I bring a First Contact drabble when I should probably be asleep! Feel free to add to this, but do heed the warnings. Story is below the cut!
Warnings: Implied endometriosis, menstruation, free-bleeding, g/t, language barriers
Word Count: 307
It was those painful cramps again. Clutching at the pillow, all you could do is writhe in pain as your organs contracted. You suspected what it was for a while, but since you’re nowhere near a human doctor to get a laparoscopy, a diagnosis isn’t feasible currently.
The giant red mech who found and adopted you awoke from their slumber, obvious from his movement. He sluggishly stumbled to where your little bed was, eyes widening at your form. Guess the sight of you fully woke him up.
“Hurt?” is all he asked. It was the only word either of you could understand. The navy blue mech, his name was Skids as you recall, taught you some of their language Neocybex, but you struggled with pronouncing the words. When he found out that you could speak a language, it took him a few minutes of talking to you before the both of you could communicate without the language barrier. Something about him having a superlearner ability.
Regardless, the mech knew you were in pain. He just wanted to confirm. It was too painful for you to speak, all you could do was bury your face into the pillow and suck a breath through your teeth.
The mech left the room quickly, door opening and shutting. He must’ve gone to the medics based on how quickly he sped off.
You were fully aware of the fact that you’re currently free bleeding into the clothes the mech got for you. Do they even know what hydrogen peroxide is, or have anything that can clean blood stains? At the very least it wasn’t that very nice and flowy dress that white mech with the swords got you. For now, you just wait for the mechs to check in on you, and get a rude awakening about certain aspects about human bodies.

The Awakening
Season 3 let's goooooooooo
These Fire Nation cells are absurdly spacious.
I do love that Momo's first reaction is kisses.
Not a cell. Oops.
Well that was confusing. I was arguing so vociferously that the SWT weren't pirates and then they go and gank a ship.
Mai girl get it! Questionable taste in men, but I love to see a lady getting exactly what she wants.
Mai: "how are you?" Zuko: *existential dread* Mai: "babe. Shut up."
Aang says he's the only one who's completely out of it, but Appa's behind him in full faceplant mode.
Actually, by the hair growth standard established by Zuko, Aang's been out 5 days at most.
Season 1 bitchy Katara is back again. I hate season 1 bitchy Katara.
I'm impressed by how much of these characters' identities is tied to their colour palettes. I see all these water tribe guys walking around in reds and blacks and I have no idea who I'm looking at.
Aang's eyes are back to brown this episode.
I love that Katara has no idea how she healed Aang. Superpowered does not mean superlearned. So much more believable than supergenius tweens.
It's the old ladies! They're wearing croissants on their heads. Why not.
This is a cool way to do exposition. A royal proclamation narrating a flashback.
These Dai Li don't know shit about loyalty huh.
SONG! HI SONG! I MISS YOU!
CORNY BABY & FAMILY! HI CORNY BABY & FAMILY! I DON'T MISS YOU! My guy why haven't you unpacked yet.
Given the welcome Zuko gets from the Fire Nation crowds, I'm thinking the exact cause/terms of his banishment were never made public? They're hyping him up like a wrestling entrance. That doesn't track with someone known to be honourless.
I want whatever's in Bato's bowl. Those noodles have him mesmerised. He's staring at them like they're telling him the secrets of the universe.
Are you telling me that Appa successfully landed on the deck of one of these ships without sinking it?
I love how Gaang's reaction to everything going wrong is to go find their dad.
STOP GOING ON ABOUT THE INVASION PLAN. IT WON'T WORK. STOP.
"Yep! The whole world thinks you're dead. Isn't that great!" Sokka. TACT.
Sometimes Sokka's brain gets too far ahead of itself.
Poor Aang. Not many people whose deaths are wrongly cause for celebration live long enough to see those celebrations.
How do the topknots fit inside the helmets?
This is silly beyond words. It's a two second throwaway gag but they're so into it.
Aang saying "I hate not being able to do anything" to the girl whose whole existence was not doing anything until recently is certainly a choice. And honestly, wasn't Season 1 Aang's whole point not wanting to be the Avatar? Actual responsible adults are handling the problems for once. He should be ecstatic.
