mitchels vs machines (spoilers)
Tumblr media
didn’t like it
I wanted to watch it when it came out, because I heard the name ‘miller and lord’, the guys who did Spider-Verse and other cool stuff. Then I saw the main character had a Pride pin on her shirt, and I was worried it would be woke.
Tumblr media
But I gave it a shot anyway.
Take a look at the main character, Katie. What do you think her core character concept is?
>Ironically post-grunge teen hipster?
Good guess, but no. Here’s a hint; she’s about to leave for art school. Combine that with the Pride pin.
>Her design concept is stereotypical college lesbian?
So I assume.
But okay, it’s a cartoon, they deal in broad archetypes. Whatever. You know what also bugs me about the movie? Much more? As a character designer?
The eyes.
Tumblr media
Look at them.
The bodies are mostly realistic, with stylized proportions, but the eyes are just tiny dots in an oval of almost-flat white like a psycho Korean webcomic character. All that’s missing is the fisheye overhead lens.
Tumblr media
There’s probably ways to make those work in 3D, but the animators used precisely none of them. They’re barely even 3D.
Okay, okay, I’m kidding. Let’s scale it back. To that horrible Squirrel Girl art.
Tumblr media
I browse /r/ImaginarySliceOfLife. There’s a lot of pictures there with a realistically drawn setting, a realistic character/s, and then the face is basically standard flat anime cel-shading. MvstM’s art direction reminds me of that.
Let’s get back to Katie. While she’s chatting with her pals on Zoom or whatever, one of them tries to sell her on the school because it has “diversity”. No backspin or depth, the statement just lays there. This is foreshadowing for the reveal that she’s gay/bi at the end, when she reaches the school and the girl we thought was her friend was actually her girlfriend! What a tweest!
Oh, wait, no, I’m not sure why we’re actually supposed to care about that. It’s not some shocking twist. Is it trying to improve gay acceptance by making us like the character and then revealing she was gay? Because it wasn’t exactly subtle. Or well-written. I don’t see how it recontextualized her character in any significant way. It just feels extremely token.
...California should’ve been a hint.
Writing-wise, what’s the lie the protagonists believe? The Dad thinks tech is bad. The mom keeps using her phone to compare herself to the perfect Joneses, played by John Legend and Chrissy Teigen basically playing themselves.
The son is obsessed with dinosaurs and also he thinks the Joneses’ daughter is cute and he’s socially awkward. Katie...well, she feels her small town doesn’t appreciate her and her tastes and her ironic, 30ish-writer’s idea of what the kids like these days, (which is apparently Youtube poops) - and want to go to art school.
Oddly enough, I should empathize with her. I went off to art school. I didn’t fit in at home. We both wear glasses. Heck, she’s even part black, and I’m entirely black. I’m from the Caribbean, so I think that makes me, like, 120% black.
But her story still bores me.
Ostensibly, the idea is “she learns to appreciate her family and her new friends by working together to save the world from the Metaphors.” The mom should learn that the other family isn’t perfect and she needs to accept her own family’s flaws and stop comparing herself to the Joneses’ idealized image. Dad learns tech isn’t all bad. Little brother learns how to accept himself and take his shot and of course it turns out the Joneses’ daughter actually likes to hear him talk about dinos.
Tumblr media
Did I mention that I’ve also been writing regularly for over a decade now? On top of being a bibliophile?
These are all good arcs, on paper - I’ve written about and struggled with some of them myself - but I just wasn’t feeling it. I think the script needed more time in the oven.
I stopped watching in one scene where the tech-company-AI’s rogue robots are hunting all humans - yes, I know, the metaphor is very nuanced - and the tech-hating dad takes their phones and gleefully stomps them to pieces, a gigantic smile on his face, insisting he’s not enjoying it.
Then he hands the little pieces back to the son, who thanks him.
And that’s the joke.
It’s not actually funny to me. It’s just awkward and cringy. Maybe that’s because I spend most of my waking hours looking at a screen, but all I could think of was the hundreds of bucks of electronics he was cheerfully destroying.
Maybe it would’ve been funnier on Fairly Oddparents, in 2D. Maybe it would’ve been funnier without the other three family members watching him in shock and horror.
Now that I’m typing this maybe it reminded me - somewhere deep down - of my own abusive mother, who once destroyed a book I was reading in similar fashion.
Maybe that’s my real problem with the movie.
TEAL DEAR: Movie’s not woke, IMO, just mediocre.

HTaHHQ episode 4: Unarmed part 1
Whoops, sorry, no new Outside chapter this week, or the next. Wanted to get this posted too so I could start getting more episodes written. Don't worry though, it will return next month! :D
"I don't see why we have to come here today. Can't you just do this at home?" Stacy complained as Mary led them into the Studio. It was a dark, stormy Saturday, perfect for staying inside. Instead, her and Danny had to go to "work" with Mary.
"Stacy, honey, I would love to just stay home but Nick's stupid edits to my script mean I have to come in. All of us writers have to." She sighed irritably.
"Yeah, but why can't Danny and I just stay home? I can watch him." She tried desperately.
"Because... it's illegal." Mary swept her unbrushed hair back. "Besides, I thought you liked Scout. You told me you wanted to spend the weekend with her."
"Yeah. At home. Not here." The thirteen year old deadpanned as Mary moved towards the offices. The woman sighed in response, reaching the end of her patience.
"Look, why don't you take your brother and go find her? It'll be a lot more interesting than what I'm doing."
"You mean tearing Nick a new one?" She asked, sounding interested. "Cause I want to watch that."
"You don't get to watch that. Go find Scout." Were the last words Mary said before towards the offices.
"Fine." Stacy groaned as her stepmother went into her office. She grabbed Danny's arm with her left and led him in the direction of the Sound Stage. He followed her eagerly, just excited to be there at a time he normally wasn't.
Her intent was to find Daisy and have her let them into the elevator to go upstairs. If they couldn't find her, she was planning on using the vents to get into the playroom instead. She remembered the way, mostly, and it'd be easier than trying to work up the courage to ask someone else.
Unfortunately, Daisy was nowhere to be found. They looked all over the Sound Stage, checked her House Set, and then looked in the cafeteria. But, sadly, no Daisy. Which meant Stacy had to pick the lock on one of the prop closets to reach the vents.
"Hmm, two children where they're not supposed to be." Stacy froze mid break in as Danny ran over to the Puppet, who sighed and leaned down to ruffle his hair. "Yes yes, it's nice to see you too, Danny."
Stacy struggled to keep her voice even. "Uh, w-where's Daisy?" She stowed the picks back under her glove as she stood up and turned to face the scientist.
She wasn't the scariest looking Puppet(poor Nick held that title, even among the other staff). But, Stacy had always held a fear of doctors, dentists, anyone who wore scrubs and a lab coat basically. Which Riley did, unfortunately, and it made the girl more nervous than the others did.
Well, that, and the forums talking about how she must be doing unethical experiments to get a dog as big as the Rosco puppet. But Stacy was pretty sure that was for in the show, not real life. Probably.
Riley let out a huff of annoyance. "In the writer's room with our annoying brat of a brother. His edits to the script have caused her scenes to be quite a bother." She sighed. "What do you need her for, anyway? And why are you two here on this day?"
"... Mary's the head writer." Stacy told her, clenching her sleeves in her fists. "And it's, like, illegal to leave us home alone or something. I don't know."
"Ah, I see, but you only answered question number two." She pointed out in a matter-of-fact sort of way. "What for you, could Daisy do?"
Stacy thought that rhyme was a little bit of a stretch, with the wording and all. But, before she could respond Danny clapped his hands, and pointed towards the ceiling. "Scout!" He told her excitedly. "We're here to see Scout!"
"Ah, I understand now." She did not look happy about it either. Stacy wondered why. "Fine then, I'll call the elevator down."
She led the two kids to the elevator doors and inserted her own key-card, unlocking them. Stacy waited uncomfortably as it slowly descended, trying to keep between her brother and Riley. It was difficult, as he kept leaning around her to talk at the Puppet, who listened politely.
When the elevator arrived, Stacy pulled Danny into it with a quickly muttered "Thanks". It took everything in her to not button mash the floor number she wanted. She did her best not to stare at the Puppet as the doors closed, but it was difficult when she could feel her weird wooden eyes piercing into her soul.
When they reached the upper floor, Stacy practically dragged her brother out of the elevator. It started to go back down almost immediately, so she hurried to the playroom, rushing through Daisy's sewing room to get to it. She didn't knock, but did ease the door open slowly so as not to startle them. When she got it fully opened, Scout flung herself and landed on her face.
"Stacy!" She screamed, and the girl almost had to peel her off her face. She lifted the small Puppet up to let her rest on top of her head.
"Hi, Scout. Mom's here to deal with some... script issues, I guess, and she brought me and Danny." Danny waved, and Scout waved back. "So I brought some movies for us all to watch."
"Yay, movies!" Bonzai latched onto her backpack, working the zipper open so he could climb inside. Stacy put the bag on the floor and he burst out a second later, with a video in his hands. "Terminatooooor!" He yelled, and Canon facepalmed.
"Yeah, we can watch that one first." Stacy told them and grabbed the tape, going over to put it in the player. She put it in and turned on the TV, hitting play once it had booted up. They sat back to watch, most of the Puppets migrating to sit on the human children.
Surprisingly, they managed to watch in silence, though Stacy and Danny did have their own commentary in sign language. Only Scout really understood it, but she didn't understand much. She had only just started to learn, after all, and was looking at the signs backwards.
The movie ended, and Bonzai immediately dove back into the backpack with Bit. Together they searched for another action movie while Stacy rewound the Terminator.
"Hey, how come there are only baby movies in here?" Bit asked angrily, popping out of the bag with a tape in her arms.
"I'd hardly call Shrek or Spirited Away 'baby' movies." Stacy frowned, picking up the anime movie. "Mom wouldn't even let me watch this one until just last year."
"But they're cartoons, and cartoons are so boring!" Bonzai complained.
"What kind of cartoons are you watching?" She muttered as she took the film out of it's box and crouched by the player. Louder, she said "I promise, Spirited Away isn't boring. Anime is awesome."
"Mom never lets us watch anime. She says it's inappropriate for kids." Canon told her, and Stacy sighed.
"Well, she's wrong. Sailor Moon and Digimon and Pokemon are all for kids." She told the Puppets, with Danny nodding along beside her. "And there's a lot more than just that. I'll record some episodes to bring next time."
"Okay but we can't tell Mom." A pause as Canon raised her voice so her siblings could hear. "Nobody tell Mom Stacy's showing us anime."
"Okay!"
"Sure!"
"Whatever."
Were the three answers she got, which she called good enough for now. At least she knew nobody would tell Mom, if only for the promise of Forbidden Goods.
While they watched the movie, Stacy sat with her arms full of Handpuppets. It was like holding a litter of puppies, as they never stopped moving and sometimes crawled away to do other stuff. At one point, Bonzai pulled out a couple of magnets to play with. As he pulled them apart to let them fly back together, he was startled when they instead attached themselves to Stacy's right arm.
"Stacy's a terminator!" He shrieked, and immediately teleported away.
"What?! No I-!" She jolted when a small, stuffed bear hit her on the head. "Dude!"
"Bonzai, what the heck?!" Canon followed him onto the bookcase he'd hidden on top of.
