Guilty Pleasures ༓ jjk, kth (m) | ch. i
Tumblr media
✑ Summary: Three years of being Seoul's power couple earns you nothing but a big fat divorce settlement and your face plaster on every gossip column around town. You're angry, hurt, and desperately want to move on, but worst of all? You're still in love with the man who started the whole mess, even though the most he can ever see you as is a friend. The renowned actor you've hired to be your company's new endorser seems to have a soft spot for you though. He's easy on the eyes, you'll admit, but who actually wants a divorcee like yourself? It's unrealistic really.

From the moment he stepped into your office, Jungkook could tell every ounce of color was drained from your face. All except for your puffy red eyes that is, which he knows you've been rubbing fervently to keep your tears from rolling down your cheeks.
He doesn't blame you for it though–you're his ex-wife.
Recent ex-wife that is.
For three years the two of you masqueraded as the perfect power couple; appearing completely in love to the public eye in hopes of forming an unshakable business partnership (transaction more like). You attended charity balls together, collaborated on several work projects, and attended countless corporate functions to establish both your presence in your respective industries.
That's right, you and Jungkook were in an arranged marriage and it would have flourished into a classic love story if it wasn't for one obvious detail–you're the only one that fell in love.
Despite all the times he's called you "stunning" when you dolled up for formal events or that you "feel so good" during late-night sex, Jungkook never truly loved you. He cared about you, did his best not to intentionally hurt you, and even tried loving you back; thinking he could fall for you with time.
But the most he could ever see you as is a friend, a beautiful friend, though a friend nonetheless. He knows how much it pains you, especially after you've held out hope that he'll want you the same way someday. This one embarrasses you the most which he wishes it wouldn't.
Well, Jungkook doesn't want to trap either of you in a loveless marriage any longer. So even if it means being the center of gossip columns for a while, he's giving you a divorce so you can find the right person to share your love with.
After all, you deserve it; you both do.
Today's day one of looking at one another as exes and it's bittersweet, to say the least. The only factor that would make this worse is if children were in the equation, but there aren't any.
"Thanks for letting me swing by __," he speaks first, doing his best to conjure up a genuine smile. The black floral button-up he's wearing suits him well and his smooth chest peaking out near the collar is far too tempting, yet you know better than to let your eyes linger.
"Of course," you answer and grab a small box from behind your desk. "These are 100% yours so I wouldn't keep them from you." Jungkook takes the box of belongings from your hands with slight hesitation. You're keeping a brave front for the sake of civility and professionalism.
He doesn't blame you for that either.
As a CEO of a large multinational corporation himself, Jungkook's no stranger to the age-old philosophy that that office is no place to let your personal woes get out of hand; you have a team to lead and a reputation to uphold. The latter is proving to be harder for you than him, however, being that the media is portraying you as some kind of she-devil, spinster, or worse of all—a cheater.
Jungkook plans to personally make sure those articles get removed from the public eye before the end of the week. (Not that he'll tell you though.)
"I still could have dropped by the house to pick these up if it'd been easier. I feel bad for interrupting your work day over a couple of old books, records, and dog toys." He watches you nod silently as he vocalizes the inconvenience of it all; he really doesn't have to but he does it anyway.
"No, it's alright. You haven't been to the house since you moved out, so I thought it'd be better if we met here instead." You pause to check the time. "If there's anything you think of that you might've forgotten later, just let me know. In the meantime, I have a meeting in twenty so..."
"He misses you."
"I'm sorry?"
"Bam, I mean." Jungkook throws the box under an arm and pulls out his phone. He scrolls through his camera gallery until he gets to one particular photo of a red and tan Doberman. "He hates the new place and all he does is sulk by the door."
Your heart's already struggling to settle down from the painful reality that the man you love is leaving you, let alone being reminded of another forced separation. Bam's the closest thing to a baby that either of you ever had and he was one of the few things that bonded you and your now ex-husband together.
Being Jungkook's dog, however, he couldn't stay with you. That means no more visiting the dog park, sneaking treats behind Jungkook's back, and snuggling together in the king-size bed after a stressful day.
"I'm sure he just wants his favorite chew toy that's been held hostage at the house," you joke lightly, thinking it simpler to spin the topic. It's similar to what Jungkook does when he uses flowery language to soften the cold hard truth of your divorce; that he doesn't love you and he can't ever. "Give Bam a lot of attention for me. I miss him too."
"Of cour—shit!" When Jungkook moves to slip his phone back into his pocket he loses his balance, causing the box with his belongings to spill out on your office floor. Naturally, you kneel down to help him clean up the mess. It's not until your fingers reach for the same item and come into contact with each other that you quickly retract your hand. "Sorry, did I shock you?" He asks gently and tosses the last item into the box before standing up.
"No, you didn't." You rise to your feet as well, until you're face to face with him. This time it's closer than before. His hooded eyes stare straight into yours and you can't believe it takes being inches from his face to notice how bloodshot his eyes are. "You look exhausted. You should go home and rest Kook." The petname is out before your brain tells you to stop.
Jungkook's eyes widen, the corner of his lip subtly quirking up for the first time since the start of the conversation. "Don't worry about me __. I probably get more breaks than you do. But thanks." He briefly glances at the ticking Snoopy clock behind you, a Christmas gift he gave you as a joke last year. "You still have that?"
You look over your shoulder at the small, Snoopy-shaped digital clock on your desk. Ten minutes until your next meeting. "It's cute and it makes for a great conversation starter with clients so I guess so. If you want me to give it ba—"
"Keep it," he interrupts. "Please, it was a gift and I'd like you to have it if you enjoy it." Jungkook gnaws on his lip before continuing. "Speaking of clients and business partners, I should make myself scarce now shouldn't I?"
"Yes. I do have that meeting soon." But once he leaves, neither of you is sure when you'll see the other again aside from the odd charity event. The Annual Winter Gala in December is one that particularly comes to mind.
Most high-ranking executives like yourselves attend the function to keep up appearances and to network with other professionals. Last year, you and Jungkook were the center of attention however now that you're divorced, you fear you'll be avoided like the plague—they always preferred Jungkook over you anyway.
"You're forming a new partnership with that actor, right? Kim Taehyung? I read an inkling about it online yesterday." He also read his whole biography too. The man is equally handsome as he is altruistic and kind.
"Nothing's signed and sealed yet. I'm sure you've heard that he's gotten dozens of other offers on the table. To be honest, I'm surprised you haven't nabbed him yet."
"Yeah, we don't need...wait sorry, let me rephrase that. We aren't ready for a new partner or merger yet."
You can read between the lines despite Jungkook's correction. His company is thriving more than yours in every way, so he doesn't need the help of a third-party endorser...like you. Well, you're not doing too shabby yourself and this isn't simply about fame and fortune you want to argue.
The head poking through your door stops you from following through on that last line.
"Mrs. Jeon—shit." Your secretary Kim Namjoon screws his eyes shut at his drastic misstep. "Ms. __, Kim Taehyung called and said he'll be a bit late due to unexpected delays during his filming today. He apologizes profusely but is on his way over now. Sajangnim," he bows at Jungkook respectively.
"That's fine, Namjoon, thank you. You can send him in whenever he gets here. Mr. Jeon was just about to leave and I had the rest of my day cleared."
"Of course. I'll let him know to come in." Your secretary nods and shuts the door. Jungkook shifts between his feet once Namjoon is out of sight, a habit he's picked up that tells you he has more to say.
"Was there anything else, Mr. Jeon?" You shuffle a few files on your desk, prepping for your meeting with Taehyung. At this point, you're not even looking at Jungkook.
"Mr. Jeon? I think I prefer when you call me Kook more," he mutters, allowing his line of sight to catch a glimpse of your lips. "Can I...kiss you? Before I go."
The question knocks the wind out of your lungs and you instantly lift your head up toward him. "Kiss me?" You gulp slowly, then shake your head. "No, I'd rather we not. Goodbye kisses aren't really my thing." You couldn't be a bigger liar, evident from the sudden churning in your gut. Having Jungkook's lips on yours was the best and worst moments of your entire relationship but you have to fight yourself....your innate desires that tell you to say yes.
"Okay, I understand. What about a hug?"
"Jungkook..."
"I'm sorry, I'm pushing. Thanks again for my stuff." He gestures at the box under his arm. "I hope your meeting with Kim Taehyung goes well. Maybe I'll see you both at the next Winter Gala." He makes a beeline for the door.
"Wait!"
Jungkook stills in his tracks as he watches you stride in front of him. He's unsure what you stopped him for until your hands reach out towards his shirt collar, smoothing the delicate material down. A light smile plays on his face as you do this, though he says nothing aside from a simple 'thanks'.
"It was bothering me the whole time." You finish fixing his collar and peer up into his Bambi eyes. Out of all the potential suitors, you wish Jeon Jungkook didn't become your husband. It's not like you got to keep him or anything.
Jungkook once again flickers his gaze toward your barely parted lips. And this time, you do the same for him. Before either of you have time to back out you lean forward and kiss him.
It's a hard kiss too. Painful but so inviting that neither of you pulls away.
With his free hand, Jungkook snakes a hand around your waist to hug you close. Having his fingers pressed against the small of your back is so familiar and all you can do is deepen the kiss.
You're obviously not the only one that gets a sense of pleasure from this because, in a matter of seconds, the box from under Jungkook's arm falls to the ground. He then places his second hand on the side of your neck and jawline which you lean into, exposing the other side of your neck.
"Jungkook," you gasp when his lips attach themself to the soft skin, sucking lightly. His teeth come out and nip too. "Wait, we can't do this, we shouldn't. Taehyung, he'll be here soon."
"That would have sounded so convincing if you didn't just moan the words, baby." He walks you backward until you're forced to sit atop your mahogany desk.
"Don't call me that." You allow him to push up your pencil skirt and spread your thighs until your panties are the only material he sees. You decided to go with black lace today, his favorite now that you think about it.
"Did you—"
"No, they weren't for you."
A brief growl leaves the man's rose-tinted lips. "In that case, we don't need them." He places both hands on your hips and brings you into another kiss, messier than before. His tongue shoves between the seam of your lips to lick every crevasse he can. He hasn't kissed you like this for months and to be brutally honest, he's missed it as much as you.
Jungkook hasn't been with anyone else since marrying you either, which means he's completely adjusted to your body, your preferences, and what turns you on. The same applies to you so while he's busy shoving his tongue down your throat, you palm his half-harden bulge through his trousers.
"Mm," he groans and bucks his hips into your hand. You smile at how well you've managed to draw a response from him. With a little burst of confidence, you hastily move to unbuckle his pants. "What are you doing?" He mumbles between kisses.
You decide not to answer, preferring to reach inside his trousers to take his length out. You make sure to pump it a few times until he's fully hard. Jungkook has a gorgeous dick, and that takes a lot for you to admit.
"Fuck, that's it." He says with gritted teeth, now watching your hand as it moves up and down his cock. "Get me how you want me."
"We don't have much time." You slide your panties down your legs and spread your thighs wide apart, which makes Jungkook's eyes dilate about 10 meters. "Fuck me, please." One last time. Make love to me one last time.
"Are you sure? I don't have a condom."
"It's okay, I'm on birth control. As long as you're still clean then its fine."
"I am. I got tested recently. But are you sure you want this?"
You glance at his pulsating length, tip leaking with pre-cum, and swallow hard. "Hurry."
"Fuck, okay." Jungkook wastes not another second and guides you flat on your back, his hands resting on either side of your body. The coolness of your desk has you shiver slightly. He then urges you to raise your legs until they can wrap loosely around his slim waist. And as if second nature, you link your arms around his neck as he eases him into you. He's able to bottom out without much effort thanks to how wet you've become.
"Oh god." Your back arches off the surface of your desk as Jungkook thrusts into you. They're only practice thrusts at first to get you re-adjusted to his size, yet the pleasure zipping down your spine already has your eyes rolling up.
You shouldn't be doing this at all. Your conscious whispers to again to which you blindly dismiss. You'll enjoy it now and tomorrow, start a new—another lie you tell yourself.
"Fuckfuckfuck, you're so wonderful for me," he chants while pushing his cock in and out of you, the speed of his movements picking up to an insane rate. Jungkook never had an issue with quickies so he's likely in his element now. "You know what this reminds me of?" He cocks a smirk and kisses down your neck.
"Hm?"
"That time when we were abroad for a weekend conference. Remember when we stopped at my second office to pick up some files? You were so horny that day that you pushed me into my chair and demanded that I let you ride me. It took the wind right out of my sails to see you like that, so confident and in control." He prys apart the top button of your blouse until he can slide the material down your shoulders. He doesn't take it off completely, favoring the chance to place kisses on your newly exposed area instead.
"I was beyond stressed that day. It was the first time I had to speak at that conference and you looked so good with your freshly slicked back hair. I couldn't stop myself—oh fuck! Right there Kook, don't slow down. Please." Jungkook grunts at the use of his petname and fucks you rougher, sweat forming around his forehead as his dark hair dangles messily over his eyes.
You manage to sneak a glance at the time on your Snoopy clock between thrusts. "Shit, I need to come soon, or Kim Taehyung's never going to agree to do business with me." The man laughs and buries his head on your shoulder.
"You never know, he could be really into threesomes."
"Fuck! Don't joke about that." You claw at his back and surprise both of you with the unexpected clenching of your pussy.
"You're right, I take it back," he groans and continues to snap his hips. "Looks like he's not the one who wants a threesome after all, considering your body's response to the suggestion. You wanna ask him if he walks in?" He whispers in your ear and you're embarrassed that your cheeks burn at the thought.
Of course, Kim Taehyung was sexy and you've rehearsed to yourself dozens of times not to let yourself get any crazy ideas about him. Still, one unrequited love is enough for you; Taehyung wouldn't want a divorcee. You shake the train of thought before it has time to go any further. "Make me come, Kook. Need you to finish too. It's not just Taehyung who could walk in at any second."
Jungkook grunts and continues to thrust into you, bouncing you up and down his thick length as the desk shakes underneath you. He feels you getting closer and closer by the sporadic clenching of your walls squeezing him. A big part of him doesn't want this to end but it has to....he doesn't love you. He only wants to make you feel good before he has to say goodbye. Both of you come just before Namjoon calls your office phone, giving you a heads-up that Taehyung's about to enter your office.
Jungkook shoves his pants back on while you button up your blouse and fold over your skirt. You decided to shove your underwear in your bag with the lack of time. No one has any business digging in there anyway.
"How do I look?" You turn around to get a quick once-over from Jungkook but he's already out the door. Now the person standing in front of you is Kim Taehyung who has nothing but the most genuine smile.
"You look lovely as always Ms. __. I'm so sorry I'm late by the way. I feel terrible about it so I brought you these." Taehyung whips out a large bouquet of your favorite flowers. "Hope you don't mind that I did a little research on you ahead of time. I found out these have a special place in your heart."
You smile and accept the bouquet with thanks. As you set them on your desk, a messages comes through your phone. You manage to give a quick look.
Unknown Number: Sorry I had to duck so fast! I know it looked rude but Taehyung was already opening the door and you were dressed so I thought it'd be better if I left. Hope you're meeting goes well! And thanks for everything today ;) if you need anything, you have my number.
You flip your phone over and invite Taehyung to have a seat. Business is business, and you have to carry on even if your heart has completely sunk to the ground. Kim Taehyung is sweet anyway, so you'll enjoy his company.
Too bad you don't realize how much he enjoys yours as well.

Hardersson x Daughter!Reader
Part of The Big Adventures Universe
Summary: Your first day at Barcelona
Tumblr media
Your first day at Barcelona starts a week after Momma and Morsa give you Prins. He's an absolute sweetheart and you coo softly at him after getting back from your morning run.
You're trying to get yourself into a routine so a morning run was what you settled on - even though you weren't really a morning person.
Prins' tail wags happily as you unclip his leash and he runs off to lap at his water bowl.
You check your phone as you go to grab your training bag.
There's a few texts from Tia Tana and Alexia, both wishing you good luck on your first day that you shoot off thank yous to before you crouch down to run a hand through Prins' fur.
"I'll be home soon," You promise him," Don't tear apart my stuff."
He yips at you and you take that as agreement, slipping out the front door.
You live close to the training ground and take a deep breath. You've already signed your contract and done the media commitments so this is your first day actually training with the team.
You stand outside the changing room and take a deep breath to calm your nerves, clenching your fist to steel yourself as you head inside.
There's blur in front of you and suddenly you feel like you're being crushed. You recognise this feeling though and hug back, resting your head in her neck.
"I've missed you," Natalia says, pulling back to cup your face.
You feel your cheeks go red and hope she doesn't notice. "I missed you too," Is what you say back.
She pulls you in for another hug, kisses raining down on your head inbetween a desperate slur of English and Spanish.
Natalia keeps chattering away to you as you change. You think her eyes linger a little bit when you've got your top off but you don't want to give yourself hope so you try to ignore it.
Natalia's just a touchy person. Whatever feelings you have for her shouldn't be projected onto what she may feel for you.
Her hand grips yours as she pulls you out onto the pitch, making brief introductions to everyone for you.
"I don't know how you expect me to get to know everyone if you keep dragging me away," You laugh.
"I want to keep you all to myself for a little bit longer," She says, her eyes boring into yours like there's something else she wants to say," Is that so wrong?"
You shake your head, lacing your fingers with hers. "No. There's nothing wrong with that."
"Good." Natalia steps further into your space until you're close enough to feel her breath on your lips.
It takes you back to your first kiss with her, when the Spain team had made the journey all the way over to Denmark again and you took her to a little café after the match. You had a nice afternoon snack and then walked with her to the park where you confessed you had never kissed someone before. She had pressed her lips to yours in that instant.
Because she was a good friend and good friends helped their friends when they're feeling nervous.
Your heart had sped up in that moment just like it was speeding up now.
"I'm selfish," Natalia continues," I like having you all to myself. The others can have you next week. This week you're mine."
You smile at her shyly as her own grin widens and she tugs you over to where the manager is gathering everyone around.
Barcelona training is a bit more intense than Arsenal training but you're still running off your World Cup fitness so you adapt pretty quickly. Your Momma said once that you're good like that, that you can adapt to anything and blend in with a group like a little chameleon.
Admittedly, she said that to you when you were a lot younger but you're happy to keep the comparison even now.
There's only a few breaks in the pace of training and, every time, Natalia comes back into your orbit. She's always touching you in some way but her preferred position is standing behind you, arms wrapped around your waist and chin hooked around your shoulder.
Having her so close makes goosebumps rise on your body and your heart thumps so hard that you're a little bit scared she's going to hear it.
You write it all off as her being Spanish though, even as soft little kisses are pressed to your neck. They're a bit ticklish and you flinch away.
"Stop it! I'm sensitive!"
"Oh?" Natalia quirks a brow, smiling like a wolf," You're sensitive, are you? That's nice to know."
Like usual whenever Natalia's around, your face burns red and you distract yourself by chugging half of your water in one go. But, despite your embarrassment, you lean back into her body, allowing her to support most of your weight as you both sway slightly as you wait around for the gym equipment to be set up.
"Hey," Natalia says softly, directly in your ear like you're the only two out on the pitch," Do you want to go to dinner tonight? There's this nice place near my apartment."
"What did I do to deserve dinner?"
"Survived your first day?" Natalia teases," Pulled of an incredible save against a goal that should have been mine?"
You laugh. "I'm wise to your tricks. You're not putting one past me."
"Oh, come on! Not even a little one?"
"No chance."
"Fine. But, really, dinner?"
"I would," You say," But Prins-"
"Bring him with. I'd love to meet him in person. Come on, what have I got to say to get you to agree?"
"Fine," You say," Dinner with you and Prins. Send me the address."
"I'll pick you up," Natalia replies with a wink," Can't have such a pretty girl walking around alone."
That moment, along with many others, get captured by the media team documenting your first day.
When Magda wakes up the next morning, it's to notifications from the Barcelona Instagram page and she scrolls through it to see if you're featured.
She doesn't know if it's anger or relief that bubbles up in when she sees your face in the pictures but it's definitely anger when she spots Natalia holding you tight against her body.
Your head is tilted back on the other's girl shoulder and you're beaming up at her as one of her hands is under your arm, holding your shoulder and pressing you back against her while the other is splayed out on your hip.
You're both smiling.
She flicks to the next picture and the next, each of them showing you and Natalia in various positions, curled around each other like you're the only two people there.
"Hmm," Pernille says as she rolls over and begins to wake up," Magda? What is it? Has something happened?"
"Is Natalia sleeping with our daughter?
"Huh? What?"
"Is Natalia planning on sleeping with our daughter? I mean, look!" She shoves the phone into Pernille's face.
"I won't lie but she's probably thought about it before. You know what Natalia's like. She's smitten."
"Smitten?" Magda scoffs," That's what you're going with?!"
"I could say patient as well," Pernille replies," I don't know many girls who would pine over someone for so long." She sits up and properly looks at the photos. "Although, I don't think she'll have to wait much longer. Princesse is smitten too."

The bachelors are bachelors no longer! How would they grow old with you? Secondarily, how would they respond to being grandparents?
Ironically I wrote this while staying at my Nans house. I'll be here for the holidays so the next few posts will also be written here, I just thought this was particularly thematic. Halsin was also a perfect fit for this prompt too, so I hope you don't mind me adding him in :)
How would the bachelors (+Halsin) grow old with you and respond to your growing family
Dammon
This blacksmith was sure he'd live the bachelor life for the rest of his days
Who'd want to marry a man so obsessed with his forge that he's basically personified it?
Apparently, he's found the one person out there that can appreciate all his quirks
As the two of you grow older I actually see him stepping back from his forge more
He's already taught your children how to handle the family blacksmithing business, giving over the running of it to your eldest daughter and son-in-law with one of your younger sons happily working there too
As much as it saddens him the aches and creaks in his joints make the work too hard on his aging body, and his hands aren't steady enough for the delicate detail work he used to do
You can't keep him out of the forge completely though, and he still visits regularly and helps with drawing the designs of new projects and commissions
When he isn't hovering over your children's work, he's with you and the grandkids
Dammon settled into a domestic life surprisingly well, and he's a very doting grandfather
He's the type to insist you buy extra treats because he knows a specific grandchild likes it and will be coming over to visit
He always volunteers you two for babysitting as well, the spare rooms in your house that were once your children's now belong to their kids
It's a life Dammon is content with, a large family surrounding him and you by his side, he really couldn't ask for more when he never expected to get this much
Zevlor
Zevlor is built to be a granddad, I'm saying it now
He loves you, his kids, and his grandkids more than anything
As an even older gentleman he's actually still very active
The type of old man to insist on going on long strolls after meals, and he quite happily runs your little hobby farm with the help of your kids
You have a smaller, close knit family
With children living just down the road, while your kids work or take care of the home you and Zevlor happily take the grandkids for entire days
He shows them the same things he showed his kids, things like how to tie shoelaces, to ride a horse, and to wield a sword
You'll see them all trudging back in for lunch, covered with dirt and grinning as they try and hide from you
Even in his older age he's very patient, happily listening to his grandbabies babbling as he feeds them
Speaking of food, Zevlor would want his main meal of the day to be at midday
Once he gets older he doesn't like the feeling of sleeping so soon after a big meal
He does start to take naps, however, and sometimes you'll see him passed out on a comfy chair with a grandchild sleeping on top of him
If no grandchildren are around he'll likely drag you into napping with him too, there's something special about napping with someone else
Zevlor lives a very charming life at the end of the day, and he couldn't be happier about it
Rolan
Rolan is the grumpiest old coot on the block
Absolutely the type to yell at kids to get off his lawn, if he actually had a lawn
Alas, he only has a tower and instead he teaches your only child the art of mastering the weave
As he grows older he somehow seems to grow grumpier and even more introverted
Without you there to drag him out of Ramaziths Tower people likely would've assumed him dead years ago
The only people that see his softer side are you, your child, and your grandchildren
And your grandchildren love coming to the tower, wanting to look at all the pretty things and see their granddad do magic
You know the magic shows that Rolan did for his siblings? He does them for his child and grandchildren too
Speaking of Cal and Lia, he's a doting uncle for their kids and grandkids
It ends up with all three of your families meeting up at the tower for all gatherings and holidays, despite Rolans prickly attitude
It's absolute chaos, and the wizard secretly loves watching everyone joking and having a good time
On a random note, he absolutely teaches your grandkids how to read and do arithmetic at a young age
He insists on reading them bedtime stories whenever possible too, and they love it because he does the voices
Rolan is the one that thought he'd be least likely to be a family man, but it turns out he fits that role quite well
Halsin
You and Halsin run an entire orphanage together, you end up with absolutely loads of kids
Only a handful are your biological kids and you also end up with a full-grown owl bear, but you love them all the same
Halsin is very long lived, even for an elf, and if you're equally long lived then you'll end up keeping the orphage going for literal hundreds of years
Over that time the two of you might see three or four generations of humans grow up, your former charges often coming back to visit with their own children and grandchildren
You end up being a pair of old, happy parents with an impossibly large family
Halsin revels in it, finding a true passion in raising kids into happy and functional adults
It's apparent in the way he grows into the role, happily spending decades retelling the same favourite bedtime stories about him and his companions saving the sword coast
He continues to dote on you too, no matter how old you both get
The elf always reminds you how beautiful you are and how much he loves you
Halsin adores his grandkids too, often having them come for sleepovers or to play with all the other kids
He loves nothing more than seeing everyone safe and content, an owl bear happily trodding along after him
You'll find he insists on running the orphanage for as long as possible too, almost on deaths door by time he finally passes it on to his children to take over
Halsin is a very passionate man, and his giant family is one of his greatest passions