I just realised this Fire Nation disguise ship plan means there are people in the Southern Water Tribe who know how to run coal powered ships. Neat.
One of the things I really love about Avatar is how much love they put into the side characters. This guy on the left is a nameless mook, but in the three to four lines of dialogue he gets, we see a world of political and bureaucratic headaches and a bunch of normal, humanising emotions (who hasn't been angry at that one coworker who can never be bothered to email?). The writers didn't have to give him that much personality, but they did!
Also, how often do Fire Nation ships get captured, if two pieces of bureaucracy not lining up causes this guy to jump to that conclusion, rather than think the bureaucracy messed up?
Someone in the Fire Nation has invented extra buoyant metal.
Turtleducks are scared of Azula. Turtleducks are good judges of character.
An awful lot of this episode is flashback footage.
Toph is a missile launcher. This is all I wanted out of life.
For the first time ever, Aang gets to play the role that Sokka plays in every bending heavy battle.
Since when can Katara do bending moves this big?
Sokka once again harnessing his ability to speak the opposite of what he wants into existence.
They said they passed through the serpent's pass a few days ago. Clever foreshadowing I completely missed.
Don't you love it when all your problems cancel each other out?
Aang. This is not the hill to die on. Also please don't throw tapestries around in a room with unguarded candles until you can firebend.
Wow Aang is just taking all the wrong lessons from this. And he's stealing Zuko's lines.
Turns out the Firelord is just some guy with an unfortunate goat beard.
Katara finally gets a chance to be her age, complete with nonsensical emotions and misdirected anger. I hate bitchy Katara but I love seeing her expressing the root of that bitchiness. And I love how illogical it all is, and that she acknowledges that! Emotions ARE illogical and messy!
Contrasting Hakoda winning Dad of the Year with Ozai setting off every alarm bell known to man is a choice. A really good choice. But wow. Not subtle.
I knew Azula always lied, but to her own dad/Firelord too? That's a dangerous move.
Aang. What are you doing. Stop.
Leave the door open. Peak sibling move.
In a turn of events that should surprise absolutely no one, Zuko's been played like a fiddle by his sister and is now as trapped as ever. The surprising part is that Azula thinks she can get away with lying to the Firelord too. Don't know how that's going to go for her long term.
So much for me saying the Avatar universe doesn't do ghosts. This season opener is surprisingly backwards-looking.
No offense to ghost Yue, but I think the saving the world she's referring to is the time she and a massive fishman saved the world, not strictly Aang.
How did they get past the blockade and find the right island?
I cringed at Katara's knee slide.
How are they standing on that island or breathing the air if it's hot enough to do that?
Final Thoughts
...what was that?
Seriously. This episode was a disorganised and aimless mess with the occasional gold mine of characterisation bobbing around. Did the writers not have a plan for what would happen after season 2 ended? This episode feels like the writers had as much plan as the characters did. If I was feeling charitable, I would say that this episode was a hot mess as a metanarrative commentary on Aang and the world's state, but I'm not feeling charitable. I think this episode was just a hot mess.
First, the good bits.
I liked that Sokka was very in character. We've seen before how he can run away with an idea to the point that he forgets to mind the human element. This episode's Sokka felt very much like Sokka. I liked that the beat up Sokka quota was replaced with 'Sokka dares the universe to play chicken and actually wins for once.' His optimistic characterisation this episode didn't grate like his inexplicable optimism did in Ba Sing Se, because here he has a reason to be happy. He's got his dad and a plan. Being around his dad and their people has done him good.
I like Toph the Ballista.
I like the noodle hypnosis.
I loved Katara's emotional blow up. It doesn't matter how noble or important the cause, leaving your kids for a cause is still leaving. I love that she points out how illogical her emotions are being. And I love that Hakoda creates a no-judgement-all-comfort-safe-to-rant zone for her. She's been waiting to do that for a while, and some of it came out at Zuko last episode, so it's been established that she's at boiling point. Fun fact: Katara has now had emotionally fraught venting sessions at Hakoda, Zuko, and Jet if you squint. I don't know what to make of the fact that the show has grouped these men into the same category of 'safe for Katara to vent to.'
