Why I Believe Larry Is Real

It’s been a long time since I’ve done one of my opinion essays. This week I was asked to justify my belief that Larry is real, and that Harry and Louis are together. It feels like it’s time.

I’ve thought about how to reply to the demand, which came from someone on X (formerly Twitter). I cannot compel someone who isn’t inclined to believe in Larry to suddenly change their mind. If someone doesn’t want to interpret the signs the same way I do, that’s their prerogative. But that said, I decided to give some thought about how to answer the question. 

I’ve been inspired by IndiaAlphaWhiskey and her recent reply to a similar question. I loved the way she answered by talking about long term love and how it’s steady and doesn't need to have a lot of fireworks visible from the outside. It’s hard to put that into words that make sense to someone who hasn’t witnessed it. Here’s her original reply:

The reality is we do not have solid proof that they were or - as I believe - still are in a relationship. Nor should we. H&L are closeted celebrities who keep their private life private. They are closeted, so you won’t see them admitting to being in a relationship in interviews; that would defeat the point of being closeted. In fact, you may think you’ve heard them outright deny being together. Again, if you’re not looking at the clues, and you only want to take this at face value, you’re not going to see any other possible narrative. Full stop. If that’s the case, you’re not going to agree with me, and that’s fine.

I can list out a hundred things that, to me, are coded messages H&L have signaled to either us or to each other. You can debunk/deny/laugh-out-loud at all of them, if you want. You might call something coincidence or debunk one or more of these pieces. And yes, there are things out there that aren’t true, that are completely coincidence or debatable – or wildly unbelievable.

But there are a hundred more things that are real. Or at least open to interpretation. At some point, it becomes really, really unlikely that everything is a coincidence over the last decade, and you have to admit that H&L are in collaboration with their messaging. For me, once you admit they are in collaboration in their messaging, it doesn’t take a huge leap to believe they are together romantically. Why else would their teams coordinate messaging to the media and the masses?

Harry even said, in 2022, “There’s not many [clues and tidbits] that get left behind. Most of the time, they usually pick up on pretty much everything, along with a couple of hilarious coincidences that were never meant to be, never meant to be kind of clues in the first place that happen… end up being clues.”

You don’t have to believe any of it. I’m fine with that. But because you don’t believe it, doesn’t mean I’m not completely, unwavering, solidly adamant in my own belief that it’s real. Especially if you’re not providing any evidence to sway my beliefs.

Here’s what I think: I think Harry and Louis met and fell in love during X-Factor in 2010, began dating, and continued to fall while on the X-Factor tour and the recording of the first single and album. I believe they made it official in 2011. Over the years, they went through hard times through career changes, loss of family members, solo career ups and downs, differences in career trajectory, doubts and fears, and then the pandemic. I believe they weathered all that and are together and committed to this day. 

I think they live a private life and have no intention of coming out or going public any time soon. Harry said to Rolling Stone last year that he hasn’t publicly “been with anyone.” I also think, even though they are determined to stay private, they like the idea of some fans knowing and supporting them. Seeing their true, authentic selves. So, they’ve gotten good at messaging their truth to fans who want to see it and support it. 

Due to industry pressure and 'image' clauses in their contract, I think they were encouraged by record execs and management to keep their relationship quiet, but rebelled (as teenagers, young adults, and fools in love will do) by insinuating double meanings in interviews and signaling to those in the know ever since. 

I think the signaling started in One Direction days when fans began to pick up on the signs they gave each other - the secret looks, the thumbs up, their complementary tattoos. 

When they saw fans remaining loyal, despite the idea they might be gay/queer and together, the signals turned more outward and louder, with Harry’s blue bandana, lyrics, the rainbow bears, and more. I think it continues today with graphic t-shirts, even more lyrics, matching merch, intentional mirroring in stage lighting and costumes, and more. 

Evidence Larry are together Now

Understand that there’s no solid “proof” that H&L are together now. So, if that’s what you’re here looking for, you won’t find it. They are closeted still, both portraying a heterosexual narrative in the media.

My lens (admittedly biased) is that they are together and hint to us, but that most of what they do these days is for each other. Little inside jokes from across the world or across the room to show they are together. Despite them being separated for work a lot, I believe these little nods to each other helps keep their connection healthy and strong across the time apart.

What follows is a small sampling of what I think is intentional messaging from H&L, meant to suggest to those following that they are still together. Nothing is a proof. Nothing by itself is anything more than coincidence. But taken together, these along with other examples, show two men who are speaking through their actions, in my humble opinion.

They have strikingly similar patterns in their merch for FITF and HSLOT.

They both had really intentional blue/green stage lights at their shows. For anyone who doesn’t know, blue and green were their respective assigned colors when they were in One Direction. Certainly not a proof on its own but coupled with other things adds to the intentionality.