_______________
When you woke up this morning, to say you were surprised was a slight understatement. It was the rustling of sheets next to you that had disturbed your slumber. There was another sudden movement from beside you, this time the perpetrator landed a thump to your shin followed by a soft “shit”. Typical of Eddie to immediately wreak havoc upon his first few moments awake.
He rustled some more, no doubt trying to stretch his limbs from the uncomfortable position he had left himself in last night. You, however, had yet to open your eyes and welcome in the golden morning light. You just lay completely still, ruminating on the events that had led you here to be kicked in the shin and perspiring from the additional body heat radiating from your best friend.
_______________
The night before…
Steve was to be the last out of the door. With a quick turn to the two of you as he pointed with a stern look to Eddie, “Look after her, you hear? Get home safe doll,” he directs to you with a wink and shoots off into the night.
Eddie had hosted another successful evening of drinking and catching up with his friends, now ultimately yours too. The trailer held just enough space for yourself, Eddie, Steve, Nancy, and Robin to be seated. Going back and forth with one another with little updates about each other's lives. These kinds of meet ups were rare and cherished, all of you working steady jobs which resulted in time for you all to be together at once. But having known each other from school, their bond would always prevail. You’d hoped that you could get to that point with them all too.
You and Eddie had been friends for just a short while now. You had moved to Hawkins the year prior and he had been one of the first to grace your presence when the long move had kicked your car in indescribable ways. He began taking overtime to work on your lump of metal and even offered to drive you places in the beginning, though you would regretfully decline. Things escalated when you would spot him around town running errands. Sporadic meetings turned into coffee trips, turning into days out together, turning into being invited into his close group of friends. The last year has been nothing short of a dream, and Eddie has been there to encourage you and envelop you in light and laughter.
As Eddie closed the door behind Steve, he twisted his waist and clasped his hands together, “Nightcap before you go, sweets?” His grin was wicked but you know there was no malice, only mischief and a desire to keep you here longer.
“Only if I’m pouring Munson,” you clap back, “I’d actually like to wake up again in the morning.” you gave him the most exaggerated wink that you could muster, emphasised further with a pair of finger guns before plodding off into his kitchenette to find clean glasses. He followed you of course. You noticed that he did that from almost the moment the two of you met, like a lost puppy. Although you were the one that felt kind of lost when he didn’t do it.
One drink quickly became two as you began to share your fond memories of your first encounter. Two became three when you both elaborated on your in depth plans for the future, of course, including each other. You lost count after four. Your shared recollections had only catalysed a trip down memory lane, telling wild stories from high school and various adventures that you had both been on and how you wished the other could have been there too.
It was clear that neither of you were in a fit state to drive. And when a passing glance to the clock that read 2:06 had confirmed your suspicions that a taxi wasn’t going to be an option, you knew you were staying the night. Neither of you were the first to admit it. Although there was evidently a shared understanding after reminiscing about the amount of whiskey Robin had oh-so-graciously spilt over the couch in her final hour here. You were definitely sharing a bed tonight. Neither of you were against the idea. It was just a new boundary in your relationship that was going to be crossed. Friends share beds. It didn’t have to invoke such a reaction in your chest, matched with the heat rising to your cheeks. But it did nonetheless…
The whole ordeal had been awkward beyond belief. Eddie fumbling around with his duvet and clearing the one side of his bed to get rid of the collection of washing (clean or dirty? You didn’t dare ask), before he sprawled himself like a starfish across the expanse of the mattress with a high-pitched giggle to himself. You stood hesitantly in the doorway to Eddie’s bedroom, nervous at the idea of being forced into such close proximity. You suppose you could consider yourself almost afraid. Afraid that you’d become self-indulgent in the situation. That you would internalise the night too much, only to be let down when he would reinforce the friendzone card.
Too caught up in your tangle of thoughts, you hadn’t noticed that Eddie had rolled over to await your own drop onto the bed only to see that you’d stood paralysed. He shuffled himself into a seated position on the edge of the bed and peared up at you.
“Hey, where’d you go just now?” his voice was almost silent, the soft whisper lulling you gently from your trap.
“No. Don’t worry about it,” you shake your head, “just zoned out”.
He was standing up now, making his way to you slowly. Both hands had raised up to grip your upper arms delicately. Eddie stooped his head slightly to match your eye level. You too could see a flicker of nerves in his eyes.
“It’s just me, sweets. It’s just us,” he beams, “I won’t bite… unless you want me to.” Finishing his little pep talk with a wink and a nudge to your shoulder with his fist. After a deep roll of your eyes and a tired smile, you went to the bathroom to remove the majority of your clothes for bed.
Left in only your cami top from beneath your shirt and your panties, you took one final look in his stained mirror. Going braless had taken a considerable amount of convincing, ultimately choosing your own comfort rather than Eddie’s. Sure, you figured your current outfit would have him stoic enough. But you didn’t want to be the cause of his death when visible nipples became involved. Having to once again pull away from your thoughts, your feet pattered back to his room, you find him deep into dreamland anyways. An inevitable effect that alcohol had on Eddie. At least you wouldn’t have to face the awkwardness of explaining that you don’t tend to bring pyjamas with you to any and all occasions.
With just enough space left for you to crawl onto your side of the bed that he had barely left you, you pull the covers over the two of you and place your head on his embarrassingly flat pillows. You were facing each other now, and this gave you a chance to admire your closest friend while he was at his most peaceful. You already knew that you had feelings for Eddie, you weren’t oblivious to this. But to replace the friendship you had with the risk of something more just didn’t appeal to you. You loved him too much to lose him. So with a weak hand reaching up to brush a stray curl out of his face, and a soft “night,” you closed your own eyes and let Eddie’s even breaths lull you into unconsciousness.
_______________
Adjusting your eyes until they were just open a slither, you’re met with Eddie facing you. Well, his body was facing you, but the slight tilt of his chin tucked into his chest and the lack of eye contact made it clear that his focus was elsewhere. You were by no means naive. You knew exactly what he was looking at without even having to follow his line of sight.
You had always been a larger-chested girl. You started growing boobs from a younger age than most around you and they never seemed to stop growing until you’d reached your later teen years. You never missed how certain shirts wouldn’t fit you right and how dresses would bunch up if they had chest seams. But you certainly never missed how people would stare. Not even just men, anybody. The non-stop gawking if you were to wear a lower neckline, their eyes flickering from your chest to your face when you wore a tight-fitted outfit. You’d made peace with it, accepted that it’d never change. You can’t say that you were overly shocked to find Eddie in the exact same position, he was only human after all.
The thing that had surprised you had been the barely-there grin. The fondness in his expression. Almost as though he was gazing in admiration, rather than the pity or the condescension you were used to. The way his lashes fluttered as he grappled between needing to blink but wanting to stare just that little bit longer. A gentle hum escapes his lips as the corners of his mouth twitch upwards some more.
You huff a small chuckle, your own lips beaming in amusement as his head snaps up to meet you. Horror engulfs his face and his eyes, you think, couldn’t possibly widen any more. You wait for his defense, for his panicking, for his justification. But you’re met with only silence. Silence, and the look of pure dread.
“Mornin’,” you smirk at him, a playful glint in your eyes. “Enjoying the view I see. You’re acting like you’ve never seen tits before” you add after a pause, fueling the fire.
You were wrong. His eyes widened even more…
You won’t deny that there had always been a certain tension between the two of you. Not something you could quite put your finger on but the realisation was always just stuck on the tip of your tongue. You recognised it in the flirtatious banter that you shared, leading many to believe you were a couple. You perceived it in the prolonged touches, the longing stares that both parties were guilty of. But you had always been just… friends. You believed that your feelings for him were rooted in the want for attention, to be somebody’s favourite person. It had only been recently that you felt it blossom into more. Your only dilemma was whether Eddie returned these feelings.
But with him now shamefully caught ogling at your chest, you at least knew that he was definitely interested in a part of you. You began to snort a laugh at him, rolling slightly onto your back to direct your laughter away from his face into the void air of his room. Going back to face him once again, you’re met with an exaggerated pout as he grumbles out, “It’s not funny”.
You’d calmed down very quickly when you saw just how defeated he had become. His expression was crestfallen, and you’d berated yourself for thinking you’d pushed him too far. Tracing your steps back to when you could have elicited such a gloomy response from him, you suddenly drew in a sharp breath, cringing slightly at the words getting ready to leave your lips.
“Eds… you have seen tits before right?” It seemed like such a dumb question in retrospect, but you had realised in this moment that you had never seen Eddie with another girl that wasn’t Nance or Rob. And that he had never mentioned girlfriends tonight whilst you droned on about the trials and tribulations of school.
He playfully scoffs at you, “Of course I’ve seen tits before. Like, maybe. Just, like, not in real life,” he admits, defeated. It’s at this new piece of exclusive Eddie-lore that you have a lightbulb moment. Clearly he was interested in your rack, and you were interested in him. It seemed like a win-win in the first instance. You could show Eddie your tits, and then he’d fall head over heels for you!
Okay, definitely a tad far-fetched. But this was your one shot. You’d never had an opportunity to express how you felt to him before and while this method was highly unconventional, it was worth a shot. Which is what led you to vocalise,
“I could show you them, if you’d like?” you ask, more timidly than you had intended. Eddie deadpanned, awaiting the punch line. But once he saw your expression was that of sincerity rather than sarcasm, he was quick to splutter his words.
“Shit! Umm, are you sure?” he asks, “I mean yeah, that’d be great an’ all, but like, for real?” clearing his throat and trying to maintain a casual demeanor, he eagerly awaited your reply.
“Sure Eds. I don’t mind, really. As your best friend I would be honoured,” you assert with a lighthearted giggle. You don’t miss the slight wince in his face once you’d pulled out the friend card. It further fueled your hope for the future.
“Well then, as you are being so generous and noble, it is I who would be honoured,” he announced in his best medieval knight voice. The two of you broke into a fit of laughter, both feeling slightly delirious at the proposition laid out before you. That same proposition was also the reason the laughter dies down as quickly as it started and the room began to feel more silent, more serious. You’re the first to start speaking again,
“Hey, umm… before I do this, I just wanted to let you know,” you began fumbling your words in shame, “boobs don’t… look how you may think they do. Especially not like your magazines.” you finished with a tight inhale. One side of your mouth twitched upward to produce a defeated grin.
“But boobs are just… boobs?” You could see the genuine confusion flash across his features with his reply. His response only pulled a sigh from you.
“Yes. But you see, they get past a certain size and everything just sort of… falls apart?” you attempt. You’re met with no response, his silence urging you to elaborate. “Like, gravity obviously plays a big part in their demise. They’re heavy, and I mean heavy, Eddie. And because of how they fall, how they just drop down, everything is sort of… stretched out. You can see all of the imperfections, all of the pores, the spots and blemishes. And it never ends. They will never be like those blonde pin-up girls in your crusty magazines because they are not real. Real life only leads to disappointment…”
With one final push of air from your lungs you finish your speech with, “You’re more than welcome to see your first pair of real tits Eddie, but I know it’ll only end in you wishing you’d saved yourself the trouble.”
You could see that Eddie’s eyes had glossed over. You knew he had a hard time with you putting yourself down when he cared so much for you. Yet he said nothing. He just stared, directly into your eyes, as though he’d only been allowed to for the first time. With the quilt rustling again, you didn’t have time to see Eddie’s hand. You had only felt it as it made contact with your cheek, his thumb brushing your cheekbone timidly. And that was when he had spoken,
“Hey…,” his smile was gentle, his eyes were even softer, “It’s just me”
And you believe then that you know he would never judge you. Of course he wouldn’t. He wasn’t capable.
“It’s just you,” you parrot back to him, your lips finally turning up once again. He pushes out a soft chuckle from the very back of his throat as his hand comes around for his pinky to flick against the tip of your nose lightly.
“It’s just us, princess…”
That was the final encouragement. You were being silly, you thought. They are just boobs perhaps, as you reach to pull at one strap. You were just simply doing a favour for your closest friend, you justify as one arm is free from its constraints. He seemed to like them enough to gawk at them, you reason with yourself, as you begin to unceremoniously tug at the second strap from underneath you. As you whittled the strap down your arm, the fabric that had previously been shielding your modesty had peeled from your chest and your top had now bunched around your waist.
With Eddie’s focus still maintained on your face, you quickly glanced down to make any adjustments that could be deemed unsightly before peering back up to him and giving him a barely visible nod; he had seen it though. As his attention swiftly flicked back into the position you had caught him in barely 10 minutes ago, you kept your eyes on his face, desperately trying to read any facial expression or slight muscle ticks that could indicate any distaste from the man you were so eager to impress.
He retracted his hand from your cheek and began to shuffle backwards in an attempt to gauge a wider field of view for the gifts you had presented to him. The excitement he exudes was impossible to miss. Almost like a child being told to pick out a new toy of choice. His eyes darted between the pair laid out before him. Like you had explained, your boobs had gravitated more towards the mattress and drooped over your bottom arm rather than sat in the centre of your chest, much like how you imagined Eddie had expected them to be. But there was no indication that he seemed to mind as his tongue darts out to caress over his top lip, his eyes blown in bewilderment.
The sudden change in temperature after being freed from your top had hardened your nipples, making them look slightly more ‘normal’ looking than their usual flattened out state. Eddie’s hand that had previously graced your cheek was now laying flat against the bed between your two bodies, his fingers jolting and twitching slightly. You knew what your next move had to be.
“You can touch them, if you’d like?” you voice, sounding more like a small squeak than actual words. Your nerves had sent a fresh sheet of goosebumps over your skin, your nipples still peaked and aching slightly against the draft in Eddie’s room. His eyes meet your instantly, once again widening as though he was seeking your definitive permission before he gets ahead of himself.
“Are you sure?” followed by an audible gulp, “I mean, I’d love to but… you don’t have to do that”
He was so careful with his actions and his gazes that you knew you’d have to instigate anything further. Lifting your hand to grasp at his wrist that lay on the bed, you slowly spread out his palm and pressed your chest up more before placing his hand directly over the centre of your breast. A sigh of relief that you were not aware you were keeping escaped your lips in the same instance that a croaky groan left Eddie’s, the two harmonising together in perfect synchrony.
The tips of his fingers start to explore the sides of your boob, tracing shapes lightly along the thinner skin there. Allowing his fingers to prod experimentally, he gains enough confidence after a few moments to give his first delicate squeeze. While the action itself was miniscule, it was still enough to elicit a small whimper from you, causing Eddie’s eyes to once again return to yours. With his lips quivering slightly to suppress his satisfaction, his next squeeze was significantly firmer. You watched as, almost in slow motion, the fat of your breast buldged through the gaps of this fingers. Eddie seemed to watch this too, his only reaction being a low “oh, fuck…”
You huffed out a small chuckle before responding, “Everything you expected them to be?” He began to nod vigorously, his curls rubbing against his pillow. Watching his irises dance across your chest had induced many feelings. The most surprising feeling being safety. You knew that in this moment, you could rely on Eddie for anything. He would be cure to all ailments, the cause of all of your laughter. He held the key to your heart, and you knew that he would guard that key with his life. The realisation brings a fond smile to your face. The strongest feeling, however, was enough to wipe the smile straight off your face. That feeling that could not be mistaken for anything else…
You wanted him. You wanted Eddie Munson, your best friend. You desired him, longed for him… burned for him. And just as these revelations had made themselves apparent, Eddie had gently swiped a thumb across your peaked bud causing you to shudder. No, you didn’t want him, you needed him. With your mind now clouded with lust, you reach up a hand to cradle the side of his face, caressing his cheekbone with your thumb. You needed to approach this right. Needed to make absolutely sure that you hadn’t read it wrong, that the line was worth crossing. And as Eddie slowly shifted his gaze to meet yours, his eyes completely blown out and hazy with what you could only recgnise as lust, you had all the confirmation you needed.
But before you could even process what your next move would be, Eddie had already lunged forward and forcefully connected your lips together. You let out a sudden gasp before fervently reciprocating the kiss. His lips were warm, soft. Of course he had to mock you with having the perfect pillowy lips at a moment's notice. Eddie had opened his mouth to deepen the kiss, but had not yet made any intrusion into your own, just enjoying the moment wholly before he could over-extend his actions. You on the other hand had wanted him to push the boundaries; wanted him to explore your mouth, leaving no corner unsearched. Deciding to test the waters you jabbed your tongue into the tip of his, earning yourself a raspy moan, the vibrations making you exert your own breathy whine.
As your tongues danced with one another in perfect cadence, Eddie’s hand that had previously found home on your breast had now slid its way to snake around your waist. Giving it a slight squeeze, he wraps his arm around you to satisfy his only mission of pulling you flush against his body. As your chest collided with his own, noting to yourself that he hadn’t even bothered changing out of his Slayer shirt and sweats from last night's gathering, a deep guttural groan erupted from his chest. You broke the kiss to meet his eyes, swooning at the closer proximity between the two of you.
“You okay there handsome?” you tease, trying to egg on his newfound confidence. It had seemed to work as he mumbled back to you,
“I’ve just always wanted to know how it felt to have the most perfect tits pressed against me,” he rasps out, “so thank you, Sweets”
Rolling your eyes at his dramatic antics, you playfully retort, “God Eds you make yourself sound like such a virgin.” Feeling brave, you decide to hook your thigh over his hips in order to further reduce any remaining space between you. And that’s when you feel it. You feel just how much of an effect your boobs had had on your best friend. You feel just how much Eddie had needed this too. How he yearned for it… ached for it.
He hissed quietly at the contact, one corner of his now swollen lips turning up slightly. With a bit more courage of his own he goaded to you, “If you want me to stop sounding like a virgin so much… then why don’t you change that?”
Plunging straight back into an impassioned kiss, you shift slightly to be able to wrap both arms around his neck, pulling his face impossibly closer as though any slight distance would rip him away from you. With his arm still tucked snug around the expanse of your back, he swiftly rolls onto his back and takes you with him, leaving you laying on top of his frame. Your hips had already unconsciously decided to grind against his crotch, the friction proving to be delicious for the both of you. You lost yourself in the kiss, delving deeper and deeper as though you sought to drown. Alas, you had to force your mind to swim back to the surface, breaking the kiss to ascertain clarity of the situation.
“Eddie, are you sure about this? Is this really what you want to do?” you question. Ending this now would be a devastating outcome. But it would be necessary if there was a possibility that he was unsure, in order to salvage your friendship, if that’s what this still was. He sits up abruptly and shuffles slightly up on the bed to lean across the headboard, taking your body with his as though that was what they were designed to do.
“You're kidding right?” he deadpans, “Fuck yeah, this is what I wanna do! Can’t you feel how insane you’re making me?” You chuckle at that and nod, giving your hips a mischievous wiggle, producing a short exhale from him. He continues, “There is no one else that I could even consider sharing this moment with. Me. You. This… it just makes sense.”
He’s staring straight into your eyes now. The deep brown orbs unravel the very last of your previous reservations. And he maintains his eye contact as he removes his arms from your waist to pry his shirt from his skin that had collected a slight sheen from the anticipation. You didn’t see where his shirt went and neither did he, both of you lost in each other's gaze. Your own hands reach down to find the hem of his sweats, hooking your fingers at his hips and tugging them down along with his boxers until they sit just behind you, collected around his mid thighs.
Breaking the stare, you peer downwards in an attempt to see what you’d be dealing with. You were impressed to say the least. Sure, it wasn’t gonna win any awards, but it was definitely the biggest out of what you’d dealt with before. Enough to make your walls clench around empty space. Enough to make your mouth salivate. Sitting pretty against his abdomen, encased in a thatch of curls. You could see that it was waiting for your next move, twitching at the anticipation.
Quickly glancing up to his face and seeing his confident persona falter slightly, you leaned up to press a chaste kiss to his lips before lowering yourself over the shaft, rocking your hips slowly to create a delectable friction. Eddie was quick to whine out at the feeling of your clothed cunt rubbing salaciously against his bare cock. With your forehead pressed to his, you quickly found your rhythm, each rock of your hips making you pant and whimper at the feeling of him rock hard against your swollen clit.
His hands suddenly shoot to your hips to halt your movements before pleading out, “Please, sweetheart. I can’t take all of this… need to be inside of you, please” The final plea was pathetic, sounding truly fucked out before anything had really begun. Normally you’d be inclined to tease and torture him some more, to use him for your own pleasure. But this was Eddie. Your Eddie. And so it was only right for you to heed his request on demand.
“Do you have a condom?” you inquire, raising your brows slightly to ephasise the urgency.
“Yeah, uhhh shit hang on,” he reaches to his far right to impatiently yank his top drawer open and fiddled with the unopened box before pulling one out and grinning as though he’d just struck gold. Taking the foil from him, you’re brisk in tearing it open and pinching the tip before wrapping a hand around his shaft to begin rolling it down. He whimpers and hisses at the minimal contact, earning an inquisitive look from you.
“What?! It feels good,” he exasperates, “You’re literally touching my dick”
With a light snort you quip, “God baby, you really have no idea…” You admire the way the pet name brings heat to his cheeks, dusting them pink. Lifting yourself gently with your knees, you use your free hand to swipe your panties to the side whilst lining him up with your other hand still grasped around him. Alerted by a quivering exhale from below you, you pause right on the precipice to smile at the beautiful man.
“Hey… it’s just me,” you mirror from earlier, hoping the phrase could provide him with some comfort, “okay? It’s just us” you finish. Waiting for his curt nod as an acceptance, you slowly lower yourself onto him, the stretch immediately welcomed by your fluttering walls. You had let out an elongated hum the further you sank down, whilst Eddie sang a string of curses at the brand new sensations.
Once you had bottomed out you left little time to adjust for the both of you, your need becoming all-encompassing. You’re quick to lift yourself again, stopping to drop back down sharply once almost at the tip.
“Oh my… fuck. Shit, okay” Eddie had become the shell of a man, losing himself completely in the feeling. With a steady pace, not too slow to cause frustration but not too quick to overwhelm him, you begin to bounce. Eddie’s half-lidded eyes were level with your tits, lazily watching them jolt with your movements, his jaw slack. All that could be heard was the slap of your breasts against your chest as well as your arse on Eddie’s hips, and his pitiful moans.
“Ahh, shit I won’t last sweets,” he mutters out, his words slurred in his pussydrunk state.
You slam your hips into his as hard as you could, relishing in the strangled cry of the broken man before you, before once again grinding your hips to meet that delicious friction of your clit against his thick patch of hair. The sensations cause your walls to flutter and grip his cock sporadically, in turn making Eddie whine with each breath he takes.
With this new motion, along with the pathetic display below you, your high was fast approaching. You opted for a combo of grinding your hips together whilst also lifting slightly for Eddie to feel the insatiable drag through your erratically clenching pussy. Feeling his hips begin to thrash up to desperately chase his high, you feel your own suddenly crash through your entire body. The rhythmic pulsing sends Eddie over the edge with you, gripping your hips like a vice as he yells out his strained groans, his voice significantly dropping a few octaves.
With your body going limp against his, you’re only able to muster up enough movement to press an ardent kiss to his jaw before tucking your face into his neck, his curls sticking to your face. Feeling a peck placed on your crown, you’re able to shift your head back slightly so that you’re still leaning on his shoulder, but this time able to gaze at his face. His own face meets yours in the middle. The two of you stay like that for a while, taking in the details of each other’s faces. Eddie is the one who breaks the silence,
“Sooooooo… your tits are nice,” he grins cheekily as his eyebrows wiggle at you. Your eyes immediately widen as you gather the strength to swat at his other shoulder tiredly, but still giggle along at his behaviour,
“Eddie Munson, you really are insufferable”

y/n had been keeping herself busy for the past 3 months. she did everything to keep her mind off of everything. weaving baskets and nets like it was a project to give everyone in the clan, fishing for meals that can have her family full for 5 whole months, collecting and discarding every foraged stuff she could get from her endless walks, riding her ilu further and further beyond the reef just to feel something.
being the oldest of the sully kids was tiring but even being a sister wasn't able to make her feel anything. it was much more numbing than it should be. it made her distant from them.
lo'ak couldn't meet y/n in her eyes. it was like if they looked at each other, the walls they both built would crumble the second their gazes meet. it was like strangers being forced to get to know each other after knowing the horrible crimes they both did.
kiri was very concerned for her older sister. y/n exerts her energy beyond her capacity, does dangerous explorations beyond the reef, and sometimes come back with cuts and bruises, and how she would skip meals to finish all the projects she 'needs' to weave. she was overworking herself and in the 3 months y/n was busy, she had fainted countless times eventually norm and max were called when it kept happening.
tuk missed her big sister so much. she missed collecting pearls by the shore and being carried around while exploring the forest. she was scared at how y/n looked now. from once being a bubbly young adult who was curious and eager to learn something new to a drained-out, almost dead-looking na'vi who would kill people if she saw them looking at her weirdly.
if the three were concerned, imagine how her parents feel. it hurt jake and neytiri to see their oldest overwork herself to distract whatever she was feeling. jake knew how it felt like and he wanted to help his daughter badly. but each time he tried to talk to her, y/n would push him away further and further. she even hissed at him to make her point.
neytiri was angry and concerned. why was her daughter pushing her own mother away when all she wanted to do was help? y/n shouldn't push her away because as her mother, neytiri understands her more than y/n knows, or at least that's what she likes to think.
it was like y/n became a stranger that the sully's just allowed to stay in their home.
Tumblr media
when y/n was fishing for dinner, her mind had been wandering elsewhere. her eyes stared down at the net she held as dread slowly filled her mind. it was like her sight was enlarging in front of her until she hears a distorted voice call out her name. "y/n."
she pulled away from her trance, eyes widening as her breathing became slightly erratic. y/n breathed in deeply through her nose and out through her mouth before her attention went to ao'nung, or what looked like ao'nung by the shore.
"hey there! just a quick update. tsireya is still swimming with the ikrans, who were gliding through the mountains on their bellies, then they ate an eye of a seaweed. now, the ilus and tulkans are fighting for some reason." ao'nung said, he was far away from y/n but somehow she heard everything clearly.
"oh… wow…" y/n says, clearly not understanding a single thing from what the metkayina had just said.
"how's your existential crisis coming along?" he asked so nonchalantly.
y/n was bewildered to say the least. this was the longest time she had held a conversation for how many months now.
"uh… fine?" she answered back but it sounded more like a question. "good!" ao'nung exclaimed back before turning around to leave when,
"ao'nung!" y/n immediately called for him, who turned back around to look. "can… can dreams also have memories?" that sounded wrong. "i mean, can you still have dreams even when you're dreaming?"
"oh, y/n. what else are memories if not dreams themselves?" ao'nung replies, not making as much sense as the question she asked.
"what–" "alright then, more soon!" ao'nung cuts her off before running off to eywa knows where.
y/n was left once again with her thoughts. she turns back to the net she was holding, only for it to be gone. this confused her and when she turned back to where the shore was, the next thing she knew, she was sitting on a giant rock.
"do you blame yourself?" the same distorted voice that called out her name earlier asked. distress filled her veins as she looked to where she heard the voice.
y/n's eyebrows furrowed. "what?" she asked. she saw herself, an exact copy of herself wearing human clothes that norm and max wear with a pen and paper held in her hands.
"well, it's quite common in this situation for a patient to feel a kind of guilt." her copy said, voice distorting more and more.
y/n's mind was in turmoil. "what situation?" she asked. the same dread she was feeling came into full force. her chest became heavy as it caused her to not breathe well.
her copy had this concerned look but the smallest of a smirk appeared on her lips, the following words leaving the copy's mouth. "the accident."
that's when y/n was transported back to the day neteyam had died.
she was there when he was shot through the chest. she knew the bullet was meant for her but he pushed her away and in turn, the faith of death fell upon him.
while the rest of her family had cried, she didn't. instead, she felt numb and angry. no other emotions filled her body except these two. it had helped her kill some sky people and some avatars when she came back to save kiri with her parents but after that, all y/n felt was numbness.
the heavy routine she placed upon herself became the only thing that made her feel something through the numbness she felt. it wasn't enough but at least it was something.
the same distorted voice came back. "it's very common for people to invent blame or create a causality" then the voice became normal in an abrupt manner, and her surroundings turned to norm's lab where he used his avatar and where they were able to breathe normally. "when in reality, it was completely out of your control." norm's voice was soft as he talked to the young na'vi in front of him, who in turn was staring off through the distance.
the forest where she and neteyam grew up, only for her brother to never come back home.

