Understanding Inheritance in Java: Exploring Types and Examples
Tumblr media
In the world of Java programming, inheritance is a powerful concept that allows developers to create a relationship between classes, fostering code reuse and organization. In this blog, we'll delve into what inheritance is in Java, explore its types, and provide practical examples to make it all crystal clear.
What is Inheritance in Java?
Inheritance is a key pillar of Object-Oriented Programming (OOP), enabling a class to inherit properties and behaviors from another class. The class granting the inheritance is known as the superclass or parent class, and the class receiving the inheritance is the subclass or child class. This mechanism promotes the reuse of code and establishes a hierarchy among classes.
Types of Inheritance in Java:
1. Single Inheritance:
In single inheritance, a subclass inherits from only one superclass. Let's illustrate this with a simple example:
Tumblr media
Here, Dog is the subclass inheriting from the Animal superclass. The Dog class can access the eat() method from the Animal class.
2. Multiple Inheritance (Through Interfaces):
Java doesn't support multiple inheritance for classes, but it does support it through interfaces. Consider the following:
Tumblr media
Here, the Human class implements both the Walkable and Swimmable interfaces, achieving a form of multiple inheritance.
3. Multilevel Inheritance:
In multilevel inheritance, a class inherits from another class, and then another class inherits from the second class, forming a chain. Let's see an example:
Tumblr media
In this scenario, C inherits from B, and B inherits from A.
4. Hierarchical Inheritance:
In hierarchical inheritance, multiple classes inherit from a single superclass, creating a hierarchy. Consider the following:
Tumblr media
Here, both Circle and Rectangle inherit from the Shape superclass.
Benefits of Inheritance:
Code Reusability: Inheritance allows you to reuse code from existing classes, minimizing redundancy.
Method Overriding: Subclasses can provide specific implementations for methods inherited from the superclass.
Polymorphism: Objects of the subclass can be treated as objects of the superclass, enhancing flexibility.
Modularity: Inheritance aids in creating modular and easily understandable code by organizing classes into a hierarchical structure.
Conclusion
In conclusion, understanding inheritance in Java is fundamental to writing efficient and organized code. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced developer, incorporating inheritance into your Java programming skills can significantly enhance your ability to create robust and maintainable applications.

Not sure how widely recognized this is but it’s fucking wild to me that miss kui just quietly snuck in the fact that most (if not all) of the differences between races only exist because of wishes they made to the Winged Lion.
Dwarves being strong? Lion wish. Elves being good at magic? Lion wish. All lifespan differences???? Lion wish, babey!
Not that the elves superiority shtick isn’t already BS, but it’s even funnier with the context that the only difference between them and humans is that, thousands of years ago, their leaders made a greedier wish to the demon that wanted to eat them.

my favourite LOTR thought at the moment is how absolutely confused Samwise Gamgee must have been when he truly met Peregrin Took for the first time. Of course he'd seen Pippin before, but he'd never actually interacted with him because Sam is just a humble gardener, while Pippin is the heir to the richest and most influential family in the whole Shire.
Poor Sam was most probably expecting a well-mannered young hobbit with very nice clothing (and perhaps a snobbish attitude), someone like Mr Frodo, or perhaps even quiet, calm Meriadoc Brandybuck. While both have a mischievous streak, they're still well-to-do and obviously so in how they act and dress and interact with one another.
There is absolutely no way he was expecting an absolutely feral hobbit-child with far too much energy and a mouth that prattles on a-mile-a-minute about absolutely everything his mind comes across. Or Pippin's favourite hobby of singing loudly in every possible scenario, or vanishing off to climb a tree or catch a fish in a nearby brook. Bare-handed.
This concept is absolutely hilarious to me and I honestly need more Sam and Pippin interactions, especially at the start of the journey when they're walking to Buckland.