So there you have it. I could obviously go on for quite a bit, with many more examples, but I think this is a pretty good sampling. I apologize in advance if I ask the same question to more bloggers, but, as a new Larrie, I don't know many things and I don't have clear ideas. a veteran Larrie, here on Tumblr, thinks that H and L broke up at least a year and a half ago (this would also be demonstrated by the fact that Louis, completely drunk, fell and broke his arm) and that what is happening in these days is made possible precisely by the fact that they are no longer together. This statement struck me. what do you think?

Sounds crazy to me. They were literally together yesterday—that’s a big reaffirmation to me, not the opposite. Plus, the blue and green bird the day before? I wonder what else people need, that’s consistency, and it’s what they have been doing forever. They have been to multiple places together, we know that, and this time it was simply actually confirmed, so I don’t see how this could get so twisted. I understand people thinking they could have potentially broken up since things were a bit quiet, but after that, it’s harder to justify. This “veteran larrie” seems like they want to believe in a particular narrative and are creating stories to try to justify it. Giving a date? Trying to say Louis was “drunk” because of it? LOL. They’re trying to be a smart ass and making massive assumptions based on nothing. Even if they broke up, we know nothing about them. How can people talk about stuff they know nothing about so confidently?

To be honest, this back and forth about whether they’re still together or not never made sense in general. In my opinion, they are and always have been together because it’s the more consistent perspective. But at the end of the day, I wonder if it really matters? Why do people need so much reassurance? It’s stupid.

tbf them breaking up was what made a lot of people believe F is really Louis' son. I remember back in 2015 before Eleanor brokeup people were thinking Harry and Louis were most likely on a break because Louis was partying a lot pre Zayn leaving. Like a LOT and he had Luke and the lad crew with him for most of the tour. Then it came Briana and Glasto girl, then the pregnancy confirmation and GMA Harry looking unbothered but with some anger too lol also 1dhq putting the Piss Off/Wanker video and Louis hand gesture before the hug. So a lot of larries back then assumed they brokeup early 2015 and Louis spiraled out and got a girl pregnant. Basically the Eleanor storyline but with Larry. People thought they got back together mid 2016 when Jay got sick. It was a whole move in a side of tumblr vs the people that thought she was never pregnant and fans were just buying into the party boy Louis narrative even when thinking Larry was real before. Remembering 2015 and 2016 is awful lol

yeah, I know that, and like - that's so dangerous to correlate that? Like, Louis isn't a father and I actually don't think they were broken up between end 2014 until beginning 2016 at all, I think they were actually going really strong at that time. But I very much understand how this narrative, or this thing of "they broke up and/or Louis cheated and got Briana pregnant" turned into "if you believe they ever broke up even once you automatically believe Louis is Freddie's dad and therefore are not a real larrie" which is... like, that limits everyone so much??

I am very much buzzing, there's literally no doubt to me about Babygate being a stunt. Simultaneously I believe they did have breaks. And that is OKAY. Still means I think they are together today, still means I think they always loved each other, still means their relationship is valid.

It is so dangerous to operate with absolutes regarding situations like this. Why did no one connect Xarry to Babygate before I pointed it out (or at least never talked openly about it)? Because they were afraid to think out of the box because they get shot down and excluded for even entertaining the thought they might have had breaks.

What are you so afraid of? That the ideal image you created of their relationship that's your comfort and projection surface might not fit your dream idea and actually turn out human (& beautiful)?

I read through your larry post and you mentioned the peace ring. Harry wore it last over a year ago in September and on the anniversary twitter larries were waiting for it to come back, they even wanted a harry london walk with him wearing it. That pap walk they would tolerate. When it didn't happen, they turned to louis. He had a show that day and wore a green shirt, olive green, olive like offering an olive branch, like asking for peace, bam peace ring was back! I cringed so hard when I read that but I used to be like that too so I couldn't even be mad. But then I started questioning my sanity and if everything else i believed about clues and messages larry was sending was wrong and made up. probably most of it. But then i think about the louis maison shirt on harrys house release day and I question it again. But I'm chill about all this. Maybe they broke up a long time ago or maybe they're on off, maybe still together, maybe in an open relationship. Whatever we'll never know so why stress about it. I think mostly on Tumblr everyone is more relaxed about it. It's the new larries who don't grasp any of this and think management is still controlling them and larry are blinking more code at us that are annoying as fuck.

I joined in this crazy H&L world only last January after I caught wind of the second E breakup and it really felt like "holy shit, there might really be something here, they really might be about to come out, etc." It's been an interesting time so far in the fandom, and I think I'm more in line with your way of thinking recently. Things just feel...meh. There's a weird coldness to the fandom right now, almost a forced belief like you mentioned in your previous answer. I'll always believe there was SOMETHING going on, but to this current day? Probably not. Thanks for your sanity. :)

Ok. A little something I want to put out there.

Lestappen has been blowing up for a good while now and I for one am thoroughly enjoying it BUT. But. Let's please keep it and other rpf ships confined to tumblr, ao3 and the like.

They do have wags, almost all drivers do. The ship related content on insta and tiktok are very easy for them to come across, and for someone who is as chronically online as charles (as seen in the insta pfp fiasco) there's no way he's not seeing this stuff.