[stepping over the picket fence from my backyard into your backyard, like I’ve learnt anything about Despicable Me or Maxime since my last ask besides it is, indeed, the masc “le Mal” and not the feminine “la Mal”]
Hi, hey, howdy, don't worry about getting to this ask quickly or replying or anything, you take care of yourself, do what you need to do, do what you want to do 💕 I'm going on a thought experiment, a couple of thought experiments. <3
but I was pondering my orb or taking a four hour nap or whatever you wanna call it and like. Is flustered, needy Maxime a new concept???? Not something that’s been greatly considered????? Bc tbh, he always gave me those vibes. For some reason. Like “Oh yeah, of COURSE he’s clingy and embarrassed and blushy and etc etc”. I’m not even sure why I was so sure but it just felt right. 💖 Surely…I wasn’t…projecting any type of …”personal biases” upon himAHEM so sorry, allergies.
That big coat is for hiding and he totally can just, dissappear in there and hide from the world. He could pull the coat up and his head in and hope he can cover how read his face is. Like don't look at him rn, he's so vulnerable and uncomfortable about it bc he's used to being so big and impervious, but also don't go away, bc he likes you sm and this is so nice and he loves being adored. But also it's so much!!!!!!!!! Vicious cycle.
I'm a Blushy Needy Maxime truther. Or liar. I'll leave it to the people who've actually seen the movie to decide. Just the bigger the ego, the harder they fall, thats what I always say. Don't fact check that.
What do you reckon flusters him most? Nice words? Physical affection? Teasing? Gifts? All of the above? I feel like it could be anything. 👀 or maybe it’s none of the above.
Maybe I underestimate him, maybe he's got better composure than I assume, but every set of armor has a weakness! Anyone can get flustered, Maxime can get flustered, and tbh he probably should get flustered. Where there’s a will there’s a way! …Maybe Valentina would help. Either way I KNOW THAT GUY IS GETTING FLUSTERED I know it
Accidentally a little overboard with the teasing and flustering and he gets all in a huff, giving the cold shoulder. You gotta say you’re sorry and wrap your arms around him, and in an ideal world he’d hold strong to his grudge until he felt you’ve paid your dues, but he can’t help but melt into your embrace. He compromises, turning back to you, burying his still-hot face into you and refusing to look at you instead. His arms tight around you, not letting you go even long after you assume all is well. His ire is still on you, you know! You owe him a lot for all that trouble you put him through! And besides, he still feels lightheaded from all this blood rushing to his face. You must let him stay in your soft, supportive embrace for just a moment longer. You wouldn’t turn him out now, would you? After you did this to him?  For shame.
(He is Not intending to let you go anytime soon, he is making up all the excuses)
…hm…I may be talking in circles and not saying much of anything. I also feel like I’ve Greatly Exposed myself today. I gotta go disinfect my ear piercings…I gotta wash my neckties….I gotta refill my mint essential oil diffuser to keep away…the….the bugs…ahem…I gotta make a Pokémon team for Normal Reasons.
I'm also once again coming to you cold, literally standing next to an actual oven for warmth like a Victorian child when my jacket is on a chair literally just one Maxime away. I’ve Got to GO. I CANT KEEP BEING LET OUT OF CONTAINMENT LIKE THIS. Thank you for listening to my TEDTalk/hostage situation. If anyone asks, I was never here. Take care, you’re great <3
[Runs away, jumping fences like I committed a crime here.]

not you dropping an entire three course meal and dessert into my askbox, á la mode!!!!!!! 🙈💖💖 for someone who claims they don't know anything about Maxime, you certainly have put a lot of thought into this message...😉
you know, at the time you sent this ask I would've said that flustered, needy Maxime is a new concept, but we've had an amazing wave of art for him over the past week and there's so much of him being all cute and blushy 🙈🙈💖💖 i think it's that he is so easily angered and hates being called cute…he's total fluster-bait!!! we NEED to make him blush 🥺 AAAAA ohhh my god the idea of him wrapping his coat around himself and hiding is so soft!!!! no no you are SO onto something because Maxime is so horribly arrogant and confident, he's a bully who loves the spotlight and desperately wants attention…so wouldn't it be interesting to finally hit that sweet spot and get him wanting to hide? i really do think overt affection like that would make him curl up, and if you did it in a pointed enough way, his face would light up like a traffic light 🥰💖 i think that Maxime is probably really unprepared for anyone who is able to match his energy. he's looking down at you all heavy-lidded, boasting about himself and casually belittling you, but you shoot back with a well-aimed flirtation and it just. hits him like a truck. his cheeks warm, he starts to stammer. he desperately tries to recover, but he's actually looking for an out because he needs to find somewhere to breathe and quiet his beating heart 👀💖 YOU ARE CORRECT Valentina would so get involved!!! you've probably seen us talk about Valentina a bit before, and our wishes that she'd had more dialogue/character development in the movie…but two things that are very canon about Valentina is that she loves cute things, and she also thinks MAXIME is really cute 👉👈 i am certain that behind closed doors those two lavish all kinds of attention on each other, and Valentina turns Maxime tomato-red every time!!!! squealing no no no please don't be embarrassed i LOVE this!!!! gahhhh i adore that quick possessive flip from being so embarrassed and curling in on himself to it being something where he desperately wants to keep you, he can't let you go…!!! oh, my heart 😳😳😳 it's going to sound so silly given all of the stuff i've made for Maxime and being a selfshipper but i adore him so much that i STILL get so incredibly squirmy even trying to imagine any degree of one-on-one discussion with him, let alone contact…!!!! it's taken me a week to answer this ask for exactly that reason 🙈💖 so THANK YOU for fueling my brain i am going to chew through my hoodie sleeves now 😳😳😳 cackles. are we both sufficiently dead now? did you manage to do all of those convenient excuse-related things (including making the Pokémon team which i would LOVE to hear about)? 👀 it's OKAY lovely, open yourself up!!! there are no rules when it comes to loving characters - who says we can't adore many at once?! 🥰 thank you for always sending the loveliest, most interesting asks!! i've been mulling over this one for a hot minute and it's really, really cheered me up after a tough month, so big big hugs 🫂💖💖

"Ahhh~ We're here!" Your step-sister exclaimed, bursting through the threshold of your home. She leaped towards you uncharacteristically, as if hoping for an embrace. You instinctually wrapped your arms around her thin frame, eliciting a happy squeal from her lips.
"Welcome to my house" you said meekly to your sister and parents. It was the first time you had invited them over officially, and there was no better time than now for Christmas. You got them seated in your living room and made sure they had access to all your appetizers and beverages.
"So what took you so long to have us over?" Your step-mom started. "And how come you missed last Christmas?" You father finished for her.
"Well, truth be told, we've been working on a massive project at work, like literally years long, but we're finally nearly finished. I can't really get into specifics, but it's for the military and it's going to help the ground troops. It's really cutting edge stuff. Literally the reason I went to college for." You were beaming with pride and filled to the brim with want to tell them all about the project, but the only one that seemed to look even semi-interested was your step-sis.
She had never made much of an impression on you when you two were living together, and she was far from any step-sibling fantasy growing up. But it had seemed like she had finally come into her own since moving out on her own. She was still rail thin, for the most part, and her face cleared of all her teenage acne. She HAD developed a rather sizable rear, but you could tell that it was from hard work rather than being inactive... not that you were staring. Looking back now, you realized that you hadn't been keeping in touch with your sis or your family much since you started your job at the military research facility.
"It hasn't been from lack of wanting to reach out to you guys, the job has just been really demanding since the get-go." Your excuse didn't seem to work too well on your parents.
"Well, I missed you and I'm glad you're here now." Your sister chimed. "And look at this big fancy house you live in now thanks to all the hard work you're doing! I bet they're paying you really well too!" Her praise was scratching an itch in your brain that was undeniably inflating your ego a little bit. This was very awkward coming from someone who mostly kept to herself when you two shared a house. She did seem interested in the same research that you were and seemed passionate about your dreams and goals, but she for sure didn't pursue the same dreams or actually understand the science behind it. She was always supportive of you reaching your goals though.
As the night wore on, your parents finally decided to bow out and head home, leaving just you and your sister, facing each other on opposite couches. She leaned in closer. "So tell me," she whispered, as if anyone else was in the house to eavesdrop. "what's really going on with your research? I know when we were younger, all you would talk about was making tech to make 'super soldiers'. but did you actually do it? You did, didn't you? You can tell me." Her words seemed almost manic, as if begging for information. You couldn't hold it back any longer.
"We did! It's so exciting. Like, you don't even know. All my research, all the grants, my whole team, it all came together perfectly as a culmination of my dreams and hard work. What we've created and what it can, in theory do, are just mind blowing." You were beaming and gushing at this point, like a parent, boasing about their child. "I can't wait for you to see the practical applications of it in a few years after it had gone through all the safety testing and red tape." She seemed defeated after hearing that last part. 'It's always the waiting' she thought to herself.
"Whaaaat?" She sighed, audibly protesting. "I don't want to have to wait years to properly see my brother's hard work! I want to see it now!" You sister whined like a child when she wanted to get her way, and now was no exception.
"The tech is solid, and the prototype is finished, but there's still lots of hoops to jump through and safety tests to perform before we can just start putting people in it, silly. I still wish you could see it, but it's just not there yet." Her ears perked up at the thought of her opportunity presenting itself.
"Well clearly I've had too much to drink to be able to drive myself home tonight. I think I just need to spend the night on your couch and then I can go home tomorrow." She turned on her side and laid her head on the arm rest, feigning fatigue.
"I have to work in the morning, so you need to be gone before I am, I don't have any spare keys or anything like that." You told her sternly.
"Maybe I'll just come with you to work then, so you can show me what you've been working on and I can praise you properly." Your sister said, filling your cup with more alcohol. You hadn't noticed, but clearly she was trying to get you drunk.
Morning came in a flash as you could barely hear your alarm from your bedroom. You awoke on the couch, not sure of how the night had gotten away from you. "Morning sleepyhead." Your sister teased. "I couldn't move you from the couch since you're too heavy, so I slept in your bed, I hope you don't mind. Also, since your alarm is going off, I assume that means we have to go to work now." She slid a cup of coffee into your hands as the brain-fog began to lift.
"Huh? We? What are you talking about? I can't take you to work with me." Clearly you hadn't been tough enough on her last night.
"What do you mean? You told me last night that I could come see it! You said you were happy to show it off to me and that no one would be there so there shouldn't be any issues! You promised!" You sister started to huff and pout, crocodile tears filling her eyes. Had you promised her that? It WAS true that you were going to have the lab to yourself.
"Did I really promise? I mean, I guess..." You trailed off, knowing already by the smile growing on her face that you had lost and she had won. Grab your things, let me get ready. It'll be a short day and then I'll treat you to lunch." She giggled to herself at your suggestion of buying her lunch. 'That's right you will. It's working!' She thought to herself giddily.
As you strapped into your car, your sister did the same. Turning the air off and making sure the windows were rolled up as she did. The drive was short, but the air was stifling. You moved to turn the air on, but your sister cut you off, blocking the knob. "I don't want to get chilly. Leave it off." She said it as a command, and your body froze. You nodded your head and reluctantly returned your hand to the steering wheel. 'That was a weird reaction.' You thought to yourself, remarking that as the drive wore on the stale air seemed to get sweeter and sweeter. Suddenly, you became hyper aware of your step-sister. You had never been attracted to her in any physical capacity, but suddenly, her feminine charms seemed to be turned up to eleven. The heat rising in the car and your increased heart rate suddenly made you break out in a sweat, and the outside world seemed to fade to grey as you continued driving to your place of employment on autopilot. All the while, you couldn't help but steal glances at your sister. She wasn't oblivious to this in the slightest as she adjusted her low-cut top, revealing her small amount of cleavage. She rubbed her legs together in her fuzzy leggings that clinged to her just tightly enough to leave nothing to the imagination. You started to pant from the blood boiling under your skin.
"What's wrong bro?" She asked teasingly. "You seem kind of hot and bothered." She put a hand on your thigh and electricity jolted through you. You could feel yourself growing hard only inches away from her hand as thinking became harder and more frustrating.
'Focus on the road' You thought to yourself, unable to vocalize any thoughts out loud between pants and stifled moans. Moans? 'Why am I moaning? What's wrong with me?' As you approached a red light, your step-sister grabbed the back of your head and shoved your face against the nape of her neck. As you breathed in her heavly scent, you were sent nearly over the edge.
You could feel your member surge longer, reaching maximum length. Your heartbeat throbbed through it, resonating at the tip, and you felt ready to burst at any minute. Suddenly, your sister pulled you away and turned your head back to the road. "It's green, dummy." She said cheekily. "Are we almost there?" You nodded, trying not to dwell on the fact that you were almost there in more ways than one.
Finally you pulled up to the facility, the gate cam scanning your registered plate and swinging open. You pulled into your parking spot and finally were able to shut the car off, throwing the door open and clamoring out for some fresh air. As you took deep breaths out in the open, you could start to feel the fog in your mind lifting ever so slightly. You were just starting to regain some composure when your step-sister came from behind and put her arms around you, forcing herself too close to you and refilling your lungs full of her alluring aroma.
"Let's go inside, it's chilly out here." You nodded, your eyes clouding over and her control over you reasserting itself. You flashed your card at the door and it clicked open. Your sister opened the door and ushered you through. You shambled after her with her leading you by the hand. It seemed like she knew exactly where she was going. Suddenly you found yourself in the testing room with the tech safely on display in its glass case. Right in the center of the room was a jet black suit that looked like latex. Although very unassuming and more than slightly lewd looking, this was the culmination of you and your team's hard work.
Upon seeing the black suit in the case, Belle immediately dropped your hand and sprinted up to it, placing her hands and nose right against the glass. The suit seemed to shimmer and shiver in response. "So while you're getting everything ready, how's about you tell me what exactly this is and how you made it?"
You cocked your head to the side before trying to shake out more of the fog that was clouding your thoughts. "Get what ready? I'm still trying to figure out how I agreed to bring you here. And what happened to me on the way over." You took this chance to slump into your chair at your control desk and take in some more air away from Belle, who was already quickly rushing over to you.
"What do you mean?" She said in her whiny voice as she perched herself on your lap, throwing her arms around you and placing her neck, once again, in range of your nose. "You told me last night that you'd bring me here and show me your lab and the tech and tell me how it works! You even told me that I could try it out!"
That didn't sound right to you. You wouldn't compromise your project that hadn't even been tested on humans yet. You especially wouldn't risk harming your step-sister...and yet. "Did I say that?" You asked, half slurring your words while reentering your trance."
"That's right. You told me that I could be the first super soldier and that you'd make your little sister grow big and strong." She pouted and snuggled against you, rubbing her scent on you and forcing another wave of arousal to surface. You could feel your bulge pressing into Belle's thigh, and she giggled knowing that she had you back under her spell. "Be a good boy for me and start getting it set up while you tell me all about your project." She whispered in your ear, her hot breath sending chills through your body. She got off you then and walked back over to the case as you turned to your control panel and started pushing buttons and entering codes.
"So basically we found this organism. It's unlike anything from our dimension." you began, telling a speech that you'd been rehearsing for months just for this big reveal "So we theorize that this thing came through a Mandela hole, which basically is a crack in our dimension that leads to a parallel one...but that's not important." As you were speaking, your sister quickly got naked, leaving her clothes in a messy pile on the floor. You were far too engrossed in your trance to notice. You pulled a lever and the glass of the case receded into the ceiling, leaving the suit exposed to your sister's quick clutches. She immediately grabbed it and started to put it on while you continued your procedures.
"So we quickly found that this organism was still tethered to its home dimension and that by binding it to some cutting edge technology, we could channel that energy into a host that the organism more than willingly bonded with." Your sister didn't seem all that interested in the science of it all as she was sliding into the suit that seemed to vibrate and slither further onto her.
"Why is this thing so tight if it's meant for big strong men to put on?" She asked, trying wriggle herself into it. You instinctively pushed a button that sent an electrical pulse through the tech, causing it to immediately expand and envelop Belle, covering her just like an inorganic body suit would. This, however, was not inorganic and seemed to quiver and purr in the satisfaction of being united with other living tissue. "That's better!" Your step-sister squealed, checking herself out and feeling herself up.
You pressed a few more buttons and twisted a big red dial as the screen lit up with your step-sister's biometrics. The screen displayed her vitals and the organisms output, showing just a measly tenth of a percent. As the suit fully bonded to your sister, she made an uncomfortable noise. "OW! It feels like i just got poked by needles all over my body and...and...oh. Now I feel better. Now I feel...kinda good."
"I just need to...need to...Why am I doing this?" With the suit covering your sister's skin, the scent in the air began to quickly fade. You finally looked away from the panel long enough to realize that your sister was fully bonded to the suit. "Shit, Belle. What the fuck? We need to get you out of that right now!"
Tumblr media
"I think it's a little late for that, bro...mmmph. I can feel my body being fed that energy that you were talking about. It's ever so slowly entering my skin through those little needles that I got pricked by. And it's just making me feel so good." You could see now that the suit that had coated your sister was pulsing as it was being fed and, in turn, feeding her, forcing its host to absorb the energy that was being transmitted. You looked from her to the screen. All vitals were improving rapidly. 'This is valuable data,' you thought to yourself. 'but this is way too dangerous to continue.'
"I think we might need to pump the breaks here, sis." You said, trying to be the voice of reason. "You got to try it out. You're super healthy and strong now already according to the vitals monitor. It looks like you're already way stronger than me judging by the muscle density scanners."
"Is that so?" Your sister said, enthusiastically. She sauntered over to you, making sure to sway her wide hips with every step, the fluorescent lights of the lab creating a sheen against the body suit as she did. She was suddenly sitting in your lap again. The suit being on her combined with her increased muscle density made her noticeably heavier than when she sat on you only minutes before. But it was more than that. Her whole form seemed larger. This was a theoretical side effect of the tech, but you still were in awe of getting to see and feel it first hand. "You know..." She started, putting a hand on your chin and forcing eye contact. "I worked really hard to save up the money to get the pheromone concoction that I used on you last night to get you here. Sneaking it into your drink and downing the control agent myself. Forcing you to be in the car with me on the way over to make you even more susceptible to it. It wasn't cheap and it wasn't easy, but it got me here. It's just a little hiccup that my body stopped pumping it out when I bonded with this suit." She gestured to the pulsing blackness that coated her body, running her hands up and down herself as she grabbed two handfulls of her tits. "God, even these feel bigger and better. You have no idea how long I've fantasized about this. ever since you told me about your dreams of making big strong soldiers. Maybe even before that. I've always wanted to be bigger. And now you're making it happen!"
She readjusted herself in your lap as she stalled you with her speech while the energy continued to flow into her. "I can feel my body changing by the minute. becoming more and more and more and...mmmm...I'm so much stronger than you now and growing bigger and stronger still...I could just make you do what I want now." For the first time in your life, you had become genuinely afraid of what used to be your little step-sister.
"Belle, let's talk about this. It's true that you're bigger and stronger than me now, but that's enough right? How tall are you now? Six? Six and a half feet maybe. That's huge. And your muscles are so tight and toned now that-
"I know!" She cut in, flexing her muscles which rippled and defined themselves against the suit as she did. "I can FEEL how strong I'm getting! It's amazing! This truly is marvelous technology that would have revolutionized modern troop warfare. But it's mine now. And it feels way too good to stop. And your definition of huge and mine are way different. So I need you to be a good brother and turn up the juice. I'm tired of being drip fed this energy. I need you to flood me with it." With that, she got off your lap and skipped back to the center of the room, before twirling around to face you. "And before you even think about trying to say no, just know that even if you were to shut off the whole machine now, it's too late. I'm warning you. I'm so much bigger and stronger than you that you wouldn't have a chance, and I would be far too angry to hold myself back. So it's really your only option. I'm counting on you bro."
"Right..." You uttered, completely defeated by your newly monstrous sister. 'the fucking pheromones' you thought to yourself as you started to play with the controls again. 'that's how she got in my head and made me give her everything she wanted. I wonder if I have any other options here.' You looked at all the controls and came up with only too paths to choose. Path one would open the flood gates like your sister asked and make her an extra bulky bitch in no time, side effects be damned. Option two would be to reverse the energy flow and drain all of her new power back into the organism. That option came with too many risks to calculate. What would happen to the organism with that much energy in it? Would your sister return to how she was, or would she waste away? You were running out of time, and all the while your sister was still being pumped, albeit ever so slowly, full of energy. "Ok, fine. You win. I'll turn up the output. I'll make you stronger. I don't know what else will happen to you though...we haven't even run simulations on this kind of output. Are you sure you don't want to stop?"
"Come on! I need it! Hurry!" She was growing more and more impatient by the second and you didn't want her to end you, so you started to type in codes ignore warning screens and type in more codes to get to the most advanced settings.
"Here goes." You said, voice quivering with fear, and admittedly a little excitement, about your project being used to its full potential. You cranked up the dial from one tenth of a percent to ten percent all at once.
"Oh fuck!" Belle cried out, falling to her knees and then lying down on her back. She immediately started to convulse as the suit pulsed and purred around her, pumping massive amounts of energy into her already enlarged form. "I feel like I'm going insane! There's so much being forced into me! It feels amazing! Umph! Bigger!" You watched as your sister began to pulse larger and larger with each pulse of the suit. As you looked back at the screen, the instruments for her vitals were completely nonsensical. She was literally off all the charts and growing fast. eight, ten, twelve feet went by as she moaned in pleasure. "More more more! Turn it up higher! I can take it!" You cranked the dial to twenty percent and your step-sister doubled in size, orgasming as she did. She felt herself gush hard, her whole cunt clenching as her clit rubbed against the suit while she bucked her hips in ecstasy. Every part of her seemed more sensitive in the most pleasurable way. She felt herself up reveling in the sensation of her nipples protruding against the suit. She rubbed her fingers over them and felt them grow even harder in response. As she twisted and pulled and squished them against her already bigger breasts, she could feel them swell under her fingers, growing faster than the rest of her and evening out her hourglass figure. "That's it! I love this! I feel like I'm ascending! Like I'm finally going to be as big as I've always meant to be!" As your sister became more in tune with her growing body, she could feel the pheromone concoction still in her system. Forcing tiny holes in the neck of the suit to open, she told her body to produce more of the pheromone, and it complied. Immediately, you were overwhelmed.
"Turn it up. All the way." Your sister commanded, still writhing on the ground in growing bliss between constant climaxes. unable to resist, you cranked the dial all the way. Rapidly running out of room, Belle ballooned up to an impressive eighty feet and exploded out of the building, her giant suited foot shielding you from the rubble as it plowed right through your control panel, destroying the connection to the suit. She hardly noticed outgrowing your lab, but the feed of energy being severed left Belle with a sense of longing. She lifted her foot and the surrounding debris away from you before scooping you up into her hand. "Fuck you're tiny." She said, standing up to her full height of one hundred feet. "Everything is tiny. But it could be smaller. I could be bigger. I should be." Using her connection to the suit, free of tech, she reached out to try and find a source of energy. She could feel something in the distance, outside the city. "Where did you say this thing came from? A Mandela hole? I think I can sense one. I want to drink from it." Your big step-sister opened a hole in her suit exposing her vast cleavage and dropped you in. "Lets go 'little bro' I wouldn't want you to miss the show." She began walking towards the source of energy, all the while her suit purring and hungry, just like its host.

Pile 1
Death, 7 of Swords, 5 of Cups reversed
(TW: codependency)
Who are they?
This is someone from your past, whose relationship with you has come to an end or currently in the no-contact state. You could be the one who have walked away from them. This might due to objective reasons like one of you moved away to pursue their career. But I feel like it has more to do with how you might have crashed; you no longer saw them as a part of the future you want to have for yourself. The other way round can also be true, and you could both outgrow this connection. The end or halt of this relationship/attachment opened a new phase in your life.
What is their current energy?
They're coping hard in your absence. They might be stalking your social media, and/or trying to get any news about you and your current life through the few mutual friends you guys share. On the other hand, they also try hard to prove to themselves and everyone around them, that they're doing fine on their own even without you. They would try to engage in the same activities/commitments, that they used to have with you, with someone else, just to fill in the emptiness. For the few of you, this person could be a parental figure or a caregiver, who is suffering from the empty nest syndrome. In any case, they based most of their identity with the connection you two had, and is struggling to be something more after you left.
What is their message?
I feel a lot of regretful energy coming from them. They want you to know whatever action and words they put out back then that might have hurt you, it came out at the heat of the moment and they are still regreting it. There're things out of their control, and probably a lot of miscommunication. But, they want you to know they might have been mad/disappointed/ashamed, but never of you. Though, they fear they would sabotage the relationship further if they try to come forwards too strong. So as of now, they still keep the distance and watch your move. They just hope you won't blame/hate them too much for the past.
Pile 2
3 of Pentacles, Ace of Pentacles, The Magician
Who are they?
This person could be a colleague at your work place, a classmate or your partner, with whom you're building a life with. In any cases, you guys have been together for a while, long enough to know how to work and play together as a team. For some of you, this could be someone with whom you have collaborated on a more personal (hobby-ish) project long time ago, and still more or less stay on each other's contact. If you are a freelancer artist/writer/ect., this could be one of your customer lol. They stand out because a, they could also be your friend b, they're from the industry/the same fandom as you, the project you took on for them was super fun and successful.
What is their current energy?
Oh this person has some big idea cooking in their mind. They could be just freed from a duty/commitment and they are up to work on something with you, using what they learned/earned from the previous gig. They could have already started it and wanted to invite you in the team for your insight/magic touch. They're not so good at keeping good news secret, so you probably hear from them soon, if not already 🤭
What is their message?
Oh my, this person really looks up to you with spark in their eyes. To them, you're the specialist, a guru friend they can always trust to consult when it comes to this particular field. They want you to take pride in your work and be confident! It hurts them whenever you talk shit about yourself or sell your services cheaply. They want you to know they are always there for you. You can just ask and they would give their sword. Otherwise they would keep away from involving from your work. They are enthusiastically respect your creativity independence and would hate to come off as patronizing/overbearing.
Pile 3
Page of Wands reversed, Queen of Cups, 3 of Swords reversed
Who are they?
This person possesses a youthful or childlike energy. They could be a younger sibling, a child in your family, a junior at your school or workplace. They could simply be a few years younger than you or personality-wise they're just a carefree and/or stubborn type. For some of you it could even be your pet! Another clue I picked up on is they could be going through their rebellious phase at the moment lol
What is their current energy?
Their inner landscape has been expanding in depth as of late. They tend to spend more time for introspection, figuring out their feelings, dreams, and personal values. Because of this, they could appear moody, sensitive and socially less available to others during this time. Like, they would sneak away from people when there's a chance, and would take on solo trip without telling their friends like they usually would. Even though their closed door seem worrisome to most people, their mind is tranquil and they would be happier if people don't make such a big fuss about their absence and return. Just have fun when I'm there, so I heard.
What is their message?
If you guys fought recently, take this as their informal apologies. They can surely do better, but you know how it's harder to say sorry and thank you and I love you to the closest people in our life. On the other hands, they can totally picked it up whenever you're upset, may it be because of them or something else unrelated. Once again, they don't really know how to comfort you and fear that they will only make things worse. So when they see you're in bad mood, they would rather get out of your way and give you space than confronting you be like "What's up?". But it doesn't mean they don't care. Tbh they seem like a big confused puppy whenever it happens. It would be nice if someone could extend an oliver branch so that both parties can talk and clear out misunderstandings and confusion. That person is likely to be you because as I mentioned above, the emotional maturity of the other isn't quite as evolved to take initiatives.
Pile 4
The Sun, King of Cups, 10 of Cups reversed
Who are they?
Think of the most important people in your life right now (yes, pets count), this is one of them. If you believe in that term, this person is one of your soulmates. You just feel whole and safe and the happiest when they're around. Another way to recognize this kind of connection is, you never feel drained spending time with them, in the contrary, you fill each other battery up. For a few of you, they could be someone who is still looking after you from the other side.
What is their current energy?
They are in a state of great emotional stability, or like we say, their cups are full. They're at a place where they can easily sync in with other people, and give out of their compassion, patience and generosity. They're secure, in their lance, flourishing, you name it lol. Their pleasant energy would neutralize the negativity in a room; during this time, you will always see them act out of kindness and love, and be the bigger person in common conflicts.
What is their message?
"We already have everything we need" is the most prominent message that comes through. I think they just want you to take more time to rest and enjoy little things in life with them. They could be sad/worry for you when you were working too hard towards a goal, that you don't stop to fully celebrate your achievement or neglect your mental health. But at the same time, they know how this particular goal means to you, that's why they said nothing. They never want to stand between you and your goal, and would do anything they know to support you on this path. So instead, they make sure other aspect of your daily life is well taken care of. But yeah, there's a little blue like they wish you could just be more gentle with yourself at times. Like what's the point of all the hard work, if you won't let yourself win and enjoy the fruit?

