rid the space of negativity and ward off negative or harmful energy. It also grants protection to that space and those within it. Thyme - Thyme can be burned as a dried bundle or in incense form to provide cleansing, purification, psychic enhancement, and healing.

Burning these incenses is said to draw money to you.

Wallet Charms to Attract Money

BERGAMOT: Leaves of orange bergamot should be kept in wallets and purses to attract money and financial luck.

CHAMOMILE: Keeping a chamomile flower in your wallet or purse is said to bring in more money.

FLAX SEEDS: Place a few flax seeds in your pocket, wallet, or purse along with a few coins. This should be repeated daily to bring the money your way. You can also keep flax seed in your shoes to ward off poverty.

JASMINE: Carrying Jasmine in your wallet or purse to draw in money.

PERIWINKLE: Keeping a periwinkle flower in your wallet or purse will attract money your way. *WARNING: Varieties of periwinkle can be poisonous and periwinkle is toxic to some animals. Do not keep periwinkle flowers around pets or children and always handle with caution. SASSAFRAS: Kept in the purse or wallet to draw money your way.

Pomegranate Branch Charm for the Home

It's said that keeping a pomegranate branch will help one attract money their way and can also aid in uncovering "hidden" or "lost" money. You can mount a pomegranate branch in your house to keep the money close to home.

Wheat Charm for the Home

Keeping sheaves of wheat in the home (either dried and hanging, in a vase, or braided) is believed to attract money, aid in business ventures, and bring prosperity and fruitfulness.

Arrowroot Powder for Business Success & Money Luck

Where I'm from, people powder their feet with arrowroot powder or poot arrowroot powder in their shoes when they're going to business meetings, pitching a new business idea, or going gambling. It's believed to bring luck with money and success in business ventures.

the 10 of Diamonds for Attracting Money

There are various methods of using the 10 of Diamonds playing card to attract money your way.

The simplest way is to carry the 10 of Diamonds card in your wallet, purse, or pocket.

Another method common in the Southeastern US and Southern Appalachia is to write your name horizontally across the 10 of Diamonds three times. Where I'm from, we then turn it clockwise and write your name again, three times. The lines of names from the first three and the lines of names from the second three should crisscross over each other, as demonstrated below. Another variation includes you writing your date of birth within the squares formed between the written names (where the 'x' marks are on the rightmost image below).

You then keep this as a charm to attract money. Put it in your wallet or add it to a satchet spell for money or in a money jar spell.

Money Jar

There are lots of ways of doing jar spells and lots of ways of doing money jar spells. Where I'm from in the Southeastern US, we tend to use herbs, flowers, and sweet things like honey, molasses, or syrup because the sweetness is believed to attract good things and the stickiness is believed to make the money and goodness stick to you. So, I'm going to write an easily customizable version of the variation I'm most familiar with. You can do this in three versions - the dry version, the wet, and the sticky version. It's up to you.

What you'll need:

Herbs and flowers that attract money, such as: alfalfa, allspice, arrowroot, bay leaves, basil, cinnamon, clover, garlic (cloves or dried for the dry version, cloves or minced for the wet version), ginger (for dry version, root or powdered), ginseng (for dry version, root or powdered), honeysuckle, nutmeg, thyme.

(dry version) sugar

(wet version) whiskey or bourbon

(sticky version) honey, molasses, or syrup

coins

a jar with a lid

a pen or marker (optional)

a 10 of hearts playing card with or without your name written on it (optional)

candle wax (to seal the jar)

What to do:

-Put a layer of coins in the bottom of the jar, preferably pennies, but you can use any coin.

-Next, place your selection of herbs and flowers in the jar. If you're using bay leaves, you can use a pen or marker to write your money wishes on the bay leaf before putting it in the jar.

-You can include your playing card now if you're using the playing card.

-For the dry version, fill the jar with sugar.

-For the wet version, fill the jar with whiskey.

-For the sticky version, fill the jar with your honey, molasses, or syrup.

-Seal your jar with the candle wax. You do this by lighting a candle and dripping the wax all around the jar lid. You can use white wax, or you can use a particular color of candle if you associate a certain color with money, such as green for wealth or gold/yellow for prosperity. After you've sealed the lid, you can burn the rest of the candle down if there's any left, either on top of the jar or beside the jar.

-Keep your money jar in a place you'll see it every day or in a place where you work, like in your office. If you do ever need or wish to dispose of your money jar, you can do so by burying the jar whole or throwing it away whole.

Apple Spell for Good Luck, Attracting Fortune, & Prosperity

This is a spring variation of the same spell featured in my Apple Magic piece.

