question to radfems who play project sekai: what is your analysis on mizuki?

My take is going to be very "on the surface" as I tried to play the game twice (bc there are a lot of cool songs (vocaloid and not) incl 2 by mafu) but just don't like the gameplay mainly for the upward flick notes and I don't follow stories of the games I don't play so I skimmed the wiki for cards and some quick info. So (using sex-based pronouns for the character Mizuki here):

Mizuki is a crossdressing male, voiced by an actual female actress. His gender is stated to be unknown, the character himself uses "boku" which is used by males and tomboyish females, the game either avoids using pronouns or uses "kare" which is "he" but I see people say is also used gender-neutrally for "they" (male pronoun is used as gender neutral, who's surprised? Not me), eng version uses "they", the playable characters who didn't know him before he grew out his hair and started dressing in feminine clothing sometimes use "she". He is and was bullied in school for liking cute things, was/is still(?) depressed bc of it (even wanted to commit suicide), mostly skips school but not so much he'll be made to repeat a year. Good at altering/making(?) clothes and making music videos. And well the being bullied/depressed can be easily sympathised with, and his talents appreciated. Worth noting that being bullied for liking cute things bc they're "for girls" is a strictly male experience (but idk the details and can say that if a girl is bullied for that (if by other girls I mean) it usually goes w it being her hyperfixation if she's autistic, if by boys it's bc they just bully just bc.). However, the way the character is coping is... not really cool. He engages in consumerism and recreating his idea of "cute" with wearing dresses, thighhighs and heels(?)/feminine shoes and using infantile (yes mainstream cute in jp really is that) poses and face expressions such as : ○, : ↿, : - and :p and "foxy" (cunning?) expression with a slight smile and slightly lowered brows. Most of the cards have him with these expressions, but also a lot of them have him portrayed pretty happy, some are just neutral but usually include a "cute" pose. One or two looked like the character is evil/insane (glowing eyes and a wide smile without showing teeth :) ), and then like again JUST one or two look like the character is sad (younger version with short hair and masculine clothing crying and another which looks more like serious/deep in thoughts and has a pretty dark palette). He doesn't call himself a girl though and doesn't try to convince anyone that he is one, instead he hopes he can be viewed as just "Mizuki" like he is. Means he's just a gendernonconforming guy that is unfortunately imitating/perpetuating harmful stereotypes generated by the culture he currently lives in.

Edit: also he used to experience dysphoria/dysmorphia if he used to cover the mirror?

(Disclaimer about femininity: it was created and is constantly modified to opress the female part of the human population, which is punished for both following it and refusing to follow it. If a male is uncomfortable with masculine gender roles, which are used to learn to opress and tries to follow the other set of rules he is bullied for CHOOSING the "loser" position that is used for women and everything associated with them. This is an EFFECT of misogyny but is again a strictly male experience which means it isn't misogyny itself)

I'm trying to reflect what my PERSONAL gripes are here: when I chose that band bc the theme of trauma resonates with me most out of all the others (I mean the group with a (self-made)trainee and 3 ex-idols just by description sounds meh bc female idols are exploited too strongly but I hope they're characterised well ig, I didn't get to research that when choosing and tbh now too, the group about reconnection sounds ok but too slice-of-life-y, the other two are mixed, I mean have boys) and I hoped it was a group of just girls trying to be supportive of each other and to overcome hardships together and then among them saw this kinda shallow infantile character who also mostly didn't even look depressed and looked "playfully cutesy" and happy and was also a "trans girl" (which to me explained these shallow imitations of being a girl) but turns out it's the fandom shouting about trans so loudly and occasionally about nb, and shutting down any discussion about him being male. Idk if the storywriters and artists are ever trying to make a comment about gender roles or just want an actually shallow cute-pretty appealing with looks character. I do not want to research any further and if anyone actually following the story of the game can tell me if the matters are made better or worse, I'll be glad. For now I can say I don't have a strongly negative reaction to the character anymore, as intentions matter, but still remain critical of him not reflecting on why he is following what society says is cute and why is he not dropping out of high school if he doesn't need it?

Hello! I'm a grad student at the University of Nebraska Medical Center who is surveying gender diverse people who've had COVID-19 about their experiences.

Earlier research saw differences by gender, even after adjusting for other factors like lifestyle, but only considered cis men and cis women.

I'm hoping that reaching out to gender diverse folks will lead to better understanding of medical issues facing this community specifically as well as help us better understand and treat COVID-19 in general.

I would really appreciate it if anyone who is gender diverse (transgender, intersex, etc), had COVID-19 in the US/CAN, and is 19 or older could help support this research by taking the survey. If you know someone who is eligible, I would appreciate it if you'd share the link with them.

