One random thing that I love is the tireless effort of birders/ornithologists to try and phonetically render all the bird calls into text in an accurate manner. I am so bad at processing sounds that I could literally never do this. Like how many times would you have to listen to that bird call before deciding which letters to place in what order??

I have been challenging myself to listen to a bird call, try and write down my translation, then look up the accepted birder one to compare… let’s just say I am not fluent in bird

Penny stardewvalley makes me so sad because she's SO sensitive to, like, basically everything you tell her (telling her that you can't stand children while two children are nearby is a pretty lousy move but -1500 friendship?? being a jerk to other characters' faces typically loses you about 50 points, and if you choose the option labeled "creepy" and ask Leah for a kiss in her 2 heart event she physically hits you and kicks you out of her house but that's only -100 friendship…) and so if you want to befriend her it's a whole lot of lying and tiptoeing around her feelings (2 hearts: George was right but saying that makes her feel bad. 6 hearts: her food sucks but even if you try to be polite about it she feels like a failure; only a bald-faced lie pleases her. 8 hearts: saying you don't want to be tied down with a family loses you a little bit of friendship and she's only happy if you say you want kids) and I can't help but think she's a product of her environment. She lives in a trailer with only her mother, who gets drunk every night and has something of a temper. Penny's like a skittish rescue animal who won’t even come out from hiding under something unless you leave her lots of treats

#stardew valley #penny sdv #I didn't mention the SECOND opportunity to lose 1500 friendship with her #because I think if you go out of your way to date her and then tell her that you don't like her that way then you deserve it #but yeah she's super volatile #i was upset for a little bit after reading that one post saying the ‘right’ answer in the 2 heart event is ableist #like nooooo not my favorite farming game :(#except that in the context of several other things in the game it becomes clear that winning someone over #does not always mean doing the right thing #looking directly at how the easiest way to befriend shane and pam is by enabling their alcoholism #which is framed as a harmful thing even if the characters themselves like it #you have to lie to befriend other characters too like with sam dropping his egg #and you can lose a little friendship based on preferences like sebastian asking about what books you like #though to be fair if i saw someone who could potentially be cool and i found out that what they like was stuff im not into id also #lose interest a little #anyway those are all examples spread around on different characters #penny's got it all at once #me post

Hey.

Kim teaching Harry how to skateboard and Harry teaching Kim how to roller skate.

Harry thinks he fucking sucks at first because Kim gets the hang of roller skating pretty quickly. As it turns out, skateboarding is a lot harder than roller skating.

I don’t know where I’m going with this. Um. Kim still prefers skateboarding because of the technical aspect and risk factor but he’s surprised he enjoys how chill roller skating is.

Harry enjoys skateboarding because a) time with Kim as a teacher and b) oh wow a challenge? Your physical instrument loves challenges. You will conquer this with the force of your—what do you mean this is more the centipede’s thing? Holy shit no wonder Kim’s so cool

#cotl #cult of the lamb #but seriously though this update looks really cool as somebody who enjoys the town building part of this game #i love the idea of a secondary way to get followers through sex (which is WILD to type out) as opposed to just finding them during runs #and stuff like distilleries and what seem to be new rituals look super rad #not too excited for the ranged weapons though. i never got a lot out of the spells because of how they broke the pace of combat #i didn't jump back into the game when the DST crossover introduced that new difficulty mode but i might do a new run when the update drops

#To Shape A Dragon’s Breath #aroaessidhe 2023 reads #this is really really good i loved it!#the chapter titles are all like snippets of a story. or like sentence fragments that match up. which is cool #it is definitely more about being indigenous in a coloniser institution than Dragon School - not Super dragon heavy if you want that #I suspect the subsequent books will get into that when she gets big enough to ride and stuff #t’s also def YA! i’ve seen a few ppl assume it’s adult and be like its very young :( but like. I mean its perfectly reasonable for a 15yo m #definitely a Lot of racism and colonialism which is not fun to read! though it's still through a YA lens. there was def a part of me that #was imagining consequences of the narrative as if it were an adult novel #on that line of thought - at the end a lot of it is kind of solved by them going to the king and he's is like. oh no racism is happening?#that's bad i'll deal with those people! which felt like. a little simplistic. but maybe the easiest way to end the narrative for book 1 -#I don't think the author ACTUALLY is going to portray the king as a Good Guy throughout the series - it just felt conveniently like -#a simple YA solution to some very big and complex elements? if that makes sense? (but again - it is YA so it's allowed I suppose!)#some of the worldbuilding (like all the science learning) is probably setup for next books - we don’t really see any practical application #the romances are also subtle and not Overbearing In Book One which i like - leave some space for the series!#also her getting fanmail from a 10yo mixed race girl who looks up to her 🥺#anyway. i really loved it!#oh also it reminded me a little of leviathan. i guess just the steampunk/time period/european culture....#To Shape A Dragon's Breath