What you’ll need:

an apple, preferably green or golden

red clover

allspice

cinnamon

What to do:

-Take your apple and cut it in half, but instead of cutting it from top to bottom, turn the apple on its side and cut it down the middle that way.

-You should now see holes in the middle with the apple seeds inside. This usually forms the shape of a five-pointed star. As apples and stars are both a symbol of good luck, this is the perfect base to build our spell on.

-Next, press the red clover, allspice, and cinnamon into the apple around the star. You should do this with both halves of the apple.

-Leave the apple to sit on a windowsill or porch rail to soak up the sun’s light for the rest of the day. If you like, you can bury the apple at sundown or the next morning as a means of “discarding” your spell. You can also simply throw the apple away. Remember, you’ve already done the work, these are just what’s left of the tools you used in doing so.

TAROT ALLIES FOR MONEY & BUSINESS WORK

Many practitioners of witchcraft like to utilize tarot cards in their spells or as visual manifestation tools. These tarot cards are ideal for incorporating in either spellwork for money or success in business, or as those visual manifestation tools to keep on your person or around you.

the Magician: For those starting a new business venture or trying to start their own business, the Magician is a powerful tarot ally. He has all the tools he needs before him, just as you do. Emulate the Magician's ability to summon new ideas and bring his vision to life.

the Sun: Perfect for those hoping to find a new job or get a promotion. The Sun is all about growth, prosperity, and expanding one's horizons.

Ace of Pentacles: This card is all about raking in the money. Let the money come your way and put the Ace of Pentacles to use in your spellwork to help ensure so. It can also be used when looking for a raise, a change of career, or to start a new business.

Nine of Pentacles: If business and success are your main focus right now, the Nine of Pentacles is the helper you need. Success, monetary gain, growth, and recognition are the central themes with this card.

The weather in the wild west Highlands of Scotland is capricious, and very often changes rapidly. So Algy was not altogether surprised when a dreary grey day was followed by one of glorious sunshine, and he was delighted to see that at last the February sun was strong enough to persuade the crocuses to open their flowers and smile at him.

Although it did not get as cold around Algy's home as it did in many of the places where his friends lived, the winter was nevertheless horribly long and dreary… and decidedly limiting… and like many other folk, Algy was now longing for warmer days when he would be able to get out and about adventuring again.

But despite the sunshine, the temperature was still very low, and the weather unreliable, so Algy satisfied himself for the moment by selecting a particularly sunny spot beside some of the beautiful, glowing crocuses, and indulging in some light and entertaining reading, which he dedicates especially to those of his friends who keep cats 🐈😀

Spring Meadow

I have not been able to get soft Lucien out of my head all morning so heres a super fluffy fic about our boy being absolutely in love with you.

Lucien deserves the absolute world, boy has been through enough.

Lucien never regretted his decision to come to the spring court. The cruelty of the Autumn court gave way to something sweeter. Autumn always reminded him of death. He saw it in the trees that constantly shed their leaves, in the terror of everyone in the court. Worst of all, he saw it in his brothers. Fear seemed to permeate the air wherever you went and his family wore it the most. Cloaked in gripping fear of their own father. When he arrived in spring, it was like he could breathe for the first time in his life. Flowers bloomed and birds sang cheerful songs. The lords and ladies of the court would smile at each other as they passed. Spring reminded him that he wanted to be alive. 

Of course, he also had you. He had never intended to fall in love. Heart still in tatters over Jesminda, love was the last thing on his mind. But there you were. One of the ladies of Tamlins court. He found you in the meadow he frequently hid away in. Weaving flowers into a makeshift crown, basking in the first few hours of sunlight as it crested the horizon. The willow wisps seemed to sing a special song just for you. 

He can still feel the shock run through him, blinking hard as if he might wake up from a dream. Lucien decided that if it was a dream, he would happily never wake up. You startled as he cleared his throat. Hands pausing your work as he introduced himself. He swore he felt his heart stop dead when you smiled at him, giving him your name. 

That’s when it all started. It wasn’t an all consuming fire but a slow ember that he nursed into something roaring. You were patient with him as he figured out how to let his guard down. A comforting shoulder when days got too heavy for him to get out of bed. Those were days you would curl up next to him, hands deftly braiding his hair or reading him one of your favorite books. Those were the days that Lucien knew he was falling in love with you. 

Today was one of those days. You managed to pull him out of bed and the two of you stood in the kitchen. Flour streaked across your face as you kneaded the dough ball in front of you. Giving it a small smack, you put it in the bowl next to you and draped a wet towel over it. 

