ways to make duolingo useful
1. jump units
in the new "tree" all the new vocabulary is in the first lesson, then duolingo makes you study it for like a week if you're lucky, so if you're confident you've learnt all the new words just jump to the next unit (I also find myself remembering my mistakes better if I make them while trying to jump than when I make them in regular lessons)
❗after jumping always come back to the stories you missed, they're like the most useful thing there is in the app
2. use other resources
I know this is a post about duolingo, but people, mostly beginners, seem to think that they only need duolingo to become fluent. my mom has a 700 days strike and she still can't keep a simple conversation in english or understand an episode of fucking teletubbies, that should tell you everything. read content for beginners, watch youtube videos, tv-shows, use other apps, I promise the owl won't kill you for it
3. stop when it starts slowing you down
trust me you don't need to use duolingo when you're intermediate, it's just not worth it. leave it for the days you can't study properly and want to do at least something

Personal rambling: Small life achievements and embracing what makes life worth to you
2024 accomplishments? I finally completed the lacks on my Fairy Tail collection and I now have a pretty home for it✨"But Siren, isn't it as simple as going to the store and buying it?" NO, I almost gave up one of the things that makes me happiest in the world and I wanna vent, sorry

Last year I decided to sell most of my manga collection, including Fairy Tail. But since it used to be my favorite during my early teen days, I choose to read it one last time - and the result, well, I think you can guess xD (my sincere apologies to the buyer that had his order cancelled).
And it may sound silly, but realizing that I still love FT after all those years and despite it's flaws was a giant turning point in my life because, until now, I hadn't realized that I abandoned my passions to live someone else's truth.
I lost my teen years to depression (mostly due to bullyng). I heard so many terrible things about my personality and appearance and I became so insecure about everything that I liked, that I tried to distance myself from the person I was as much as possible. I lost joy in reading, drawing and even listening to music. But eventually, things changed and I found myself on a gentler place - I graduated, found people I care abt and life become peaceful, so I thought I was happy.
I didn't realize that I had been living like a zombie until now.
Last year I engaged on reading again and it was the first time in almost 8 years that I truly felt alive and excited again. There's so many things I want to do and draw that I can barely find time to eat - and it's a pleasure. For someone that used to wake up wishing they didn't, can you see how much that means?
Some may not understand how small things can have such a big impact in one's life, but I do love stories since I realized I was a conscious being (judging by my first drawings, I was 2 xD). My earliest memories are my father reading for me and daydreaming about videogame characters. I say without doubt that, along with nature and my loved ones, NOTHING makes me happier than art. But being yourself is not always an easy task, because insults don't usually stop at "you're stupid", they turn into "you're a freak and a harm to the world for being the way you are". And well, it's hard to not worry you might actually be a terrible person. It took me a while to see most of those opinions are not based on rational thinking, so trying to argue is a lost battle. Some people will always be rude, and it's not our fault. But I'm now at peace believing I will always be a better person minding my own business and being happy with silly things than spreading hate and bigotry.
It may sound creepy, but having flirted with death for long made me see life in a lighter way cuz, if I'm going to die anyway, then I lose nothing spending my time doing what brings me joy.
So idk if this loong rant makes any sense, but I wanted to share it because I can't stop thinking about how close I was to erasing something that is such a big part of my joy in life just because I was scared of facing my fear of judgement. In the end, it's not only about FT.
And if someone is going through a similar thing, I hope this can be a reminder things can get better, I promise. Please remember time is too precious to waste with stupid people. There's work to do. And pets to feed. And cool arts to see. And cute bugs to gently guide out of your home when they get stuck. 🌱🐞
#Fairy tail#happy new year :)#personal#venting#sorry this is probably very badly written#I'm already bad at expressing myself on my native language so english is even worse#On a lighter note#since I missed out on the official release here in Brazil part of my collection is now secondhand#since it was my only resource to complete it#as they are not being printed anymore#It's sad to see how poorly some of them were being treated by their former owners#while others had clearly never been opened before since they still had their pages glued from printing#but the good part is that I'm learning a lot about book restoration heh#If you know any tips I would be happy to hear! ✨