A small tool carved from a fruit tree seed. Energy to power the enchantment has seemingly run-out long ago, and the method of recharging is unknown - but, based on the appearance, it's very likely that this was once used for detecting magic. Usually, looking through the glass center would highlight areas of higher magical energy concentration present in the viewer's environment, even if they were otherwise obscured to the naked eye. While this form of enchantment itself is highly advanced, the craftsmanship of the item is far less neat or complex than what might be typically seen in similar devices. It may have been made as part of training/practice, or as a hasty replacement for a previous tool that had broken.

#written from the perspective of some fantasy traveler who checks all of the local thrift-stores and lost & found places for every #town they visit - looking for interesting items and documenting them or something #In reality - just another one of my goofy little avocado pit carvings lol. Still working on inlaying little stones in them and stuff #I don't really have the tools to make super intricate stuff but doing little plain swirly patterns is still fine enough lol.#WORKING ON NEW POLL ADVENTURE also I know I know it's been months.. I have been Busy and struck by the evils of summer #But like I mentioned in the previous one I do want to at LEAST finish the quest with the egg lol #ANYWAY.#Things like this would plausibly exist in Nanyevimi (my fantasy world) but wouldn't be very common as - like mentioned- this would be an #extremely advanced enchantment. REALLY advanced mages could sense magic around them (to varying degrees of pinpoint accuracy of location #) without even having to use any external device. But for a majority of people there's really no way to know someone is using magic near #you unless you either see visual proof or if it's strong enough to feel effects from it (since magic is kind of like radiation in that the #higher energy/more of it youre exposed to the more it damages you/can make you sick/etc.) and even then most people would just be like #'hmm why do I feel so nauseous and bad out of nowhere?' likely wouldn't directly think to link it to magic. Thus the only really reliable w #way isto just hone your senses over like 500 years as you become an expert mage - OR use enchantments like these. But a 'sense magic' encha #ntment is not as common as a just 'magic is not allowed here' enchantment. If you wanted to prevent magic from being usedin a space #it's easier to just put up a broad barrier enchantment around that space than to have some sort of Magic Sensor to pick out if it's being #done and then handle each individual case of it . etc. etc. These sort of things can have their uses (especially for people investigating #things or trying to be secretive about detecting something etc.) but are less common - especially in this form (where visuals are used. itd #be more likely to jsut have like 'piece of metal that gets warm or cool depending on magic nearby'.) ANWAY so this is why it's a notable #object. Though a majority of the realm is not very magic literate - if you were a researcher or a mage and found this at a pawn shop you'd #definitely be like 'oohhh!! :0 inch resting... ' if not you might just be like 'oh cool necklace!' lol #also love the quick 2min ''costume'' for the image of it being used. literally just 'wrap yourself in scarves from the waist up' and slap o #a wig and ears lol #on this blog I guess since it's worldbuilding related and technically art.. maybe more like crafting? I should have a crafts tag lol.. hmm

visited a dr who filming location yesterday (la ciutat de les arts i les ciències, which was used for "smile" in s10!) - pleased to report it looks as cool irl as it does in the actual episode :)

I'm debating if I want to get into writing Hermitcraft fics to post on AO3.

Like, I write Hermitcraft fics for myself, they're super unpolished and 90% are abandoned because I know I don't have to finish them and I wanna do a different prompt. Though 7/10, I return to the older ones to add a little more to it because *brain rot*.

But like... What if I did write with the intention to post?? I have AUs that are story exclusive, where they aren't flippin animals. It'd be fun and then at least my AO3 account wouldn't just be blank.

year of art - 2023

This was a year of big challenges! Finishing my WIPs, artfight, half of whumptober, and winning nanowrimo. I posted less, but I feel like the quality improved with some active study in paint techniques and composition. I'm cheating on the wheel by using my realism art for the last two but I didn't finish any of my fanart projects in either month...