“There, I have an hour before I can bake it.” You washed off your hands and walked over to where Lucien sat on a stool at the counter. You patted his thighs and he parted them enough for you to squeeze yourself between them. With care, you wrapped your arms around his neck and gave him a peck on the cheek. “What would you like to do today, Lu?” He wanted nothing more than to just crawl back into bed. Hold you in his arms until his thoughts could do anything but swirl around angrily in his head. But you had told him you wanted to get out of the house today so he instead said. 

“What about a picnic in the meadow?” He suggested. He wished he could bottle that look in your eyes, pure wonder and excitement. 

“Absolutely. Once the bread is done I’ll make us sandwiches. Oh and I’ll cut up some of that fruit from last night.” You chirped. He gave you another tight squeeze as you started gathering all the things you needed to bring. Lucien sat and stared at you. His heart squeezing in the best way possible. He pushed himself off the stool and went to your side, helping you pull out the fruit sent from the summer court. You instructed him on how to peel and chop the chosen fruit. His rough chunks were almost laughable in comparison to the shapes you cut into the fruit. He never understood how you made the various patterns you were able to cut them into, deftly cutting hearts and flowers. He helped you string them onto wooden skewers and squeezed the lemon juice on them so they wouldn’t brown, a trick you had taught him the last time you went on a picnic. You wrapped them up in a small towel and he went to grab your wicker basket from your room. 

Even your room made him smile. Organized chaos as you called it. Flowers covered as many surfaces as they could. You had used your powers to make honeysuckle creep up the walls, covering the wall by the window and swirling up to the ceiling. The white blooms fill the room with their sweet scent. He used to complain about the pollen dropping over everything but he learned to appreciate it over time. He even went as far as cleaning it up on days you were too busy to do it yourself. You always thanked him by peppering his face with small kisses when he did. 

He quickly located the basket he had been sent to find. He also grabbed one of your favorite blankets and the book you had been slowly reading to him. Both of you could have easily finished it on your own by now but he loved listening to your voice as you read it out loud, your voice wrapping around the words brought the story to life. 

When he walked back into the kitchen, you were bent towards the oven, pushing in the bread pan. Standing back up, you adjusted the top to your flowy sundress and untied the now dirty apron from your waist. You smiled at him as he held up the basket like it was a trophy. He was rewarded by the peel of your laughter. He wanted to wrap himself in the sound so he did just that, practically sprinting across the kitchen to embrace you. Hugging you so tightly he lifted you off the ground. He was rewarded with another string of giggles and when he sat you back on your feet your cheeks had a glowing blush to them. You stretched up onto your tiptoes and kissed him passionately. 

He let out a surprised noise as your teeth found his lower lip. You smiled into the kiss as he swept you off your feet, placing you on the kitchen counter so he wouldn’t have to bend down. Your hands found their way to his hair and the two of you got lost in each other. Eventually, you both need to pull away for air. Your chest was heaving as you tried to catch your breath and he tried to ignore the way your tongue swept over your lips before he was tempted to forgo the picnic and drag you to bed for other reasons. 

He joined you, pulling himself up onto the counter. So close to you his thighs were pressed against yours. You picked up his hand and started drawing random patterns and swirls. The conversation flowed easily out of the two of you while you were waiting for the bread to finish baking. Its smell filled the room and made his stomach grumble. Luckily, before he could even think of making a joke about his stomach eating itself, the timer you had set dinged loudly. You grabbed a dish towel and pulled the perfect loaf from the oven. After letting it cool for a few minutes, you started assembling the sandwiches, cutting them into perfect triangles. Wrapping them in their own towel and adding them to the basket. You looked up at him, “All ready to go!” 

You all but pulled him to the meadow, a childlike sort of excitement as you babbled on about the newest gossip in the court. He didn’t really follow your words too much, too many names he didn’t recognize, but he held to every word you uttered. Savoring the sound of your voice. 

When you finally decided on a spot, he laid out the blanket on the dew covered grass. You sat crossed legged in the middle and started unpacking the basket. 

After the food was eaten, you laid down, arms holding your top half off the ground. Lucien placed his head on your thighs using you as his personal pillow and handed you the book before you could even reach for it. That action earned him a kiss to his forehead, your hair draping around him as you leaned down. You flipped to the page you had left off on the night before. 

Sitting out in this field, your free hand playing absentmindedly with his hair. Lucien knew that this was true happiness. Happiness that he had never felt before meeting you. Happiness he was terrified of losing but allowed himself to feel anyways. He would go to the ends of the earth to protect you and he knows you would do the same for him. His emotions suddenly welled up inside of his chest and he lifted his head off your lap. Your reading stopped as you went to ask him what was wrong, reading the tears in his eyes as something other than pure joy. He spoke before you could. 

