Why More Black Women Are Entering the STEM Field & Why It Matters
Tumblr media
Black women are breaking barriers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) like never before, stepping into fields that have historically lacked diversity. While STEM careers offer high salaries, innovation, and job security, the push for Black women in these spaces is about more than just representation—it’s about creating generational wealth, closing opportunity gaps, and ensuring our voices shape the future of technology, medicine, and science.
Why Black Women Are Choosing STEM:
1. High Earning Potential & Job Security – STEM careers often come with six-figure salaries and strong career growth.
2. Innovation & Impact – From medical breakthroughs to tech advancements, Black women are making history in fields that shape society.
3. Representation Matters – Seeing Black women succeed in STEM inspires the next generation to pursue these careers.
4. Closing the Opportunity Gap – More scholarships, mentorship programs, and initiatives are making STEM more accessible.
5. Entrepreneurial Freedom – Many Black women in STEM are starting their own businesses, consulting firms, and tech startups.
How to Enter the STEM Field:
• Education & Training: Look into STEM-focused degrees, boot camps, and certifications.
• Networking & Mentorship: Join organizations like Black Girls Code, NSBE, or STEM Noire for guidance.
• Internships & Scholarships: Take advantage of programs designed to support Black women in STEM.
• Build Skills & Confidence: Develop coding, engineering, or research skills through online courses and hands-on projects.
Black women belong in STEM, and the more we step into these fields, the more we change the future. The time is now—let’s innovate, lead, and break ceilings together.

monday/tuesday week six
energy levels can fluctuate and productivity along with it, and that is okay…
but it is annoying! especially when you’re trying to get used to the increased pace of uni courses, which is the boat i am currently in.
i tend to struggle with change and i am only just over two weeks in to my new course at a new campus with new lecturers and classmates, and with a new way of studying. thus, it makes sense that i am tired but is is slightly jarring to go from not ever really having struggled with understanding things for school to feeling a bit lost when the professor writes and talks fast and covers so much content that i don’t even have time to think about it, just try to get it written in my notes so that i can refer back to them later.
i do like to be challenged and this is definitely an experience that i will have great use of but right now, i am a bit too tired to appreciate that.
anyway, i hope you are not too stressed and remember to take care of yourself. rest is productive!
have a lovely day!

yesterday i went to amazon development centre to meet other girls accepted to the engineering program. we divided ourselves into project groups by choosing which problem we wanted to work on and we talked about our ideas for a bit.
after a short break we had a group meeting with a psychologist where we discussed working in a group and got to know each other a bit more.
then we had lunch (every option had sesame and i'm allergic so i drank some coffee) and headed to a computer room where we got one alexa for a group and got to know how it works. we also got assigned to a python course, which is great because it's not really taught in school

Back to school finally!! +Photo dump of the food from the last weeks of summer break. +Roommate featured.
Our new dorm building is better than I expected, just waiting for maintenance to take off the wonky closet door.

Some of today’s tasks, I find that I always overfill my task list.
I’m entering chapter 3 harmonically excited vibration and I’m still a bit confused but I’m gonna try my hardest.
I’m recovering from my lung infection, it was at its worst yesterday hence no post.
Happy studying!! (do u like my nails? :3 )

Aisha Bowe, a trailblazer in aerospace engineering, has made significant contributions to science and serves as an inspiring figure in Black history. Born to Bahamian immigrants in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Bowe’s journey to prominence began at a community college, where her aptitude for mathematics propelled her toward engineering. She earned both a bachelor’s degree in aerospace engineering and a master’s in space systems engineering from the University of Michigan.
At NASA’s Ames Research Center, Bowe contributed to developing algorithms supporting Air Traffic Management. Her work earned her the National Society of Black Engineers’ Outstanding Technical Contribution award in 2012. Beyond her technical achievements, Bowe mentored students through the Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement (MESA) Program, demonstrating her commitment to fostering the next generation of engineers.
In 2013, Bowe founded STEMBoard, a technology company addressing complex challenges for government and private sector clients. Under her leadership, STEMBoard ranked 2,284th on Inc. magazine’s 2020 list of the 5,000 fastest-growing private companies. Bowe also launched LINGO, a coding kit designed to teach hardware and software design, making STEM education more accessible to underrepresented youth.
In 2025, Bowe is set to make history as part of Blue Origin’s first all-female crewed spaceflight, alongside notable figures such as singer Katy Perry and journalist Gayle King. This mission will mark the first human-crewed spaceflight with no men since 1963, highlighting Bowe’s role in breaking barriers and inspiring future generations.
Aisha Bowe’s journey from community college to aerospace engineer and entrepreneur exemplifies resilience and dedication. Her efforts in promoting STEM education and her upcoming spaceflight solidify her status as a pivotal figure in science and Black history.

wednesday | february 5
today, i started a new module with a new professor. i like his style of lecture much better so far! he also speaks in a way that is not as stressful and takes breaks between his sentences (probably because we have more time for this topic) which makes class a much more pleasant experience. i think that even when we get to trickier bits of this topic, that i will not feel as stressed trying to keep up during the lecture.
i also had my first lab today! it was quite fun and i also think it went quite well. my day was on the longer side with my first lecture at 8.15 and i was finished with the lab at 4 (although it was schedules until 5 we thankfully didn’t need all that time). my motivation was back, even though i am slightly sleep-deprived at the moment. i’m looking forward to learning more and also maybe catching up on sleep (dare to dream)
have a lovely day! remember to take breaks and listen to your bodily cues!

i made some friends which i'm so grateful for

Dark academia in STEM, specifically the medical field
-early mornings spent in the lab, shirtsleeves rolled up to your elbows as you work on your dissection
-piles of textbooks and notebooks sitting on your desk, still scattered from your previous study session
-or, alternatively, a neat folder of starred tabs holding all of your online textbooks and notes if you prefer digital
-late nights spent hunched over your notes, half-drunk cup of tea (or coffee) sitting beside you
-anatomy figures printed from the internet (because your time could be better spent studying), with the parts labeled by hand
-studying with friends at the library, sharing a whiteboard and rapid-firing questions at each other
-a pen and notebook or iPad and pencil perched neatly in your lap, ready to take notes
-being the first person to answer on discussion boards after class
-bringing the entire pot of tea or coffee back to your room, because you know you’ll need it while studying
-drawing on yourself (or a partner), labeling all of the bones, muscles, and nerves you need to know for your next exam
-moving confidently through your lab practicals, knowing the answers effortlessly due to all of your studying
-carrying your tea or coffee to class in a thermos, hands wrapped around it on those chilly mornings
-printed out slideshows for ease of studying
-taking a break from studying to walk around campus or through the woods, getting some fresh air and sunlight after being cooped up in the library or your room for too long
-curling up with a good book/tv show/ movie and snacks after an exam, taking the time to relax and recharge before grades come out, knowing you did your best
-realizing that this field is hard, and getting a D or a C on an exam, or even in a class, isn’t the end of the world. You will bounce back. You will get your degree.
