Alone In The City (And Nobodies Coming For Me) (18.5k)
SUMMARY On a day off, Evan Buckley sleeps through his apartment building catching fire and ultimately crumbling around him. He wakes up alone and scared. There is so much he's never said to so many people he loves. A few people in particular. Basically I wrote Whump!Buck because I have no self control. (Hurt/Comfort and Angst with a Happy Ending)
Basically I wrote a fic where the loft catches fire. All Buck wants is his dad (Bobby). Also Buddie feels at the end!!! This can be read as a standalone, although eventually I plan on writing a second part!! (there is no cliffhanger)

Buck goes out to get food or restock after a particularly rigorous ""work out"" session and it just happens to be at the same time as some idiot decides to rob the place.
Buck is kneeling down because hes looking for Tommy's favorite gatorade flavor. They have all the popular flavors at eye level but if you're looking for dark red, you have to stoop down. Homophobic, and during pride month.
He hears the commotion and of course his hero complex kicks in. But he doesn't wanna spook the guy cause he knows how he looks. Massive and buff and a firefighter and everyone at this place knows him too, he lives right down the road (or maybe the drug store is one the first level of his apartment). He goes to send a quick text to Tommy, when the guy with the gun demands all their phones. Buck gets out "911" and turns on his location. He stays low to the floor but makes himself known. Gets the gun trained on himself instead of anyone else because that's just who buck is.
The robber is getting desperate and every time bucks phone pings he gets more and more jumpy.
“Whose needy ass boyfriend wont stop blowing up their phone?”
Buck raises a shaky hand. He opens his mouth to say something but before he can get it out-
The store clerk high-fives him and tells him he’s proud of him. “It was only a matter of time, man. He went through all the women of LA and he just moved on to the men.”
A chorus of “Oooh come on!” “That’s biphobic” “ew gross” “not cool” ring out among the other hostages. Buck’s cheeks are burning. The mix of positive and negative reinforcement creating chaos in his head.
“You really should consider letting us go.” He says to the man with the gun. Buck takes a risk and stands to his full height and the other man’s eyes widen. “My boyfriend is bigger than I am. He's waiting for me and we weren’t done.” He holds up a box of condoms and the gatorade and someone hoots behind him.
It’s then that the sirens start. Someone shouts instructions through a bullhorn. Buck isn't listening, he's determined to get everyone out before himself. He calmly explains that out there is one of the most fiercely protective police sergeants he's ever met.
"And her first priority is not going to be you." Buck motions his raised hand to the other people in the store and says, "let them go and I can help you."
The voice amplified by the horn sounds more desperate by the second and when did the fucking fire department get here?
The armed man send everyone out, except buck, who he now holds in front of him with the barrel of the gun tucked snugly against his spine. Buck can feel it shiver against his skin.
"I didn't want to hurt anyone."
"I- I know," Buck says. The guy cowers behind him and he curses his height because if anyone was a fantastic human shield its Evan Buckley.
There's a new voice coming through the bullhorn now and Buck groans. Its Tommy and he's telling Buck the whole teams here and he's going to be alright. He sounds desperate and scared and Buck just wants to wrap his arms around the man and tell him its going to be OK.
"The boyfriend?" the guy asks and Buck almost laughs. He lets out a shaky breath.
"Yeah, needy right?"
"Listen man, I made a mistake. I'm in a lot of trouble but I never wanted anything like this." Buck nods. "My baby is sick and I'm broke. I just needed some cash and some formula."
Buck groans. He's too nice for his own good.
"There's an exit in the back."
"What?"
"In the back room I've seen them take in deliveries that way." He can hear the guy shuffle and then stop.
"Should I hit you?"
"What?" Buck peaks over his shoulder, the guy is half way to the door at the back of the store and still he's completely shielded by Buck's body. Seriously he should have been a bodyguard or something.
"I mean...it'll look like you just let me go?"
"This isn't a movie? I- I'm literally being held hostage, dude."
"Right." He turns away from Buck and then stops again. Buck is holding his breath. "Thanks man. I know this is fucked up and you didn't have to help me. You're a good guy."
Then he's gone.
Buck's not sure how to react. He did it, he saved everyone and himself and oddly the whole thing feels like a dream. Unreal. He walks slowly to the door of the shop and exits with his hands still in the air. Eddie is the first to hug him, barreling right into him and smacking his back into the glass of the window. He's checking over Buck for injuries and squinting inside the store and he seems confused.
"Where'd he go?"
Buck shrugs. "Went to the back and never came out."
Athena is next, she too gives him a once over, lets him know she can take his statement tomorrow and motions to the rest of the crew. They give him one resounding bone crushing group hug. Buck's warm and smiley but he still feels not here.
Finally, Tommy ambles out from behind the police car. He's thrown on a hoodie and sweats and he's vibrating on the balls of his feet. Buck see's the same expression on his face that must be reflected on Buck's. He reaches out to Tommy and Tommy clutches at him. The hug starts off timid until Buck hears a few pops in his back and Tommy is taking a deep breath in at his temple.
The world falls back into place like they've hit the bottom of a drop of an amusement park ride. His feet feel solidly on the ground and his stomach finally drops. His knees nearly buckle. At some point Buck had known he wasn't in danger, but it didn't feel that way. It felt like he was never going to talk to his family again, he would never see Hen or Eddie or Bobby...or Tommy. There is so much he wants to say but his breath is shaky and his hands won't release Tommy's shoulders.
"Do you want to be alone?" Tommy asks. Because of course he asks. No Buck has never wanted to be alone less. He feels like if he lets go of the man in his arms he's going to float into the atmosphere and dissipate. Like he's only tethered here by Tommy's hands.
"No," Buck says. He takes a grounding breath in, his chest bumping Tommy's. "I- I want to go home."

