The 1917 Officers’ Club is back at it with another event!  This is our second year producing an issue of The Wicked Times for your delectation and we couldn’t be more excited to share it with you!

because i can't escape the brainrot, here's a post comparing wednesday (2022) and wicked (2003) but it's mostly just wenclair and gelphie

(also, tagging @lionydoorin !! hope u enjoy this!)

obviously, the most blatant, in-your-face comparison is when wednesday and enid first become acquainted with one another in the first episode. the song 'what is this feeling' from the wicked musical is when galinda (who will later become glinda) and elphaba meet, and are forced to room with one another. the song is supposed to be funny, a sort of parody of the old musicals from the rodgers and hammerstein days, where, instead of love at first song, it's "loathe" at first sight. (the article "Queer Conventions in the Musical Wicked" is where this analysis comes from, and it's a wonderful analysis!) but ultimately the song lists all of the traits that they hate about each other without really getting to know one another so it's all superficial things. i think this can be used in wednesday and enid's first meeting as well as the fight they have later on. the one where enid leaves to yoko's room. (there's not really a moment here that parallels the two, so this will have to do for both.)

as a brief side tangent (but also still keeping with the theme); it's hard to not see the parallels and comparisons between wednesday addams and elphaba thropp. (enid and glinda share some parallels but not as much as these two) elphaba is a witch, who has incredibly powerful abilities, and she's incredibly blunt, very outspoken about what she's passionate about, which is usually justice. she's awkward, and she's not a very good people person (mostly because people fear her or mock her,) and, funnily enough, elphaba does mention that she has a "vision almost like a prophecy," but this vision of course is about the people of Oz celebrating her death. it's all very reminiscent of wednesday's character as a whole. this is not even mentioning the fact that in the number 'dancing through life,' elphaba goes to the dance, and she has a very...peculiar dance. one that is distinctly her own, and one that her fellow classmates make fun of. glinda, who suddenly has a change of heart, dances with elphaba, not caring if it's not what she's supposed to do. now i know that enid and wednesday didnt share a dance or anything at the Rave'N, but, i can't help but find similarities between elphaba's dance and wednesday's dance that further solidifies their similarities as characters, too.

back to the main point. there's also the obvious visual similarities, enid and wednesday have opposing color schemes as do elphaba and glinda. but i think the main point, or i guess, main part of the musical that i think has the most significant parallels to enid and wednesday is the final duet between elphaba and glinda. just for reference, at this point in the musical, glinda and elphaba have reconciled completely, and elphaba knows that she must take the blame, and she will. she'll take the fall for everything, but before she does, she has to tell glinda how important their friendship was (and is!) to her. the song, 'for good' is a touching song between the two, and phrases like, "you'll be with me, like a handprint on my heart," and, "i do believe i have been changed for the better," and of course, "i have been changed, for good." have an incredibly similar tone to wednesday's comment to enid, "the mark you have left on me is indelible." and even though they didn't spend as much time together as elphaba and glinda, wednesday and enid have both been changed by each other and by the presence and friendship of each other. wednesday even says after her initial comment to enid that, "...I always believed relying on other people to be a sign of weakness. That inevitably, they would lead to disappointment. Turns out I've been the disappointment." wednesday admits that her friendship with enid has completely changed her, and that it's changed the views that she once had about herself. (this does not include the hug that wednesday and enid share at the end of the series. this hug alone shows us that enid's friendship has changed wednesday, and that it is, ultimately, for the better.)

this isn't the best analysis, and if i had properly marked this out it would've probably been better (and longer lol) but the point of this was to at least highlight the parallels to these characters, because it was almost glaringly obvious to me. there are also some moments that i may have missed in this list, so if anyone has anything to add, please feel free to! these are just the moments from the top of my head from both the wednesday show and the wicked musical, but like i said, if i've missed anything or if there's anything anyone would like to add to this, please feel free to!

It's always so fun to do these every year. It's amazing to see the improvment you go through. Even though it often feels like I've made zero progress, these tell a slightly diffrent story. 😊 I do feel my art has gotten a bit stiffer tho, like pose-wise, so that's something I feel I need to work on moving forward xD

One thing that rarley ever changes though... the amout of WIPs gathering dust in my drawing folders, to my utter dismay xD Sometimes I have half the mind to just post the WIPs, despite their incompleation. Many of them will simply never become done and see the light of day otherwise xD Very very tempted, that's two reallys. Anyway I'll stop my rambling

A/N- i had/have no idea what to do for wicked and i really just wrote down my thoughts as they came to me without much preperation just as a general warning. But i know alot of people are doing my babe rowena for 'wicked' and i love her so here we go!

A/N part 2- I have decided to combine suptober day 4 and 5 (wicked+perfect dissaster) because a) they would both involve rowena anyway and b) because i need to catch up and while i can do alot of writing in a day 4 stories is too much. However, i might do one of these in November or just later on in general when i have less to do... So keep your peepers peeled.