Deja ya de llorar
Shoto x GN! Reader
You've had a very bad day, and you're very tired, and you have a very cute husband.
little angst/very comfort, mostly fluff ^*^
Tumblr media
The front door swung open harshly before it was more gently clicked into place. The decoration hung on the outside knocking back in protest.
You violently kicked your shoes off, not bothering to put them neatly back in their place in the shoe cubby that rested against the wall. Trying to get on with the settling down process, you went through the motions of hanging up your jacket, not noticing that you missed your mark and instead, it fell miserably to the floor.
"I'm hooome." You sighed, barely loud enough to be heard from the front door to the kitchen. You then limply tripped over the side, flopping down hard on the couch, squishing your face on the plush cushions.
There was silence in the house, no sounds of music or the TV playing. Most notably, no sound of your husband. Usually, he was out in the dining room doing papers or just otherwise bumbling around the house. Sometimes he'd meal prep or work out or even just be doing some D.I.Y project. But today, there seemed to be an absence of him. Which, wasn't a big deal, both of you were heroes, having met each other in class 1-A. Ever since you two had just been inseparable, clung together like magnets. Still, he made no mention that he would be working late.
You sighed and flipped over to your back, and took your phone out of your pocket. Lazily, you dialed his work phone and waited for him to pick up.
"This is Icy-Hot. I'm not available right now, reach either my assistant, partner, or me at a later time. I apologize for the inconvenience." The familiar one-toned voice you had gotten used to bleated back to you, and the phone beeped to leave a message. You made a confused noise before moving over to his personal phone number, the one that not many people had.
Just as the call was going to send you to voice mail, he picked up. "Hello? Is everything alright?" Shoto's voice called out to you, concern lacing his voice.
"No," You sighed, exhaustion taking over you slowly, unable for you to fight it much longer, "You weren't home and I was just making sure you were alive."
He chuckled, "Well I am don't worry. I'm on my way home soon, just another big battle in Tokyo, and you know how traffic can be." He sounded happy and content, and jealousy filled you at his ease.
"I hope it went well, and I'm glad you're safe. I love you, get home soon."
"It did, I'll tell you more at home. I love you, I'll see you soon."
The call disconnected, leaving the house in silence again. Suddenly, without even prompt or major reason, tilled filled your eyes and you were left breathless.
You were so tired, your body and mind so worn down that everything was moving too fast for you to keep up. Your eyes stung all the time, and your joints ached, body screaming in protest for running on fumes for so long.
You also had so many hard cases this month, a tsunami had hit the east, and because of the shortest of pros, you had been sent down there to mitigate the damage. The things you saw only added to the pile of horrors that kept you up at night. Lost little girls, old men torn apart, and young men crying in the middle of the street would haunt you for years to come. The paperwork and reconstruction that took weeks to finish, on top of commission work and public work, you were left beaten and bruised.
You cried yourself to sleep on the couch, too tired to change out of your civilian clothes or even move yourself to a comfortable position to find even a restful sleep.
___________________________________________
When you woke up, crusty, thirsty, and hungry, you found yourself in your shared room. Pictures of you and Shoto decorated the space, along with your different families and friends. Books, papers, and other small trinkets littered the room. When you came home after being away from a work trip, it always made your heart warm and fuzzy at your cozy living space, knowing you shared it with the person you loved the most.
You heard soft music from the downstairs, and slowly you drifted out of your bedroom. (You were also pleasantly surprised to find yourself in soft pjs.) Peeking out, a smiled crawled on your face at the sight you were blessed with.
Shoto, still in his hero outfit, was swaying softly to a soft song that you recognized, Hijo del corazón. While doing so he was making your favorite comfort meal. Both of you always had each other's comfort meals prepped and ready to go in case the others needed it.
"Have I ever told you how much I love you?" You said sleepily, hooded bagged eyes looking at him with ease.
Shoto turned to you, jumping a little in surprise before he completely melted under your gaze.
"Yeah, you tell me every day you love me, plus, I get a daily reminder you do every time I wash my hands." He tapped to the ring on his finger, the pale moon gem that was the centerpiece. The weight of your sun ring reminded you of both your vows, in sickness and in health.
"True, but I super love you." You walked closer to him, nuzzling against him while he kept busy.
"I love you, hard day?" He asked, and even though his eyes were on the food, you knew you had his full undivided attention.
"Hard month more like it. I'm just glad we're almost done though." You sighed, dragging your feet to grab a glass of water. Your heart filled with warmth when you saw your respective bachelor party cups.
"I'm glad, I miss you at home." Shoto said almost pouting.
"Just a little bit more recon, and a smidge more paperwork and I'm back to a normal work schedule. What about you though?" You asked, eyeing him up and down with a raised eyebrow.
"What do you mean?" He turned to you, looking at you with his own raised eyebrows while he carried the food to the table.
"You're still in your hero suit, you didn't change back at the agency." You said that the answer was the simplest thing in the work. In truth, it kinda was.
"Oh," He looked down at himself, embracement suddenly flooding his cheeks. "I was just in such a rush to get home, I guess I didn't change." He started to eat with you.
"Why the rush? I'll always make it home." Or try to, at least.
"I missed you, plus, I have a surprise." Shoto suddenly got up, walking over to the kitchen to grab a fancy-looking velvet box.
"Sho' I don't mean to break your heart, but we've already gotten married." You laughed quietly at your own joke, turning in your spot to follow him.
"No not that. I know you don't really like jewelry, but I saw it and I just had to give it to you." He had you the box gently, placing it in your awaiting hands.
You looked at him before tenderly peeling open the box, and a gasp escaped your lips when you saw what was inside.
It was a beautiful golden heart-shaped locket. The design it had was stunning, on the front was an open sort of caged design, and you could see the inside of the locket through it. Around the mini heart-shaped window was a winged sort of design with small bridges on the side. On the back were two interlocked hearts surrounded by leaves and little tiny snowflakes.
When you peeled it open, it was your guy's wedding pictures. But it wasn't one where either of you were fake smiling. Instead, it was you ugly laughing with your eyes closed and leaning toward Shoto. While he had the widest grin ever looking at you so tenderly it made tears spring to your eyes.
"Oh Sho', it's beautiful. Thank you so much, I love it." You stood up to bring him into a tight hug. He hugged you twice as hard, resting his head on your shoulder.
"Of course, I hoped you'd like it." He whispered.
"I love it, thank you so much for being here for me." You sighed into his arms, the warm embrace he protected you into would always bring you inner peace.
God you loved this man, and you knew he loved you ten times as much.

You’re going to draw attention, looking like that.”
You look up at the animatronic towering in front of you. For some reason, the comment offends you. Could be the fact that so far any passerby walking past has only spared fleeting glances your way, before looking up at your new friend and scurrying off with fear in their eyes.
In a way, you get it. Twice your height and cutting quite the imposing figure in his suit, Eclipse is no one to sneeze at.
Your nose still tickles.
“Are you sure anyone is even going to see me standing next to you?”
Got him. There’s a twitch to his expression as his fingers curl around nothing but air, before he abruptly rips them down to his side. Just as suddenly he turns, walking down the sidewalk.
You have to take two steps for each one of his. The most annoying part of it all is keeping your grin down.
Eclipse glares down at you just as you round the block. His eyes only narrow further, so perhaps you’re not doing that good of a job, hiding your amusement.
“You’re still here.”
… Where else would you be? He started walking, so you followed. Did he expect you to just shrug it off, and let him leave? Or maybe it’s wishful thinking, him hoping you’d turn out to be an apparition only. Too bad you have to disappoint him.
You blink, and tilt your head.
“Why wouldn’t I be?”
Again with the furling fingers. It’s not a really reassuring gesture, but mostly you wonder if this time has stress toys. Eclipse sure looks like he could use one. Some, actually - multiple spares, just in case.
The thought only intensifies when one hand wraps around your head, keeping your head fixed to where he leans down into your vision. While you’d love to say you’re fully focused on that probably faked cheerful smile,
That hand is big.
“I have work to do. I won’t babysit you.”
You pat the hand on your head, and it twitches.
“Lucky for you, I’m not a baby. You said you’d help me.”
“Because you were freaking out and drawing attention. Speaking of which, you calmed down really fast.”
The words come out in a snarl, and his grip tightens again. At this rate you’re going to get a headache. That won’t help you clear his suspicions, so you do your best to project nonchalance with your shrug.
“I got distracted. Not every day you meet a sentient animatronic after all.”
You look around, as much as your limited range lets you, and immediately realize that he won’t be able to sign off on that. There’s three other animatronics out and about, and that’s just from a quick glance around the busy street.
So you have to amend your statement.
“Well. I suppose that no longer applies.”
The pressure from your head lifts as Eclipse straightens, his optics covered by his fingers curled into claws. He tilts his face up, and just like that you can’t see his expression anymore. Quietly, he mumbles.
“Why did I agree to this?”
You’re not sure if you were supposed to hear that, but you decide to reply anyway. First with a hum, earning you another glare, and then you grin. Eclipse drops his hand again, not looking even an ounce happier. You’re not sure it would have made much of a difference - he’s quite a lot of ounces.
So you end up smiling for two.
“Because I’d go around and tell everyone I met you first. Think the police would enjoy my crazy story?”
For an animatronic with a fixed smile, he looks awfully close to having bitten into his first lemon ever. But then, for just a second, his expression shifts - too bad you can’t read it at all. His pupils flit to the side, then narrow back down at you, and he looks as hard as ever. Moment over, then.
“You are my punishment.”
You blink, unimpressed.
“You’re awfully sure you deserve to be punished.”
Ignoring your comment entirely, he turns to look past you. When he speaks up again, his tone radiates eternal suffering, and you bite your tongue before you comment on that, too.
“I know where you can stay. There’s someone who owes me a favor.”
He starts walking again, and you follow with a dreary sigh.
“Oh no, I landed in a time of ominous favors.”
Golden eyes with black pinpricks glare back at you for a moment, and then Eclipse accelerates. You have to actually hurry now to keep up.
“Word of advice, if you want to last here for more than a day, learn to keep your mouth shut.”
And so you do, if only because your sense of self preservation isn’t quite that eroded. Well, maybe also because jogging after him is enough of a workout, and you prefer not announcing that via embarrassing wheezing. Without lungs he sure has it easy. That, and legs as long as you are tall. You’re barely more than a tripping hazard for him.
That’s an impulsive thought you better don't indulge.
Instead you try to focus on everything around you, taking in all the sights without falling behind too much. Just once do you stop to stare at a very fancy couple and their just as fancy car, and get lost a little bit in the excitement they radiate.
And maybe the old car. Do you know the brand? Could you sneak back to steal a glimpse at the emblem? It’s a rolling death trap, even more so than the cars you’re used to, but if it doesn’t look cool…
Eclipse walks on, and when you look, he just rounds a corner. He nearly left you behind before. You hate running, but needs must. Rushing after him you nearly run into him - seems he waited after all.
He scowls, grumbling a quick “Hurry up,” and moves on.
This time you don’t let yourself get distracted. Getting lost in a city out of your time, without money or ID or anything else to your name isn’t your idea of a good time. Your little threat earlier was little more than a bluff - involving the police isn’t an option you actually want to consider.
When Eclipse takes a sharp turn into a building you stop for just a moment, looking it up and down. Just a little shop, from the looks of it, selling a variety of things.
The bell rings when you enter, and both Eclipse and the human shopkeep turn to you. The man frowns, and you instinctively smile - it probably does little to help.
“Hi!”
He turns to Eclipse again, thick brows furrowed.
“For her?”
“Do you have a room or not?”
Your smile turns into a small grimace at the hostility in Eclipse’s tone, but at least it’s not directed at you.
It gets worse, because the shopkeep does not seem to have a sense of self preservation.
“Since when did you fancy…”
Apparently unsure how to describe all of you, he makes a vague circular gesture your way, and what little you can see of Eclipse’s expression does not look happy. Maybe you can defuse the situation just a bit.
“Oh, we’re just friends!”
Again, four eyes are on you. Eclipse’s optics are dark with thin, golden halos staring at you in disbelief. The shopkeep glances from you to him before tensing, and promptly making his escape into the back.
“... I’ll go grab a key.”
You spare him a glance before looking back to Eclipse, who is currently strangling the air where you presume he would wish your neck to be.
“Why would you say we’re friends?”
It’s hushed, as much as you assume he can lower his voice. The result is more of a squeaky rubber chicken toned stage whisper, and your little smiley grimace twitches.
“Would you have preferred whatever he was assuming?”
Somehow you don’t think him “fancying” you is in any way the better alternative. You don’t really look like someone anyone in this day and age would fancy.
… At least your skirt reaches past your knees.
Eclipse’s fingers curl further, clenching into fists.
“I’d prefer to not be associated with you at all! I don’t have friends!”
That was not what you expected. You blink, scowling as well now.
“... Weird flex but okay.”
His voice shoots up half an octave in strain.
“What?”
There’s a small sound from the counter, and a stiff shopkeep slides a keyring with a small plated keychain and two keys over the counter. The way he keeps avoiding both your gazes makes you think he caught a bit too much of that conversation.
“Second floor, third room on the right. You still know the address?”
The keyring disappears in Eclipse’s hand, and then his coat pocket.
“Yes.”
From his voice, you'd think the furious voice crack never happened. You definitely don't trust like that.
And then the storm is coming your way. You scramble out of the shop, the doorbell ringing again, and not a second too early. Eclipse ducks back out right behind you, dark eyes still trained on you. For a second you duck, not exactly in fear, but certainly preparation. For what, you don’t want to think about.
But then Eclipse straightens, closing silicon lids over his eyes, and when he opens them they shine in gold again. He squints at you, and somehow that smile is much more terrifying than the one before.
“Let’s go.”
For a few blocks, you follow in silence, but then your curiosity gets the better of you (and your self preservation). Though a bit of it, the part you would like to not acknowledge, also is the looming realization that following a pissed off animatronic you have known for a few hours to an unknown tertiary location is currently your safest bet moving forward.
Can’t have you thinking about that.
“Do you really have no friends?”
You barely hear his reply over the noise of the street and his grumbling tone.
“What did I say about keeping your mouth shut?”
Well, the energy is certainly unmistakable, so you don’t think you’re wrong with your guesstimated perception. Who even needs to process full sentences? Definitely not you, as proven by your entire life so far.
Even though he can’t see, you shrug.
“That’s kinda sad, dude. Friends are cool - nifty. The bees’ knees even. The cat’s meow?”
Your brain sifts through months of fluctuating interests to scrounge up the brief interest in dated vernacular, with limited results. You’re not even entirely sure you’re in the right decade with those.
Eclipse still doesn’t grace you with even a look.
“Stop talking. Somehow, understanding you is worse.”
You press your lips together tightly, keeping down another snappy comment. Antagonizing him is not in your favor, and you need to remember that.
He doesn’t make it easy though.
You’re busy studying the old fashioned traffic lights when you notice the motion in your periphery. Eclipse looks away as soon as you look up, rather paying attention to the lights himself. At least it’s too busy for jaywalking, and even he has to wait. Spares you from having to run after him, but not the conversation he picks up again.
“I have a reputation to uphold.”
While you have no doubt that nothing about you is helping him with that, you also don’t know why he’s bringing it up. Are you supposed to apologize? Or -
The friends. He’s talking about having no friends. A fact which is apparently part of his broody loner reputation.
Your realization must show on your face, because Eclipse spares you another glance, and his expression flattens immediately.
“Don’t say it.”
You grimace, and look back to the lights. As soon as it turns red, you’ll have to hurry before the traffic rounding the corner gets its go. Pedestrians are car fodder still.
“I mean, you’re thinking it, I’m thinking it, I really don’t have to.”
Unfortunately, your shrug gets interrupted by Eclipse wrapping his hand across your shoulder, and dragging you across the street. You didn’t even notice the light turning red. The fumes of the last car are still whirling in the air, and you cough through that cloud of exhaust. Either he’s really impatient, or pissed off at your comment that you technically didn’t verbalize - maybe both.
He lets go as soon as you reach the other side, fortunately all in one piece, and at worst only slightly bruised from the fingers digging into your flesh. You rub the spots where his grip was tightest for just a moment before you have to hurry after him again.
At least you wait until you’re right behind him to pry a bit more.
“Seriously though, is your reputation just ‘loner who hates everyone’? People can’t do everything on their own, that’s madness!”
Eclipse stops abruptly, stepping back and startling you into a jump. His eyes are dark again, the golden rings within blazing.
“Not everyone. And what I can’t do, I arrange through contracts and favors. Friends are nothing but a pretty lie, none of it means anything.”
Well, good to know the guy really never had a friend. You’re curious about the emphasis - but right now you want to focus on a different point to make.
“So you do rely on other people! You know, sometimes coworkers can become friends too.”
The static crackle coming from above sounds awfully close to a choke, except then… He’s laughing. It’s not bad, honestly even kind of nice, except you have no clue what the joke is - which means it’s most likely you.
At least his eyes are golden again.
“No, absolutely not.”
You blink. Okay, maybe his coworkers suck, too. What do you know? But still, you huff - you’re not done yet.
“You know the saying ‘the blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb’?”
The last of his lingering amusement seems to drain from him, a frown taking over. There’s a dark flash in his optics, just for a second, gone before you’d be concerned. Doesn’t mean his expression is in any way happy when he leans down just a bit. No, his grin is bitter, and you still have to crane your neck uncomfortably - you’re pretty sure he just wants to loom.
You wonder if there’s a craft store nearby. He might strangle you for real, but it would be a hilarious practical joke.
“If you haven’t noticed, I don’t have blood to mingle.”
Bonafide snarl, once again. You only cock an eyebrow.
“You do know how a metaphor works, right?”
As suddenly as he stopped before, Eclipse now straightens. Somehow, you’re glad you’re not shorter - he looks at you like you’re a particularly nasty bug, and you’re very squishy. Your still aching shoulder speaks for that.
In your endless wisdom, you decide to stick out your tongue and blow a raspberry.
“I’m just saying. You can choose a whole lot, and good friends are part of that.”
“I choose none. Let’s get you settled, before I do something you will regret.”
The remainder of the trek you stay silent. You’ve poked the bear enough for now - especially considering that this bear is very tall and very sharp, and currently begrudgingly helping you.
Except the silence means you’re lost in thought, and you nearly run into him again once he stops. You catch yourself just in time, and look up at a nondescript apartment complex. At least, you think it’s an apartment complex. It looks decent enough, not fancy or otherwise flashy but clean. Besides, right now some privacy sounds heavenly.
“This is the place?”
Narrow eyes meet yours again, as if daring you to complain.
“A boarding house. They’ll have meals, and you have your own room. You owe me for this.”
You pause, then look back at the building, higher and higher up past the rows of windows. The different curtains and various trinkets you spot make it fun, somehow.
“Currently, I can only pay with the power of friendship, which we established you don’t want. Can we go up and look at the room? My feet are killing me.”
Wordlessly he unlocks the front door, leading you past a few curious gazes up into the staircase. You barely get to take in the hallway and adjacent communal rooms on the ground floor, but it’s fine, really. You’re a bit out-socialed anyway, and tomorrow is another day to leave bad impressions. Or, well - impressions ahead of the time.
Second floor, the third door on the right. Nondescript just like the outside, and you don’t see any obvious scratches around the lock or frame when you duck to see past Eclipse’s hand. He scowls at you, then opens the door.
The room is small, no question. But there’s a bed, a desk with drawers, a quaint little closet and a chair. Together with the promised meals and presumably bathrooms you’ll have to find, you’re all set.
From the window ring the faint noises of afternoon traffic, and you step closer. Eclipse remains by the door, and a small part of you reminds you that he’s probably eager to leave. You just can’t help it, you have to look first. Staring through the glass, the same street you just walked past seems a lot smaller. Somehow, it makes reality sink in more.
“You might want to look into getting a gun. You look like an easy target.”
The words barely reach you through your daze. At first, you just hum - but then you realize just what he said, and grimace instead. Not looking away from the window, mind you, but it’s the thought that counts.
“I don’t like guns.”
“Let me guess, you prefer knives?”
As much as it sounds like a question, his tone is too dry to actually mean it. You turn with a frown, tilting your head in a silent question. Just as silently, he gestures towards your arm, expression flat. Unnecessarily, you follow the motion, and blink at your tattoo.
And just like that the dread pooling in your stomach disappears.
Unfortunately for Eclipse’s mockery in the making, you grin.
“Oh, yeah! I collect them. Only ever carry one, though.”
“You already carry a knife?”
Eclipse perks up too, suddenly interested. You don’t think that mild enthusiasm will hold. It’s not really anything appropriate for self defense, not even as a bluff. Still, you dig around your pocket, and flip open the little knife before proudly holding it out towards him. His pupils shrink as he looks.
“Yup! Professor Stabby McStabstab.”
You’ve never seen an animatronic this disappointed before. Sure, you’ve seen your first one today, but that doesn’t have to mean anything. Maybe disappointed isn’t the right word, either - maybe, he just looks defeated.
“I need to stop having expectations. You shatter each and every one.”
The cheeky wink you direct at him doesn’t seem to cheer him up in the slightest.
“It’s my specialty.”
Eclipse has tasted many a lemon today thanks to you, it seems.
“I’m leaving.”
He turns where he stands, expression still sour, and moves to open the door. That gets you moving, too.
“Wait, one sec!”
The door stays open at a crack as you dash over to the desk, hoping there’s something to write there. You end up in luck. A rough pencil, hidden in a small ridge and looking slightly chewed on, and some yellowed paper stacked in the corner.
Quickly, you note down a haphazard I.O.U., together with the date you’ve seen printed on some newspapers now. There’s little else to write - “thanks for making sure I don’t end up homeless after appearing out of thin air and screaming at you” seems a bit wordy - but you feel like he’ll appreciate having a physical favor to cash in.
Skipping over to the door does mean you nearly trip over the chair, and have to steady both it and yourself for a moment. Your leg and side complain where you’ve hit them against the wood, and you wince slightly. You’ll have to get used to the small space.
For now, you finish your step and wave the note in Eclipse’s direction. He takes it with a frown. Probably best to explain before he can somehow turn it into an offense.
“Here, for that favor. I guess I can only offer friendship, and the professor, but if you do ever need either you know where to find me. You can also show this to your boss, maybe, if they decide to make a stink over you being late.”
Because you did end up occupying a lot of his time today. You don’t know enough about his job, given that you never asked, to know how much trouble he got himself into just to stop you from spiraling. All your pestering aside, you don’t want him to regret that.
Eclipse stares. His expression keeps shifting, and you end up somewhat concerned before he settles on a mild frown. The note he pockets carefully - you don’t hear the paper crinkle as he slides it into his coat.
“You’re strange.”
Without a care for what could be considered an insult, you take the two steps to cross the room back over to the bed.
“Would be rather boring otherwise, no?”
You drop onto the mattress, doing your best not to mind the squeaky springs - gift horses, and all that. With a grin his way you let yourself fall backwards. There’s not a lot of room to spread your arms, and the angle is off, but after a day of stress and running after a cactus on stilts it’s soft as a cloud. You even end up closing your eyes in a sigh.
There’s an exasperated echo from the door.
“Right, I’ll get to work then.”
The dismissal is obvious, and you crack open one eye just to wave at him. If the lazy twitch of your arm even counts as such.
“Great, have fun! I’ll lick my wounds, or something.”
Actually, maybe your eyelids are still too heavy. Just lying there sounds great for now. Everything else can wait until after a nap, maybe.
You haven’t heard the door shut yet.
“Your what?”
Eclipse is granted a spectacular view of your double chin, given that you’re entirely too lazy to actually sit up. He doesn’t seem to care. The pinprick pupils aren’t a good look for him. They startle you into honesty.
“Uh, yeah, I mean I’m pretty sure you bruised my shoulder.”
That was… sure a way to go about it. A very, very blunt one, unfortunately.
Whatever goes on in his head, you wonder if the journey his facial expression takes you on depicts it all. His eyes flash darkly twice before he chokes out a response.
“I have to go now.”
And then he’s gone. The door shakes slightly at the force with which he closes it.
Because you mentioned the bruises? In bad taste, you’ll admit, after all the help he offered you, but it’s not like you mind them. You’re pretty sure your run in with the chair left you just as bruised, not to mention all the mystery bruises you already have. The shoulder doesn’t even hurt anymore either.
But it doesn’t feel like he was reacting to the bad manners. You don’t know him, really, so what was going on in that head of his?
Curious, you heave yourself back up, first on your lower arms, and then into a sitting position. Did he…
You narrow your eyes, and investigate. Tip toeing for no reason other than feeling like the pink panther, you make your way over to the door. From afar, it could have been the light, or a strange texture to the handle - but brushing over it with your fingers makes the dents undeniable. Your shoulder got off easy, then.
Something tells you that Eclipse wouldn’t take that as reassurance.
Your hand lingers on the dented metal.
On impulse, you turn and bound over to the window. It’s stuck, and you have to throw your whole weight into it, but it opens with a pop - and when you stick out your head to look down, golden eyes furrowed in confusion meet yours.
A fun perspective, seeing him from above.
You grin. Cheerfully, and loudly, you call out to him, waving the “injured” arm for emphasis.
“Hey! Big, scary Eclipse! Thank you!”
The startled expression morphs into something unpleasant again, but you don’t mind it at all. If he has no friends, you bet he’s not used to gratitude either. Even gratitude tinged with a tease.
He draws a finger past his thin neck in a choppy motion before he stalks off, pointedly not looking up. That’s just fine by you.
You’re pretty sure he can hear you laughing.

chapter title: Fall For Me chapter summary: in which June has a nightmare, they meet a monster hunter, and Astarion has maybe possibly been in a tiny bit of denial. content warnings: street harassment, murder, fantasy racism
A/N: this one took me a little longer than usual because i was working on my smutfic, Nonsense. but here it is! this one is a ride, so strap in.

