Lazy Student (Study) Tips
The best study techniques (in general) are the SPQR method, flashcards, mind maps, split pages, teaching the content to other people, past papers and blurting
Free time tip : Carry flashcards or split pages around and test yourself with them whenever you have time to waste (during tv breaks, waiting for the bus ..)
Know your worst topics in all subjects and find resources for every single one of them. Since you know your weaknesses, you can ask for help from your teachers. If your teachers aren’t reliable (like mine lol), make a list of resources you can use to self study, and then self study whenever you can
Find your ideal study routine by testing out different environments: can you study for 1hr in a row or do you need breaks in between? Do you work best at night or during the day?
Mentally go over 1 topic (your hardest) before bed
Best resources : Knowt (quizlet replacement), cheatography (study guides), ocean of pdf (free pdf site for literally anything), khan academy, ck12 (textbooks per grade, study guides, exercises for free)
Best study youtube channels for more study tips: Fayefilms, Cajun Koi Academy, Amy Wang, Han Zhango, Mike Dee, Study to Success, Crash Course, Tina Huang, Ali Abdaal

subject-specific studying: math
this is the first part of my newest series, subject-specific study tips. please enjoy & check out my other posts :)
Tumblr media
there is no "easy" way to succeed in math. the first thing you need to recognize is that math is the hardest subject you have, meaning you need to spend the most time on it. there aren't any easy hacks to help you here.
practice, practice, practice. the goal in math is to learn, not memorize. the only way to succeed in math is by practicing questions over and over again until you have completely understood the material.
do not leave a single stone unturned or you will regret it lol. even if you don't understand a small, tiny, seemingly irrelevant detail i guarantee you it will be on the test.
always ask your teachers questions. preferably ask them in class, because there will be someone who has the same questions as you, but after class works too. just make sure to write them in a notebook so you can remember the questions.
redo the homework, focusing on the hardest questions. most of the time your test will be harder than the homework. go over all your homework and select the most difficult questions to solve.
time yourself. make sure you can solve the problems under a time constraint, one similar to the test. not only do you need to get each problem correct, you also need to do so under time constraints.
review previous and new work before going to class. even if you don't understand it, always try to stay on top of what you're doing. seeing the material previously helps reinforce it better.
sleep well. before every math class, make sure you're alert and awake, because math classes move fast.
create a practice test by taking questions from online, past exams, and homework. try creating testing conditions similar to the test using the same time constraints and even testing in the same time of day. make it as accurate to the actual test as possible.

monday/tuesday week six
energy levels can fluctuate and productivity along with it, and that is okay…
but it is annoying! especially when you’re trying to get used to the increased pace of uni courses, which is the boat i am currently in.
i tend to struggle with change and i am only just over two weeks in to my new course at a new campus with new lecturers and classmates, and with a new way of studying. thus, it makes sense that i am tired but is is slightly jarring to go from not ever really having struggled with understanding things for school to feeling a bit lost when the professor writes and talks fast and covers so much content that i don’t even have time to think about it, just try to get it written in my notes so that i can refer back to them later.
i do like to be challenged and this is definitely an experience that i will have great use of but right now, i am a bit too tired to appreciate that.
anyway, i hope you are not too stressed and remember to take care of yourself. rest is productive!
have a lovely day!

