Reigniting Old Feuds (Thranduil x poly!reader x Thorin)

This is part one of a request made by @satans-bitch.

Original request: "the reader being in a polyamorous relationship with Thranduil and Thorin but recently they have both been getting jealous of each other so the reader has to help them sort their shit out cause they keep annoying the reader with their bickering."

Y/N had grown up on tales of Dale as a small child. A magnificent city of opportunity, trade, and hope with bustling paved streets and stone watchtowers that touched the sky. The city whose rivers ran gold with wealth and no man, women, or child suffered. Until the Sack of Erebor had forced its residents to flee down the mountain to escape the jaws of the dragon as he left his hoard to feast. Since then, tales of longing had been passed down from parent to child aching for the day Dale could be reclaimed.

Unlike many of Dale’s descendants who had built a new home upon the lake, Y/N’s ancestors had fled further from the jaws of the dragon to the edge of Mirkwood. By no means a glamorous life, the small village offered safety and security away from the shadow of the mountain. Yet it was still close enough that word of Smaug’s defeat had reached the village quickly. Packing up what little supplies and labour you could spare, you’d made for your ancestral home.

While expecting the city to have been somewhat damaged from Smaug’s night raids, the corpses of orc, goblin, man, elf, and dwarf had been unexpected. Y/N  quickly came to learn the reason; the Battle of the Five Armies. So, the cleanup began, determination to see the beauty of the city restored bringing Y/N into the service of Bard the Dragonslayer, newly named king of Dale. The pairs shared goals brought a quick and easy friendship, with the King appointing them one of his advisors.

It was within this role Y/N came to know both the King of Carven Stone and the Elven-King. After their reluctant truce against their orcish enemy, it was decided in the months following the war that the three would meet in Dale to attempt to rekindle treaties of old. Under the impression it would only be the three of them meeting for the first greeting both kings were taken off guard when Bard announced another would be joining them. Yet neither king had protested once they laid eyes upon the human joining them. While Bard had initially requested your attendance as a mediator between the three, he soon noticed each king stealing glances at Y/N when he thought no one was looking. 

Outside of the trade talks each king began to seek Y/N out. The excuse of asking their opinion on Dale’s trade needs and desires was used by each king to bridge the gap and invite them to dinner. From there Y/N’s connection with each monarch flourished. Each lavished Y/N with attention and trinkets over the first fortnight of the talks. But the fixations of their rival on their new beloved did not escape either king.

Trade talks devolved into arguments and heated glares across the table despite Bard and Y/N’s placating. The King of Dale began to regret bringing Y/N into the talks despite their prowess as an advisor. While he recognised it was not their fault, Y/N had become a source of tension between Thranduil and Thorin. Y/N found themselves in a precarious situation.

While on one hand Y/N wished to step back from the talks and the kings hoping that it would calm tempers. They knew it would not be easy nor polite to ignore the requests of a king. A selfish part of Y/N didn’t want to step away either, desperate to remain as close to the pair as possible for the short amount of time they had left together before the discussion ended. There was the potential that they may never see one another again.

Yet that would not be the case. In the final days of the gathering each King made their way to Y/N to confess their feelings. The Elven King came to confess first, inviting them on a stroll under the stars. Thranduil was silver tongued, waxing together elegant declarations of admiration. While the king generally refused to speak of his first wife, Thranduil had stressed that in the centuries since her loss he had never felt so strongly for another. It was as though Y/N had hung the stars back into a sky that had been drained of all colours. If she would have him then Thranduil would be theirs for eternity. His confessions had taken the human by surprise and well assuring Thranduil she was just as interested in him Y/N had asked for time to think his proposition over.

Not to be out done Thorin appeared upon Y/N’s doorstep at first light the next day. Whisking Y/N away to his own private residence, they were greeted by an extraordinary feast upon the dining table. After breaking their fast Thorin was quick to assert the depths of his feelings, his surety that after all this time Y/N was his one, and his intentions to court them officially should they accept. Flattered Y/N had assured Thorin of their admiration for him but let slip Thranduil’s proposition from the night before. The Dwarven King’s blood boiled at the thought of the Elven scum anywhere near Y/N but honouring their request for time to mull everything over he bit back his jealousy.