I liked a couple of the throwaway gags, and the throwaway characters.
I liked the framing of Zuko's reintroduction to his father. Great use of angles and shadows. We've had two seasons of build up to this guy as the Biggest Bad, and the scene of Zuko kneeling in the throne room while Ozai paces around and delivers the world's most menacing praise felt big enough to be the crowning glory of that payoff. Especially contrasted to the loving father daughter reunion of equals it was interspersed with. But...
The bad bits.
Why did they immediately undermine two seasons of hype and all of the episode's menace by showing the Firelord as a gullible idiot who can't spot a bold-faced lie coming from a tween? I am legitimately pissed off that they defanged him as a threat so soon after introducing him. And I don't think showing that Azula can successfully lie to the Firelord builds up Azula as a threat - I think it also undermines her, because it's a stupid move. This episode could have introduced the biggest bad and reinforced the threat posed by last season's antagonist. Instead, it completely neutered the biggest bad and made Azula look like an idiot. I am actually mad about this.
Other stuff I didn't like: Aang's whole deal. Of course he was going to lose his mind and not be ok about what went down in Ba Sing Se. But he's never this dismissive of his friends, and a huge part of his early character is the fact that he would absolutely love it if some qualified adults stepped in and did the job he was unwillingly born into. Aang this episode felt self-centred and out of character.
Zuko's usually not this dim. I had figured out the angle Azula was going for by the end of the turtle duck pond conversation. Why can't he figure out for himself why Azula has redirected the potential blame if Aang is found to have survived?
The pacing felt off. The A plot flipped between action set pieces and emotional stuff. The B plot was purely talking. But the action set pieces felt out of place in an otherwise quiet episode. I get that you need something to interest the 8 year olds hyped up on sugar who only want explosions, but I think this episode would have been a lot better without the 'Aang almost drowns but gets a pep talk from a couple of ghosts who say exactly what everyone else has already said to him for two seasons but for some reason Aang listens this time and it works.' Why couldn't we have had a quiet episode?
Speaking of, why are Roku and Yue randomly popping up? Last time Aang talked to Roku, it took a trip into the Avatar state and the destruction of a very stupid general's whole army base. The ONLY person who's talked to Yue since she died is Sokka, and that took a magic swamp. I just don't get it. I don't get why they were there, why they said what they did, why those particular words in that particular order worked on Aang when no one else's words were getting through. I don't get why hiding out in the Fire Nation is the plan of choice over chilling with the Southern Water Tribe (other than because the plot says no responsible adults allowed).
The action piece with the Snekky Boy was fun. Even if what set it off was contrived (which it was), I think it was a fun watch and the only action the episode needed.
This episode was also so dark that I spent more time contemplating how much I really need to clean my screen than watching stuff happen.
I got so pissed off at this episode that I totally forgot about Mai. Go Mai! I am WEAK for romance arcs that boil down to 'Girl sees boy. Girl wants boy. Girl gets boy." Go Girl! Like I said above, questionable taste, but if it's what she wants, then congrats on getting it. I love Azula noticed and is like 'my resident goth appears to be broken.'
I have decided that Toph carved an underground harbour like the refugee station on Full Moon Bay and stashed all the water tribe ships in there, because those ships are too pretty to scuttle.
If I could surgically remove that scene between Katara and Hakoda and insert it into some other episode, I'd never watch this one again.
