So, now we "know" that a lyctor (without wanting and unaware) takes something something from their cavalier's soul, so please help me with this TLT fandom;

G1deon - Was it Pyrrha´s attraction that drove him to Wake?

Augustine gilding stuff by hand, sure, why not. But he's very elegant normally, and this does border on tackiness.

You know who was artistically Inclined? You know who made art representing his lost loved ones? You know who hails from the Third House, known as the House of the Shining Dead? Whose icon is a skull with bejewelled eyes?

Cyrus the First, and his cavalier Valancy Trinit.

I think they might have started that tradition, with Augustine taking over after he died.

Thinking about Ianthe's arm:

"He says it’s hideous and he’ll gild it for me—” (“Tacky,” you said.)"

Gold isn't something you can manipulate with necromantic ability. But here's Augustine casually offering to gild the bones of an entire skeleton arm, which sounds like it would be quite laborious manually.

But of course, what is the Mithraeum filled with?

Things like this:

"a skeletal arm wrapped in gold foil, amethysts studded like so many eyes between the knucklebones"

and this:

"gilded and bejewelled skeletons of Third and Seventh heroes dressed in gold and green robes of necromantic office, with amethysts and topazes and emeralds for eyes"

You have to assume that the Lyctors in general, or Augustine in particular, have been DIYing the bejeweled House hero relics for the last myriad, so adding some gold to an arm that's attached to someone isn't all that much of a stretch.

This is also riffing on an actual thing in Catholicism, so if you're trying to imagine the Mithraeum, I promise you that you are not visualising something as weird and tacky as reality...

not a top 5, but just 5 that come to mind first, in no particular order. i'm posting this on mobile which was been doin some weird things w links recently so i HOPE. the links work out ok.

hold you like a weapon by @gideonisms (40k, modern AU Gideon and Harrow dance together at the 9th house ballet and fitness. Gideon is roped into a couples dance competition with Harrow, and shenanigans ensue. SO WELL WRITTEN i love this fic deeply. some amazing art for this recently also by @iceboxhag i HIGHLY recomend checking out. 18+)

til the cows come home by varygud (10k, postcanon, Alecto has revived the cowwall cows and Gideon and Harrow are tasked with their care. Tender, heartbreaking and healing, deeply funny and extremely well written. made me cry positive. T)

the world hit her like a fall by @a-big-apple (8k. I think about this fic ALL THE TIME.... Modern figure skating AU with a HtN style twist. told across multiple time points, through multiple POVs. incredibly lovely fic. T)

waiting and better days by badgerjaw (9k. LOVELY fic. made me cry positive. Modern AU sickfic which I usually do not go for but TRUST ME on this one. it's good and sweet and lovely. T)

train up a swordsman / to stab you in the back by @nose-coffee (94k. GIDEON THE SEVENTH AU... aka what if Gideon was the 7th house cavalier. Excellent character voices, some of my favorite in text meme references etc, very interesting plot and some FUN twists along the way. M)

I have thought about this a lot! We don't know quite what Augustine or G1deon might have thought about it, but Mercy and Cytherea were not exactly happy. I suspect Jod said he wanted to do it, or it was suggested only semi-seriously by a lyctor, and everyone else felt uncomfortable and might have been vaguely reassured by the idea that the postulants would be free to choose to ascend.

The interesting thing is, barely none of the lyctors freely chose it. After having lived for a couple centuries, it took the joint suicide of Cristabel and Alfred to pressure Augustine and Mercy into it. It's hinted that G1deon and Pyrrha only did it because they were either under attack by the RBs or possibly when Alecto threw her first “tantrum”. Cytherea was going to die otherwise, and it's very likely Loveday insisted thinking it would save her. We have no idea what happened with Cassiopeia, Cyrus and Ulysses—perhaps they were also under pressure to get ready for the RBs, if Alecto called them—but so far we don't know of any originals who were thrilled about it.

And Tamsyn confirmed only Ianthe would have actually gone through with it. Indoctrinated as everyone else was, nobody was that thrilled.

So I'm just not really sure what Jod was thinking. Tbh, that entire plot point has always felt more like something the novels needed as a reason to kick off the plot than something that fits Jod and the other lyctors.

But also, uh… Canaan was designed as a puzzle. Someone (everyone, supposedly) set up the studies and trials (over 9,000 years ago?), deliberately for future aspirants to try and figure out lyctorhood. So… dunno!

The Emperor calls now for postulants to the position of Lyctor […] those lonely Guard remaining petition for their numbers to be renewed and their Lord above Lords to find eight new liegemen.

when I first read Gideon the Ninth, I thought this made perfect sense. “IDK what a Lyctor is,” I thought, “but I bet it’s hard. Of course they’d want some help!”

But now in retrospect? Knowing that there’s absolutely no way in hell Augustine or Mercy or G1deon or Cytherea would have ever asked John to make more Lyctors, not in ten thousand thousand myriads? It’s such a stunning example of John’s duplicity and manipulation. It wouldn’t have raised any eyebrows if the letter only mentioned John’s desire for more lyctors, since he is, after all, God. It’s purely decorative.