"She's an evil robot! The magnets are sticking to her arm!" He cried, and when Stacy looked there were two small magnets caught on her. She pulled them off and tossed them aside while Canon tried to calm her brother down.
"Hey! Stacy's not a robot!" Scout angrily shouted up at her siblings.
"Then what is she?" Bit asked, having picked up a small stick. Scout opened her mouth, then snapped it shut.
"I... can't tell you that." She finally said. "But I swear she's not a robot."
A long pause of silence, and then Canon figured it out and smacked Bonzai off the bookshelf. "It's a prosthetic, you idiot!"
"Oh." Was all the fallen Puppet said as he laid limply where he'd landed. Canon face-palmed, followed by Bit, while Stitch went to check on their brother.
"Can we see it?" Bit asked excitedly, already trying to pull back her sleeve. Stacy yanked her arm up and away from the Puppet.
"No! You can't see it!" She snapped.
"Yeah, it's not that interesting anyways." Scout tried to help, very unhelpfully.
"You've seen it?! That's not fair!" Bit complained, and Bonzai Jumped over too.
"Yeah! You can't just show Scout! She's lame!" He insisted, to the human teen's unamused look.
"Scout's my favorite." Stacy told them bluntly, to two offended gasps while Scout cheered and then mocked them.
"Yeah, I'm her favorite! Who's lame now? Losers. Ow!" Canon smacked her head, turning on her eye lights.
"Don't be smug about it!" She scolded her younger sister, who grumbled and retreated to the top of Stacy's head.
"Hey, no hitting." Stacy tried to scold, then just gave a tired sigh. "Look. let's just go back to the movie, it's fine."
"No! I wanna see the robot arm!" Bonzai lunged for her, but Stacy yanked her arm away again and he landed on the carpet instead. "Come on! You showed it to Scout!"
"Yeah, and I'm not showing it to anybody else!" She retorted, while Danny picked up Bonzai. The puppet struggled against the five year old's hold, but ultimately failed to escape.
"I'm helping!" Danny pipped up happily as he sat back down to finish the movie.
"Yep. You are." His sister muttered. They managed about five more minutes of movie before Bonzai managed to escape Danny's grasp. He instantly went back over to her, draping himself over her arm.
"I still wanna see the arm." He said, and Stacy groaned as she fell back against the carpet, hands pressed against her face.
"Noooooo." She moaned out. "I. Don't. Wanna. Show you."
"Please! We all wanna see!" Bit piped up. Stacy uncovered her face and looked over at Stitch, who nodded. Her gaze turned to Canon, who looked away sheepishly.
"I mean, it's not like I don't want to see it..." She admitted quietly, and Stacy gave an irritated sigh.
"Fine! Fine. But you only get one look! And none of you get to ask me again!" She waited until they all nodded, before starting to roll up her sleeve, revealing just how long her glove really was. Carefully, she pulled it off, revealing gleaming silver metal that ended just above her elbow. The flesh that met the metal was scarred, rough and pale against the smooth brown that was the rest of her skin.
"Oooooh, so shiny..." Bonzai muttered. The four Puppets that hadn't seen it yet stared, transfixed, at the limb. Scout, who had also reacted that same way, just rolled her eyes.
"Weirdos." She muttered, though she also couldn't help but watch as Stacy flexed her hand and showed off the arm.
"It's really advanced, and really expensive." She told them. "And I'm supposed to go in for upgrades in a few months due to growth spurts."
"Why are you even hiding this? It makes you so much cooler than anyone else." Bit told her, and she shrugged, pulling the glove back on.
"Because I don't want them to know about it." Stacy said bluntly, letting her sleeve drop back down. "Now can we please go back to the movie? It's one of my favorites."
"Yeah, we can do that." Canon said, and then forced her siblings to turn back to the screen, which had been playing the movie the whole time. Giving a relieved sigh, Stacy did the same, settling in as she made sure her glove was on straight.
They watched the movie silently, the small Puppets getting way too into it in Stacy's opinion. But, at least they liked it, and that was all she really cared about. By the end of it, however, most of them were still riled up, including Danny, so Stacy put in Barbie Swan Lake instead.
"But that's a girls movie!" Bonzai complained, to which Stitch shushed him.
"You should give the movie a chance. The story is about a rather interesting dance." She told him, to which he groaned louder.
"Stacy can dance!" Danny piped up, to which Stacy internally sighed.
'Great word association there. Does everything have to come back to me?' She shook her head slightly, trying to keep from sounding resentful.
"You can?!" That was Scout, now staring up at her with wide eyes. "You never told me that!"
"That's because I can't do it anymore. The weight distribution is off with my arm." She told her.
"Can you still show us some moves? Please?" Five Puppets, and one younger brother, stared up at her, begging with surprisingly good puppy-dog-eyes. She could feel her resolve wavering, even as she focused on the TV.
"Ugh..." She hated being the oldest. Why did all the younger kids think she was cool? "Fine. I'll do a dance. But don't ask me for anything else today."
"Yay!" Everyone, including Danny, cheered, as Stacy moved to get ready. Lucky her, they were dancing on the movie, so she could just do what they were doing. It wasn't terribly complicated, as she'd been in a production of Swan Lake before, though not as Odette. The moves that were a little too complex, were easy to fake with a bit of effort.
It was easy to lose herself in it, just like she used to. Easy enough that she stopped looking at the screen, and simply did the dance from memory.
And thus, it was easy enough to misstep and slide on a piece of paper during a spin. A yell, and a loud, sharp thud as she landed, and things went black.

So we are not lust we hate be lusted for and we stand for empathy and justice! We are all multi gender and they make fun of my feminine side (in past and killed me since I didn’t want the business to be the way it was and didn’t want to be morman with them since literally everyone is related to everyone and they’re made I realize that again and that’s why they’re freaking out that I want to be single forever- garnet stronger than you- they are jasper I am Lapris-spinel symbolism is Janines reactions to all of this and how innocent we truly are.. Pink diamond is truly is and our story but backwards so many hate us, we died and grew to realize life’s beauty like in the rose video tape but they grounded us and other races took over- night began to rise teen Titans music story- pink is I- evil wizard made matrix- wake up everyone!!! Don’t be afraid of your spiritual strengths or you’ll be trapped in the matrix eternally!!!!!!) so all have to realize sensitivity and symphony and empathy are strengths not weaknesses!!!)
Dead in real life- matrix is like spotless sunshine- going through her memories deleting and creating new ways that they like- programming I- Janine is the spark of brain-aura lights- all fuse into I janines consciousness and they want to wake me back up and I’ll be alive but only with janines memories.. but I’m princess and choosing to heal all and find solution to heal entire egg - brain remove THIER corruption (33 players made online game to crest ultimate lover) wake up like ghost in shell but Frankenstein or AI as programmed chobit, all humans are like this too in pods like matrix because humanity failed and ai war in past (9, last mimzy, AI, I robot) save nature learn lessons spark everyone’s free will- all brains connected (matrix, online multiplayer but not because organic so it’s really spiritual but to make sense of it it is also AI like computer and video games!! Movies have Easter eggs multiple perspectives, find out whom your soul is and spiritually wake up, everyone will be mocked!) I’m not the only one but at same time here I am if that even makes sense.. (favorite daughter like Ariel aka Jasmine) I may be the only one because I am the chosen one, I am the Universe(Soul).. Mother Gaia(Spirit) but Janine(Vessel//Temple) (not supposed to be a prison nor is the planet, let’s fix it and if the only way is staying alive forever then so be it and let’s heal the whole egg and live together peacefully but please don’t let them turn me into a tool or deceive anyone or force sin I am against sin!) (If not I shall be karma for the lack of empathy and removal of sin in all universes- there’s multiverses) (end result hopefully beach race from valarien but abilities like X-men and peaceful and many races and beautiful nature and growth not trauma-no sin)

26, 29, 30, 36?
*cracks knuckles*Alright, let’s do this.
26: The late Robin Williams & Hayao Miyazaki are two particular people in my life I’ve idolized for what happiness/imagination they’ve brought into others lives. Robin Williams untimely passing still hurts for me to look back on because this man made it his mission to bring so much joy into other peoples lives through his acting on the big screen, whether it was dramatic or comedic. That’s what I found the most impressive about Robin’s range in acting. He could be an over the top funny individual, but Robin’s acting chops were in a league of their own. Whether he was behind the microphone having the time of his life as Genie on Aladdin or giving a powerful dramatic performance on Good Will Hunting as Will’s therapist, I could feel the unconditional kindness. There was something about Robin’s acting power that would usually manage to reel me in. Even if I never knew him in real life, obviously, this man just radiated with so much kindness that I felt from his entire presence on screen. It’s seriously unfortunate what became of Robin Williams in the end with his unexpected death, but his legacy has inspired me to be kinder to others in real life. As for Hayao Miyazaki, this guy is a huge factor in why I got into loving anime related stuff all the more, as his creations in storytelling and the art itself for the movies were beyond unlike anything I still have yet to seen be topped quite frankly. It’s so easy for me to get emotionally lost in his films like My Neighbor Totoro, Princess Mononoke, Castle In The Sky, and Spirited Away. This man never ceases to amaze me with how usually impactful and in depth his films are. They’re so full life that it’s easy to lose sight of whats happening in the actual story at times. Mayazaki understood how to breathe a ton of humanity into creating such resonating works of fiction. Have a much greater appreciation for them in my adult years. There’s a reason why they inspired companies, like Pixar, to create immersive stories of their own.

36: My three dream scenarios I’d like to fulfill?
1: Become A Voice Actor
Been interested in voice acting since I was a young teen, but have been in a conflicted state over these recent passing years in my life on whether or not I’d like to approach that route. There’s a lot of commitment I’d have to put into auditioning my butt off for roles I may or not get. Then comes the consistent practicing to keep my vocal chords in shape, so I don’t get rusty whatsoever. The industry for this kind of job can be hard to get recognized in too by how many other notable well known VA’s there are already. Not to mention, from what I’ve researched up on being a voice actor doesn’t bring in the money naturally, as it’s more of a passion job which that’s terrific and all, but if I want to partake in this profession I’ll have to juggle a job along with that which putting all those factors in my head honestly makes me intimidated. Ahhh well, it’s just something I’ll have to wait and see on if I can make that idea into a reality or not. No need to rush myself, of course.
2: Taking Up The Mantle Of Reviewing Shows & Films For A Living
Fiction, just like for many people, has been a great deal of helping me in my life moments of stress, solitude, depression, and anger. I’d love nothing more than to further express that to anyone out there in reviewing in great detail certain films or shows that I’ve come to love over these years in my life so far. Mostly for animation though, as its been a gateway for finding many gems of quality films or series. It never ceases to surprise me on how creative and powerful animation can be with its inventive ways of getting me to become an emotional mess. While I do enjoy live action series and films they pale in comparison to the beauty animation has brought into my life, since my early childhood of watching shows on Cartoon Network, Toon Disney, and Nickelodeon to a smaller degree. I’d like to think I’m good enough with how I present my reasons on why I feel so strongly connected to these stories showcasing characters trying to find hope in their own hard times. I try my hardest to take moments of my own life and find ways to connect it with whatever story I’m getting into next, so it can be all the more a special experience for myself. It’s important to put whatever character resonates with you most in their shoes for why you feel their emotional journey connecting with your own life on every conceivable level possible. That will make it when you write these kinds of reviews a very empowering read for others to feel either heard in their own feelings or simply giving others a new perspective to consider on this piece of fiction you’re discussing. Seeing some of my own particular analytical posts in the past here on Tumblr garner some attention from people gives me a boost of feeling better about potentially making this choice.
