He was not surprised, but still, he was curious. And more than that, he never would have kept this from his mother if he had ever gotten a threat against her so carefully delivered to him. Why did she keep this from him? “Why didn’t you tell me?”

He stepped past Ronan and into the bedroom. “What more do you need?” “There’s gotta be a king in here somewhere.” “Lynch.” “I’m gonna find the king.”

This Feeling

Matthew knew he had no one to care but when Kavinsky’s friends all left their small town to chase college dreams, leaving Kavinsky behind, he was an ever-present facet of the Lynch household. He basically moved in and Matthew couldn’t be any happier, even if Declan was furious. It was summer, and Matthew was excited to finally shoot his shot. He was sixteen now and Kavinsky was turning nineteen in a week. He could finally show Kavinsky he would root for him, maybe help him get his GED. He believed in Kavinsky, where no one else did. He saw Kavinsky the way no one else could.

He wouldn’t give up on him.

If the ecstasy wasn’t still dissolving on his tongue, Joseph Kavinsky would have thought Ronan Lynch was part of his trip. He adjusted his Pit Vipers to get a better look at him as Ronan stalked across the Agloinby parking lot in his tattered uniform, incriminating himself with the way he kept glancing over his shoulder.

“Lynch,” he called through the cracked window of the Evo.

He watched Ronan freeze and smiled something dirty. He liked calling Ronan by his last name, he liked the way it wrung his tongue.

“Get in the car,” he said as the sky started going dark, framing Ronan in shadow that contoured his already sharp features.

Ronan turned, his eyes murderous. “I have class.”

“So do I,” Kavinsky replied. Fireworks started to fizz in the sky, occasionally vanishing to rain, then bright sun again. He stopped trying to tabulate what was real.

He saw Ronan hesitate, almost decide to follow orders. He could see the want in him, the knowing.

“Lynch,” he said again.

“Fuck off.”

Too much. Ronan bristled and wheeled back toward the school.

Before they had kissed, Ronan never really pictured Adam in the kitchen like he was now. He had tried not to think of him at all, ultimately a useless exercise, but sometimes his mind would betray him with tantalizing thoughts of Adam laughing beside him in the car as they raced against faceless adversaries, Adam panting in his neck with his knobby hand around Ronan, Adam eating cherry tomatoes in the bright heat of summer until the seeds spilled from the corner of his mouth.

Now Ronan thought he would do anything to keep Adam here, settled into the roots of his family home where he blended into the muted colors of the kitchen like he belonged.

He watched Adam work methodically at the island. He was mixing together some blend of ingredients with a scent that wafted as sweet as the late morning sun through the lace curtains. There was powdered sugar on his face, ghost-like and faint. Adam bit his lip as he concentrated, and Ronan felt all over again the phantom press of Adam’s teeth on his neck.