After Thorin’s confession a very flustered Y/N had burst into Bard’s home seeking his counsel. Once he had been filled in on the situation by his distressed friend, the King of Dale made the decision to send out envoys to each of the Kings requesting that trade talks be paused until the situation was resolved. Over a very early pint Bard gave Y/N some much needed hard advice; they should follow their heart but keep in mind that any decision to choose one king over the other could be the spark to rekindle Dwarven/Elven feuds. A bitter tea to swallow but something Y/N knew in their heart to be true; the last few meetings had demonstrated it to no fault. While Y/N was open to the possibility of a polyamorous relationship it was doubtful that two kings, let alone two people who barely got along, would accept such a proposal. Retiring to their home for the rest of the day Y/N knew what had to be done. Each suitor would have to be notified that for the benefit of the three kingdoms Y/N could not accept either betrothal. With any luck the sting of rejection would not sour anything further.

My favourite type of fanfiction at the moment has been 'y/n is reincarnated into fandom to save the characters from canon!'. (currently mainly reading for JJK and MHA as that's what I'm obsessed with.) There's something so pure about the plot and how the author has fun with it. With scenes where yn is lowkey simping or the actual character of the fandom being dorky.

I think the appeal (besides the amazing writing and passion given into each chapter of these fanfic, rec list below) of this is how straightforward it can be. You already know the characters, you know the canon. All you learn when first reading is what ability you get and how you fit within the world. Which is usually attending the school or growing up with the character.

But mostly, what I love is seeing the butterfly effect and the new dynamics it can create. But lately, I can't help but wonder about a fanfic that has the vibe of 'careful what you wish for'. And seeing what ripples that could make. (I write mostly of JKK and MHA but these ideas could be apply to AOT or Demon Slayer or any other fandom.)

I find it hilarious if instead, the y/n is older than the main group. Imagine being the milf/dilf of MHA. Being the same age as All Might or old enough to adopt characters like Shigaraki.

Or being the in-between age of Deku and the teachers. Where your options are; hanging out with the League of Villains, working hard asf to be a top hero to be around Hawks/the plot. Or becoming a teacher/assistant to watch over class 1A to change canon. I mean, what else are you meant to do in your early twenties? You literally have to force yourself into the plot lol

Oh, you have a favourite character, like Nanami, Gojo or Choso you want to meet? Here you go, a new life as their child! (probably be a sibling for Choso lol) Oh you met you wanted to rizz them up and treat them right? Nope, sorry, you're forced to tag along and face any challenges that would come as being a child to a; Jujutsu sorcerer/ the strongest/ a half-curse spirit.

Oh, this time you specified the thought of being dating/married to Aizawa/Geto/Toji as you died? Kinda weird but here you go! Your new life as their spouse! But only, you don't gain memories from this new life, as you only remember about the canon. Don't mind the grief and odd looks the character is giving you, their amnesia darling. It's not like you can't remember the wedding you two shared. (for maximum angst, they have the kids and you're just clueless about being a parent and saving the canon. yikes)

Okay, but what if you get super lucky? You get to be with the main character and do real help! Everything is fine in JJK but Sukuna is dead set on killing you. Every chance he gets, he uses until he kills you. But it's only after he brought you back that you learn it's because he actually loves you. After all, you're the reincarnated of his reincarnated dead wife. (not confusion at all, lol) He was just pissed that you dead centuries ago and couldn't have the life you two planned. It was his way of getting even. Definitely not annoying when trying to save characters.

Okay, for real now. Everything is perfectly fine...But what's this? Yuji and Izuku are actually yandere for you? Oh, that wouldn't change canon that much, right?

So I wrote this instead of the other thing I wanted to post (as you do). Hope you enjoy!

Pairing: Thorin Oakenshield x Reader, Dwalin x Reader

Summary: You’re a falconer from the Ered Luin and like many other Dwarven women, you have more than just one suitor. This time around, you meet them at the same time which makes memories as well as emotions well up.

“Thorin.”

“What is it, Kili?”

He barely turns towards his nephew, eyes weary and tired from the road, dusk rolling in demanding the attention more than the boy.