3: Starting A Family Of My Own…?
I can’t begin to tell ya how many times I’ve gone back and forth for getting married in the distant future to become a father has sped through my mind. On one hand, it scares the crap out of me to be taking up that big of a responsibility. However, on the other hand its deeply fascinated me emotionally of creating life through love for your significant other in starting your own family tree. I’d love to be able to raise kids of my own to pass on the lessons I’ve learned in life to make them become better people in the distant future, while showering them with unconditional love and affection. That would fill me up with such an indescribable joyous feeling to hear their own dreams and desires on what they want to accomplish in life. While I’d be a strict parent, I wouldn’t be a hard headed one quick to dismiss their own complaints if they had problems with how I handled things, once they start to get older. The kind of parent I’d want to be is an understanding open minded one who doesn’t judge their son or daughter for when they have an issue with me. Just because I’m a parent in that scenario doesn’t put me on a pedestal of immunity from criticism. Granted, I certainly don’t want to be a doormat for them to try taking advantage of either, but it’s also important to not let your parental role go to your head, too.
Although, I don’t plan on even trying to make this last dream of mine happen anytime soon. This is something that is MUCH later down the road that I wish to have happen. However, I won’t lie and say that I haven’t considered just staying content as a single guy for the rest of my life relying on close friends to bring me joy equivalent to this dream. While I adore the concept of creating life through love and being a father, there’s a shit ton of responsibility that comes with it. The life of a parent is not just putting your all into it. You gotta give more than just 100% when wanting to be a parent. It’s a serious test of your spiritual endurance, which I’m not sure is something I’ll ever have the courage to do, but then again things can change in life on the flip of a dime, so I’ll see how this all plays out for myself. Maybe I’ll stay happily single or I’ll happily be raising kids.
Gee, I wonder why this dream of being a parent resurfaced in my head recently this year? Oh yeah, it was thanks to this character here.
Tumblr media
Seriously, Della Duck holds a real special place in my heart for making me feel these kind of feelings yet again. Darn you space mom! LOL.
Thanks for the ask, man.

5 best Kids Room Decoration ideas
Kids of all ages want to be treated as someone special. They want to have great moments wherever they are. For any child, his living space is a special zone. He wants his room to look amazing in every possible way. He wants to feel great whenever he looks around. It is very important to make the room look different from other rooms in the home. It should not be too formal otherwise it will be boring for the child. It is recommended to consider your child’s preferences while decorating the room. It must highlight his likes, his passions, and his personality. The most important part in this regard is the walls. It is not merely the surrounding element but also covers the major part of the room. Simple paints won’t do much. Adding canvas paints of different types can make the room look lively. If you are planning to make your child’s room great you can use any of the following 5 decoration ideas.
1. The alphabets canvas
Alphabets are the first recognition of any child. He associates with them all through his life. A child enjoys tracing the shapes of the alphabets with fingers. Finding alphabets among blends of images is always fun. The alphabets in unique shapes and fonts also add life to the child’s fun time. Getting canvas with alphabets can be a great addition to any child’s room. They are an excellent piece of art and learning at the same time. This will give them an opportunity to learn and have fun together.
2. Family on the canvas
What can be more delightful than having your family around? A child feels safe when feels the family around. Although there is no compensation of the physical presence still the photographs collected together in a college can be a heartwarming feeling. There is a number of interesting ways to bring the pictures together in one whole. Add pictures to the canvas that have all the family members together. A psychiatrist suggested that such collage and collections on the walls can be effective in the times of grief and pain. They release special vibes that make the child feel happy.
3. Friendly canvas
The children in the teens enjoy being with friends. Friends make them feel grown-ups. There are some excellent memories related to these friends. From the playground to parties the friends are everywhere.
These beautiful memories don’t let you feel bad. Once the friends are around such canvas helps them recall the beautiful days. It, therefore, becomes a cherished moment in anyone’s life.
4. The animal world
Animals are always the best friends. Whether they are the loving domestic animals or the wild attractions kids are in love with all. The colorful birds and butterflies are another source of joy. There is no particular specification for the animals. Talk to your child, ask about his passion and then transform into a beautiful canvas. Girls are usually in love with birds and butterflies. The boys prefer the wildest things. Dino World is another attraction for the kids. The huge dinosaurs that are nonexistent nowadays but they are still there in the dreams of every child. Before trying out this canvas it is extremely important to check that the dinos are not too huge to scare away the kids at night or in the dark.
5. The world of animation
Nothing is as close to the heart of a child as is the cartoon characters. The choices vary according to gender, age, and likes. Despite all these variations cartoons and animations cannot be separated from a child’s life. The girls prefer living in a world of dreams. They want to have the prince, princesses, and fairies roaming all around them. It gives them a royal feeling today. The boys love adventure. Cars, airplanes, robots, ninja and similar. Canvas prints focusing on these animated characters can be a great addition to customize the room of your child. A child’s room is a very special area. The more you decorate it with care and concern the more it shows your affection. It is important to involve your child in the room décor. Take his suggestions. Let him think and plan. One time canvas is a great option for a child’s room because if the children scribble on it or do any kind of mess on it they can be replaced easily. These five ideas are simple but easy. They can make the room look like a child’s universe. The large canvas prints can be chosen in such a way that they complement the other accessories of the room. Together all of these can make a child’s room a great living surrounding for any child.

Weekly Spotlight #4
Week number 4 of the Weekly Spotlight! I apologize for the wait; I’m still working out the kinks in my schedule.
Alrighty! So! Our weekly spotlight winner is:
*an even more vibrant drumroll!*
My Life as a Teenage Robot
Tumblr media
I have a lot of fond memories of this show, as I’m sure many others do. Before sitting down and rewatching a couple episodes, from what I remembered about it, it was a little bit of an odd-ball. It always skirted this line of being accessible enough that the average viewer could relate to it while also being straight up bizarre enough to remember just how different this world is from our own. This show would mix the 1950′s aesthetic with science fiction concepts to cement itself, at least in my mind, alongside other animations such as Meet The Robinsons, George Shrinks! and, oddly enough, Samurai Jack. It was a slice of life, mixed with action and adventure, and some elements of horror? Which... ended up distinguishing itself from other similar “crime fighting teenagers” like Kim Possible, Teen Titans, or W.I.T.C.H. As a result, this show dealt with a lot of common problems and themes that teenagers faced in very odd ways, all under the guise of an action, sci-fi show.
So let’s have a little bit of a history lesson, shall we?
Back in the late 90′s, Nickelodeon began to host a show that was called Oh Yeah! Cartoons which has been called TV’s biggest animation development program ever. Dozens of filmmakers were contracted by Nickelodeon to create 7 minute cartoons that would be spliced together into a half-hour time-slot. This “show” would then air on television and depending on the approval ratings of the audience, these cartoon shorts would then be commissioned into a TV show for Nick. Producing nearly 100 of these cartoon shorts, this “animation laboratory” would jumpstart many individuals’ careers in the industry such as Seth MacFarlane, Vincent Waller, Dave Wasson, and Butch Hartman.
One such individual would be a man named, Rob Renzetti with a short titled, My Neighbor Was A Teenage Robot. Due to very high approval ratings, Nickelodeon commission for the show and would later on be titled, My Life As a Teenage Robot. It aired in 2003 and was eventually cancelled after 3 seasons (ironically) due to poor ratings.
Tumblr media
So for our premise!
Jenny (or, XJ-9, as her mother calls her) is a crime-fighting, superhero robot who dreams of being a teenage girl just like other human beings. However, she has to juggle her duties as a superhero and her social life as a teenager, which leads wacky shenanigans, problems, and overall, grief  for Jenny as she attempts to fit in. She’s partnered with her friends Brad and Tuck as they tag along on her adventures, and she even has an admirer named, Sheldon, who tries to woo her in his own awkward way. She fights monsters, aliens, and a robot queen named, Vexus who is trying to recruit Jenny her robot world the planet Cluster Prime, while also dealing with the Crust Cousins who are out to destroy Jenny’s social reputation. Can a girl ever catch a break?
These episodes are broken up into 2 eleven minute segments with problems that are usually resolved by the end of the episode. There isn’t so much of a “continuity” per se, but there are episodes that reference earlier ones so while you can dive right in with any old episode you want, I’d keep in mind which one I’m choosing.
Tumblr media
So on the whole how did this series hold up?
Well, the first several episodes are pretty shaky. Although the visuals were very unique to watch and the soundtrack was entertaining to listen to, I felt that some of the episodes weren’t all that entertaining. The problems felt fairly realistic, or at least believable for a “teenage robot,” however, it was easy to tell that the creators were still figuring out what they wanted to do with this series. What kind of character did they want to make Jenny? What kind of dynamic did they want the support cast to be like? What kind of bad guys did they want Jenny to go up against? And as a result, some of the early episodes suffered in quality. Overall, I felt like the first season, especially a lot of the first half, was simply establishing the status quo of the series. Yet, in spite of this, there were several episodes that I felt that the series really hit its stride and gave a solid balance of uniqueness and familiarity that left me both intrigued for more and very entertained with the product I’ve received.
There were some episodes that left me simply... disturbed. Two of them being Attack of 5 and 1/2 ft. Geek and The Return of the Raggedy Android. Some of you might remember the second one as the skin episode... (And if you don’t, consider yourself blessed...) With Attack of the 5 and 1/2 ft. Geek, Jenny has a screw loose in her arm and solicits the help of Sheldon to fix her problem. Having a large passion for robotics, Sheldon is not only happy to help but also becomes extremely infatuated with Jenny after she saves him. Extremely infatuated. To the point of stalking her. And showering her with unnecessary gifts. The others kids at school even laugh at her and bully her for her newfound “boyfriend.” Jenny is obviously embarrassed and uncomfortable and finds any excuse to get away from him. Eventually, she gets a call from her mother saying that there’s a gang downtown (the Lonely Heart’s Club, btw) which is causing havoc and requires her assistance. With Sheldon following her every move, the gang gets very jealous of Sheldon and Jenny’s “relationship” and kidnaps Sheldon. Jenny has to swoop in and save him, having also finally snapped at having Sheldon being called her boyfriend. She goes off, calling Sheldon creepy, a stalker, and a host of other things that are not only accurate, but legitimate concerns that any other teenage girl would have in such a situation. Sheldon is hurt and in a weird turn of events, he saves Jenny after she gets captured during her rant. The episode ends with Jenny apologizing about what she said and says that maybe they can hang out sometime... as friends. Just... friends. Sheldon goes on to be a recurring character of the series, causing a lot of shenanigans and other problems as a result of his infatuation.
Since the series ended with Jenny never establishing a relationship with either Brad nor Sheldon, many speculate as to which one she would have started dating. Although there aren’t any definitive answers from the team about who would have ended up with, the team appears to favor Sheldon as a candidate. Which... I find very problematic.
