It's warm when you wake.

The kind of warmth that jellies your bones, caresses your face, whispers in your ear, just five more minutes, please.

Your head is buzzing.

Something smells delightfully pleasant and you burrow further into the cocoon of blankets you're swathed with.

Niggling in the back of your head is a feeling that something has changed.

Legs stretched out, you flutter your fingers and wiggle your toes. Everything accounted for.

So what's missing?

Opening your eyes, you come face-to-face with fire. You bolt up right, eyes wide. The flames that flickered atop the candles in your room were minute, incomparable to the inferno blazing in a crevice in the wall.

You watch, entranced, and the flames never once dare to creep outward. They stay inside the strange crevice, frolicking and dancing about. The perfume of burning wood and the comfort of the warmth set aflame to your heart and you came to love the fire. It's so strong, so powerful, but never dares overstep.

“—but Kaname, she's just a little girl!”

There he is, once again looming in a doorway.

Your angel.

By his side is a man of flaxen hair and jeweled eyes. He’s balancing three beautiful cups on a tray. They exchange a look, and then Kaname is on one knee by your side.

“You're finally awake. How are you feeling?”

The lush warmth in his voice has your lashes fluttering, and you whisper that you're fine with your eyes steadfast on the tips of your fingers as they twirl anxiously.

Kaname takes your hand. It kind of feels like fire.

You fall in love with the feeling.

“I know this is a lot for you to process. We've stolen you from everything you've ever known. You must be so frightened.”

Is that what the buzzing in your head was?

You couldn't name the emotions but you could feel them bubble within, stomach roiling as your mind raced further ahead than you could see.

The stranger sets the tray down by Kaname's side, stepping into your field of view. The scent of old books and something crisp follows him. He smiles kindly at you but his eyes were sad.

Why do they both have sad eyes when they look at you? Just like the Lady sometimes did.

“I want you to meet a friend of mine. This is Takuma Ichijou.”

“It's an honour to meet you, Berlin. I helped Kaname find you. You gave us quite a fright when you passed out.”

You lose the tail end of Takuma's greeting, hooked on the unfamiliar word.

“Berlin?”

The men looked at each other.

Takuma's tone is laced with hesitance as he asks, “That's your name, isn't it?”

Your breath catches in your throat. Your body jerks. Kaname's grasp becomes loose, but still gentle.

“I am just ‘girl’.” you whisper.

A name is a concept you'd daydreamed about. All the characters in your books had names. People with names had fantastic adventures.

Warm fingers wrap around your shaking hand and you make the mistake of meeting his eyes. It feels like he was looking through your skin, seeing parts of yourself you'd long since buried.

“You had a name, once. One given to you by your parents: Berlin. Those people tried to strip you of your identity, your legacy.” Laden with compassion, Kaname's voice was warm. You want to wrap yourself with his honey words and fall back asleep, but he says, “Those men are gone, now. You don't have to be The Girl in The Room anymore.”

You're not sure you know how to be anything else.

At some point, Takuma must have removed a cup from the tray because one of them sits cradled within his long fingers, you realise.

“You're not doing it alone,” he assures you. “We'll help you, along with everybody else. Anything you need, just say the word.”

You don't know how to need things.

Kaname moves, drawing your eyes once again. He, too, takes a cup. His thin, beautiful fingers curl around the golden handle, and gently, he urges it against your small palms. It's warm. It's heavy, too, when he takes his hands away. The liquid inside is a soft brown, almost orange.

“We'll start small. This is Egyptian chamomile, a tea brewed by steeping white chamomile flowers.” Kaname tells you, the warmth of his hands replaced with the drink. “Why don't you try it?”

You stare down at the cup, struck with the urge to press your face against it, to feel the warmth against your cheeks. In your peripheral, Takuma moves. You watch him bring his own cup to his mouth, the way he tilts it just so, the liquid spilling into his mouth. It's so graceful.

You copy his movements.

Tea wasn't an unfamiliar concept to you, but it was again, something that only existed in the books you'd read. The books hadn't prepared you for how sweet it tasted, floral on your tongue, dragging free the breath you hadn't realised you'd been holding.

“Good,” Kaname praised so sweetly it took all your effort to hold yourself together. “Once you finish, I'll call the girls to give you a bath. We have a meeting with the Headmaster tonight.”

‘Again.’

‘Come on!’ Emmie whined, lowering her hands from guarding her face and pouting at Samson. ‘It was perfect that time.’

