Observations for Bnha volume 37’s cover
Ok there is so much going on in this cover that I don’t even know where to begin and it’s pretty difficult for me to articulate my thoughts when I get scatter brained like this, so here are some important observations I made.
The cover looks similar to the draft version of volume 29’s clover, with the feral deku front in center mourning his injured friends. Except this time, it’s just him and an injured Bakugo— both have a feral deku, and both have an injured, unconscious Bakugo
This cover reminds me of certain comic book illustrations of heros holding injured friends/loved ones/family members in their arms. I am not implying anything in particular, take that information as you will, but it definitely does display closeness between Izuku and Katsuki.
The red used in the background is pretty much the exact same shade of red as the cover of volume 10. Both of these volumes also include hand imagery, as the force of AFO (with Shiguraki under his control/manipulation) stands in their way as heroes and in the way of their development as people and friends
The color same shade of red also appears in many other volumes, such as volumes 2, 8, and 12
This is clearly a pattern, and brining things back to volume 10 again because it is the most similar in terms of design motifs, we are coming back
Red is an extreme color, and is typically used to indicate danger, violence, and general intensity. It is also the color of blood and as we know, Katsuki’s blood has been spilt in an attempt to get to Izuku (which worked before Mirio stepped in as an emergency therapist lol)
@siflshonen told me that red in a Japanese cultural context, red can mean happiness, and is used for special events such as weddings. I’m personally not thinking too hard about this, but it’s still an interesting and thought provoking fun fact I found out as I was trying to dig around for info! (Also, take this information as you )
The red string of fate also exists in Japanese culture. The string is typically depicted as being tied to fingers, and interestingly enough this cover is filled with fingers in the background that happen to be red. Now I am taking this one more seriously, as this could be a sign of how Bakugo and Midoriya’s fates are intertwined within both their lives and the legacy of AFO & OFA (they each represent one half of heroism— saving and winning— afterall) (ps. I’m not necessarily implying a romantic subtext to this, but I do think fate is a key part of MHA’s story and Bakugo and Midoriya’s close relationship)
The colors of Deku’s new costume currently seem to be inconsistent throughout all the images we’ve gotten of it thus far. WHERE IS THE REFERENCE HORIKOSHI I HAVE TO KNOW WHAT COLOR IT IS
Not having character references is an artist’s worst nightmare, trust me
Deku’s face is covered by his cape. This was shown in multiple chapters, but clearly horikoshi wants us to notice as it is front and center. The last time deku’s face was covered was duing the vigilante arc, and I’ve already talked about how much trauma and pain he was trying to hide during that time. This is probably a similar case
We cannot see his expressions with his mouth, so we have no indication on whether he is smiling like he does when he wants to save, or a frown like when he wants to destructively win
This is not a good thing— this is a warning to the audience to be on the lookout for some more moral dilemmas and emotional hurdles for deku to overcome.
Finally, it should be noted that this is the 3rd volume cover to just have Bakugo and Deku on it— no one else. The first one was volume 2, then volume 29, and now volume 37
The volumes start with a literal rift between Bakugo and Midoriya, and they clearly are on opposing sides. We then transition into Bakugo reaching his hand out to (kid) deku, and the gap between them is now being bridged by Bakugo’s outreached hand. We then end with this volume, with Deku supporting Bakugo’s body. The point I’m trying to make is that they ae slowing getting physically closer to eachother with each of these 3 volumes. This clearly shows the growth and recovery of their relationship.
In the 2nd volume I mentioned (volume 29), Bakugo is reaching his hand out to deku while in this volume (volume 37) Deku is putting his hand on Bakugo, almost like he is accepting the hand that Bakugo offered to him. Of course he can’t physically reach out to Bakugo’s hand since he’s kinda sorta dead at the moment, but the symbolism of accepting Bakugo’s hand is there.
Also quick shoutout to @mettywiththenotes for being the first post I saw to mention the similarities between the covers for volumes 10 and 37, right after I was shouting about it to people on discord lol it made me really happy

and so the god raged
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"And so, the pathetic, useless god raged, his doll-like beloved ragged and limp in his arms.
The god was too late. For all the lightning he could blind all with at will, all the fury he could make the mortals feel and hear with one thunder strike, his trembling hand could stop none of the hated rain from invading the gaping hole in the once envied, once blessed youth's chest."

yes yes volume 37's cover is still on my mind

Hori drew this sketch of Kacchan roughing up Izuku over Hori's cover art decision making in Volume 37 and I AM WEAK
Tumblr media
Katsuki: "A scene like this never happened, right?" Izuku: "There were too many scenes he wanted to put on the cover, so it ended up being an illustration of what he imagined instead. (because he couldn't decide...)"
Tumblr media
Kacchan knows this scene didn't happen in the manga, but he's not 100% sure because he was unconscious and he’s also really embarrassed by the drawing ^^; So out came his "Ya better tell ‘em that ya didn't actually do this!!” type attitude with Izuku HAHAHAH! He's too much! Tsundere Kacchan, my beloved! ❀• *₊°。ೋღ

