Bi coding: Dual wielding swords is literally a euphemism in Japan for bisexuality; and Kirito initially tries to hide the fact he can dual wield out of fear of how the people he's close to will view him (and once he reveals it to them and they accept it, he begins to be more open about it.) Also in the Underworld arc he becomes very close with Eugeo to the point of living with him (and sharing a bed on occasion), and there are several parallels between Eugeo and Asuna, and they're so gay for each other that despite the anime having only a toned down version of it, they're still very affectionate (Also of note is that Eugeo is the only guy in SAO canon to consistently have a 'laying in bed with Kirito' talk CG in the spinoff games) (There's more but it's spoilers and this is a shortened version)

Trans coding: Kirito is very trans coded in the light novel (which shows Kirito's thoughts in much greater detail than the anime) Aincrad arc reveals that Kirito explicitly Does Not Like his real face, and dislikes how feminine it looks (he mentions that its led to him and his cousin being mistaken for sisters) And in Phantom Bullet arc, he's visibly uncomfortable at being mistaken for a girl due to his avatar's appearance, and in response to being misgendered he briefly panics and checks to make sure his chest flat (at least in the anime adaptation) 🏳️‍⚧️"

All the people calling the analysis of the queer undertones in Goncharov "reaching" and "tumblr fangirlism" need to sit down and do some damned research because listen, I'm one of the first people to be skeptical of intent in things like this, I lived through TJLC, but this is, decidedly...not that. Matteo JWHJ 0715 addressed it in this 1975 interview, one of the few he's ever done! He makes it clear, in no uncertain terms, he is a queer person, he uses his pseudonym for his and his family's safety, and his work cannot be fully understood without understanding his struggle with being unable to fulfill a role prescribed to him.

(Hell, the comment about him sometimes wishing he was a woman so that he might be loved the way a man is supposed to love a woman makes me wonder if he ended up being on the mlm-transfem cusp, but that's as far as I'm willing to speculate, especially because odds are decent he's still alive so that would be not just historically unstable but also just plain rude.)

And I mean, okay, it's an obscure interview, I don't blame some of you if you hadn't seen it until now, and I know that filmbros can look at a guy saying "yeah this movie is partially about my queer experience" and still be like "oh but it's just METAPHORS there aren't REALLY gay people on screen and besides he was probably joking anyway", but...some of you at this point are just reinventing "UGH why do you freaks have to make EVERYTHING gay?" and claiming it's not homophobic because you are also gay.

Yes, the queer elements are a lot more subtle than you might get in 2022, but that doesn't mean this is just "internet shipper goggles"; you don't even get the full power of the themes if you don't acknowledge the complex web of attraction going on here. There's a running theme of characters obsessing over the ideal of something to the point of destroying the real thing they're based on - from "heritage"-obsessed nationalists destroying priceless, irreplaceable historical and cultural artifacts as acceptable collateral damage to take out one enemy, to Joe straining all his family relationships and driving himself deeper and deeper into debt in the interest of propping up their image of the perfect, loving, wealthy, glamorous unit; to, yes, the entire mess of the Andrey/Goncharov/Katya/Sofia would-be polycule. They contain so many examples of this running motif that you can't deny that the whole tangled net of homoerotic attraction is there without sacrificing the thematic integrity of the entire film.

And hell, with that - even if it wasn't part of the writer's intention, well, this is what "death of the author" means, not "the author is a prick so Hatsune Miku wrote it". If the themes of a piece have better payoff if you include an unintended subtextual detail - who cares that it was unintended? It's still THERE, echoing and amplifying the themes. Whether he intended to or not (and it's pretty clear from the interview that he did), he wrote a bi4bi couple being thrown into chaos because suddenly they couldn't pretend they were straight anymore.