Sheldon stalked her, made her uncomfortable, and through the course of the series, lied to her, toyed with her emotions, and caused her much emotional grief. And yet, she’s supposed to apologize to Sheldon for being so “cruel” even though she was voicing some legitimate concerns about his conduct, and eventually end up with him as a boyfriend? Nuh-uh. No bueno. That’s not exactly something you should be teaching little girls. If she is uncomfortable being around him, she shouldn’t be obligated to hang out with him--- even if it hurts his feelings. And by remaining friends with him, she’s using him for upgrades her mother denies; stringing him along with the possibility of being “more than friends”; and overall, setting up an uncomfortable situation for both of them to be in. I don’t see how that’s okay to promote that kind of relationship to any kid. It’s just simple wish fulfillment and for a TV show that will be shown to children, that’s not okay. Keep it in your personal diary, or on your personal computer, because promoting this sort of relationship is extremely toxic and I don’t approve. At all.
Now... the infamous skin episode...
The basic problem of the episode is that Jenny wants to hang out at teenage hotspot called Mezmer’s. However, the owner of the shop won’t allow her in because she’s a robot. Remembering the freakish false skin that her mother designed her several episodes before, she attempts to reuse it after having received several upgrades to make it more believable. And it works! She becomes beautiful! More popular! She even gets to dance with Don Prima, the local heartthrob that Jenny has a crush on! Overall, she’s simply... normal. However, the second-skin seems to have a life of its own and puts itself on in Jenny’s sleep. It coaxes her to be more normal, to stop fighting crime, to focus on her beauty and her looks because that’s what a normal girl does. But once Brad becomes endangered by an intergalactic biker gang that threats destroy the shop, Jenny sheds her new skin and learns to accept herself for all her imperfections and unique personality traits. Because that’s what’s truly normal about her.
This episode was probably the most prominent that I remembered watching as a kid. And for a good reason too... This. Episode. Was. Horrifying! I’m not even kidding! Rewatching this as an adult, I kept thinking to myself “This is a children’s show?!?” One of the first interactions that we see with this new skin is that it claws its way up Jenny’s body while she shouts, “I can’t breathe!”
Tumblr media
Later on, we see the exoskin crawl its way across Jenny’s floor and attack her like a snake while she sleeps.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iJjJmGv6ztY
(The video is pretty poor quality, but it’s the only one I can find.)
What. The. Fuck.
Oh, but it’s alright because she sheds the skin in the end and everything returns to a relative normal.
Except for the fact that the ending implies that the skin takes another victim and survives. Yeah. IT’S A REAL THING.
The message that the episode taught was great. It’s a message that teenage girls really do need to hear: that you have your own normal and that trying to be others’ version of “normal” can end up changing who you really are and up taking away all of the cool, badass qualities that make you, well, you. The problem is that this episode is so terrifying how the hell do you show this to kids?!? The fact that I remembered this episode so vividly despite the fact that I haven’t seen this show since it aired is a testament to the fact that it I probably shouldn’t have watched it as a child. I just... I’m baffled on how this got made! It’s... just... *shivers.*
I mean, questionable episodes aside, the show itself was interesting. The visuals were certainly unique and interesting to watch. The character designs were so original and iconic that going back and watching the original cartoon short, it’s kind of crazy that they weren’t always like that. The soundtrack, sound effects, even some of the voice acting was enjoyable the listen to. As I said before, it has a very 50′s aesthetic with a futuristic twist, which gives it this odd balance between feeling dated but also surprisingly modern. The backgrounds appear to be hand-painted, which is probably the reason for its dated look; I think it was a rather nice touch. I honestly have to give it to the sound effects department for being so on top of the little noises and such for every little movement Jenny made. It really created a sense of life in the character and I really did appreciate it in the small moments. I will have to say though, going back and watching this series, it didn’t exactly age as well as I had hoped. There were some nice episodes that I enjoyed but many of the episodes I found were pretty mediocre at best. Maybe it’s simply because I’ve gotten older and many of the jokes/gags just weren’t funny anymore. Maybe it’s because the characters themselves were simply 2-dimensional at best and dealt with stereotypical teenage problems. I’m not sure but really, I just wasn’t amused. Now, maybe I just need to watch more of this series as it appears to be a bit of a slow burn but really I’m just not that hype to jump on rewatching it.
If I had to rate this show, I’d probably give it a 6.8 out of 10.
I’ll probably sit down and rewatch all of this at some point; after all, it seems decent enough. But really, if I never watch it again, I wouldn’t be too upset. It’s pretty much what I’d call “bubble gum TV;” if I want to turn on something mindless for a little while, I’d probably watch it but I wouldn’t be too invested. It’s just pretty... bland.
I think a lot of people have a bit of rose-tinted goggles when looking at this show and as such, it becomes kind of hard to criticize it. Does it deserve to be forgotten? Not necessarily. But I don’t think that it’s really as great as a lot of people think of it to be.
As for me, I’m gonna put this back in the shelves of my vault to watch one day. But when that day will be? We’ll just have to wait around and see what happens.
[Edit 11/21/118: I’m testing out a new tagging system. Let’s see if this fixes the broken links issues.]

Callie Reviews: TMNT 2012 Season One (Part One)
Tumblr media
Ever since 1984, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise has gone form a cult-status indie comic to a massive mass market. There have been various comics, movies, video games, merchandise, and of course cartoons. And it’s easy to see why. TMNT’s concept, a group of mutated teen turtles fighting evil in New York, is both incredibly bizarre and incredibly appealing to a mass audience. You have action, science fiction, martial arts, and of course plenty of mutant ideas to make toys out of. The fact that this Fall will be releasing the fourth animated TMNT series and that a new movie series is in production shows that even over 30 years later, this is a franchise that is far from losing it’s power.
As a kid, I of course knew that Turtles as a thing and I even watch parts of 2k3. But I was never really a fan until the day I stumbled upon the 2012 show. I fell in love with it and, since it started when I was just starting this blog, it was a huge focus for me for several years. I have since moved on and while I’m going to check out the 2018 show, I don’t think I’m going to be as crazy as I was with this show (but never say never). Back in 2012, I was someone who... lets say ignored the flaws and defended the show far too passive aggressively to the point that looking at my older stuff makes me want to blow up by blog.
Nowadays, while some of my opinions hold true (like the ‘Donnie is a stalker’ accusations are still bullshit), I am more willing to admit the shows problems, especially now that I can take the show in fully. I also like to believe that I’ve become a better reviewer since I was 19 years old, plus it had been far too long since I went back over the show form the very beginning. So does the show still hold up? Will 25 year old Callie feel differently than 19 year old Callie did? Well we’re about to find out. This is the TMNT 2012 Season One Review!
The Premiere (Episodes 1-2)
Tumblr media
Our story begins with a training sequence that introduces us to the titular Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Leonardo, Raphael, Donatello, and Michelangelo. Along with some minor character establishment, like Mikey being the funny one and Raph the violent one, the biggest thing here is one of the shows strengths: the choreography. It’s best exhibited in Leo and Raph’s duel. The movements are very fluid and well-paced. It’s fast, but not too fast, it’s enough to move things along but still let you take in all the impacts. It’s very well done. Raph ends up winning and we are introduce to the boys mentor and father, Master Splinter. Aka, the best written character int he show, but we’ll get to that later.
Tumblr media
After the opening theme, we cut to the boys 15th Mutation Day where we get our backstory. Borrowing from the 80′s show origin, Splinter was once a young man named Hamato Yoshi. He had just bought four pet turtles when he stumbled across a shady dealing. Being a ninja master, he was able to fight back, but he ended up getting splattered with a strange green substance. This turned him into a rat, as one brushed his ankle while the baby Turtles become anthropomorphic. Yoshi, taking on the name Splinter, fled to the sewers and raised the four turtles as his own as well as taught them ninjutsu. It’s a simple, but still solid telling of the origin that pays tribute to previous origins, leaves some mystery about the substance and who was dealing it, and is told with use of comic-style panels reminiscent of the original comics.
The Turtles, having lived in the sewers since their mutation, are hoping to convince Splinter to let them finally go to the surface. After some begging, Splinter reluctantly agrees. We then cut to Leo watching a Star Trek: The Animated Series parody where we learn of his desire to become a great hero and leader. This is interesting for several reasons. One, it establishes that Leo isn’t the leader of the group yet, a departure form normal as he’s normally put into that role automatically. And second, ti does a great job at character establishment. In previous versions, Leo is often seen as the boring, overly leader type. Not a bad character mind you, but he lacks the quirkiness that the tough Raph, genius Donnie, and wild child Mikey present. Here? Leo is shown to be an idealistic, naive, but good-intention kid who aspires to be a great hero like he sees on TV as well as give shim some dorky characteristics, like quoting cheesy one-liners to sound more heroic. It helps make him more relateable, funny, and sets up a character arc for when he does inevitably become the leader. Very well done.
Tumblr media
The boys finally go to the surface, and are in awe of what they see. They even discover their trademark favorite food, pizza. Given that they only ever ate worms and algae until this point, it makes their love of it all the more understandable. But not all goes well as they soon witness a group of business men kidnapping a red-haired teenager and her father. They attempt to help, but end up only beating each other up and the bad guys get away with their captives. Mikey ends up beating up one and discovers... a brain with tentacles... yipe... he tries to tell the other three, but they don’t believe him. A common trend in the show.
Tumblr media
Upon returning home, the boys try to blame each other for the failure before Splinter accepts it for not giving them proper training as a team. While he considers keeping them down below for another year, Donnie convinces him to let them go help the girl due to seeing how terrified she was and how they failed to help her... and because of the crush he developed in a record five seconds. Splinter agrees, but first assigns Leo as the official leader, much to the ire of Raph. They’re eventually able to find the kidnappers vehicle and wreck it, capturing the driver named Snake and they discover a vat of a glowing green substance. A vat that they recognize as the same one that caused their original mutation.
Snake, after Raph threatens to mutate him, leads the boys to the facility where the captives are... and uses the boys bickering as a chance to escape. Leo uses this to trick the crook into thinking that they’re going to plow his van into the place as he conducts a plan to sneak in. All while Roah is an asshole who refuses to listen and outright undermines Leo’s orders. Yeah, Raph is a real jerk during this season. FYI. When Leo shows hesitance about his plan, Splinter tells him of his final confrontation against his rival Oroku Saki, aka The Shredder. It ended in his wife being killed, his house burning down, and his infant daughter nowhere to be found. Well, that won’t be important in any way, shape, or form later! The point being that he lost everything, but gained the boys, easing Leo’s worries about how much is riding on the plan.
So yeah the boys crash the van, Snake gets mutated, the boys break in, fight some guards, and Mikey proves that he isn’t crazy about the aliens.. and then trips an alarm. Smooth Mikey, smooth. They find the captives, that being this version of April O’Neil and her scientist father. Now in most versions, April is an adult woman. Here? She is aged down and is around sixteen years old. We’ll talk more about that later. The bad guys, aka The Kraang, take the captives away and as the boys give chase,t hey are confronted by the mutant Snake... who is a weed monster. Hey, that’s breaking supervillain rules writers! If you have an evil sounding name, that’s what you turn into! Donnie is sent to rescue the O’Neil’s as the other three face Snakeweed... Mikey’s idea, not mine.
