Mercutio: Shit.
Benvolio: Wait, two?
Paris: Yeah?

Romeo and Juliet (1968) directed by Franco Zeffirelli cinematography by
Mid90s (2018) directed by Jonah Hill cinematography by Christoper Blauvelt
A few years ago I did a presentation on Romeo and Juliet in which I had to compare its themes with contemporary issues. One of the things I discussed was the derogatory way that the play's young men talk about women. For example, the play opens with jokes about rape, and Mercutio uses his wit to belittle women regardless of whether or not they are in the scene with him.
I compared this with dialogue in Jonah Hill's film Mid90s (2018). Hill defended the homophobic and misogynistic language used in his film for its authenticity in portraying the way that actual adolescent boys speak, calling toxic masculinity part of the “connective tissue” that makes them feel part of an exclusive group. He said, "...it was done so intentionally to hold a mirror up to how people in this generation grew up, and the changes we're having to make, and the wrong lessons we've learned. To me, they speak so aggressively about women and gay people, ...that is how it was, and I thought it would be way more disrespectful to change history than to show it just as it was, and let the audience see how ugly it feels."
Anyway, the comparison was mainly just an excuse to juxapose these stills because anytime I see a group of boys sitting on steps it reminds me of Montacrew.

y’all gotta let benvolio be a bitch more. Let him be a bitch, it’s his natural state. he’s not naturally a voice of reason or a sensible braincell holder,,,,, he’s a lil shit and he deserves to be a bit of a dickhead little boy

Is “à la vie, à la mort” mainly a platonic vow of loyalty in French?
Huh, good question. I looked it up and Collins’ Dictionary defines it as “for better, for worse.” Literally it means “unto life, unto death” or simply another way of saying “toujours” (forever). In the context of the show, it’s a platonic we’ll-be-best-friends-forever type of vow among the Montacrew…with an elegant but ominous waltz melody as epic foreshadowing of the tragedy to come. For my English version, I rendered it as a toast: “Here’s to life, here’s to love,” etc.

bad shakespeare ideas for no reason
romeo and juliet edition
Capulets are goth and Montagues are minimalist. this is the only reason for their rivalry
Everyone is in period accurate clothes except the background characters. Romeo, Juliet, the Montacrew, Tybalt, ect, are in doublets and juliet wears a hood. The citizens are in leggings, jeans, and t shirts. It is not mentioned by anyone.
Everyone is cross dressing, or played by an actor of the opposite gender.
Juliet dresses in 2000s twee style clothes
Rosaline is relevant. That’s it. She’s mentioned outside of act one
The rivalry is caused over something petty. Like Marvel vs DC. They bring it up during every fight.
There is overly dramatic music playing almost 24/7
Benvolio and Mercutio wear matching clothes the whole time. (Well most of the time. Because, well, yknow)
Tybalt doesn’t have a sword but instead has a spear for no apparent reason.

I’m currently writing a R&J fic taking place in the 1950s from Benvolio’s POV, and I realized that the Montacrew dynamic is just that one vine:
Mercutio: do you ever want to talk about your emotions, Benvolio?
Benvolio (lying through his teeth): Not really.
Romeo: I do.
Mercutio: I know, Romeo.
Romeo: I’m sad.
Mercutio: I know, Romeo.