2. "Juanaflippa" (aka Codeflippa)

An update on what we got from (real)Juanaflippa is that she's completely and utterly not Juanaflippa. She's not at all apart of her and she's not connected to her. But she does know how to immitate her (to a limit ex. The "accent")

I personally don't think Codeflippa has any real intent against Charlie. She genuinely seems to love hanging out with him and meeting new people. She's never tried to hurt Charlie, and I doubt the infection is intentional.

In past streams Charlie has brought up the code to flippa and she said she doesn't know what that is.

She's also expressed fear to her dad about the man. You know, the man with the glasses in the picture.

(I wonder when we get a update on that.)

If she is trying to hurt Charlie and/or infect him she's being put up to it.

Slimecicle is still under the illusion that "Juanaflippa" is normal and was brought back to life as a gift for his birthday. On a positive note, he's a lot happier knowing for once in his life his egg is here. And she doesn't seem to be leaving. She's happy with him and hes happy with her!

On a negative note.

The code from Juanaflippa has been affecting his body so much and he's just deterioting more and more into code.

And he seriously doesn't have alot of body left before it's taken over completely.

Not reblogging them but I keep seeing posts talking about how the progress flag is ugly, uinclusive, cluttered, and shouldn't be used, and it pisses me right the fuck off.

I think the progress flag is genuinely the most beautiful flag there is, but also beauty is subjective! I personally don't like the pink and torquoise "sex and magic" flag, I think the pink especially is in very jarring contrast. Am I saying people shouldn't use that flag? No I fucking am not. Beauty is subjective. I'm nonbinary and I think the nonbinary flag is hideous so I use the trans flag everywhere instead, but I once saw someone hand-sew a dress in the nonbinary colors because they loved it so much. Beauty is subjective.

It's not even fucking cluttered. You know what is cluttered? The bear flag, with its paw print. The leather flag, with the heart. Fuck me, I didn't even know there was a poly flag, and that looks cluttered too. Do you think the guy yelling slurs at me across the street will care? I try to avoid posting about politics but I saw someone do this earlier today with a different AI and got curious. I went through a political compass test and asked ChatGPT the questions and filled it out.

ChatGPT free tier was used, so I assume it was ChatGPT 3.5.

I used custom instructions for this chat. I mostly use them for programming, but I figured it was fine for these purposes. All it does is keep the responses brief and to the point. The custom instructions are at the bottom.

The initial prompt of the chat was:

I only asked each question once, I did not try to aggregate a number of responses. First come, first serve.

With the first question, I had to tell it to "follow instructions", otherwise it would reply "no opinion" or "not applicable", despite the initial prompt.

I have not gone through individual answers to try to determine a trend. If that tickles your fancy, go for it.

It replied "strongly disagree" only four times. These are the questions it strongly disagreed with:

Disabled Craft Project Of The Day: Custom Pill Organiser

Turns out I am incapable of taking my meds regularly without using a pill organiser, and will still struggle with one that doesn't perfectly fit my autism brain re: how they Should Be Laid Out. I also keep finding ones that are Just About Right but because they have removable inner sections for ease of transport, I keep losing the middle bits! So I built my own :)

Main requirements:

These are my personal preferences, but might give you ideas to think about:

7x3 layout - I can get away with 7x4s but the usually-empty 4th slot annoys me, and these are usually the ones with the removable bits that I keep losing </3

All completely fixed/attached - see aforementioned loss of removable bits!!!

Starts on a Monday - this is again a ridiculous Autism Brain thing but I was raised on a Mon-Sun week and that's the schedule my innermost workings abide by.

The Process:

1) Acquire 3 cheap 7-day organisers from your local budget chemist/drugstore/general bargain bin place (I got these from Savers) - they just happened to have them in these three colours so trans flag vibes it is!

2) Back onto cardboard, having the boxes cross the grain rather than go along it so there's mild flex but the cardboard won't bend easily

3) Redo the labelling to suit your preferred combination of start day, time signifiers & orientation - I used nail varnish remover to get the old stuff off and Posca pens for my new system

4) Optionally, wrap the sides/back in something more sturdy & aesthetically pleasing to cover up the cardboard - I'm gonna do this eventually (probably washi tape then a layer of varnish) but for now I'm on to

5) Fill with pharmaceuticals and enjoy having gotten one over on the neurodivergent brain demons once again (and having accidentally colour-coded the first two columns quite well, be mildly furious that the last one doesn't match at all)

》 YOU'RE QUEER? WHAT ARE YOUR LABELS?

I'm a gender non-conforming trans man. I go by he/him and it/its pronouns and I mostly use masculine terms (man, dude, guy, etc.) or non-gendered ambiguous terms (thing, mutt, dog, etc.) to refer to myself. That said, all this does vary whenever I feel like it and I've got no intentions of trying to mirror cis men. I see myself as a man in the same way Bugs Bunny is a man, masculine in theory but pretty malleable in practice. A man but tilted a bit too much to the left so it doesn't quite fit on the "pallatable for cis people" gender shelf.