He’s done it.
He has her.
Astarion’s plan has worked, almost more spectacularly than he could have hoped. June has promised to help him. She cried for him. He has the mad mage wrapped around his finger. And honestly? He’s mostly had fun doing it. Being around her isn’t the chore he would have expected it to be when they first met. She’s clever, she entertains his hypotheticals, she tastes like the heavens, and she’s extremely attractive. He could not have picked a better mark for his plan.
Except for one tiny but crucial detail: he does actually, maybe, possibly, sort of like her a little.
And that’s a problem, because things Astarion likes - things he wants, things he cares about - are always ruined for him. They’re taken away or destroyed or twisted and corrupted until they are unrecognizable.
If he likes her, she has the power to hurt him. Or, worse, Cazador has the power to rip her away.
Still, he needs June. He needs her loyalty, her allegiance, and her trust. He has to keep her interested, keep her close, but not get any closer himself. He can’t get attached to her. For both of their sakes.
Astarion muses over all of this as he lays beneath one of his new quilts in his tent, staring at the underside of the canvas, shortly after waking from a pleasantly dreamless sleep. It’s still quite early. The birds are only just beginning to sing their morning songs outside, and he can hear Gale - who was meant to be on last watch - snoring by the fire. Luckily, he suspects that their new uninvited skeletal companion - who apparently goes by Withers - doesn’t sleep. The question is, would he alert everyone if something were to attack camp, or merely stand by and shrug it off as fate?
Astarion must admit that the latter option is rather hilarious.
He sits up and begins to reach for his clothing. After some brief deliberation, he decides to wear the new shirt he’s been sewing by hand over the last several days. It’s nothing special, just a simple man’s shirt with a deep V neckline. The fabric, which he had purchased in the druids’ grove, is fairly basic as well, though it’s dyed a beautiful shade of dark amethyst. It’s the first item of clothing he’s ever made from scratch. Until now, his sewing had been limited to repairing his old clothing in a desperate attempt to hang on to something - anything - from his life before Cazador.
He pulls on the shirt, tucking it into his trousers before rolling up the sleeves to expose his forearms. It’s not perfect - he can already see a few places where the stitching is a little uneven - but it’s certainly not bad for a first endeavor. He wishes he could look in a mirror, to see how it flatters his form, but unfortunately, that isn’t an option.
Instead, he decides that he can use June as his mirror. If her eyes go all big and soft and her cheeks turn pink then he’ll know he’s done a good job on this particular garment. And it will serve his purposes of keeping her on the line, holding her attention. Odds are good that it might even lead to them rolling around in her bedroll. He can certainly think of worse ways to start the day.
Astarion runs his fingers through his curls before fluffing them up. This should be easy. He’s a master of manipulation. A cold-hearted rake. A seducer who has led hundreds of people to their deaths without batting an eye. Without feeling a damn thing. The only difference here is that June probably won’t die. He’ll break her heart eventually, of course, but it could be worse. It was worse for all the others.
If she hasn’t fallen for him yet, she’s certainly close. He just needs to keep up the act, keep her interested, and he cannot, under any circumstances, fall for her.
But the image of her last night flashes back into his mind. Her dark blue eyes wide and glistening as a single tear slipped down her pale, moonlit cheek. Her soft fingers gently brushing over the back of his hand. And he hears a cold, mocking voice - Cazador’s voice - taunting him from beyond time and space.
“It’s too late, boy. The line between what’s an act is real has already blurred. You’re a fool. Softer and weaker than you thought. And that’s going to ruin you both.”
“No!” he snaps, and then winces when he realizes he’s said it out loud, the word cracking like a whip in the silence of his tent.

Hi! If you’re still doing the WIP Q&A can you tell me something about the Tiel’Drysar? I’m particularly curious about how their reincarnation might affect their social norms around age/gender/appearance/etc
Hi, yep definitely. Sorry I missed your first ask I will get to that later. I have just come back from a big physics project so I have a little more time now.
Ok so the Tiel’Drysar…
The Tiel’Drysar used to be just called the Drysar until they made the pact with death.
Drysar was a long-standing nation who intensely studied necromancy and the death realm. (True death not Tamir’sul) Through the generations a few of the strongest necromancers travelled into death and very few made it out to describe the realm in incredible detail. They write their findings in a book containing detailed maps of the realm and descriptions of the Tae’etsu (the type of creatures that escort souls through death).
After the godly war the Drysar become even more powerful as they don’t fight so have little competition, and lots of magic is released into the world.
Essentially after years of research the Drysar travel to death in small groups for further research and they start getting back more frequently. (This is only living souls, no dead souls have made it back)
During this very successful period, they find a powerful necromancer in death and a drysar fights them and wins. This necromancer is wearing a medallion that allows the wearer to pass through death and into a new life without losing their memories. This was a big discovery because up until now, only living souls could remember after travelling in death.
This Drysar walked through death for many years in research until Death takes notice of this living mortal unafraid of his domain. Olsaan (Death) visits the drysar and speaks to them of their purpose in his domain. He learns of the medallion, and though the Drysar is originally afraid that he will kill them, he is actually quite impressed at their adamant defiance of death for so long. He has no fear that the mortal will come back to him eventually but was interested in their fleeting hope for continued life. The drysar becomes a follower of Olsaan and he gives them guidance through his plane.
Because of the success of this alliance, Olsaan agrees to make more amulets for the Drysar, allowing them to be reborn without losing their memories. Eventually old Drysar pass their medallions to other people and choose to die fully and death welcomes them home as honoured guests and guides them to a new life.
The drysar change their name to the Tiel’Drysar meaning ‘living drysar’ to honour their extended lives and pact with death.
So very practically, how does this work? How does it effect the culture?
The form the Tiel’Drysar take depends on the state of their body. If their body is kept in good condition and was not damaged beyond repair in their death they can return to the same body after rebirth. Because of this they have a large culture of the sacredness of dead bodies and have extensive healing and maintaining rituals to keep a body stable after death so the soul can return. Alternatively if the person specifically hated their previous form, they can request their body cremated before they return so they are forced into a new body.
New bodies are either newborn babies who gain their memories gradually as they have the capacity to hold them, or they can be other good quality bodies that are no longer connected to a soul. E.g. their previous host soul has already passed to a different body.
How does this effect social norms?
Well they don’t really have children unless they are intending to die soon and pass on their medallion so there are not really any family units. Because of this they skipped over a lot of the sexism stuff that the Altic went through as the women always worked with the men.
Also because anyone can reincarnate into any body, they believe that the form means little to nothing as they really only care about the soul inside, so you always state your age as a total of all your lifetimes and gender is a really fluid concept.
Age is still very important to them, if you have not experienced your first rebirth then you have little credibility in the Tiel’Drysar and all natural mortals seem like children to this ancient people. Despite this implied hierarchy they do actually help out the mortals in many ways, guarding the mortal plane from any threats that pass through death, including necromancers and the undead they might raise. They have dealings with the lighthouse keepers (ooh new faction…) sometimes, but other than that are mainly self reliant.
Hope this answers the question, please feel free to ask more, (I will get to your earlier question now, Thanks for waiting)
Tagging @wyked-ao3, @drchenquill and @honeybewrites because you all asked about something similar.

The evening has just begun, but you're already so ready to choke Kakashi with your own two hands.
~ X ~
Heya! I accidentally posted the second chapter one week early, so now you guys had to wait a bit longer for the third one. Sorry for the waiting time, but I hope you guys have fun! :D
~ X ~
Private dinner with your boss. Yeah, sure. Totally doable. Nothing you ever imagined doing after merely a few months in the company, but sure. Especially under these circumstances. Dinner with your boss, his wonderful wife and the annoying pest called Hatake?
Maybe not so doable.
But here you were, sitting in your car, wearing your second-best casual business outfit consisting of a form-fitting blouse, a nice cardigan, dress pants and flats which were comfortable enough to run in (just in case, you had told yourself when you slipped into them, just in case…) and stared up at the apartment complex in one of the richer neighborhoods of the city.
Your own flat was a joke against theirs. Fuck, they had a fucking usher! The foyer was bigger than your living room, fuck, even bigger than your entire flat! This was way too scary, way over your league. You could still cancel this entire ordeal, you were sure-!
Knock-knock.
Startled, you turned your head. Somebody was standing right beside your car and knocked at your window.
Of course, it had to be the thorn in your flesh. Hatake looked as amused as you felt while he watched you climb out of your car. For one moment, in which Hatake checked your clothes from head to toe, you thought he would dare to utter a comment, but thankfully he kept his mouth shut. Merely a twitch of his eyebrows, then he turned away without a word and walked right up to the entrance of the massive, impressive building.
“Asshole,” you growled and closed the door to your car with more force than necessary, “fucking… asshole.”
You were already surprised that Hatake was waiting for you in the wide foyer, hands buried in the deep pockets of his checkered coat, the holes in his jeans as big as the entire complex. He glanced over his shoulder, like he wanted to check on you, but then nodded into your direction, then at the big usher with a bandana wrapped around his head and scars criss-crossing over his face.
“Evening, Ibiki.”
“Hey kiddo.”
Again, Kakashi nodded at you over his shoulder as you closed the distance. “She belongs to me.”
“Dinner with your parents?”
“Yeah.”
The usher Ibiki snorted, before turning again to his crossword-puzzle. “Fucked up again, huh?”
You could basically hear the rolling of Hatake’s eyes, even when he was looking away from you. “Not really, but Kushina is annoying me.”
“You probably deserve it.”
Again, audible eye-rolling. “Sure.”
Nothing more than that exchange, and Hatake passed by the usher and stood in front of the elevator. His hand reached out to impatiently press the button to call the elevator. And again. And again, like he couldn’t wait to get this over with.
With a roll of your eyes, you turned your attention towards Ibiki (who seemed way overqualified to be a mere usher just from his aura alone). “Hey. My name is (Y/N) (Y/LN). Sorry for…” You gestured at Hatake’s back. “That.”
Ibiki merely snorted while scribbling another word down for his crossword puzzle. “The brat always has been like that. And every goddamn time Minato and Kushina make up for it with a fancy dinner. Watch out, little one. He wants something from you.”
“Minato or Hatake?”
“Definitely Hatake.” Another quick scribble of his pen, then he halted. “Word for Aspirin, for a headache? Six letters, a ‘y’ at the end.”
“Remedy, maybe?”
“Mhmm.” Ibiki scribbled once more, then a scarred smile crossed his face. “Fits. Good thinking. Better keep going, the brat is impatient today.”
Like clockwork, Hatake was coughing in a way you could only describe as “annoyed” and indeed “impatient”. Because you felt like it, you nodded into his direction before rolling your eyes hard. Ibiki snorted at that, but kept quiet. His pen was cocked into Hatake’s direction, then he returned his entire attention to his crossword puzzle.
Back to the bullshit evening, you sighed inwardly, then turned back to Hatake. Nothing like a bit of dinner with a side of nice, feel-good stories, without a doubt made up, to make you forgive their problem child. How else would they try to win you over, if not with food, the display of money and potential connections leading to better jobs in the future?
If there would be a future for you in marketing. Maybe, the Uzumaki’s just invited you to threaten you into submission. Also, a possibility you didn’t want to cross out.
When you reached the elevator and stepped inside, you already feared the small, enclosed space, caged with Hatake in such a small room. That would definitely be an uncomfortable ride upwards.
Hatake pushed a button, the doors closed, and the elevator started to rise. Weak music drifted out of some hidden speakers, a piano mixed with a violin. Arms crossed over your chest, you stared at the upper rim of the doors. You could only guess Hatake was doing something similar to avoid talking to you.
But no such luck.
“He likes you.”
“What?” You whipped your head around to stare at the man, but he stubbornly continued to glare at the door.
“Ibiki.” Hatake clarified with a grumble. “He doesn’t like everybody. Just a few people. Be happy.”
“Oh yeah, right.” You rolled your eyes. “Happy someone likes me. Great feeling. Thanks.”
“I didn’t mean it that way.”
“Yeah? How did you mean it then, if not to make another snide comment?”
Kakashi sighed, like he was talking to a completely oblivious child. “Fine. Then don’t listen to my words. Cool.”
“Explain yourself for once, you insufferable douche, and I might be able to understand what you’re trying to say!”
But no. Hatake shrugged, grunted wordlessly and fell back into his usual silent brooding, like you would fall for it like some idiot. Annoyed, you huffed as well, and the following silence lasted until the elevator stopped, and its doors opened once more. Thankfully, Hatake gestured for you to step out in front of him, otherwise you might’ve pushed him out of your way in order to escape.
The hallway wasn’t any less luxurious than the entrance hall. Rich carpet below your feet, the walls painted in a creamy white with some kind of mosaic-structure painted on top of it, shimmering in turquoise and rich red. Kakashi obviously had walked this way many times, as he immediately stepped out of the elevator and turned left. You had no choice but to follow him, as you had no idea where to go. Thankfully, he didn’t speak up anymore, so you didn’t have to come up with any clever quips and retorts. Really, you were running short, and the anxiety over meeting your boss and his awesome wife privately was more than a wrench in the cogs of your brain.
Still, without a word uttered, Kakashi simply stopped in front of an inauspicious door. Nothing out of the ordinary to see, but the card below the doorbell read “Namikaze + Uzumaki Household”.
You were already reaching past him to ring the bell, but Kakashi’s exasperated sigh made you stop and curl your loose fingers into a tight fist. “What?”
“Do not ring the bell. Naruto will get all hyped up about it.”
“Who is…”
“Their young son. He’s in elementary school and just…” Another deep sigh, and for the first time, it wasn’t about your inadequacy, but another person, even though it was a child. “I guess he has ADHD or fell into a sugar fountain as a child. Either way, he’s just way too excited about everything.”
He sounded absolutely exhausted just by thinking about the possible whirlwind looming behind the front door. As you turned your head to look at the man, you noticed the wrinkled eyebrows, the deep frown and the downward tug of his mouth overall. He absolutely didn’t want to alert Naruto, under all circumstances.
Deliberately slow, you leaned forward and pressed the bell. It felt so good and petty for the doorbell to give away under your fingertips, just as good as the satisfaction felt when you looked again towards Kakashi.
The frown on his face deepened, until the frown turned into an outright scowl. A shame, he still looked way too handsome like this. “Really?”
You nodded. “You shouldn’t have told me.”
Just when he wanted to answer, you could hear the first signs of a storm incoming. Loud laughter, a distinctive female voice yell-whispering something, then light yet very loud steps, and the door was ripped open.
“Kakashi!” In a whirlwind of scrawny legs and pudgy arms, a small, blond boy threw himself into the man by your side. “Oh man, it’s so good you came over tonight, believe it! I set up a racetrack, and Dad cooked my favorite dessert, and Mom promised I could stay up for an hour longer than usual because you’re here! This is the bestest day ever, believe it!”
Kakashi caught the young boy easily. Like he already had done so a hundred times before, he raised the boy up, until he could hold him comfortably in his arms and talk to him without looking down on the child. Despite a small annoyed glare in your direction, his voice was as leveled and calm as one could be.
“Sounds like a lot is going on. And a racetrack?”
“Yeah!” The boy nodded wildly, the blond locks a bit too long, so they jumped around with the motions. “With the set you and Mom gifted me for Christmas! And it’s so cool, Sasuke came by for a sleepover once and was really jealous.”
“Was he?”
“Totally.” Another nod. “He wouldn’t stop playing with the cars! His one wasn’t as good as mine though, it was boring and black and blue.”
“And yours…”
“Was the golden one!”
“The yellow one with red highlights.”
The boy stuck his tongue out, which you could only see because he was turning his head towards you. “My golden car. Hey! My name is Naruto Uzumaki, believe it! Who are you?”
In one thing, Kakashi had been right: Naruto was a strange mix of way too much sugary energy and a possible ADHD-diagnosis. But what he failed to mention was the charisma the small guy already emitted, not unlike his father, Minato Namikaze. You had no doubt that lots of people were falling over themselves to please this little guy, no matter the loud voice or lacking manners.
“I’m (Y/N),” you answered, while a smile formed on your face, “and I’m very pleased to meet you, Naruto.”
His shockingly blue eyes mustered you from head to toe. Not a single thing was left out, and when his eyes met yours once more, you noticed the whisker-like marks on his cheeks. “You’re pretty.”
“My,” amusement laced your voice, “thank you.”
“Are you Kakashi’s wife?”
That, however, got you sputtering. How ridiculous! You, being Kakashi’s wife? That was simply and utterly dumb, and such a childish view on the matter.
“No,” you pressed out after a few seconds of flabbergasted silence, “I’m not. We’re just co-workers. Colleagues.”
Obviously, Naruto didn’t really understand. “Co… Co-what?”
“We’re not like Mum and Dad,” Kakashi interjected, “we’re just working on a project together. You know, like you and Sasuke playing together.”
Quickly, Naruto’s head snapped around, his beautiful blue eyes wide in curiosity. “Who is me and who is Sasuke, then?”
Before any of you could answer, the front door opened wider. Kushina appeared, her long hair pulled into a messy, already halfway undone bun. Even dressed in normal jeans and t-shirt, she was a mesmerizing sight. Honestly, how was she doing this?
“Oi, Naruto! What did I say about opening the door?” Despite the words, Kushina didn’t sound particularly angry. Just a bit annoyed that a clear instruction had been again disregarded or simply forgotten. Stepping outside, the woman offered her arms to Naruto, who gladly wiggled out of Kakashi’s grip to get back to his mother. As she picked him up, you could immediately see all the similarities between them, despite their differing hair color. Same round eyes, same face structure, the same curious spark in their eyes as they both turned towards you, Naruto sitting now in Kushina’s arms, with his arms slung around her neck.
“Hey there.”
All of a sudden, your anxiety and nervousness about eating dinner with your two bosses, your personal nemesis and a small child in a more than private setting returned. With a vengeance. The palms of your hands felt slippery as you reached out, with your fingers weakly trembling and your voice shaking alongside them.
Fuck, you hoped neither of them noticed.
“It’s a pleasure to be here, Kushina. Thank you so much for inviting me.”
The woman laughed, all the while hoisting Naruto a bit higher up in her arms. “Aah, it’s no trouble. This one,” she let Naruto bounce on her arms, who giggled way too cutely for his own good, “is always happy to make new friends. I believe one day, we actually have to install some good old stranger-danger-fear into him.”
Kakashi shook his head. “That will never work. He will just get on the kidnappers’ nerves until they let him go.”
“A quite effective strategy. Alright, but why are we standing in the hallway, gossiping like a bunch of old women? Get in here.” And with that, Kushina pushed the door leading inside her home wide open, gesturing for the both of you to follow her. Kakashi stepped over the doorstep without a second thought, and after a few moments, you had no other choice but to follow after the two.
Three, if you count Naruto.
The apartment looked every bit you imagined it to look like. And at the same time, it was nothing like you imagined. The interior looked as pricey and expensive as you already guessed, with the walls painted in a slight off-white, the dark, expensive wood used for the shoe rack and the big wardrobe shining like it was freshly polished, as well as the rich fabric and colors everywhere. But there were also the small and colorful children’s shoes and toys strewn around the entrance area, the doodles in red and blue peeking out from behind the wardrobe, obviously smeared across the off-white walls with a chubby hand, and the weak sound of a children’s show from somewhere cut into that picture of decadence and wealth.
You were so captivated by the surrounding sight, nearly bumped into Kakashi. Just in time, you caught yourself from your nose meeting his shoulder.
“Watch it,” you growled out of instinct, “what are you…”
Your voice trailed off as your eyes wandered downwards. Kakashi was in the middle of pulling his shoes off. When your eyes darted up, they met Kakashi’s. Both of his eyebrows wandered up, and in his own eyes stood the silent challenge to be pissy with him right now. Right there, in the apartment of his parents, in the apartment of your bosses, with a young child who obviously looked up to him so close by.
You could just turn in your resignation the next day. Fighting with him loudly and proudly over something so insignificant as nearly bumping into him would surely put you on a speed-track to unemployment and a blacklist in the industry.
“Shoes off at the entrance,” Kakashi grumbled, only to turn around and put his own away, “and just… one thing.”
“One thing?” you echoed. Slipping out of your flats was easy enough, so your attention was mostly fixated on the man. There was something different about him. At first, you couldn’t quite put your fingers on it, but when he turned to look over his shoulder, checking for Kushina or Naruto, you got a gist of what was going on.
He was nervous.
Something was going on you weren’t aware of, and you couldn’t wait to find out what it could be. Really, maybe it could help you survive this evening with a little bit more than just keeping your job.
Maybe, your dignity could survive, too.
“One thing,” Kakashi whispered after another long glance over his shoulder, “and one thing only.”
“Alright.” You peeled the cardigan off your arms. “You have ten seconds to explain your issue, whatever your issue is.”
“There’s no issue. I just want to ask something.”
“Nine, eight…” You didn’t even try to suppress your satisfied grin at the slightly annoyed, slightly nervous look the man gave you. All of a sudden, you had your hands on the steering wheel, just with such a little exchange of words. You definitely could get used to that feeling.
“Listen,” Kakashi hissed while throwing another glance over his shoulder, always on the watch for any interruptions, “can we be at least civil tonight? I know you don’t like me-!”
“Like you? Oh, don’t give yourself so much credit.”
“I know you hate me,” he pressed through gritted teeth, “But can we pretend that it was just banter which got out of hand? Please?”
“Oh?” Both of your eyebrows rose. “Now, you discovered your manners? When you have to beg me for something?”
“I’m not begging. I’m asking you nicely to please consider-!”
You interrupted him, just when you slipped your second arm out of your cardigan. “I will not act like this just got out of hand. You acted like an absolute ass to me. I don’t care that you get in trouble. Actually, if you get in trouble, that would be perfect!”
“I’m not…” Kakashi sighed out. “I’m not asking you to suddenly be all buddy-buddy with me, okay?”
“Really? It sounded that way.”
“But,” he ignored your statement, “I’m asking you to… work with me here.”
The silence following was underlined by the far away sounds of a busy kitchen, Naruto’s babbling and Kushina’s soft voice murmuring something. If the little family noticed that their two guests were missing, then they either had that much trust or didn’t care. Anyway, it suited the both of you and your furiously whispered conversation.
“Work with you?” you asked.
Kakashi nodded weakly. “Yes. Please,” he added after a few seconds of consideration.
“Work.”
“Yes.”
“With…” Deliberately, you let your eyes flutter over his entire front. Up and down, until you got the impression he fidgeted under your glare. “With you?”
“Yes.”
“You know how hypocritical you sound. After you wanted to boot me off the team for the Akatsuki-campaign.”
“I tried to, yes. But I didn’t succeed, did I?”
At that statement, your mouth actually fell open. The audacity! The absolute audacity of this bitch right in front of you! How could he stand there, trying to plead his way into your good graces without sharing any of his reasoning, while reminding you simultaneously of the very reason why the two of you even got here?
“Fuck you,” you whispered, all the while pointing at him with fury in your eyes and genuine anger in your heart, “fuck you for even suggesting that. How can a single person be this used to getting their way? It’s actually insane! How dare you for acting like you threatened to get me off your team didn’t screw me over! How dare you for acting like this is all a big joke to you! How dare you for being an entitled prick all around! I will not play nice for you, least of all-!”
“Dinner’s ready!”
Minato Namikaze’s voice echoed through the hallway. That pulled you back into reality. Right there and then, in the middle of the fancy entrance area of the Namikaze-Uzumaki apartment, with their young son basically right next to you and a hot dinner waiting, you threw Kakashi a last, hateful glare, before brushing past him.
Not without “accidentally” kicking his shoes a little bit.
The petty action gave you enough time to enter the open room from which the voices of your boss, your other boss and their child came from. Again, you were flashed by the proof your superiors were just that rich, which really shouldn’t come as that much of a surprise. Konohagakure Marketing wasn’t one of the highest-earning companies around the country without a reason, after all.
Living room and kitchen were connected in a wide, open space. A table big enough to fit eight people at least stood close enough to a kitchen aisle, illuminated by a modern chandelier with milk-glass adorning the matted, black metal. On top of the table waited four fine dining sets: fine earthenware in a muted yet beautiful shade of blue. The color faintly reminded you of Naruto’s eyes. Another, smaller set was decked out as well; probably for the lone child, measured at the comic-figures adorning the sturdy plastic.
The side of the room which was the dedicated living space seemed to drown in controlled chaos. Children’s toys, lots of pencils strewn around, and a huge, obnoxiously orange fox with nine tails laid across the fluffy thick carpet, for now placed aside, but not forgotten. Close-by was Kushina, who was busy catching up to Naruto again, who, with all his energy, ran around the living room like a lightning bolt.
Letting your eyes wander, you finally spotted Minato. Obviously enough, he was the cook for the evening, adorned by thick oven-mitts and a checkered apron. He waved at you when he noticed you on the doorstep, before pulling one of his oven-mitts off and rounding the kitchen aisle, which was drowning in a mess of its own.
“Hello there,” he reached out and too stunned to do anything else, you answered the handshake without a second thought, “so good to see you! I hope you’re alright with lasagna. I've made two small portions, one with meat, the other without any animal ingredients, so I hope those are alright…”
“Oh god, that’s… thank you, that wouldn’t have been necessary.”
“Absolutely. And hey, if we don’t manage to eat it all,” Minato’s smile was infectious, “then we have plenty of leftovers to freeze. No harm done.”
“Please, no more leftovers.” Kushina’s voice was only the tiniest bit out of breath. Turning around, you just watched her hauling the small bundle of energy around like it was nothing. “We have no more space in our freezer.”
“And if we just buy a second…”
“No second freezer!”
It was clear who was in charge at home. At the office, Minato was the people-leader, hands-on and creative to no end. People came to work with him, but at the end of the day, they loved to work for Kushina. Truly, if one couple deserved the title “power-couple” then it was those two, without a doubt in your mind.
Minato pouted, his own dark-blue eyes twinkling in gentle mischief. “But we have to think about Thanksgiving! Easter! And what about the Christmas meals?”
“Next Christmas,” Kushina instantly retorted, “we’re ordering pizza. No leftovers stuffed into the freezer. I’m still amazed how much you pulled out of there today, did you play tetris there?”
“Just… a little bit. Possibly,” Minato added, after a very long and worrisome second.
The redhead sighed out, all the while allowing Naruto to dangle over her shoulder like a sack of potatoes. “And that’s why I can’t leave you alone.” Her eyes fluttered to something — someone — behind you, and even before she opened her mouth again, you knew who stepped in. “Kakashi, you have to take some leftovers off our hands again. Start with tonight and some of the lasagna, okay?”
“We haven’t even eaten yet,” the man grumbled, brushed past you, only to lean down to Kushina and press a gentle kiss to her cheek, “and you’re worrying about leftovers.”
“I didn’t, Minato started it!”
“I can imagine.” You could hear the eyeroll in his voice, but there was something… different about him. Not only did he lose his checkered coat, revealing the simple dark henley shirt beneath, but he seemed…
You had no idea or clue. He and Minato quickly hugged, before Kakashi turned towards the table. He completely ignored you, which satisfied you immensely on one hand, and on the other…
Mhm… His ignorance of your presence vexxed you the tiniest bit. Like it didn’t matter that you stood right there, waiting to be in some way acknowledged.
“I’m nearly done with the lasagna, so please. Please! Sit down and make yourself at home.” Minato directed that sentence more at you than Kakashi, you noticed, as he was clearly already comfortable enough in the home of your boss. Without asking, he pulled back one of the chairs, glanced over his shoulder at you, only to sit down next to the pulled-out seat.
You could feel a subconscious frown pulled at your mouth. This was… strange. What was he doing there? Did he really want you to sit beside him?
You had to decide fast. Maybe, this was some kind of olive branch he tried to extend? A shitty and bare one, but an olive branch still. Or did he just want to manipulate you to “work with him”, as he so nicely put it? While you tried to think about a reason for his strange behavior, your feet started to move, taking a few steps towards the table and shuffling your body into the seat.
Besides Kakashi’s motive, what was the reason Minato and Kushina invited you in the first place? Sure, Kakashi might be their favorite creative head in the company, but that wasn’t a reason to solve his problems with other colleagues for him. According to some of the stuff which had been said, they already did it once or twice.
I never heard of an Obito, though.
Was he maybe let go? Or left willingly because Kakashi bullied him so much?
But then again, the bastard was apparently the best man at Obito’s wedding.
Something didn’t add up. You were missing a few pieces of the puzzle, and like that, you had no other choice but to keep smiling while listening to Kushina talk about this and that. At this point, every piece of information about Kakashi would help you, it had to.
The woman was truly incredible. Handling Naruto on one arm, who still climbed up and down like Kushina was his personal jungle-gym, with the other she distributed wine around the table. “Say, (Y/N)...” she started when she poured a sip of wine into the glass in front of you, “for how long have you been with us?”
“A few months now, I think.”
“Do you like it so far? Apart from,” Kushina’s eyes glared at Kakashi, who had the decency to sink a little bit deeper into his seat, “from some unsavory encounters, is there anything we can improve?”
“Oh no, really. I don’t believe… Ah. Well, there is something, I think.”
“And what?”
“The kitchen areas.” You nodded simply and reached for the wine glass. “They need a little bit of an update. The coffee machines are old, some are breaking down already.”
Kushina nodded, her bright red hair following the motion. “True, we already received some complaints about them. The new machines should arrive next week. Right?” She turned to Minato, who was about to sprinkle some herbs over the food. “The coffee machines?”
“Next week, Thursday, I believe.” As he pulled a pair of bright-orange mittens over his hands, Minato turned his attention towards the two dishes set in front of him. “Alright, here I come. Naruto, don’t run in front of me, okay?”
“Don’t worry, I have him.” Kushina hoisted the small child up into her arms, ignoring his loud laughter and demands to be thrown again over her shoulder.
“Can I help?” At the sight of your boss handling the hot porcelain with utmost care, you were about to jump to his help, but Kakashi again beat you to it. Without a word, he rose from his seat and walked over to the kitchen counter, casually rolling up his sleeves as he did so.
You had never seen his forearms before. Usually, he was way too covered to reveal even an inch of skin to anyone in the office. Begrudgingly, you had to admit that Kakashi had very nice forearms. Forearms you might even go for if not for the rest of the human attached to them. Still, nothing wrong with admiring some good-looking forearms, right?
It was so much better when Kakashi shut up and just did stuff, you noted, as you watched him work away beside Minato. The muscles in his arms shifted ever so slightly beneath the skin as he gently pushed his boss out of the way to reach for another pair of thick gloves. Pulling them over his hands obscured the view just the tiniest bit, but not enough to make a little bit of ogling not worthwhile. Quickly, you ripped your eyes away from that sight, focusing instead on Kushina, who just settled Naruto down and sunk into the chair, reaching for a glass of wine she just filled herself. “Alright… No, Naruto, can you let me rest for a bit? You have grown so much that my arms are all tired, see?” Laughing, she dangled her left into his direction like a wet noodle, the other raised the wine glass to her lips for a quick sip.
Then, as Naruto accepted his fate and turned to his toys spread around the living room, Kushina’s attentive eyes turned back to you. “Sorry, we got a bit derailed. How do you like it so far at our company? Are there any improvements we can make?”
You reached for your glass of wine yourself, taking a sniff of the heavy liquid before sipping at it. “Other than the coffee machines and break rooms, I have to say, this is one of the best work places I’ve worked at so far. The team has a great dynamic, there’s lots of communication between the different teams too, and there’s lots of raw material to work with. The database of past campaigns for each and every client is… extensive, to say the least.”
“That’s fantastic to hear.”
“Really?”
“Yeah.” Kushina chuckled while swirling the wine in her glass. “To be honest with you, we always wanted to make sure that our employees all have the resources and good work environment they need to be creative. Minato and I were too often stuck in bad situations because we worked for companies and people which didn’t care so much about what their creative heads had to work with.”
“So you wanted to do better…”
“Indeed,” Kushina took another sip, “and the results speak for itself.”
It was so clear she was proud of what she created with her husband, that you couldn’t help but feel a little bit warm. A gentle smile flashed over your face, just tugging at the corners of your mouth, before a full dish of steaming lasagna was settled right in front of you. Looking up, your eyes followed the line of the arms wrapped in the thick gloves, the pushed up edges of a black Henley shirt, the noticeable veins right beneath the almost snow-white skin, up a surprisingly muscular biceps, to the curve of a shoulder, up to…
Dark eyes. A small, handsome smile curving his lips into something you wouldn’t mind seeing more often. A dimple in his cheek, dangerously close, so dangerous in fact you ripped your eyes away as soon as you could. You had to blink rapidly to erase the afterimage of the flirtatious smile. That must’ve been a mistake of Kakashi, to throw you such a dangerous smile — surely, he saved that one for more worthy targets.
You felt more than you watched how Kakashi sat down by your side, barely listening to the ongoing chit-chatter of Minato and Kushina. There was only Kakashi’s silent presence in the room, and the mere fact that you noticed him so much annoyed you to no end.
Please, you prayed in your mind, let this evening go by quickly.