13 Reasons Why Red Riot Will Die Alone
The text was bright red on a blindingly white screen. Shitty clip art and doodles covered the corners of the projected image.
“The fuck is this? You two were supposed to prepare shit for last month’s crime stats.”
“Ummm, we did.” Kaminari flapped his arms toward the words above him. A click sounded from Sero’s hand.
“Exhibit A…Mari.” Both heroes standing at the front of the conference room sighed as Kirishima interrupted proudly.
“Oh, she was fun. I took her to an amusement park.”
“Yea yea. What do you think the A stands for?”
“What’s wrong with taking a date somewhere fun?”
“Oh, nothing at all…except-“
“Except you took HIM with you!” The hero’s arm now swung fiercely toward the table, sending a disc flying across the room.
“Well-we normally don’t have the same day off.” Kirishima mumbled.
“Okayyy, fine. BUT he didn’t bring a date…which is super weird. Then you ditched that poor beautiful innocent woman to race each other in a UA themed obstacle course…for children.”
Another click sounded, dissolving the screen into a picture of Bakugou standing on Kirishima’s collapsed body. He was waving an Allmight squishmallow proudly…and aggressively.
“Ha! I should get that shit framed.”
“Laugh now, but we’ll get to you after we’re done with Mr. Never-gonna-steal-your-girl.”
“Me? The hell are you-“
“No, I don’t want to hear it. We’ve had it. You two are actual menaces to society. And even worse…you are ruining us. Our agency came LAST on the eligible heroes list. Do you UNDERSTAND THAT??? L-A-S-T.” Kaminari turned swiftly, slamming a tired fist as his forehead met the wall in frustration.
Sero nodded solemnly. “What he means is…Everyone we went to school with beat us.”
“You don’t mean-“
“That. Grape. Infested. Goblin. Beat. Us.” Kaminari punctuated each of Sero’s words with a smack against the wall.
“How the fuck?”
“How the fuck indeed, Mr. Screams-the-first-thing-that-pops-into-his-bleached-porcupine-head?”
“I DON’T-“ Bakugou coughed and adjusted his volume before continuing “-fuckin’ do that.”
“Oh yea? What’d you say the other day when that woman gave you her number during patrol?”
The hero huffed. “I asked her out and she didn’t text me back.”
“Oh, yes. I see. You calmly and gently asked her out and she just for no reason at all blocked you.” Bakugou’s nod of agreement was halted as Kaminari’s voice grew icy and shrill. “That absolutely did NOT HAPPEN.”
Sero patted the charged hero’s shoulder with an understanding hand before taking over the retelling.
“You shouted ‘Take a hike!’ at this doe eyed angel in black. Then came into work the next day confused when you still hadn’t heard from her.”
Kaminari sighed, rubbing his temples before addressing the two professional problems in the room once again.
“So we have closed the agency for the week and Deku’s team will be covering our patrol shifts, while we educate you.”
“YOU DID WHAT???!!!”
“See what I mean? This is going to take a LOT of time. I thought we talked about the screaming already.”

Tired, but finally kinda finished this draft that’s been festering for months.

Here are two of the most famous deaths in Western superhero comics. These deaths are often referenced by other artists, especially in Western comics and manga.
The Death of Jason Todd (1988)
The tragic end of Batman's second adopted son and a great personal failure for Bruce Wayne. This pose is usually referenced for platonic or familial deaths, specifically grieving parents. Now, this HAS been occasionally used for romantic relationships, but it's comparatively rare.
Tumblr media
The Death of Gwen Stacey (1973)
[original panel and a special edition cover from 2002]
The tragic end of Spider-man's girlfriend and the beginning of a very, very dark state of mind for the hero. This is the CLASSIC "dead girlfriend of a vengeful superhero" pose, maybe the originator of the trope, and it's referenced constantly in media. Importantly, this crouching (NOT KNEELING), protective half-cradle and rage from the hero is a superhero pose used almost exclusively for romantic relationships.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now look at the Volume 37 cover. Which of these two incredibly iconic and internationally known deaths does it look more like?
Tumblr media
Now, you could argue that Horikoshi is referencing the death of Superman in the New 52 (2014).
Tumblr media
I don't think this is true for a number of reasons.
1. Horikoshi CONSTANTLY references Spider-man and many parallels can be drawn between your friendly neighborhood Spider-man and your friendly neighborhood Deku. I do not see the same level of meta/art references or parallels for Deku and Batman.
2. The New 52 is widely despised by DC fans (FOR GOOD REASON) and absolutely nothing in it has had the sheer cultural impact of the death of Gwen Stacy. In fact, the only thing I can think of is... the resurrection of Jason Todd 👀
3. [this one's petty] This is another part of the grand tradition of Unintentionally Homoerotic Superman and Batman. It is what it is.

It's been a month since the cover of Volume #37 is released. I still remember when I first saw it and thought its a fan-art then screaming, crying and thrashing when I found it canon and really drawn by Horikoshi sensei
The bakudeku covers:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is the bkdk covers so far. Oh, how fast the night changes. Their first cover having a black like crack between them signifying that their relationship is still unstable and broken. My favorite cover is volume #29. Katsuki reaching his hand to a small Izuku on the river really makes me have a warm and soft feeling. He really regretted not taking his hand back then. Not to mention Katsuki's expression is everything. Volume #37 is my 2nd favorite but I just can't handle the angst. My heart still breaks whenever I think about Deku's rage, him holding Kacchan's chest so tenderly and ready to protect him to anyone and of course Katsuki just laying in Izuku's arms 😭💔
Special mention to the back cover of volume #33. I love it so much. The rain, their colors in the background green and orange skies, Katsuki's soft and worried expression and you can see his eyes that he is not having enough sleep ever since Izuku left UA 🥹
Then if you notice the clear white space on the left of them which I think means emptiness and distance. Which means ever since Izuku left UA Katsuki must have felt empty and bleak.
Don't mind me having a brainrot of bkdk covers right now. I just miss them so much 😩🥺
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The back cover can also be the apology that will be animated soon. Hope bones won't mess it up. It's one of the most important moments between them 🤧🧡