Evan 'Buck' Buckley giving his beau Tommy an 'I Almost Died Here' tour of LA.
'I choked on a bread stick in this restaurant. My date had to give me an emergency tracheotomy'
'Almost died in the middle of this intersection with a firetruck on top of me'
'Thanks for coming to Bobby and Athena's house party with me! This is the exact corner of the yard where I started coughing up blood and collapsed'
'Almost drowned during the tsunami at the Santa Monica pier'
'Got struck by lightning over there. Literally died that time, but I got better'
and Tommy is just, like, glad he got out of the 118 when he did

Buck hadn't meant to be reckless, really he hadn't.
For the last few years he had been trying to get better— really think through his responses on rescues more than he had before. After a few too many close calls, his latest one having actually lead to his death— as temporary as it might have been— he had slowly realized that he needed to be more careful. That he had people waiting on him to come home, counting on him.
But.
He was still a firefighter.
Or, the one where after Buck is a little reckless on a call he and Eddie get into a fight, which leads to him leaving the Diaz house to give Eddie some space and he gets hit by a car.

I'll Cover You
Written for @bucktommypositivityweek | Week 2, Day 2: Scenes from a firetruck | cw for mentions of dissociation, flashbacks
I wrote two entries for today! If mildly steamy fluff is more your vibe it's here -> Stolen Moment
The winds are strong, even days after the tornado’s long gone.
Buck hadn’t seen anything like it before. Tornadoes, sure, but the kind of large-scale damage that came from an invasive cloud of bees droning en masse and descending on the city like a plague? A first. He’s nursing a sting or two himself for a few days.
It’s almost a relief to get called on scene two days later. Almost. Because while plane crashes are, at least, familiar, they’re still grueling.
All things considered, it’s not as bad as it could’ve been. The 737 went down on land this time, but it had only barely made it off the ground before taking a nosedive back onto the tarmac. The passengers were buckled in and the drop itself wasn’t too big. So yeah, they got pretty lucky.
They’re still on the scene now. Hen and Eddie are working at the cockpit last he knew, Chim’s somewhere in the med bay here with him, working on a bigger trauma. Buck’s been handling some of the lower grade injuries and he’s cool, really. Yeah it would be nice to be out there, doing the big boy stuff, but they’ve got a new captain and he’s learning to pick his battles.
He’s just finishing wrapping up a kid’s ankle. He can’t be more than 7 but he’s been so brave, holding his little sister’s hand to keep her from crying. He’s got the elastic bandage just in place when the wind rips the kid’s jacket from where it was draped on his shoulders and under the 217’s truck.
“I gotcha!” he reassures the kid quick. “One sec, you stay right here for me, okay?”
Buck shuffles over to the truck in a walk-run and bends down low to peek underneath. It would probably be easier to grab the jacket from the other side, but he’s already here so he just finishes ducking down, crawls under and reaches out for the corner of the fabric.
He’s still under the truck when the next big wind hits. It leaves the truck shaking and groaning around him. Buck freezes. It feels like all logical thought in his brain shuts off.
The truck isn’t going to tip over. He’s not stuck. If he had the presence of mind he could wiggle his toes, even. But there’s something about being under here, hearing the voices around him, it has him tense all over. He can’t move.
When he looks back on it, he’ll wonder why it set him off. It’s not nighttime, there are no kids with bombs strapped to them, it’s not like he was even under the truck when it tipped last time. It’s a fluke, almost. But it can’t be helped. He’s petrified.
Tommy honestly thought his first call working with the 118’s A-shift would have had a little more novelty, but it’s just been long. He’s happy to see Evan, of course, but he hardly sees him. He’s been over in the med bay for the last couple of hours that Tommy’s been teamed up with Viera, pulling passengers out of the wreck.
He had at least been able to drop off an older woman directly to Evan about an hour ago.
Well, Patricia, it looks like your day is looking up! You’re in good hands with this one. He’ll patch you up real good.
Ahh, my job’s the easy part. You’re just lucky firefighter pilot Kinard was here to save you.
She’d only had a sprained wrist, but Tommy had watched them from afar for a minute, ever impressed with the way Evan kept her calm, reassurances and jokes taking the fear out of her eyes. He has to turn back before long, but he lets that moment carry him through the next push. He’s going home to that man.
He’s jogging back to check in at base when he hears crying to his right. There’s a kid standing still, holding the hand of a little girl and he’s wailing at the sky. That doesn’t seem right. Tommy’s eyes track around the area and he spots boots sticking out of the side of their truck. Definitely not right. He changes course, picking up his speed as he approaches the kids.
