There are a couple angles you could compare them along—in a very literal way, they made huge life changes at around the same time. We’ve heard them both express similar opinions about how they feel about the life/rules that held them prior to that decision (they do not mean much to them). They are both characters who strike a wide range of upstairs and downstairs people as nice and friendly and good to be around

But I think—and not to relate everything to Thomas—for me, it also has to do with how they both reflect a disposition and outlook that is one he respects and I think. Would like to feel is more realized within himself.

Because they both have a clearly realized sense of self—they are willing to step outside of what is common or easy, and they really don’t apologize for that. They know who they are, they insist on the right to live the life they want.

but then Also!! They have found a way to be those things without building this wall between themselves and others. They have been able to get beyond feelings of bitterness or self-alienation that can come from having to take those kinds of stands about your own life! And they come across as genuinely warm and self-aware people, who see when other people might also want more from life and encourage them to take the same path.

And I think the reasons that Thomas found Sybil to be such an important person in his life will likely be. A lot of what will make Guy another important person in his life.

i'm going in age order so unfortunately you get cop out answer first because i think wade is pretty close with all of them. this is a guy who took being the oldest weirdly serious i think he bossed them all around when they were kids and now he like. definitely tries to go easier on them and like prioritize preserving that relationship rather than needing to be right or involved all the time. i think the guys have boys nights sometimes. i think when skye and wyatt moved in together he made a point to go visit them and their kids and like. idk show support. corny!

to that point, i think lyle does consider him and wade close. i think there is a level to which lyle grew up idolizing wade just because shit looked so much easier for him. and that made lyle look to him for like advice. i also think though that he and kinsley have a special relationship. b/c like i've said before i think i imagine they have dealt with like. similar effects of their family's like ignorance (not in a mean way just genuinely) of mental illness. like they may not have been particularly close before even but once kinsley started being open about what she was going through more i think it like helped him to talk about it too. like he thinks she's a very cool kid and he's very proud of her in a way.

I love the disaster curses and intend to have them as side muses/NPCs with Mahito being the main on this blog. So this is a very fun ask to get.

Jogo is the one he tends to bully the most due to him being very temperamental. While Mahito doesn't necessarily agree with some of his views, they agree on the main things and share a mutual displeasure towards humanity. Their goals are in sync, even if the means of achieving them end up differing.

I think there's something valuable in knowing that Mahito bothers Jogo frequently, like the little worm he is. Why? Because he knows he can get away with it. Not because Jogo is a pushover by any means, but because the other is far older and understands tolerance is important in the long game of their plans. Mahito knows he can bother Jogo and not be at risk to lose him as an asset.

That being said, I think he does genuinely feel enough attachment to like Jogo as a friend. Or whatever a curse can consider to be a friend. He listens to Jogo, even if he doesn't always agree or heed his words. He will listen and consider and provide back his own thoughts. Yes, he can be a little shit, but the fact he's willing to hold a conversation without being manipulative (like he is with humans) just highlights he holds Jogo is a pretty high regard. He likes Jogo's disposition, his intelligence, his anger is cute, he loves annoying him because he's so reactive to everything.

I also have a personal headcanon that Jogo has contributed a lot to Mahito's knowledge on the world, even if it's just through stories. He hits in a zone for me similar to Geto, neither are father figures (thank fuck) but they are a mix between friends and mentors to Mahito. I imagine with Jogo's age that he has a lot of stories that Mahito would like to hear, ponder and converse about. Jogo isn't stupid even if he is stubborn, but that intersection makes for Mahito viewing him as fun. Also hot spring trips.

Hanami he holds a lot of respect for, even if he doesn't agree or understand entirely why they began as such a pacifist. I think they are the one to humor him the most out of the three, even if they may struggle to keep up with Mahito they are there nonetheless.

I feel like the two of them as similar outside of their goals in one particular area: curiosity. Despite Hanami being older, they listen to Mahito's advice and truly believe in him and what he represents to curses and humans alike. They are curious on each other, the meaning of curses and their general outlook. Their willingness to ride or die, take suggestions and consider them in order to become a curse that can carry out this goal is something worth admiring. He doesn't tend to fuck around with Hanami compared to Jogo or Geto, and if anyone gets treated like an actual comrade - it's them. If anything, due to how much he likes Hanami, he's a bit more protective over their well-being.

