Every now and then, I'll be having a good day and suddenly be hit with the biggest wave of sadness when I think about Bill and Ford's relationship.

Because, yes, they HAD a relationship. Whether it be platonic, romantic, or a secret, sinister third option, it was deeper than just research partners. They were close in a way neither had ever experienced before. It's not just implied, it's outright CONFIRMED both by the Book of Bill and Alex himself.

And I'm not here to preach about how perfect BillFord is because it's not. It's toxic as shit, and THAT'S WHY I LOVE IT. It's nuanced and interesting, with enough layers to make Shrek himself blush. Because yeah. Bill was an abuser. He manipulated Ford for years, and tortured the ever-loving shit out of him both in 1982 and Weirdmageddon. He has no remorse, and is completely irredeemable.

Yet Ford did mean something to him. Through the snippet of a therapy session in thisisnotawebsitedotcom.com, Bill admits that he did care for Ford, but played it off as Ford being useful (this guy is in the Theraprism for a REASON). During Weirdmageddon, he could've killed Ford. He really could've. But instead, he turned him to gold and paraded him around like a trophy. He even used Ford like a stress toy in a deleted scene. He went on a drunken rampage because his wife was lost to the multiverse, for god's sake.

But Ford MEANT SOMETHING TO HIM. On a deeper level, Ford was the only person to ever truly understand him. Not just as a freak. Ford was different from the Henchmaniacs, from what we can gather. The Henchmaniacs were outcasts, sure, but they lived in fear of Bill. They were chaotic as him, but they couldn't really get to know him if he had the power to demolish them with a snap of his fingers. The Henchmaniacs were his squad, but Ford was his PERSON.

Ford, despite all the worship and idolization, wasn't afraid of Bill until Bill revealed his true colors. Bill was able to mentally spar with him, and have normal conversations outside of the portal. Like, sure, Bill could have been just playing nice to get what he wanted, but it actually seemed like he enjoyed their talks. I mean, I wouldn't ravage an interdimensional Taco Bell over someone I was secretly annoyed by. He saw when Ford broke his stress ball and immediately went to talk to him. I mean, sure, his advice was shit and OBVIOUSLY meant to manipulate Ford away from thinking about his brother, but he then proceeded to reveal to this random-ass human the only remnant of his home dimension. Something we're not even sure the Henchmaniacs have ever seen. He was VULNERABLE.

So now all I can think about is Bill spouting off random facts about history he may or may not have been involved in, and Ford sitting in his little chair in the mindscape just... enraptured. Not just because this extraterrestrial deity choose to spitball fun facts about slip and slides, but because he's just INTERESTED. Bill can make a weird, insane joke that makes sense only if you squint at it, and Ford laughs. Not because he's afraid of being smote. Not because he worships this being. Just laughing because he finds Bill endearing. He understands Bill's humor, his cadence, his weird way of seeing the world, and just rolls with it because he's the same way. Because let's be real, Ford's weird as shit too! This man has tasted human blood, for fuck's sake. And not just tasted it from a cut, I mean CRAVING IT LIKE A GODDAMN VAMPIRE. The blacklight version of Journal 3 is wild, that's all I'll say.

They just... god, I think about them way too often. The more I mull it over, the closer I lean towards the "secret, sinister third option" actually being canon because I don't even know what they are anymore. They're the embodiment of "Are they lovers?"

I like to think that Vulcans who come to understand that Humans just can’t try to process emotions the same way as them, it’s just healthiest to let it out in harmless ways, decide that venting and stuff should be taken just as seriously as Vulcan’s meditation time, and will encourage the Humans around them to complain about what’s upsetting them

so, i have some thoughts. i feel like the game doesn't explore doey much, so i'm gonna take that as an opportunity to stretch him a lil.

in short, i see him as neither one whole nor 3 kids in a trench coat, but something in the middle of the two: a grown up who never really got to experience a proper childhood, the 3 originals in a blend with each other.

the time between creation and game events likely is enough for them to learn how to cooperate (up until. yknow). collectively or individually though, goddamn they need therapy

Parts operate more or less seamlessly, but depending on situation some may show more or less of their traits.