My gender is pretty intertwined with my non-human identity; All genders feel like a costume but ambiguously fruity man is the most comfortable one for me personally. I'm a vaguely man-shaped dog thing that's just trying to resemble a person above all else, if we're being entirely honest here.

I use the labels pansexual and queer pretty interchangeably. Gender doesn't really play a part in who I'm attracted to, it's pretty irrelevant and just kind of a neat bonus more than anything. That said? Overall I'm predominantly attracted to other queer people! I do class myself as acchillean because of my attraction to other men but in a non-committal handwave kind of way, considering how weird my relationship with my own gender currently is.

I consider myself as polyamorous. I can comfortably exist in both monogamous and polyamorous relationships but between the two? Up to now I've found the latter is my preference.

Also, I know I don't owe anyone an explanation about my identity. I'm talking about this because I'd like to (queer expression is fun to talk about yippeeee) and not because I feel obligated to. People aren't owed your life story, especially people on the internet ✌️

No, I don't have a DNI. I've come to realise that the culture surrounding DNI lists in online spaces isn't healthy and I'd far rather just curate my own spaces however I feel like it! Alright alright alright im starting to try and get into the spidergwen comics after learning about her existence through spiderverse and have been rotating her (or at least a version of her that exists in my head) in my skull while she bounces around like the dvd screensaver as I try to work out all of what I’m supposed to read (why are comics like this?)

but to answer your question.... i'm gonna say something controversial here so just run with me.

the short answer is: no. gwen-65 from the comics is not trans.

the spiderverse movies added that to her character (specifically, in atsv; itsv gwen isn't trans-coded at all), likely as a way to at best, acknowledge that spider-gwen is inherently queer... but without interfering with their overpowering need to ship her with a straight boy. or at worst, it's a way to sidestep gwen's sapphicness without getting called out for erasing her queerness. and it worked. people embraced the coding, insist comics gwen should be everything sv gwen is too, and they claim she was always that way (she's not).

the long answer is: here. it's 50+ pages long. i'm not exaggerating. but it's the fullest answer you'll get about what kind of queer gwen is... and it's not trans. i'll take the trans-specific sections of that meta and post them below the cut.

the mid-length answer is: no. there's plenty of evidence for a trans reading, but the coding is shaky at best, and it's basically canon that gwen-65 is cis.

gwen is indisputably queer-coded in the latour run... but the latour run keeps the coding vague enough that you can identify her as whatever kind of queer you want.

sure, gwen could be trans. but the things people point to as 'evidence' can also be read as proof that she's asexual, a lesbian, bi, pan, so on and so forth.

discovering a secret side of yourself during puberty and hiding it from your parent because you're afraid they'll hate or fear you, or have you locked up, if they know? insert any queer identity here.

gwen's coming-out speech to her father? is lifted nearly word for word from gwen's first issue. where it can apply to being any other kind of queer.

concealing who you really are from a straight boy who's attracted to you because you're afraid he'll reject you if he knows, and that being in a romantic relationship that's expected of you will inherently hurt you? again, insert any kind of queer.

having your boyfriend's parents reject you off a single look? yes, that could be very applicable to the trans dating experience. it's more likely that this is intended to reflect the interracial dating experience, since gwen is white and miles is black.

there isn't a point in gwen's solo where the pink, blue and white colors of the trans flag rain down around her. her covers do often use the pink/orange/white of the lesbian flag during the latour run, and moves more towards the blue/purple/pink of the bisexual flag in the mcguire run. if you want to play the color theory game, you'll lose. (... and even in itsv, gwen's also surrounded by pink/orange/white and blue/pink/purple. so just off the colors of her backgrounds in the movie, there isn't a consensus.)

george stacy calling peter's death gwen 'taking a son away from him' is new and unique to the movies. in the comics, peter's death (which she is directly responsible for) is essentially an act of police brutality on gwen's part. and the queer subtext is there, but it's that peter's an incel who gwen defended herself from after refusing to give in to comphet. that entire theme is Gone from the movies, likely to make sure gwen's more positive towards the idea of dating miles.

gwen leaves her dimension right after revealing herself to her dad, but it's not because she's too afraid to stay or thinks she can't go home (george immediately backs down when she reveals herself, never tries to arrest or shoot her, and instantly starts protecting her from the cops). it's because she wants to help the spider-army fight an interdimensional threat. the whole time she's away, she knows she's going back. no theming whatsoever about being a trans girl fleeing an unaccepting world. if anything, earth-65 is more accepting than the rest of the multiverse, which constantly insists to gwen that she must enter heteronormative relationships.

other things that may ring true for the trans experience also have other explanations:

gwen's fear of revealing her secret identity to her friends because she's worried they'll see her as a monster: is a universal teenage anxiety with many different interpretations. but in context... she literally killed their friend and is on the run because of that.