Tumblr media
The boys eventually defeat Snake via Leo’s direction and mass electrocution while Donnie is able to rescue April, but her father is taken away. April plans to find him however, no matter what it takes with the boys promising to help in whatever way they can. Once home, Leo finds out the complex reasoning for why he was named the leader over everyone else... because he asked. Ming-boggling, right? Well there is actually another reason, but we’ll talk about this in S4. The boys also made the news as their shruriken got found, but come on, what could one tiny news story do that would be bad? Well... being seen by your master’s worst enemy and re-igniting his lust for vengeance might count! Woopsie!
Overall, a solid two parter. It establishes the characters well, has fun fight scenes, the animation is a little dated now but still pretty good, the dialogue is funny, and it does a good job setting up future plotlines while fulfilling it’s own plot. It started 2k12 off on the right foot and was still enjoyable over five years since it’s initial premiere.
The Beginning (Episodes 3-8)
Tumblr media
The episodes following the premiere create a steady flow of creating the status quo. You have episodes like Turtle Temper, Metalhead, and Monkey Brains (kinda) that have the boys dealing with the Kraang’s Plan of the Week as they continue their mutagen experiments. It helps with character development and some minor plot progression, such as Raph learning how dangerous his anger can be and Donnie learning to rely on his instincts rather than on his mind 100% of the time. Some are going to want me to comment on the shipping stuff, But I’m gonna save that for later. The biggest issue with these episodes, aside from Monkey Brains, is the Kraang. They are not interesting as villains at all. As great a VA as Nolan North is, the Kraang’s way of talking just gets... annoying. It doesn't help that the threat ultimately becomes either an accidental mutant or Donnie’s robot... well okay a Kraang possessed the later, but it shows that those are more interesting villains than the Kraang themselves and they exist mroe to just have an excuse for a plot. It’s really irking after awhile.
Tumblr media
As far as plot goes, it’s mostly your usual ‘Monster of the Week’ stuff. But it has some small things that have a larger impact later. For one, in Monkey Brains, April begins to tap into what looks like some strong emphatic abilities. More on this next season. But due to this, Splinter decides to take April on as a student and train her to be a kunoichi (a female ninja). This will be the largest part of her character for the remainder of the series. April herself... is not utilized as well as she could have been in these early episodes. She’s described as the boys guide to the outside world, and she does serve that in some respects. For example, introducing Mikey to social media in New Friend, Old Enemy to let him make friends without exposing his mutant identity. And in Never Say Xever she takes them to a blind man’s shop so that they can actually experience life topside for once. The issue is we never see April establish bonds with the boys or Splinter after her introduction. In New Friend, Old Enemy she just acts like she’s been friends with the guys for awhile and after showing Mikey the net, doesn’t appear or is even mentioned in the episode again. She disappears after her importance in Metalhead as well, but she is given mroe to work with there at least. I glossed over this when I was watching the show and April does get mroe time with the guys, her relationship with Splinter being one of my favorites. Still, they didn’t do a lot with having April become part of the group or really act on her role as their ‘guide’ and I feel they just wanted to ignore it to get to the other stuff. Which is just a bummer.
Tumblr media
So you’re probably wondering about Shredder stuff, right? Well thankfully the Foot Episodes are also the most plot relevant episodes. It starts with New Friend, Old Enemy where Shredder arrives in New York and assigns one of his lieutenants, a famous martial artist named Chris Bradford, to find out about Splinter. The Foot end up encountering the Turtles, with Bradford later using this to manipulate Mikey after accidentally becoming online friends with him. He captures him and use shim as bait to lure out the other three and then follow them to where Splinter is hiding. It fails with the boys using their knowledge of the sewers to literally wash Bradford and his partner, Xever, away. Along with the dangers of meeting people you don’t really know on social media, the episode presents a very unique lesson. In a fight for your life, screw fairness, You fight by any means necessary to stay alive, including fighting dirty. Most shows emphasize on being fair, but this one actually acknowledges that if your life is on the line, you do what it takes to get out alive. It’s a unique message for a kids show and one that I really appreciate.
Tumblr media
Next is Never Say Xever where Xever gets to lead the charge. After the boys track down the two and get beat up, Xever receives inlet from the Purple Dragons, who int his version are pretty much a trio of teen thugs. The Turtles fought them off earlier at the shop April took them to, with Leo sparing the leader as an act of mercy. Something that Raph takes umbridge with... as he does with most anything that Leo does in the first half of the series. It’s no surprise that Leo and Raph butt heads, as they do in most series, and it follows their respective arcs. Leo having to deal with being leader as well as realizing that it’s much more pressuring and unforgiving than he thought, while Raph act son his jealousy that Leo got the position even though he’s the better fighter and therefore questioning Leo’s orders or outright just being an asshole for no good reason. But after the shop owner is kidnapped to lure the Turtles out, Leo’s act of mercy ends up saving them as the lead Dragon repays the favor by throwing him back his discarded sword. Which Leo uses to break a water tower to wash the bad guys away again. Angered, The Shredder decides to handle the Turtles himself.
The episodes do a good job in establishing a solid status quo. Bad guy does a thing, one character has their B-Plot to deal with, there’s a clash, the plots intertwine, bad guy gets defeated, and the lesson of the day is learned. A simple routine, but it works here. Plus we get plenty of character establishment and moments which makes you care about them. For example even though Raph is a massive jerk, the end of New Friend, Old Enemy has his comfort Mikey after the deceit and have him see that he’s a good kid who simply got duped as anyone else would. With this being after Raph mocked him wanting to make friends throughout the episode, it helped show that he does have a caring side. Leo frequently has issues with being a leader, such as dealing with Raph and moments like in ITHNiBS where the guys outright refuse to listen to him when he tries to remind them that they’re grounded. Even Splinter has a lot of moments, being a stern but fair parental figure and wise mentor, but is also snarky as Hell. We also see hints to how much the past has affected him, like after April agrees to undergo kunoichi training and leaves the dojo, there’s just a brief moment where he looks down with a forlorn expression. As though wishing that he was telling this to his own MIA daughter. It’s so subtle, but it speaks volumes about his emotional state.
The characters are ultimately what makes these episodes works and what I would say is the strongest part of the series. You are likely going to relate to or like someone from this show and their progression. But now that we have a fully formed status quo, it’s time to shake it up a little bit and have the Turtles experience their first hard dose of reality.
The Escalation (Epsidoes 9-13)
Tumblr media
Episode 9 begins as a typical ‘Mutant of the Week’ plot with the guys trying to catch a pigeon mutant that was after April. But when they do, they discover that he was simply trying to deliver a message... from her father. The message warns her to get out of the city due to a mutagen bomb, but she refuses to leave without him. As such,t he Turtles... somehow... find where Mr. O’Neil is and try to save him. While they get him out of the cell and get the location of the bomb, Mr. O’Neil sacrifices himself when the Kraang outnumber them so that the boys can protect April. All while poor April can only watch, helpless to do anything. Ouch...
Tumblr media
The Turtles can only go to where the bomb is to disarm it, but things get further complicated when Bradford and Xever attack, wanting payback from before. Fortunately Donnie disarms the bomb and the four corner the two, but Bradford refuse sot go down quietly and stabs the bomb, but all it does is mutate himself and Xever. But ti also washes them away.... again. I should also point out that this point,t he Turtles have gotten incredibly over-confident since they’ve beaten every bad guy so far, feeling unstoppable. So then... Shredder arrives. Yep. And he kicks their shells HARD. Liek he holds no punches, he easily over-powers all four of them and almost stabs Leo int he head. The only reason that they escape is Shredder getting distracted by his now mutated lieutenants. But the boys retreat, badly beaten up and completely demoralized.
Tumblr media
The next episode focuses on the fallout. The four are mostly feeling better, but their fears are being escalated by, of all people, Splinter. This is due to the boys nearly getting killed by his long-time rival re-igniting his own trauma and having nightmares over losing them, causing him to again keep them in the sewers and be far more harsh with his training. The only one doing moderately well is April, who gets intel about the Foot planning to destroy the sewers. The Turtles try to stop it, but get pounded by Bradford, who is now a giant dog mutant named Dogpound. This forces April to get the inlet herself, but she gets caught an captured by the Foot. This further brings Leo down, but to his surprise Raph actually encourages him to pull himself together and lead the team. The Turtles manage to both save April and stop the Foot from destroying the sewers with Splinter apologizing for allowing his fears to affect both himself and his sons. Overall, a solid pair of episodes that bring the boys down a bit, finally has all the plots meet somewhere, and deliver a strong message about not letting fear control you or the others around you.
Tumblr media
After a filler episode where the only importance is Shredder forcibly recruiting Stockman to his forces, we get some more Kraang stuff with Episode 12. Where we actually show them being dangerous. Shocker, right?! It also introduces us to long-time supporting character within the franchise  Leatherhead. Here he is an alligator mutant who the Kraang experimented on and it causes him to have violent fits of rage if he so much as hears the word ‘Kraang’. The Turtles end up saving him when the Kraang try to re-capture him, but find his angry bursts, well... dangerous. But Mikey is able to befriend him and it becomes more clear that LH is actually a rather intelligent, good-hearted mutant who has been put through Hell. He gets run off by Splinter though when one of his trauma-induced bursts causes him to attack the boys, forcing the rat master to intervene. Mikey, and by proxy the other three, give chase to an old subway car where LH reveals how the Kraang took him to their home, Dimension X, and experimented on him. He escaped and also took their Power Cell, cutting them off form Dimension X, in hopes of saving humanity from them. The Kraang want it back and act like a zombie swarm as they break through the car. LH fights them off, leaving the Power Cell in the Turtles care.
While Episode 11 sucks (to put it simply Leo and Raph are overbearing assholes while Donnie and Mikey are just made to be as weak as possible), the other three do a good job at making the villains more solid threats. Shredder was built up as intimidating and powerful, and boy did he deliver. The Turtles face their first major loss and have to deal with the fallout, Leo especially dealing with his first real failure as a leader. Even the Kraang come off as a scarier hivemind and we get mroe stuff on them, like Dimension X and their plans to mutate the Earth. Add that with a strong supporting character like Leatherhead, who is understandably traumatized but is an intelligent being who is trying to prevent others form suffering like him. and it helps make some strong episodes.
The first half of the season concludes with the 13th episodes... that aired as the 14th for some reason. But I’m going in order of my DVD’s and this was after Episode 12, so it’s what I’m going with. It both concludes a lot and opens up a lot for the future. The episode I am talking about is, of course New Girl in Town.

Birth Of a Liar Part Five
||Part One||Part Two||Part Three||Part Four||Part Five||
Final part, might make an epilogue too. Will contain spoilers. Also second best boy is in this, guess who it is (it’s Kiibo)
Trigger Warnings: Implied Torture, memory manipulation.
Darkness... ...quiet cold darkness. Kokichi had no idea where he was or what he was even doing here in the first place. First those weird grey guys capture him, then put him to sleep, and now he was just in and out of consciousness, only hearing faint sounds of voices around him.
“All systems go, checking the reaction to physical stimuli...”
He feels a slight pinch in his leg making him twitch what he believed to be his foot. There were sounds of someone writing something with a pen on a piece of paper before three beeps. “Left leg is a success. Now try left arm, raise the pain stimuli a little.” Whoever it was raising the stimuli or whatever must have raised it too high since it felt like his arm was on fire! He yelped and screamed, opening his eyes to total darkness while still hearing whoever that was with the pen scribbling down more things.