(Speaking of which, while I can't fully agree with the reading that Goncharov and Katya's marriage was exclusively one of convenience, I can't say I really have a problem with it as a whole either...but can some of you out there please stop insinuating that it HAD to be because they MUST both be totally 100% Kinsey 6 gay? I'm bored of being told I'm probably a lesbian and not a bi woman because I've never dated a man (I'm 27). people think they're doing me a favor, they tell me this like they're about to change my life... but it comes off as more biphobic than anything. i know what comphet is, I've read the masterdoc, i even identified as lesbian for 1 year, it's just not for me!!!! who cares if i never date a man in my life, it wouldn't feel right identifying as lesbian knowing that I've enjoyed sexual contact with men, and would probably enjoy it again, if the opportunity arised. yeah, i don't see myself settling down with a man in the future, and most likely see myself finding a life partner who is a woman, but i will always be bisexual. no, I'm not "afraid" of the lesbian label, most of my friends and exes are lesbians. when i identified as lesbian, it didn't feel gross or wrong, it just wasn't me. frankly, my label is for me and i will never gaf what it suggests to someone else. i want the liberty to thirst over some celebrity guy without being questioned, and to fuck around with whoever i want when I'm single without people getting in my business. i also don't feel any fear or intimidation approaching a woman I'm interested in, and i won't force myself to fall in love or even date a guy for a bit instead, just to fit people's expectations of what a bisexual woman should do. i don't want to use the split attraction model bc i don't experience attraction that way, and i shouldn't need to give a dissertation about my sexuality for you to feel more comfortable. unlearn what you think you know about bi women. just like there's bi women who mostly date men, some of us have always exclusively dated women. a lot of the lesbian couples you see down the street might be bi4bi, or have at least 1 bi woman in them, and it's not insulting to suggest that. bisexual women aren't spicy straight, and, not to be crude, but just because I've decentered men in my life, it doesn't mean i can't want to fuck one once in a while 🤷‍♀️.

like..... im not a "fiction never affects reality" person but also it's pretty clear you're not supposed to be a fan of the surveillance state she runs. narratively it's ok for characters to be bad people and hurt others. there's these things called character flaws, conflict, and character arcs. and sometimes bad things or people need to be in a story. sometimes characters dont have to be labeled as good or bad people. sometimes women can be evil AND also be in a cute bi4bi relationship and learn to be more open to her own and others' feelings over time.

her arc wasn't planned out to be this way, but how she ends up is different than how she started in SO MANY WAYS and it's such a disservice to her character AND to the story adventure time tells to just slap a "BAD PERSON" label over all of her complexities. it feels like flattening such a layered and interesting woman into a generic villain because you dont like her choices

peebles has hurt a lot of people. she loves her citizens. she values her friendships even if she tries to put up walls. she's clinically minded and very matter of fact in a way that comes off as rude or hurtful sometimes. she desperately wants the people she loves to be safe, so she surveils them, she imprisons any and all threats even if they're infants, she lies and maims. she makes grave mistakes over and over again. she's lonely. she's brash. she loves giant silly pink clothes. she likes hanging out with dangerous and passionate people. she's a thousand years old and yet still has so much to learn. her age made her numb for so long, believing it was the only way to protect herself, and it just made her blind to the affect she had on the people around her and the people she was supposed to be caring for. she enjoys unethical science, she finds it fascinating, fun, just stimulating when she's bored. she doesn't think too hard about the consequences of her actions on the world around her because she's been around for so long... she's seen the apocalypse, she lived through it, and life goes on. why worry about what hurts now when everything changes and goes away over time?

she needs marceline so bad. they need each OTHER so bad so they can learn to be open and communicative and caring TOGETHER instead of isolating themselves apart. theres SO much more i could say but i'll stop here. princess bubblegum as a character deserves more respect and thought than some people give her.

Huh, interesting how Mina starts taking care of Lucy and then Jonathan (who literally seals his journal and stops writing because he's too busy trying to Not Die from the consumption/Dracula poison in his brain), something that Mina admits has been wearing her down a lot... And then it's her who becomes overtaken by the consumption and sleeps daily for half a day and stops writing by sealing her mind from the world due to Dracula in her brain... And now it's Jonathan who is tending her every need by feeding/dressing/shielding her for weeks. And we see how it affects him too, as he too stops writing and the others see him avoiding them by being either with his wife in their room or alone in the shadows with his knife sanctified by dark love. Both he and and Mina are affected by each others' illness, and both personally tend each other never complain (though Mina shares it once in a letter to [dead] Lucy)

I really think one of the things that makes Jonathan and Mina'r relationship so compelling is that exact reciprocity, though I wouldn't have thought about it like that without your commentary of course.