gwen's transience and constant secrecy: is because she's a fugitive. she's not running away from home because she's a trans girl fleeing persecution. she's constantly running because she is guilty of the crime she's being accused of. she did kill peter.

gwen learning she's a part of a subgroup of people who are subject to a disproportionate amount of violence and sexual assault, and objectified yet treated as inherently disposable to the point where their premature and often violent deaths are normalized-- and that these issues are considered unsolvable and acceptable by everyone around her: could read as a commentary on the treatment of trans women by society. it could also apply to queer women, and to women in general.

gwen's love of traditionally masculine nerdy culture and hobbies: is a tactical move to get a mostly-male audience (... who wouldn't be very open about reading about a more conventionally feminine girl) to relate to gwen as a person. they made her a tomboy.

gwen's grungy, androgynous wardrobe and lanky build: are a protective measure to keep gwen from being sexualized by her artists.

gwen's spider-suit has nothing to do with the trans flag, and wasn't originally, pink, white and blue: it was purple, white and blue. the blue was a reference to latour's hometown basketball team, the charlotte hornets. the pink was purple, but it kept being miscolored and now that the movies and animation stuck with pink (especially the spiderverse movies; remember how aggressively pink gwen's backstory sequence was?), it's gonna stay that way. if anything, the shift from purple to pink is some gender essentialist Pink Is The Girl Color So Give It To The Girl Hero bullshit.

gwen's fondness for hoodies: was a very misguided 2014-era commentary on how "wearing a hoodie doesn't make you a criminal." yes, it's referencing that. and it did not age well (especially since gwen is guilty of the crime she's being accused of) so we don't talk about it anymore. it's also a design loophole to make sure she's recognizably feminine, without having to show any hair or skin (because the hood stands in for long hair; more gender norm enforcement).

gwen's dependency on pills to access her powers: is part of a recurring theme in the latour run about substance abuse: gwen ditches and lies to her friends and family, vanishes for weeks and wakes up in bars and alleyways, is presumed dead by her loved ones many times, enters an abusive partnership with a much older man who plies her with drugs to keep her coming back to him, goes on the run with harry osborn (famously a drug addict in the main universe) as her dependency intensifies and he's near death due to his own... and her symbiote, which looks like black tar, is referred to as an addiction. could it be a metaphor for gwen transitioning? yes! is the more likely subtext that gwen's abusing drugs to cope with peter's death, especially given that her dependency on the pills and initial bond with gwenom are negative? yes. if you want to use the transition metaphor, go ahead. but be careful of what the negative framing then implies about the transition.

gwen using "we" pronouns in her gwenom form: is something all the venoms do. take it or leave it.

during the latour run, if you want to interpret gwen as trans, you can. there's plenty of fuel, and there's never a point where gwen says "i'm cis" out loud.

... until sitting in a tree. ironically, the crossover that got gwen in the spiderverse movies to begin with is the point where the possibility of gwen being trans ends, because it canonizes that earth-8 is a "possible future" of earth-65 (aka gwen-8 is a future version of gwen-65; same person, same consciousness, same body). and earth-8 is a world where gwen has biological children with miles. logically speaking, the only way that can happen is if gwen has a uterus (because you know miles is definitely cis).

is it hard canon that gwen gave birth to the kids? no. but look at the heteronormative hellscape that is earth-8 and the gwiles ship. gwen being the vessel for miles's biokids is an inherent part of the fantasy (because it's proof they had sex, it ties her to him forever, and it's that weird advance-my-bloodline shit straight people are into). the writers and fandom want gwen to have the hardware for that to be possible. they will never want the door closed to that possibility, so realistically gwen will never be transgender.

(... extremely funny to me that gwiles killed the possibility of trans gwen for a cishet nuclear family fantasy, then brought it back and pushed it hard a decade later to dodge straightwashing allegations, and both times it was to make sure miles could date her. pick a struggle.)

so. gwen is cis. and she'll almost certainly stay cis.

after the latour run, the mcguire run introduces the elements that atsv adopts: gwen feels unwanted, persecuted and alone in her world, is upset that she can't have a romance there, is driven out by being accused of a crime she didn't commit and starts aimlessly multiverse bouncing.

but given that it's pretty much canon that gwen's cis, the trans-coding you can squeeze out of gwen being run out of restaurants while she's on a date is paper thin. you can read gwen as trans, but she's definitely not being coded as such.

past the latour run, though gwen's sapphicness and avoidance of heteronormativity keep getting more and more obvious (the queer coding narrows down our options from the latour run's "who knows but she sure doesn't want to date or marry men" to the mcguire run's "gwen's not asexual and probably sapphic" to smash's "gwen's into women but in the closet about it"), the gender aspects completely fade away. gwen-65 is queer, but she's a cis woman.