When stressed, cooperation between parts may break down.

present strongest when angry, most of anger processing goes through him.

not actually angry/cranky all of the time though, just a bit more gruff/edgy compared to the other two. tends to show teeth when talking.

over the years learned to control his rage better, can redirect it into being a bit of a troll w/ the others

understandably, safe haven's destruction made him revert and lose all restraint, resulting in lashing out, mixed with extreme emotions from others.

Jack

loved doey strongest before conversion (rip), as such expressions tend to default to his

learned to cope with constantly fighting for survival by cracking jokes and being more optimistic

present strongest when happy, may speak more childishly when in distress or comfortable

reverts into reliving trauma of death and family loss with safe haven's destruction

Matt

present strongest when focused on the leader role, strikes a balance between kevin and jack

through time learned to focus more on necessary action rather than allowing to succumb to past guilt

definitely still very stressed out from responsibility, especially after poppy leaving, learned not to show it through cooperation with kevin and jack

safe haven's destruction just plunges him straight into a guilt spiral

Note pointing at bottom notes for each: safe haven's destruction is a massively traumatic event for them, resulting in the three regressing into child selves from distress, mixed in with emotions from individual traumatic memories

He gives you enough space to strum the guitar yourself, though his chin doesn't seem to move from its spot on your shoulder. Cold, blue eyes peer down with a look of pride in them as you fumble around with the strings, and [REDACTED] pays no notice whenever you mess up a note or rush through the tempo. Instead, he gives you an encouraging nod of his head and steadily taps your thigh in an attempt to keep you in time with the rhythm.

Soon enough, [REDACTED]'s bedroom is filled with a soft melody, and you beam up at your partner with a wide, accomplished grin on your face.

"Here," Leaning back into the warmth of his chest, you shift the guitar in your shared laps so that [REDACTED] can easily reach over to grab it. "Why don't you play something for me now?"

A look of genuine consideration pulls at their features before they take you up on your offer — gently pulling you and the guitar closer to his chest before peering over your shoulder once more.

It must've been second nature with how easily his fingers fall into place, and before long, the immediate sound of a soft, haunting song starts to fill the once-empty silence once more. Although you weren't able to see his expression, you could tell that [REDACTED] had found their flow state with the steady rise and fall of his chest, as well as how languid their grip on the instrument seemed to be.

After what feels like hours, his melancholic song soon comes to a slow stop — until the only noises left are your shared breathing and the quiet hum of your partner's PC in the background.

"I used t'play that song for my sister when we were younger." He muses, "It used t'calm her down whenever—"

Almost suddenly, you feel [REDACTED] adjust his position from behind you before his grip on the guitar returns. "Here, d'you wanna learn something else? Why don't I teach you another easy riff?"

I just realized. One thing that Optimus will certainly be educated on by the Primes in the Haunted AU is the various was One Can Kill A Quintesson! Leaving some Autobots confused at times when he's teaching them in return because 'This sounds pretty Specific...???'

It's slightly competitive on the Primes' part because yeah, the Deceptions do got the High Guard being good at killing Quintessons too but. They're the Real Experts. (Are they salty? Naaaah they're not. Much. Kinda.)

they got so good at squishing the goddamn bugs and they're thrilled they can save Optimus the pain of figuring out their weak points through trial and error like they did. they're gonna make a pro out of their baby brother in no time.

and if they just so happen to know some of the Decepticons will be majorly pissed off at the fact OP is already on par with the best of what used to be the High Guard when he only has a fraction of their experience... well, happy coincidences, y'know?

and if they happen to teach Optimus how to crack open a Quintesson in just the right way to make some Decepticons see ghosts through him... that's between them and the people they're haunting :)