#atla#avatar: the last airbender#avatar the last airbender#The Awakening#unlike my s1 & s2 DVDs this one isn't bilingual#I can only conclude that the Fire Nation hate the French

Top Six Habits of Super Learners

Top Six Habits of Super Learners To be a super learner is the most important ability you need to succeed in 21st century. In the age of technological innovation, keeping ahead depends on constant self-education, a lifetime mastery of new models, skills and ideas. In a world that is changing very fast, the ability to acquire a new skill as fast as possible is quickly becoming a necessity. The good news is, you do not need a natural gift to be better at learning anything new even when you have a full-time job. A lot of poly-maths (people who have surpassed in diverse pursuits) — including Charles Darwin, Leonardo da Vinci, and the Nobel prize-winning physicist Richard Feynman, claimed not to have extraordinary natural intelligence. We all have sufficient brainpower to master a new skill, we use the right tools, approaches, or apply what we learn precisely. Almost anyone can learn anything, with the right method. Better learning ways can make the process pleasant. The key to rapid skill gain isn’t difficult. If you aim to learn a new skill to advance your career this year, some of these habits can be helpful for you. Super learners read a lot What reading is to the mind, exercise is to your body. It provides us the right to roam the expanse of space, time, history, and offers a wider view of ideas, concepts, emotions, and knowledge. Your brain on books is active, growing, changing and creating new connections and different patterns, depending on the kind of material you are reading. Highly successful learners read a lot. In fact, most successful people share this affection for reading, they don’t see reading as a burden but as an opportunity to better their lives, careers and businesses. Elon Musk grew up reading 2 books a day, says his brother. Bill Gates reads 50 books per year. Mark Zuckerberg reads one book every two weeks. Warren Buffett gives 5 to 6 hours per day reading 5 newspapers and 500 pages of corporate reports. In a world where information is the new currency, reading is the most reliable source of constant learning, knowledge and getting more of that currency. Super learners view learning as a process Learning is a journey, a discovery of new knowledge, not a target. It’s a fun lifelong process, a self-directed and self-paced tour of discovery. Following any topic, idea or new mindset needs not only keen observation but more essentially, sustained curiosity. “A learning journey is a curated collection of learning assets, both formal and informal, that can be used to acquire skills for a specific role and/or technology area,” wrote Sonia Malik of IBM. Hey. PSST. Mad engineer/superlearner Swiss. He has ADHD, and can learn almost anything at a scary fast rate, and is constantly pushing himself to improve and learn new disciplines and new skills. If he’s not doing something with his hands or his mind, he’s not happy. If anything needs fixed around the ministry, you call him...but also be prepared for it to explode or be fixed in a way entirely too clever for its own good. He also jumps around between 50 different interests.

not sure if I ever talked about Helix and Betelgeuse here, so I'm gonna give them a nice lil masterpost of their own
first off is Helix [they/them]!
Helix is polite and follows orders well enough, but sometimes gets distracted. They work as a scout, and often can do other jobs when needed by virtue of being a superlearner. Likes learning about organics; afraid of dying in space.
their sort-of mentor is Betelgeuse [xe/xem]!
Betelgeuse is grumpy but exceedingly loyal, and notices details better than most. Xe isn't a huge fan of talking about xyr past. Likes space exploration and being taken seriously; does not like bugs.
They have an almost Bee-and-Puppycat-esque relationship - Betelgeuse gives Helix orders and Helix, being xyr Ward, follows, but at the same time Helix often finds out-of-the-box solutions and courses of action that can end up being better than playing it serious and by-the-book... when they can muster the courage, that is.
here's some size refs ft. altmodes!
(rough draft of their lore under the cut, as well as some maybe outdated and mostly Helix-centric lore pictures, and some doodles)
Helix used to be a courier on Cybertron - they would deliver mail, packages and the like, and they were very, very good at it.
(they didn't know at the time that they were a superlearner, and they didn't really care. being a courier made them happy)
when they were eventually conscripted as a government courier by the Elite Guard (with reluctant consent) they asked very few questions, having been a courier long enough to know "what's in the boxes isn't your business", but overhearing some of the whispers within the halls ignited their curiosity...
and when they started peeping in on classified missives, they caught wind of various in-progress cover-ups, classified projects, war crimes - all of which their deliveries had for so long facilitated
horrified, they continued their duties while continuing to sneak peeks (and then learning quickly how to make their deliveries appear untouched) and quietly contemplated what to do... leaking the information directly to the public would only lead to denouncement from on high and a lifetime in the stockades, but something, anything, had to be done!