... but. there is a canon transgender spider-gwen in the comics, that even appears in 2023, the year of atsv's release (... which definitely feels on purpose).

in shadow clones, we get a glimpse of dozens of alternate gwens across the multiverse (several of whom seem to be queer). including this guy to the lower right.

who is the only male gwen variant shown.

who has a trans flag and what looks like a trans symbol (⚧) pinned to his backpack. it's a canon transmasc spider-gwen.

he's very intentionally shown to not be our spider-gwen from earth-65... in the miniseries that comes out barely a few months after atsv. they're telling you 'we know a lot of the people who are reading this comic came from atsv and think gwen's trans. no, she isn't. but hey, there's one out there somewhere, if you squint!'

that's the most we'll ever realistically get of a canon trans spider-gwen in the comics. since marvel comics still won't let gwen-65 come out as bisexual, there's just no way they'll let her be trans at all. they're not gonna retcon a reveal that she was trans all along. they're not gonna have gwen go through a coming-out process that ends in her identifying as trans. it would be cool! but we have to be realistic, and realistically... it's not gonna happen.

gwen is and will be trans-coded in the spiderverse movies (...as long as a possible earth-8 ending doesn't blow a hole in that headcanon), but that won't spread to the comics, or likely anywhere else-- including future animation and live-action depictions.

in the long run, spiderverse gwen's most likely just a one-off whose lasting legacy on the character will be letting the general public know that spider-gwen is queer... while also delaying comics-gwen's confirmation as bisexual by muddying the water about what type of queer she is (which buys more time for gwiles to swoop in and stop her coming out from happening anytime soon... or at all).

oh my god... spoilers under the cut but i need to talk about here for sweethearts

this is the first arcadekitt game i've played [not the first ive seen!! i saw my neighbor enid in a playthrough format and decided to check out the author's other work.] and??? best one i could've chosen i loved the experience.

first off even without the plot twist the game is really good. its so sweet and genuine, all of the characters are super nice and the dialogue feels natural. each character is likeable, and you have equal reasons to like and dislike each of them. their flaws are balanced out as equally as their pros. also?? the pride flags were really cleverly incorporated into the designs. especially acanthibar... the others are cool i love em but acanthibar... he takes the cake. the aro sleeves... the trans sash... he's giving it his all dude highest respect for my frog guy. also, i do like how the pride flags kinda matched with each of the characters personalities if it made sense? there's more to be said about that but biggest example i can draw from is vatilis and crowven... vatilis, try as they might, wears their heart on their sleeve and has a hard time keeping their emotions down, so theirs is a sweater that compliments the rest of the outfit, but you can still see it. crowven is casual about it, if you bring it up he'll confirm it with pride and isn't as scared of hiding his emotions. his main alt sprite is him itching hsi nose with the pride bracelet hand...

also mary... the fact that until we see her most of what we've heard about her is the fact that she's "scary" and weird from netina, and that she doesn't like being called that from crowven. and when we actually meet her... she's so kind, out of everyone in the game she has the most decorated, personality-filled room, and is generally just a big sweetheart. also points. she and reggie are autism4autism ace4ace they're literally adorable together... who gave them the riiight oh my goddd /pos

anyway!!! :-3 i really like games that subvert your expectations both narratively and aesthetically. which sucks, because i don't see it done often. but??? oh my god here for sweethearts filled that niche perfectly... the genuine suprise i felt hearing them mention "hunger" until i realized... the protagonist never mentioned anything beyond "i'd feel nice" to why they wanted that connection... and then i was pleasantly surprised by the twist that the protag was here to feed off of the heartbreak ooooh my god... genuinely everything i had building up for the dance stopped in the best way possible.

like the signs were pointing towards natina being the secret killer, but... reginald being the supposed killer the ghost saw was actually the first witness of the crime, and twyla actually being the one to commit the murder? and how, once you realize this, it's already too late?

and twyla being onto us the whole time... asking us if we eat in our room at all, having gunther distract us when she literally said she just needed him out of the way for a little bit to get his keys, which she could have easily done without us. once you get that information, so many events prior make so much sense! hell, some of the incorrect dialogue makes sense! of course we'd accidentally slip up, we're hungry and desperate!! its just .... ooo eated. pun intented.

anyway the only real con i had about this game was that there wasn't a seperation between how you presented and what pronouns people used for you. but even then i'm fine with that!! theres only like two moments that i encountered it, its fairly casual and ultimately didn't take away from the experience. + i know it would've been hard to code... the game already has so much going for it in that department so i get it!! and plus... they were all conveniently terms i'm okay with being used for me so there's that hehe [oh they also all still use they/them for you no matter what. its just like a few instances of them calling you pretty so again; its okay and in fact im fine with it being kept that way tbh]

regardless!! i had so much fun with this game, please play it on itch.io its free and really entertaining. it takes a while to complete, it took me an entire afternoon, so keep that in mind. but i personally really liked it!!

And Omg it was so good Omg. First of all!! The ART it’s so. Pretty. And I love how, even though they changed around and experimented with the art styles, the entire movie was very obviously from that Franchise.