“Can we stay like this forever.” He said, leaning closer into you. You kissed him, soft and gentle. 

“Of course my love.” You cuddled tighter to his side and pulled him into a deep kiss. He rolled you on top of him, and you pulled away to say, “We can stay like this for as long as you want.”

s7 episode 16 “chimera” thoughts

i may have missed easter by a few days, but!!! here i am, watching the episode that says it takes place “over the easter holiday”

how is everyone doing?? honestly, i’m really excited to get to the next episode. but the last 2 have been super good, so hopefully we’re on a winning streak. 

look, i can recognize patterns, though- the streaks never last too long on this show. god love it. bless it, even. but it’s just the way it works. that being SAID, i have heard a few things about the next episode, and i am SO excited to see what happens.

so! mulder is hunting for a creature!! i hope there is scully time, too, but maybe she’s busy with her family doing easter stuff. 

post-episode thoughts: not a bad episode at all! it had some VERY cute moments, and some of the most blatantly wrong plot predictions i have ever made, which is always fun to read back, LMAO. screw that adderly guy for real though. and shoutout to mulder's vague definition of "significant other" for getting me to make a squealing noise akin to a baby animal in distress.

it’s easter sunday in vermont. and this brunch looks crazy. michelle found some eggs, and also the easter bunny is here #yassss! this looks so expensive. although, i’m scared of people in holiday costumes after the killer santa episode, but still. i can appreciate the effort that went into this. the kids will remember this forever, says one lady, later revealed to be named ellen, to the host of easter brunch. “i hope there are some things they won’t remember” says the host (martha) with a pointed look at a new woman approaching… what is their tea…?

ohhh, this woman is named jenny. and ellen tells martha to be nice- but jenny does NOT say hello to her, LMAO

michelle is hunting for more eggs, yay, i love an egg hunt!! but i’m scared she’ll find some sort of beast or ghoul. she’s wandering into a wooded area… careful, queen…. she hears some birds and finds a raven. and it flies at her!!! when the bird scares her and she runs, jenny is right behind her!!! LEAVE MICHELLE ALONE??

the poor girl drops all her eggs and runs away :( why is this GROWN WOMAN chasing a child into the woods?!

at night, martha says it took two hours to put michelle to bed because she was so scared!!! and while martha personally didn’t see a bird, whatever michelle saw spooked her. she wants to be with her dad. who cannot come home early. 

the window is open and the curtains are blowing. ellen shuts them. but a bird got in the house!!! and it’s cawing!

and then… the window or a mirror smashes or something?? it’s hard to tell. and someone is IN THE HOUSE. GIRL. IS IT JENNY???????

oooooo….. now i wanna know why jenny and martha have such a fight going on!!

oh, scully is here too!!! bringing some coffee. it’s 8:42 pm and they’re looking for… someone. he is sure she will come.

LMAOOOO “well, i hope you realize there’s no evidence whatsoever that this mystery woman of yours has even committed a crime… although her wardrobe comes close” <- i’m howwwwwling. get her, scully!!!!

oh, i think she actually has tea, not coffee in her cup :,) as she lounges here. mulder explains that 6 people were seen with this mysterious individual at the strip club and then never seen again. he thinks she might be a serial killer (a female one! very rare!), AND twice police have raided the club to arrest her. 

but scully points out that twice the police turned up empty handed. so, hmm.

NOOOOO, scully is talking about how depressing this whole thing is when he gets a phone call and just… GETS UP AND LEAVES. WHERE IS HE GOING?!?? leaving her in this strange and dirty room with a half-eaten sandwich and a bunch of photos of the suspect!!!

well, it was skinner who summoned him, so it must be pretty important, and i guess i can forgive him for ditching her. skinner has a photo of martha on his desk. why doesn’t he want scully here to accompany him????

martha disappeared two weeks ago, and no one has seen her since. mulder points out that he is already on a case, and skinner replies, no, you’re on a stakeout, and scully can handle it.

(suspicious mulder look) “why, what did i do?” <- awww, he thinks he’s in troubleeee. makes you wonder how many times he has gotten put on weird sounding assignments as skinner punishment. (obviously the stuff with kersh doesn’t count- that man was torturing them both!)