But then he is nudged, Kili points towards the sky and his eyes follow. He picks out the shape flying circles above them immediately.

“That bird, it has been following us for a while now, do you think-”

“It’s a dark goshawk. Keep an eye out for someone following us”, he retorts, his eyes still on that bird as he squints. Yes. He has seen that bird before.

“Alright, I will”, Kili mutters, following Thorin’s gaze back up to the sky before nodding to himself again and falling behind on his pony. Thorin hears him muttering to Fili before he catches Gandalf turning his head towards the sky briefly as well.

Thorin glances back at Gandalf who absentmindedly rekindles the fire in his pipe, his eyes squinted. Then he just smiles and huffs out a first puff of smoke as his eyes fix the road again.

“What is it?”

“You should not waste your worry on that bird, Thorin. I think you already know who has spotted us.”

All Thorin can manage is a tired grumble. 

“You can never be too careful.”

You had spotted them many miles earlier than this first but it takes a second for you to register the hat, the gray robes- Gandalf. And close behind him a figure you know far more intimately.

You smile before lifting your fingers to your lips for a sharp whistle. The responding caw from the skies announces your friend before his shadows hit the ground. Your pony neighs as the bird lands on your hand, the claws digging into the glove with a creak of leather.

“Very good. Now, let’s reunite with them, hm?”

“The bird is gone,” Kili mutters left of him and as he glances at the sky, Thorin just hums in agreement.

“Mh. I think we have company, Thorin.” Gandalf’s voice cuts through his mind and as he follows the wizard’s line of sight, he almost jumps in surprise.

“Oh.”

“Who’s- is that-”, Kili squints at the figure at the horizon, just about the bend of the road in front of them.

She waves and the bird on her side caws.

“Over here, lads!”

Gandalf chuckles and briefly coughs up a stray puff of smoke, regarding Thorin with a brief look of I told you so before waving back.

Thorin suddenly feels more awake at the prospect of what, no, who lies ahead.

Just the first look at her alone takes him back.

“Thorin Oakenshield, my brother”, Dís says as she enters the room and Thorin looks up, his eyes jumping to their guest immediately.

She is beautiful, is his first thought. Behind those brown streaks of dirt and patches of grass caught in her hair with leaves scattering as she walks.

“It’s my pleasure.”

“And it’s my honor”, she retorts and he feels his heart jump, the corner of his mouth twitching with it. He lets the book in his hands fall shut and stands to offer her his hand. 

“I offered her a place to stay for a few nights, I hope you don’t mind.”

“Of course not. Feel right at home.”

Her handshake is firm, the soft looking skin on the back of her hand balanced by wilts that tell him she’s a fighter. He is barely able to glance away from her towards her sister who is already regarding him with that look.

“Thank you. I won’t stay long.”

They are tangled on the forest ground, laughing and kissing, only a week later.

“You must be exhausted, the way I could find you so easily, Thorin. Or is your age starting to catch up on you?”

“‘ibinê…”, the scolding makes her teasing grin soften to a gentle smile, missing the desired effect entirely with the way the softness in Thorin’s voice had betrayed him.

“Madtubirzul”, she purrs back and somewhere behind him, Bofur chuckles before a grumble and a hit on the head follows from, no doubt, Dwalin. “There’s a spot for a camp a mile ahead if you like.”

“I think we could all use the rest”, Thorin retorts, his hands suddenly itching to touch the skin glinting at him from underneath her cloak like molten white-gold.

“I agree, Thorin. Lead the way, lass”, Dwalin grunts and spurs his pony to ride ahead and meet her. She grins at him and fiercely returns the firm handclasp of the warrior. Dwalin lowers his voice as they talk and only a moment after they have started speaking, the bright bell of her laughter is already tolling through the forest.

“She is still quite the beauty, isn’t she”, Balin mutters and Thorin huffs out a chuckle.

“You know my opinion on this.”

“And you know my opinion of her. With Erebor in reach… You have to think about the future, Thorin.” Both of their eyes sit on Dwalin and her as they joke around. 

“Balin. Not now.”

“Do not be so irritable, Thorin”, Gandalf mutters, a chuckle following close behind as the three of them catch up to the pair. “I’m quite sure there’s no need to be jealous.”