The weather had been weird for days now, heavy clouds hanging in the purplish sky and a constant drizzle making puddles form in the streets. The Uncle from the car shop on the first floor said it was an omen; that something bad was approaching. Your landlady called him crazy and said it just needed a proper thunderstorm and the sunny weather would be back. But she didn’t like him much to begin with and if he wasn’t such a good tenant, for whatever that meant, she would have thrown him out long ago. You didn’t really care much for her idle talk. You were somewhat fond of the Uncle, even more so since your cat Humpty Dumpty seemed to have taken a liking to him too, visiting him in his shop, whenever he managed to sneak out of your third floor apartment.
So, when the Uncle told you to be careful in this weird weather and to keep an extra watchful eye on Humpty for the time being, you’d meant to heed his advice.
You must have had a moment of inattention though, because when you came home after getting groceries you found your small flat to be empty. You’d forgotten to close the bathroom window and he must’ve snuck out from there. With a sigh you set the groceries down in the kitchen area before stepping out again, hoping that maybe he was just in the car shop downstairs.
You were lucky, finding the brown animal curled up on the roof of a beige vintage car, while the Uncle himself was working beneath the car, only his legs poking out.
“Here to pick up your cat?” He asked, without coming out.
“He slipped out again,” you replied while picking Humpty up from his spot that must have been incredibly comfortable if his unsatisfied meowing was anything to go by. “Thanks for keeping an eye on him.”
The man laughed. “Felt more like he was keeping an eye on me, honestly.”
You nodded even though he couldn’t see you, watching a little longer.
“That’s a nice car,” you commented, more to make polite conversation than anything else. You didn’t actually know anything about cars, but you did think it was a pretty one with the little hood ornament resembling the shape of an M.
“Yeah, it’s a nice one. A Ford Mercury Monarch, though I doubt you’ve suddenly taken a big interest in cars, have you?”
“Not really.” You chuckled, feeling caught. Of course he’d know that you were just being polite. “Still, it’s kinda pretty.”
“Mhm,” he hummed.
Humpty started to fidget in your arms and you knew it was time to head upstairs if you didn’t want him to scratch you.
“I better go back.”
“Mhm,” he hummed again and you were about to leave, when he pushed himself out from under the car and eyed you seriously.
“Remember to be careful, y/n,” he reminded you once more. “I think there’ll be a storm tonight.”
Somehow the way he said it felt insinuating and sent a weird shiver down your spine.
You swallowed around the lump in your throat.
“I’ll remember it.”
With a weary feeling in your stomach you left his shop, slipping back out into the rain. The building you lived in was an old factory that had been turned into several loft apartments and the commercial property downstairs. A bunch of the complexes in your neighborhood were like that which gave the area a certain charme when the sun was shining onto the red brickstones and reflecting from the big, old windows. When it rained like now though, the sky above dark and grey, the tall buildings almost looked intimidating.
Just when you wanted to turn towards the entrance door next to the shop to head upstairs, you saw a white shadow rushing through your peripheral vision. Your head instinctively snapped around, and you clearly hadn’t been the only one to notice. Humpty all but leaped out of your arms, chasing the white shadow down the street which seemed to be—a rabbit?
For a moment you were frozen in place, watching your beloved fur ball disappear down the street. But then you snapped out of it, running after him as fast as you could.
Sadly, it wasn’t fast enough to catch up to him and to make things worse the Uncle had been right about the storm. The rain was picking up and you heard thunder rumbling in the distance.
Eventually you found yourself in a side street, no trace of either the cat nor the rabbit. Humpty had never been one to come back when called, but you tried anyway, shouting out his name, the brick-lined house walls echoing it back to you.
You knew Humpty would be able to find his way back home, but you didn’t like the idea of him outside in this weather by himself. So, you kept going, even when the rain got so strong you could barely see what was in front of you.
Feeling somewhat resigned, you turned into another side street, just to be met with the rabbit sitting right in the middle of the road, his bright white fur standing out against the gray surroundings. Humpty on the other hand was nowhere to be seen. But something inside of you told you that if you caught the rabbit, you would surely find him too.
The white animal watched you with calm eyes as you approached, and you almost thought you’d be able to grab it, when it bolted, disappearing behind a corner. You rushed after it, turning into the dead end just to find it deserted and almost completely flooded. The giant puddle seemed to reflect the sky above impossibly sharp, despite the raindrops rippling the surface. In the reflection it didn’t even look all that dark and cloudy, but before you could wonder about it more or bemoan the water drenching your shoes, you suddenly felt yourself stepping into a void, the floor beneath your feet simply disappearing. In a weird epiphany you realized it must have been a missing duct cover, but it wasn’t like that would help you now. You were already falling, dark water swallowing you whole.
Tumblr media
When you came to, the first thing you realized was that you were cold and wet. You blinked your eyes open and pushed your damp hair out of your face. It didn’t make sense, you were sure you’d fallen down into the sewer, but you found yourself in the same dead end again, sitting in the middle of the giant puddle, completely drenched. At least the rain had let off and the sky was dyed in shades of pink and purple.
You felt for the opening in the ground that you’d fallen into with your hand, but the duct cover was right there. Confused, you tried to squeeze some water out of your clothes which was only so effective considering that you were still sitting in the puddle.
Just then, your eyes fell onto the white rabbit at the street corner he’d come from, looking at you almost thoughtfully. But then, as if he snapped himself out of a trance, his eyes widened.
“Oh no, oh no,” he mumbled, or you would have thought he did if it wasn’t impossible for a rabbit to speak. “Go back, quickly!”
“What?” you asked anyway, but the rabbit just turned and bolted off again.
“Time is running out.”
For a brief second you stared at the spot where he’d still sat a moment ago, but then you quickly stumbled to your feet and ran after him. You turned the corner just in time to see a man, not a rabbit, scurrying down the street. He had snow white hair, just like the bright fur of the rabbit, and it felt a bit too odd to be a coincidence. Especially with the pair of rabbit ears sitting right there on his head.
“Oh no, oh no,” you heard him again from the distance and even though none of this made any sense, you kept going after him.
Despite running until your lungs burned, you couldn't catch up to him. Maybe that was your sign to call it a day, you thought. Surely, Humpty had already made his way back home to your apartment by himself to escape the bad weather.
When you looked around though, you noticed that something about your neighborhood felt off. On first glance it was the same, but on second glance everything was different. All kinds of weird plants were overgrowing the pavement and crawling up the brick walls. There were no lights on behind the windows, no matter where you looked, nor was there any other trace of people.
Overcome with an eerie feeling you slowly made your way down the street in the direction of your home. The light of the street lamps looked colder than usual and they flickered in irregular intervals.
“I think you’re going the wrong way,” a voice behind you suddenly said matter of factly.
Startled, you turned around, looking right into the face of a young man with bright blue hair. He smiled and it was undeniably pretty, but it didn’t look entirely genuine.
“What do you mean?”
Instead of a reply he just shrugged and then seemed to disappear into thin air. You looked around, trying to understand where he’d gone, but he was nowhere to be found.
“What do you mean?” you repeated, your voice a little shaky.
“That the direction you’re going in is wrong.” He suddenly replied from right next to you.
“But I’m going home.”
“If you say so.” He giggled and it almost sounded childlike.
You felt yourself growing a little annoyed. “Then where am I supposed to go if not this way?”
“I won’t tell you.” With that he disappeared into thin air once more and you didn’t have it in you to feel surprised about it again.
“Fine,” you snapped in no direction in particular. “Then don’t tell me.”
You continued your way, but from time to time you still heard his giggles and little comments.
“So wrong,” he would say with a chuckle, his voice coming from one direction first and then another next.
“If you’re not going to tell me, then at least leave me alone!”
“But it’s funny,” he argued, suddenly appearing right in front of you, a wide smile plastered on his face. “It’s funny to see you run right into their fangs.”
“Whose fangs?”
“The Queen’s servants,” he whispered right into your left ear, before reappearing on your other side. “The heartlings.”
You frowned in confusion, all of this giving you a headache. None of it made any sense. You just wanted to go home, curl up in your bed and cuddle your cat. But you couldn’t help the weary feeling in your guts, telling you that there was at least some truth to the weird guy’s words.
“So, where would you go?”
“Oh, I can go anywhere,” he replied with a giggle. “They can’t catch me if they can’t see me, right?”
“And if you couldn’t turn invisible?”
“Hm,” he seemed to think for a moment. “Maybe I’d get myself a snack from the gas station?”
You looked at his vanishing form in utter disbelief. “A snack?”
“Or a coke, maybe.”
“You’ve got to be kidding me.”
“Well, I’m not saying you should do that. But you asked me what I would do. And I gave you an answer.”
You felt so unbearably frustrated with whoever this guy was, and yet you still turned around and headed into the direction of the gas station. Maybe you’d get some answers there and if you didn’t you could at least buy a snack and a coke before going home.
When you reached the gas station it too wasn’t quite looking the way you remembered it to. Instead of the brand logo you were so familiar with, the pink neon sign showed an abstract symbol next to letters that you couldn’t read. Just like the rest of the neighborhood it seemed to be completely deserted, but at least the lights in the shop were on.
“Are you sure I can go in?” You asked, convinced the blue haired guy was still around.
“If the door isn’t locked you can,” he replied, his voice coming from further away than you’d expected.
You turned around to spot him sitting in the branches of a tree near the edge of the parking lot.
“Are you not coming along?”
“I doubt my presence would be appreciated.”
You frowned in confusion. “Why?”
“Because I don’t like to pick sides. Besides,” he hopped off the branches but disappeared before his feet hit the ground, just to stand in front of you a second later. “Cats aren’t welcome.”
He pointed towards a sticker on the glass door, a pictogram of a cat crossed out with a thick red line.
“But you’re not a cat,” you argued, following the gesture with your eyes before your gaze settled on him again.
“Am I not?” He tilted his head and a pair of grayish blue cat ears was sitting right there, poking out of his hair.
You stared at him flabbergasted. You knew for sure they hadn’t been there before. You would have noticed such a detail, wouldn’t you?
“Wha—how?”
“Because I’m a cat,” he replied as if it was common knowledge. “Now, if you’ll excuse me.”
With that, he vanished into thin air once more, the last thing you saw of him the bright white of his toothy smile.
“Wait! Am I supposed to go alone?”
“Weren’t you alone from the start?” sounded his reply, but he didn’t turn visible again.
“But what if I need help?”
“I’m sure you will.”
“So how will I know how to find you?”
He giggled. “Find me? You won’t. But should I ever be in the mood to help, I will certainly know how to find you.”
“Wait!” you tried to stop him once more, but it stayed quiet and you were sure he was gone for good this time.
You sighed, focusing your attention on the shop in front of you instead. Even on closer inspection you couldn’t spot anyone, but the staff door behind the cash desk was cracked open, so you assumed that someone was in the back.
With a deep breath you opened the glass door and stepped inside. It felt cramped with how closely the aisles stood together, maybe a little more so than usual. You looked around, hoping that the cashier would come out if you just waited a bit. You picked up a coke and a chocolate bar from the shelves, not because you were in the mood for either, but because the cat guy had mentioned it.
By the time you stepped to the counter and sat down the products on top there was still no sign of anyone coming out anytime soon, nor was there a bell to ring.
“Hello?” You timidly shouted in the direction of the door. “Hellooo?”
“Hello?” It suddenly echoed back from beyond. “Hellooo?”
You rolled your eyes at the staff’s humor. “I’d like to pay.”
“They’d like to pay,” it sounded back, but this time it didn’t seem to be addressed to you.
Before you could say anything else, the door opened and a guy with tousled red hair stepped out. For a moment he just eyed you thoughtfully but then he broke into a goofy smile that made a dimple form on his cheek.
“Welcome.”
“Uh, hi,” you replied awkwardly. “Do you work here?”
He wasn’t quite what you’d expected. Instead of the off-white t-shirts the staff here usually wore, he wore a sheer turtleneck in bright orange and a colorful silk shirt on top that he kept open. He absolutely didn’t look as if he was working here. Nevertheless, you couldn’t help but think that in some peculiar way, you found him attractive.
“Work here?” he repeated, sounding almost a little confused. “No, I don’t work.”
“Uh, then, is someone here who does?”
“Is anyone here who does?” he shouted towards the staff door, passing your question on.
“No, no one,” came the reply shortly after.
“The hare says no one is here.”
“Yeah, yeah, I heard.” You pinched the bridge of your nose slowly losing patience with whatever was going on today. “So, how do I pay?”
“Oh, with money.”
“With—forget it.”
“All forgotten.” He nodded with a bright smile. “Anything else I can help you with?”
“Honestly, I don’t know. I was just looking for my cat and then got into this whole,” you gestured vaguely at your surroundings, “mess.”
“A cat?” His face crinkled with disgust. “Not a blue one, is it? That scoundrel is not allowed in here.”
“Blue? No, Humpty Dumpty is brown.”
“Humpty Dumpty is an egg.”
“What?”
“What?”
You shook your head in exasperation. “Anyway, so I was looking for my cat and then there was this rab—man?” It sounded more like a question.
“You’re looking for a man?”
“I guess you could say that.”
“Hm,” he looked around the store as if he could find him between the aisles if he just searched hard enough. Then he turned to the door once more.
“Changgu, do we have a man?”
“A man? No, no, we don’t have that.”
“I’m afraid we don’t have any in store,” he said apologetically.
“I’m not—I don’t want to buy one. I’m—he was running away. He had white hair and—rabbit ears? And he seemed to be in a hurry. Have you seen him?”
“Ah, you met Hui. Terrible workaholic, really.”
“Do you know where to find him? I think he knows where my cat is….maybe?”
At the word cat his face scrunched up once more, but he didn’t comment on it this time.
“I might know.”
“So, will you show me?”
“Now? I can’t. It’s tea time. In fact, maybe you should come in and have tea with us.”
You frowned in confusion. “But you don’t even know me?”
“Right,” he nodded. “Who are you?”
“Y/n.”
“Y/n. That is certainly a name,” he nodded once more. “I’m Shinwon. The Hatter.”
“A hatter?” You weren’t aware that it was a job that still existed. You’d assumed that the fast fashion industry had more or less let that handicraft die out. Furthermore, “You’re not even wearing a hat.”
“Not a hatter. The Hatter. And my hat—” for a moment he stared into the distance, a deep sadness in his eyes but then he snapped out of it, smiling like nothing happened. “That’s a story for another day.”
The sudden change in mood had piqued your interest, but you decided to respect his privacy and not pry into it further.
“And what is the Hatter doing in a gas station?”
“A gas station? I’ve never been to one.” He didn’t give you the time to question his words, already turning towards the door. “Now, let’s have some tea.”
Maybe it wasn’t the smartest idea to follow this guy to the back. He didn’t seem to be right in the head, though to be fair, you weren’t sure about your own sanity either. After all, you’d chased down a talking rabbit and then shared a walk with a man who seemed to be able to vanish into thin air. Perhaps, a mad hatter in a gas station was on the normal side of things in comparison.
The backroom didn’t look the way you’d expected, though at this point you weren’t sure what you were expecting anymore. The space was completely cluttered with chests and boxes, and all kinds of fabrics and curtains were draped throughout the room. In the middle of it all was a long table which was decked out with way too much dinnerware. In fact, the tea cups were stacked up so high, you almost didn’t notice the guy sitting in one of the mismatched chairs near the end of the table.
“I brought a guest,” Shinwon declared, pointing at you.
“A guest!” The guy jumped up from his chair with a dazzling smile.
Only now did you see the floppy ears that sat on his head, reaching down all the way to his shoulders. They were a light brown, the same shade as his wavy hair, and they looked so soft and fuzzy you kinda wanted to try petting them.
“Hi,” you awkwardly greeted, raising your hand in a small wave. “I’m y/n.”
“That is certainly a name,” the man replied with a nod and Shinwon next to you clapped excitedly.
“Right? That’s what I said.”
You didn’t know what to make of the comment so you decided to just ignore it. “And you are Changgu I assume?”
“Ah, where are my manners?” He rushed over, accidentally knocking some cups off the table that shattered on the floor.
“Yes, Hare, where are your manners?” Shinwon echoed.
“I’m Changgu. The March Hare,” he introduced himself, reaching out his hand to you, that barely poked out from underneath the sleeves of his plaid coat.
“The March Hare?”
He nodded, before leaning in closer as if he was about to share a secret.
“It’s because I’m as mad as one,” he whispered. “I don’t have both ears in the water.”
As if to prove his point he raised one of his ears and let it flop down again.
“It’s oars, Hare. You don’t have both oars in the water,” Shinwon corrected, before ushering you further into the room. “Now, let’s have some tea?”
He pulled back one of the chairs for you while he took the seat at the head of the table. You sat down and stared at the mess before you, unsure how to behave. It didn’t exactly look as if it was set for a tea party (or set at all, for that matter). You felt out of place and it didn’t help that your clothes were still wet. It had almost slipped your mind, but now that you were sitting you felt the damp fabric sticking to your skin again, leaving you with an itchy feeling.
“Tea?” Changgu, who’d taken the seat across from you interrupted your thoughts. He pushed a cup he’d poured in your direction. The other porcelain on the table got shoved out of the way on his quest but he didn’t seem to mind, not even when one of the higher stacks started to sway dangerously.
Unable to watch what was clearly going to end in disaster, you quickly took the cup with a “Thank you” and promptly received a bright smile in return.
Before you could take a sip of the steaming liquid though, Shinwon held out a plate with muffins to you, each one decorated with a small candle.
“Dessert? We also have cake,” he pointed at a ring cake somewhere in the mess. “And biscuits.”
“Then, a biscuit, perhaps?” You agreed reluctantly.
“A biscuit, Hare, quick, a biscuit for the biscuit!”
Changgu nodded eagerly, holding out another plate to you, and you took one of the cookies from it.
But you didn’t get to try that either, because all of a sudden the door was pushed open with so much force, it made you flinch and drop the cookie into your tea cup.
“Ah, not in the middle of tea time,” Shinwon complained, clearly annoyed but not surprised. “What does the Queen want now, Paul?”
For a moment you weren’t sure who he was talking to, but then you spotted the frog that was standing upright in the doorway, dressed in an outfit that resembled a Victorian newspaper boy.
“An invitation,” he croaked, taking a big leap right onto the table, porcelain clinking at the sudden impact. He fished out a piece of paper and handed it to Changgu who took it from his green fingers.
“We got it. Now, shoo, we’re having tea.” Shinwon gestured for the frog to leave with a wave of his hand. “Unless you fancy to join us for a cup?”
“Not particularly,” the frog replied, hopping off the table and disappearing to where he’d come from.
Changgu passed the paper onto Shinwon who took it with the tips of his fingers as if it was something disgusting.
“What is it?” You’d managed to catch a glimpse of the writing and once again had to realize that whatever alphabet it was, you couldn’t read it.
“A party invitation,” Shinwon replied, almost spitting out the words.
"Do you not like parties?"
At your question he broke into a laughter so intense as if it was the funniest thing he'd ever heard.
“Do I not like parties?” He turned to his friend in amusement "Did you hear that, Changgu?"
“Do you not like parties?” Changgu repeated, shaking from laughter himself, his ears flopping up and down at the movement.
You felt awkward and maybe a little upset that you once again weren't in on whatever the joke was.
“Well, do you?” You interrupted their laughter, light annoyance in your voice.
Shinwon's eyes were gleaming when he replied. “I love parties, Biscuit. I love them so much I celebrate all my unbirthdays every year.”
Changgu nodded hastily to support his point. “Every single one!”
“We’re celebrating one right this second.”
You didn't bother asking what an unbirthday was. “Then what’s so bad about this?”
Immediately, Shinwon's face turned dark again. “It's the Queen's party.”
“Then don't go.”
“Don't go, you say,” he repeated with another giggle. “No, we have to go. It's the Queen's party."
After a brief glance at a clearly broken cuckoo clock on the wall he sprung up with so much vigor, his poor chair fell over backwards and clattered to the floor. “In fact, we should go right now!”
Then his eyes got stuck on you.
“You're wet,” he commented as if he only just now noticed the sorry state of your clothes.
“I fell into a puddle.”
“Why would you do that?”
You frowned. “It’s not like it was on purpose.”
The side eye he exchanged with Changgu told you that he still considered it to be weird, but he let it rest.
“Either way you can't wear that to the party. The Queen hates bad fashion.”
“Oh, I won't go to the party, I wasn’t invited.”
Another rush of laughter overcame the two of them.
“It's the Queen's party,” Shinwon repeated yet another time. “Everyone is invited. Hare, don't we have some clothes for the child?”
“I'm not a child,” you argued but neither of them minded you.
“Maybe we have some in the dairy section.”
“Mhm-mhm,” Shinwon nodded thoughtfully and then disappeared into the shop only to show up a minute later with an odd looking suit that he handed to you. The fabric felt cold, as if it'd just come out of the refrigerator and the combination of colors and patterns seemed a little random. But it was still better than the damp clothes that were sticking to your skin uncomfortably, so you took the suit and changed into it while Shinwon and Changgu waited outside.
When you came out again, the two of them seemed to have cleaned up for the occasion as well: Shinwon had buttoned up his shirt and tamed his red hair while Changgu had added a black tie with red dots to his outfit. He hadn’t bothered to tuck it under the collar of his shirt though so it made him look more disheveled than before, but you didn’t point that out.
Shinwon eyed you intently, his brows furrowed as he took in every inch of you. Then he broke into a happy smile. “Oh, it suits you! Isn’t that right, Hare?”
“Exquisitely so!”
You weren’t sure about their assessment but their compliments still made you feel a little better in your skin.
The three of you stepped outside and you would have thought the sky would be pitch black by now, but it still had the same purplish pink colors as before.
“So, where is this party?” You asked as you walked down the street.
“The Red Castle,” Changgu supplied an answer that made you none the smarter.
“Of course,” you mumbled. “Where else would it be?”
Even though Shinwon had been less than ecstatic to go to the Queen’s party, he didn’t dwell on the bad mood. Him and Changgu giggled and goofed around on the way, most of their jokes going past you.
“I’d much rather go home,” you let out a small sigh, barely even noticing that you’d said it out loud.
Shinwon interrupted his laughter to turn to you. “Oh, that’s just the right mindset for attending this party. I too would much rather go home. But,” he playfully nudged your shoulder with his own, “when we all want to go home, it’s almost the same as actually going home.”
You didn’t a hundred percent get the point he was trying to make there, but his words felt comforting nevertheless. Perhaps it wasn’t his words per se, but the consoling smile on his lips and the genuine expression in his eyes.
You shook your head in amusement. “Let’s go home then.”
“Let’s go home!” he repeated with a wide grin, raising his fist into the air and making you giggle.
As you kept walking, you slowly realized though, that maybe that was quite literally where you were headed. You were only a block away from your house now, and the closer you came, the more lively it got on the streets that had still been empty a few hours ago. Approaching your home should have filled you with a sense of relief, but instead it just made you feel queasy.
Your bad feeling about it all proved to be there for a reason. When you turned into your street, you could barely recognize what used to be so known to you. The streetlights were decorated with a weird assortment of red flowers and warning tape, and the whole area was jammed with people (though you weren’t sure if people was the right word for the diverse assembly of beings, some more human than others but none that were human through and through) and at the center of it all seemed to be the tall factory building with its brick walls and the car shop on the first floor. It looked vastly different, the entire front of the building covered by a huge mural painting depicting roses that crawled up the walls, their stems carrying sharp thorns. Still, there was no mistaking it:
“That’s—that’s my house.”
“Oh, how fortunate,” Shinwon exclaimed gleefully. “You wanted to go home!”
“No, but—,” you interrupted yourself, not even sure what to say. Maybe it’d been a little delusional to believe your home would still be your home if nothing else seemed to have remained the same.
“You didn’t want to go home after all?” Shinwon nodded understandingly. “Then this is indeed unfortunate.”
“Very unfortunate,” Changgu agreed.
“I’m just so confused. Why is nothing the same as before?”
“Maybe that’s a question for a caterpillar,” Changgu replied seriously. “They are experts on things that do not stay the same.”
Before you could inquire how you were supposed to discuss this with a caterpillar of all things, you spotted a familiar pair of snow white ears in the middle of the crowd that disappeared as suddenly as they’d shown up.
Without thinking you chased after the white rabbit. You weren’t sure why you were still so keen on catching him. It didn’t seem very likely anymore that he knew where Humpty was. But he was the only one who had already been there when the world was still normal, so maybe he’d also know how to turn it back.
“Why are we running?” Shinwon asked behind you, sounding out of breath. You hadn’t noticed he’d come along.
“The rabbit!” You explained. “I saw the rabbit.”
“Why are we running?” Changgu shouted from behind Shinwon, following as you rushed through the crowd.
“The rabbit, they saw the rabbit,” Shinwon explained in your stead.
You almost expected to lose the rabbit in question again, but then he was suddenly standing right there, throwing a worried glance onto his wrist watch. You abruptly stopped in order not to run him over, causing Shinwon to bump into you. In your relief to have finally caught on, you didn’t pay it any mind though.
“Thank God,” you pressed out, catching your breath.
The man with the white rabbit ears turned to you, seemingly only noticing you now.
“Oh. Oh, no,” he looked a little distressed at your presence before his eyes wandered to your company in surprise. “And the Hatter?”
“And the Hare,” Shinwon added, pointing at Changgu who’d come to a stop behind him.
“So, what do you want?” The man asked, his eyes darting to his watch once more. “I’m in a hurry.”
Shinwon chuckled. “It’s good to take a break from time to time, Hui.”
“Of course, you would say that.”
“My cat,” you interrupted before their discussion could drag on. “Did you see my cat?”
“A cat?” He sighed. “I don’t have time for Yanan’s shenanigans."
“No, no,” Shinwon chimed in. “This cat is brown.”
“I don’t have time for a brown cat either,” Hui shook his head. “In fact, I don’t even have time for this party.”
With that he took off, quickly disappearing into the crowd again.
“Wait,” you shouted after him. You still hadn’t asked him about whatever was going on with the world around you, and he was probably the only person who could know something (and also the most sane one you’d met so far, despite his constant haste and his rather cold demeanor).
“Don’t take it to heart,” Changgu reassured. “In fact, he already lingered longer than usual. Sometimes we don’t hear from him for months. And he doesn’t even spare the time to celebrate his unbirthdays.”
You sighed in resignation. “Still, I had so many questions.”
“Even if he knows the answers, I doubt he has the time to give them,” Shinwon replied comfortingly, though it didn’t feel very comforting at all. “Caterpillars on the other hand have a lot of time.”
You didn’t get why Shinwon too was bringing up caterpillars now, but the two of them had been talking nonsense from the moment you’d met them so it was a little late to start overthinking it now.
Suddenly, the sound of a fanfare cut through the noise of the crowd.
“Oh, it’s beginning,” Shinwon exclaimed, grabbing your hand and pulling you further towards the front, until you were standing in the second or third row with a direct view on what used to be your home and was now something else entirely. "From here you can take a good look so you know whom to avoid."
"The Queen?" you asked for clarification.
"That too. But the Heartlings and Knave as well."
You remembered the former from when the blue cat had mentioned it before, but the knave was new. You didn't get to ask though, because the fanfare sounded again.
A frog, just like the one that had brought the invitation, was standing on a stack of tires in front of the garage door, a scroll in his hands that he unrolled solemnly. He cleared his throat twice before finally addressing the crowd.
“Your Majesty, the Queen of Hearts,” he announced, his voice way louder than you would have expected from a frog of his size.
The crowd cheered more or less enthusiastically and he hopped from the stack of tires. A pack of ferrets came to the scene, quickly pushing the tires to the side. The last one had barely scurried away, when the roller shutter of the garage started to open, slowly disclosing the shop beyond. For a while, all you got to see was the car that was parked right in the center. You recognized the vintage car immediately with its beige finish and the M shaped hood ornament. As the shutter had almost rolled all the way up, it finally revealed a person sitting on top of the car, in just the same spot that Humpty had taken a nap in earlier today. (At least you thought it was still today—with the sky not changing color at all, you were a little confused about the passage of time.)
To your surprise though, it wasn’t a Queen at all. Instead it was a guy with choppy blonde hair wearing a velvet tracksuit. His gaze was fierce and there was something captivating albeit intimidating about his aura. Still—
“Where’s the Queen?”
Instantly, the whole crowd fell silent.
The man in the velvet suit cocked his head, his eyes narrowing in on the guests. “Who asked that?”
Everyone around you took a step away, trying to gain some distance from you. Solely Shinwon and Changgu stuck to your side, but even they seemed a little uneasy. From your peripheral vision you spotted a man with wavy hair next to the garage door straightening out his posture. You hadn’t noticed him before, but he must have been there all along. He pushed back the fabric of his jacket a bit to reveal the grip of a gun that was tucked into the waistband of his pants. You didn’t understand what was happening, but you were smart enough to realize it wasn’t anything good. Your stomach was filled with dread and you instinctively reached out to Shinwon, your fingers clasping onto the hem of his shirt.
“Uh, oh, Biscuit,” he whispered close to your ear. “You’ve really done it now.”
“I said,” the man in the velvet suit started again, this time with more emphasis, as he leaped off the car roof in one smooth movement. “Who. Asked. That?”
The crowd seemed to budge even further away from you, leaving you easily exposed to the man who approached with striding steps.
“You?” His gaze landed on you, making you feel small and helpless. “It was you, wasn’t it?”
He took another step closer, close enough for you to spot the beauty marks on his face, close enough to notice the glow of his skin. “Tell me your name, dear.”
“Y/n,” you pressed out, your voice barely hearable.
“Y/n,” he repeated with a hum, almost as if he was tasting the sound of it on his tongue. “So, y/n, what were you thinking? What made you believe that I’m not worthy of being the Queen?”
The thoughts started circling in your mind. It was clearly a trick question; no matter what reply you presented him with, it would be wrong.
Thankfully though, you didn’t have to give one at all. Before you could even think of saying anything, you felt Shinwon leaning in close to your ear again.
“I’ve got this,” he whispered, stepping in front of you with confidence.
Anxiously, you glanced over to Changgu, who gently took your hand in his, mouthing a reassuring Don’t worry.
“Your Distinctiveness,” Shinwon greeted overly friendly, taking an exaggerated bow.
“Hatter,” the Queen replied, his face contorted in disgust.
“You see, my dear friend is new here,” he explained. “And to make matters worse, they have terrible vision, don’t you, Biscuit?”
You felt frozen, even more so now that the Queen's attention was back on you. It wasn’t until Changgu squeezed your hand, that you hurriedly nodded.
“Very terrible vision,” Shinwon repeated, his voice sounding pitying this time. “Can’t even tell right from wrong.”
“Is that so?”
The Queen didn’t seem convinced as he gave you another once over. You instinctively held your breath, as if that could protect you from his piercing gaze.
“Consider this a warning,” he eventually said, finally taking his eyes off you.
“And you, Hatter,” he turned to Shinwon, “educate your guests right. Wouldn’t want to lose any, hm?”
“Of course, your Noteworthiness; by no means, your Exquisiteness,” Shinwon nodded meaningfully.
“Good!” The Queen’s mood suddenly shifted. He clapped his hands and a grin spread on his lips. “Now, let’s celebrate, shall we?”
He strode back to the car, using stacked up tires to take a seat on the roof again like a Queen on her throne.
You let out the breath you’d been holding, relieved that you’d evaded whatever storm would have awaited you if Shinwon hadn’t been there. You gently tugged on his sleeve to get his attention.
“Thank you. You really saved me there.”
“Oh, yes, Biscuit, that would not have ended well,” he replied with a giggle before his expression grew more serious. “But I have your back.”
You weren’t sure why he’d helped you, after all he barely knew you at all. But you didn't dwell on it for too long. Of everyone you’d met today, if you had to choose just one person to trust, it would surely be him. In all his madness and with all his nonsense, you decided to trust him.
The party proceeded, though it hardly resembled your understanding of the term. There was music, sure, but the mood felt strained. The Queen however didn’t seem to notice or perhaps he simply didn’t care.
“It’s a party,” he drawled. “So, entertain me.”
“Of course, your Highness,” the frog from before hurried to assure. “The dancers, get the dancers!”
A group of dancers stepped forward, wiry figures with white wings on their backs just like those of a swan. Music started to play and they moved to the melody. It was a beautiful choreography but you couldn’t help but notice the way their arms seemed to tremble with nerves. And you weren’t the only one.
“What a pity for them,” Shinwon whispered next to you.
