Yeah I know Al is an ace in a hole but I have some headcanons about him, the day he'll find the good person.

(Take requests guys, I crave them 🙏)

• He is gentle with his hands, did you notice how soft he is with them? Bro is afraid to break everything he touches, he would hold your hand with care.

• He loves to cup your cheek and look into your eyes, it can be creepy sometimes tho.

• Either holds your hand or holds you by the waist.

• His smile contorts when you touch his ears or kiss him. (In a good way)

• Would definitely take you on walks, either at night or at day, it doesn't matter to him.

• Wouldn't stop keep talking during the walk, he'd fidget with his microphone at the same time, making it twirl and everything.

• Makes you twirl randomly.

• Uses "My dear", "Beloved", "Sweetheart", "Darling" as pets names.

• Lets you style his hair and touch his ears.

• His behavior wouldn't change too much, since he never really experienced love.

• Would take on his mother to show you love tho, making you Jambalaya.

• Teases you.

• Takes you to Cannibal town.

• You get along very well with Rosie, she loves you.

• Rosie gives you advices about what to gift Alastor.

• You would try and give him flowers, even if Rosie told you that he prefered human flesh.

Riddle is a little afraid of horror movies

His mother had never allowed him to watch anything over pg-13, so he’s really unaware of the wonders of horror media

You probably start him off with scarier kids movies, like Coraline

He’s really freaked out by the opening scene

(Probably deeply relates the other mother to his own)

If you get him into more objectively terrifying movies, like (one of my favs) Texas Chainsaw Massacre, he’ll try to distract himself by holding on to you, and talking about the camerawork, the artistic value and all that

He will sit with you on the couch, hands covering his eyes, peeking out slightly

Doesn’t love overt guts and all that, but probably enjoys the more subtle, unnerving horror, that’s what really freaks him out

Considers you to be extremely brave, probably brags to the other dorm leaders about you

He also probably enjoys horror movies, but when he watches them with you, he feels the need to prove himself a little

Loves cheesy slasher flicks, especially if you both sit there and make fun of them together

Adores watching B horror movies with you, the worse the movie, the more fun you both have

Hates the tropes involving women in those types of films, thinks its super disrespectful to assume girls are stupid enough to just open the door for the killer

One of those people who either falls asleep mid movie, or talks through it with you, either way it's pretty fun

Adores the more old school horror, like 1931’s Dracula and creepy comedy, like The Addams Family

People tend to characterize him as a lazy brute, but he’s also a royal, so he probably grew up appreciating some art and vintage media, so I think he’d appreciate black and white movies

(he’d rather die than admit it, but he definitely feels all mushy inside watching the Addams Family)

He also probably gets mildly disturbed during build up scenes, jumpscares and all that, but it’s usually just because of his heightened beastman senses

Hes terrified, I’ll just leave that there

Jkjk I could never leave out my favorite fishman

He’s horrified during practically any part of the movie, but especially during the big finale scene (think Scream) 

However big is fear is, his need to prove himself as a big strong manly man is even bigger, so he’ll act like he’s not scared at all

He;s really bad at it tho, so expect to literally have him on your lap by the credits

He definitely sticks to the less scary movies, like The Boy which just sort of unnerved him more than anything

If you’re like, a super horror buff, he’ll stick around as best as he can

He wants to encourage your interests!

Pro tip: invite the twins to come around for a big movie night, they’ll be cracking jokes throughout while Azul looks like he’s about to combust

Literally sits through everything with a calm-to-happy expression

Every time a new flick catches your attention, he’ll get tickets

"N-No! It's not creepy or anything at all! I just... I'm just still not used to it! That's all!"

⊱ but of course he slowly gets used to it and is visibly more comfortable around you and even admires your abilities while fighting

⊱ he really becomes amazed by your skills with time but not in like any creepy psychopathic way

⊱ probably speaks about you to his roommate to show you off and later you get many questions from him maybe even in slight teasing way but not with intentions to hurt your feelings

DUMB TSATS predictions before the book comes out and ruins my fun PART 2!!!

1. Nico dies and either Jason or Will has to do trials of Orpheus to get him back

2. Nico becomes a god, and thats the thing he has to lose or whatever re: the prophecy

3. Alabaster will be in it, whether as a protagonist, antagonist or anti-hero, he will be a PROBLEM (and effectively the third party in the quest for a bit)

4. Lou Ellen Will introduce Alabaster to Will and Nico bc they need to learn to mist travel into the underworld and that unfortunately only Al knows how to do. Even though Lou is head of Hecate kids.

5. When Alabaster sees Will and Nico he says he doesn’t like “the creepy one” and it becomes apparent as he describes him that he is referring to Will. “He smiles too much, looks fake, don’t trust him” . Lou is confused by this.

6. This observation sparks an old fight between Will and Nico and how Will doesn’t understand how people perceive Nico as creepy.

