I think I'm in the minority in loving Star Trek: Beyond as by far the best of the three AOS movies, but it clearly had the best characterization and most character growth, particularly in the spirit of TOS.
My favorite line from Beyond, though, was in the second trailer, and apparently got cut at some point, probably because someone thought it was a bit dark for a "hero" movie.
Movie dialogue taken from Paramount+:
Uhura: If he [Jim Kirk] made it off that ship, he will come for us.
Krall: I am counting on it.
But that same scene in the second trailer?
That is a hell of a statement, particularly from a senior officer of the flagship of an organization founded on peace-keeping and scientific exploration.
These aren't the well-intentioned but cocky children we saw in the first two movies.
These aren't carbon-copies of the Original Series characters.
These aren't perfect heroes.
And I love that, for entirely different reasons than I love TOS.

what's song 113? (i am shaking your hand in Very Long WIP playlists)
Very Long WIP Playlists is an esteemed club for those of us who spend more time daydreaming than actually writing 🫡
Song 113 is Hallucinogenics by Matt Maeson!! This one’s here for the certified Depressed at a Party vibe, which encompasses a good 30% of all scenes in this book. It’s also about getting fucked up and feeling bad about yourself after a breakup, which,,,,, I will not elaborate upon for spoilery reasons, but you get the picture.

Episode 3 - ‘First Fight’
My attempt at analyzing, interpreting and understanding the Garden of Eden dream scene. Whether it’s intended by the writers I don’t know.
CALLIOPE: “Juliette? What are you doing here? Where are we?”
JULIETTE: “Eden. The beginning. I swear, when I bit you, I had no idea that it would link us like this. You don’t believe me.”
CALLIOPE: “I don’t know what to believe. Or how to feel. I mean, I shouldn’t feel anything for you.”
JULIETTE: “But?”
CALLIOPE: “But you’re nothing like the monsters I grew up hating.”
JULIETTE: “So just go with it. Anything is possible here.”
This shared dream scene shows us why Calliette’s fluctuating enemies-to-lovers/lovers-to-enemies dynamic works so well,… as well as also why it doesn’t. You’ve got the duty-bound logical Calliope and the defy-thy-nature idealist Juliette in a shared dream and they are trying to get the other to see each other’s point of view. Cal is arguing that what’s happening between them shouldn’t be happening and Jules is arguing that they should just go with the flow. Juliette wins out because Cal is in an environment where she doesn’t have to watch what she says or does, lest it upsets anyone - a dream. Where action can happen and they’ll be no consequence. The dream suddenly turns into a nightmare and the snake (Monster) and the sword (Hunter) shows up immediately putting them at odds with each other and reminding them what they really are and why they can never really be. They’re mortal enemies. And so every time they try to be together, even in a dream, there’s the foreshadowing that all it will cause is pain and destruction for themselves and their families.
Keep in mind that this shared dream happens before the raid and before Cal gets kidnapped by Elinor. So there is no reason for Cal to suddenly start thinking of Juliette as anything other than a monster that she just happens to be attracted to. A monster that fought her and paralysed her the night before. So she’s sharing a dream with somebody she doesn’t trust and is determined to not let in romantically… and yet Juliette has sway over her resolve because in a dream Cal doesn’t have to be this due-diligent warrior and Juliette doesn’t have to be this inherent evil. They play with temptation when Juliette picks the fruit from the peach tree… and that’s when they’re forced to battle one another as the opposing sides of a war that began before life itself. Showing them and the audience watching them that they can’t escape the inevitable even in a dream. But they’re still connected anyways.
So the cleverness of this dynamic is that it IS enemies-to-lovers but it’s in such a way where they don’t have a choice. Their families in conflict are only half of the issue. Nature itself is against them and yet they are still drawn together by the stars. So to me, it’s more compelling than Romeo and Juliet because the supernatural is involved in it and in the supernatural, death isn’t the be-and-end-all of a storyline, a narrative or a relationship. All it ever does is make it get more complicated and deeper. And I am so excited to see where they take it in Season 2 because they honestly have the freedom to take it anywhere and do anything because it’s supernatural and that’s something that Romeo and Juliet wasn’t. So you have that factor for Calliette’s coupling on top of it being queer, interracial and star-crossed lovers.
What’s funny to me about this dream is a lot of people have interpreted it as Eve and Lilith (the first humans) Cal and Jules are assuming the identities of in it. But I don’t think it’s depicting that at all. I think the identities they’re assuming are the first Guild Hunter and Legacy Vampire… who may have fell in love and this shared dream they have is a warning to them. It’s a warning they’re repeating a history that will only end with one, the other or both of them dead. The dream is foreshadowing a challenge to come because it’s happened before and they’re playing with their fate.

Thank you for the new Starcrossed it was just what I needed today. I loved it but poor Alex is going through it isn’t he 😂 but I am intrigued about him wanting to do fisting again. I’m so curious and can’t wait to see where you are going with this one. Will Alex be in a better mindset in the next one or is Jack gonna have to help fix him?
Fix him??? He’s not broken 😭😭😭