bereft of options, they formulated a plan, and waited for the perfect opportunity...
when they finally were scheduled to deliver a very important dossier - a list of prisoners held within the stockades, complete with mugshots, serial numbers, and lists of the various "research" they'd been put through - they changed course, fleeing the planet in a rented shuttle
(before they'd pulled this stunt, they made sure to figure out how to scramble the ship's signal and disable any identification measures the rental service might have installed, so they couldn't be tracked)
as quickly as possible - albeit hindered somewhat by an inability to make supply stops due to increased paranoia - they traversed to Decepticon space, hoping with the information they carried that at least someone would listen. of course, this still took some time, and it wasn't long before the energon stores they'd hidden began to dwindle.
when at last they came across a patrolling warship, they hailed through an open comm line, begging them to hold their fire, blearily claiming they had crucial information - with proof! - regarding the Autobots and what they were hiding
they were hauled aboard, severely malnourished, and spent much of their time aboard the ship in the medbay, regaining their strength while stasis-cuffed to a medberth, asking many questions and receiving no answers
repeatedly they pleaded for an audience with whoever commanded the vessel, saying they had very important information to relay, but no one spoke to them. the dossier had been confiscated when they were brought in - did the captain already know about it? did they believe what was in it?
in their isolation, they began to panic, fearing they'd made the wrong choice would be terminated - but wait, then why go to the effort to keep them alive? were they going to torture them, or imprison them, or experiment on them like the Autobots did to their prisoners? even if they did belive the information to be true, what use did they have now, other than - by the Allspark, the Decepticons were going to use them as a bargaining chip, weren't they? all this effort and still they'd end up in the stockades anyway.
doubt and paranoia gnawed away at their sense of security and self-worth. they were an unarmed Neutral (no way could they align with the Autobots now!) in Decepticon space - when their information inevitably made it to Megatron, their usefulness would be at an end, they were sure they'd be terminated
what they didn't expect was for the ship's medic to give them a series of little tests - mostly solving odd and complex puzzles, like figuring out how to repair a damaged mechanism that was seemingly pristine at first glance
eventually, another senior medical officer began bombarding them with questions, and after a few more cycles of no one speaking to them, their outlier ability was diagnosed
when it was first explained to them, their first reaction was "I though everyone did that!!" and upon hearing that only an extremely small percentage of the population had their ability, they were relieved! they were useful enough to keep alive!
that relief was quickly eclipsed by anxiety when they were released from the medbay and escorted to a holding cell on New Kaon, which was then coupled by fear when they were given a sudden audience with Decepticon high command
after they proved the dossier they'd smuggled was legit, their spark was spared (phew!) and they were given the opportunity to renounce the Autobots and join the Decepticons, put their skills to use against the corruption they so boldly acted against
politely but no less eager, they agreed, and took the rite of the deceptibrand not long after
their anxiety never dampened, though - they were always a timid rule-follower before, and such a brazen act of defiance coupled with cycles of relative isolation and paranoia had well and truly shot their nerves. being around much bigger, more powerful warframes all the time left them with very few spaces in which they felt safe, their polite self-preservation distancing them from everyone in an attempt to remain alive and unharmed
signing up to make courier runs for the Decepticons was their attempt to regain a semblance of normalcy, but the often followed-through threat of ambushes coupled with their being an Autobot fugitive only seemed to worsen their condition, and after a psychiatric evaluation they were assigned to an assistant-specialist role instead, proving their worth through working with others, only leaving their stationed compound when they received new orders
eventually they gained some semblance of respect - their processor was proven sharper than any blade, truer than any sniper scope - yet still, many Decepticons are not ones to openly or frequently give accolades (without some trace of dishonesty, self-interest, or smarm), especially when they're being shown up, so Helix's anxiety remained, often worsened by the occasional threat (ex. you're lucky you've got powerful people looking out for you, smartaft. I could be the best [profession] again real easy, all I'd have to do is snap you in half.)