7. Al will watch this interaction with interest because he “doesn’t have a television”. Lou will tell him he needs to gain back some social skills

8. Alabaster will mist travel them in a pinch just as Nico gets the hang of it and it throws them all off.

9. Alabaster, Nico and Will travel through the underworld. Al and Will bicker about things (most notably about whether Lotr or Star Wars is the better trilogy)

10. Al and nico have a conversation about saving dead friends. Al says his “heroes never die” line and Nico retorts with a smirk that “we’re Greek that’s all our heroes do”

11. They meet Ethans ghost. The ghost of Ethan also calls Will Creepy, and Al has a heartfelt moment where Ethan tells him that he needs to forgive himself. Al still stubborn doesn’t listen and insists that Ethan should leave with him as a mistform. Ethan asks Al whether he’d do it all again, knowing now that Ethan had turned at the last moment.

12. Will says something to affect about not being able to stop death bc he has unaddressed survivor guilt he’s projecting.

13. Nico does not like this, because he kinda agrees with Al (doesn’t want to address the fact that he’s been thinking about Jason and whether he could save him)

14. They get attacked before Al can finish his convo with Ethan’s ghost. Alabaster has to fend off the threat to give Will and Nico time to get into Tartarus. He says his silly “heroes never die” line ans charges off. Nico calls after him “We’re Greek! That’s like all heroes do!” (This time crying instead of smirking).

15. Will and Nico get to Tartarus and are captured by whatever that thing is bc they think they’re saving Bob. Nico gets to say a bad word as a treat.

16. Bob actually saves them, and Nico asks why he was calling for help. He reveals it wasn’t him. Nico listens and hears another call. He follows it without checking if Will is with him.

17. Isolated Nico gets barraged by the “Listen” warning and Nico finds that it was Akhlys using a “Jason puppet” to lure Nico to her.

18. It’s not a puppet and when this is somehow revealed and Nico says they have to go save Jason.

19. Some sort of battle or showdown with the actual villain whether it’s Akhlys or if Akhlys is working with/for someone else likely the Other Titans . Bob is injured but gets his old memories back. And has to deal with reconciling his new and old friendships

20. When it seems like everything is lost. And Bob has decided to be on their side even tho they are probably all gonna die down in Tartarus. Alabaster returns with a ghost army of purgatory Titan supporters and save Nico and company (alabaster uses this save as definitive proof that Lotr is the superior trilogy as he has in essence “pulled an Aragorn”)

21. Will let’s him have the win, but adds Al could be a son of Apollo with how dramatic he is.

22. Al comments that that would make them brothers.

23. Will cringes and says “I’d rather die”

24. Jason’s ghost is freed. Nico has to actually deal with the fact that he died as well as the fact that he was ignoring that he had feelings for him. Will hears this part.

24. Alabaster has to see all his Titan army friends going off to Elysium bc it’s revealed he somehow got that deal for them for helping Nico. He doesn’t want them to leave bc he doesn’t want to be the sole survivor again but he has to deal with that.

25. Will can’t heal Bob, who is extremely wounded . Will has to deal with that.

26. Essentially all three of them get to deal with their own special flavor of survivor’s guilt. Nico with the they died bc I wasn’t there/couldn’t help them. Will with the i did everything I could to help them and they died anyway and Alabaster with the “it’s my fault they’re dead”kind the thing that is lost is whatever defense mechanism each was using to deal with those traumas

27. This post will not get as much attention as the other one bc it not as funny or amusing (or brief)

Ok so what if Graves and Alejandro had met before but like younger like 15 years old Alejandro Mets Graves (also 15 years old) when Graves’s family is on vacation in Las Almas and Phillip is like Alejandro’s bisexual awakening and he tries to talk to him, but his English is kind of bad so he can’t really talk properly but Phillip can understand him perfectly but his vacation is up but they always send letters to each other until they both join the military and lose contact with each other until the game they meet again and Alejandro is talking to Rudy about how he looks familiar (same thing, vice versa but with Graves’s shadows 🤭)

im sniffing around in very old asks that i forgot about during my months long disappearance (i died and came back wrong) and found this and even tho it's REALLY late i still wanted to post this i like the way you think.

i can just imagine how awkward they are (like teenagers generally are) (especially queer teenagers) trying to navigate whatever it is. ohhh he's so cool i hope we get to hang out more and watch the sunset and maybe hold hands a little huh why? no reason. alejandro leaning hard into learning english, definitely not to be able to talk to the pretty boy he met and doesn't have a crush on. religiously keeping up with the letters, sending each other gifts and fun trinkets. graves going through a tough time in his twenties and them joining military, and alejandro is so bummed out that they stopped talking and graves doesn't write back. writing his newly created email in the last letter, just in case, and, well, moving it to digital would be faster and convenient, right? nothing ever comes of it, though (graves didn't even get it - he doesn't live at that address anymore).

so there's this very familiar looking guy and he's not sure if it really actually could be _the_ guy, but he's not sure he should ask what if it's like creepy and how's he gonna go about it like "hey by any chance didn't you have a pen pal in late 90s" and rudy is so done with it like dude it's not weird just ASK, but what if he specifically didn't want to talk to him anymore that would be so _Awkward_ and-

reasons I have thirsted over every single buffy character at some point in my life (bearing in mind I was 11 when I started watching and 26 now so I’ve been the right age for some characters in the past but nooooot now):

buffy and spike I’m not even going to explain. those two characters, between them, are my bisexuality and my whole romantic identity. separately and together, you have no idea, but particularly together, wow. can’t get into it because this post would be 100k words.