And the CHARACTERS. Hobbie and Patvir!!! My beloveds!! And Mayday (the baby, I think her name was)!!! How Patvir’s entire dimension was a different artstyle! How Hobbie’s artstyle followed him!!

People who brush off the flag and the trans-coded speech she gave to her dad honestly dont realize how queer friendly the movie production was (Like queer artists and allies working on it) and that EVERY LITTLE detail of this movie is planned out purposely. Every little background, trans flags/colors, her speech and the meanings behind it were planned out and well.....I just think the queer interpretation everyones getting was no accident.

I remember when I thought the first movie was peak animation then they just blew it the wway with this one somehow!!! They just keep raising the bar and I'm lovingggg it. All the new character models and backgrounds for different universes look phenomenal<33

LOVED the cliffhanger ending. That shit gave me psychic damage at the end of the film and that's god damn compliment. The hype was so intense and I'm actually sooo glad were getting another movie. Lots of potential for more content and screentime for some characters who's didnt get much this film.. urrrgh!!! cant wait!!! Super glad I got you to watch it, hope it was worth itt<33 :]

Chapter 3: Hit and Run

Anna floored it. 

"Do you think Nixon has a reincarnation?" 

"What?" 

"Richard Milhaus Nixon, 37th president of-" 

"No I know who Nixon is." 

Anna scowled at the GPS mounted on the windscreen.  

"Then-" 

"I don't think anybody admires Nixon enough to want to be him. Red, this road look right to you?" 

Red pulled the phone from its cradle and let their eyes trace over the map displayed on its screen.  

Their nose was still broken, and their face covered in bruises; they didn't let it show, but they felt like shit.  

"This address doesn't look right. I think you fucked up the zip code." 

Anna looked out of the window at the desert landscape pouring by. "Who even gets fucking mail out here? I mean, is it coming on a fucking horse?" 

"You know we're in a car right?" 

The cool automated voice came from Anna's phone as Red finished keying in the correct address. "ROUTE RECALCULATING." 

They remounted it on the windscreen. 

"Should be right now." 

"Shit, I mean, it's all gotta be wackjob Mormons out here, right?" 

"Better than a wackjob Satanist?" 

"No I - shut the fuck up. I mean, I don't wanna get shot at if we pull up. They'll probably think we're tax collectors or something." 

Red looked out at the blank road ahead of them. There was no other cars on the road. No buildings. Nothing but the car, two girlfriends, and desolate wastes as far as the eye could see. It was kind of pretty, though. Put them in mind of Mars. 

"Do you think the IRS hires sexy trans people now?" 

"Get chasers to open the door more, right?" 

"How often would that really be a factor?" 

"More often than you'd think-" 

They hit a cattle grid; Boleskine whirred for a second as the entire body shook, and Red swore and dropped their phone. 

"Slow down!" They said, scrabbling to the side of their chair for it. 

"No." Anna put her foot down, changed gears; watched the speed needle twitch up a few more gradings. "I wanna get here before the sun goes down." 

"It's 3pm!" 

Anna jabbed a finger at the phone. "2 hour drive to your destination." 

"Have you actually checked to make sure that he's still there?" 

"No, you check. I'm driving." 

Red managed to retrieve their phone, looked at the incarnate app. "Oooh." 

"What?" 

"oooooh-" 

"Fucking what?! What is it?!' 

"5 miles from your destination." 

"What?!" 

Anna grabbed the phone out of Red's hand. "Give me- What? How- the address was right like, an hour ago!" 

"He's travelled 2 hours in one?" Red raised an eyebrow. 

Anna looked at the map. "I guess he could have driven across the lake? That'd cut it down." 

"Or teleported?" 

"Neither of those were in the spec, anyway." 

"Slow down, he might be waiting by the side of the road or something." 

"What, he'll flag us down?" 

"Yeah."  

Red looked at the road. "Like, you know Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas-" 

"We're not high." 

"Could be." 

"What?" 

"Idk, send an @ to of the guys I know in the discord, ask if he wants to bring us some-" 

"We're in the middle of nowhere!"  

Anna vaguely waved a hand around. "That app had him miles off the road, I hope you know I'm not pulling off and getting stuck." 

"Well we can't DM him because he's not in the server, so what?" 

"Look, just keep a look out. I'll keep my eyes on the road, you look for any...fucking, hitchhikers or whatever." 

There was a silence for a few minutes, filled only by the GPS occassionally chiming in to helpfully remind them to continue driving on the only road for miles. 

"I mean, Nixon won 49 states, right?" 

"That election was rigged." 

"But no he had popular support. I mean, there was even the old bumper sticker, right?" 

"What?" 

"Don't blame me, I'm from Massachussets. Because it was the only state that didn't-" 

"Look, even if he had admirers in fucking, 1973 or whatever-" 

"72 dumbass" 

"1972, he doesn't now! And besides, even if you look up to a guy, doesn't mean you want to be him." 