But, honestly, for all the weight that is culturally assigned to the phrase "in sickness, and in health," the simple fact that anyone who has ever Gotten Sick Like That can tell you is...

Most people don't mean it.

When you get sick, when you get really sick, maybe with something strange that the people around you can't understand... Most of them will simply write you out of their lives. Not just coworkers or friends, but often spouses too.

Being sick sucks for a lot of reasons, but the whole issue of abandonment and isolation, that's not inherent to the illness.

That's a sucking that comes entirely from the people around you.

The intensity with which Jonathan and Mina take care of each other, rather than Mina caretaking while Jonathan praises but never helps her, is so uncommon. Not just in literature, but in life too.

And I think it puts a lot of weight into their relationship that, frankly, the vast majority of M/F relationships in English literature Do Not Even Try To Have.

I joke sometimes about JonMina being a "gay" relationship that just happens to be M/F, of calling their relationship bi4bi rather than M/F, etc.

But, the reason that those jokes work is because a lot of the time, these acts of nonsexual care and love just don't get written in M/F ships; they're gay tropes for a reason.

But they aren't exclusively gay tropes.

And in this case, I think Jonathan and Mina's collective resolve to have the lives they wanted, even in spite of both being stuck ill and both being repeatedly traumatized speaks to me, at least, the most intimately as a severely disabled person who has been repeatedly abused and abandoned, and ultimately only found safety among other disabled people who could relate to that isolation.

I’m always cautious to say certain things here because people are probably going to attack me over what I’m about to say: based on my person experiences interacting with bi sapphics, it seems to be a huge problem in the bi community (at least when it comes to bi sapphics) this urge to make everything about them (like inserting themselves on posts that aren’t about them or just thinking things are about them when they aren’t).

I want to emphasize that this is not the majority of bi sapphics who do this, saying a lot of them do this ≠ most of them.

We should call out problematic behavior from LGBTQ+ people regardless of their identity. I have made posts calling out problematic behavior coming from the lesbian community before, and if I saw this type of behavior coming a lot from lesbians I’d also call them out, but it doesn’t seem to be a very recurring thing when it comes to us.

my first interaction with knowing joel was 3rd life, but it was only bc my friend and i were obsessed with flower husbands at the time and when it switched over to empires we put him in the role of couples therapist solely for the reason that he was the only other person that was on both servers and would know them. but we also made him romance-repulsed aroace bc hehe funny aroace couples therapist

they're the embodiment of strangers/enemies -> friends -> BEST friends -> lovers (alternatively: soulbounds (political allies) to soulmates (platonic/romantic lovers)) and it's like my favorite trope now. they're also so bi4pan and i love that. they love each other so so much and they're goofy and they're magical and i can't even. like. put my thoughts into words because i just care about them too much to even express it,,,,

they should REALLY be more popular in my humble opinion... i've encountered maybe like... two? three?? people in the wild that also ship it that i didn't already know when i "came up" with it-

also like... i wanna read fics about them but the ao3 tag is atrocious right now tbh- as i'm writing this AO3 WON'T COME UP but last i checked i think there were maaaybe 7?? fics in the (romantic) joel/oli tag and one was mine, one was written to me lol, at least one was nsfw, and one had it tagged but it wasn't really mentioned in any way, so- gosh it just makes me sad. i can't read about my boys :(

hi can we please get some more canon bi4bi representation?? like, the only examples i can think of are:

ashlyn and big red from hsmtmts

korra and asami for legend of korra

the book "never ever getting back together" by sophie gonzales (which i got from a blind date with a book and read in a night i recommend it if you like ya and reality tv in books, it's not super scathing but i really enjoyed it)

these are the only three that came to my mind. these characters are all (canonically) cis. all but one of these characters are women. there are a lot of bi people in the world. we date. we date each other. but i can only think of a small number of bi characters, let alone bi characters who date people who are also bi. i don't even care if they're endgame or not. i just want them to be there.

anyway, if y'all have any recommendations for stories that have canon bi4bi couples in them please let me know i'm desparate

it doesn’t matter why a woman wants to be les4les, she doesn’t owe you an explanation. no means no, even if it’s a reason you don’t like. learn that and move on. trying to convince a lesbian to change her boundaries is creepy. incel vibes.