willow - everything in season four where she and Tara were becoming friends and then friends and it was all unspoken and very breathy. dark willow in her military jacket. there weren’t that many moments when I was attracted to willow because I felt deeply that I was willow but there were some.

xander - when I was 11 I felt really bad about buffy turning him down, i felt he deserved better and she should consider him because he was funny. This is something I’ve examined and reconsidered in the last fifteen years.

giles - completely skipped over him as a teen but now, yes. i thought he was like seventy when I was a preteen but I realise the error of my ways. when he rolls his sleeves up.

angel - no one ever kissed me like that in graveyards I’ll tell you that for free.

darla - I stopped writing this post to stare into space and think about Darla’s breathy voice and the fact she woukd definitely kill me.

cordelia - I grew up in britain where there were no cheerleaders and therefore no stereotypical mean cheerleaders making barbed comments standing very close to me. I could have learned some things about myself earlier if I’d considered why that was something I wanted.

jenny - it’s the gently barbed comments about the internet with the flawless 90s hair. I had no teachers like her at the time or since.

oz - I did not give him what he deserved in the show then I started dating someone a lot like him who was just so calm, respectful, good and funny and it opened my eyes to oz. I’ve never read fanfic about oz, he’s not my type on tv, but in the real actual world oz is who I want.

faith - this is tumblr I don’t need to explain.

riley - I did like riley at the beginning of season four particularly! Not so much as a military dude but as a cute TA who has books dropped on his head. Those first few episodes were absolute gold.

anya - anya was portrayed so much as funny rather than sexy on the show but she had so much thirst potential! I don’t think this got converted into reality while I was watching it. I adored anya but more as a friend.

tara - fingers intertwining in hush? falling back on a pillow in a deeply magical way? the last bit of under your spell? anytime spells made tara fall back on a pillow or bed I was there with my urgent little preteen brain.

dawn - as a 12yo I honestly didn’t get why her dressing sexy in Him was that big of a deal because she was about the age of main cast in the first few seasons? I think because at that age she didn’t seem young and powerless to me, she was still older than me and s7 dawn was just very powerful and cool.

robin wood - again not til I rewatched as a grownup but now I have watched as a grownup I am absolutely on board with a passionate education professional with a sense of humour and a dark past. he suffers from being so directly contrasted against spike in first date but in any and all other circumstances, yes to robin wood.

characters I have never thirsted for and my provisional reasons:

the master - not a lot to get on board with here kinda just a priest in an odd outfit with fruit punch mouth.

drusilla - I love her as a character and she is very beautiful but I think she was a bit odd for me? I find her poignant and that interferes with me finding her attractive

harmony - harmony was always standing right next to people I had much stronger feelings for

joyce - I think it’s the hair. even tho I’m probably old enough now to date joyce and it not be creepy (?) the mum hair means she will always be my mum. that’s my mum right there.

most villains? - mayor, adam, glory, caleb. I know some people fancy glory and she is very beautiful but buffy was right there being powerful and blonde.

the trio - this is just not allowed, obviously. I do find tom lenk funny in the post buffy world tho. I’d get lunch with him, but that’s v different to fancying andrew.

all the potentials - eh

I've Been Hunting Slimes for the Past 300 Years and Now Ive Maxed Out My Level: incredibly long name aside, cute af slice of life that suffers Same Face Syndrome. Don't Toy With Me, Miss Nagatoro: I found out this was a webcomic first and suddenly all the HORNINESS made so much more sense. A Femdom, Degradation, Humiliation, Dacryphilia Bullies to Lovers story disguised as a high school rom-com which, I'm not going to lie, misses SKEEVY CITY by mere inches on a regular basis. However, I'm a Dom/Switch and this entire relationship sets off my dom brain center like New York City just shy of midnight. So if you're into that sort of scene, this anime is for you. If not, it's still fascinating but you're probably gonna be a little put off by how mean the Girl!Bully is to the guy MC. Unless you find out something about yourself, in which case, congrats! Stay safe, sane, consensual, and learn about the traffic light system on top of safe words, I promise you'll have a better life in general after that. Still Ongoing, currently 10/10.

Fruits Basket: IM GONNA CRY I LOVE THIS ANIME SO MUCH???? The original anime came out when I was in... I think middle school and my parents were really strict on what I watched so I never got to experience the first wave and I never bothered to watch the show ever after I moved out of the house years later. However, now that I'm much older I honestly can say this is one of my favorite anime to date, and all the characters are charming, lovable, with their own problems that I can connect to or sympathize with, and I love the MC which is always a treat tbh. Except Akito. Akito can suck a sandpaper dick. I'm only on S2 tho so no spoilers! Anime 11/10.