It’s only after the camp is already set up that he manages to get to her alone. He finds her in a clearing, leaning against a large boulder as she braids a strand of her hair.

“What are you doing here, ‘ibinê?”, he mutters, his hands already reaching for her, for something of her. 

They find their way to her wrist before he tugs her closer by it. She hums and lets him do so freely, lets him bury his hands underneath the cloak and feel her warmth at her waist.

“I could ask you the same, Thorin Oakenshield. Imagine my surprise when I visited and Dís was all alone, hm?”

“She told you?”

“She only told me you were gone on a very important venture”, she retorts and one of her hands trails up from his chest to cradle his face, the thumb trailing over his cheekbone briefly. “It was not hard for me to figure out the rest with the rumors that have been going around.”

“Mh, I believe you”, he mutters and as the wind picks up, there’s a whiff of her, like apples freshly peeled and rough from knives and jagged edges with that sour-sweetness. 

It reminds him of the Ered Luin, of her, laughing on a blanket as they both try to win a card game, the pie Dís had given them long gone, Kili and Fili somewhere at the river, fooling around after having lost already.

Laughter, almost drowned out by the thick vegetation and the small river, travels over to them and she smiles again, twirling one strand of his hair around her finger.

“I see you have kept my token close”, she mumbles and he sees the way her cheeks flush as she trails one of her fingers over the braid in his hair delicately next to the strand tangled around her finger. The hair strand belonging to her is intertwined with his own, down until the end of the braid where a silver bead keeps it together.

“And you have kept mine.” He reaches for the necklace around her throat and fishes it out of her clothing to reveal the ring attached to it. “Why are you not wearing it?”

She clasps her hand around his, her eyes wide at the proposition.

“Thorin, you know I can’t.”

“Are you ever going to?”, he mutters, his forehead touching hers. Both of their eyes close and she sighs, her lips inching closer to his.

Before he gets an answer, she is already leaning towards him and engulfing his lips in a soft kiss.

He frowns but then she tugs at the braid wound around her finger and it’s like something in him tilts and falls over the edge, the fiery pit of his desire burning up and melting him. He tips his tongue into her mouth and the cold of the night melts away as their tongues meet. 

When they come up for air, he can't help but tug her closer, pressing her into himself as if he could keep some of her with him like that.

"Thorin…", she whispers and there's that glint in her eyes, mischief and ideas that have gotten him into trouble long before.

"‘ibinê…"

She chuckles and kisses him again, a quick peck to his lips as her hands wander down his broad chest.

"If you keep trying to scold me so softly I will start thinking you like me, Oakenshield." 

He lets his own hand cradle her cheek, his heart already beating wildly at the prospect of her no doubt wicked plan.

"And here I thought I had made that crystal clear already." He kisses her again, her lips giving way to him and a soft sigh escapes the air between them. “I’ve missed you.”

"Thorin… come on", she whispers and he kisses the edge of her smile before humming.

His hands trail to the brooch holding her cloak and makes quick work undoing it, easy as the snap of a finger.

“This reminds me of that fall we met.”

His fingers skim underneath the pelt collar of her coat, his rough fingertips finding skin, traced with sweat and dirt from the road, and underneath it faded black lines decorating her skin in intricate tangles and patterns. 

She hums at the contact and reaches for his clothing, too, easily stripping him of the thick coat before hesitating at his belt, her eyelids fluttering as she looks up from under her lashes. 

“I remember, too.”

Another bout of laughter reaches them and she smiles with it before reaching up and undoing the clasp of her necklace.

“You were so arrogant.”

“You liked it.”

Dark blue eyes follow the movement as she takes the intricate ring from the necklace. Before she can slip it on, however, Thorin takes it from her, his second hand already grasping her own.

He looks at her as she pushes the ring on to her finger and brings it up to kiss it, reveling in the scent of silver against skin, the low, dark blue glimmer of it looking so right on her skin.

“Thorin…”, she whispers and he smiles as her eyes lower to his lips again. She grabs his chin and tugs him back, kisses him and bites into his lip. 