Suptober day 4+5: Wicked + perfect disaster.

Rowena POV

"Hello my darlin' how can i help you?" The ginger witch said, her red curls bouncing in her ponytail as she walked over.

"You know how you can help me." The blonde started, "and you know why im here." She said pushing her glasses up her nose.

"Well of course i do love but i still have my manners. What do you want?" Rowena said. Her polite bubbly facade dropping.

"You to stop." She put simply. "Stop with all these perfect dissasters." She said pulling a thick book out of seemingly nowhere.

"Im afraid in simply cannot. Its alot of planning and it takes alot of energy but once i am finished, well it benifits me immensely. And besides by the time you've killed them like they're meant to be ive already gotten what i need." She paused as the librarian looking woman opened the book pulling out a page marker as a single tassle fell on the floor. "You dropped something." Rowena smiled. She looked down at the string looking up at rowena almost outraged. There was a full conversation happening between them existing solely in their eye contact. Eventually fate crouched down to pick it up tucking it back between the pages neatly.

"You are besmirching the charecter of the fates by impersinating our technique." She said snobbily. Rowena rolled her eyes at the self-superiority displayed in the statment.

"Yes i did draw inspiration from you darlings." She said in her charming voice thick with the full flurry of charm accompanying her scottish heritage.

"You cant act like us. Youre too wicked. Its a defamation of the name of the fates." She stated over dramatically.

"Where are your sisters anyway atropos?" She asked neglecting her feigned smile and glaring accusingly at the fake blonde.

"That hardly matters. Th-" she said quickly, getting cut off promptly by rowena.

"No this hardly matters. Otherwise you, the littlest of the little sisters, wouldnt be here all alone. They dont care. You will not put me off when you are inly here due to boredom and petty jelousy." She snapped.

"I dont need my sisters, i have the same autority as them, the same power as them." She said defensively.

"No you don't." Rowena stated knowingly. "You know it, and i know it. You arent the sam rank and you arent the same power, besides even if they were with you, it wouldnt stop me, it wouldnt frighten me. Nothing can." She stated fiddling with a coil come loose of its place in her hair. The fate looked at her like a spoilt child being told 'no' for the first time before promptly vanishing.

"Its always a good day to put someone in their place. Especially somone with such a superiority complex." She mumbled before returning to her buisness. "Maybe I'll give dean a call." She shrugged.

"This whole strategic killing thing reallybhad been working out well for her. And while usually she stuck with wicked in a more playfully mischevious way, this whole morally misguided method really worked in her favour.

A/N: Sorry this one is short but i had honest to god no idea what to do for this really. I mean it would always be rowena for wicked and probably be her for perfect dissaster but i was really fresh outta ideas for this one folks. Anyway. Hope you had fun <3

Apashe - Lord & Master 2020

John De Buck is a Belgian-born Canadian musician. He was born in Brussels, Belgium and currently lives in Montreal, Quebec.

At the age of 19, he began studying electro-acoustics at Concordia University. After his studies he worked as a sound designer at Apollo Studio, where he co-produced the sound design for video games (Assassin's Creed, Watch Dogs, Far Cry) and the sound for Ubisoft gaming trailers. In 2014 he left the company as his own music started to kick off. 2011 he was signed by Kannibalen Records.

In 2020 he released his second album Renaissance – a mix of electronic and classical music. For this project the Prague Symphony Orchestra with 69 instruments was hired. Requiem, which won GAMIQ's Electronic EP of the Year, and Renaissance were produced in his first own studio. His music has been used in various movie and series trailers such as John Wick, Iron Fist, Kingsman: The Golden Circle, Fast & Furious, and Love, Death & Robots Volume 3.

"Lord & Master" won Best Song at the 2022 Berlin Music Video Awards.

"Lord & Master" received a total of 53,4% yes votes.

hello (one of the) resident phannie data analyst(s) here with some parasocial stats on dnp’s movie tastes! following: distribution of dan and phil's ratings overall, movies they each rated 5 stars, their lowest-rated movies, and the similarities + differences in their tastes

(lore moment: yes i am a data analyst in my real job. yes i surprised myself with wanting to do this in my spare time. but then i remembered when we read dracula in college (yes i was an english major) and i graphed like, how many times dracula was referred to as vampire versus monster or something. so i shouldn’t be surprised.

first up, their overall rating patterns and by ~special status~ (i.e., wall-e, kill bill, avatar, lmao, plus big hero 6 for the fun of it)

dan’s rated 304 movies and phil’s rated 305. both of them have mean and median ratings of 4 with min 1 and max 5.

both rated kill bill vols. 1 and 2 a 5. wall-e got a 4.5 from dan and a 4 from phil (phake phans). both gave avatar a 3.5. and big hero 6 3.5 (dan) and 4.5 (phil)

What to watch during the writer's strike:

Don't pay attention to companies who blame writers for delayed movies and television shows! The WGA strike comes from people who are trying to make things better - not only for themselves and other writers, but the films and tv shows we all love.