so, i'll be a little more blunt about this.

you're right. i can't, nor will i try to, stop a person from being les4les. and i am not owed an explanation either. i did not fail to acknowledge that.

what i said was, i have never come across a reason that doesn't inherently imply something negative or harmful about bi women. which, by the way, is in fact my business once these things are stated, because then i'm well within my right to call that out and defend bisexuals (hell, i literally just came across this today ─ if you're gonna argue with me on that person then you're definitely not open to viewing bi women respectfully). i don't have a right to try forcing said lesbian to be open to les4bi because that is actually wrong and violates existing personal boundaries, but i do have a right to challenge the reasoning and judge them for it if i think it's biphobic. if you see that as forceful coercion then that's a you problem.

i also asked the les4les community to simply briefly reflect for just a moment on why they wish to exclude bi women from their dating pool, especially if they claim to be allies to bisexual sapphics (as some of the rhetoric could be internalized as well before unlearning it). i did not demand or even ask them to change their preferences, because people who don’t care at the end of the day can still be biphobic if they choose, and i do believe not all les4les are biphobic either. for example, there's a difference between casually favoring lesbians and outright rejecting bisexuals, even if they unfortunately often overlap. i don't have that kind of power to change their minds. wouldn’t you be uncomfortable if i said i didn’t want to date lesbians because they’re always mean, and exclusive, and transphobic, and whining about “lesbophobia” this, “lesbophobia” that??

what i feel the greatest need to address is that i'm not really sure where in my post you got the idea that if i was told "no", i'd keep pushing someone or harass them, not to mention that being against something in theory doesn't have to mean actively disrespecting it. in fact, i tried to be as open as i could, especially by clarifying that i don't think les4les (or bi4bi) relationships are inherently problematic or wrong. imo they're fine even though these particular preferences are kinda weightless without the bigotry and stereotyping anyways regardless.

but, sure, speaking out against (what is usually) bad-faith prejudice and scrutiny is femcel vibes. /s

Can you give some examples of the oversexualised female characters you were talking about?

i love how you're phrasing this like it's a phenomenon i've only just personally made up to get mad about. i'm talking about characters like harley quinn & poison ivy, zatanna, dinah lance, power girl, etc etc you know the list encompasses the vast majority of female comic book characters.

they're all straight white cis women primarily created as eye candy (did you know that during all-star comics 1976 wally wood would try to draw the boob window on power girl's costume bigger every time to see if anybody would stop him and described her creation process as "i like women with curves"?) whose stories are not remotely appealing or interesting to me and i cannot comprehend fans who take these empty empty characters and decide they must secretly have utterly fascinating inner lives because i don't see the benefit of attempting to humanize unbelievably dull characters.

and yes, i said straight even in the case of hq & ivy because there's no universe in which they actually read as gay/bi and i'll always stand by that. they exist the way they do because bruce timm, jimmy palmiotti and whoever else followed in their long line of writers thought some chick on chick action was sexy. that's no representation.

whereas in fandom spaces, the worst to me personally is when people take irreparably straight characters like zatanna and decide she must be the love of john constantine's life and they're bi4bi or some other bullshit because why not also ruin one of the earliest lgbt characters in comics in the process all on the basis of a one off joke alan moore made in swamp thing & a perception of constantine born from a mediocre cw show? i mean. come on.

there are oversexualised female characters who can be interesting (compare sally jupiter/silk spectre in the original watchmen, which i consider an example of the above, vs sally in before watchmen: minutemen, where her dynamic with ursula zandt actually dares to mean something) but that takes such tremendous strength of writing that very few have managed it!

i don't particularly care if anybody agrees or not -- at the end of the day i'm not even blaming the comic creators themselves, i have great respect for wally wood & the entire asc 1976 team as i do for most others you may be thinking of, because i'm not here to change the way society works. my issue comes down to something as simple as the fact that straight female characters are not palpable or interesting to me in any way, that's really it. i'd rather have stories about well written dudes for the rest of eternity because i've always found those more personally meaningful. thanks.