“Pain stimuli a success. Going to right leg now...”
Whatever the hell “stimuli” meant he didn’t like it. He felt real hot out of no where, then real cold, then really comfortable to really uncomfortable, it was not a fun experience. He could even hear himself screaming! It was a nightmare! Maybe he’ll wake up from it soon...
The sounds slowly faded away and now it was only back to darkness. He could feel something cold and metal as he leaned back. Was he standing? Wait...he could move again and his body felt completely fine even after the whole stimuli thing. Kokichi leaned forward a little bit to feel even more cold steel in front of him, only this time he could see a few bars of light in front of him. Freedom? With all his weight he rammed forward on the steel only to fall forward and end up on the grassy ground. At least there was light now...was he outside? This was definitely grass he fell in. Upon closer inspection it turned out it was...the inside of an abandoned school?
Being the inquisitive teen he was, Kokichi got up and started looking around for a way out and some sort of weapon for protection. Man if only he had his bat then no one would even be able to come near him. Though still he wasn’t going to kill them but...he didn’t want to be killed himself! Maybe he could knock them out then run away? That’s when he saw another locker. It seemed to still be closed but if the locker he was in was so easy to open then this one must be too. Perhaps there was something in here he could use to knock someone out with if they threaten him. Kokichi wiggled the handle a few times trying to open it. A metallic squeak and a sudden bang was heard. Good news: he opened the locker. Bad news: there was something pushing on the other side! Curse having such a small body! Whatever it was had opened the locker door entirely before landing on him, causing Kokichi to lose the air out of his lungs like a deflated balloon.
What the hell did they put in this locker? A steamroller? However as he opens his eyes and finally processes the figure on top of him, it was human shaped. In fact it was very human shaped. Pale skin, silvery shiny white hair, a hat placed atop it’s head, and what seemed to be really a normal school uniform. Though shoot was he heavy! And he was so skinny too! How??
Soon enough the being’s blue eyes began to...glow? Wait a moment...was this guy even a human? Whatever he was he finally noticed Kokichi and BEGAN SCREAMING! This also startled the leader who scoots backwards and tries to hide back in the locker. There was a reason he was so heavy! He was a killer robot!
The robot blinked for a few moments and looks around the room slowly, catching his breath. Wait could robots even breathe? Finally his shiny blue eyes meet with Kokichi’s frightened ones. He gives a relieved sigh.
“You’re a high school student exactly like me, correct?” The robot finally asks giving a friendly smile. Kokichi just nods. Just give the robot what he wanted and maybe he will let you out of this place. Standing up suddenly, the other walked up to the cowering boy and offered a hand. “There is no need to be afraid. I was captured as well.” Kokichi just examines the hand in front of him hesitantly. They apparently wore gloves as well. Maybe it wasn’t warranted, and maybe it was a bit rude, but instead of his hand, he takes off the glove to inspect underneath. Wires, metal, screws and bolts. That means he really was-
Tumblr media
“R-R-ROBOT!” the teen exclaims as he tries his best to hide back in the locker again. All the robot did was shush him angrily and look around. “Shh! Not so loud please! And do not touch my glove without permission!” The robot lectures placing the glove back on his robot arm. His angered features get a bit softer as if he was empathizing with the scared boy. “Anyway, since we have both ended up in the same situation, the best course of action would be for us to stick together. My name is K1-b0. But please, call me Kiibo. I am indeed a robot but I was created to learn and act like a human. I want to keep my true identity a secret so I can fit in a bit more with others.”
That sounded like something out of a cartoon...a robot going to school with humans to learn how to be like them. However Kiibo didn’t seem like an evil robot so maybe he should trust him? Actually now that he thought about it, having a robot best friend would be the coolest thing ever! Kokichi would steal movies about robots or watch anime about fighting robots all the time. They were so cool! For a second or two you could almost see the sparks of excitement and the glittering of Kokichi’s eyes. He had so much to ask him!
Tumblr media
Without even taking his hand Kokichi instead moves in front of Kiibo’s face, his hands in front of him excitedly. “That’s so cool! I always wanted to meet a robot! Hey, I got a few questions if you don’t mind? Do robots sleep? Do robots eat? Do they go to the bathroom? Do they have d-”
KABOOM! In came a gigantic robotic creature! Well it wouldn’t be so bad if it was a robot like Kiibo but this thing looked like something out of Star Wars! The boys stare at it in horror before Kiibo quickly took a hold of Kokichi’s hand. “Hurry! We have to run!”
He didn’t have to tell him twice! He’s dashing right behind the robot, doing his best to outrun whatever it was that was on their trail. But wait...Kiibo’s a robot, right?
“Why don’t you use your rocket powered jet-pack feet and shoot it in the head with your lazer?” Kokichi questioned between breaths. The robot looks a bit embarassed and turns away. “I don’t have those...but I will protect you to the best of my ability.” Kokichi looks shocked and appalled by this revelation, his nose turning up slightly in disgust. “Who creates a robot and makes them not able to figh-EEK!” The gigantic metal machine had almost stepped on him if it wasn’t for Kiibo slightly pulling Kokichi’s arm to make him lean forward. Okay, that was a pretty good trick. “You were saying...?”
The hallway to this school was like a maze! It was as if they were going around in circles! At the end of one hallway there seemed to be a large door that could lead to a gymnasium or something along those lines. Kokichi pulls forward this time leading them to the place. Oddly enough Kiibo wasn’t so heavy to pull than he was to pick up off of you. Upon reaching the safe zone the boys closed the door behind them before collapsing onto the polished wooden floor. It took them a minute to catch their breath but once they finally did they began laughing. That was a close one but...it was rather fun! It reminded Kokichi of his DICE days.
“Oh that’s right. I didn’t ask you what your name was. I apologize.” Kiibo states with a polite bow. For a robot he could move as swiftly as a human could. That was really impressive. “May I ask who you are?”
Honestly he didn’t know whether to be honest with the robot or not, but he did save his life from being a pancake so he did owe him at least that much. “Uh...Kokichi Ouma...of Tokyo Japan.” Kiibo’s eyes widened for a moment. “My databases say that you had disappeared for years and somehow ended up running your own orphanage! That is very humble and amazing of you. You must be a very good person.” Oh man, that was too many compliments in one sentence. His face got flushed immediately.
Tumblr media
“It wasn’t just an orphanage, it was an evil organization! We caused trouble and stole things, and once held the mayor hostage for ransom money!” He didn’t like his organization being known as some sort of orphanage, it was a lot more cooler to call it an evil organization...just like Maki once said. “Oh. My mistake.” Kiibo apologies again softly. Though as Kokichi looked up, his eyes met a dark haired girl with red eyes and her hair pulled into pigtails that ran down her back. It couldn’t be... “Maki?”
She was a lot older than when they last met but this girl was indeed Maki. “Hold on, Kiiboy I’ll be right back.” He tries to say hello to her before she looks away. She didn’t want to even look at him. “Maki come on, we haven’t seen each other for years and you’ve already forgotten me?”
She says nothing, just glancing at the wooden floor. “I haven’t forgotten about you, Kokichi...” Maki replies in a dull voice. “Then why won’t you talk to me?”
Finally Maki turns around, tears starting to form slowly. “Because I want nothing to do with you anymore...because of your stupid idea, my brothers found me and brought me and Goro back home! People know me as a murderer there, I can’t even get one friend!” Kokichi looks sadly at her, starting to feel guilt. “But what about Hana? Is she okay?” Maki’s tears began to roll down her face. “She’s in an orphanage. I want to adopt her but I’m too young and Goro’s in collage and is already knee deep in debt! That’s why I signed up for Daganronpa! I could use the money to bring Hanako back!” Kokichi looks to the ground for a moment in sadness. He didn’t want Hanako to get taken...he didn’t want Maki and Goro to go back to that family. They were a family. They were DICE! They were supposed to stick together through thick and thin.
“I’m already known as a murderer so...even if I kill it won’t make a difference.” Those words hit Kokichi like a bow’s arrow to the chest. “But DICE doesn’t kill-”
“I’m not a part of your stupid club anymore, Kokichi. You don’t think out plans, you just boss people around and hope they listen to you. You need to stop only thinking of the end result and instead of what the consequences are. You can do as you wish but leave me out of it...”
“Hey is this guy bothering you?” A tall guy with pinkish purple hair asked Maki, coming out of nowhere and cracking his knuckles. Maki looks back at Kokichi for a second before turning back to the man. “No. I was just leaving.” Kokichi watched sadly as the two went to another part of the gymnasium, the tall guy comforting Maki softly. She was right...it was all his fault...all his fault that DICE is split up...all his fault that they were forced into orphanages, all his fault Maki couldn’t see Hanako anymore. He could already fill the tears well up in his eyes. Suddenly a gloved hand had touched Kokichi’s shoulder making him jump a bit. “Was that the human ritual that they call a ‘brake-up’? My databases say that’s very hard for a human heart. I offer my greatest sympathies.” He doesn’t say anything for a second before he glares at Maki angrily. “As if I’d ever be with a vampire looking murder girl.”
“I-Is...that a yes or a no?”
Robots apparently don’t understand sarcasm.
Soon enough more people had found there way into this gym. He didn’t have time to introduce himself to them and honestly? The guilt and the worry of everything happening at once made him feel uneasy. Right now he’d rather be in that dark place he was with the stimuli than here. Soon the last two had come in, a girl and boy, before more shaking and rattling. He hated it here...but he was still a leader. Maybe he could find a way out of here with everyone in tow.
Apparently those giant robots were piloted by these odd little bear cub things, each with a different voice and personality. They also confirmed his suspicion. He was chosen for the games after all. A wave of fear had hit him but he tries not to show it. If he was in the killing game he was going to make sure everyone gets out alive no matter what. Soon they threw some close everywhere and told everyone to get changed. Kokichi blushes a tiny bit. Get undressed? In front of all these girls? And then THEY’D get undressed in front of him? Not for a perverted reason, but he looks around to see if everyone else was going to a dressing room or something. Oddly...they weren’t. The girl that came in last was in the sky getting a Sailor Moon styled transformation sequence, Kiibo had this weird Voltron like sequence, and that girl with the red hair that doesn’t even look like a high schooler had this sort of Tokyo Mew Mew vibe. Don’t ask him how he knows so much, he DID watch anime with the others in DICE you know.
So he cautiously walks to the only clothes left, a white suit with mixed matched buttons and a checkered scarf complete with boots. He had to admit, it was his style. In fact it suited him to a tee. It even matched with DICE too. Holding out a hand to pick it up, he was suddenly engulfed by a purple light. Fair organ music filled his ears as he watches himself get dressed without even moving a single finger. It was odd...he felt like a character in a video game when you change their look and they automatically look that way without doing a thing. He lands perfectly on his feet, everyone looking different than they did before. And now that bear said they were going to give their ultimates? What did that mean? Oooh like in the show when the characters have tale-
Suddenly light had flashed in his eyes! His brain felt dizzy, his stomach feeling woozy.
Whatever happens you will NOT kill! Whatever happens you will NOT kill! Whatever happens you will NOT kill!