‘Once,’ he countered, his own hands still bobbing by his face, his knees bent and his motion the perfect replica of what Finn had been showing them during lesson. If she was being completely honest, there was something almost soothing about the fact that Samson seemed to recall all the information after such a short lesson. But there was also something mildly concerning about it. ‘It needs to be perfect every time.’

‘You sound like my father.’

‘Good.’ Samson’s voice brokered no room for argument.

With a sigh, Emmie raised her fists. She danced back a step when Samson moved forwards, and ducked aside before he could counter. ‘Don’t you ever wonder about all this?’

‘Not really,’ he admitted, stepping back to reassess her position. ‘We’ve seen what those monsters can do. Why risk it?’

Emmie shrugged, though inside she couldn’t help but wonder if perhaps the monsters they faced weren’t as varied as they were. Even dogs had different temperaments, other animals, and they weren’t always considered as dangerous as some of the supposed monsters they faced.

‘Emmie,’ Samson said softly, and she heard the vague concern there, the worry that she might just be going soft on him.

She shot him a winning smile and aimed a punch for his arm. He moved away, but she’d been expecting it. Without so much a taking a breath she hit him lightly against the stomach, the contact enough to force his attention down. When he looked back up at her, she spotted the surprise in his eyes.

‘Not just a pretty face,’ she teased, smirking as she pulled her hand away. ‘Point is mine.’

‘This time,’ he said, the challenge in his voice obvious.

Emmie grinned before resetting her own stance. She just hoped she might be able to make him forget the concern so he didn’t take it any further than the training room.

He's like a dream when he enters your room.

It's late. The Lady put you down for bed over an hour ago. You haven't been able to sleep, though. There's a strange tension in the air, as though the walls themselves are whispering. You tried telling the Lady but she'd dismissed your concerns with a stern “Growing girls need their sleep.”

Couldn't she couldn't feel it coming? The atmosphere was heavy, thick enough you could taste the incoming storm on your tongue. Having lived in the room all your life, you had no frame of reference for the feeling. You couldn't conceptualize the fear that locked your joints, choked the air in your lungs.

Until it's gone.

He's like a dream. Draped in white, his silhouette is golden from the light spilling into your darkened room. The terror was suddenly vacant from the room, as though his aura brought you back down to the ground.

“Who are you?” You ask him, your voice quivering.

The light turns on and you gasp for you realise this man is to be beheld. His eyes meet yours, russet pools of incomprehensible sorrow as he reaches his hand to you.

“My name is Kaname Kuran,” he tells you, his voice soft. “I'm here to rescue you.”

Extended hands have always resulted in things being taken from you. Never have you seen a hand reached in kindness.

“From what?” Shifting forward to take his hand, you felt golden rays of hope.

Your hand is so small in his.

“Those men. They take your blood, don't they?” 

Your body locks up. Eyes widen to the size of baby worlds.

“They need it,” you reassure him. “They're sick.”

He kneels down so that he's eye level with you, expression pinched, and so sad.

“No. They're not sick. You have very special blood, and they've been stealing it from you.”

Something inside your gut twists violently. His voice is silken in its sincerity. In the back of your mind, a voice whispered that you always knew something wasn't right. 

“You don't know how special you are, do you? You should be living like a princess, learning to harness your powers.”

Tipping forward, you reach for him, and he reaches for you. You're swept into his arms and taken away from your windowless cage. Nobody stops you. You fall asleep to the feeling of his fingers in your hair.

i've been watching a lot of the blacklist lately and the powerful caregiver has always been a big trope for me. i thought berlin would benefit a lot from that kind of dynamic.

i chose kaname because i thought he fit the profile perfectly. i never used to be a fan of the guy — in high school i actually started a kaname hate club lmao — but i rewatched it last year, and finally finished the manga + sequel and finally saw his charm.

i also chose him bc i know berlin has a fantasy abt fucking over a powerful man and old habits die hard lol

Bennett exhaled slowly, his attention out across the school grounds. Everything felt too quiet without Em around, without her exuberance filling practically every space. It felt like everywhere held a memory of her for him. Every corner succeeding in breaking his heart because they wouldn’t make more memories. School had been their home for so long, and yet now it felt like an empty shell of the place it had once been.

‘Moping really doesn’t suit you,’ Nevaeh said softly, startling Bennett’s attention her way. Somehow she’d managed to sneak up on him, found herself leaning against the railing beside him. Her attention strayed across the grounds too, and he knew she was probably plagued by some of the same memories as he was.