He grunts and pushes at her until her back hits one of the boulders. She gasps, her hands keeping him close as he fumbles with her pants.

She mutters something but it’s swallowed by another kiss, heat shared between them as she returns the sentiment. His belt drops and he grunts as he tries to slip his fingers under the belt of her pants, between the laces holding them up but it’s fruitless. She laughs as he struggles with her pants and the frustration in him already melts at the soft, breathy sounds.

“Stop laughing-”

She keeps giggling and he can’t help but join as he backs off slightly.

“Mahal, take them off”, he urges, still laughing as she kisses his cheek and strips out of them.

As soon as she has one leg out of the pants, he crowds her against the wall again.

His hands skim over her skin, greedily touching every inch of her bare legs, fingertips stopping as he spots something new.

“You have new tattoos.”

“Mhm”, she hums, amused as he leans down, falling to his knees to trail his lips over the deep black lines on her skin. She gasps his name as he lets his teeth graze over it, too.

His hand skates up her other leg and he huffs out a laugh as he finds another surprise.

“Really?”

“Thorin, I always carry an extra knife, you should know this by now”, she mutters and he raises his brow as he looks up at her. She unsheathes the blade and lets it spin through her hand before the blunt edge meets his jugular.

Her gaze is fiery, now, as she sets one of her legs down on his shoulder. Her other hand tugs her tunic up, further, until Thorin can follow it to the apex of her thighs where she glimmers for him, already.

When he looks back up, there’s that mischievous smile again.

“Go on”, she lets the knife fall to the ground to trail the cold stone buried in the band of the ring against his cheek, the resemblance of the color of his eyes clear startling, the glint in them playful and intense like the stars in the night sky, before she buries her hand in his hair. “Show me how much you’ve missed me, madtubirzul.”

“Has anyone seen Thorin?”, Kili mutters, already frowning as he raises the second bowl of soup in his hands. “He missed supper, I can’t find him anywhere”, he adds and the rest of the company exchange looks, some questioning and confused, others knowing and cheeky.

“He’s in the woods, Kili”, Gandalf finally offers as an answer and leans back with a sigh as he glances into the direction the dwarf had vanished to quite some time ago.

“Great, then I’ll just-”

Dwalin grabs Kili by the collar before he can take another step into the direction Gandalf had just offered to him.

“Don’t go into those woods, laddie.” He tugs him back a bit further to loudly whisper the next part. “There’s wild animals there.”

Some of the company laugh again and Kili furrows his brows before looking at Dwalin again.

“Oh- OH-”

Now, everyone, including Gandalf, is laughing loudly at the young dwarf.

“Mahal, Thorin-”, the amusement in her voice has long been reduced to sharp breathlessness, cutting through the night air as she claws at his bare chest.

“What-”, he grunts and kisses her again, keeping those moans he is eliciting with every harsh thrust into her to himself; he drinks them down like ale, greedy and savoring every sound, relishing in the warmth she is making him feel.

“Thorin- I love you”, she gasps and there’s a tear, glittering like a pale gem in the moonlight, slithering down her skin. His heart burns with the prospect of it, the open words she had forbidden herself to say whenever they are not like this, all alone and wrapped up in each other, wound together tightly like the locks of their hair in Thorin’s braid.

She lets her head fall back against the soft moss of the ground, hair fanning out as she bends and twists underneath him, her eyes glossy with emotion.

“Say it again, mahal, say it again, ‘ibinê”, he groans and tugs her closer, folding himself over her, into her, her feet up to the sky as he ravages her, his mouth gliding over the expanse of her chest.

She pulls him closer and leans up on one of her elbows to whisper it into his ear.

“I love you”, she breathes and kisses his earlobe, her tongue peeking out before she follows the warmth with teeth.

He groans and kisses her again, his hand moving to where they are connected to rub at her, making her moan into him.

“Come with me, ‘ibinê”, he mutters against her lips, desperate, desperate for her and hungry for the way she claws at him as she convulses and everything gets tight, tight, tight, her grip on him breaking skin as he loses his rhythm and buries his teeth in her shoulder.

When the hold on him lessens again, he takes a first deep breath, the clear night air cradling him as he sits back with a groan.