“Hey, bud, you okay?” He’s got his hands on the boy’s shoulders, grounding him, hopefully. “You hurting anywhere?”
The kid coughs out a few more sobs in Tommy’s face, but he shakes his head. He looks like he’s willing himself not to be scared. Jesus, kids are resilient.
“Alright, that’s good, I’m going to check on my friend here, you gonna be okay for a minute?” A nod. Good.
Tommy turns his attention to the truck behind him, lays flat, knocking his helmet off in the process. The guy’s not moving, but Tommy’s not able to figure out at a glance what happened here. There’s no gas leak, no threat to public safety over here.
“You good, man?” he calls out.
The body of the guy twitches. Not dead. That’s good. He clears his throat.
“Can you feel your feet? I can try to move you but I need to know if you’ve got any injuries I should watch out for.”
No response. Okay. Time to change tack.
Tommy rights himself and walks to the other side of the truck, resuming position on the asphalt. He shuffles in a little closer and finally gets a look at the guy’s face.
Evan. It’s Evan.
“Evan?” he says. He’s not sure it comes out as much more than a breath.
Evan’s eyes do flick to his then, but there’s still something distant in his gaze. He’s dissociated. It comes to mind then, the stories told at happy hours and trivia nights, and the ones told only in the sanctuary that is their bedroom. They're good stories, but Tommy knows better than most the toll that kind of shit can take on a person. Evan's having a flashback.
“Alright, alright, baby,” Tommy says under his breath. He’s not sure Evan would hear him even if he spoke up. He looks pretty gone.
Tommy scoots half a foot closer, puts both palms flat to the ground.
“Evan,” he starts, “can you do this with your hands? Just like mine.” He flexes his hands a bit to demonstrate.
Evan’s own hands are balled up. It looks like he army crawled under here. His arms are bent at his sides, curled in tight half under his body. He blinks a few times.
“Your hands, Evan.” Tommy picks his own up and places them back down again. “Just like this.”
Evan mirrors the movements.
“Good job, that’s perfect.”
“Kinard?” He hears from behind him.
“We’re good here, Sloane.” Who knows if she’ll believe him; she’s a damn good secondary when they’re in the air but she’s nosy as all get-out.
He hears the sound of her turnouts rustling as she shifts around, deciding whether to stay or go.
“Sloane. I got this. Can you round back to the kids on the other side? I’m going to be here a minute.”
He hears the sound of boots squeaking behind him as she does what he asks. Okay, Ev, just you and me.
Evan’s fingertips are curling, his eyes pinched closed.
“Ev, sweetheart, look at me.” He does. “I’m gonna grab your arm okay? Then we can work on getting you over here. Sound good?”
There’s no response, but that’s okay. Tommy’s going real slow. He reaches out and places a sure hand on Evan’s arm.
“Can you push yourself toward me?”
His eyes close again and for a second Tommy falters, mentally jumping two steps back to figure out a different path forward. But then Evan pushes. He digs the meat of his hand into the ground and uses the leverage to slide his body toward Tommy.
“Just like that. Exactly like that.”
He’s close enough now that Tommy can reach his shoulder. He gets a good grip and rolls Evan the rest of the way, pulling him up to sitting once he’s on his back and out from under the belly of the truck. He watches as Evan scrambles to pull his feet out.
Tommy’s got him sat in between the V of his legs, one arm around his waist, and brings the other up to Evan’s face, pushing the damp hair off his forehead. They’re tucked in between trucks, so the sound of commotion from the continued efforts of the other houses is muffled. The loudest thing he can hear is their panting, both going a little boneless with relief.
Tommy places a kiss to Evan’s temple. He’s sweaty there too. He feels Evan’s breathing slow down a bit, but he’s reluctant to break the quiet. He’s not sure that Evan’s flashbacks are like his, everyone’s a little different, but he sometimes needs the silence after. Just to collect himself. So he gives that to Evan, too.
“Did- did you get it?” Evan finally says, startling Tommy just a bit.
“Get it?”
“The jacket.” He’s smoothing his palms over his pants; nervous habit.
Tommy stretches his neck to look behind him, sees the blue rain jacket lying there. He can pinch it with his fingers from where they’re sitting. He drags it out. Troublemaker.
They sit together for another minute. Tommy can hear Sloane marching the kids away to find their parents. If he really tunes into the noises around them, he can hear some laughter and lots of walkies; they're finishing up here. He'll probably get called in soon enough to pack up.
“How are you feeling?” he asks.
Evan nods, then tips his head back onto Tommy’s shoulder. “Better. Thank you.”
Tommy moves his hand down to Evan’s face, just to tilt his cheek a little closer, plants a long, sure kiss there.
“I’ve got you.”
Evan smiles. “Yeah, you got me.”