I like to think out of all three, Hanami knows Mahito best and likewise, I feel like Mahito knows Hanami best in turn. If anyone can calm Mahito down, it's probably them. He has a high opinion of them, their power, their discussions and solidarity as comrades. And I wouldn't be surprised if it was Hanami that contributed to Mahito feeling value towards his own kind just by watching how they regard Dagon.

Speaking of Dagon, our big baby. Mahito I think has two mode with him. Completely vibing with zero thoughts in head or being super perplexed by Dagon just... doing Dagon things. I also feel like if he bullied the little guy half as much as he does Jogo (or even Hanami, because let's be real - Jogo has it the worst) his ass is going to get sent into orbit by Hanami themselves.

Baby mode Dagon, which is all Mahito knew him by, is the gentlest thing he has ever experienced. Especially as a curse - but let's not just limit it to that. If Dagon wasn't a curse, he probably would have lol'd and crushed him. But because he is that has stayed his hand and, well, gave Mahito insight to how fragile something can be. Like humans are fragile. Sure, he plays with them cruelly in comparison but he knows better. Is what I headcanon, at least.

I think one of Mahito's favorite things to do is just hangout with Dagon on the beach/float in the ocean together. Sometimes he'll speak about things he read or his activities but usually Dagon is the one he goes to for quiet company. Their relationship is a vague one since Dagon is still in baby mode, but nonetheless Mahito is very excited to see just what kind of curse he becomes.

I kind of imagine Dagon adopted Hanami's perspective a bit in how he views Mahito - looking to him as someone to heed words from. I also like to imagine when Hanami was watching over Jogo squaring off with Gojo, that Mahito likely played a role in keeping Dagon less stressed just by being confident in his comrade's abilities to survive. I think Mahito serves as kind of an anchor. Where Jogo and Geto could be consider friend-mentors, I think Mahito is that for Dagon.

As manipulative as, his childish curiosity and intelligent understanding of things comes together to make for a fun intersection. He doesn't really know what to do with Dagon, so he just vibes. But he's excited for the prospect of what he becomes, too. Unlike with Junpei, I think Mahito really believes in the same words he spoke to the kid - about eat when you're hungry, if you're mad kill someone then. That Mahito will support him, except in this case it's Dagon he genuinely is supporting. I like to view that whole scene as something he would possibly say to Dagon (the general gist, at least) but the difference is, speaking it to Junpei was a half truth and manipulative af whereas with Dagon it's a sincere thing to highlight the difference in how he views humans vs how he views curses.

A lot of that is just my own headcanons from this worm living in my brain, though.

All in all, I think Mahito considers these three specifically as his gang. I can see him viewing them all as fun individuals in different but comfortable ways. Enough to keep them in high regard when compared to anyone else, at least. He's always going to be a selfish little prick but at least his desire to elevate curses was sincere, which leads me to believe he is capable of possessing enough affinity for his own kind to like the three of them in his own genuine way.

I find it fascinating that one of Thailog’s supposed flaws is that he doesn’t act like a gargoyle should (i.e. he wants to make a profit off of his work, not just protecting ppl for free).

Due to his “birth” he’s technically a gargoyle with a human outlook on life, very similar to Angela but he wasn’t “raised” by a medieval princess and mage who had a ridged moral system. He was brought up by Xanatos to be just like the sly, modern, billionaire, businessman but with the additional skill set of flight, strength etc. He probably resents Angela for that fact, seeing how she’s so easily accepted by Goliath.

He’s much like a young Xanatos, breaking away from his father(s) to prove he can make name for himself. He flaunts his new found power, the clan he made, and his temporary girlfriends to try and get a rise out of mainly Goliath. Basically doing what Xanatos was doing in Vows with Petros, saying “look I’ve done so many things without your help, are you proud of me?”.

Maybe he believes getting a kid by any means could smooth the fallout with Xanatos and Goliath. Drawing from what happened again with Petro and Xanatos, with the birth of Alexander Fox bridging the gap between them. This is all just speculation, it could just be bc the kids going to have a certain genetic disposition and that it’s a Maza.