LMAOOO, skinner says it may play to his “strengths as an investigator” and then asks about the significance of ravens in mythology. when the boss requests that you infodump… you comply.

michelle claims she was attacked by a raven earlier that day and then heard one again before her mother disappeared. “no really, what did i do?” mulder asks again <- LMAOOOO. punishment of birds be upon ye

skinner says it’s the only lead that hasn’t been explored! and also, martha’s father is a federal judge- it has been made clear that finding her is to be skinner’s top priority. so off you go, raven boy.

i’m always so sad when our agents get separated. 

mulder has arrived to vermont to meet a sheriff named phil adderly. he’s using a newspaper as an umbrella. king!! that seems really ineffective and like it will make a soggy mess, but he has to protect that perfect hair. mulder seems apprehensive about if he can be any help to the case. 

so adderly’s wife is ellen, who we saw at the brunch before the disappearance, and she is martha’s best friend- and also the one who told her to be nice to jenny. martha is admired in the community. adderly assures mulder that martha’s husband howard has nothing to do with this. suspicious!

mulder is staring at howard and michelle. “what do you know about a raven?”, he asks adderly. mulder says it won’t be necessary to talk to michelle. i wonder why…. does he think he’ll be in and out that fast? or does he just not wanna talk to a traumatized child today?

oooo, but he does find some weird marks in the house. “how many talons would you say a raven had?”, he asks. the sheriff cannot have expected to be asked that question upon waking up in the morning, LMAOOO. mulder realizes the error of his ways and quickly throws in a “never mind”

and also, there was a mirror that was broken at the scene. so keep that in mind.

howard comes in, meeting mulder and admitting he wonders if this whole thing is a waste of his time- the police have been coming and going, which is not great for crime scene investigation. is howard a suspect? hmm… 

and he says he found something. hands it to mulder to investigate. “uh, birth control pills?” <- that’s really funny out of context.

make mulder react to uncomfortable family secrets more often. i always enjoy it.

it’s not a laughing matter for howard, though, who says he thinks martha was having an affair. well, that’s a pretty big jump…

howard is telling mulder about his vasectomy and he’s just nodding along. listening. ohhhh, poor king… dealing with this…. separated from his scully and listening to a random guy talk about his marital problems.

listen, i’m sticking up for martha here, though: i have read FAR too many stories of people managing to have children after a vasectomy to EVER feel comfortable believing that a simple surgery can take care of all risk. HORROR stories. mostly on reddit. things that will send a shiver down your spine. team martha.

and then howard hands mulder a key, saying he found it in martha’s favorite coat, and he doesn’t know where it goes to. nah, howard is def sleeping with jenny, and martha’s mysterious disappearance is to cover up what’s going on there. i’m onto your tricks, howard. you may fool the sheriff, but you won’t fool me.

howard thinks that maybe martha ran away with this affair partner she must have, and that is why they haven’t found her. ummm… if she wanted to leave, she could do that without breaking the mirror and screaming and faking evidence?? unless she wanted to make it look like a kidnapping, i guess. howard seems to be jumping to a lot of conclusions and i do not trust him.

ellen is sticking missing posters on cars as she pushes the baby in a stroller. and she hears a raven…. when jenny approaches!!! “cute kid”, she says.

ellen asks jenny if she wants some posters to put up on her side of town, which… yeah… doesn’t sound great, even if she just really innocently meant they live in opposite geographical areas. she then apologizes for how that sounded. “no, it just naturally comes out that way when you think you’re better than everyone”, jenny spits back. DAMN. 

and then she stalks away. 

ellen sees this HORRIBLE ZOMBIE IN THE CAR WINDOW??? and then the glass SHATTERS

what is jenny doing….?

adderly is fully on board with the “martha was having an affair” theory and tells mulder as much.

“according to your audubon book here, a raven has four talons”, says mulder. STOP!!! again, that is so funny out of context. adderly wants to know if martha was hurt and he’s like no, let’s have some bird facts.

now he’s going into what ravens and broken mirrors mean in a spiritual sense like it’s the most natural thing in the world- it’s true, i love this man!

ellen comes home with the daughter. and also, they’re letting mulder stay in their house. has that ever happened before?? staying with a family instead of booking a hotel? and he agrees to it. to be fair to him, though, they didn’t offer much of a choice

so now he’s sleeping in the guest room, i guess. dinner is fancy as hell and ellen is like “oh this is typical for us :)” <- she’s trying to flex on him

his phone rings! is it scully? OHHHH IT IS, AND SHE WANTS TO GO HOOOOME :( the furnace broke in that weird like stakeout room and she’s cold!!! and she doesn’t want to think about the things she’s seen staking out a strip club!!!