Monster Girl Doctor: went in thinking it was gonna be a monster girl who's a doctor with a homoerotic assistant (her name is SAPPHY okay sue me for thinking it) and ended up watching the entire dubbed harem series. Honestly, I've seen worse and this one has consistent follow-through on interesting characters and backstory enough for me to shove aside the blatant under-monstrousness of the female monsters and the harem-ness of everything else. Dubbing is honestly really good, which is a treat, and the monster designs are not the worst and the MC is tolerable. Honestly, I don't mind having watched it! The mix of cgi and the traditional animation together work pretty strangely though, and it often doesn't flow super well. 7.5/10

So I'm a Spider, So What: Dubbed version which honestly isn't that bad. Took me a bit to get into it, but after realizing that it's got a mismatched timeline a la The Witcher, it made so much more sense. Heavily done in cgi, and you can definitely tell between the 2D and 3D animations, but not the worst in the world. I went in not expecting much but it ended up being an Issekai I can stand and even enjoy. On god has a decent story... with the spider. I'd be a liar if I didnt say I skipped some of the human parts just to get back to the best part of the show. 8/10.

Somali and the Forest Spirit: I'm so fucking nostalgic for this thing it makes me want to go and hug my dad. About a human girl under threat of being eaten with a monster-dominated world. Very obvious "humans fear what they don't understand" message but instead of the humans learning tolerance it's what happens when they get annihilated first so like, kudos for the mangaka for having the guts to do that. I cried like a baby regularly. It's really good, I watched the dub and ID WATCH IT AGAIN!!! 9/10.

To Your Eternity: Oh my god. O h my g o d. Fell in love on the first episode, ngl. About if an immortal being learned how to be a person from scratch. I love it. HOWEVER. Keep a box of tissues on you at all times because you're gonna need them. I'm only on EP7 because that's all that's out right now but just know. I love it. Not for everyone but certainly for my "what do we define as human and the human condition" ass. 12/10.

Those Snow White Notes: A sports anime without any sports. About shamisen playing which is cool because I never realized how cool this instrument was??? Its neat af. OP1&2 are by Burnout Syndrom so know theyre fire. Gonna be real, its pretty alright, but not extraordinary. You can tell they were using the characters as archetypes rather than actually characters which kinda kills a lot of the emotional value you could've had, but I'm still gonna watch it. It doesn't make me cringe as hard as other sports anime tho so I consider it toptier in that regards but if you're a big sports anime fan you might be bummed out by it. Every single musical performance is INCREDIBLE tho. A solid 8/10.

Toilet Bound Hanako-kun: THE ART OMFG IT'S SO GORGEOUS. Listen, if you took coptic markers and gave them an animation budget with some manga panel direction thrown in there, that's this anime. It's beautiful. Gorgeous. I'm in love with the aesthetic every second. Story? Really good. Characters? I love the MC and his evil little twin brother asshat. Demons? Not super imaginative but I'm carrying on happy as can be anyways. Dubbing? A bit shaky at times but I found the voices charming if a little off for some of them. I'm already waiting for the second season with popcorn at the ready. 10/10.

Prison School: I watched this directly after Hanako-kun and it was like I got slapped in the face by sweaty unwashed titties and some fedora wearing schmuck's piss kink. No character is likable or redeemable. I finished it, but at what cost? 2/10 and only because a character shit his pants and I laughed.

Sleepy Princess in the Demon Castle: watched this right after Prison School and it was NECESSARY tbh. Its so CUTE and honestly, im not even kidding you, the fucking funniest anime I've seen in months. I watched the dub and the VAs are having the time of their lives working on this anime not just giving it their all but literally just going ham. Its great. If I read this im sure id be bored outta my mind but the VAs giving it a joyous performance make it an insta fave for me tbh. 9/10.

Sk8 the Infinity: i watched the dub with my bro and I can confirm that its a spectacular show because we both loved it and we have vastly different tastes. Incredibly SUSPENSFUL AND STRESSFUL for an anime about skateboarding but we finished it in a single sitting tbh. The last episode is not dubbed for some reason but we still loved it. Like if Free! was less obnoxious but the only fan-service here is Joe ♡ a beefcake who owns my lesbian heart. I think there's exactly one named female character tho and I legit couldn't tell you what it was if there was a gun to my head. So, over all, 9.5/10.

That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime: I'm going to be entirely honest, I went in thinking it was going to be a boring isekai of no value. I was right about the Isekai part. It was honestly pretty interesting and focused on nation building like you're playing civilization rather than the usual "Get Stronger" narrative or "Get Some Pussy" narrative most isekais take which is delightfully refreshing. Granted there are flavors of that in this which means it doesn't alienate the big isekai watchers out there, but it's not the whole dish and it doesn't make me want to cringe the same way others do. You've got a slime MC just vibing and building a nation of monsters nbd. Does lose points for making the female monsters more humanoid than their male counterparts but makes them back by only doing perfunctory fan-service and nothing that makes me want to cry... except the butt sumo episode but in fairness it was all a terrible dream. Literally, the MC refuses to dream anymore after that. solid animation, decent voice acting, decent story, made me realize how HUGE this is in the Light Novel community???? There's like 18 fucking novels and that's WILD. 8.5/10.