“A tragedy, even,” Changgu agreed.
“He won’t like that.”
“He’ll despise it.”
You looked between the two of them, before your gaze wandered back to the Queen. He looked onto the spectacle with contempt.
“Boring. Show something else.”
Immediately the music got interrupted and a different song played, the dancers changing position and starting anew. The Queen watched for a moment, his lips pursed thoughtfully.
“If only I could make this more fun,” he complained with a big sigh but then his eyes widened as if he’d had a brilliant idea. “Ah! I know! Jack! Get me some firecrackers!”
The frog nodded, relaying the task onto the ferrets who disappeared and showed up seconds later with a red box. The Queen clapped joyfully before he took the box and fished a lighter out of his pocket.
“What is he doing?” You asked Shinwon, your voice barely a whisper.
“Playing a game, it seems. He loves games.”
An uneasy feeling took root in your stomach. “What kind of game?”
“Dodge.”
The game was exactly what it sounded like. While the performance continued, the Queen lit up the firecrackers and threw them at the dancers’ feet, watching in delight as they tried to evade the small explosions.
You felt sick to your stomach and for the first time since you’d fallen into the sewer you truly wished to wake up from what clearly had to be a nightmare. With shaky fingers, you pinched the skin of your inner arm, hard enough to make tears spring to your eyes. But nothing happened. You didn’t wake up and this wasn’t a dream. The dancers were still hopping from one foot to the other, the Queen’s manic laughter drowning out the music they were dancing to. And you just stood there, frozen in place, averting your gaze instead of stepping in.
“That’s insane. How can he be so cruel?”
“He’s the Queen of Hearts, what did you expect?” Shinwon scoffed. “Of course, it was different when—no, I shouldn’t say. Not here.”
The rest of the party continued in the same vein. The Queen had a very different idea of how to stay entertained, it seemed. His games hardly qualified as games at all. If anything they were torture, for those who had to watch and even more so for those who had to play. But he was sitting on his makeshift throne enjoying the show.
“Oh, what a delight!” The Queen eventually addressed the crowd. “I had feared for this party to become a disaster. After all, it was off to a miserable start, isn’t that true?”
Maybe it was just your imagination, but you felt as if his eyes were looking right at you, giving you a warning glare as if to say I remember you. Don’t mess up again.
Panic rushed through your body and you were shaking like a leaf as you tried to withstand his gaze. When he looked away at last, announcing it was time for the grand finale, you felt all strength leaving your body and your knees would have given in if Shinwon hadn’t immediately reached out to steady you. Even when you’d found your balance again, he stayed closely behind you, resting his hands on your shoulders.
“Are you okay, Biscuit?”
You didn’t even bother pretending and shook your head.
“When is this over? When is it finally over?”
“Soon. We only have to make it through the fireworks now. You can hold out, right?”
You nodded weakly and watched with something akin to relief as the ferrets set up fireworks that for once seemed to really be just that—fireworks.
“No one’s going to get hurt, right?” you asked, to be sure.
Shinwon gave your shoulders a reassuring squeeze. “No one’s going to get hurt.”
And his words proved true. The ferrets lit the fuse and you watched with tired eyes as the flame crawled over the bloodstained floor until it reached the fireworks. They shot up with a bang and exploded into sparkling pink hearts filling the sky above you that had at last started to darken. It was a beautiful spectacle and for a brief moment you could almost trick yourself into thinking that it’d been a regular party after all. Almost. While everyone’s eyes were glued to the sparkling sky, your own fell to the Queen again. He was watching the fireworks too, in awe of its beauty, while the traces of his cruel games were scattered all around him. It seemed he was the only winner today.
After a moment he lowered his head to look at you. It was a slow, deliberate shift as if he’d been aware of your gaze all along. His eyes briefly flicked over his surroundings before they landed on you again, a small smile on his lips. Despite the distance you knew exactly what he was mouthing at you.
Beautiful, isn’t it?
Tumblr media
When it was finally over you couldn’t even manage to be relieved. You’d seen too much and you despised yourself for watching all of it in silence.
“Why is everyone just accepting this?” You asked, once the crowd had dissipated and you’d gained some distance to the Red Castle.
“Because there’s nothing else we can do,” Shinwon explained matter-of-factly. “Not yet.”
“What does that mean?”
“It means that it’s not time yet.”
“Not yet,” Changgu echoed. “But soon.”
It wasn’t a very satisfactory reply, but who were you to talk? You’d only been here for a day and it wasn’t as if you’d been brave enough to say anything either. No, you’d looked away much the same as everyone else.
You sighed and followed behind them, slowly realizing that you had no idea where you were headed. It definitely wasn’t the way back to the gas station unless the streets had suddenly swapped places which wouldn’t be the craziest thing to happen that day.
When you asked, Shinwon looked at you in confusion. “To the caterpillar, of course.”
“The caterpillar?”
“You want answers and he has a lot of them. And if you’re lucky a few of them might just match your questions.”
“Is it far?”
“Oh, very much,” Shinwon nodded but then he added, “we’re almost there.”
Eventually you turned into the street with the old theater and realized that that must be where you were headed. You’d always loved it there and had many fond memories of musicals and theater pieces you’d watched there. It was a charming building with a pretty front that you remembered to be adorned with big illuminated signs announcing the shows that were currently running. Now though, it looked sad and abandoned as it laid in complete darkness at the end of the street.
“What happened here?”
“The Queen doesn’t fancy theaters, I’m afraid. He’d rather the only shows that happen are the ones he holds in the castle. Of course it was different when—” Shinwon interrupted himself once more, but then he seemed to remember that you weren’t at the party anymore and that no one was around to hear. Still, he whispered when he continued, just to be safe. “It was different when Hongseok was still king.”
“Very different,” Changgu agreed. “Hongseok loved the theater.”
“He also loved cookies,” Shinwon added.
“And fun rides.”
“And coffee.”
Changgu nodded excitedly. “He handed out free coffee on all 23rd unbirthdays.”
“He did. Every 23rd.”
“The 23rd unbirthdays are always the best,” Changgu explained.
You looked at him in confusion. “Why?”
Now Changgu was the one looking confused. “Because they are the 23rd, of course.”
“Right,” you nodded slowly even though his explanation didn’t actually explain anything. Still, even if it didn’t make much sense, what you did understand was how fondly they thought of Hongseok. You didn’t know if he’d been a capable king, but he must have been a beloved one.
“Why isn’t he ruling anymore?”
Shinwon laughed, as if it’d been a particularly stupid question. “Because now we have the Queen, dummy. There can’t be a king and a queen.”
You wanted to argue that in fact there usually was both, but you doubted that anything would come of it.
The three of you walked towards the entrance of the dark building when Shinwon suddenly stopped in his tracks and swiveled around to Changgu.
“Do you have cash on you?”
“No, no,” Changgu shook his head, turning his pockets inside out as if to prove his point. A single button fell out and clattered to the floor.
“Oh, no. I am afraid they don't take credit card.” Shinwon sighed with a wistful glance at the dark and empty ticket booth before turning to you. “You don’t happen to have any?”
Your gaze wandered between him and the abandoned theater. “What do you need cash for?”
“To buy a ticket, dummy,” he said with a giggle. “Hare, she doesn’t know you need a ticket to go to a theater.”
“You can’t just go in without a ticket,” Changgu nodded.
"No, I—agh, nevermind."
“You’re so funny, Biscuit.”
You didn’t consider yourself a particularly humorous person, but as long as it made them laugh you supposed it was fine. Still, you didn’t get why you would have to pay to go into an abandoned building where there clearly were no shows running. You checked your pockets anyway, but you had nothing except for an old bubble gum wrapper.
“Hm,” Shinwon looked thoughtful. “Well, I guess it will have to do.”
He took the wrapper from your hand, picked up the button from the street and fished a safety pin out of his own pocket. The random assortment of things was then shoved through the hatch of the ticket booth that was meant for paying. Meanwhile Changgu opened the entrance door to the right of the booth which was barely hanging in its hinges.
“After you,” he said with a grin and an exaggerated bow.
“Very kind,” Shinwon replied with a nod and a tip of an invisible hat as he stepped past him into the dark lobby of the theater. You followed suit, giving Changgu a quick thanks.
Somehow the building made you feel weary. It was distressing how it looked as if it’d been abandoned from one second to another. There were coats hanging in the cloakroom and a half eaten bucket of popcorn was laying tipped over on the floor, popcorn scattered around it. The whole atmosphere gave you chills.
Shinwon and Changgu didn’t seem to have any such concerns though. The Hatter went straight for the snack counter, starting to rummage through the fridge that was clearly turned off.
“Coke anyone? Or a limo?” He asked, holding up glass bottles, that almost looked like the popular brands you knew, if it wasn’t for the unfamiliar writing.
He didn’t wait for a reply, already setting them onto the counter.
“Do you think we should bring something for Jinho too? You think he'd want a coke? Or something else?”
“Maybe something else.”
Shinwon nodded thoughtfully. “A water? But that's for boring people.”
“Maybe a water,” Changgu agreed anyway.
“Jinho? Are we—are we still talking about a worm here?”
Shinwon bursted into laughter. “A worm! Oh, he would hate that!”
“Wasn’t it a worm?”
He snorted before turning to Changgu. “A worm, Hare! A worm!” He repeated between chuckles, nudging his friend in the side who’d long joined his laughter.
“We shouldn’t ever tell him that.”
“We shouldn’t. He would hate it so much.”
“He would,” Changgu shook himself in delight. “Maybe we should tell him.”
“We should!”
“So, it wasn’t a worm?”
“A caterpillar, Biscuit. He is a caterpillar.”
Tumblr media
Jinho was sitting on one of the balconies, watching the empty stage. His head was propped up on one of his hands as he leaned over the balustrade, sipping on a small pouch of red ginseng extract. The dim light in the auditorium gave his dark gray hair a blueish, almost iridescent shimmer that made you want to question if it was real. Still, he was most certainly not a caterpillar.
“A lovely theater, isn’t it?” He mumbled without looking up and you weren’t quite sure who he was talking to.
“Very lovely,” Shinwon was quick to agree but he didn’t sound serious.
“You should have seen it in its heydays,” Jinho continued, turning his head to look at you. “It was truly marvelous.”
He spoke slowly, as if his every word was well considered and it made you nervous.
You swallowed around the lump in your throat before you replied. “I’m sure it was.”
“Mhm,” he hummed approvingly, then he turned back to the stage. “I’ve been expecting you. You’re late.”
“Oh!” Shinwon chimed in. “Really? I was thinking we should have left a little earlier.”
“Not you, Hatter,” Jinho drawled in response. “Alice.”
“Alice? Which Alice?” Shinwon looked confused.
Jinho nodded in your direction. “That Alice.”
“I’m not Alice. My name is—”
“Y/n,” he interrupted you with an exasperated sigh. “I know. But you’re also Alice. One does not preclude the other, you foolish rat.”
“What’s that supposed to mean?” You couldn’t quite choose between feeling distraught by the fact that he knew your name or offended by his tone, so you settled for both.
“It means exactly what I said. You’re Alice.”
While you still didn’t get what he was trying to say, Shinwon and Changgu looked absolutely flabbergasted, their eyes flicking back and forth between you and Jinho.
“Our Biscuit… is Alice?”
“The Alice?”
“How many times do I need to say it?” Jinho shook his head. “Y/n is the new Alice. That’s how it’s written in the script.”
“It’s written in the script,” Shinwon repeated in disbelief.
Changgu nodded. “Y/n is Alice.”
“Would anyone please explain to me what’s going on? How can I be Alice if I’m me?”
“Because the script says you are.” Jinho squeezed out the last bits of ginseng extract, before shoving the empty package back into the box that was sitting on the seat next to him. “The script is never wrong.”
“What script?”
“The one,” Shinwon explained unhelpfully.
“The only,” Changgu added.
Jinho took out a new pouch of ginseng, his whole focus on the packaging as he slowly and carefully ripped it open. Your eyes automatically followed the movement.
“I can show you. If you wish to see,” he offered without looking up.
“I—I don’t know. I don’t know what any of this means so I don’t know if I want to see it or not.” You instinctively turned to Shinwon for help, searching his eyes for advice. “Do I?”
He didn’t immediately reply and when he did his voice was unusually calm and collected. “I think you should.”
“Okay,” you nodded slowly before turning to Jinho again. “I want to see.”
He didn’t seem to be in a hurry, calmly emptying the rest of his ginseng extract before getting up from the velvet seat.
“Let’s go to the prop room then.”
“Oh, the prop room!” Changgu looked excited, bouncing on the balls of his feet. “I haven’t gone there since our last show. It’s been a while!”
Jinho led the way out of the auditorium to narrow stairs at the far back of the hallway. A chain with a handwritten sign was supposed to keep visitors out, but Jinho nonchalantly pulled it to the side.
“Careful,” he warned before going downstairs and not without reason. Fabrics, props and costumes were scattered all over the steps and the handrail, making it feel like an obstacle course. While you slowly followed Jinho, carefully not to trip on anything, Shinwon and Changgu seemed almost delighted, hopping down the steps as if it was a funny game. Though, after seeing the gas station’s backroom it wasn’t as surprising that they weren’t bothered by the mess, you supposed.
Once you’d reached the bottom of the stairs, Jinho pulled a small key out of his pocket and unlocked the wooden door to reveal a room, cramped with more odds and ends.
Changgu went right in, purposefully taking a handkerchief from one of the zillion shelves.
“Was wondering where I’d kept that,” he commented happily before stuffing it into his pocket.
Jinho pushed past him with a sigh. “We haven’t taken out the script in a while, and this is how you act? Some adequacy, if you please.”
“Don’t be such a killjoy, Worm.”
Jinho’s head snapped around to Shinwon, giving him a death glare. “Worm?”
Shinwon just shrugged lightheartedly. “Right, Caterpillar. My bad.”
“These kids,” Jinho shook his head before turning his attention back to you. “Let’s take a look, shall we?”
He took your hand and pulled you along to the far back of the room, where a wooden chest was covered with a bunch of colorful fabrics. Jinho shoved them aside to reveal the little metal lock that he opened with another key from his pocket, before pushing up the lid of the chest. It was empty except for a stitched booklet that looked like a regular manuscript for a musical or a theater piece. Jinho took it out and thumbed through the pages until he abruptly stopped, his finger pointing to one of the lines.
“We’re here.”
You stared at the scripture written in the same unfamiliar letters as everything else in this world.
“I can’t read that.”
“Ah, right.”
Jinho closed the booklet briefly before opening it again, his fingers still marking the page. When you looked this time, you were surprised to find that it was written in letters you were able to read. Your eyes scanned the lines Jinho was pointing to, and you were overcome with a feeling of disbelief.
Caterpillar: We’re here. Alice: I can’t read that. Caterpillar: Ah, right.
Below that, the sentences seemed to be incomplete, only bits and pieces that were scattered on the paper.
“How is that possible?” you asked and right as you spoke the words started appearing in the script.
“It’s the script,” Jinho explained calmly. “That’s what it does. It documents and it predicts. It assigns roles and it decides the plot.”
“That’s right,” Shinwon nodded meaningfully but your eyes were still glued to the page, watching as everything they said formed on the paper.
“And as you can see, y/n, your role is Alice,” Jinho continued. “At least for now.”
“For now? What does that mean?”
“Well, you’re the replacement,” Changgu stared into the distance with a nostalgic shimmer in his eyes. “The old Alice is no more.”
“Did they…die?”
“Died? No, no, he is fine.” Shinwon pressed out between laughter so hard, he had to hold his stomach. “He would whine so much about this. I can practically hear his voice: ‘Don’t say something like that! Don’t jinx me!’ So funny.”
“Wooseok fulfilled his role,” Jinho explained calmly. “So now he is only Wooseok, in the same way you were only y/n before you became Alice.”
You sighed. “I don’t remember applying for the role, though.”
Jinho rolled his eyes. “Very funny.”
“So, what does it mean? Is me being Alice the reason that I’m stuck in this weird parallel universe?”
“What’s a parallel universe?” Changgu whispered, nudging Shinwon in the side.
“Surely the opposite of an unparallel iverse,” Shinwon whispered back.
“Ah.”
Jinho didn’t pay them any attention. “Not exactly. You’re stuck in this weird parallel universe—”
“That’s the opposite of an unparallel iverse,” Changgu interjected.
“—because you followed the rabbit through the Looking Glass. He was supposed to directly bring you here—but well, there’ve been some circumstances.”
“I didn’t follow anyone through a looking glass though.”
“Mhm, not purposely,” Jinho hummed. “You fell right in.”
“The sewer?”
Jinho scrunched his face in disgust. “Not the sewer. The reflection. The mirror image on the water surface.”
“So if I fell in—can I fall out again?”
“Oh, it doesn’t work like that, foolish Alice.”
“Foolish Biscuit,” Shinwon echoed, but his voice had a fond undertone to it.
“You have to fulfill your role first. Then you can go back.”
You nodded slowly. That at least meant there was a way back. “So, what do I have to do?”
“Right, that’s the tricky part, dear Alice. The script never reveals the full plot until it happens.”
“Are you saying I have to fulfill my part without even knowing what that is?!”
Jinho shook his head and skipped to a later page in the script. “We do know some things.”
The page was almost blank, only scraps of a conversation readable.
Queen of Hearts: Alice?!           You betrayed me Queen of Hearts:      What have you done to me?     hurt so much Queen of Hearts:   I'm dying
You stared at the words, an uncomfortable feeling spreading in your stomach. You had an inkling but you still asked anyway.
“What does this mean?”
“You will kill him,” Shinwon whispered. “You will end his reign.”
“No.” You shook your head. “I can’t—I can’t possibly kill anyone. Can’t someone else do it?”
Jinho shook his head. “It has to be you. He won’t die if it isn’t you.”
“But—how would I do it anyway?”
“I'm sure there are plenty of options. The King would know. Poison, maybe.”
Poison. You shuddered at the mere prospect of it; the body cramping up and lips turning purple—a gruesome thought.
“I can’t.”
“You’ve seen his cruelty. He doesn’t deserve any better,” Jinho said calmly. “And it will happen anyway. The plot may not be all written out yet, but that which is written will happen with certainty. Unless, of course, you die before that. Then a different Alice would have to take your place.”
“Unless I die?”
He shrugged. “If you’re careful that shouldn’t happen. So don’t worry about it too much, just follow along.”
Your head was spinning with all of this. Of course you wanted to go home, but could you really kill someone? But what if it was the only chance to go back? And if what Jinho said was true then was there even a use to think about what you wanted? It would happen, whether you resisted it or not. The only way out was dying, so there wasn’t even a decision for you to make, not really.
“Okay, fine,” you pressed out eventually. “I’ll fulfill my role. I’ll be Alice.”
A small smile tugged at the corners of Jinho’s lips. “I knew you would say that.”
“But how would I even get close enough to do it?” You asked Jinho while he locked the booklet in the chest again. “Does the script say anything about that too?”
“Not too much,” he admitted. “But I am convinced a chance will present itself. The Queen has his eyes on you.”
His words had you incredibly worried. You’d seen his cruel games and you’d felt his piercing gaze on you—just the prospect of having to be in his presence again terrified you.
No, the Queen didn’t seem like the type of person you’d want to have the attention of. You would much rather be invisible than to be seen by him. Yanan surely wouldn’t be afraid of him; he could just turn invisible if things got dicey. You still remembered the cat’s cheeky smile before he’d disappeared on you. In fact, it was ingrained so clearly in your brain, you almost thought you saw it in the corner of the room. But when you blinked nothing was there.
You shook yourself out of it, focusing back on the problem at hand.
“But he doesn’t know, right? That I’m Alice?”
“No one knows,” Jinho reassured. “Only a selected few. The Rabbit. And the people in this room. Though,” he threw a quick glance at Changgu who was playing around with some props on a shelf, “who knows how long the Hare will remember. He tends to be a bit scatter-brained.”
“So, what now?” You asked once the three of you were outside the theater building again.
“Hm, I guess we need to go see Hongseok. I’m sure he’ll have some poison for you,” Shinwon replied and you almost flinched at his words. How could he say it so casually, as if it wasn’t a big deal? As if you weren’t supposed to kill someone with it?
“Off to the White Castle we go,” Changgu agreed. “The King is the best address for anyone seeking leach or lotion or poison or potions.”
“Hare! You can’t call him that. Not here.” Shinwon reprimanded him, his eyes searching the streets around you cautiously.
“Right, right. The Un-King, the Used-To-Be-King, the No-More-King,” Changgu corrected. “Either way, chemistry has always been Hongseok’s strong suit.”
You weren’t sure if brewing lethal poison was really part of regular chemistry, but you’d been curious about Hongseok anyway after everything they’d said and it wasn’t like you had a better idea.
“Wooseok will be there too,” Shinwon looked at you with a small smile. “Maybe you’d feel better after talking to him.”
“Yeah, maybe.”
Tumblr media
You walked through the city for a bit. It was deserted again, no traces of all the people who’d still been out a while ago to attend the Queen’s so-called party. As if the sky had decided to match your mood, it had turned all black by now, lit up only by the crescent moon that was hidden behind thin clouds. Time seemed to be a little off here, and you thought you could understand the Rabbit a bit. Who wouldn’t be in a constant hurry if time passed almost randomly?
“Where’s everyone?” You eventually asked when you turned into yet another street that was completely void of people.
“It’s after the curfew,” Shinwon explained.
“Yes, the curfew,” Changgu was quick to nod. “Once the sky turned fully black, it's for the best to hurry back.”
“If the sun has fully set, it is time to go to bed,” Shinwon added.
“If the sky is in the moon, the knave of hearts will get you soon.”
“But Hare, that’s not how it goes. The moon is in the sky.”
“Hm, hm, right, that’s not how it goes,” Changgu repeated thoughtfully before his eyes widened with an epiphany. “Ah! If the moon is in the sky, fear the red Knave’s dreadful eye. For if he spots you in the street, a dire fate is what you’ll meet.”
He looked at you with a proud smile after he was done reciting his little poem, but you couldn’t really share his enthusiasm.
“So, we’re not supposed to be outside right now?”
“You’re so smart, Biscuit!”
“Then shouldn’t we go inside? And who’s the Knave anyway?” you asked, the term feeling a little familiar.
“Of Hearts,” Shinwon replied. “The Knave, that is.”
“The Knave of Hearts?”
“Yes, that’s right. He’s the Queen’s right-hand man.”
“You might have seen him at the party,” Changgu chimed in. “He has a scary look. And his birthday is in January.”
“Why does that matter?” You asked in confusion.
“Oh, it doesn’t. But it means he has an unbirthday today and instead of celebrating he’s surely out on patrol.”
“You must know me very well,” a deep voice suddenly sounded from behind you, making Changgu’s ears perk up in interest.
A man stepped out of the darkness of a house entrance, and the moment the dim light of the street lantern fell onto him, you recognized him as the guy with the wavy hair from the party. You remembered him well—mostly because of the gun that was surely tucked into the waistband of his pants even now.
“If it isn’t the Knave of Hearts himself,” Shinwon exclaimed with a delighted tone. “It’s been so long, Yuto, the last time must have been when—right, you probably wouldn’t want to talk about that. It was a dark day for your Queen after all.”
“Hatter,” Yuto replied with a straight face, his tone void of any emotion. “Always a pleasure.”
Then his eyes fell onto you.
“I see you still have your visitor with you. I would say their little scene today wasn’t a source of amusement for the Queen, but that would be a lie. In fact, Hyunggu was very amused.”
His words made a cold shiver run down your spine and you automatically took a small step back.
“Oh, yes, our Biscuit is a very humorous person,” Shinwon replied, his voice still light but he held out his arm in front of you protectively.
Yuto huffed a laugh before glancing at the dark sky. “Still, violating the rules isn’t a funny matter. Why aren’t you in your cozy little hideout yet, Hatter?”
“We’re on our way!” Shinwon said.
Changgu nodded over-enthusiastically. “Yes, yes, on our way. Almost home!”
“Better hurry then. I won’t be as kind next time.” With that, Yuto turned around to go his way, leaving you with an anxious feeling in your stomach.
Shinwon let out a small sigh as soon as he was out of sight. “That was a close call. Now, let’s hurry, let’s hurry. I wouldn’t want to run into him twice. Not a very funny fellow.”
Shinwon and Changgu didn’t seem particularly shaken by the encounter. After a few steps they were back to their giddy selves. You on the other hand couldn’t stop yourself from checking each dark corner for a person hiding in the shadows.
When you spotted the ferris wheel towering above the surrounding buildings you started to suspect where you were headed: the amusement park. You couldn’t remember the last time you’d been there, but just like the theater it was a place with fond memories to you.
Once you reached the entrance, Wonderland written on the archway in weathered letters, you had to find that there was none of the usual hustle and bustle. The park laid before you abandoned and still, solely the lights of the castle in the middle of the artificial lake flickered weakly in the distance. What used to be a vibrant, lively place looked washed out now, the fun rides and booths overgrown with patches of moss and their colors bleached out by the sun.
“Aaaand we made it,” Shinwon said as soon as he stepped through the entrance.
“But we’re still outside?”
“Outside but not really. The curfew isn’t in force here.”
You looked around in confusion. You didn’t really see a reason why anything would be different on the grounds of the amusement park. “Why not?”
“Because the White King’s protective spell takes effect here. It keeps heartlings from entering. Even the Queen can’t enter,” Shinwon explained.
“The Queen isn’t as powerful as he’d like to make everyone believe,” Changgu added with a nod, as he headed straight for the shabby pedal boats in the shape of swans that were floating on the calm surface of the lake.
He pulled one a little closer to the pier, gesturing for you to get in. When you set foot onto the boat it started to wobble dangerously and Changgu held out his hand to steady you, not letting go until you were safely sitting on the bench in the back. Shinwon got on next, taking one of the two front seats and Changgu hopped on last, after untying the rope from the metal loop on the pier. The two of them set to work, pedaling the little boat towards the small castle. As a child you had always dreamed of going there, but it hadn’t been open to the public, the pretty front just a means of decoration. Now though, there was no fence separating the little island from unwanted visitors, and the two of them easily steered the boat onto the narrow shore.
Changgu got off first, tying the rope around one of the two flagpoles that were positioned left and right of the castle. You remembered them to fly flags with the logo of the amusement park but now they were white, depicting a silver pentagon with a snowflake in the middle. The emblem of the White King, you supposed. The three of you walked the cobblestone path up to the entrance of the castle. Now that you were standing directly in front of it, it seemed way bigger than the decorative fake in your memory. It probably was bigger.
Shinwon didn’t bother knocking on the double wing door before pushing it open and stepping inside. The lobby was all white, from the marble floor to the chandelier and it almost felt blinding.
“Hello?” Shinwon yelled into the building with the same tone you’d had at the gas station earlier today and you wondered if it was on purpose. “Hellooo?”
“Eh?” A honey blond head of hair appeared on the second floor, leaning over the handrail. “Shinwon? Changgu?”
Changgu raised his hand in a tiny wave, a dorky smile on his lips. “Hi.”
“What are you doing here?” The guy asked as he walked towards the stairs and made his way down. “And who’s your friend?”
“Y/n,” you introduced yourself before anyone could beat you to it and say Alice or Biscuit.
The guy came to a halt in front of you and only now you realized how incredibly tall he was. There was nothing intimidating about him though as he looked at you through big doe eyes. His hair was combed back in neat waves and he was wearing a sweater vest that was loose even on his lanky frame.
“Wooseok,” he introduced himself and held out his hand in a greeting. In comparison to everyone else he seemed surprisingly normal.
“So, what are you doing here?”
“We’re looking for Hongseok,” Shinwon explained, slipping out of his shoes and leaving them by the entrance as if he was visiting someone else’s apartment and not the prop castle of an amusement park. Changgu did the same though and you realized Wooseok was wearing slippers as well, so you too toed out of your shoes. Surprisingly enough, the marble floor didn’t feel very cold beneath your feet at all.
“He’s in the kitchen,” Wooseok nodded towards a corridor to his right.
“Alright!”
Shinwon sauntered down the hall with the casualty of someone who’d been there a thousand times before and Changgu followed along just as naturally. You were a few steps behind them, Wooseok next to you. He kept glancing over to you curiously but didn’t say anything.
“Hongseok!” Shinwon greeted just a bit too loudly as he threw open a door to reveal a spacious kitchen.
A man with curly brown hair looked up in surprise, his hands covered in flour and a white apron tied around his waist.
“Oh, Hatter. And Hare.” He went over to the sink and rinsed his hands before his gaze fell on you. “And another guest?”
“Yes, this is—”
“Alice!” Changgu interrupted his friend, visibly excited about sharing the news.
“Alice?” Wooseok’s head snapped around to you and he stared at you with wide eyes. “So, you’re—you’re not from here?”
You just looked back at him. You’d already been told that Wooseok was the old Alice, but it hadn’t even occurred to you that maybe he too wasn’t from this universe.
“Now, now,” Hongseok walked over to you, wiping his wet hands on his apron. “We shouldn’t corner our new Alice like that. What’s your name?”
“Y/n.”
“A pretty name,” he smiled and gently squeezed your hand. “I’m Hongseok, the White King, but you might have heard. Wooseok was our last Alice, but his part has already played out.”
“Yes, yes,” Shinwon interrupted. “Biscuit already knows all that. But what we don’t know yet is how to kill the Queen of Hearts.”
“Oh,” Hongseok’s eyes widened in surprise. “Is that your part?”
“Seems like it,” you murmured, not withholding that you weren’t exactly fond of it all.
“Mhm, so it’s that time already. It’s really coming to this.” With a swift movement of his hand he motioned for the others to leave. “Give us a moment, will you?”
They did as they were told, though Wooseok lingered a moment longer before actually stepping out and closing the door behind him.
“Do you want to drink something? A coffee? A hot chocolate? I have cookies too.”
You were inclined to say no, but when you gave it another thought you realized you hadn’t eaten anything in quite a while and could also really use the comfort of a hot drink. Hongseok prepared a hot chocolate and a plate of cookies for you, while you sat down at the small table in the corner of the room. Once he was done he sat down across from you, his eyes calm and gentle. After how Shinwon and Changgu had talked about him, it shouldn’t have surprised you, but it still amazed you how different his whole aura was compared to the Queen of Hearts. Where the Queen had been intimidating and rash, Hongseok radiated kindness and patience.
“Here,” He mumbled after a moment, nudging the plate of cookies a bit in your direction to encourage you to try some. “They are good, I promise. I only just made them this morning.”
You hesitantly took one and started to nibble on it, only to find that Hongseok had been way too humble—it tasted amazing.
“See? They are good right?” He looked a little proud when you nodded. “So, do you want to tell me about it? About what’s written in the script?”
In all honesty, you didn’t. But it seemed like he wanted to help so you told him about everything that you’d found out at the theater. Through it all, Hongseok listened calmly.
“So now,” you concluded your story, “I have to find a way to actually do it.”
“Well,” Hongseok nodded slowly, “here’s the thing: the Queen of Hearts is not easily harmed. Not just anyone can—it has to be Alice. And even then, there’s only one weakness.”
“Which?”
“The heart.”
“The heart?” In a way it seemed plausible for that to be the weakness of someone called the Queen of Hearts, but at the same time it seemed a little too simple.
“Yes.”
“How do I do it then?”
“Mhm,” he got up from his chair and walked towards a glass cabinet with a zillion little bottles and jars inside.
“I know of two ways. One is this,” he held up a little test glass with a dark red liquid in it. You swallowed around the lump in your throat.
“Poison?”
“It's the blood of the Jabberwocky to be precise. But poison describes it just fine. Once it gets into your body it will pollute your blood and ultimately make your heart stop.”
Maybe it wouldn’t be that hard. You could just add some to his food. Still, the thought of being able to feel it invading your blood circulation made your skin crawl. “And the other way?”
“I doubt you’ll like it.”
“What is it?”
Hongseok sighed before opening the drawer beneath the glass cabinet. He pulled out a silver dagger so radiant it almost looked white. He held it out to you and you hesitated before you stood up and took it with trembling fingers. It was lighter than you’d expected and ice cold to the touch.
“If you stab him with that—but it needs to be right in the heart.”
That was definitely worse. You would never be able to actually go through with something like that.
“I couldn’t,” you pressed out, holding it out in your open palm for Hongseok to take it back.
But he gently closed your hand around the hilt again.
“You don’t have to use it. But keep it, just in case.”
“There won’t be a case.”
“All the better.”
Hongseok had invited all three of you to spend the night in the castle, so you wouldn’t have to go out during the curfew again. The room you’d gotten was fancy and as white and shiny as the rest of the castle’s interior. In the middle of it was a soft bed that smelled like vanilla and fresh snow and just waited for you to slip under the covers, but you felt restless. You paced the room, unable to tune out that there was a dagger and a little heart shaped pendant with poison laying on your nightstand. This definitely wasn’t how you’d expected your day to end. It seemed to have gone downhill from the moment you’d stepped foot to that cursed party, but when Shinwon had talked about the Caterpillar having answers, there’d been a sliver of hope flaring up inside of you. Now, there was nothing left of that.
Even though you’d gotten your answer on how to get back to your world, you didn’t feel relieved in the slightest. All you could think of was the horrifying things you’d have to go through before finally going back. And the worst part was that you didn’t seem to have a choice, not really. Even if you decided it wasn’t worth it and you’d just stay—what was written in the script would happen either way.