Geology Casual Reads
Last week we had the luxury of having Marcia Bjornerud do a talk via Zoom at our university, it was really thought provoking for a couple reasons.
If you don't know Marcia, she is the author of a couple books including 'Timefulness: How thinking like a geologist can help save the world' and 'Turning to Stone: Discovering the subtle wisdom of rocks'. These books are typical nonfiction works that are written in casual english allowing people didn't get a degree in geo to enjoy it.
Tumblr media
Have I read them? No... Because I didn't really no they existed until last week which is actually really sad. That isn't exactly my point though.
My point! Is!
Her entire talk was centered around the history of geology, talking about key figures and setbacks they had to face because of religion/ politics/ people in general looking down on geology as a science (think Big Bang Theory).
The talk's main focus was just exploring how geology has faced many setbacks in the past, and how we are still actively seeing the same setbacks, looking at the oil and gas industry, and people branding geology as this negative force against climate change (which like 99% of geologists also hate oil and gas industry as well), and so it gets shunned as a choice for incoming students with an interest in geoscience, even though a lot of environmental remediation jobs want people with a geology background.
Her final statement was essentially the same sentiment a lot of geo-communicators have which is "We have to get geology out there", for her it is writing this nonfiction literature, for other geoscience communicators it's by making Tiktoks/Reels to generate more incoming students, but there is a general sense of hopelessness which is just... geoscience isn't taught in most schools save, maybe... 1 month of content.
There is a reason a lot of conspiracy theories revolve around misunderstandings of the earth... ANYWAY, I could rant about that for ages but I hate that line of thought.
What impact this talk had on me was simple... It was a sense of pride for my science. I can't begin to tell you how exhausting it is to justify studying rocks, because let me tell you, you ALWAYS have to justify yourself. For the most part, you kind of just smile and get used to it. Yet listening to this talk granted me so much relief I couldn't even explain it.
ALL THIS TO SAY:
I want to read these books, and I want more casual geology non fiction recommendations, please tell me what you have read!
I have read the 'sixth extinction by Elizabeth Kolbert already, so I will recommend that (it is a bit depressing though)
Other media recommendations I have right now: 'Orb: on the movements of the earth'

ultimate test prep checklist: the day before
a few years back, i made a checklist to help keep me on track for major testing days. it helped a lot, so just decided to share it!
☐ get at least 7 hours of sleep before your test. for teenagers, get at least 8-9 hours. make sure you don't oversleep, though; you can end up groggy on testing day. i've said this once and i'll say it again: good sleep is crucial for test scores. avoid stupid mistakes as much as possible.
☐ eat a healthy, nutritious breakfast. go for fruits, oats, eggs- whatever can keep you awake & alert throughout the day without making you crash from a sugar high.
☐ don't continue cramming on the night before. it sounds counterintuitive, but anything you do the night before will only make you more agitated the next day + won't even matter, since one day of studying doesn't make much difference. instead, focus on getting a good night's sleep.
☐ stay hydrated. don't underestimate how much hydration can affect your concentration. a general rule of thumb is to drink half your body weight in ounces.
☐ organize your materials. no one wants to show up on testing day and realize their calculator died. make sure you pack everything you need and might need (better be safe than sorry), including chargers, extra pencils, and your notes.
☐ always arrive five minutes early. you want to have time to set your materials up and have advance notice in case anything goes wrong. start your test on a good note.
☐ do a light review a few hours before. do not cram. just review your notes, go over the concepts in your brain. now is not the time to ask questions about concepts you're confused about.
☐ stay confident & calm. you got this! one test won't be the end of everything. remain calm throughout the test and DO NOT PANIC. panicking will make everything worse- stay calm and skip questions you don't understand. you can always go back to them afterwards.
and that's a wrap! hopefully you all found this useful.
i've also created a google docs you can print out, which can be accessed here:
test-taking strategies, part 4 - full series here!

hello! i thought i’d do a little introduction post to anyone who might stumble upon my account
my name is rakel, i am 21 and from sweden. i have just started a chemistry course at university, which is taking up most of my time. when i’m not studying, i like to read, sew, play instruments and sing in my choir.
i am currently living at home with my parents but i lived in a different city from 2022-2024 when i went to music school for two years. it was a wonderful experience but i am planning on keeping my music a hobby and eventually working in STEM as i intend to start an engineering programme next autumn.
the academic year 24/25 is a sort of year ”in between” for me, maybe not a gap year per se, because i have been both studying (astrophysics) and working (as a teacher sub) during the past term and now i am studying full time. i have, however, not been on any clear academic path as i am not studying a programme.
so that’s a little (or a lot) about me! this blog (are they called blogs on tumblr?) will probably consist of musings and pictures from my everyday experiences and i hope you stick around!
take care!