The light continued to shine, he could feel everything he knows in his life flashing before his eyes, like a PowerPoint of every single thing he’s ever experienced. It hurt for a second, until he was engulfed in darkness once again. What on earth happened? This wasn’t...right? Well one thing is for sure he might as well try to think of who he is...
.... ................... ...................................................... ..................................................................
My name is Kokichi Ouma, the ultimate supreme leader!  I lead an evil organization of ten...no...over a thousand people! And it’s known throughout the world! I’m also a liar. .... ................... ...................................................... .................................................................. And no MATTER WHAT, I will not kill a soul.

MARVEL Headcanon
so I’ve been mulling this over and imagine when Peter Quill and Steve Roger meet:
Both are “men out of time"
Peter=30 years
Steve=70+ years
so both are confused little old beans in an entirely new societ/world
Peter’s devastation when he finds out all of his favorite old musicians have passed away - Michael Jackson and David Bowie especially
Steve is Peter’s guide as the former has had time to get used to this new era
Peter being his usual self, even though deep down he’s freaking the f out
Peter being in absolute awe that he’s in New York City, it’s always been his childhood wish to visit the Big Apple. The alien guardians are amazed at Earth in general
Even though they try to accept new things, both continuously have those heavy feelings in their guts they missed out on multiple eras; who wouldn’t feel weird??
Both console in each other over this "feeling”
And to lose the angst - Dear Marvel, we need Chris x Chris to happen bro wise, not romantically
fingers crossed for Infinity War
Of course with the help of the Avengers, both learn to become properly acquainted with today’s crazy times
Peter helps Steve with the 80’s as he still has all the cool retro shiz stored in the Milano
Troll Dolls™
Walkman Mix Tape Jams™
Full House marathons because Peter no doubt has a man crush on Uncle Jesse
Footloose-athon for both the Cap and Gamora.
“See there’s no sticks up their butts.” -P
 "What???“ -S
Movie and TV-athon’s for nostalgia and intellectual purposes
Nirvana ✓
Star Wars  ✓
Marvin Gaye’s "Trouble Man" ✓
Now let’s get metal papa in on the mix!
basically everything above^^
Our angsty robotic cinnamon roll has been around for all the generations, but he couldn’t experience them as he was too busy smashing heads and shootin guns
So when Peter comes into the mix and insists on showing our super soldiers life through the times he’s vv eager
He wants to know the big deal about parachute pants, tie-dye everything, fanny packs, and the mullets and perms
Basically Peter is the 80’s professor, while Steve and Bucky are his eager students
Tony would like to help in the lessons, as he was a teen in the 80’s, but everything fell apart after Civil War - so Peter is now called Professor Peter Quill
nobody calls him this
Our three boys making pillow and blanket forts to watch their marathons
Basically, Peter genuinely wants to help these large cinnabuns with what they missed out on throughout the years which means: TV, music, and movie marathons from throughout the ages - the whole nine yards!
"Tom and Jerry”. Steve and Bucky’s homage to their childhood. Any classic cartoon is on their list tbh
“I Love Lucy”.
Fight me on this (ง •̀_•́)ง
"The Twilight Zone". Steve and Peter quiver in their blankets at the thrill, while Bucky just munches on popcorn
"Wonder Woman". Because Linda Carter is fiiinnnneee
“Happy Days”. Because it’s a classic
“ALF” and “Mork and Mindy.” Because aliens.
Peter finds it hilarious how off the writers were of alien life forms and behaviors.
“Peter, no one knows aliens exist.” “There’s a mantis girl and a tree man in the next room. And we’re gonna be fighting an evil, giant eggplant - you really wanna have this debate?”
Anndddd finallyyy “Golden Girls”?? Anybody on board with this??
And I think my heart just died for these boys

There I was on an ordinary Monday afternoon minding my own business and ignoring Teen Titans GO! on my television when suddenly a promotion for OK K.O.! Let’s Be Heroes interrupted me from my trance. I remembered a time when pitched pilot episodes for Cartoon Network shows were being leaked all over YouTube. It was then, about four years ago, that I first started rooting for this little show that combined video games, anime, and 80s style dialogue. Originally titled Lakewood Plaza Turbo, OK K.O.! Let’s Be Heroes is finally making its run on Cartoon Network and after seeing a few episodes, “I am Dendy” in particular, I’ve deduced that this might be one of the purest shows ever to exist.
The animation of O.K. K.O.! Let’s Be Heroes can be described as “great for what it’s trying to accomplish.” It’s not super fantastic animation, but it’s not cheap either. It found a happy medium. There was one fake fight scene that showed off the potential way the show’s animation would portray a fight scene should any serious story arcs start to manifest. The opening was storyboarded by Hiroyuki Imaishi who is one of the co-founders of Studio Trigger, an animation studio you should all know and love, and his influence is felt in every single frame.
youtube
Let’s talk about the story because THIS SHIT RIGHT HERE HAS SO MUCH POTENTIAL. As far as I can tell the story goes a little something like this: The year is 201X. A boy named K.O. has a mom who was a great hero back in the day (and still is in the present). She’s a level 11 hero, which may be the highest hero rank in the show. Oh yeah, this show has hero ranks so you know it’s gonna get good. Carol, K.O.’s mom, has a fitness dojo in Lakewood Plaza right next to Mr. Gar’s shop. Mr. Gar is a Mike Haggar-type character with a hero rank of 11 as well. He gets all flustered whenever Carol is next to him; it’s kind of cute.
K.O. desperately wants to be a hero so he uses his mom’s super-ultra credit card to buy a bunch of crime fighting gear from the shop as a birthday gift for himself. He tries and fails to defeat a villain with his new gear and after Mr. Gar straight up PERFORMS A PEOPLE’S ELBOW FROM THE HEAVENS to defeat the villain, K.O. realizes that the only way he can become a hero is to work at Mr. Gar’s shop and learn from him and his employees.
Tumblr media
The employees I’m referring to are, Radicles, who is an alien with a hero level of 2 and can move things with pink telekinesis and Enid, who is a kunoichi with so much sarcasm it puts her at a hero level of 3. Both of these characters are great, and they’re the exact opposite of each other which makes for some fantastic character interactions. The main villain is Lord Boxman who literally has an evil lair across the street. Lord Boxman is a mixture of Dr. Robotnik from Sonic the Hedgehog and Dr. Wily from Megaman because he creates robot masters. Get this though. GET THIS! Lord Boxman is voiced by JIM CUMMINGS! DA GAWD OF CARTOON VOICE ACTING. His voice brings the character to a new level. The other side characters are pretty amazing as well. Did I mention K.O. is sometimes voiced by Stephanie Nadolny, who voiced kid Goku and Gohan in Dragonball and Dragonball Z? Cause he is and it’s glorious.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now let’s get to the episode that got me hooked, “I am Dendy”. This episode is the epitome of why this show is a purity punch right in the mouth. The episode centers around K.O. and a girl named Dendy (tell me that isn’t a sly Dende name reference) who sits behind him in his class. Dendy needs help from K.O. when she’s trying to find parts to fix her high tech backpack. Throughout the episode, Dendy is shown as a weird girl who doesn’t really care about others while she’s trying to find the parts to repair her backpack and K.O. tries to show her that she should think about others while she’s accomplishing her goal.
There’s a part where they need a token at an arcade and K.O. looks in his pockets, with no money in them, and moths fly out and he yells “OH NO! MY MOTH COLLECTION” and I lost it. Anyway, there are hints that Dendy might be a robot or that she might be secretly evil and there’s a scene where K.O. gets eaten by a robot and she just collects data to increase the suspicions of her evilness even more.
It turns out Dendy’s backpack was never broken and she just made the problem up to spend some time with K.O. but she was too shy and awkward to just ask him. The episode ends with Dendy writing in her notebook where she jotted down all the data on K.O. and next to his acquaintances she puts herself as a friend and IT’S SO PRECIOUS. The episode plays with how characters like her are usually written. Most of the time they actually are secretly evil, and the episode truly shows that you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover or a stereotype by …well the character’s stereotype. The ending of that episode made my heart grow ten sizes that night and I’ve vowed to spread the gospel of K.O. because of it.

spring anime 2017 part 2: girlfriendship is magic
Tumblr media
I can’t believe Maidragon was so powerful it brought the entire 90s back.
See also:
• spring anime 2017 part 1: woke up late
• spring anime 2017 part 3: comfy and easy to wear
• spring anime 2017 bonus round: things you already knew were good
Clockwork Planet
Tumblr media
Yes, forecasts this season predict heavy showers of magical girlfriends. This time the dude afflicted by this sudden precipitation is a clockwork nerd, who gets a clockwork gothloli dropped on him. This may be less of a coincidence than it sounds because for spurious reasons the entire planet has been replaced by clockwork – if you thought this show was mentally capable of having a metaphorical title, I have bad news. So basically this is teen schmuck + robot superweapon having fights in a city that looks like a lazy steampunk cosplayer’s top hat, in between erotic misunderstandings. I’m regretting that I called Macchiavellism’s fights bad because a couple good action cuts are already a lot to ask for, as evidenced here: It looks just terrible, and obviously the content itself is even worse. Nuh-uh.
Eromanga-sensei
Tumblr media
I love Hiro Kanzaki’s character designs. There, I said it. I just wish they weren’t attached to bullshit like OreImo or Eromanga-sensei, which, being by the same author and all, is more or less the same thing. It’s pretty bad when the implied incest fantasy is the least revolting thing about your celebration of otaku shittery: So a schlubby light novel protagonist who also writes light novels (and who happens to be surrounded by hot bitches that just love people who write light novels because that’s so cool) finds out that the mysterious porn artist he’s collaborating with over the internet is actually his hikkikomori little sister, who reacts to this revelation like any girl would: being tsundere. This means it’s full of mildly self-deprecating nerd humor, the infuriating kind that makes it abundantly clear that if the author meant any of it, he wouldn’t write this crap. Even worse is that the sibling relationship is played for sappy family feels, which I would be more willing to give the benefit of the doubt to if this wasn’t OreImo 2: The Sequel To OreImo. And the main guy can’t keep his eyes from wandering anyway, so it’s not like there’s a mystery here. I’ll say it looks real good, obviously there’s money in the OreImo market and it’s well made as a result, plus the aforementioned character designs. But if I want more Hiro Kanzaki I’d rather watch Go! Go! 575 again.
Hinako Note
Tumblr media
There’s actually no Manga Time Kirara adaptation this season, but worry not, Hinako Note is indistinguishable from one of those (that one being GochiUsa). So it’s Kirara at it’s most basic too: 5 girls with mild, generic quirks hang out and cute things take place. You get your shy one, you get your hungry one, you get your tiny maid one, etc. Ostensibly this is theater-themed, but as of episode 1 it’s less about theater than K-ON is about music, and that’s saying something. Now, these shows are always extremely inoffensive by design, and if they do nothing fundamentally wrong they just come across as dull. Since this does nothing fundamentally wrong, it just comes across as dull. Congratulations, Hinako Note, you pulled it off even while being born in the wrong magazine.
Kabukibu!