MANGA:

Spirit Photographer Saburo Kono: a one shot special by the mangaka of The Promised Neverland! Honestly a really delicate touch of both super creepy and really touching, and I'm not gonna lie I'm bummed that this isn't a bigger project but the single chapter makes it a good taste for their style. I've been wondering if I wanna read/watch The Promised Neverland and now I think I will. 10/10

Deranged Detective Ron Kamonohashi: from the mangaka of Hitman Reborn comes this Sherlock and Watson derivative! Not even 20 chapters out yet with a sort of spotty schedule, I honestly love it even thought it's exactly as you expect. HOWEVER. Kamonohashi the "Sherlock" character uses mental pressure to kill all confirmed murderers and it's up to Toto the "Watson" character to save all those people before Kamonohashi kills them! It's just recently introduced a "Moriarty" family of crime lords (not a big spoiler don't worry it was obvious) so the tension surrounding Ron's past is amping up rn. Personally, I think the art is GORGEOUS, the characters engaging, and the story quick enough to keep my interest. Most mysteries are solved within a chapter or two so you're not stuck 20 chapters into one locked room mystery which is just peachy tbh. RN, 10/10. If this gets an anime, I anticipate a legion of fangirls who ship the two main characters along with their many friends. I've been alive too long to believe otherwise.

Don't Toy with Me, Miss Nagatoro: Yeah I read the manga after I watched the show. A slower build than the anime, but it works for the format, if theyd done the same with the show then I don't think it wouldve done as well. Honestly? Cuter tbh but just as horny. You dont start really LEARNING about your character until like, chap 65 tho and no real "drama" happens until like 75. A good chunk of the chapters are like 8pgs so its a breeze to get through. I love these slow burn idiots of the century. 9.5/10 because you can DEFINITELY tell the mangaka does hentai too.

Yugen's All-Ghouls Homeroom: one-shot by the mangaka for Food Wars, it's no wonder there's this constant perviness from the MC, a guy who can see and exorcise spirits. Takes place at an all girl's finishing school with KICK ASS monsters tbh, kinda bummed its not longer. The MC? Blatant monsterfucker who is also a CONFRIMED monsterfucker???? Idk i vibe with that single emotion. Everything else is hit or miss. 7/10 for monsters and cool concept, lost points for the MC very pointedly being okay with admitting he'd wait for the teenagers to be adults tho. Creepy af. Could live without that.

Hell's Paradise: I finished the entire 127chps in 3 days and I was really enthusiastic about it 90% of the time thinking about how deep it was and then I actually thought about it and I ended up being very neutral about the whole thing tbh. The art is fantastic tho, but DEFINITELY deserving of the M rating. Tits. Tits everywhere. But not tits to be ecchi over, no, monster hermit tits on beautiful women-ish figures. Now generally I give that a pass but a huge theme in the story is that men and women are "no better than one or the other" but like, lady tits are what you see 99% of the time. Men tits are few and far between. I call bullshit on most of the "deep" themes is what I'm saying, so it's like the mangaka was trying for those deep thoughts but missed the margin a little too far for my preference. That being said, the MC is a married man who loves his wife which automatically makes him my favorite character so like... idk so many good things, so many misses, but overall really spectacular themes and imagery. Unique but classic all at once. It's getting an anime and I have NO IDEA how much censorship they're gonna be doing but they're going to be doing SO MUCH. Oh yeah, and one guy is a plant/human hybrid who fucks a 1000 year old plant-hermit which makes him a canon monster fucker. And one canon non-binary character who I, a nonbinary, actually like. So like... gosh I've got mixed feelings. 8.5/10.

Choujin X: From Sui Ishida, mangaka to the mega hit Tokyo Ghoul comes this brand new manga!... Of one chapter, lol. Not really binge-y because it's just the one chapter out right now but I'm already keeping my eye on it. The grasp on anatomy in the art is PHENOMENAL and you can see Ishida flexing his art skill which is great. Can't give a true rating but I'm giving it a tentative 9/10 because I'm excited to see more.

Shag&Scoob: technically not a manga, its an ongoing webcomic I binged an subscribed to in one day and I just think it deserves more attention. Starts off funny with "what if Scooby Doo had a gun" and has been led to "what if all cartoons are aliens that survive and receive their powers by the humans that love them in an epic war with Martians." On god, its good. I finished the current series in a couple hours so it's a breezy read, highly recommend it. 9/10.

To Your Eternity: Yeah I watched the anime and then finished all current 143 chapters in like 3 days. GOD IM WEAK. I don't buy physical manga unless I know I want to remember the story forever and I'm already budgeting for the current books out. Yeah, this is a good series. That being said, definitely not for the faint of heart or those who suffer under common triggers like suicide, molestation, death, etc. It's all framed as bad and necessary to the story don't get me wrong, but it's there and has lasting affects on the characters. Incredible story telling by the creator of A Silent Voice. Keep tissues nearby at all times. 12/10.

the good/the bad/the divisive

The good

That opening sequence: from creepy horror to high romance to gorgeous Matera to thrills and spills and gun headlights (and those motorbike stunts!), followed by Betrayal and Train (biggest gasp from my cinema companion, despite the number of cars being knocked around like Newton’s Cradle later on: Bond crossing the tracks in the train station) – this had it all, a mini Bond movie in its own right.

Lashana Lynch was brilliant and I actually think she and the film managed to carry out her character’s difficult balancing act extremely well: cool, not secretly a mole or an enemy, not a stereotype, part of the team; the appropriate combination of admiration and annoyance for Bond. That’s hard to do, especially with such a well-established character.