at this point is about when Betelgeuse comes in
xe was made originally by the Autobot government not long before the war started. xe was given a spark n all that, but had many additional codes implanted (by the government, of course) that would interfere with xyr emotional range and capacity to question xyr orders - an intelligent, living spy satellite who was unerrantly obedient, the perfect tool against the Decepticons
a good portion of xyr duties was to analyze the information xe received, in order to compile a succinct report for high command, but this was the fatal flaw in their plan - eventually xe started over time to agree more with what the Decepticons were doing, and when xe made this known (high command seemed only to acknowledge their concerns with little emotional response) xe began to notice, through starting to spy on the Autobots instead, an increase in the number of times "reprogramming" was mentioned in reference to xem
xe decided, then, to strike out, and with xyr prior experience with trashing comms networks, caused the entire Autobot high command communications grid to go dark for two whole cycles - which may not sound like much, but on the precipice of war, it certainly gave the Decepticons an opening
xe then pinged the Decepticon comms network, providing proof of xyr actions and requesting asylum, which after awhile became a request to join them
after joining the Decepticons, Bej did primarily espionage work, being a seasoned hacker. though the emotional-supression codes never completely went away, xe did start to feel more openly bitter and angry - mostly towards the Autobots, but eventually it crossed over to coworkers, too
Helix was sort of a different case, though. their timid politeness and overall fear of the people around them awoke a sort of soft spot in Bej, especially after xe witnessed the extent of their abilities. xe applied to take Helix on as a sort of apprentice/ward and got approved for it, therefore the two of them began working on missions together and bonded a little bit - Bej became Helix's mentor and friend, and Helix helped Bej open up a little bit
xe's still rather strict with Helix at times, trying to make them less a "former Autobot" and more of a proper Decepticon, but is mindful of Helix's breaking point(s) so xe doesn't burn them out
(again, this is very much a rough draft, so this may not line up with the tfa timeline and/or may have some inconsistencies. I wrote all of this on a late night many months ago)
and the images, outdated as they may or may not be:
...and some doodles, as a treat for coming this far (thank you btw /gen)

hey, you guys! how are you all? we have a lot to catch up!! so i got my grade 12 result. i have got 97.25% and have decided to pursue Psychology. also, i am finally 18!! yayyy!!
my college is still not decided even though i have got into some of the top universities here. but i have decided to decline the offer of admission to go there because it won't be a wise financial decision and also those universities are in different states and i don't want to move away from home. so, currently i am waiting for cut-offs to be out for the top universities that are on a commutable distance from my home. hopefully, i will get into a good college.
i am currently doing a free course on Coursera on 'Buddhism and Modern Psychology' and I love this course so much. also, i am doing a paid certification course called 'Become a Superlearner® 2: Learn Speed Reading & Boost Memory'.
so, how are you guys?? what have you guys been upto?

Thursday, November 19th, 2020 - January LSAT
I cannot believe I got a 160 on my LSAT practice exam because I was very tired. LR (-7), AR (-2), RC (-12), LR (-6). Unfortunately, I thought I was making major gains with RC (weakest area). So, I am going to start employing these tips I gathered from a long list of successful LSAT takers who told me:
1. Read for structure: how does the paragraphs relate to each other...highlight the main point/purpose of each [Visualization; turn the passage into a visual storyline or movie]
2. determine whether the passage is to 1) inform, 2) explain, or 3) dispute [typically identified by the author’s tone from the first paragraph]
3. decipher the author’s perspective from the character’s [ highlight only the author’s]
4. acknowledge shift in ideas: but, however, moreover, additional, contrary

RC Question Types: **identify the subject of the question stem (is it the author or character) then match an answer to that person in the passage**
Main Point: either generalized summary or final point of the author
Inference: facts of the passage most likely equals the answer (refer back to the area of the passage where the term is or rely on memory)
Organization: ask is the passage doing this?
Title: similar to main point/overview of the passage
Mentioned Detail/Must Be True: facts from the passage; common trick is that detail is mentioned but is not at the place in reference
Author’s purpose: how does the quote relate to that particular sentence and section; always reflect back to confirm answer [beware extremes]
Weakeners: identify the main point of the sentence in evaluation and termite which outside information will weaken that point