At least once every day, I think about Primo’s costume and Nihil’s costume and I almost want to laugh because just look at this shit
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The contrast is just wild.
Primo’s costume is exactly that: It’s made with that same shiny materials as a Disney Princess dress-up outfit is. Meanwhile, Nihil’s is all extravagant and I look at that and I’m like “Yeah, that is indeed a Satanic Pope of the Satanic Church, mhm.”
And I absolutely understand why this is. I completely understand that when Tobias started Ghost, there just wasn’t enough in the budget for something too insane. I mean, Primo’s mask is a generic old man’s. They just needed enough of the costume to communicate what they were about and, for as costumey (derogatory) as it was, it did just that. Well done, Tobias and Primo.
But then. Ghost’s costuming just gets more and more intense and ornate with each passing guy until you wind up with Copia, who is essentially a blue art deco disco ball.
So you kinda just. Have to look at Primo and try to reconcile some sort of in-universe explanation as to why his father and brothers are all dripped to the devils while he’s. Like that.
Personally, I like the idea that his devotion to Satan means he doesn’t care as much about his appearance because, in his mind, obsessing over detail distracts from his message about his god.
Or, better yet, as we recognize that Primo was actually batshit insane and hated people, he probably was just asked by the satanic tailors what touches he would like done to his chasuble and he just went “Idfc we’re all trash and are gonna die anyway, just make sure it has red on or or whatever 😒”

while reading the books, i remember wei wuxian’s relationship with jin ling hitting me especially hard. i was crying when the whole stabbing thing happened. but i truly adore what becomes of them and do you know why? because jin ling does something the others could never, something miraculous really––he actually unlearns the prejudice he’s been taught to hold against wei wuxian. he meets wwx, full of disdain, slowly learning about who wwx really is and it has nothing to do with wwx’s outward appearance. and when the truth is revealed, the internal warring for jin ling is plainly portrayed and even if he does give in to a hate intermingled with grief that he has internalised towards this one entity (wei wuxian was never a person in his mind, just the ‘killer’ of his parents, a phantom, before the events of the book happened), you can tell his heart has already turned, that it will keep turning and that’s what happens. you have jin ling, an orphaned child, who hated someone whom his mother loved dearly, because that man caused his parents’ death but it is such a commendable thing that wei wuxian was able to create a space in jin ling’s heart and jin ling was able to accept it. it’s the way both jin ling & jiang cheng blame the death of their parents on wwx but only the former was able to see wei wuxian clearly and actually forge a bond of love with him.
it’s the fact that if ANYONE in this story can actually rightfully hold a grudge against wei wuxian, it’s jin ling, but instead this teenager decides that wei wuxian is much too good and that having him as an uncle is lovely, after all.

Hc that Maglor is very good at telling horror stories. He's a minstrel, a performer, basically an actor. He used to scare his brothers to sleep back in Aman.
Maedhros mentions this offhandedly to Elrond and Elros, and of course they start pestering Maglor for a scary story. Maglor indulges them.
The thing is, horror stories that post-Sirion Maglor would come up with are slightly different from the ones he told in Aman. It's the kind of stories that would make Ungoliant shit herself.
And considering Maglor’s acting abilities, the way he hisses like a wraith and laughs like a maniac, the way his creepy whispers echo down the halls of their half-empty fortress… When the night comes, the twins are suddenly feeling very uncomfortable.
There are strange noises in the dark, the furniture creaking, the shadows moving…
They end up hiding under Maedhros’s bed.
Maedhros, with his warrior instincts, notices them, of course, but suddenly remembers that, many hundred years ago in a land long gone, he used to have a sense of humor.
So Maglor is woken in the middle of the night by the feeling of his brother standing right next to his bed.
Maedhros, in a very uncharacteristic frightened voice: Kano, there’s… there’s a monster under my bed.
Maglor, half-asleep: Huh?
Maedhros: Two of them, actually.
*proceeds to laugh like a madman at his own joke while Maglor just sits there blinking sleepily like a very confused owl*

Fun fact: before we understood inheritance, some academics literally thought it was some kind of vibrations picked up by the nervous system.
They literally thought evolution happened through vibes alone.
