Athos takes up the Comte title again and donates his a large majority of yearly earnings to good causes and the rest of the nobility is mad because he has a beautiful and intelligent wife and a crop of adorable children.

I am a liar - I never finished the Musketeers/Where the Red Fern Grows AU. BUT! I found what I did write of it. behold the following snippets. I am cursed with an inability to create a plot and or string scenes together in any sort of way. also, please know, it is important for this to be known, that the dogs are all buried wrapped in musketeer cloaks.

"Aramis?" d'Artangan whispered. He reached out with shaking fingers - his dog's coat was damp and warm. In the dark of the moon's shadow the blood looked almost silver.

Aramis whined and twisted his head weakly to lick at d'Artangan's hands. d'Artangan soothed Aramis with a murmur.

Porthos won't come into the house.

"It's not going to work," His father finally says. d'Artangan has been pleading to Porthos from the doorway, crouched down to the dog's level with a cut of dried meat, but to no avail. Porthos whines and paces, tail flicking irritably, but not taking a step closer to the door.

"What's wrong with him?" d'Artangan asks, voice cracking. He rubs his eyes to ease away the burn of tears behind them.

"He's heartsick, son." His father takes the dried meat and splits it, tossing half to Porthos and dropping the other half for Athos. "They're dogs but they are still creatures of God, they still feel loss."

Athos nudges d'Artangan's hand and d'Artangan pets him. It's as much of a comfort for himself as the dog.

Porthos, as bad as his injuries were, healed well. There were reminders of that night of course, a few new scars cut through his fur and he was short half an ear, but nothing mortal.

Athos aged. Whether it was from Aramis's death or the toll of his injuries, it could not be said. But the hound moved slowly and slept often.

"Com'on." d'Artangan called, making every effort to keep his voice even and easy, like this once had been. "Porthos, Athos!"

"They are-" d'Artangan wiped angrily at his eyes. "They /were/ my dogs." Why had they done it? Why had they all come into his life only to leave again? They had made a space for themselves that wasn't there before and now it was empty. d'Artangan felt as though he himself would die from the hollowness of it all.

The musketeer clapped a comforting hand on his shoulder. "True friends are rare enough," He said. "Those lucky enough to have them rarely care about the form they appear in."

"They saved my life." d'Artangan heard himself say. "I would be dead, ten times over, if it wasn't for them…"