LMAOOO “hey scully, tough it out; whatever doesn’t kill you makes you stronger, right? (turning to ellen who is serving him dinner) no, no, no, no, no capers, thank you” “i’m sorry, what?” “i said ‘what… a crazy caper’, i’ll talk to you later, and keep warm, bye”

AWWWWW, POOR SCULLY :( LOOK AT HER POUTY FACE, OHHHHH MY GOOOOOOOD I’M GOING TO YELL!!!! she is COLD, damnit!!! get her a blanket!!!

look at this fancy new england boy mulder putting his napkin in his lap as they eat this… meat creation. what a gentleman.

back at howard and michelle’s place, michelle won’t eat dinner because mommy didn’t make it. and dad offers to get hamburgers instead. but she is terrified and says “it’s back”. she is so scared!!!! someone help her!!! the bird is right at the window cawing!!

he leaves to go scare it off, but i’m scared he’s not coming back. there are soooo many birds in the yard…. eating something….. A HAND??? HELLLLL NO. 

mulder is on the scene. the ravens were eating martha. so was she in the garden the whole time? how did they not notice her there?!

adderly is refusing to arrest howard, saying he didn’t do it, even if the body was buried in his backyard and all signs point to him. he didn’t do it. which makes me think adderly might be covering up for howard. ellen comes and starts crying seeing her friend's body. and she confesses to seeing the beast earlier. 

she thinks the claw marks on martha’s face could have been from the creature. mulder believes her. adderly basically telling him to stfu about the spirits. mulder thinks someone summoned this creature, and asks if martha had any enemies. 

they go to talk to jenny, who viciously denies the claim. OHHHH, she’s shading adderly right there in front of mulder… something about a town secret. but she fesses up to hating martha and how perfect she thought she was, and she heard that she was stepping out on her husband, so look into THAT.

so she has a criminal record. adderly says he thinks she didn’t do it- he sure has a lot of opinions on this case- but why did she lie about her alibi, mulder asks. “i got that vibe pretty clear” <- OHHHH!! is adderly cheating on ellen with jenny?!? this is so messed up

LMAOOOOOO, SCULLY CALLS: “mulder, when you find me dead, my desiccated corpse propped up, staring lifelessly through the telescope at drunken frat boys peeing and vomiting into the gutter, just know that my last thoughts were of you… and how i’d like to kill you” <- tell him how you FEEL, sister!!!

she sounds like she has a cold :( poor thing!!!

he’s talking about how there’s the same seedy underbelly in this fancy vermont town as there is in that strip club in DC.

she keeps seeing a van with writing about jesus on it, and this distracts her from hearing mulder’s autopsy request. HIS EYE ROLL, LMAOOOO... these two deserve each other.

ravens!! at the adderly house!!!! ellen is vacuuming. finds that key from martha's pocket stuck in her vacuum thingy!! and there is lots of cawing!!!

the raven got in the room with the baby!!! and then she sees the scary face again in the mirror and it shatters!!! AUGH, it gave me the CREEPS! she takes the baby and runs, hiding in a closet from the scary person who seems to be right outside. and then her husband bursts open the closet door and she’s sobbing. so is HE the beast...?

mulder will investigate. he looks so handsome. sits down to ask her what happened. adderly glares at her when she says "it" chased her. and then tells mulder to stop encouraging this. he thinks she broke the mirrors. but! mulder finds the key that was on the ground!

mulder sits next to ellen and her very large baby and asks about the key. she hasn’t seen it before that morning. adderly takes the key to figure out where it goes to. so if she found it and then was attacked….? and then ellen found one….  

the question is who will find the third copy of the key and be attacked, if the pattern is to be followed. and also, where is adderly going as he leaves ellen in bed at night?

OH, off to see jenny? who lives at house 6? she hugs him and he says he can’t do this anymore. and then they’re kissing. oh. okay. there are mirrors on her ceiling as they hook up. 

ellen is making mulder breakfast. and he ironed his shirt! saying it relaxes her to do housework. is she hitting on him or just very nice? and adderly is, of course, not here. 

OH, she is hitting on him, i do believe. “do you have a significant other?” “um, not in the widely understood definition of that term” <- QPR MSR WRITES ITSELF 🥰

(gosh, my heart is still melting from this...... i need to go sit down. he doesn't say NO. just "not in the way you normally would think to use that word" OHHHHHH... i love that MSR blurs all boundaries of romantic vs platonic- it is just Love all the way down)

she's assuring him the right woman will come along and change all that, and that he shouldn’t miss out on home and family life, and he nods… apprehensively… when in walks adderly, who claims he was doing paperwork. at night. and then tells mulder that they’re short handed, got a deputy out, and yes, it lasted all night.