Sometimes I wonder if understanding fascists/fascism emotionally is more important than understanding it intellectually; not that the second is unimportant, just the emotional aspect should take priority. Particularly considering how much far right populism and proto-fascist stuff talks past facts and directly to gut feelings. Like for example, what is the emotional appeal to "going back to how things used to be", the great past etc. I understand it intellectually, but not emotionally, and I have the impression it's more important

I guess I’d say that emotions are much broader and more raw/inchoate than political ideas, right? Fascism is a specific political ideology with specific goals for transforming state and society, so the ideas are where we have to start (or we should actually probably be starting with the material conditions both general and specific that set the stage for the struggle for political power, for culture and mass psychology, everything we’re talking about, however much autonomy we give those); the sort of emotional and psychological dispositions at both an individual and mass level that might lead people to adopt and implement those ideas are important as a partial explanatory factor but could potentially and as easily fuel other political phenomena built on different ideas. Like the last post I reblogged discussed the Nazis but wasn’t, strictly speaking, about fascism, but about this more general tendency toward blurring the line between demogogic bluster and deadly sincerity, which overlaps with fascism but hardly defines or distinguishes it. And at the same time, not only might fascism not have a monopoly on those sentiments, but different fascists might have different emotional impulses (or even rational considerations: the point has been provocatively made about Nazism that many Nazi voters had more or less rational, coherent economic considerations in mind when they went to the polls) behind doing what they do.

Like wrt wanting to return to a greater past (which btw would lend itself better to conservatism than to fascism), we can speculate and generalize about the desire to find shelter and comfort from the disruptions of a changing world or whatever, but ultimately different people might have different reasons for attaching themselves to a reactionary/restorationist political project, or on the other hand, they might experience much the same underlying feeling but express it in politically different ways.

Granted, even I suggest sometimes that there’s a kind of fascist ‘mindset’ (“We raise once more our challenge to the stars,” Marinetti – but that’s a perfect example of the former point actually since not all futurists were fascists! Renzo Novatore had a very similar outlook but was a militant antifascist.) The emotional side is interesting, and significant to fleshing out at a visceral level what fascists are like and (part of) why people become fascists, but I worry that, if not applied with restraint, it’s all sort of speculative and unfalsifiable, and certainly it does not delineate one doctrine, movement, or regime from another (all of which have always been to some degree based on a fusion of emotional and ‘mythic’ appeals with more rational ones anyways).

I was a bit conflicted at first because I thought putting both of them in the same room may be far too domineering :'-). they've got some similarities: being a (human) hater awfully dismissive of those they deem unworthy, their unapproachable disposition and well, their lack of reasoning behind supposed cruelty(?). admittedly, having so many similarities won't always mean they see eye to eye. but who's to say they have to? they've both attended some pretty... major historical events. albeit placed in different places during the war, I'm hoping I'm right in saying that they've both come out with a pretty jaded outlook on life from it. she's at a bit of a standstill with her life, to the point that her reasons to attend NRC seem questionable. it's something I think might be interesting to explore — she's not going to bring a new and more hopeful outlook to his current views, and if anything, any influence she may have may be more on the pessimistic side, but she's definitely there if he needs to sit down and stew. you've got a pretty cynical pairing, overall. on a more light-hearted note, I'd like to say that she'd appreciate the fact he shows good manners when necessary. regardless of how briar is, it's undeniable that his prowess is worthy of respect, at the very least.

Blue Sky Podcast Celebrates National Optimism Month In March

Did you know that March is National Optimism Month? Being optimistic is now harder than ever. Politicians not in power describe doom and gloom. Social media is a viper's nest of the worst humanity has to offer. The local news only focuses on the bad stuff -- fires, crime, violence, and even meteorological scare tactics. Intolerance threatens democracy globally as we are expected to conform to a specific lifestyle and religion. 

But there is still plenty of reason to be optimistic. Reason number one for optimism is personal health and wellness. 

An American study of 2,564 men and women who were 65 and older also found that optimism is good for blood pressure. Researchers used a four-item positive-emotion summary scale to evaluate each participant during a home visit. They also measured blood pressure, height, and weight and collected information about age, marital status, alcohol use, diabetes, and medication. Even after taking these other factors into account, people with positive emotions had lower blood pressures than those with a negative outlook. On average, the people with the most positive emotions had the lowest blood pressure. The results of this research show that compared to optimists, pessimists nurtured little hope for the future and were more at risk for depressive and anxiety disorders, with subsequent impairment of social functioning and quality of life. The role of optimism in the quality of life has also been investigated in depressive disorders emerging in patients suffering from somatic pathologies, (such as acute coronary syndrome, for instance) in which a significant inverse correlation was found between dispositional optimism and level of satisfaction in life on one hand and depressive symptoms emerging after the cardiovascular event on the other hand

What does all this have to do with podcasting?