‘Good to see you too, Neve,’ he replied, forcing his attention to the school building, turning his back on the greenery that only seemed to be clouded now.

‘I’m serious, Ben,’ she said, moving to copy his stance, ‘this isn’t healthy.’

‘I know. I just...’ Bennett ran a weary hand across his face. ‘It’s hard.’

‘I get that,’ she murmured, giving his free hand a squeeze.

Where those words might have sounded insincere from some people, from Nevaeh Bennett knew they were more than that. She might not have lost her twin, but the fear of it was real. He knew he probably should have spoken to his father about it as well – he’d not only lost his daughter, but Bennett’s uncle Eoghan was still missing, his father’s younger brother. And yet Bennett couldn’t.

‘But Em wouldn’t want this,’ Nevaeh reminded him softly.

Bennett sucked in a deep breath, released it slowly as he tried to keep the burning tears back. His grief was one of those things he couldn’t escape, and yet he knew his friend to be right. Emersyn would have been so disappointed that he wasn’t managing to smile, to laugh at the memories losing her had stirred up for him. That he’d let the darkness taint them instead of keeping her memory alive.

‘I’ll be all right,’ he assured Nevaeh softly, really hoping it was the truth. If not just for him, but for Emersyn’s memory.

Alexander Anderson x f! Reader | 1,5k. words | no warnings | not proofread

lmaoo I just needed to drabble this, but I made her a tiny bit more assertive can't be worse than the canon comedic moments

"Wait, Anderson! Your presence is enough!" Maxwell tries appealing to the paladin's common sense, but to no avail. He simply loses control at the sight of his mortal foe whenever those two clash.

The same goes for the head of the Hellsing Organization, only able to watch as both Alucard and Anderson draw their weapons, their manic laughter filling the Imperial War Museum.

As both masters were unable to keep those two behemoths from their imminent confrontation, suddenly a third party emerges from the shadows of a nearby hallway.

"Stop this at once!" you scream at the top of your lungs, standing in between the no-life-king and the holy knight. Disregarding the former, you turn towards Anderson, a warning finger poking his chest. "What in the Lord's name do you think you're doing?!"

The man immediately pulls you into his arms, your much smaller form almost disappearing under his overcoat. "And whit aboot ye? Reckless thing, dae ye hae a deathwish?"

Anderson glares over to his opponent, well aware he cannot fight while keeping you safe at the same time. "Huh?" You point over your shoulder to the vampire that was already lowering his weapons, observing you with an intent fascination. "What satisfaction would it bring to shoot an unarmed woman?"

It might sound naive, but as your sworn worthy enemies, they surely had the same sense of honor that was driving Iscariot as well. "This is no place to fight" you reprimand both of them, "There's civilians here!"

"We're oan protestant groond, I coidnae care less abo-" He's cut off by your angered expression, the imposing man rendered speechless just like that. "...fine" he sighs in defeat, "Wud be a waste destroyin' this braw art, ah guess."

Eventually he puts the bayonets away, turning to Alucard with a sombre look. "But this isnae ower yet. Consider it a delay o' yer fate."

Maxwell tries to take over the conversation again, still sweating bullets from the tension as he addresses Sir Hellsing. "Seems we both have troublesome subordinates, right?"

You loudly interrupt him, much to the amusement of the British attendees. "You're one to talk! You're not an ounce better!" Being irritated enough that he'd bring Anderson here for such trivialities, you pinch his ear like he was some kind of unruly child - well, to your defense, you practically raised him. "Calling this lady such filthy names...you better apologize!"

"Y-Yes, ma'am..." You nod along with a pleased smile as Enrico uttered some half-hearted excuse to the woman and her squad, then dropping a curtsey yourself. "I too have to apologize, on behalf of the bishop and my husband."

Great. Now his weakness has been exposed, and so casually at that. Anderson doesn't expect them to use you against him, they're different from the disgraceful vermin he usually fights after all. But still...

Everyone's face drops at your subtle disclosure. While Integra's face contorts in disgust more than anything, her hitman breaks out in boisterous laughter. A shiteating grin decorates his face as he sneers "Oh, it warms this cold, dead heart of mine to learn that you're just as much of a hypocryte as the rest of the Vatican, Father Anderson."

God's assassin bares his teeth, protectively wrapping his arm around your body and huddling you against his chest. "Shut it! As if ah'd gie a damn whit a vile abomination like ye thinks o' me." You were sligthly taken aback by his unusual public display of affection, but too pleasantly surprised to object.