I don't actually know what to resolve for 2024! (￣▽￣*)ゞ There's still a million things I need to improve, of course, especially complex compositions. I think I'd also like to go back to simpler pieces, like doodles and plain character shots. That's very contradictory~ I'll just make up goals as they come.

I like the idea that Oscar is just really light on his feet so they just assign the role of stealth on him. Lime has been jumpscared too many times when being in the middle of a conversation with Mochi and all of the sudden Oscar is just there and makes a quick joke off of what someone just says spooking them. “Dude I’ve been here for like 8 minutes.” He’s just suddenly there, running gag sort of deal.

Doesn’t Oscar also accidentally find out Mochi is a witch? She’s talking witch things with Lime in the greenhouse witch hut and they hear a sneeze and both say bless you and he’s just there taking notes.

THIS IS A COOL IDEA BUT I THINK POST-TIMESKIP OSCAR WOULD BE TOO OP WITH THIS TRAIT!!!!! since he eventually gets the ty-lee type of abilities where he can fuck you up with the right jab, sneaky oscar would be too powerful...90% of fights would be over before they even begin, all you need to do is distract the villian for 2 seconds for oscar to get behind him

#also! worth noting that oscar doesnt ACCIDENTALLY find out mochi is a witch like lime did. he actually deduced it on his own #after months of observations #and forced her hand in a sense to admit it #(by getting himself in trouble)#(oh no! if only there were something super powerful and amazing that could save me!)#worth noting it was actual real danger but he had enough confidence in his conclusions and assesment of mochis character #that she wouldnt let him die #she definately gave him a fucking scolding afterward though #and when she tries to erase his memory he lowkey blackmails her with his own life #(ah! but if you erase my memory ill just get into trouble again! im just too curious of a soul! and you wont be there to save me next time!#mochi stressed out #he would #and THEN hes like (cmon please ill be good. i want in on the cool magic stuff)

Fun fact: Dimetrodon was not a dinosaur. It's not a reptile at all and is way more closely related to mammals than anything else. It's a synapsid! Dimetrodon was called a "mammal-like reptile" when it was first discovered, but then we realized that was wrong.

All the tour groups in Springfield should be very proud of me for how well I refrained from sharing all my fascinating Lincoln facts.

#there were so many school groups!#a giant one came in RIGHT AFTER i entered lincoln's cabinet room #part of me was screaming 'children i NEED to tell you about all these idiots and their insane drama!'#a smarter part of me understood that would be super weird #so instead i regaled different individuals of my own traveling party after we had the room to ourselves #then at lincoln's tomb we lucked out in getting there during the ten minutes of the day when school groups weren't there #which meant we got a personal tour from a guide who seemed thrilled to have grown-ups to talk to #he and my dad chatted about fishing for a long while in the entry #it didn't feel disrespectful because it totally felt like the kind of conversation lincoln would have understood and joined in on #and then we went on our way but the guide then chased us down to share all the fascinating lincoln stories as we went along #(shout-out to lefty you were great)#and then a school group found us so we made a graceful exit #but outside a teacher was explaining to a different group about how robert was significant in his own right so he's buried at arlington #and the RESTRAINT i showed in not immediately informing them that he was present at three presidential assassinations! it was rather heroic #and then when we toured lincoln's house the guide (who accidentally made it clear he was a revolutionary war buff)#(which made it a bit hilarious he was stuck with lincoln)#asked for questions before we started and someone asked about lincoln's 1860 election campaign!#aka one of my SPECIAL NICHE AREAS OF OBSESSION!#you cannot imagine how desperately i wanted to tell him ALL ABOUT seward and thurlow weed #anyway it was fun to go back now that i actually know stuff about lincoln #but it was also a bit frustrating because now i know how much they leave out #(though there was cool new info and artifacts)#(the blood-stained piece of laura keene's dress was very morbid and very cool)#also it reminded me that i still have that book on the 1860 election i've yet to read and the hype is so real #presidential talk

If they ever do a milgram anime they should make it a musical or something as it’d both fit with the canon songs and lean into the symbolic theming of the original series