OHHH, this is juicy…. mulder shares the news that martha was 4 weeks pregnant when she died. he asks who the father might be while taking a bite of bacon. “just say what’s on your mind, agent” <-he KNOWS mulder is onto his ass...

mulder wants the key back!!! he says it is evidence!!! see, here i was thinking it was a “a key shows up before the raven monster eats you” thing, but maybe it was just one key to jenny’s place all along. 

mulder is mad as fuck at this adderly guy, who runs off to the shower, leaving mulder the very awkward situation of “do i tell this woman her husband is cheating on her?”

jenny is buttoning her clothes back up, calling a child, saying mommy had to work a double shift and she’ll be home real soon. when she hears the ravens!! they’re fighting outside her place. and then all her mirrors on the roof shatter!!! and the demon thing grabs her!!! swipes her with it’s terrible claws!!!!

mulder is here at the crime scene. is adderly responsible for this demon??? adderly was having an affair with jenny AND martha? and they knew about each other!!! but ellen doesn’t. “but even if she did, she’d find a way to rationalize it” <- OH!!!! what a horrible thing to say about the person you are married to

he claims ellen baby trapped him so he couldn’t get a divorce, and i think this guy is just a sleaze of the highest order. also, mulder needs to shave, but… i don’t hate it.

oh, NOW adderly wants to hear about the ravens and the broken mirrors. HE THINKS HE MIGHT BE THE REASON THEY ARE HERE AND NOT EVEN KNOW! that is actually a very interesting concept

back at the house, adderly calls, saying he needs to talk to ellen, and mulder is on his way over to discuss whatever it is that is going on. but where is she??? she's just getting home, saying the baby needs a nap.

so she didn’t hear the phone……

creepy music plays as she puts the baby to bed. OH SHIT!!! SHE HAS A STAB MARK ON HER NECK!!! FROM WHERE JENNY GOT THE DEMON THING WITH GLASS!!!!!!

not gonna lie that plot twist got me. gaaaaaaaaag!

ellen is getting in the tub. is mulder still on his way over? oh! she didn't know the wound was in her neck!!! but she gets flashbacks of being stabbed as the scary wild beast???

NOOOO, mulder comes home while she’s getting in the tub. oh god. his phone rings. it’s scully. she solved the stakeout mystery!!! the mystery blond is a guy named mark who is taking the 6 missing people to a halfway house! “a wolf in sheep’s clothing. or i guess in this case, a sheep in wolf’s clothing” <- a happy ending for all involved. except for mulder. who is stuck here while this lady who was hitting on him a few hours ago is in the bathtub.

scully may now shower for 8 or 9 hours and sleep until spring- her words <3 i am very happy for her

but this makes mulder realize things…. 

he knocks on the door of the bathroom. ellen asks him to go away. he tells her that jenny is dead and her husband is in custody- but he doesn’t think adderly did it. he’s asking her where she went that morning. she says it can’t be her. 

ohhhh, he thinks that if she can’t face her other side, that would explain the mirrors being shattered… 

she’s crying. if she comes out, everything she thought she had is over. and her eyes are all black. he’s gonna get attacked!!

aaaand sure enough, she comes out swinging at him in full demon mode, slashing the mirror with her talons. dunking him underwater and drowning him!!!! but then she’s gone??? bro is very wet, fully clothed in the tub. 

oh. she’s in the corner panting and shivering. 

at a psychiatric hospital, mulder is sitting with ellen, then gets up and leaves. he comes out to see adderly. allegedly, she has a split personality. maybe ellen’s changes were far more extreme than the typical case. and mulder thinks she had to rationalize adderly’s cheating somehow- she was trying to protect her family.

ohhhh. that makes her words to mulder about family being a refuge all the more terrifying.

she sees a raven outside the hospital and approaches it, placing her hands on the windows.

the end

woaaaaah. 

okay, well that plot twist got me, LMAO. i didn’t see it coming even if it seems obvious in hindsight. ellen, i was rooting for you!!! we were all rooting for you!!! martha, i defended you!

adderly is evil. 

not a bad episode! it’s not an instant classic for me or anything- hard to get that when the agents aren't together- but not a bad one at all. the drama of people who are well off is always gonna be interesting to me. rich people problems and such!

interesting to get scully as comedic relief!!! this has been wildly underused in this show, but we should get that more often, because it does work well <3 poor thing!!! she was so cold!!! he just left her!!! i was so mad at first, until we learned it was because skinner told him he had to!!!

their little stakeout was so funny, too. makes you realize that they must have so many boring cases like that we simply do not get to see in between all of the exciting ones we watch. it makes you think about long hours in a small room, nothing but hot tea and each other's company, conversation absentmindedly treading into vulnerability... swapping stories of high school classes, bad dates, favorite books... there are fic ideas everywhere for those with the eyes to see them.

oh, mulder. you can tell this man desperately wants to have some sort of peaceful life, but then this sort of thing happens to both of our agents and it’s like, well... maybe domesticity is just another front for evil. 

if you need me from now until eternity, i will be thinking about his unconventionally significant other <3

Rosemary Drop Biscuits

Every year, I put together a spread for each of the equinoxes and solstices. This is the first recipe in a new series for this year's Spring Equinox. My focuses for the meal are growth, prosperity, peace, happiness, and celebration. You’ll see that reflected in all of these recipes.