“That’s not what I meant”, he mutters and she chuckles again, laying her arm over her eyes. 

“But you liked it.”

He hums in agreement, the joke not lost on him. He watches as she idly rubs her thumb over the silver band around her finger, her eyes peeking out from under her arm now. She caught him looking, again, no doubt. Thorin rolls his shoulder and sighs as the wind cools his bare skin, the sweat on his back

“We do not have much time, do we madtubirzul?”, she whispers and he shakes his head, his hands already reaching to set her legs back down to the ground. He rubs his hand over her skin, his eyes drinking in her nakedness. 

“Not unless you join the company.”

“Well, then.” 

She grunts as she sits up completely, her hands already reaching to fasten the knife back to her thigh before grabbing her tunic to slip it over her head.

“What’s on your mind?”

“You have more gray hair than before, Thorin”, she mutters as she combs her hands through her own hair trying to bring some semblance of order back to it. “It suits you.”

“Don’t try to brush me off like this”, he just retorts, tugging his own tunic back over his head. He keeps watching as she pulls her clothes back on, almost hasty as if she could escape this. As if she wanted to escape him.

“What’s wrong?”

She throws him his pants and he catches them, trying not to let her get away from him. Lucky for his still weak legs, she doesn’t leave, just stands in front of him and crosses her arms in front of her chest as she looks up to the stars.

“If you reclaim Erebor, the throne,” she murmurs and sighs before turning the ring on her finger. “, there will be no place for me, Thorin. We both know that.”

Their eyes meet again and Thorin pats the ground in front of him.

“Come here”, he pleads and she huffs, shaking her head before her feet carry her over to him. He grabs both of her hands and pulls her down to kneel before him, between his spread legs, his thumbs gently rubbing her skin as he kisses her cheek. “Don’t say that ever again, you hear me?” 

He lifts her hand, the one with the ring on it, until he can wrap it around the braid in his hair.

When their eyes meet again, she bites her bottom lip. 

“You think I did this without meaning it? Is that what you think?”

“That’s not what I said.”

“Then why do you not believe me?”

“Thorin, it’s a fever dream. A King can not marry a falconer.” 

“A King will marry whomever he pleases”, he grumbles and tugs her close again, his hands cradling her face. “And I will. I promised you. Have I ever broken a promise?”

She shakes her head and covers his hands with her own.

“You haven’t.”

He nods and rests his forehead against hers, a deep sigh of relief on his lips.

“I love you, ‘ibinê.”

She hums and kisses him. Under the soft touch, the tension in both of their bodies drops again.

“If you do not come back to me in one piece, I will kill you, Thorin Oakenshield.”

“Mh, I believe you”, he mutters and they kiss again but this time, a rustle in the thicket makes both of them perk up.

“Fili, Kili? Is that you?”

The sound lessens before it stops and Thorin peeks over her shoulder only to see blond hair in the thicket. 

“How did she know?”

“Shut up, Kili.”

She sighs and Thorin inwardly curses his nephews as she leans away from him.

“Is there a problem, boys?”

Thorin hastily buckles his belt again, trying not to look too obvious as the two come into sight.

“You two have missed supper and- well, we were sent to make sure you are still coming back.”

“Very funny”, she grumbles and gets up, already armed with another knife behind her back that she carefully slides back into a pocket in her pants.

“You shouldn’t surprise two armed people, you know that, right?”, she calls and Fili laughs.

“I doubt you are armed, irak' namad”, Fili retorts and Thorin laughs to himself as she tilts her head. 

“You should both know better. Now go on, give us a moment. Otherwise I’ll let you find out how many knives I can hide where you two least expect.”

“Alright, alright, but hurry!”

Thorin grabs her from behind and makes her sit in his lap, his nose finding a way through her hair to her ear.

“I should teach them a lesson for interrupting us so rudely.”

“Like you have better manners”, she whispers back. He hums and sneaks his hands underneath her tunic again, making her squeal as he tickles the skin there.

“Is that how you speak to your suitor?”, he growls and she laughs again, before turning her face towards him.

“Mh, I will talk to my suitors whichever way I desire”, she mutters and kisses him, softly, but the taunting makes him want, makes that fire inside him rekindle. “Now come on. We should get back before they all come looking for us.”