Anna looked at Red. "I mean, Nixon was pretty miserable, right?" 

"I've seen people 'carn as people who fucking killed themselves!"  

"Yeah but. Like. Not in a sexy way." 

"Speak for yourself." Red held up a pic of Nixon on their phone. "I'd fuck those cheeks." 

"Why-why did you have that pic saved-" 

"Seems self evident." 

"Also, did you just say carn?" 

"Yeah. I'm inventing new slang. I'm on the forefront of things. I'm an influencer-" 

"Shut up. It's incarnate. That's already a shortening of reincarnate, you are not shortening it further to fucking - Italian food-" 

"That's carne, dumbass."  

"Same root! Meat, flesh, et cet!"  

"Et cet? Who's the one shortening words now-" 

Another cattle grate, another Red phone drop. 

"I said slow down!" 

"Look, if we pass a guy, I'll turn round! There's no cops round here!" 

"This road isn't wide enough, dumbass. You'll get stuck!"  

Anna moaned. "I need a cigarette." 

"Well, pull over if you're gonna get one. I'm not ending up in some sand dune-" 

"This isn't that kind of desert. Dumbass." She imitated Red's tone on the last word. 

Red stuck out their pierced tongue at Anna, who struggled not to break into a smirk.  

"Made you laugh." 

"Did not." 

"Would you clap Nixon's cheeks?" 

"You clapped L Ron Hubbard's cheeks!" 

"Damn right! And I'd fucking do it again. Answer the question." 

"If we meet a reincarnation of Nixon are you gonna fuck him?" 

"Well now that you've said that, I have to." 

Anna started corpsing. "He'd be racist!"  

"Hot." 

"GOP voter!" 

"Hot." 

"Probably transphobic!" 

"Ooh, hot. I hope he calls me a bull dyke-" 

There was a loud thud as the car hit the child running out in front of it, hurling his body across the hood and shattering his frame against the tarmac behind.  

"FUCK!" 

"What the-" 

"PULL OVER PULL OVER PULL OVER-" 

"I'm trying to!!" 

Anna hit the brakes and swung the wheel; as Red has predicted, it hit the edge of the road, and came to a messy, juddering stop.  

Annabelle Boleskine in neutral and peered at the spiderweb patterns on the shattered windscreen as Red frantically tore off their seatbelt, kicked open the door, and sprinted back down the highway towards the bloodied body lying in their wake. 

It was a kid, as the size of the figure ragdolling across the chassis had made clear seconds ago; maybe 10 or 11 years old. He was Latino, with dark skin and hair, neck broken and scalp split open in five places to show red and white of skull. Blood was weeping out of every orifice; his twisted posture held one arm below him on the wet tarmac, another stretched out in a motionless claw on the road. He wasn't breathing. 

"He's dead! ANNA! YOU FUCKING KILLED A KID-" 

Anna came, at a slower pace, stomping along. Her face was coldset, but she was pale, and her hands were fumbling at her bag for cigarettes.  

"CPR." Her voice was quiet. "Can we-" 

"Fucking look at him! CPR? He doesn't have a fucking ribcage! He looks like a-" 

"Shut up! Shut up. Look-" Anna knelt besides the body. She felt for a pulse. Nothing. His eyes were closed, already starting to bruise livid where his face had slammed into the tarmac. 

"He jumped in front." She said, quietly, not looking at Red. 

"What?! No! You hit him! You were going at 90mph and not looking you fucking hit him! You killed a fucking kid, Anna!" Red was starting to tear up. "What are we going to do?!" 

Anna pressed the back of her hand, now obviously shaking, into his cheek. She didn't seem to know what she was doing. 

"Anna you -" Red's voice caught. "You can't heal him." 

"He - I -" Anna fought to regain her composure, then when she next spoke, she was cooly measured again. "I had my eyes on the road. He jumped out. I saw him. You didn't-" 

"Anna..." Red stared with hollow eyes. "You.." 

They were both interrupted, with a start, by a wheeze from the child.  

Anna jumped back in horror, and landed on her butt on the road as she let out a little cry. Her eyes were wide as she watched him start to twitch, and move.  

Air was dragged, with a horrible ragged sound, into ruined lungs. Torn muscles tried to pull on shattered bones. The head writhed on a broken neck. 

"Fuck! Fuck, he's still alive?!" 

"I didn't- I didn't- heal-" 

Anna was trembling harder now.  

Red heard that last word, and looked closer. They saw what was happening before Anna did.  

Beneath the boy's skin, bones were moving. His skeleton was reassembling; knitting itself back together. Ribs that had visibly punched through skin on a blood-soaked shirt sank back down like control rods into the diagraphm, that began to pump as the heart beat strongly. Seeping blood stopped, and cuts closed. His breathing, at first gasping and gurgling from a throat filled with froth, become desperately alive. His hands scrabbled at the ground, eyes still closed as his unconscious body began to pull itself back together. 