OK so, I actually taught myself English super young, thanks to basically living in English- speaking fandom spaces 24/7 (had no real friends outside of that, yikes).
Now I'm diving into a third language, and being in a non-English speaking country i get asked a lot about how i learned.
Here's my trick : Think in the language you're tackling.
Have your daily Inner monologues in that language instead of your mother tongue. But the secret sauce? Substitute words you don't know with English words or just make up nonsense that sounds like it could be from that language. Over time, as your brain learns new words it catches on, tosses the nonsense and replaces it with actual vocabulary, and suddenly, you're fluent. 🌟
No clue if there's any science behind this method, but it works for me. Language learning is personal and different methods click for different people but i hope this helps someone.
#I actually have many more tips but tbose are just the generic ones you usually get#Like watching movies or listening to music in that language#or downloading an app that nags you to practise for 5 mins a day (it adds up trust me)#But yeah this is my number one tip and i don't see it mentioned usually#languages#learning japanese#learning english#learning a new language

I will not stop talking about my meds. I got home yesterday with the intent to clean my guinea pig's cage and I actually did it. I washed and cut my hair after that and didn't feel like I wasted my evening. I need to make phone calls today and the dread of not knowing how long it's gonna take isn't hanging over me bc frankly it feels like time has slowed down. I'm actually cooking breakfast with what handful of groceries I have left and then I'm gonna buy more and actually plan a few meals. Life could be a dream
#i am at what i am led to believe is a normal person baseline. and i have coped for so long to achieve while not there.#i think i could learn a new language in the span of a month with how i've been feeling lately#literally the only downside so far is that i've been thirsty as hell but that's probably good for my POTS so??#have also been noticing when i'm hungry and have actually been eating more; i'm getting breakfast every day!!#i was doing that before but i've actually been keeping it up for a week or 2 now!!#gonna try to start adding in some exercise to help my joints; got a 3 pound weight at work bc It Was Right There#and wanna try doing planks again; saw a tip from someone's dentist about flossing that was like#pick one day of the week to do it and try to do it on that day every time; then pick a 2nd day to do it#and i think i wanna go that route; might open comms bc i feel like i can physically keep up with them now#we're gonna have to fucking SMITE me at this point to get me to stop#shai speaks

My style of using flashcards ( ̄▽ ̄)

Yippee!
I've been using flashcards since elementary school and this is my favorite way of using them. I'll use Korean words to showcase my method.
Usually I'll have a main side and secondary side. I'll write the main side in large letters and use a fun color and the secondary one with black pen. Here I used green to contrast the black. Idk colors motivate me...
I'll have a few words from different categories every time.

Here's what I mean: a few categories with similar-sounding words and one with random words. I never exclusively do similar-sounding words as I remember better when there are only a few similar ones.

The secondary side has two definitions, usually either two writing systems or two languages (polyglot tingz) so I get as much out of these cards as I can. In this case, there's hanja and English!
I'll flip through a pack like this for a few days, usually 2-3. Then I'll make another one!
I'll take the pack out again in a month and if I don't remember a word, I'll add the word to my current pack! If old cards keep coming back, I'll stop making new ones and study the old ones until I remember.

Im late but happy first Sunday of the year! I went running around the city yesterday with a friend to a bunch of independent bookstores to promote said friend’s new book that’s coming out. Was a really fun way to find new bookstores around the city and get out of the apartment for the day! Definitely have several on my list to visit again and spend more time browsing. Sending good thoughts and vibes your way and wishing you a gentle week ahead - SMA
happy SECOND monday i am eternally late but thank you very much!!
is this friend’s book mayhaps one i can get my hands on across the ocean? 👀 or is there a local bookstore i can help preorder from and send to somebody you know / who wants it just to support? (pls let me know)
i am having a gentle time of it lately bc i am learning to knit and playing a lot of good video games and also have decided i am going to grow my best approximation of a miniature garden on my balcony this year so i am actually feeling quite good about things in general
i wish you a very good week ahead and may i recommend you make a broccoli cheddar soup topped with little bacon crumbles served with half a toasted baguette
#am also learning a new language! and local foraging tips! and getting new tattoos!#i have No Dollars currently but after january payday i truly will be doing Well and that is something i feel really full and warm about#i spent most of my younger years feeling distinctly Not Good and it is wild to see where the life of the late twenties takes a gal truly#answered#anonymous#sma

one thing about the (now over) tiktok ban and everything that's going on with red note is that im now intensely interested in non english circles of social media, as well as just non english social media in general, because all of my social media interactions are incredibly english focused (mainly america, with some australia). like yeah its just the way the cookie crumbles when you only speak english but i also really like the cultural differences in online communities (its one of the best parts of the internet!!) and so its really fun to research abt

Expat Sacrifice
Photo by Dannyluo Expat life, Expat Living, although full of fun, adventure, love and maybe even money, comes with sacrifice. Once living and working abroad, you will have friends and family congratulating you on your move and even some who will be more focused on the crazy money you must be earning. Isn’t it funny how the apparent crazy money is why third-world immigrants flock to the shores of…