Ana de Armas and Craig’s chemistry went far beyond any (is there any? oh how I wish they had more, but they don’t) with Léa Seydoux – she was funny and instantaneously appealing.

Q! I know I should care more that the sexuality confirmation was of course done in the most anodyne we-need-to-sell-this-property-to-200-plus-territories way possible, but I still think it was great. (And then Bond stayed over! Hm. Hmmm.)

Felix! Bond has frend? Bond has someone he actually talks to like a normal human being? (Well, for a bit.)

Some silly gadgets and appropriately leaden quips (but not too many).

Even the critics who are not rating the film so well overall seem to feel Craig’s performance is excellent in this – and it is. He does the emotion, the hints of deep vulnerability, the action, the standing naked under an outdoor shower, and the stupid Bond one-liners. He does it all.

(trying not to attribute things to her when I of course know nothing, but surely PWB had some influence there? Hugh Dennis, not The Wrong Trousers.)

The bad

Sufin: nothing bad to say about Rami Malek’s acting and portrayal (although arguably his relationship and chemistry with Swann was more important and better than with Bond, for better or worse), but this character was a very weak Bond villain, a fact perhaps tacitly acknowledged by also including a much more highly-charged encounter with Lecter I mean Blofeld as well. Blah blah generational motivation, something about plants, wants to kill millions of people because Villain Reasons?; just not really much going on here. Also: another facial disfigurement? Really?? Yes Bond is trope-y as all hell and shouldn’t have too much regard for real-world logic, but you get up to a certain point and it’s really too much. (Cool lair tho. But more monochrome and less balls-to-the-wall than some classic Bonds.) (For me the ranking of the Craig-era films remains: Brilliant (Casino Royale and Skyfall); Servicable; some great elements (Spectre and No Time To Die); awful (Quantum of Solace), and not so coincidentally it’s Le Chiffre and Silva who really shine as villains. Villains are important!

James Bond: plot moppet edition. Much like the world of Grand Theft Auto, I don’t think children should exist in the James Bond universe.

You could definitely tell this had a few writers. I was drawn in and not bored during the whole thing, but it IS long. Too much plot and most of it not very good.

I’m not quite sure what the line is between satisfying callbacks to previous Bond films in combination with polite cribbing from all other action franchise versus feeling like a bit of everything has been thrown in without there being much that’s new, but this film probably crossed it. (Yes, Skyfall probably had more franchise callbacks, but somehow it all worked.)

The Bond-films-are-soft-power Royal Navy proper gander: one of only six missile destroyers just happening to be in the right sea, ready to go! Hm.

The divisive

I loved the ending! Bond isn’t a real person. The continuity of the series already makes no sense whatsoever if you stop to think about for more than about ten seconds. This way you can put a proper, planned end to the Craig era, emerge clean out of the knotty franchise interconnections disease caught from Marvel et al (no, we didn’t need to retroactively link the brilliant likes of Le Chiffre to a Greater Power And Agenda (Spectre), actually). And begin again.

(Also worth it for the person sitting behind me in the cinema whose clearly audible response to ‘James Bond Will Return’ was an annoyed ‘you JUST showed him getting blow up’. Can’t argue with that.)

Smokey brand Movie Reviews: Don’t Stop Me Now

This Wuha sh*t has me f*cked up but it’s been pretty legit with all the new release flicks on streaming. I’ve seen a ton of movies i missed in theaters here on my couch and it has been glorious. One i decided to skip because of all the little chil’lens was Sonic the Hedgehog. I’m a massive fan of the Sonic from way back when so i was concerned how this movie would be received, especially after that god-awful reveal initially. Dude had human teeth and it was horrifying. Paramount put it back in the cooker for a few months and popped out something a little more accurate, much to my surprise.This thing came out and blew up the theater market, also to my surprise. I couldn’t believe how accepted by the masses this thing was. Since it’s out on streaming now, i finally decided to check it out. After my first viewing, I have a few qualms but so much more to gush about.

The Good

First and foremost, thank god Paramount decided to shelve that original Sanic design. Goddamn was that hing creepy. This new one hits the sweet spot between Classic and Modern Sonic perfectly. F*cking good job.

Sonic the Hedgehog feels like an MCU Spider-Man film and i love. That opening sequence felt right in line with Tom Holland and his ridiculously lovable quips. When he hot me with that “great power” line, i almost sh*t myself.

The usage of the rings was surprisingly dope. When i saw their ability in the previews, i thought it might be stupid but, to my surprise, it was pretty interesting. No spoilers but it’s a nice plot device.

All of those game references are adorable. I mean, that Mushroom World reference, tho. Outstanding.

The contrasting themes of friendship and loneliness, while a little trite, are more than enough to give proper depth to a relatively shallow plot. There’s a ton of soul in this flick which i think is because of these particular themes and how they’re explored.

I have to say, this score is pretty legit. I thought we’d have something special with that opening Queen ballad but it just kind of kept coming with the bangers. did not expect that from a Sonic the Hedgehog adaption.

But that sound design, tho. I mean, the rings, Sonic’s spin dash, and even that little Green Hill remix; I loved al of it!