"That's his wife?" Alucard's little fledgeling Seras was still staring at you, mouth slightly agape as she inspected you from a safe distance. Ever since she got a taste of his viciousness during their first meeting, she's horrified of the mad cleric - so this revelation made her brain hurt. "But she's so...normal?"

"Haha, thank you!" You try to wriggle out of your lover's grip, but he only tightens the embrace. "You're pretty cute too...for a monster, I mean."

"Stop sweet-talkin' the enemy!" Anderson huffs aggravated, making you snort a laugh. "Relax, darlin'."

"Are- are you a vampire-hunter as well?" she inquires, still visibly confused and you're amused at her bewilderment. "No no, I'm merely a supervisor at Anderson's orphanage."

"His what?!" The demonspawn seemed so overwhelmed, she might as well pass out. Being an orphan herself, only imagining being raised by someone like Anderson sent a shiver down her spine.

"Oh, you didn't know? The children adore him! Actually-" To keep you from making him lose face any further, Anderson pressed a firm hand over your mouth, making you frown.

"That's enough!" Lady Hellsing grew tired of this nonsense, still wary of the Vatican's intentions. "Stop wasting my time and state your business."

You pry Anderson's palm away from your lips, but his hands remain on your body, resting on your shoulders as he towers behind you like a guard dog. "My sincere apologies, Sir Integra. She then puts a hand over her heart, clutching the fabric of her blouse. "I was almost killed myself!"

"Alexander..." You raise an eyebrow at the man and he winces at the coldness in your tone. "Is that true?"

"Whit o' it? They're lousy heathens." Rolling your eyes, you turn away from him, murmuring "We'll have a word later", before adressing Sir Integra again. "My husband tends to read the bible with partial blindness for the love and forgiveness part, I fear...but a shared enemy makes us at least temporary allies, does it not? We possess valuable information concerning the group that so deviously invaded your property and massacred your staff. Sincere condolences, by the way."

The stern woman at least partially calms, her unwavering glare wandering over to Maxwell, to whom you entrust the rest. "The bishop will discuss all formalities with you. If you'll excuse us..."

"What a fierce young woman, how refreshing indeed..." Alucard taunts, yet was sincere in his compliment. "I understand what you see in her. She's starting to grow on me already..."

In an instant you hear the familiar clang of Anderson's bayonets as he rummages in his cassock, however you quickly intertwine your fingers with his before he can summon them. He restrains himself for your sake, bites back the urge to destroy and instead focusing on leading you away from any danger.

"Don't get too full of yourself, fiend" you snap back at him, a contradictionary smirk playing on your lips. "Better enjoy the time you got left until my spouse ends your miserable existence..."

"Oh, I'm looking forward to see him try." The vampire grins, bearing his fangs in excitement at the devoted trust you put in your husband's strenght. To add insult to injury he bows down in genuine respect, making Anderson possessively tug you towards him. "I'll go back to sleep. It's tiring to be woken at the midst of day. Be well, my fair lady."

"...we'll return tae the Vatican" your partner murmurs as the two of you walk past Maxwell, absendmindedly stroking back of your hand with his thumb. "There's nothin' left for us tae dae here."

The remaining humans look after you for a while in awkward silence, before attending more important matters again.

Anderson then turns to look at you, a bright, almost innocent smile not quite reaching up to his eyes as he speaks. "This is a braw place. We shall bring the orphans some time, ma love."

"Yeah, right?" you chuckle all timid now, and he gladly joins in with your laughter before his voice turns more grim again. "Ah'm definetly gonnae kill them a' next time..." You rub soothing circles on his back, containing his bloodlust like you've grown used to over the years. "I know you will...thank you for protecting us."

He stills for a while, worrying you as a mixture of apprehension and despair becomes apparent in his features. All of a sudden he pushes you against the next best wall, lips devouring you in an urgent fervor. It takes a while until you break the kiss, dizzy at the lack of oxygen.

"Father..." you breathe in small gasps, beaming up at him. "How unbecoming..."

"Don't get used tae it" he grumbles in his usual, authorative tone, yet pecking another, more tender kiss on the top of your head. "Let's keep gaun."

He decides not to tell you what's shaken him up so briefly, chooses to rather dwell in this rare peaceful moment at your side. Nonetheless, Alucard had invaded his head telepathically, the vampire's words still echoing in his mind.

"I'm glad to see you have something that makes you hold on to your humanity, Judas Priest. I really am. So don't you dare losing it."