I’m publishing this recipe first, because I’ll be making it first. Anytime I make a big meal, I like to do my baking ahead of time to save space and ensure it’s done at the same time as the meal. But also, I find it’s a great opportunity to prime the kitchen for cooking in quantity. The goal is to cleanse and prepare the area without scouring the energy, something I use rosemary for frequently in a variety of ways.

This recipe is ultra-simple and comes together within half an hour. I suggest making it right before you cook the rest of your meal, but you can make it earlier in the day or even the day before.

Ingredients:

2 c All-Purpose Flour

1 T Baking Powder

1 t Salt

1 T Dried Rosemary

1/2 c Butter, cold

3/4 to 1 c Milk

2 T Butter, melted (optional)

Instructions:

Preheat the over to 450 degrees F.

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, and rosemary.

Cut in the cold butter.

Add the milk slowly until just combined and the batter is thick and lumpy.

Drop about a quarter cup of batter at a time onto a prepared baking sheet.

Bake for 18 to 22 minutes or until golden.

Optionally, brush the warm biscuits with melted butter.

Recipe Notes:

There are a few methods to cut in the butter. You can grate it into the bowl, use a fork, or use a pastry cutter to do so. Be sure that the butter is very cold for this step. This is what gives the biscuits their flaky, buttery texture once baked.

These biscuits will keep for a few days in an air-tight container. They make excellent companions to leftover gravy!

Magic Notes:

Rosemary is one of those swiss army knife ingredients to me. It has a place in so many recipes and spells, and with good reason. Here, I’m leveraging the cleansing aspect for my Spring Equinox spread. I plan on making these biscuits first to prepare the kitchen for cooking the rest of the meal. This cleanses the air and oven of any lingering energy from other workings, leaving behind a relatively clean slate for me to work with.

I also like to make rosemary-based breads or rolls whenever my space needs a refresh. It’s a gentle cleanser that won’t scour away the cast-iron-like seasoning of the space. Rather, it sweeps away the excess and leaves the kitchen (and adjoining rooms) feeling light and fresh. Some cleansing rituals can be irritating to resident spirits; in my experience, this particular recipe is generally spirit-friendly…

…Especially if you plan on offering one to the spirits! These biscuits make excellent altar offerings. As mentioned above, I’ll be making these first for my spread. Part of that ritual is offering the first biscuit on my spirit work altar for my allies to enjoy. Invite them into the space to partake, and offer space in the kitchen while you cook the rest of the meal.

Consider the properties of the humble biscuit. Thick, flaky, absorbent. In a meal, they soak up rogue gravy and are slathered with butter and other rich deliciousness on the plate. I try to have a biscuit or roll in any large spread, because there’s always energy lost at the table. These biscuits serve the purpose of soaking up anything that escapes from other dishes so that the person enjoying the meal doesn’t miss out on any of the energy on offer.

After you make your biscuits, take time to clean your kitchen surfaces. Wipe away any rogue flour, sweep the floors, and give everything at least a quick once-over. Then, you’ll be ready to work on the rest of your meal — or go about your day, depending on when you make these.

The bright, cold, frosty weather, which in most years visited the wild west Highlands of Scotland for a short period in February, continued to render Algy's home environment a great deal less wild than usual. But it was also very chilly, and Algy found that despite the increased light, the crocuses in his assistants' garden were feeling reluctant to open their jewel-like flowers.

Resting briefly on the frosty grass, Algy tried to coax them a wee bit, but despite his flattery the lovely "stars of earth" remained firmly closed for the time being, complaining that it was altogether too cold for flowering just now:

Spake full well, in language quaint and olden, One who dwelleth by the castled Rhine, When he called the flowers, so blue and golden, Stars, that in earth's firmament do shine. Stars they are, wherein we read our history, As astrologers and seers of eld; Yet not wrapped about with awful mystery, Like the burning stars, which they beheld. Wondrous truths, and manifold as wondrous, God hath written in those stars above; But not less in the bright flowerets under us Stands the revelation of his love.
