Some people like to settle down with a good book. No-one in possession of a complete set of marbles would like to settle down with a book of magic, because even the individual words have a private and vindictive life of their own and reading them, in short, is a kind of mental Indian wrestling. Many a young wizard has tried to read a grimoire that is too strong for him, and people who've heard the screams have found only his pointy shoes with the classic wisp of smoke coming out of them and a book which is, perhaps, just a little fatter. Things can happen to browsers in magical libraries that make having your face pulled off by tentacled monstrosities from the Dungeon Dimensions seem a mere light massage by comparison.

Whimsify Your Wizardry

I'm a bit of a nutcase when it comes to adding whimsy, both to magical work and everyday life; VERY heavy-handed. My input on the subject, having learned these things over time:

-Spend the extra time to accessorize. Baubles, bangles, scarves, keychains, everything that pulls the look together. Every outfit that I wear outside screams 'fairytale wizard.' I might get weird looks now and again, but it's fun, and if you look magical, you feel magical.

-Turn simple acts into devotion, and behave accordingly. When I shower, I recite a thank-you to every force I can think of that culminated in a hot shower this very evening. When I cook, I look for beauty in every ingredient. When I am with my cat, I treat her like she knows what I'm saying.

-For that matter, start believing that ANY plant, animal, structure, or weather pattern understands what you are saying to it. Whether there's a spirit in there or not, you're a magus, damn it, the laws of man and nature hang on your whims.

-"Arts and Crafts--" NO. This is a deep and complex arcane ritual that my hands and the hands of my teachers' teachers have performed long before I was even CONCEIVED. "Well, back to my job, I guess--" WRONG AGAIN. Your toil sustains those who rely on it. You deserve to be recognized.

-Assume that magic exists for others, too. There is nothing more destructive to whimsy than self-absorption. The crows might be gathered as an omen, but is the omen for you? Be discerning. It follows that you should respect spaces in which magic is indeed happening.

-If you keep a magical journal, grimoire, etc, you should know that you're allowed to put anything you want in there. Mine is encrypted because it looks, and therefore feels, and therefore is, more magical. -Note things that bring you wonder. Act to make them happen regularly. Be safe of course, but seek out things that make you feel joy. Also accept that you are worthy of that which is offered you in good faith.

-Explore, both physically and mentally. Try out new music. Save the links to cool online literature or websites. Follow the sound of water. Go down the steps where the sign is backwards. I once stumbled into a fair-folk space by following a trail of holly branches. They were not there on the way back. Take your tea, leave your cup! Have a delicious day, little madmen! -Matron