  Blue Sky is hosted by Bill Burke, founder of The Optimism Institute, and this weekly podcast features inspiring leaders, authors, researchers, and big thinkers who are taking on some of our world’s toughest challenges with an infectious sense of optimism. Blue Sky takes its name from the meditation reminder that there’s always blue sky above, sometimes you just have to get your head above the clouds to see it. The show is hosted by Bill Burke, founder of The Optimism Institute and former media executive (president of TBS Superstation, and led the launch of Turner Classic Movies!)

Since March is National Optimism Month, the Blue Sky podcast has a special milestone 50th episode with author / podcaster Kelly Corrigan of the Kelly Corrigan Wonders podcast. 

On the 50th episode, Kelly Corrigan describes to Bill Burke the many things she’s learned in her life and career about optimism and how we all can benefit from life’s setbacks to become better people and forge stronger relationships. Kelly reflects on lessons she learned from her parents, and how facing her own cancer diagnosis and battle with the disease left her with a greater sense of empathy for others with similar hardships. She also explains why she thinks intellectual humility is a key ingredient for an optimistic outlook, and also that “there’s no feeling as good as being useful to someone.”

It is a thoughtful, lively, entertaining, and thoroughly optimistic discussion.  

One of my favorite episodes is with Kathryn Goetzke in August 2023. Following a challenging childhood and the tragic death of her father, Goetzke decided that the best way to tackle depression and despair is to create reasons for hope.  After studying the issue deeply with experts in psychology, she determined that hope was both teachable and measurable, and has made it her life’s work to spread this message.   In 2022, she published The Biggest Little Book About Hope, and continues to be a global mental health ambassador. She was recently appointed to represent the World Federation for Mental Health at the United Nations and in this Blue Sky episode she describes how she came to be so passionate about this work and why she remains so committed to the cause of spreading the good news about the powerful effects of maintaining a hopeful attitude.

Check out Blue Sky. Burke is a terrific host with a pleasing voice and humble manner, but he's not a pie-in-the-sky Pollyanna. There are so many energizing episodes where Burke talks with people who have a "get-it-done" mentality instead of a "what's the use" mindset. 

I'll end by stating that I am optimistic that you will listen to Blue Sky.  President Dwight D. Eisenhower once said, "Pessimism never won any battle."

Always Present

"It had been raining steadily for five days, and the local forecast was predicting another two days of equally bleak conditions. I found myself increasingly unmotivated to do much of anything, especially when it involved going outside. Taking out the trash, driving to work, letting the dog out — everything was a wet, depressing chore that sapped my energy and dampened my disposition.

Having not seen the sun in nearly a week, I decided to head to the gym in hopes that some physical activity might change my outlook. While driving through a particularly strong downpour, the rain suddenly stopped, the clouds broke, and the brilliant sun shone through long enough to change my perspective.

In that moment, I was able to recognize that though the storm had been shrouding the sun, it was never gone. So it is with God who, as the Bible tells us in Deuteronomy 31, will always be with us, never leaving or forsaking us.

Too often, we are so focused on worldly cares that we forget that even in the midst of our storms, Jesus is still “the bright morning star” promised in scripture. It is good to remember that clouds cannot stop the light of the sun; they can only obscure it for a time. In a similar way,

Christ never leaves us. He is with us through it all, ordering our days and preparing straight paths for when the clouds lift." God remains with you in everything. He will never leave you alone to complete any task that you face.

Blue Topaz - The gem of Clarity and Strength

Topaz is a symbol of love and affection, and has been said to be an aid to ones sweetness and disposition. Topaz was once was considered one of five elemental substances that would bring protection to the deities. The figure of a falcon engraved upon a topaz would bring the wearer goodwill and kindness of the powers that be. Topaz in particular has been said to work with ones creative energies. topaz is also excellent for promoting concentration. Topaz is particularly good for artists. It gives one access to their artistic creativity, and increases one's appreciation of beauty. It is said to give a person the capacity to see both the larger picture and the minute detail, recognizing how they interrelate.

Narcissus

There are several Narcissus species that bloom specifically in the winter. For the ancient Greeks, the Narcissus spelled egoism, vanity and conceit. Greek mythology tells us of a Grecian youth, Narkissos, who was so in love with his reflection in a pond that he drowned in it. Immediately, a Narcissus flower sprang up in that spot. During the Victorian era, the secret message conveyed by the Narcissus was "You're the only one". Today, the Narcissus symbolizes sweetness, respect, modesty and faithfulness. It suggests the idea that you want your beloved to stay exactly the way they are and to never change.

Sagittarius

Sagittarius people are known to be philosophical, independent, optimistic, honest, and intellectual.