He rubs his finger over the ring on her hand, not quite ready to let go.

But when had he ever been ready to let go.

When they return to the camp, Gandalf barely glances at them but the calm amusement radiates off of him. 

“Where’d you set up your sleeping spot?”, Thorin mutters, still hovering over her shoulder like her hawk she never parts away with.

“Over there, next to Bofur and Balin.”

Dwalin is joking around with Fili and Kili somewhere leaning against the boulder near the fire, the leftover dwarves already asleep.

“Sleep by my side.”

“Thorin”, she just grunts and rolls her shoulder to collide against his chest. He stops, then, next to the fire.

She doesn’t mind him watching her as she sits down and rummages through her pack, her second glance towards the sky, before she grabs another shawl to use as a blanket, no doubt.

“‘ibinê.”

The low growl, the demanding tone of his voice makes Dwalin look up towards them, his eyes glinting across the fire.

Thorin tries not to let it stop him as he reaches out towards her but he can already hear Dwalin getting up.

Damnit.

“You got everything, lass?”

She looks up, then, over her shoulder so her eyes can flit back and forth between the two dwarves.

“I’m gonna go to my pony. I’m feeling peckish.”

“Go ahead, then.”

She doesn’t look at Thorin as she leaves towards the ponies and Dwalin sets himself between the pair like a stone wall.

Thorin curses under his breath as he faces him, the fire now burning up the side of his face. 

“You need to stop doing this.”

“Dwalin.”

“Balin is right. You should know better than to keep courting her.”

“And what, let you?”

“It would be wise to let this rest, Thorin. Concentrate on getting into Erebor, first.”

“Dwalin, she-”

“-is beautiful. Cunning. Sharp.” The older dwarf chuckles. “Thorin, she has to deny your advances.”

“Why are you getting involved?”

Dwalin sighs and clasps a hand over Thorin’s shoulder. His first instinct is to brush it off, answer with a punch- but he lets himself be led to his bedroll, across the fire again, out of the heat.

“If you manage to get Erebor, the throne, back… She has to reject a real proposal; you will not only stand there like a fool, you push her out your reach forever. You would start a war by marrying the wrong lass.” 

Footsteps, crushing leaves beneath them, make Dwalin lean in closer.

“Or you swallow the bitter pill of not calling her yours but keeping her.”

Thorin huffs, his eyes already on her again, one of the few things in his life precious, worthy of keeping and in reach for him to keep.

“I risk losing her either way.”

He watches her take her bedroll and move it further away from everyone until it is half covered by another boulder. He wants her to come back, closer to the fire.

So he knows she’s still there.

“She’s right here, lad. Keeps coming back like a street cat, too”, Dwalin responds and a light clap to his neck makes Thorin focus back on Dwalin instead of her.

“Go to sleep, Thorin. She’ll be back in your memories in the morning. You have to focus, now.”

“Dwalin…”

He grunts, not a full approval but it seems good enough for Dwalin. He gives Thorin another shove towards his bedroll. This time, he follows the motion. When his eyes fall closed minutes later, he thinks he hears her laughter again, like a haunting gust of wind.

She laughs, low in the back of her throat at the soft touch to her back.

She turns her head to glance over her other shoulder, following the alluring crinkle of paper.

Her hands smooth down the saddle again before she completely turns to face the warrior behind her.

“Still peckish, lass?”

“Where’d you get that?”

“You should know now, I always carry some of your favorite snacks.”

She snatches the bag out of his hand immediately.

“You’re greedy, ‘ibinê.”

“Don’t call me tha-”

“I know you turned him down again.”

She sighs audibly and reaches inside the bag.

“He told you?”

He reaches inside next while she is already biting into the dried meat.

“That outbreak of his told me enough”, he mutters. “You need to stop messing with Thorin.”

“I’m not messing with him”, she mutters, her tone softened by the tough meat. “If anything, he is messing with me.”

“Stop encouraging him, then.”

She glares at him but this time, she knows better than to answer.

She reaches for another piece of the dried meat, still chewing the first.

He lets her.

“Greedy.”