Ben Schwartz as Sonic is amazing. Dude fills those shoes perfectly. I grew up on the old cartoons with Urkel so dude had to bring the fury to impress and, boy, did he. Schwartz bring this effervescent, lovable energy to Sonic that immediately endears the blue blur to your heart.

James Marsden is quite charming as Thomas Wachowski. Dude is usually rather dry for my taste but i actually enjoy him in this. Dude has an absolutely brilliant chemistry with Schwartz and considering dude is a cartoon, that’s saying a lot. All hail Donut Lord!

Tika Sumpter was surprisingly hilarious as Maddie Wachowski, Tom’s wife. She has a very small amount of screen time but she kind of killed it when she was onscreen. I think she had potential going forward but it might be tricky giving her proper due in the future.

Jim Carrey is absolutely brilliant in his aggressive, manic, self. I miss this Carrey, that Mask/Ace Ventura Carrey. His Robtonik hits all of those nostalgia notes and i love it. I hope he returns for the sequel, if there’s a sequel. His Robotnik is mad insidious and i’d love to see what he can do in Mobius.

The Bad

Ugh. That Floss, tho. Really?

The plot to this flick is kind of generic. You’ve seen this buddy cop cartoon shtick before. Who Framed Roger Rabbit, The Iron Giant, Peter Rabbit, Bumblebee, the f*cking Smurfs; This type of flick might as will be a trope. Still, Sonic’s execution more than makes up for it’s pedestrian framing device.

The pacing of this movie is a little funky. The relationship between Tom and Sonic feels like they rushed through the necessary milestones but this movie is only a little over an hour and a half so i imagine expedience is necessary.

This is more a nitpick than anything because i actually really like this effect but the way they address Sonic’s super-speed isn’t anything new or innovative. It’s kind of just Quicksilver meets Blue Hedgehog but the way it’s executed is pretty dope.

Sonic is definitely a family film. It’s nothing heavy or super deep, but it is fun as hell. I’ve seen a lot of reviews kind of ding it because of that but i, personally, didn’t have a problem with it. Still, if you go into this looking for some super philosophical dive into the human condition or expect it to be as funny as a Chappelle standup, you’re going to be disappointed. I don’t think this is too terrible but it can be considering a limitation i guess? I dunno. I’m reaching for sh*t to dislike at this point.

The Verdict

Sonic the Hedgehog is one of the best video game adaptions i have ever to seen. I thought Detective Pikachu was the clear winner but this one gives it a real run for it’s money. It’s incredibly adorable, has fantastic performances, and genuine heart. Ben Schwartz give a life to sonic that rivals Jaleel White and i say that with all of the nostalgia i have for those old Sonic cartoons. Jim Carrey steals every scene he’s in and even James Marsden is great. Dude is usually kind of iffy in my opinion but he’s great in this. Probably all that practice with the other computer generated, anthropomorphic, animal movies he’s in. Look, i loved this movie. I absolutely did. It has it’s problems but, i mean, its f*cking Sonic and it’s good. It’s a good Sonic the hedgehog movie and that’s saying a mouthful considering the majority of the games that predate this thing. This movie is more Sonic than anything Sonic team has released in the last two decades and that;s absolutely ridiculous. I can’t wait for another one, as long as they maintain this level of quality.

This movie made me smile. Genuinely smile. I love Sonic. I’ve loved Sonic since i was a kid. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is one of my all time video games. It’s the reason i got a Genesis way back when. In a world where Bayhem corrupted my beloved Transformers and Disney dropped the ball with Star Wars, seeing Sonic done proper justice on film is absolutely blessing. If you love the Blue Blur like i do or just enjoy wholesome family entertainment, this flick is definitely for you.

Yeah its definitely one of the low pts of 3h. Al else aside, saying hey wouldnt it be cool to let them be a teacher? Oh and they can fuck their students tho is bad in concept, even if oh u cant actually romance them til post time skip UwU, cuz there r def still ppl flirtinf sith u even pretime skip. And even post time skip they really sont do enough to establish change like evryone still treats u as a superior and half od them still call u professor and shit (at least in golden deer route) AND from byleths POV its been like 5 seconds since they were all precious baby students. They trt ag the beginning to be like oh ur their age and its cas but its obvious its really not like they all look up to you for guidance n shit. The messgae of Oho theyre all grown up now ;) u can marry them is jsut not a good one. Like, some arent as bad, like mercedes is already an established stable adult but u can just tell they really didnt care abt aending any creepy messages. Idk why they didnt just ler u be a student whi gets to be the house tactician, or hell just make a student eoute and a teacher route if u want byleth to be able to marry anyone so bad

FTWD 5x02: Analysis

Hey Everyone! So who watched FTWD 5x02? I did, and enjoyed the episode. I’ll say up front that I have much less to say about this episode than I did about episode 1. This one felt more like…not exactly a filler episode. I think they’re setting up some important things. But we’re early enough in the season that it’s hard to say where these things are going. So it’s kind of a we’ll-just-have-to-wait-and-see-what-happens moment, you know?