okay so, this takes place a day after sonic prower
happy wednesday everyone 👍
@starrjoy @passionartx
----------------------------
Sonic took a deep breath before stepping out onto the stage, waving at the audience full of mobians and humans alike, all clapping and cheering for him.
He smiled at everyone as the security guards silenced the crowd so he could speak. He sighed and straightened his posture.
“I’d like to start this off by thanking everyone who allowed me to come speak today,” He gestured off to his right, running through his pre-made script in his mind. The crowd clapped again, but quieted down much more quickly.
“The reason I asked to give a speech is because I wanted to address a certain, uh, rumor that’s going around on social media.” He explained, swallowing a lump in his throat.
He glanced behind him at the wall that would project everything he wanted to show for a brief second, as if he was expecting it to fall apart then and there.
He cleared his throat and looked back to the crowd, “It’s come to my attention that a lot, and I mean a lot, of people have been saying bad stuff about my buddy, Tails.”
There were a few quiet murmurs throughout the crowd, but Sonic didn’t focus on them. He wasn’t here to listen to the crowd anyway.
His ear flicked when he heard one of the producers click a button, which meant the first bunch of articles were now being projected behind him.
Checking over his shoulder to confirm it, he frowned at the news headlines before pointing back at them.
“As you can see, a common theme here is that Tails is the reason it takes a bit longer to take down Eggman.” He gritted his teeth, he still couldn’t believe that people were blaming Tails for all of this.
If anyone should be blamed, it should be Eggman. Y’know, the guy who’s trying to take over the world.
Nobody should be blaming the kid trying to save it.
“I’ve come here to end those rumors once and for all.” Sonic made sure he kept his voice clear as he spoke.
He wanted everyone to fully understand what he was about to say.
“Tails is not, and never will be, responsible for however long it takes for us to defeat Eggman.” He glanced over the crowd, watching as the onlookers talked amongst each other. Some would look up to the big screen, then immediately turn back to whoever they were talking to.
“Especially,” Sonic spoke again, waiting until most of the crowd was looking at him before continuing, “not when he’s being held hostage.”
More shushed arguments were exchanged, but the hero continued on with his speech.
“And, to whoever had the genius idea to make this comment,” He paused to gesture to the wall behind him as the projector changed to show an image of a reply to one of the other articles.
‘It’s probably fake. Sonic just keeps the kid around for his smarts, he doesn’t actually care about that thing! They don’t even have the same last name.’
“I’d like to publicly announce that since yesterday, December Fourth, my name has been legally changed to Sonic Prower. Approved and signed by Judge Nicholas Howard.” He silently thanked Amy for helping him with this speech, he could only imagine how much of a train wreck it would be if he’d done this by himself.
“From now on, I don’t want to hear or see anyone saying Tails is at fault for Eggman’s destruction,” He said as the projector clicked off, “that is all.”
As he walked off the stage, he heard a few hesitant claps that soon turned into the whole crowd cheering.
He just hopes they'll listen to what he said.
He glanced down at his communicator when it started vibrating, smiling when he read the contact of who was calling him.
‘micro buddy💛 is calling..’
Sonic quickly tapped the green phone button, a wide grin on his face when he saw the two tailed fox on the screen.
“What was that about?!” Tails yelled, glancing between the communicator and what the hedgehog assumes is the T.V.
“What?” Sonic asked, though he knew what the kit was referencing.
“That!” The fox grabbed the side of his head with his free hand, “wh– you– Sonic!”
“Ain’t a big deal, bud,” The teen shrugged as he walked down the street, “can’t have them blaming you like that for Eggman’s stunts.”
“You didn’t have to do that, Sonic,” Tails shook his head, “it really wasn’t that bad. I-I can handle it.”
“I found you curled up on my bed crying because of it, Tails.” Sonic shook his head, “sure, maybe you can deal with it, but that doesn’t mean you should. Nobody deserves that, especially not you.”
He looked down at his communicator when he heard sniffling, frowning when he saw his brother scrubbing at his eyes, “Hey, dude, need me to come there?”
“No, no,” Tails shook his head, “it’s fine. I’m fine, it’s just–” he took a deep breath to even out his breathing, “unexpected. And a little overwhelming?”
“You sure?” The hedgehog raised a brow, glancing at the other civilians around him, “‘cause I can be there in just a second, pal.”
“No, really, it’s fine Sonic.” The kit sat down on his sofa, a small, genuine smile on his face, “thanks. For, y’know, all of this.”
“‘Course, bud,” Sonic smiled back, “s’what best bros are for.” He winked at the fox, earning a fit of light laughter for it.
“Yeah, alright,” Tails shook his head, “let me know when you’re heading back here next. I’ll make some chili dogs for you, as a thanks.”
“Ya don’t gotta do that, li’l bro,” The teen snorted before putting on a fake deep-in-thought face, “but~ if you plan on fryin’ those dogs for me..”
The fox rolled his eyes, “You say that as if I cook them any other way,” there was a big smile on his face, “I know how you like your chili dogs, big bro.”
“Alright, alright,” Sonic laughed and held up his free hand in a mock defense, “how ‘bout I come over next week, then?”
“Mmm, I dunno if I can fit you in then, Sonic.” Tails hummed, his smile turning into a smirk, “you might have to come in next month.”
“Don’t mess with my heart like that, little buddy,” The hedgehog said with a fake pained tone, dramatically placing his hand over his heart, “you’re killin’ me, bro.”
The kit laughed and looked over his shoulder, “well, I definitely have enough for you. Just let me know when you’re gonna come over ahead of time so I can have them ready when you get here.”
“Sure thing, li’l bro!” Sonic said, giving a two finger salute.
“I gotta get back to work,” The younger said as he turned back to his watch, “I’m assuming Amy’s gonna call ya. Tell her I said hi!”
The teen rolled his eyes, “You know, you could just come over and tell her yourself instead of staying inside all day.”
“Sorry, can’t hear you!” Tails stood from the couch, making his way into his workshop, “I think you’re breaking up!”
“You said that these things were built well enough so that wouldn’t be an issue?” Sonic questioned with a raised brow, smirking at the other’s shocked look.
“Uhh,” The kit looked around and shrugged, “I don’t have another excuse. Byeloveyou!”
The line clicked, signaling Tails had hung up.
Sonic sighed, a fond smile on his face.
“Love ya too, li’l bro.”