“I’m just enjoying the occasion.”

He hums, his free hand diving between her cloak and skin.

“What did he say about that plan of yours?”

Now he’s the one not answering. 

She hums and takes another bite, her jaw working hard while she musters Dwalin from head to toe.

“Thought so. You are the greedy ones, both of you.”

“You cannot blame us, not really.”

They had met that winter. 

She was chopping wood, driving the old axe into the logs with a ferocity that made the one underneath shatter.

“You must be at the wrong house, lassie.”

"Or you are.”

“I doubt it but if Thorin took a wife in less than a year I must congratulate him. Especially for such a fierce beauty.”

She had laughed at him, then. Axe in hand and a mountain of split wood behind her.

“A wife? I’m a guest of Dís’, no wife of anyone.”

“I highly doubt Dís would let any guest of hers chop wood, lass.”

“So you accuse me of lying?” She lets the axe rest over both her shoulders and looks at him down her nose. 

“I do no-”

“Dwalin! Stop harassing my guest!” The loud call from the doorframe makes both of them freeze in the snow. 

They exchange looks.

Dwalin gets told Thorin had long traveled to next of kin. Family matters.

He insists on staying until Thorin is back, no house should be this empty and without a man, he says.

She threatens to slap him for such an ignorant comment later, in the kitchen.

They exchange names instead. As she stokes the fire with another log, they exchange stories about their tattoos.

They trace them with their hands on each other's bodies, later, ale heavy in their breaths and warm in their bodies.

He does it again, now. His thumb pressing into a fresh bruise next to her new tattoo on her thigh. She sighs and lifts her hips again, pressing them down against his; Dwalin could go mad for those needy sounds of hers, the breathless whisper of his name as she holds onto his shoulders.

His other hand is buried deep inside her and the blush on her runs up from her chest to her face.

“Give it to me, come on, lass”, he mutters and she wants to wipe that lazy grin off of his face but he curls the tips of his fingers again.

“Dwalin-!”

“You gotta keep quiet”, he just mumbles back and watches as the relief washes over her face. When he removes his fingers from her, she barely opens her eyes, her chest rapidly rising and falling with her labored breaths.

“Make me shut up, then, Dwalin.”

“You always scream when I have you, ‘arsûna.”

She smiles lazily and lets her hand trail down over his chest.

“Someone has to feed your ego for it to be so big”, she retorts and he grumbles something into his beard, his second hand grabbing her ass. She squeaks as he pulls her closer, her breasts now squished against his chest.

“Are you saying you don’t take any pleasure from this? You want me to try harder?” 

Before she can answer, he is already lifting her on to his straining erection. She goes rigid in his embrace at the motion, her hands gripping his arms.

He groans as she helps him unravel her, her thighs shaking slightly at the stimulation following her peak so soon.

“Answer me, lass.”

She curses him instead and finally lets her weight rest on his hips again. He lifts his other hand to her chin, forcing her to look at him.

“We need to keep quiet-”

“I’ll keep you quiet.” He props up his legs behind her and starts rolling his hips up into hers. She moans, arching her back as he moves her on his lap. He leans against the rock behind him, his eyes drinking her in; writhing on his lap and only covered by the fur of his cloak barely resting on her elbows, the dark ink of her tattoos slithering around her body like shadows.

She seems ethereal to him, with her skin glinting like mithril in the moonlight.

He reaches up and lets his still slick fingers trace over her lips. Her eyes glare at him but she envelops his fingers with her tongue, licking between them, before letting him stuff her mouth full with them, giving her something to keep quiet over. When he really bucks his hip up into hers, she bites down on them.

It had been almost like this, the first time.

Vicious, proud, both of them- it mixes into an explosive kind of fucking.

The softness always comes with an edge.

He had a scar from where he had tumbled a little too close to the oven.

Another from when both Thorin and he found out they had shared her over a year long between them without ever knowing.

Thorin openly stares at Dwalin across the fire crackling, the rest of the company already asleep.

They exchange measuring looks and Dwalin takes his hands out of her hair after making sure she is fully asleep.

When he looks back, Thorin has crossed his arms over his chest.

It looked like he would have to start to come to terms with sharing.