While we wait for a resolution, I thought I would share some existing television shows that I enjoy. I didn't bother with too much well-known stuff. Instead, I focused on shows I feel many people missed because of the glut of content that all premiered at once over the last few years. (I may make another one of these for movies later on, but this one is about tv.)

Narcos (2015-2017) - The fight of the American DEA and the Colombian army against cocaine kingpin Pablo Escobar and his reign of terror. Genre: Drama with thrilling elements. Lots of violence, some sex and language. Lots of subtitles. Features Pedro Pascal and Boyd Holbrook, if you need some extra incentive.

Derry Girls (2018-2022) - Five teens grow up in Derry, Ireland in the 1990s, amid the final years of the Troubles, a low-level war that lasted roughly 30 years. Genre: Comedy. Some sexual content, some religious content, less violence than you would expect, and the best nun ever to appear on film.

Arcane (2021-?) - Two sisters are alienated when one accidentally kills their adoptive father. Their different paths threaten the fragile peace of a city already on the breaking point. Genre: Drama with elements of action-adventure. Though it's animated, Arcane's animation is beautifully done with tantalizing steampunk elements that will keep you invested.

Disney+:

Star Wars: The Clone Wars (2008-2020) - If you haven't seen any of the Star Wars animated series, this is a good place to start. Set in the time gap between Episode II and Episode III, this series helps flesh out Anakin Skywalker and the Jedi. It is also a great introduction to some of the characters and plots of The Mandalorian. (Star Wars: Rebels is another good choice.) Genre: Adventure with some drama. Violence and death are a large part of The Clone Wars, but it's usually appropriate for children. The clone troopers will steal your heart!

Gravity Falls (2012-2016) - Dipper Pines and his sister Mabel are sent to Gravity Falls, Oregon to live with their great-uncle for their summer break. But when Dipper finds a mysterious book in the woods, the pair find that Gravity Falls is far more mysterious than it seems... Genre: Adventure with a lot of comedy. Though it's billed as a children's cartoon, Gravity Falls is an intriguing watch with mystery subplots that will keep anyone guessing. It also features a famously strong and cohesive series ending. I was in my late 20s when I first watched this and I was still invested!

Daredevil (2015-2018) - After being blinded as a young boy, Matthew Murdock trained his other senses to replace the sight that he lost. He uses his skills to protect the helpless in the New York City neighborhood of Hell's Kitchen. Genre: Action and superhero. Features a lot of incredibly choreographed violence. (Jessica Jones is also an excellent show to watch, especially if you think of David Tennant as the consummate 'good guy'. He's got range!)

HBO Max (Just 'Max' now, I guess):

Ghosts (2019-2023) - Petty roommate squabbles don't stop just because you're dead! Alison and her husband Mike inherit a house, then a near-death experience allows Alison to see its ghostly inhabitants. Chaos and humor ensue as the ghosts try to adjust to the house's new owners. Genre: Humor. Ghosts is a British sitcom, but since the writers are comedians (writing and performing in Horrible Histories), the show is done in a style that feels more natural to American viewers. Hint: watch the BBC version, not the American one. They're fairly similar, but definitely not the same!

Pushing Daisies (2007-2009) - A pie-maker with the ability to bring back the dead helps to solve murders. He's helped by his once-dead childhood sweetheart. Genre: Comedy with some dramatic elements. Some of the CGI-heavy moments haven't aged particularly well, but the show has a unique premise and an incredibly talented cast!

Hulu:

Abbott Elementary (2021-?) - This mockumentary series showcases an inner-city elementary school in Philadelphia. The teachers and administration do their best for the kids, but they're constrained by budgets and the limitations of the educational system itself. Genre: Comedy mockumentary. Though Abbott Elementary is fictional, some of the issues brought up are all too real. This is a funny and incisive look at the American public school system.

Amazon Prime:

Fleabag (2016-2019) - The unnamed protagonist of the show struggles through life on her own with limited support from her alienated family and the memories of her recently deceased best friend. Genre: Comedy with lots of dramatic elements. Lots of sexual content and references, some language, breaking the fourth-wall, and several characters you just long to hit. I watched the second season in a single day, that's how good this was.

Unknown Streaming Service:

Black Sails (2014-2017) - This prequel to Treasure Island features elements from the book, original characters, and real pirates from history in a setting that emphasizes realism. Captain Flint and his crew search for a legendary prize... one that might allow them to claim Nassau for their own. Genre: Action and adventure. Think Game of Thrones, but with pirates. Incredibly well-written and well-acted with gorgeous scenery, LGBTQ representation, and just enough historical accuracy to keep things grounded. Black Sails also boasts one of the best endings ever given for a television show.