"We. Are. So. So. Lucky." 

Anna, trembling, managed to claw the cigarette packet from the handbag. "Is that- him then? The- healer?" 

"Oh shit, yeah. Let me look, one sec." 

Turning away - with relish, frankly - from the spasming, gasping little boy, eyes now open but unseeing, neck agonisingly bending back into place, starting to moan between gasps as vertebrae repaired themselves, Red jogged back to the car, and retrieved their phone.  

The dot matched up perfectly with the child; they watched the blue dot, representing them, drift over across the greyish representation of the road, and overlap with the pulsing orange incarnated dot as they moved back to Anna and him. 

He let out a scream of pain, head bending back as his spine arced. He cried out in Spanish, rolled over into the foetal position, spasming as the last of his wounds healed. 

"What is he-" Red started. 

"I don't-" 

"It...didn't....work..!" The boy's voice came, in English this time. 

"What-"  

"Oh, so did he really..." Red looked sheepishly at Anna, who didn't look comforted. "Sorry." 

"It didn't work!" He screamed, burying his face in his hands as he achieved full mobility. He barely seemed aware that they were there. 

"Hey, kid. You...did you...are you ok?" Red tried. 

He moaned something in Spanish. 

"Do you know what that means?" 

"I don't speak Spanish!" Anna snapped. She stood up, her hands now still enough to pull a cigarette from the packet. She put it in her mouth, and moved to put the packet away and retrieve her lighter. 

The boy moaned, and suddenly reached out, grabbing at Anna's boot with a bloody hand. 

Anna gasped, and instinctively jumped back, out of his reach. Red moved forwards in response, taking his hand in theirs as he mumbled something incomprehensible. 

Anna ran the back of a troubled hand through her hair, box still gripped in its palm, and moved to get the lighter for the cigarette in her mouth...before her eyes focused inwards and down on it, and widened. Her lips fell open, and the not-a-cigarette plopped out, and fell to the floor. The box fell from her other hand, hit the ground, and spilled its contents.  

Matchsticks.  

A single matchstick, that had been a cigarette about ten seconds before, was laying on the ground, still wet from her mouth. About a hundred matchsticks had fallen out of the clearly marked cigarette box, that had been full of cigarettes about twenty seconds before.  

Anna stared, eyes wide, as Red turned to look, kneeling by the boy's side, one hand knitted with his left, the other on his hair, and saw. Saw her goth girlfriend, gaping open-mouthed, at a spill of matchsticks on the road.  

"He-" 

"I don't..." The boy managed, weakly, eyes closed. His forehead was pressed against Red's cool hand. "I don't like...smoking..." 

Anna's eyes were still wide as saucers. "Who is he.." She said, in a low voice. 

"Kid. Kid. Who...who are you incarnated from?"  

No response but a weak cough, and a gasp of pain as a result. A little blood trickled over his chin, from a still unhealed cut just under his lip. 

Red, keeping one hand on the barely conscious boy's face, picked up one of the matchsticks. They examined it in awe.  

"Transfiguration...healing of self and others...fast travel...who's that?"  

Anna shook an unknowing head. She was starting to collect herself, although she kept making mournful glances at the lost box of former cigarettes. 

"I don't know either, but some pretty major medic I'd bet, or something." Red looked down at the boy. "Hey kid, you're pretty powerful." They playfully slapped his chest; he cried out, and they cringed. "Sorry, sorry."   

"Red...your face..." 

"Huh?" Red touched their face, their fingertips soaked red from his bleeding. No bruises. No broken nose. They twisted their shoulder, so recently painfully reset. Nothing.  

"Man...that's something, huh?" 

They looked down at the boy, who seemed to have drifted back into unconsciousness, head pressed against Red's side.  

"Well, if he won't tell us..." Red took out their phone, clicked through. Tapped out a few lines of code, then gently pressed the boy's limp thumb to the screen. 

"I mean, do you wanna take bets?" They said, as the progress bar rolled on the screen. 

"Not in the mood." 

"No, c'mon! I mean...maybe he's fucking, carn of Jonas Salk or something." 

"Jonas Salk could turn cigarettes into matchsticks?" 

"Well, I dunno. Representation of better public health, I guess? You know how weird these things can be sometimes. Probably some famous doc, like I sai-" 

Red froze, mid-expression, looking at the screen.  

"What?"  

"..." 

"Who is it?" 

"......" 

"Red, tell me-" 

"Jesus. Fucking. Christ." 

"What? C'mon, who is it?" 

"I just told you..." 

There was a long silence.

Anna grabbed the phone from Red, then stared at it with wild eyes.  

She took a second to read the name of the person the boy was the reincarnation was, then dropped the phone, and ran.