I know I mostly deal in fluff but hear me out.
Imagine Tommy going down in a helicopter crash, similar in nature to the one Owen and Hen have in the crossover episode. Right down into an active forest fire, no gps, no radio, no backup. Just him and the flames and a few broken bones.
Now imagine Buck, at home, knowing Tommy is on scene at the fire upstate and keeping the news on while he does chores, cooking dinner, maybe even babysitting Jee-Yun so Maddie and Chimney can have a date night.
He has his mac and cheese half way out of the oven when the news anchor of the hour reports on the presumed death of one firefighter who went down in a helicopter just moments earlier. Ear ringing, heart racing, mind spinning as he sees the footage of the helicopter Tommy sent him a selfie in front of earlier plummeting into a flame filled valley hours away.
Before he can even stop to turn off the oven, Bobby is calling him and Hen is texting the station group chat, but all Buck can think about is his Tommy, his boyfriend dying alone in the middle of the helicopter they met inside.
And Tommy? He’s limping towards high ground, up the side of the valley away from the fire line, praying to the smoke filled sky that the casual peck he gave Evan before leaving the loft that morning wouldn’t be the last, even as the fire rages around him and his adrenaline begins to dwindle.
(Buck promptly asks Lucy a favor in getting him, Bobby, Hen, and Chim up to the fire as quick as possible and Tommy finds himself in between two boulders that shield him from the flames as the wind shifts away from him, leaving him stranded but thankfully alive for a full day before he hears the sound of some ATVs and familiar voices nearby.)

Buckies + [INJURY] 👹
[INJURY]: after having been badly wounded themselves, the sender tries to reassure the frantic receiver by cupping their face and comforting them.
Buck had never been good at being hungry. It made his head swim, his thoughts dumb and slow quicker than it seemed to others. Perhaps it was early exposure, perhaps he was just a little less strong than the rest of the guys in some small fundamental way. But the longer hunger gnawed away at him the more he found himself lost and dazed, lightheaded to the point of stupidity.
Mostly he's able to hide it by hovering around Bucky, taking his lead and following his orbit because that was something subconscious at this point. Could hover at his shoulder with arms crossed, face set in contemplation at whatever someone is saying and let John do the talking while he tries to force his sluggish brain to comprehend.
It's when he's alone that it becomes something dangerous perhaps. Moments like now where he's pacing along the fenceline as he tended to do on the days when the cabin walls felt a little too close. There's voices shouting in harsh German, but then there's always voices shouting here. By the time it registers he's the one being addressed he's already being grabbed, keeled over with the butt of a rifle to the gut. Too close to the fence, or so he assumes, his brain too fogged to parse his developing library of knowledge of German phrases.
He knows he's being called a dog.
It's the smallest ounce of madness, of captive frustration. Of the lack of fucking food in his belly turning his temper to something silk thin and volatile.
He spits right on the guards' stupid mud-covered boot.
In a second he's pinned against the fence, the metal screeching and bowing under the weight of two bodies. A fist on his face, in his gut. When he falls that spit-covered boot tenderizes his ribs and stomps on his thigh, his hips.
He takes it quietly as possible, arms raised to protect his stupid head, blood filling his mouth and nose like vomit. Perhaps there's some of that too, the steel-covered toes meeting his gut with such force it folds him in half and spews unnamed liquid from his lips.
By the time the guards allow his fellow airmen to peel him from the mud like a linen blown from the clothes rack he's hurting like he's never hurt before. Ribs crackling with every inhale, feet that can't quite seem to obey. Head aching worse than ever. It's Benny and Jack who drag him into the cabin, dump him into John's bunk because there's no way to get him in there gently. He settles back with a barely bitten-back whimper, has all of two seconds to take a breath before John himself is there, dark features pinched in worry and anger.
"My God, Gale." he hisses, breath wobbling out of him. he takes in the violence wrought on the blondes body, eyes skipping around as if he doesn't know where to look first past the mud and blood and refuse that clung to them all.
"My god," he repeats, unbuttoning Gale's jacket and tugging up his sweater to prod at his chest, his abdomen as if to make sure none of his organs had burst like a balloon. He certainly felt like a few had.
"Gale," John repeats, stunned out of nicknames and bravado.
Gale realizes he needs to speak, needs to answer to reassure John and the boys he's fine, nothing he can't walk off.
He needs something to eat. He needs the taste of blood out of his mouth.
He reaches up with a clumsy hand and cups John's face, drags his thumb across the starpoint of his cheekbone. leaves behind a filthy smear of blood and dirt.
"Shh," he soothes his man as one would a spooked horse, as one would a loyal dog. "Shh, it's okay."
John turns his head and presses a kiss to the center of Gale's palm, comes back with lips stained wine-red.