***As always, spoilers abound below for FTWD 5x02. Don’t read until you’ve watched! You’ve been warned!***

Plot-wise, Morgan and Alicia ran into a new character. Her name is Grace (kinda want to read Christian symbolism into that name, but I won’t). She struck me as something of a Father Gabriel character. She managed nuclear power plants and, while she didn’t do anything directly to kill her people, she made questionable decisions that GOT them all killed. She seems decent and now she’s trying to make up for what she’s done by killing all the dead who are contaminated with the hazardous materials. That way, no one else contaminates themselves killing them. We also learn that she’s been exposed to the radiation in a way that means she probably doesn’t have long to live.

Meanwhile, Strand goes to find Daniel, and does so. The biggest thing to consider about Daniel is, again, that the last time we saw him, he was shot in the face. IN THE FACE, people. Also note that he doesn’t have any major, noticeable scars. @wdway looked for one. If he has one, it healed VERY well and isn’t in any particularly noticeable place.  

So, I’ve said this before, but this really isn’t about realism. More people survive head shots than the general public realizes. Are thy flukes? I suppose you could see it that way, but they’re common enough to make them…not uncommon. Is it realistic that Daniel survived? I honestly don’t know. I haven’t researched his specific wound enough to know for certain, and probably won’t. Go for it if you want. But the point is that, if the writers want a character to survive, they’ll find the science and come up with a way to make it plausible. So the argument that this is the apocalypse and Beth couldn’t have been saved simply, logically, doesn’t not hold up. Because it doesn’t matter if it’s realistic or not. It only matters if the writers want her to survive and have foreshadowed that. Which they have.

So, in terms of familiar symbols. Strand walks past a mattress billboard on his way to Daniel. It reminded me of when Negan burned TF’s mattresses in S7. Also, Daniel’s cat is named Skidmark, lol. That’s why the tape is named that. I think the last cat we saw in TWD was Jadis’s wire cat sculpture, so that may be important.

We also saw a wheel on its side. That made me happy. This was actually a car tire. The major time I remember seeing something similar was in 6x02 when the wolves attacked Alexandria. In that case, it was a bicycle tire, not a car tire, but otherwise it was exactly the same. This is another thing I’ll talk about later this week—wolf stuff—but it may play into some of our theories about the helicopter group.

We saw themes about people listening in on our group (kinda like Aaron listened to TF back in 5x10. We saw one shoe with a red shoe lace. And Luciana kept mentioning playing the accordion. So musical themes that were extremely random. There were black birds in cages and Grace wore a white radiation suit, so kind of a black and white theme.

Which leads me back to the radiation. The black and white theme (Bethyl) may mean something about this will lead to Beth. We can also tie it to the hazardous material we saw in TWD S8 when Father Gabriel lost his eye sight and Shiva died. That may have foreshadowed a larger hazardous material story line, and we’re wondering if this, in FTWD, is it.

They made a big deal about Morgan taking off his wedding ring to wash/decontaminate under it. Not sure where that’s going, but it reminded us of all the stuff with Rick’s wedding ring in previous seasons. And I couldn’t help but notice that Grace used water to decontaminate those who might have been exposed to hazardous materials. (Beth = Water.)

John and June found small cabins that were kind of like Oceanside’s dwellings. @wdway noticed a book on the shelf that said ‘Rome” on it. (Think Up the Wolves song.)

The group found some contaminated walkers who’d been burned. The problem with that is that it just released the hazardous material in the air. The people who burned them all died and Grace put them all down. She said they had accidentally killed themselves by doing something they thought would protect them. They focused on that so specifically, it felt like a theme to me, but I don’t have any idea where it might be going.

We also saw the wind knock over an antenna. So a thing where communications went down. We could tie that into the Communications theme. In fact, they’re using walkies and radios a lot in this season, and I’m sure we could read into that as well. In fact, there’s something I want to post about concerning that, but probably won’t until next week.

Morgan talked about his past to Alicia. Made an obvious reference to Eastman and his experience in 6x04. Remember, that had a lot of Beth symbolism in it.

Also, Morgan lost his signature stick. That felt important to me. It was contaminated with the hazardous material, and Grace said that, because the wood is porous, they couldn’t clean it. So I don’t know if he’ll get it back or not, but the loss of such a signature weapon for him—like Michonne’s sword or Daryl’s bow—felt significant. I kind of think he will get it back at some point, but we’ll have to wait and see.

Near the end, the mysterious group in the area—the one that’s been hanging walker heads in trees and stringing them across roads in red-rover lines—visited the truck stop where Luciana was. She didn’t see them, but heard strange noises and then when she passed out, they killed the walkers that chased her into the building and hung their heads on a billboard. Yeah, that’s not creepy or anything. Definitely intriguing, tho.

One other observation. Al went missing last episode and they didn’t find her yet. No idea when they will, but this feels a lot like 2a (search for Sophia) in that the season will be loosely structured around them searching for her, but the immediate conflicts will come from the issues they encounter along the way (like Grace, in this episode). So by extension, the search for Al is starting to feel a lot like the search for Beth. She was taken by a mysterious group. Walkers were involved. And now her group is searching for her. We saw the white and black theme here, which we also saw around Beth at Grady. So yea, I’ll definitely be keeping an eye on this moving forward.

That’s pretty much it. Like I said, lots of important things and setups here, but no major, smoking guns.