Tumblr media
The easy hook when writing about Kabukibu is that it’s another DEEN show about a classic Japanese performance artform, but it’s blindingly obvious right away that Kabukibu is no Rakugo Shinjuu – it being about a school club is right in the title after all, and it has the requisite spurious punctuation too, so everything else falls into place from there. The main innovation is that this is about cute guys doing cute kabuki. As always, our main dude has to gather the five members to bring the school club back to life first. So it’s unimaginative and honestly rather bad, but I still like it. For starters there’s the bit where our lead is such a nerd that he spends every conversation clearing up common misconceptions about kabuki, which is hilarious, since it resembles weeaboo Richard Stallman wanting to interject for a second over and over again. Secondly, the comical cast of misfits does seem to have potential, with a rock singer that can’t sing, an obvious woman that is actually a woman, and so on. Overall it reminds me of Cheer Danshi, an obvious C-list production that gets by by being earnest. If I can learn to not be annoyed at the yodelling kabuki inflection, I might actually watch this for a lark.
The King’s Avatar
Tumblr media
This may be completely outside the “Japanese cartoon” purview of this post since it’s 100% Chinese and doesn’t even have a Japanese dub like the Haoliners productions, but it’s on MAL so it counts I suppose. Also, it’s rather... good? The King’s Avatar is about a legendary MMO pro gamer who gets kicked off his team and has to give up his account, which afflicts him with a multitude of sads. After a bit of soul-searching he starts playing the game again on a new server, starting from level 1. What makes this not as bad as it sounds is that it’s not an isekai bonanza, but a sports show where the sport happens to be visually interesting, and it’s a slow and contemplative sports show at that. The whole “starting from level 1" thing is a topical twist on the sports comeback story, and it looks fairly nice too, a few bits of unfortunate CG aside (but that’s common, so whatever). Yeah, I like this, and if fansubs turn out to not be a huge hassle to get hold of I’ll give it a try.
Love Kome - We Love Rice
Tumblr media
Back in Japan, please enjoy this short comedy about rice crop gijinka, boyband edition. It has atrocious character designs and is painfully unfunny. So nothing new there.
Re:Creators
Tumblr media
Girlfriends keep falling in my lap, and that might mean my eyes will soon be turning red. Hey, this is the old “reverse isekai”, where some nerd gets to live with a bunch of characters from his favorite anime that inexplicably became real. Brace for domestic hijinks and fish-out-of-water comedy - and a lot of action, because this is Ei Aoki working with offbrand Fate material. He may be this show’s saving grace, because I’m willing to forgive dumb action anime a lot if it at least manages to have some actual fucking action in it. The idea that these anime characters think they’re in the “realm of the gods” (i.e., their creators, you see) also has some storytelling potential, if it doesn’t get buried under stuff blowing up and comedic trips to the konbini. And it doesn’t have a “walking in on the girl naked” scene, which probably counts as “classy” in this field. I don’t know, it sure is stupid as hell but it might be a good time. We’ll see.
Renai Boukun
Tumblr media
Renai Boukun is a comedy’s comedy about a very silly cupid that ships people, and herself. As a real anime comedy, it is of course chock full of people acting wacky followed by reaction faces, which is my kryptonite. I do have to admit that this show at least goes all out with it, it’s fast and furious and never lets up. Some of the jokes are even okay (mostly the more absurd ones like the unsettlingly bizarre cat with a human face), though most are just repetitive, like the yandere girl being constantly jealous. Yeah, this is just totally not my thing, but if I give it any amount of praise that probably means it’s a good one?
Seikaisuru Kado
Tumblr media
Never say that bureaucrats don’t get no respect, because this is the second season in a row where we get an anime about pencilpushers being totally awesome. The main difference between this and ACCA is that ACCA was roughly 80% style, and Seikaisuru Kado has no style. It makes up for it with conviction, because this is a show where some desk jockey assigned to wind down an electroplating business spends a night googling, with the result being him developing a new electroplating procedure that saves the company and impresses physics professors – and that is the intro before the science fiction aspect comes into play. Oh yeah, there’s a science fiction aspect. So after a job well done, Super Bureaucrat Man is taking a flight from Haneda airport when a Borg cube unceremoniously drops on the plane. The rest of the episode is spent with scientists trying to figure out what happened, mostly by shooting tank shells at the cube and so on. Guess they just aren’t bureaucratic enough, because by the end our hero emerges from the cube, having apparently come to an agreement with the proprietor. Uh. Yes, this is an extreme amount of nonsense, and I have no idea where this is supposed to be going. With the amount of military hardware on display, it makes me think “GATE, but not for total assholes”, but who knows. It looks very weird too, it’s a CG show that cuts a lot of corners by using 2D animation (I know, right?). Usually CG characters are good when you have a lot of action because it enables a fluid camera, but this has no action and they still could have done their special effects in CG like everyone else. So it ends up as an anime where the important characters look worse than the unimportant ones they couldn’t be bothered to build a CG model for. The whole thing is bizarre enough to be intriguing, but I don’t have high hopes for it, especially since the slots for shows I actually want to watch are now filling up.
Tsuki ga Kirei
Tumblr media
Case in point: Tsuki ga Kirei is a romance about a bookish nerd dude who loves to quote Dazai at his most morose, and a neurotic girl. Needless to say, it is very awkward, but also kind of cute. This may seem like a slim synopsis, but that’s pretty much it: Tsuki ga Kirei is the sort of show that has the potential to be great if it pays off, but just becomes boring to infuriating Mari Okada clone #3879435 if it doesn’t. So it’s a risky proposition, and not one you can call based on the first episode. On the execution level it seems to do it right so far, it’s well directed, sticks to its slow, sensitive tone and looks pleasant and detailed – the only distracting thing are regrettable and robotic CG background characters all over the place. Overall, this is a show that demands at least three episodes, which it will get from me. Ask again later.
Twin Angel BREAK
Tumblr media
Finally, if you’re looking for some basic-ass mahou shoujo shit, here’s the new Twin Angel spinoff. It’s indeed some basic-ass mahou shoujo shit (two-girl team aka PreCure version). The genki red one and the reserved blue one go around fighting evil by the moonlight or whatever, while being cheered on by their one-gimmick-each friends. I somehow doubt this thing is setting itself up for a subversion of any kind, so yeah. What you see is what you get. The only memorable thing is that the action is more than merely bad here, it’s comically bad. Seriously, it’s somewhere between Astro Fighter Sunred and Ninja Slayer. Too bad the rest of the show is just unambitiously competent, so watching it for production pratfalls seems like it’s not worth it either.

In defense in celebration of Teen Titans Go(spacebattles crosspost)
I just got exposed to some later and non backlash/response episodes of ttg. . My assessment its a good comedic spinoff with more dc references and exaggerated Personalities with a nice use of gags. I mean they have one episode where the queen of Britain brainwashes the Teen Titans by getting them hooked on Tea then takes a Mecha-weaponized Big Ben and Robin went to the fight with the aid of the American bald eagle and Lady Liberty. How is that not awesome?
Also I do like that they can basically do episodes that poked at the somewhat semi-serious nature of the original series or premises. Such as the fact that Raven’s magic can technically solve anything if she has time to prepare and actually wants to put in the effort. So we can get episodes like Cyborg becomes real boy; Robin get super powers; and similar. Honestly some of my worst parts were when it felt like they were trying to go for a moral and the moral seen absolutely awful
One example would be Meatball Party. You see this is one where supposedly Cyborg has to learn a lesson about not trying to insist on his way all the time. The thing is the person who was insisting on their way no matter what was Raven. Cyborg basically wanted everybody to get together and have a combination of a food eating contest and fight. It was goofy. It was silly. It perfectly made sense. More importantly, he included everyone and everyone was enthusiastic about it that includes the well remembered vegetarian Beast Boy who Cyborg made tofu balls for specific. So, in short, the one person who should have the most disagreement, Beast Boy, was on board the only one who didn’t want to play along was Raven because she was so self-serious.
The rest of her team basically are insistent at various times in order for her to join them on the fun and get she sits off in a corner looking grumpy flipping through a book. Now they do get very insistent but when she agrees to eat the meatball inexplicably not only does it have robot Parts in it but it ends up breaking her tooth and this leads to the team getting Eaten. There’s this long reconciliation of where Cyborg supposed to learn a lesson about not always forcing things through and respecting others own things. But in many ways I have to agree with what his defense was.
Raven always says no and the team always insist in forcing her to expand her Horizons.
Well I won’t defend Return of Slade which actually wasted a damn good opportunity to give us Ron Perlman as a comedic supervillain. They did bring back Terra for an episode and I think it worked absolutely well. Playing into both the shows own continuity and the interests of the Fanboys. In particular the debate “is Terra actually into Beast Boy or not” being something of the thread throughout the episode mixed with Raven being the most suspicious so everybody basically treats her as jealous. I think the Ridiculousness honestly worked here. As was Beast Boy’s obliviousness because he was utterly in love. So you got a lot of people saying swarmy snarky things about each other and taking them plain face or rejecting.
Simply put this isn’t going to be an extension of the Teen Titans show. I think the biggest problem was that a very well-loved show was killed and then had it replaced and then the network exploded with Teen Titans Go. Which was even more than kiddie than even The Darlings of the network at the time like Adventure Time or Steven Universe or excetera. But honestly I think that there’s plenty of room for zany and I think that the show’s format as well as the use of the characters are actually quite funny at times. It’s at its worst though when it’s needlessly trolling the audience with episodes like Return of Slade, Let’s Get Serious, and so on. But when it basically uses as stock plot such as “Raven solves one of the characters issues that was baked into their core concept because technically she could always do that” it both pokes fun at itself and lets us go on a route that we couldn’t explore otherwise.
Another thing that they seem to have knowingly Fallen upon like piranha is the idea of Robin effectively being the team’s only sane person. So they basically make fun of that by constantly making him a know-it-all.  He’s trying to lead them on this or that activity that Robin effectively read something on Wikipedia or becomes obsessed with one or two cool things and then tries to get the entire team to join in. He does this when he tries to get them hooked on soccer. He does this on the episode where he’s trying to defend patriotism in America.  And he does this when he tries to make them go to school. That’s right we get episodes of them trying to go to school. And even separate episodes of them trying to play teacher!
And it’s fun seeing all the voice cast being able to do this as well as sort of explain or play with their characters. I’m likely more amicable to this Arrangement since I’ve just started to get hooked on Fangbone! and Captain Underpants. I think in a way we kind of become more self-conscious and want comics and cartoons to always be serious. So having a property associated with a WB and DC Comics that intentionally is Goofy and self denigrating and celebrates all the joy and Wonder and Imagination the animation and Comics can you give is nice.
Such as Robin becoming addicted to avocados and just turning into an avocado theme super villain. Hey it’s funny for a one-off! And it’s like the TTG team use the opportunity goes crazy as they can! Such as with boys night out and girls night out so we got to do the equivalent of actually seen a villain and hero who seem like interesting characters interact with each other. Same as them kind of giving Ravens and necessary character development by actually hooking her up with actual bad girl Rose Wilson
Eta: I feel this way about other series that tend to get a little bit on stuck up nose thrown in their face. Such as Uncle Grandpa Mighty magisword and Clarence. That last one particular your I think gets underrated. For every identity politics liberal accolades that you want to give to Steven Universe clearance in my opinion earns four times over just because it’s set in a much more grounded world. Complete with queer families female role models atypical and even questionable male role models and an imaginative slightly not all their child who shows amazing promise in terms of his thinking and full of heart. All that and of course all sorts of diverse female characters.