I've Fought Tougher Men (But I Really Can't Remember When) 3k
Eddie left Bobby to babysit his patient and stood beside Hen, handing her a fresh piece of gauze as a pretense. “There a problem here?” he asked, keeping his expression as neutral as possible. Hen smiled and accepted the gauze, trading it out for the bloodied one she had pressed against the guy’s cheek. “Nothing major.” “Damn right it's major,” Dick hissed. He batted Hen's hand away. “Hey.” Eddie snipped. “Keep your hands to yourself.” “You got no right to tell me what to do, boy,” Dick huffed, shaking a finger at him. “I have my reasons.” “Being a repressed boomer isn't a good reason to assault the people who are trying to help you, let alone jam broken glass into your friend's head,” Eddie scolded. He had a split second to wonder just how ruthless the scolding from Bobby would be before Dick punched him right in the eye.

She's here!!!!! Don't ask me why 3k words took so freaking long 🙄. I'd just get a rhythm going, and then another fic idea would pop into my head. This has been in my drafts since December. But I'm happy to finally have it done and out of my hair!
And look at the stunning cover @ronordmann made me!!!!! 🥰🥰🥰
(Also, please be advised, there is some homophobia in this fic, specifically from the character Dick. It's not for very long, but please be careful 🥰)

I've been telling friends about one of my favorite shows, Magnificent Seven, from late 90's, which was also probably my first foray into fandom. I don't even know why I or even how I found fanfic back in 1998 - but I did, and I have loved them ever since. But it's not just the show that I love, it is the fandom. Maybe because it was almost all older women, or maybe people were just nicer back then - there were no ship wars. None. Not even a thing. 99% of the fandom is genfic A++++ Found Family, but the ones who did ship characters together Shipped and Let Ship. Nobody bothered anybody. And there were like 7 or 8 widespread AU's that everyone agreed on - there was the OG Old West where the show was set, but then there was the WILDLY popular (to the point I thought THAT was the actual premise for the show, and 10 year old me was very shocked to find it was a western) ATF AU where the characters were federal agents. There was Lil Britches, which had several of the characters are children and the rest are adults, there's Star Trek and Star Wars, and them as private detectives, WWII soldiers, etc. The lists are endless. And none of them are bad.
And almost every single one of them is whumpy as fuck.
So I'm going to recommend my favorites:
The South Wind Series by Beth aka Midge
Replaced by Heather F
Pied Piper by Kelly A
Rough Beginnings by Shawna
The Devil's Bargain by Sue Necessary
Aftermath by BMP
Black and White by Violette
Abandoned by Jean
Ezra, In Between by MAC
Tuesday's Child: Lessons of Grace by Joy K
Run Like Hell by Beth aka Midge
Don't Know From Adam by Jordan Mckenzie
Bearing the Pain by Angela B (crossover with Big Valley)
All Things Considered by Nilah H
I could list pretty much every one I've ever read - I don't actually know that I read an M7 fic I didn't care for. However, almost all of these listed authors have more than one fic (some have a LOT more). So if you like them, more are easier to find. I haven't actually looked to see what's available on Ao3 or even ffn.net - because neither site existed when the fandom was in its heyday and everyone had their own web page for posting.