The thing with tumblr and ao3 is that they have a proper tagging system. Tiktok does not have that (I'm not just talking about TikTok btw), we don't know how these types of shippy content will make them and their wags feel. They are not characters they are real people.

Hi this post of yours came up on my dash and I just wanted to say I absolutely loved it and wholeheartedly agree. I am also someone who thinks they never officially broke up [fights and stuff given their situation, yes] but no major break up. To me it's one thing when someone says they think they broke up but it make me very uncomfortable and just ??? when someone specifically thinks larry broke up in late 2015 up until late 2016. Bc when you ask them why they go "louis always looked so sad/upset then" like yeah it was a fucked up time for him.

He went from finally being done with El to right away getting stuck with Dani, to then Bri/babygate being forced to pretend he got some random girl pregnant AND of course his mom being in the hospital. So of course louis was massively sad/upset looking during that time! Doesn't mean [nor is there any proof] it was bc of H if anything he would have been closer than ever to H and his whole family. I remember reading an anon reciept talking about how in 2016 he got closer to his family and H and that they were his top priority at the time not music.

He def leaned on H during that difficult and emotional time. Let's not forget pap pics of H [during the worst of 2016] where it seems he was at a hospital with things like a razor likely for louis who probably hadn't left his mom's side in over a week.

Hello Anon! Thank you so much for this--even though this post is from last year, I haven't changed any of my thoughts about it. I'm still very firmly in the 'they never broke up' camp. I just still don't see any timeline that makes sense for a breakup.

Sometimes, I think, the fandom forgets that there are other things people focus on (and things that make them desperately sad) besides their relationship. Both H&L went through hell during that time, but still put out music. They supported each other and came through together on the other side.

The thing with that is that this fandom has there are so many corners at this point, everyone has different takes on everything. And it kind of sucks because *should* be easy to talk to people even though they have a different opinion, but it's not...it turned into something so exhausting, like one trying to convince the other that they're right. And honestly, I've been around for like 9-10 years, I'm tired, I'm cranky, I don't fucking want to be right. I just want to be truthful to what I see and perceive. So this is one of the things that stopped being fun a little bit, unfortunately.

But I don't agree that most larries think they're no longer together, it's very hard to measure that, but I definitely disagree with that statement based on my general perception across tumblr and other platforms. Maybe it seems like that because of your bubble. But I do agree that people question whether they were together this entire time or not, which I find reasonable. I just don't think the reasons make any sense... so I absolutely agree with you, the fucking entitlement LOL People say things they have no idea of with so much confidence, and they make entire theories on top of that, just because of one of two lines in a song - which is so subjective.

So yeah.. that's not my thing. I don't know them, I won't pretend I know what they struggle with. From what I see, and from what they've given us through the years, I don't think any of the arguments people use about breakups are reasonable because they're all based on assumptions and theories and extremely subjective interpretations. Do you think Louis and/or Harry ever slept with other people during 2010-present? If so, do you think they were on a break and do you have receipts or a post about that? because I kinda do think they broke up at some point (their songs say so) and maybe they had a relationship/hook up with other people during their time apart.....bc in Alway You and other songs Louis does say he realized after time apart that it was always Harry. So maybe he had a thing with another guys but realized it was H he was really in love with....

going by my gut feeling i would say yes... looking at it from a little bit more rational side i would also say yes.

Doesn't mean they ever stopped loving each other. I also don't think they ever really cheated on each other. To me, the betrayal part of cheating is the lying and the pretense. And I don't think they ever did that. I do believe that for a long time they didn't say out loud what they wanted from the relationship, what it really was.

Like, don't get me wrong - I think they were as fucking much in love with each other as it gets. But you know, when you're this young you don't know what you have is the real deal. Or not really. You don't realise you've hit the jackpot this early in life, I mean, listen to Too Young.

and one of their biggest themes is not saying, not telling each other what they really want, because of fear of rejection, or fear of what it would mean.

So, I don't think they truly sat down for a long time, making it clear they want to be monogamous. And this is where it gets tricky, because I think they played with it a lot. I think especially Harry is a hopeless romantic, and I think Louis loved making Harry happy in that way (not that he didn't also want to do it, just, yk) and to me it feels like for a long time they moved on the plane of "joking" - I don't know if you've ever been in a relationship like that, but when you're afraid that you're too much, too naive, too romantic, you pack everything up in a thick layer of "I'm just joking" because it makes it easier, it gives you plausible deniability, and i think that's what happened a lot, especially in the beginning.

And then, the longer it went on and their feelings just didn't fade... it got really messy and hurtful, because they kinda ran into this blindly, on a feelings rush, and then they were too deep in to just let it be.

And then they hurt each other a lot while just trying to do the right thing.

And I do think that they took some time apart, maybe even a couple of times, and tried it with other people, in different capacities, to have fun or fall in love and they just... kept coming back to each other.

Because, after all - it's always them.
